Eleanor Amoroso

Inspired by dramatic contemporary design, she has developed her own unique technique of making garments from long lengths of fringing and using macramé techniques to create innovative knits. She has both reinvented and modernised an ancient craft, which she will continue to develop with her brand. Every piece is entirely made by hand and not machine, so no wonder her work has previously been described as ‘commemoration of the forgotten art of craftsmanship’. We had the chance to catch up with her and she gave us an insight in her work, inspiration and idols. WHAT

wardrobe inspection: basic appeal //by Kat Ober
Blogger rookie Stevie-Rose has my envy just for having such straight forward, capsule wardrobe. The 18 year old Liverpudlian girl already pin-pointed her signature look and rocks the minimal style. You won’t see wild patterns or bold colours on her blog instead a quite monochrome look that focusses a lot more on the cut than on the prints. A welcome change to the usual blogger look, which is why we asked her to take part in our Wardrobe Insight feature.
Instead of orientating herself by a style icon – she finds inspiration on street style blogs such as Hoy Boutique and other websites. Having recently finished her graphic design course she is dreaming of a minimal apartment in Paris and writing for a fashion magazine. Her signature look with a boyish twist consists of oversized blazers, skinny crop trousers, shirts, really oversized t-shirts, tote bags and cuffs. Check yourself how chic a simple as possible wardrobe can look like!

Katarina Soskic //by Pia Birk
27 year-old photographer Katharina Soskic, who was born in Serbia but currently lives in Vienna, brings back the charm of traditional photography. By using the ‘mistakes’ of her analogue camera and playing with lights and blur, she creates that nostalgic and dreamy atmosphere that makes her images very unique and distinctive. Katarina told us about her inspiration, fashion photography, about music and furthermore about her averseness to digital photography.

Emma Elina Keira Jones and Amanda M. Jansson //by Kat Ober
Everyone knows two’s a company three’s a crowd and being alone is anything but fun – so it is not surprising that many artists ally. This is also the case with Emma Elina Keira Jones and Amanda M. Jansson two analogue photographers who seen the advantage of them bonding and so far have been featured in various magazines such as Contributor, HONK! or Girlzine. Each of their photographs perfectly displays their influences but even if it is the same model – each of the photos seems to tell a different story – keep on reading if you want to know how they got into photography in the first place and where they find inspiration.

KNEON
Little online publications and printed zines are seeming to fight the overall opinion that print is dead and news and information will in future only be publicized via quick social media solutions, like blogs and twitter. Instead, it looks like there is more and more creative people out there who use the platform, the internet provides, to publish their very own take on a magazine as well as to promote the latter. The first person we interviewed on this subject is Victoria Jin, who recently relocated from Austria to England and who is probably one of the or the pioneers of Austrian Independent online fashion magazine publishing – if not that, she’s the best. Frock&Roll quized her about her inspirations, views on magazine publishing and current work on the next issue of KNEON.

Das kleine Schwarze Print has been proclaimed dead and the sales figures only underline this statement. For some reason though independent publications seem to flourish – no matter if online or offline as printed zines. What is a zine though and what drives people to publish those? Well, first of all a zine is designed for a very limited target audience, and usually distributed on a small scale. The term itself is short for “magazine”. A zine is often regarded as a news organ of an underground community and had its climax in the 70s when the counterculture was at its peak but also in the 90s along the riot grrrl movement. Frock&Roll had the chance to have a q&a with the two publishers, Maximilian Huber & Lucas Gerstgrasser, of Austrian zine Das Kleine Schwarze which shines a light on Viennese and Austrian underground culture.

Faris Badwan // Interview by Kat Ober & Carlton Gibson // Photography by Neil Krug
No one expected The Horrors to stick around long when they first released “Jack The Ripper” and the like back in 2005 – they were mainly known for their big hair and skinny skeleton legs. But then there was Primary Colours something which probably has come as quite a shock to the vast majority of people, who dismissed the band from Southend-on-Sea during their initial hype-fuelled rise, and even raked a Mercury Award nomination for themselves. And then there was Skying – a pure masterpiece. Most certainly the album that channeled the vibe of 2011 the best -
plaintive and somber. Lyrics that are far from the ones of the hyped bands of 2011, The Vaccines or Viva Brother – intense and vague at the same time. Who would have expected The Horrors creating and brooding over a song like ‘Still Life’ back in 2007? Well, yet they kept on arranging fierce and noir undertones throughout and manage to categorically cataloguing a lifetime of influences. Even though in our interview Faris Badwan, the lead singer, didn’t seem to be too keen of giving us an insight into those. We think the influences of musicians are interesting,
frock&roll. 53
no matter if they might draw influences of cartoons whilst sitting on the toilet or if they like the sound of a 90s Gameboy game – as interested listeners we like to get to know about those things, we might discover new music – and in the end Faris gave us only a little hint on his influences. But for a person that acted deep there was quite some intractability to answer questions that would have enabled us to look underneath the surface. For a person that wants to be taken seriously in the music scene he tried a bit too hard on acting the part – being all up
for watching the football in the backstage room of the venue to a completely changed Faris that awaited us in the completely chaotic tour bus in his thinking posture . Focusing on his hands a lot more than the flamboyant character did on our questions and somewhat acting like he was ‘skying’. An interview with Faris Badwan seems to be doing a lot more for his ego than we might have expected. We had something to laugh up our sleeves anyway: Despite giving us a hard time interviewing him, he was locked out of his own venue laptop in hand.

fallulah //by Kat Ober
Fallulah could be the love child of Lykke Li and Marina& The Diamonds - she makes raw but confident indie pop that combines the eccentricity of Bat for Lashes, the musicality of Kate Bush and the spirit of Lykke Li, all amidst a uniqueness that makes her hugely fresh and exciting. Already a star in her hometown of Copenhagen and native Denmark, Fallulah is ready to make her mark on the rest of Europe. Fallulah leaves her own imprint on a mix of Indie rock and Balkan beats, which adds a hint of folklore to her productions. Only 25-years-old half Dane, half Romanian and with a personality that is sensitive, vulnerable, strong-willed and defiant which comes out vividly in her music, Fallulah is one exciting young lady that you should keep your eyes peeled for in 2012.

Zulu Winter //by Kat Ober
Who knows who really will be responsible delivering the hot new shit of the British island? Well we hope we do! There are a few clues why – the Guardian’s Paul Lester featured them, they have played an enormously promising first headline gig in London last November so far, they release on Double Denim, have the same management as the likes of The Vaccines and obviously: they talk to us. The London 5 piece wraps their atmospheric, dreamy sound round singer Will Daunt’s falsetto vocals. Having been labeled as the new Wild Beasts, Friendly Fires and The Vaccines already Zulu Winter will tell us how it feels to be the latest buzz in the music and blogger world.

“Savages, with their rare cuts and organ hooks. Grafting Wave, dance and classical influences upon themes of time, violence and absence. Theirs is a surprising and well executed alloy. The macabre impulse shared by very different London bands offsets erased history, City ennui, digital paranoia. Wills into life a new timeline, fresh legs. Injury, illness, loneliness haunt these lyrics, lurk beneath surface calm. 'Fragments of deranged dreams veer across the night air above the raucous neon'. Black lungs, leaden limbs, and red eyes at a dislocation dance. Attack music.
