FINE ARTS 2019-2020
from the desk of
DR. JOAN GRIFFING Fine Arts Division Chair
Welcome to the 2019-2020 season of Fine Arts at Friends University! As you peruse the brochure, I hope you will mark your calendars with some of the enticing events that pique your interest, from the traditional to the new. We look forward to having you join us as we celebrate the arts at Friends! Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “There is nothing permanent except change”and change is upon us here at Friends. We are happy to be welcoming four new full time music faculty members in choral, band/ music education, orchestra and jazz, as well as several new part time fine arts faculty in the Division. Each person is bringing a high level of artistic expertise, passion for education, and professional experience that will benefit our students in a host of ways. We are also happily welcoming a new large class of talented fine arts students to our Division. Our family of fine arts faculty members, students and staff continues to grow, create and collaborate together on a daily basis. These are exciting times at Friends! I am very pleased to announce that this fall we are beginning a new Music Theatre degree program as well as reinstating the Theatre major. Both these degrees are integral to a well-rounded fine arts division where all art forms are interconnected and supportive of one another. They will provide growth in student enrollment, enhanced learning opportunities, increased exposure to a wider roster of guest artists, as well as more performances for our audiences to enjoy. We look forward to your support of these new endeavors and encourage your feedback! One new event you don’t want to miss is the Residency with Quaker composer Gwyneth Walker in late March-early April. The interdisciplinary nature of her work means that many artists will be joining forces: the Friends Concert Choir, University Orchestra, Wichita Community Children’s Choir, photographer Mickey Shannon, guest artists Musica Harmonia, members of the Native American community, Friends ballet students, and other students and faculty. Author, educator and motivational speaker William Arthur Ward wrote,

The adventure of life is to learn. The purpose of life is to grow. The nature of life is to change. The challenge of life is to overcome. The essence of life is to care. The opportunity of life is to serve. The secret of life is to dare. The spice of life is to befriend. The beauty of life is to give.
His words express the essence of what the fine arts impart to our students at Friends. We look forward to sharing these lessons with you, our audience. Enjoy, discover and delight in the fine arts this season!

The Fine Arts Division
exists for the creation and study of the arts. We provide students educational and creative experiences that integrate professional artistic standards with the academic inquiry of the liberal arts, Christian tradition and our Quaker heritage. Students and faculty develop their craft and vocation while engaging audiences and serving the community. Dedicated faculty guide instruction in a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum, mentoring students to experience the transforming power of the arts and to excel in their profession. The Division of Fine Arts fosters a long tradition of excellence. We have had performing arts on our campus since 1900 and visual arts since 1917. This heritage informs our 21st century model of providing outstanding educational and creative experiences through dedicated faculty/mentors, more than 20 guest musicians, choreographers and artists, and 150 concerts, performances, exhibits and events annually. A commitment to creating out-of-the-classroom learning experiences and inviting guest artists to campus exposes our students and faculty to relevant, artistic creativity and innovation. It also serves as a valuable source of inspiration and a model for successful careers in the arts.
