On behalf of the entire Friends University community, I extend heartfelt congratulations to you, to your family and to those who helped you along the way toward your graduation. Your degree represents a significant achievement, and I applaud you on the attainment of this important goal.
Today is a time to celebrate, to reflect upon your past accomplishments, and to look ahead with confidence and resolve toward the next phase of your life’s journey. At Friends you were part of an awesome community that honors scholars and scholarship, a community that honors service to others, and, importantly, a community that honors God. Take these attributes out into the world and make a difference. Approach new situations and people with good will and humility. Accept and cherish your responsibility to care for others in your learning and working relationships. Become an even better steward of what you have been given. Strive for excellence and innovation by being ethical and creative problem solvers.
Friends is a Christian community of love and light –embracing the Quaker value that the image of God is in everyone. In the days and months and years to come, we trust that you will keep alive your love for Friends University and all that it represents. You will always be a part of the Friends University family.

The academic hood identifies the level of the degree, the discipline in which the degree is awarded and the institution which awarded it. The bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral hoods are commonly three feet, three-and-a-half feet and four feet, respectively.
The colors of the hood lining identify the school awarding the graduate or honorary degrees. Scarlet and gray lining reflects Friends University. The colors of the velvet border of the hood identify the discipline:
Maize – Agriculture
White – Arts, Letters and Humanities
Drab – Commerce and Business
Copper – Economics
Light Blue – Education
Brown – Fine Arts
Peacock – Health Care Leadership
Crimson – Journalism
Lilac – Juris Doctorate
Lemon – Library Science
Pink – Music
Apricot – Nursing
Dark Blue – Philosophy
Sage Green – Physical Education
Golden Yellow – Science
Citron – Social Work/Social Science
Silver Gray – Speech
Scarlet – Theology
Black gowns are the rule, but a few universities use other colors. Doctoral gowns are most readily recognizable by three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve, either black or in the color of the university in which the degree was granted; some also have velvet panels down the front.
In an effort to sustain the environment, Friends University graduates are wearing environmentally-friendly gowns that will decompose in soil in one year.
Caps and Tassels
The familiar hard-topped mortarboard, or Oxford cap, has long been a standard, but a few universities use a soft tam. The tassels for faculty members are either black or in the color of the university who awarded the degree; or gold in the case of some doctoral degrees. The color of the tassel on the caps of the graduating class indicates Friends University’s colors, scarlet and gray.
Honor Cords
Honor cords, draped from the graduate’s neck, are worn by members of the University’s honor societies. Please see descriptions on the following pages.
Dr. James Bryan Smith has authored 12 books, most notably The Apprentice Series, which includes The Good and Beautiful God, The Good and Beautiful You, The Good and Beautiful Life, and The Good and Beautiful Community. Dr. Smith received his B.A. in Religion and Philosophy at Friends University, his M.Div. at Yale Divinity School, and his D.Min. at Fuller Theological Seminary.
Smith has taught at Friends University for over 30 years and the founder and Executive Director of the Apprentice Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation, as well as a founding member of Richard J. Foster’s spiritual renewal ministry, Renovaré. Dr. Smith is an ordained United Methodist Church minister and has served in various capacities in local churches in addition to hosting the Things Above Podcast.
In the fall of 2016, Dr. Smith was part of the Friends University team that developed a master’s degree program in Christian spiritual formation and leadership. In 2018, university donors built upon Friends’ legacy of theological leadership by establishing the fully-endowed Dallas Willard Chair in Spiritual Formation and naming Dr. Smith as the first to hold the position. In addition to authoring the “The Good and Beautiful” and “The Magnificent” book series, Dr. Smith is also the editor of A Spiritual Formation Workbook and Devotional Classics (with Richard Foster), and the author of Embracing the Love of God, Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven and Room of Marvels.
The honorary title of emeritus may be awarded by the Board of Trustees to retiring faculty in recognition of outstanding service to Friends University and its students. Faculty must have served at least 10 years in a full-time capacity.
Dr. Nora D. Strasser was named earlier this academic year as an Emeritus faculty member. Dr. Strasser holds the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and the Master of Arts in Mathematics from the University of South Dakota, as well as the Doctorate of Education in Higher Education Administration from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Strasser has served Friends University for 37 years as a full-time faculty member; 28 of those years included service as the chair of the Division of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Under her leadership, new programs in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security, and Conservation Science have been added to the STEM division.
Dr. Strasser was also instrumental in helping some of the STEM programs receive national accreditation. Dr. Strasser is an exemplary instructor who has displayed a strong commitment to implementing new technology to aid student learning, whether that be the use of a 3D printer for projects in her calculus classes, online homework platforms with immediate grading feedback and numerous tutorial resources for her math students or video links, in-class activities and innovative lecture methods to improve teaching. Please join me in thanking Dr. Strasser for her 37 years of exemplary service to Friends University.
W.A. Young Award for Teaching Excellence
Friends University students, faculty and staff nominate full-time faculty members for the W. A. Young Award for Excellence in Teaching. The annual award was established in 1963 in honor of Walter A. Young who served as a Friends University history professor (1925-35), academic dean (1935-39) and president (1939-46).
The award recipient is selected for demonstrating scholarship and continuing professional growth; superior classroom presentations, motivation of student interest and capacity to inspire student scholarship; skillful course planning, providing sufficient direction with desired flexibility to enable genuine learning; and spiritual qualities of authentic Christianity paralleling the goals of Friends University for his/her students. A committee of past award recipients selects the honoree each year.
LaFever
Students, faculty and staff nominate members of adjunct faculty for the Jan LaFever Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award. The award was established in 1999 in memory of Jan LaFever, a long-time member of the English department adjunct faculty. The award recipient is selected for demonstrating extraordinary service to the University’s mission and students and must have taught as a member of adjunct faculty for at least one year.

The Friends University Honors Program is a community of highly motivated and academically adventurous students dedicated to attaining high levels of integration and achievement within their fields of study. Admission to the program begins during the student’s first year at the University and requires entering students to have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher and an ACT score of 25 or higher. Thereafter, students must maintain that grade level while completing six credit hours of Honors Seminar, an interdisciplinary, discussion-based course in which numerous interconnected topics are closely examined, as well as completing an Honors Senior Project, a demanding work of research that is, at its conclusion, presented to the University community. The students who complete this full program are recognized as Honors Graduates with Distinction. Members are recognized by their purple and gold cords.
