IN Tgn PIoNEER DAYS oF NoVA SCoTIA THERE CAME to the Province a young surveyor, rumed James Fulton, who was to become the founder of a singularly peacefirl and prosperous community which, though secluded and off the beaten path, has won a world-wide fame for its one productthat of chairs.

With an ambition that qualified him as a land surveyor, James Fulton, at the age of twenty) emigrated in 1760 from Londonderry, Ireland, to New England, where he followed his profession for five yean. Then he was sent to help survey the province of Nova Scotia, and as part compensation was awarded in 1768 a grant of land in the district now known as Bass River. Here he cleared a farm, built himself a sturdy house, rnarried and his fifteen children were born.

For half a cennry James Fulton lived in the homestead he had carved out of the wilderness, was an examplary citizen, became Judge of the County Court of C,ommon Pleas, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia and died in 1826 at the age of 86 years.

Of his many descendants two great grandsons, George Fulton and his brother, William, damned the Bass River, built a sawmill and fumirure factory in 1860 thereby establishing the industry now known as Dominion Chair. And since that time this enterprise has been the chief economic basis of the prosperiry and contentment which distinguishes the village.

George Fulton

For the fint few years of operation the brothers operatd a saw mill and fumiture factory, but following the first of the Iive disastrous fres, in 1885, the Company has concentrated on chair and rocker manufacturing. Over the Company's many years ofcontinuous operation, it has enioyed great successes and devastating hardships but the courage of the management and staffmust be admired for, when following the disastrous lres of 18851892190919401948 and 1989, they tumed to and jointly rebuilt each time the entire manufacturing facility.

The manufacturing facilities and equipment have changed drastically since the days of sailing ships, horses and steam engines yet each chair, rocker and table is still individually crafted by the hands of skilled craftsmen, using seasoned kiln-dded hardwoods harvested from Nova Scotia forests. To show the grain and beauty ofthe solid hardwoods the finish department, in co-operation with a leading finish manufacturer, uses a special lacquer made to our specifications which provides a wearresistant finish preserving the natural beauty of Dominion chairs.

Today Dominion Chair Limited is very young in spirit, a miracle in spite of its years. And in the excellence of its product it is fulfilling the promise of Emerson, written in his Joumal just five years before its founding. For the world has truly made a beaten path to its doorl
