thesis: a private space shared
1/ view from gardens looking towards private units; some occupants may choose to remain private, others may open their living space out into the shared space 2/ looking through gardens towards clusters of dwellings encased by light, winter-garden structure 3/ sectional drawing showing the manual operation of the ventilating skylights in the shared space and how this interacts with a private unit's space. 4/ physical model showing shared entrance area with path winding between clusters of dwellings 5/ interior perspective showing ways occupants might inhabit shared space
The domestic realm following the birth of a child changes in its intimacy and sensitivity; my thesis questions how architectural explorations into the thresholds of shared and private space can inform a design which nurtures the relationship between parent and child without compromising social engagement. This thesis speculates about the societal undercurrents of the increasing desire for privacy in the Western family home and investigates the implications of a shift in the way we seek privacy for ourselves and our families. I am proposing the concept of a shared home for new parents and their children, entitled 'A private space shared', which challenges and alters the interrelationship of private and shared space. The synchronicity in this living environment of permanent and temporary space, private and shared space, socially inclusive and exclusive space sets up thresholds wherein a broad spectrum of spatial appropriation can occur. The proposed shared home for new parents and their children provides a haven in which to nourish the intimate parent-child relationship, without compromising social engagement.

5/ 1/2/3/ Early conceptual models explored the idea of thresholds of privacy in a place of dwelling; a private haven. Using simple plaster and semi-translucent elements arranged to allude to an interior space I was exploring circulation through, and views in and out of this space. 4/5 Sketches of domestic activity imposed onto these simple modelled spaces implied scale and suggested areas of private and shared space 6/ Sketches developed the idea to base the design around prefabricated, modular elements and produce a designed layout like a campground: pods situated looseley around shared space. The fundamental difference is the shared space is sheltered within a larger, polycarbonate 'shell' providing an added threshold of privacy and shared spatial use. 7/ Site model built at 1:100 showing the room units within the 'shells' with the roofs removed 8/ Detailed portion of site plan showing cluster of shared and private dwelling spaces

future christchurch: a timber mill
visitor
2/
This project looked at introducing a new program into post-earthquake Christchurch. A cross-laminated timber mill is envisaged to provide the quality resource of engineered timber to rebuild much of the city, combined with an educational centre so that industry people, prospective clients and tourists alike can visit and learn about the resources availabe for construction. The cell structure of wood formed the basis for formal and programmatic investigation. Studying the flow of nutrients through the cell structure of wood, I became interested in what occurred when the structure was interrupted by an external force, such as fungal attack or exteme climate exposure.

The formal language of the building is influenced by this discovery, wherein an organic structure contorts and infiltrates a stable and ordered external shell. The programmatic layout also derives from the exploration of the behaviour of the cells under external force such as fungal attack. Cell walls begin to break down allowing permeation and movement between.

melbourne: housing for growth This project looks at a flexible housing solution in a low-density context. Each dwelling, of varied size, shape and capactiy, is allocated a 'flexible use space' adjoined to the exterior, for growing, parking, recreation or expansion. This space is characterised by steel beams and columns in place to be used as pergola system or framing for future wall, floor and roof panels to slot into, thus expanding the units.
1/
The ground floor level of each 3-storey block of units is submerged 1900mm to address issues of privacy and sympathy to the context of predominantly single-storey dwellings. The land excavated is reused in building small hills for the community in an extrememly flat landscape. 1/ perspective looking along shared access to units

(opposite page) My involvement in this project for the renovation of a Presbytarian church was to design the new kitchen/reception/servery space at the entrance to the building, plus two more kitchens in other parts of the building. The comparative studies on the opposite page indicate options I presented for the reception area at a preliminary design level. I also played a large role in documenting the building in Autodesk Revit.
(following pages) For this project I translated concept sketches into a fully resolved building in Autodesk Revit, followed by assisting in preparing the resource consent documents as shown. I also designed and drew the planting site plan as shown. The final detail image is a detail I designed and drew of a wall for a different project which required the approximate rebuilding of a fire-damaged bach.
