Academic

REGALIA Hoods The academic hood identifies the level of the degree, the discipline in which the degree is awarded and the institution which awarded it. The bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral hoods are commonly three feet, three-and-a-half feet and four feet, respectively. The colors of the hood lining identify the school awarding the graduate or honorary degrees. Scarlet and gray lining reflects Friends University. The colors of the velvet border of the hood identify the discipline: Maize – Agriculture White – Arts, Letters and Humanities Drab – Commerce and Business Copper – Economics Light Blue – Education Brown – Fine Arts Peacock – Health Care Leadership Crimson – Journalism Lilac – Juris Doctorate

Lemon – Library Science Pink – Music Apricot – Nursing Dark Blue – Philosophy Sage Green – Physical Education Golden Yellow – Science Citron – Social Work/Social Science Silver Gray – Speech Scarlet – Theology

Gowns Black gowns are the rule, but a few universities use other colors. Doctoral gowns are most readily recognizable by three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve, either black or in the color of the university in which the degree was granted; some also have velvet panels down the front. In an effort to sustain the environment, Friends University graduates are wearing environmentally-friendly gowns that will decompose in soil in one year. Caps and Tassels The familiar hard-topped mortarboard, or Oxford cap, has long been a standard, but a few universities use a soft tam. The tassels for faculty members are either black or in the color of the university who awarded the degree; or gold in the case of some doctoral degrees. The color of the tassel on the caps of the graduating class indicates Friends University’s colors, scarlet and gray. Honor Cords Honor cords, draped from the graduate’s neck, are worn by members of the University’s honor societies. Please see descriptions on the following pages.

Dr. Dona Gibson

KEYNOTE SPEAKER Dr. Dona Gibson is a Professor Emeritus at Friends University, recently retiring from Friends University in December 2021 after 40 years of service. Dr. Gibson was a member of the Division of Education, serving as Program Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching program, now Master of Education, since 1991. She served as Division Chair of the Graduate School division of Arts, Science and Education from 2007-2015. She also served as Interim Dean of the Graduate School, 2012-13. Her university service has embraced many special task forces, assisting with HLC initiatives and committee service, including the creation of the International Travel and Study Abroad committee as a support to faculty wanting to create international travel experiences for students. Dr. Gibson is active in the Association of Teacher Educators at the state and national level, having presented annually at the national conference. She is also a member of the World Federation of Associations of Teacher Education and has presented at conferences in Nairobi, Kenya and Beijing, China. In addition to her teaching life, one of her greatest joys has been creating opportunity for international travel for more than 500 students over a span of 25 years. Beginning with an exchange program with two British universities in 1992 and continuing with London-based experiences through 2018, she has taught many to become Citizens of the World. She has told the story many times that when she was 8 years old and attending Symphony of Spring in Alumni Auditorium, she told her mother, “I want to live here.” And so she has, first as an undergraduate elementary candidate, then returning to teach for her Alma Mater for 40, in her words, “wonderful years.”
