Elementary Education You will learn… The Elementary Education program in the College of Adult and Professional Studies prepares adult students to teach grades K-6. Most classes are offered in the evening to allow you to maintain your work, family and other commitments. However, there are occasional daytime and Saturday requirements as you complete your field experiences, including student teaching. Our Elementary Education program has maintained a high level of visibility and excellence throughout the years. Professors in the Education department emphasize the latest techniques for providing quality instruction for children. Friends University enjoys an extremely positive relationship with the public schools in Wichita and the surrounding areas.
With this degree, you can… Graduates are licensed to teach by the state of Kansas after successfully completing the degree and passing the Principles of Learning & Teaching (PLT) Exam as well as the appropriate K-6 content exams. Other requirements include a cumulative 2.75 grade point average with no “D” grades in the major.
You will develop skills in… • Enhancing your talents and skills to benefit the intellectual, physical, emotional and social development of children and make a difference in the world. • Understanding content that will be taught, successfully teaching pupils using content-related pedagogy, designing coherent instruction, assessing and evaluating student learning and providing quality feedback to students and colleagues. • Developing and implementing a classroom environment where all students are engaged and on task. • Implementing and adapting instruction for diverse learners to ensure all students meet expectations. • Establishing professional behaviors, including serving as a student advocate, communicating with families, and maintaining records of attendance, lesson completion and student progress.

How long will it take to complete my degree? This varies depending on several factors, including how much previous college credit you have. However, you can start as soon as you want and finish as soon as you like. You determine your own pace – whether you want to take one evening course per week or more than one per week. Your admissions counselor can give you a better idea of your total time to degree.
How can Prior Learning Assessment help me complete my degree more quickly? You can earn up to 30 hours of college credit toward your degree by earning credit for college-level learning acquired outside the classroom. This can include learning experiences from work, professional training, volunteer activities, military service and life. Ask your admissions counselor for more information about this option.
Can I complete all my classes during the evening?

While most classes for this degree are offered in the evening, there are some requirements that will need to be completed during daytime or weekend hours.
