Eastern option emerges for new motorway junction SOUTH Gloucestershire Council leaders have stressed that no formal decisions have been taken on the site for a new M4 junction after revealing a second option for its location. They said an original proposal for land north of the motorway between Henfield and Emersons Green was still being considered - the so-called western option. However, the authority announced it was also looking at an eastern option near Westerleigh and the two sites would form part of an eightweek consultation exercise due to start on August 21. The council said: “Work on the study is not due to be completed until 2018, therefore it is important to stress that these proposals are at an early stage, no formal decisions have been taken and there is not a preferred option on the table. “Further details on how to comment will be provided nearer to the consultation launch date, later in August.” Full story on pages 8&9.

Donation in memory of community stalwart helps meet target for medieval barn appeal AN appeal to raise £10,000 for Winterbourne Medieval Barn has been reached, with one of the donations received given in memory of a campaigner who helped save the important structure. The “substantial donation” to Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust came from Christopher Dunn to remember his mother, Nancy. She had been heavily involved in community matters in Winterbourne, especially during the 1960s and 1970s when there was a big expansion in housing in the village but few community facilities or organisations for all the new residents. Mrs Dunn was a founder

member of the Winterbourne Flower Club, which is still thriving after more than 50 years, and of the Winterbourne Society, which was active in saving the historic barn. It was the society that had raised concerns in the 1970s about the future of the building and succeeded in getting its heritage value recognised locally and nationally through a regrading in 1979 to grade-two* listed status. Mrs Dunn also played a crucial role in getting local people involved in the process to save the barn. Fellow Winterbourne Society founder member, Kathleen Marsh, said: “Before Nancy

died, it was to become a real pride for her to experience its great success as an extra useful cultural facility in the village. “Nancy could spot and activate gaps in community life, setting up groups for the young and old alike.” Mrs Dunn’s husband, Alfred, also played an important part in the locality as he was headteacher of St Michael’s Primary School in Winterbourne for 33 years, including when Harry Potter author JK Rowling was a pupil. When learning of his death in 2001, she told her family she “remembered him fondly, his shiny bald head and his love of

Bristol Rovers" . The trust said as a result of work by people such as Mrs Dunn, the barn was in a good state of repair. However, some of the other buildings on the site were unsafe and urgently needed to be repaired before they affected the fabric of the barn itself. Currently, the trust has reached the second round of securing a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund that will ensure survival of the barn and its associated buildings. It had to raise money itself as part of that process, the reason behind the £10,000 appeal.

Ride and Stride event to help raise funds for church repair grants PEOPLE in the Frome Valley area are being encouraged to join in a fund raising event to help churches in need of repairs or improvements. The annual Ride and Stride day will support the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust, which offers grants to eligible churches of any Christian denomination across South Gloucestershire, north Bristol and Gloucestershire. Those enrolling for the event on Saturday, September 9, will be urged to seek sponsorship to ride, walk or drive between their local churches. All money raised will be split between the trust and the participants’ nominated churches. Last year’s Ride and Stride raised nearly £50,000 while the trust distributed £130,000 in grants. It is hoped as many churches as possible will be open on the day to welcome visitors.

Giant load causes big headache after breaking down en route to Iron Acton sub-station

A HEAVY haulage lorry carrying a transformer to the Iron Acton sub-station broke down as the driver was negotiating a hill, causing disruption to the road network for hours. The 187ft (57 metres) lorry, which weighed in at 231 tonnes, was being driven up Tortworth Hill after leaving the M5 at junction 14 in Falfield. But it came to a grinding halt, forcing road closures to be put in place while repairs were carried out by specialist teams. Drivers had been warned in advance of hold-ups while the load was on the move on Sunday, July 30, as the lorry could only travel

at between ten and 15mph due to its size and weight. But the breakdown meant two sliproad lanes off the M5 had to be closed, as well as Tortworth Hill, from lunchtime until about 7.30pm. A National Grid spokesman said the transformer, which changes the voltage of electricity before it is transmitted through the power network, finally got to its Iron Acton destination at 9pm, some six hours later than planned. He said: “We’re sorry for the disruption the breakdown caused. We organise many transformer moves and a problem like this is very rare.”

