WELCOME friends university
WHERE we started
In 1898 James M. Davis, a wealthy businessman and native Kansan, purchased the former Garfield University and offered the building to the Kansas Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends (also known as the Quakers), fulfilling his dream of “Christian education of the youth of the Great Southwest.”
With approximately 3,000 students today, Friends University’s founding principles are still deeply embedded in the University’s culture, even though the institution is no longer governed by the Society of Friends. The University’s focus is on developing people of integrity and spiritual depth to lead lives of “honest deeds” as the Friends University alma mater notes. Friends University students learn the importance of developing a sound mind and body, strong moral character, a good sense of humor, and a strong will to nobly serve their communities. They represent the kind of citizens and leaders who are needed today – individuals who can think critically to solve problems, offer solutions and serve as exemplary models for others and their communities.
“
WELCOME
WHO we are today
to friends university
He envisioned a university that would hold up the Quaker ideals of equality, changing others and the world for the better, and the education of men and women guided by the principles of justice, mercy, peace, compassion and love. With 53 students enrolled in September 1898, Mr. Davis’ vision for Friends University’s future was uncompromised, stable and compelling.
The purpose of this school shall be to give to the world and to give our country a class of citizens that will be in every sense loyal citizens. ... Loyalty means that mental training and discipline which makes the child think, the development which makes him strong in mind and body, strong in his moral nature, a full man in that intelligence which should direct the efforts of all men for conscientious, honorable and successful private life and citizenship.

DID you know?
When it was built in the late 1800s, the Davis Administration Building (then known as University Hall) was the largest educational facility under one roof west of the Mississippi. The Romanesque building is best known for its 148-foot clock tower. The University has invested $50 million toward campus improvements in facilities, landscaping and technology for the benefit of students during the past 12 years. Students have access to state-of-the-art technology that is the most advanced among Kansas private institutions. The University’s endowment and long-term investments have grown from $3 million in 1990 to more than $40 million today. Friends University has maintained reasonable, moderate tuition increases in recent years. In 1990 the University was the third most expensive private institution of higher education in Kansas. Today, Friends is in seventh place in a ranking of undergraduate tuition among 17 independent universities and colleges in Kansas. Friends University is accredited by these organizations: • Higher Learning Commission, North Central Association (NCA) • National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) • Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) • National Association of Schools of Music (NASM)
WHAT our founders, the quakers, believe
• A genuine appreciation for human worth and equality for all • Each person can change the world for the better by influencing others to live meaningful lives • A good education is one that produces men and women who are guided by the principles of justice, mercy, peace, compassion and love • An education should foster eternal versus temporary values and mitigate the drive for power and position for their sake alone

CBASE friends university
A COMPLETE university experience since 1898
The focus of our traditional program has always centered on helping our students develop intellectually, socially and spiritually inside and outside the classroom. Our caring and dedicated faculty members work closely with students to help them achieve their long-held dreams or find a path that is their true calling. Students can choose from more than 40 undergraduate degrees with numerous pre-professional options to find the degree that is right for them. Learning opportunities outside the classroom, including internships, service projects, research projects and studying abroad, prepare our students for work in the real world.
UNIQUE specialties
We have a well-earned reputation in the region for offering outstanding fine arts programs. Our Ballet program is exceptional, and we are only one of several universities in the nation to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ballet. Zoo Science is unique at a national level due to our 10-year-plus partnership with the Sedgwick County Zoo. Zoo Science students take traditional courses on campus and specialized courses at the zoo, where they gain practical experience working with zoo personnel and animal exhibits.

CAPS friends university
A LEADER in a new kind of adult education
CAPS
college of adult and professional studies
Before 1985, working adults in Kansas had to spend years fitting traditional three-hour undergraduate courses into their busy lives to complete their degrees. Adult students needed a program that would provide a first-rate, quality education that was convenient and achievable. This need prompted Friends University to develop the first degree completion program of its kind in Kansas: the Human Resources Management (HRM) program. At that time, no other college or university in the state offered a program specifically designed to help those 25 and older complete their bachelor’s degree while maintaining fulltime employment.
MEETING adult students’ needs today
Today, Friends University offers six degree completion programs that lead to a bachelor’s degree for people with previous college credit. We also offer the Program for Adult College Education (PACE) for students with little or no previous college credit. Students earn their associate’s degree or enter a degree completion program upon completing the PACE program.
AN ADULT-FRIENDLY format for learning
Adult students meet with approximately 20 other students in their cohort group and take courses in blocks, spending several weeks per course. By attending class one night a week, most students complete their coursework within 13 to 24 months, depending on the program.
ATTRIBUTES adult students value
• Quality of programs • Qualified and experienced faculty • Learning concepts in class and applying them in the workplace • Small class sizes in a supportive environment • Strong, collaborative relationships with classmates • Convenience of evening and weekend classes that fit today’s busy lifestyle • Completion of degree in a timely manner while fulfilling work and social responsibilities

GRADUATE friends university
A LIFE-FRIENDLY format for experienced learners
Graduate students attend class with 20 to 25 other students one night a week or every Saturday. They study courses in blocks throughout the program and work together in teams on collaborative projects that relate to their professional jobs. Most programs are completed in 24 months.

