FINE ARTS 2022 - 2023

Greetings from

DR. NATHANAEL MAY

DIVISION CHAIR OF THE FINE ARTS I feel incredibly blessed to arrive at Friends University at this time in the school’s history. It is evident that the arts are poised for a renaissance as we emerge from the pandemic. This represents a unique opportunity for our programs to thrive as we seek to engage with new audiences and serve an ever-widening demographic of students and community. Friends University has served the Wichita area as a point of gathering for rehearsals, productions and creative work. In fact, we frequently sponsor regional events that bring artists, dancers, and musicians to our campus from all of Kansas and beyond! Our Next Act Rise Up Campaign will provide much needed additions and modernization to the Riney Fine Arts Center. This transformation is essential to the future success of our students and programs and will position Friends as a premiere center for the arts. I invite you to consider ways in which you can help us achieve this goal. We have an exciting season ahead; in addition to traditional favorites Christmas Candlelight and Symphony of Spring, every event is sure to introduce new sights and sounds. Guest clinicians include Dr. William Weinert, professor of conducting and director of choral activities at the Eastman School of Music and the Adam Larson Jazz Trio, a major player on the New York jazz scene. Also on tap are Gilbert & Sullivan’s final opera The Gondoliers and the hit musical Catch Me If You Can. Be sure to also catch our First Friday gallery openings, featuring renowned artists displaying paintings, prints and sculptures. I am so excited to join this vibrant community and cannot wait to learn more about each and every one of you. I hope you will join us as we create the next chapter of artistic excellence at Friends!

Q& A

What is your background? Dr. May: My formal training as a pianist led to performing the music of living composers in my first position at Eastern Mediterranean University on the island of Cyprus. Along the way, this passion developed into an international festival dedicated to bringing young composers and performers together in celebration of new music, the soundSCAPE Composition and Performance Exchange. Most recently, I have served as Chair of the School of Fine Arts at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, MO.

What most excites you about working at Friends? Dr. May: Hands down, the culture, tradition, and people at Friends! The opportunity to align faith-based values with a community of inspiring and committed educators is a dream come true. I am eager to work with our students, faculty, alumni, and the Friends community in furthering our tradition of excellence throughout the region and beyond.

Why are the arts important? Dr. May: In times of discord and disruption, the arts play an integral role in helping people bridge divides and build trust within communities. We need this now more than ever. The arts prepare students to be leaders who actively listen, collaborate and bring people together through shared creative experiences.

T he comprehensive vocal program, comprised of students across disciplines, includes performing groups such as the Singing Quakers, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Women’s Choir, Falcon Chorus, Jazz Vocal Ensemble and more. Choirs are frequently invited to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association annual convention. They also often get to study and perform under the baton of internationally-renowned composers and conductors such as Dr. Gweneth Walker and Dr. André J. Thomas. T heatre and Dance productions offer a variety of opportunities to perform, collaborate and create with students across campus. Theatre at Friends University means “togetherness”: working intimately with others toward creative ends. Theatre at Friends also means “independence”: setting goals and becoming motivated. Theatre at Friends means “good play joins hard work” in a fun and creative atmosphere. The dance minor at Friends gives students an edge in pursuing post graduation work. It’s a nurturing and supportive environment that includes professional training and diverse dance style classes. Guest dancers and chorographers across the nation come to hold workshops and choreograph numbers. This specialty in dance is why our Music Theatre degree is one of only a few in the region with a triple threat - excellence in the areas of singing, acting and dancing. A variety of annual productions provide ample opportunity for majors and non majors to perform in dramas, musicals, comedies, operas and more.

A major in the visual arts at Friends University allows students the opportunity to study studio art

(drawing, painting, print-making, sculpture, ceramics or photography) graphic arts, art education, and communications (media/visual). Skilled faculty teach creativity and design as a foundation of the curriculum with an expectation that all students will create a professional portfolio as a result of their study and work. Students experience hands-on work in the studio or computer lab along with opportunities for out-of-theclassroom learning. An established and well-known rotating gallery provides opportunities for students and the public to experience high-quality work. Opportunities to meet the artist and purchase artwork is featured in the First Friday experience. As the name implies, First Friday happens the first Friday of each month and provides a unique opportunity for art-lovers to engage with local art each month at locations throughout the city. This grassroots event continues to thrive because of the collective vision and collaboration of galleries such as the Riney Fine Arts Gallery.

OUR NEXT ACT R I S E U P C A M PA I G N P H A S E T W O

The Riney Fine Arts Center has had a home on the Friends University campus since the 1960s. While it has hosted high-quality music, dance and theatrical performances for decades, it was built without the future in mind. In order to create space for collaboration, encourage the discovery of new techniques and artistic expressions, and debut inspiring performances, we need a fine arts space that pushes our artists into the modern age while still holding onto the valuable traditions of our past. We have an opportunity to foster such an environment with renovations and additions to the Riney Fine Arts Center for both our campus and our community. This isn’t just about maintaining an inspiring building, this is about inspiring the next generation of artists, teachers, conductors, choir directors and worship leaders who are ready to make a hopeful and vibrant mark on the world. We need your help to make this vision a reality. Learn more at friends.edu/riseup