The vehicle had set off from Avonmouth at 9am and had to follow an indirect route to avoid weak bridges, narrow turning points and other hazards. It meant it had to go up the M5 to Stroudwater before turning round and heading south again to Falfield, with a police escort and haulage team accompanying the lorry. Sightseers even turned out to watch the convoy until it got stuck. Once on the move again, the final stage of the journey took the vehicle on through Rangeworthy and Latteridge to its final destination.

Citizens Advice takes a stand against scams in South Gloucestershire CITIZENS Advice South Gloucestershire has been taking part in a campaign to help prevent people falling victim to scams.

report their experience. The drive comes as Citizens Advice nationally has revealed a 17 per cent increase in people being scammed after buying phantom goods. It said the scam works by conning shoppers into buying high value items, often online, which turn out not to exist. The average loss was £1,100. People were most likely to be scammed when buying cars, flights and furniture. Other phantom goods included jewellery and cameras. The Citizens Advice consumer service received 555 reports of such scams during January and March 2017, compared with 495 over the same period in the previous year. Scams reported to Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire in the past year include online shopping and auction scams – the most commonly reported type of fraud in the area.

Chantal Watts, general manager of Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire said: “Being scammed can ruin people’s finances. “People can lose significant amounts from phantom goods scams, so it’s important they don’t rush into online purchases until they’re sure the seller is genuine. “We’re encouraging people to report and talk about scams so that more fraudsters can be stopped. “People can also come and see us or call the Citizens Advice consumer service if they want advice on whether something is a genuine deal or a scam, or for advice if they have been scammed.” The consumer service can be contacted on 03454 040506. 11 year old plays four rounds of golf in charity fundraising effort ETHAN Holway likes golf, even at just 11 years old. But even by his standards, playing 72 holes in one day is a big ask. AN original plan to create a new junction for the M4 north of the motorway between Henfield and Emersons Green is to remain an option despite an alternative location near Westerleigh being considered. In an unexpected announcement, it was revealed that a possible junction 18a could be built near Westerleigh instead. The proposal emerged from a £500,000 feasibility study into creating a junction 18A between Tormarton and the M32. It would mean building a link road from a junction on the B4465 Westerleigh Road to the A4174 ring road at Siston, skirting Pucklechurch and cutting it off from neighbouring Parkfield. Two potential routes for this link road have been suggested, both crossing green belt land.

MPs Chris Skidmore and Luke Hall with Bob Symons, of Pucklechurch Parish Council The Westerleigh/ Pucklechurch idea has been called the eastern option, while the original concept of a junction behind the science park at Emersons Green is the western option. A provisional map released by the council shows both options as having a “potential future link to Yate” - a possible road to link up with the town’s so-called road-to-nowhere. At an open air meeting organised by Pucklechurch Parish Council, about 300 people heard MPs Luke Hall and Chris Skidmore pledge to oppose the Westerleigh plan and press for the Emersons Green suggestion. Mr Hall, the Thornbury and Yate MP, said the eastern option was completely untenable. Kingswood MP Mr Skidmore, who has campaigned for a junction 18A throughout his time in Parliament, vowed to end his support unless the eastern option was dropped.

He said it had been a “complete shock” to him to discover that the feasibility study, for which he had secured Government funding, had come up with the eastern option “out of the blue”. Colin Hunt, South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “We recognise that creating a new motorway junction is not something that will be popular with everyone, but there is a very real need to ease congestion in this part of South Gloucestershire and provide better access to key employment hubs and residential areas. “The options for junction 18A are at a very early stage and the proposals will be subject to a formal consultation period.” The official eight-week consultation starts on August 21 and exhibitions will be held in Westerleigh, Pucklechurch and Emersons Green as part of the process.

Library to be closed for two weeks to get ready for new access arrangements WINTERBOURNE library is due to be closed for a fortnight as part of preparations for the introduction of seven-day-aweek opening. A system called Open Access will start in the library - and eight others in South Gloucestershire - in October to allow registered card holders into the premises even when they are unstaffed. The extended hours offered will give people the chance to browse, borrow and renew books and other materials, or to use the space for studying. But extra security and computer equipment has to be installed ahead of the system being launched and the twoweek closure at Winterbourne will allow that work to be carried out. South Gloucestershire Council said users would still be able to access all online services

while the library was shut and no-one would be fined if their book should have been due back during the closure period. Heather Goddard, the council’s cabinet member for communities said: “We are very

