Table of CONTENTS

To the Class of 2023:

On behalf of the entire Friends University community, I extend heartfelt congratulations to you, to your family and to those who helped you along the way toward your graduation. Your degree represents a significant achievement, and I applaud you on the attainment of this important goal.

Today is a time to celebrate, to reflect upon your past accomplishments, and to look ahead with confidence and resolve toward the next phase of your life’s journey. At Friends you were part of an awesome community that honors scholars and scholarship, a community that honors service to others, and, importantly, a community that honors God. Take these attributes out into the world and make a difference. Approach new situations and people with good will and humility. Accept and cherish your responsibility to care for others in your learning and working relationships. Become an even better steward of what you have been given. Strive for excellence and innovation by being ethical and creative problem solvers.

Friends is a Christian community of love and light –embracing the Quaker value that the image of God is in everyone. In the days and months and years to come, we trust that you will keep alive your love for Friends University and all that it represents. You will always be a part of the Friends University family.

Congratulations!

Hoods

The academic hood identifies the level of the degree, the discipline in which the degree is awarded and the institution which awarded it. The bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral hoods are commonly three feet, three-and-a-half feet and four feet, respectively.

The colors of the hood lining identify the school awarding the graduate or honorary degrees. Scarlet and gray lining reflects Friends University. The colors of the velvet border of the hood identify the discipline:

Maize – Agriculture

White – Arts, Letters and Humanities

Drab – Commerce and Business

Copper – Economics

Light Blue – Education

Brown – Fine Arts

Peacock – Health Care Leadership

Crimson – Journalism

Lilac – Juris Doctorate

Gowns

Lemon – Library Science

Pink – Music

Apricot – Nursing

Dark Blue – Philosophy

Sage Green – Physical Education

Golden Yellow – Science

Citron – Social Work/Social Science

Silver Gray – Speech

Scarlet – Theology

Black gowns are the rule, but a few universities use other colors. Doctoral gowns are most readily recognizable by three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve, either black or in the color of the university in which the degree was granted; some also have velvet panels down the front.

In an effort to sustain the environment, Friends University graduates are wearing environmentally-friendly gowns that will decompose in soil in one year.

Caps and Tassels

The familiar hard-topped mortarboard, or Oxford cap, has long been a standard, but a few universities use a soft tam. The tassels for faculty members are either black or in the color of the university who awarded the degree; or gold in the case of some doctoral degrees. The color of the tassel on the caps of the graduating class indicates Friends University’s colors, scarlet and gray.

Honor Cords

Honor cords, draped from the graduate’s neck, are worn by members of the University’s honor societies. Please see descriptions on the following pages.

Honors Program

The Friends University Honors Program is a community of highly motivated and academically adventurous students dedicated to attaining high levels of integration and achievement within their fields of study. Admission to the program begins during the student’s first year at the University and requires entering students to have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher and an ACT score of 25 or higher. Thereafter, students must maintain that grade level while completing six credit hours of Honors Seminar, an interdisciplinary, discussion-based course in which numerous interconnected topics are closely examined, as well as completing an Honors Senior Project, a demanding work of research that is, at its conclusion, presented to the University community. The students who complete this full program are recognized as Honors Graduates with Distinction. Members are recognized by their purple and gold cords.