GRADUATE
Friends University established its first two graduate programs in 1986 following approval by the University’s accrediting organization. Graduate programs in family studies and management were the first two programs offered, and the list grew quickly in subsequent years. The Graduate School was officially established in 2003 to focus on providing a high-quality learning experience for graduate students. Today, there are more than a dozen graduate programs in a wide range of fields from business administration to Christian ministry.

SERVING the kansas city area since 1989
Friends University has been providing adult education to Kansas City area residents since 1989. The University moved to its current location along I-35 in Lenexa in 2004. The Lenexa Educational Center offers a mix of degree completion and graduate programs designed to meet the needs of adult students in an upscale urban environment. The Kansas City site is known for its professional, approachable and responsive attitude toward students.
SERVING the topeka area since 1993
The first Friends University Topeka site opened its doors in 1993. Just three years later, Friends University built a permanent facility in the Mission Woods area to better serve the community. Adult students attend evening and weekend classes to earn an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree while maintaining their work, family and other responsibilities. Topeka staff and faculty take pride in their support, care and concern for their students.

OUTREACH friends university
A LEADER in taking adult education to rural kansas
Degree completion programs are common among many educational institutions these days, but Friends University was offering working adults educational programs designed to meet their needs in the Wichita region long before other local institutions. It wasn’t long until the University’s history of bringing education to people resulted in the first degree completion offerings outside the Wichita city limits.

offsite locations
In 1989 Friends University took its first degree completion program, the Human Resources Management program, to Hutchinson Community College. Other degree completion programs followed, and the number of community college partnerships rapidly expanded in the 1990s. Today, Friends University partners with more than 15 community colleges so working adults in communities across the state can earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees while maintaining their work, family and social responsibilities.

A tree must grow. But it need not grow very large, in order to produce much fruit. The soil must be good, and the germ of life in the seed must be strong and vital. The growing sapling must remain flexible, to withstand the heavy Kansas winds without breaking. The roots must go deeper, and reach farther, to draw their nourishment from an ever-widening circle. But the tree need not grow large.

FIRST-RATE fine arts enhancing wichita’s cultural life
A select vocal group with worldwide prestige, the Singing Quakers have performed at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, the White House and on many international tours. Our Jazz Ensemble recently toured Italy and France and performed in three international jazz festivals. Our ballet department is the only private university program within an eight-state region that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ballet and hosts an annual production of The Nutcracker as well as fall and spring performances. Inspiring instrumental orchestras and small ensembles, spell-binding dramas and musicals, and thought-provoking art exhibits are offered each year and contribute to Wichita’s rich cultural life.
DEVELOPING well-rounded student-athletes
There’s a reason we call them student-athletes at Friends University: the student always comes first. We offer winning programs in 16 varsity sports (including the only college football game in town), but our student accomplishments in the classroom are most impressive. More than 50 percent of our athletes regularly earn a 3.0 or higher grade point average. We have had more than 35 NAIA All-American scholar athletes in recent semesters and have led the KCAC in the number of All-American scholar athletes for five consecutive years.

STUDENT LIFE friends university
FINDING the “friends fit”
GROWTH opportunities for traditional students
Due to the intimate size of our campus, many traditional students become involved in many different activities and interests. A student may play basketball, sing in a choir, serve on Student Government Association and take a leadership role in Campus Ministries activities – a combination of opportunities that may not be possible at a larger campus.
A NURTURING approach for adult students
Adult students appreciate our underlying Christian emphasis that results in more cooperation, care and concern from instructors and other classmates as they work together in the classroom and on team projects. Although many adults express concerns about returning to school, they find the support, encouragement and extra help that allow them to become more confident in the classroom and beyond.
as a friends university falcon
Students who succeed at Friends University start with a good values system and wish to learn more about themselves and others through further study and exploration. They want to be actively involved in the lives of others and in the life of the campus community. The University places great emphasis on gently guiding and preparing students to be successful in a way that also benefits society.
STUDENT LIFE
No matter whether they are young students seeking a traditional college experience or adults returning to complete an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree, most Friends University students agree there is a definite “Friends Fit.”

COMMUNITY
COMMUNITY friends university
PARTNERS for a stronger community
For more than 15 years, our Wichita campus has closed its doors for one day in December so approximately 300 staff, faculty and students can help the Salvation Army prepare for its holiday distributions to needy families. Topeka and Kansas City alumni advisory boards work with current students each year to conduct a community service project that benefits their communities. Our Center on Family Living in Wichita and Lenexa offers counseling services to local families in need. From helping to clean up after the Greensburg tornado, to collecting items for a local food pantry, to offering fine arts and athletics entertainment that enriches the community, Friends University students, faculty and staff have contributed countless hours to making their communities a better place to be.
BUILDING relationships to enhance student experiences
Friends University establishes strong relationships with companies and organizations that offer students practical experience through internships and other real-world opportunities. We have established advisory boards for our academic programs to gain insight and advice from community and industry leaders about how to keep our programs up-to-date and relevant. Most recently, we have begun working with companies to discover how we can be of better service to them.
NETWORK of active alumni
Friends University has had more alumni named to the Wichita Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 than any other independent university in Kansas. More than 40 alumni actively serve on our alumni advisory boards in Wichita, Topeka and Lenexa. Alumni volunteers assist with University events, make class visits to soon-to-be graduates, conduct community service projects, award scholarships to current students, communicate with other alumni through class agent newsletters, and promote Friends University within their communities.