Drama, nature and heritage to feature TWO drama productions are set to be hosted at Winterbourne Medieval Barn, with audiences invited to enjoy a picnic before the curtain goes up. A new adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland is scheduled for a 2.30pm performance on Sunday, August 13, with gates opening at 1pm. The Festival Players will be making a welcome return to the venue on Tuesday, August 29, at 7pm to perform Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor with an all-male company of six actors playing multiple roles. New system for minor injuries unit to prevent long delays EXTRA staff and a new waiting system will be introduced at Yate’s Minor Injuries Unit to try and avoid long queues building up. The unit (MIU) has had to close early on a number of occasions due to high demand to ensure patients are seen and that clinic rooms are empty by the time the unit closes. From August 1, national urgent care guidance will be adopted, which means the MIU will close during the day for short periods when the number of people waiting starts to build up. It will re-open once those patients have been seen. Carrie Wedgwood of Sirona,

which runs the unit at the West Gate Centre, said demand for the unit had increased dramatically in the past three years and at times all three clinic rooms were used by people waiting for ambulances to be transferred to hospital, which had a knock-on effect on the service. An average of 50 people were seen every weekday by the fourstrong nursing team, with as many as 80 dealt with on some days. Although many had complex conditions or severe injuries, time was also taken up dealing with such things as paper cuts, people who had run out of prescribed medication or

verrucas which could be treated more speedily at a pharmacy. Ms Wedgwood said the unit aimed to meet the national standard of seeing people within four hours and the new system would mean people would not be waiting for many hours. She said: “We recently piloted it and closed when the unit had nearly a four hour wait. We were able to catch up within two hours and re-open. “As Mondays and the Tuesdays after a bank holiday are always busy, where possible we will be ensuring we have an additional member of staff available on those days.” She reminded people to

use the MIU appropriately. It can deal with such things as sprains and strains, cuts and grazes, injuries to the arm, lower leg and foot, superficial bites, minor burns and scalds, minor head injuries, broken noses, nosebleeds and eye problems such as scratches or foreign bodies. The unit is open on weekdays from 8.30am- 7.30pm and at weekends and bank holidays from 10am-1.30pm. The X-ray facility is run by North Bristol NHS Trust and does not open at weekends

An exciting year for sixth-formers at Colston’s School

SIXTH-formers at Colston’s have just completed a very successful year, both inside and outside the classroom. Alongside their academic studies students participated in a range of co-curricular sporting and creative activities, community volunteering projects and the school’s innovative Future Leaders programme. Through this programme students are not only taught specific employability and life skills, but are also given the opportunity to experience reallife projects designed to stretch them and to fill any gaps they have in their professional profile. Involvement with real companies (this year’s students worked with Rolls-Royce, TasteTech and Superdry among others) gives the students a valuable insight into what employers and universities are looking for. The professional projects culminated in a presentation evening, during which the students confidently pitched their ideas to industry experts, with an added dimension of excitement as they competed against their peers to be the winning team. Sophie Reed, who is studying sciences and mathematics, described the professional project she took part in this year: “We really enjoyed developing our research skills in the field

of science whilst learning a lot about the marketing and financial side of the industry too. My favourite part of the project was our visit to TasteTech as it enabled us to see how products, similar to the one we designed, are being developed in the industry.” Dr Paul Hill, deputy headmaster at Colston’s, commented: “We have seen a tangible impact of the Future Leaders programme with some incredible university, apprenticeship and employment offers being made to our students. It is clear the universities and employers really value the work our students are doing to develop outstanding employability skills.” It’s not just the staff and students who are proud of the Future Leaders programme; it has received external recognition and was recently a finalist for an Education and Business Partnership Award at the Bristol Post Education Awards. These students are now looking forward to joining the Upper Sixth in September, with all the opportunities for leadership that Colston’s provides through its prefect system and peer mentoring scheme, ensuring that they are well equipped to continue to succeed when they leave school.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style With diesel cars falling out of favour, and not everyone willing, or able, to buy new, Richard starts his investigation into the used Alternatively-Fuelled Vehicles (AFV) market: Toyota Prius 2009 – 2015: Uberquitous. For drivers wishing to contribute to cleaner air in South Gloucestershire, let’s start at the beginning: Toyota’s Prius was the

starting point for mass-produced hybrids, and after a slow start these odd-looking hatchbacks are now everywhere - 4 million worldwide sales over twenty years. Many of us have been in a Prius, if not as the driver then as a passenger; Uber would be lost without them. The model I’m testing is a 2009 third generation, with a very gently tuned 1.8 litre

