1. Design-based Art for the Elementary Classroom

Instructor: Ruth Lawlor Dates: June 4-5 Time: 9:00am-4:30pm Course #: ART 1037-16 Grade Level: Elementary Location: Garvey Art 116 Tuition: $145.00 Cr: 1 In this hands-on workshop participants will develop a portfolio filled with grade-appropriate art projects based on National Standards. All projects have been field tested. The lessons can stand independently as artwork or can be interrelated with other subject areas if desired. Participants will need to bring pencil, scissors, Elmer’s Glue-All (NOT Elmer’s School Glue) and a package of 12x18” black construction paper (a digital camera is optional but helpful). There will be a $10 material fee due the first day of the workshop.

This workshop will explore ways to develop appropriate methods to evaluate or measure student achievement. Learn to use a spreadsheet to evaluate test results.

5. Introduction to Bird Biology

Instructor: Dr. Alan Maccarone Dates: June 4-5 Time: 7:30am-3:30pm Course #: SCIE 2023-05 Grade Level: MS/HS Location: Science 127 Tuition: $290.00 Cr: 2 Educators will be introduced to the basics of Avian Biology, including anatomy, morphology, principles of systematics and classification, evolution, ecology, and behavior. Laboratory and field exercises held on both days will emphasize the use of study skins, include the examination and measurement of anatomical characteristics (bills, wings, feathers, and feet), demonstrate the proper use of optical equipment and field guides, as well as the application of techniques that are useful for competent classroom or field instruction in avian biology. Exercises will include field identification of local birds found in different habitats such as riparian areas (along rivers), prairies and grasslands, wetlands, and wooded areas. Important note: Field-based activities will take place at off-campus facilities at a field station. Transportation to off-campus locations will be provided by University vehicles.

6. Water, Water, Everywhere

Instructor: John Richardson Dates: June 4-5 Time: 9:00am-4:30pm Course #: SCIE 2270-07 Grade Level: Elem-MS Location: GPNC Tuition: $145.00 Cr: 1 The availability of an ample, consistent supply of fresh water has a pronounced influence on the flora and fauna of a region. The workshop will focus on the physical characteristics, forms and distribution of water, with an emphasis on the influence of water on life in Kansas and the Wichita area. Related topics will include the water cycle, plate tectonics, air and water currents, climate, and geographic regions. Participants should bring a flash drive or lap top computer for the purpose of downloading the course content and copies of the activities presented. Workshop participants will explore a variety of paper sculpting techniques applicable to the construction of masks. Participants will plan and create a three dimensional mask incorporating design elements, expressive qualities, and attention to craftsmanship. A brief oral presentation will be given by each participant. Participants will also need to bring pencil, scissors, Elmer’s Glue-All (NOT Elmer’s School Glue) and a package of 12x18” black construction paper. A digital camera is optional but helpful.

11. Introduction to Field Biology

Exercises will include the collection, identification, mounting, and display of local wildflowers, insects, birds, fish and aquatic invertebrates, and small mammals. Important note: Most activities will take place at offcampus facilities such as at rivers, prairies, and wooded areas. The locations and directions to all off-campus sites will be provided to participants several weeks before the workshop begins.

12. Nocturnal Adventure Tiger Trek

We will spend the night at the Slawson Family Tiger Trek and discover nocturnal animals and assist with the creation of new education programs. Understanding why students act out and how adults respond to the behavior can improve the learning environment. In this workshop, various behaviors and emotions exhibited by students and potential causes and triggers will be discussed. Effective ways to work with all students in the classroom, providing a positive environment for students, and development of individual and classroom behavior management will be discussed and developed. Participants will be guided to develop a variety of tools to help students and adults develop more positive behaviors in the classroom.

No Drive Time!

FRIENDS UNIVERSITY SUMMER ON-CAMPUS HOUSING All individuals participating in Friends University’s summer education workshops are invited to stay in Green Residence Hall, one of Friends’ on-campus residential facilities, for $20 per person per night. Housing is available from June 1 – August 1 with the exception of a few days.

Green Residence Hall is divided into suites, with each suite containing three two-person bedrooms, a kitchen (including full refrigerator and microwave), two bathrooms and a living area. Suites contain furniture (beds, mattresses, etc.) but no linens are provided. Thus, all individuals are responsible for bringing their own sheets, towels, toiletries, etc. Local phone service, elevators, Internet (hard-line connection; computer with Ethernet cord and cable are required), TV lounges, vending machines and laundry rooms are also available. The use of tobacco and alcohol is prohibited in all university facilities. Pets are not allowed in any buildings.

Individuals wishing to stay in Green Hall must sign up in advance and pay the full amount of their deposit before or upon move-in. To check on availability and sign up for these housing accommodations, please call the Office of Community and Residential Development at 316-295-5500.