petrol engine combining with a 1.3KWh battery to produce 134hp. The Prius comes with a lot of very clever technology, including the ‘Hybrid Synergy Drive’ (Toyota’s all-electronic gearbox) as well as regenerative braking, which charges the battery as you slow down. That’s all fine as long as it’s working, but should you buy one over a conventional car? Toyotas are supremely reliable, and despite added complexity the Prius upholds that reputation - see minicab ranks for further proof of their longevity. Battery failure rates are very low, and the battery warranty was extended to 8 years from June 2010. Toyota claim the battery should last the lifetime of the car, whatever that means, and if it does fail, Toyota charge £955 plus VAT and fitting. In 2012 they introduced a plugin option, which only really works if you have a driveway. Replacement batteries for this version are an eyewatering £4,700. When new, Toyota claimed an incredible 70mpg, and there is no road tax payable on a third generation Prius (whereas a new one will cost you £110 for the first year). This test car has enough room inside, however the rear seats would be more suitable for two rather than three. Storage is good - there’s a wide and low-lipped boot and plenty of cup holders and @ cubby-holes. relaxing. The A432 to Yate section of my test route showed up the electronic fly-by-wire brakes as tricky though – they were the subject of a recall, so check this has been done. Pedal feel and bite was unpredictable, ditto the automatic gearbox, which has that peculiar ‘elastic band’ sensation you get from this type of system. You might get used to it after a while. Driving on purely electric power proved to be a difficult and pointless challenge – I managed one mile at less than 30mph before the petrol engine almost imperceptibly joined the party. Don’t push the Prius, cruise it that’s really the point of this car. Toyota’s 70mpg claim turns out to be fantasy – expect 55mpg, which is still exceptional for a 5 door petrol hatchback. The Prius used to be the only hybrid show in town, but is now competing in an increasingly crowded market. If the alternative was a soon-to-be-obsolete diesel hatchback, I might choose the Prius. However I suspect there are now other, better AFV options out there. What to pay: £6k for a 2009 mega-mile ex-Uber, £18k for a low mileage end of the line 2015 model. Chairman chooses two charities to support during his term of office A CHARITY that provides mental health support and information to young people has been chosen by the recently elected chairman of South Gloucestershire Council to help during his term of office. Councillor Ian Blair has selected Off the Record (OTR), which has been a registered charity since 1965 and offers free, confidential help to those aged between 11 and 25, as one of two organisations to benefit. As well as a base in Bristol, it runs sessions in South Gloucestershire, including in Yate, Little Stoke and Patchway. The second organisation to be supported is Borderlands, which helps refugees and asylum seekers. Each year the new chairman or woman of the council chooses a charity or charities to promote, with any donations received

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH I AM writing this piece whilst waiting for a delayed train. I have been up since 4.30am this morning, safely delivering a daughter to Gatwick and then sitting in an M25 traffic jam before arriving at the station to find the ticket machine out of order and my local train back in to London for a meeting cancelled. So far I haven’t lost my rag, but the day is still young. I am imagining that by the time you are reading this the reality of the long awaited ring road delays and closures may be biting, will Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath be at a standstill? As someone who has the privilege of normally working within the village where I live, I can say I'm feeling for commuters and the impact that these delays, as well as rail disruption will have on them and their families. So how can we cope? I am a great believer that we need to learn to turn adversity into opportunities. So here are two suggestions. Those who know me will not be surprised at my first suggestion: get on your bike! Having taken up cycling only around five years ago, I cannot

Even for a weaker cyclist an hour is realistic. I suspect journey times once the ring road and viaduct work are underway maybe well in excess of this, and how much better for you, and indeed for our beautiful planet. If cycling is not for you then I’m afraid you will have to learn patience instead. Frankly we live in world where we expect everything faster be that next day delivery or hyper fast broadband. We want it all and we want it now! I am increasingly of the view that this is not good for us. Rather than speeding up we need to learn to slow down. When faced with delays we jump lanes or we complain or we try

and imagine the rat runs that no-one else has found. In fact we do anything but actually wait. I must be careful here as I'm hardly famous for my patience. But I have been practicing: quite literally the spiritual practice of learning to wait. Some train themselves by running or picking up heavy weights...the practice of waiting is exercised by such delights as choosing the longest queue at checkouts or practising doing absolutely nothing. We live in such a goal driven society that for many the idea of waiting is almost inconceivable. However most ancient cultures and life itself teach us the virtue of learning to wait patiently. In a world where food is delivered to us from a supermarket we can’t imagine the patience of the farmer, who plants and waits while seeds grow and sun and rain nourish the crop. We are so busy that we even say that we have no time left to breathe. Well were this true we

would of course be actually dead. As it is, I fear that as a society we are allowing ourselves to be almost spiritually dead, no longer learning to wait and watch and savour all the goodness around us. So here comes the punch line. If you are sitting in a traffic jam, rather than frustrate yourself by thinking of the things you can’t now be doing, do well what you are actually doing. Turn off the radio or the music and become aware of your breathing. Take a good look around you, beyond the traffic, or even within the traffic, look for the things that are good and wonderful and savour them. Remember the day you’ve had and say thank you in your heart. Enjoy the fact that you are breathing and savour the very gift of life all around you So I hope you have a blessed, relaxing, cycling filled and patience discovering summer. Government supports provision of new special free school for South Gloucestershire A NEW special free school will be provided in South Gloucestershire after the Government announced it would fund its construction. There will now be a fourmonth process involving organisations interested in running the new school to submit their plans. The school will be for children with severe learning difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties. It is proposed that it will become a centre of excellence, giving schooling to as many as 112 pupils from nursery age to post-16 youngsters.

South Gloucestershire Council was approved for the school because of the continuing growing demand on its existing specialist education services. Significant numbers of children with learning disabilities are required to travel some distance to schools and services outside the district and the new school will help local families find a place closer to home. Plans submitted by potential operators will be assessed by the council and the Department for Education, with the preferred option passed to the Education Secretary for approval.

Wellbeing roadshow comes to Winterbourne Library AN event dedicated to wellbeing is coming to Winterbourne Library in September. Curo Community Connectors and the Library are organising the event as part of a series of roadshows throughout South Gloucestershire. The Winterbourne Library event is being held on Tuesday 12 September from 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm. Roadshows will have stalls offering local ways to lift your mood such as clubs, college courses, free sports vouchers and activity opportunities. There is even a chance to have a go on a static bicycle that makes your own healthy smoothie. Sarah Presley, a qualified Meditation Teacher will run free mindfulness sessions. She said:Â "It is an excellent opportunity for us to show people that, in a fast paced world, you can bring mindful moments to every day"

n AROUND THE W.I. Frampton Cotterell WI

Back by popular demand we have had a second talk from the wonderful Frances Benton: “A Passion for Pearls – Part II”. Frances was invited back as the first talk was so fascinating – she really does know all there is to know about the subject. Amongst other things, we learnt how to tell real pearls from fake ones, how to tell which pearls are the best quality and that the shine on a pearl is what really gives it its grade. Frances brought a range of

her hand-made pearl jewellery to show and for sale on the night, all the profits of which go to a charity which helps to look after street children in Africa. We later had the great news that enough money was raised on the night to educate 2 street children for a year. July was a very eventful month for Frampton WI. Our Member’s summer meal out took place on the 5th July – a “Cowboy Tapas” night at The Smokehouse (at The Swan Inn, Winterbourne). It was a lovely warm Summer evening,

which we all enjoyed. We set up our annual home made cakes and treats stand at The Frampton Festival on the 15th July, when our members worked hard baking scones, flapjacks, tray bakes, sausage rolls etc. for sale on the day. In spite of it being a bit overcast, there was still a great turnout for the event and we all enjoyed our time at the festival. In July we had The Great Western Air Ambulance in for our monthly meeting to tell us more about their great work as a charity. In August we have a break from the monthly meetings. These will resume again in September. That said, we have booked a tour of the Six O’Clock / Bramley and Gage gin distillery in Thornbury for the 19th August, and so a group of members will be meeting up for that with a local pub lunch beforehand. Amongst other things, a talk on the history of the Police Force and a Belly Dancing lesson from a professional dancer are in store for us during the late summer/early Autumn months. Visitors and new members

are welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. There is a charge of £2.50 for the evening and any new members can also join by paying a membership fee. AFTER 16 years of being President of Bradley Stoke Lions Club, one year of which he was also President of Parent Club, Bristol Brunel Club, Robin finally relinquished the role due to decining health and handed over the Presidency and the gong to Michael Lane. Club members and family were there to share the moment. Robin was presented with a bottle of his favourite Malt Whisky by the club and a beautiful whisky glass engraved with the Lions Logo, his name and the words “In appreciation”. Robin was delighted and very touched. Another highlight of the evening was the presentation to Heather, one of our older members, of a certificate from Lions Club International and signed by our District Governor to recognise the many hours Heather has given each week to caring for her friends and neighbours in Woodlands Park. When she is not cooking food for neighbours or visiting the sick, she crochets blankets for premature babies. A true Lion who puts everyone else before herself.

n FLORAL FRIENDS Winterbourne Evening WI

Our recent speaker was Patricia Pearson, who spent 38 years working for the Foreign and Colonial Office in various parts of the "Empire on which the sun never sets". Patricia met her husband while working in Islamabad and celebrated their engagement on a houseboat in Kashmir. The same houseboat was featured in The Jewel in the Crown film. Her engagement present was not a ring but a beautiful silk Kashmiri rug which has been in constant use ever since and shows no sign of wear. Despite the difficult and sometimes dangerous situations in which Patricia and her husband found themselves it seems that the embassy staff managed to have a good social scene in their compound. Amateur Dramatics played a big part in their lives with very professional productions. Their costumes outdoors be made very cheaply and so could be very elaborate. Patricia rsaid that if anyone had a child or grandchild with a flair for languages she would thoroughly recommend it as a career. In August we will have a trip to Cheddar Chocolate Factory and Clarks Village instead of our meeting. The speaker at our September meeting will be Elizabeth Rhode who will tell us about Bristol and the Sugar Trade. Do come along and join us at 7.30pm in the St Michael Room, High Street, Winterbourne on the second Thursday of every month except August. You can be sure of a very warm and friendly welcome.

Floral Hat Festival

We’re delighted with the success of the Floral Hat Festival which was hosted for us by the Zion United Church over the weekend of 24/25 June and which celebrated the local hatting heritage with flowers. Celia Zlobec (Chair of Floral Friends) said: “The floral displays from different community groups were both inspiring and amazing, such thought and care had gone into them, and we were entertained by superb local musicians and local historians who delivered a very interesting and informative talk on our village's hatting heritage.” Children were entertained with a rabbit trail (rabbits were used in hatting) and enjoyed making their own hats. Many people joined in the spirit by wearing their own floral hat. It was a wonderful community event, bringing together young and old in a heart warming atmosphere. Thank you to all those who supported us at this event. All money raised by donations will fund more flowers for Frampton Cotterell.

Youth Club Paint Planters

Members of the local Youth Club have painted two of the Brockeridge Centre planters forget me not blue. This colour was chosen to show support for dementia sufferers.

A new planter bench has now been set up in School Road with the help of donations from local residents. It brightens up this corner of School Road and provides a welcome spot to stop and enjoy the flowers. Youngsters to turn detective in annual summer reading challenge

CHILDREN will turn into super sleuths to crack a case during this year’s summer reading challenge in South Gloucestershire’s libraries. Youngsters between the age of four and 11 can take part in the challenge, which has a theme of animal agents. It is based on a detective agency staffed by a variety of creatures who set out to solve a case at their local library with help from their friends. The challenge runs until September 16 and is free to join. Children should go to their local library and sign up to read six library books during the summer. As they finish each one, they will collect stickers to help them crack the clues and assist the animal agents find out what’s really been going on behind the scenes. Those who manage to read

all six books and solve the case will get a medal, certificate and a free child’s ticket for the Wild Place Project or a free library DVD hire. Rachael Hunt, vicechairwoman of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “Children’s literacy skills can dip during the long summer holidays but taking part in the challenge keeps children reading. “More than 6,600 children in South Gloucestershire took part in last summer’s challenge and this year we hope more children than ever will be inspired to take part and make use of their local library.” Libraries are also holding free activities throughout the summer to help children complete the challenge - from Bristol Zoo workshops to craft sessions and meeting a guide dog.

Pedal power for police patrols POLICE in Winterbourne are taking to two wheels this summer to get around their beats. Avon and Somerset Police have invested in new electric bikes so that officers on larger beats can take to two wheels and still patrol effectively. Officers in Winterbourne have taken delivery of the new bikes as well as in Chipping Sodbury and Cotswold Edge, Charfield, Cadbury Heath and Oldland. Neighbourhood Inspector Clive Summerill said: “Beat managers and PCSOs in our towns already patrol on foot or bicycle. In some of our more rural beats that’s been more difficult. “Four beats now have electric bikes, which will enable them to get around more effectively than pedal power alone while being more visible and accessible than patrolling by car.

Satisfaction rates soar for Merlin’s services Overall customer satisfaction with the services provided by a South Gloucestershire housing association are continuing to rise. Social landlord Merlin has announced that customer satisfaction with its services has risen in the period April – June 2017 to 86.5%, up from 85.3% recorded in the previous quarter. It means that average satisfaction over the past year has increased to 84.8%. Satisfaction with the quality of people’s neighbourhoods also rose up to 89.7%, while satisfaction with rent as value for money increased by more than 6% to 86.2%.

And Merlin recognises that providing a world class repairs service is key to raising satisfaction to these levels. Chief Executive Robert Nettleton said: “Delivering repairs and maintenance right first time is one of the objectives in our Corporate Plan 2015-2019. We know too that the endto-end delivery of repairs is the single biggest influence on customer satisfaction; getting this right will lead to improved customer satisfaction.” Over the past three months satisfaction with Merlin’s repairs service has hit an all-time high of 85.1%. This has been achieved by staff working to resolve customer issues faster and taking steps to ensure they don’t impact other customers, enabling the housing association to complete more repairs right first time.

Almost 200 cars and motorbikes embarked on the 85-mile route around Gloucestershire before arriving back in time for lunch at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club. They helped to raise almost £10,000 for local good causes and charities. The oldest vehicle to enter was a 1925 Austin Clifton tourer, and first off at 8.30am was a 1934 Chrysler CA Con Coupé owned by Nicholas Milner of Yate closely followed by another Chrysler, this time a 1930 77 Royal Coupé. Rotarian and co-organiser Mark Benstock said, “ We’ve had more people coming to see the cars this year than we’ve ever had before. In previous years we’ve ended at different venues, but ending at the Ridings helped to make the event more of a special day for Chipping Sodbury.”

Yate man selected for blind sailing championships A BLIND man from Yate has been selected for the Great Britain Blind Sailing team as they defend their world title in America. Mark Austen will helm one of four yachts representing Britain at the 2017 Blind Fleet Racing Open World Sailing Championships to be held at Sheboygan on Lake Michigan. Mark who has trained and sailed with the GB Blind Sailing team for two years, said: “When I started sailing with British Blind Sailing in 2015 I set myself the goal of representing GB and I am so very proud to have been selected to race with the GB Team in the World Sailing Championships for Blind and Partially Sighted people.” Mark has to find the money for training and racing. His personal expenses to attend all training during the year comes to almost £5,000. Mark said: “I’ve been Fundraising by playing my Saxophone at public and private events. The Tesco Superstore in Yate and Waitrose in Chipping Sodbury have both allowed me to busk in their stores over the past two years. Summer circus comes South Glos Show to SS Great Britain ready to roll

A VICTORIAN Summer Circus is coming to the SS Great Britain for the summer holidays. Cirque Bijou will be entertaining visitors to the historic ship in Bristol, inspired by the Great Britain’s voyages. Based on the ‘Crossing the Line’ initiation ceremonies performed by sailors to mark the first time one of their own crossed the equator, the spectacle will feature juggling and acrobatics. Visitors can learn new circus skills with free, drop-in workshops on Brunel Square.

Speed up recovery of tennis elbow by Rebecca Reece, Willow Brook Clinic WITH the better weather rolling in and Wimbledon over, some of us may be thinking about dusting off our tennis rackets or opening the shed and getting out the trowel and hedge clippers, or getting on with the DIY tasks that have been lingering since the winter months. But what about that persistent elbow pain that stopped you serving last season, stopped you managing your garden the way you wanted to or caused you to delay the DIY in the first place? A condition that causes pain on the outside of the elbow is known as tennis elbow. It can get so bad that even lifting up the kettle or Heath, Iron Frampton Cotterell, Coalpit

turning a tap can be impossible. Despite its name, tennis elbow is not limited to tennis players. It is most commonly an over-use injury, caused by repetitive movements such as using a paintbrush or screwdriver, hammering, typing or using the mouse, using some garden tools or playing tennis! The forearm is made up of many muscles that move your elbow, wrist and fingers. The forearm muscles that bend your wrist back, attach onto the elbow through one single tendon. If these muscles tighten, it puts increased strain on the tendon, causing tiny tears and inflammation to develop

near the bony part of the elbow. This is the start of tennis elbow. Tennis elbow will usually improve itself within 6 months to two years. However, during this time, it can be debilitating and there are a number of things you can do to help speed up recovery: Ice: In acute tennis elbow injuries, applying an ice pack can help to reduce the inflammation. Stretches: Stretching out the forearm muscles can help to reduce the strain on the tendon. Tennis Elbow Strap: These attach around the forearm, absorbing some of the forces exerted onto

the damaged tendon of the elbow. Soft tissue work and mobilization can release the tension in the forearm muscles. Acupuncture and manipulation can also help to reduce the symptoms of tennis elbow. Seek the help of a chiropractor or physiotherapist – don’t stay in pain.

Gatcombe festival set to host stars of the eventing world MANY of the world’s top event riders will be in action at Gatcombe Park for one of the most prestigious horse trials fixtures - with the best known dressage horse also making a guest appearance. British team regulars Pippa Funnell and William Fox-Pitt are among the entries for the Festival of British Eventing, along with their team-mates from the Rio Olympics, Kitty King and Gemma Tattersall. Other Rio stars set to take on the Gatcombe challenge are the British-based New Zealanders Mark Todd and Tim Price, as well as Aussie Christopher Burton. Crowd favourite Mary King will be joined by her daughter Emily on the start list, while Zara Tindall will be competing on home ground aboard BGS Class Affair. South Gloucestershire will be represented throughout the weekend courtesy of Harry Meade, whose yard is in West Littleton and has several rides accepted; Chipping Sodbury’s Nick Gauntlett with Cosmic Order and Alveston’s Simon Vatcher on Camblin Hill. Other leading British riders include Nicola Wilson, Izzy Taylor and Oliver Townend. Meanwhile, recently retired dressage star Valegro is set to draw a big crowd when he parades in the main arena. With his rider Charlotte Dujardin, the horse won a string of Olympic, world and European medals, retaining the individual gold medal won at the London Games when competing at Rio last year. Valegro will be stabled close to the collecting ring after his display on the Sunday of the festival, allowing people to get close to the equine superstar. The festival runs from Friday, August 4, to Sunday, August 6,

Captain Mark Phillips has again designed the cross country courses and this year has added a second water feature at Avening Banks as the next phase of development in an area of the park fast becoming popular with spectators. N unreliable bus service quickly becomes an underused service, and a bus which doesn’t turn up is frustrating at best and devastating if it means missing a hospital appointment or being late to work again.

That was the feedback that I received when I conducted a transport survey across our area, asking residents for their views on the the quality of our transport network. The feedback has helped me make the case to the decision makers about local transport and has been instrumental in helping me secure a South Gloucestershire review of our local bus services. That review is now live, and that’s why I am asking for your help to improve our area once again. The 82 Service to Southmead is vitally important to our community, it is a route which connects our communities to work and leisure facilities at Cribbs Causeway, but also to Southmead Hospital. For our most vulnerable, or least mobile neighbours, it was

extremely disappointing when the 82 route was moved to commence at Yate bus station, dropping out Chipping Sodbury High Street, despite the journey being less than a mile, or 5 minutes by car. Whilst the distance is small, I completely understand it is just not possible for many people to make that extra journey, especially when you need the service to access a Hospital appointment. That’s why, alongside Councillor Rob Creer, we have launched a petition and campaign to get the service back to Chipping Sodbury which we will submit to the bus review. We are calling on the 82 to begin on Sodbury High Street, but are also asking for improvements to the service, to improve its reliability, and to extend its operating hours. You can support

Joyce, it is a flat-bed movement that featured Cambridge quarter chimes and an hourly strike. Sadly, when the bells were rehung in 1963 and the movement converted to electric autowinding, it incorporated parts of the chiming and striking trains and the hammers were not transferred to the new bellframe. The clock therefore now only keeps time, its dial being on the south wall of the tower.

Bus passengers urged to have their say on subsidised services PEOPLE who travel by bus are being asked to get involved in a consultation on subsidised services so council leaders can ensure they are funding the routes that matter. South Gloucestershire Council supports services which are entirely funded by the authority, as well as commercial services that receive top-up payments to extend the route or to run in the evening or on bank holidays. It currently supports 32 bus services at a cost of £1.76 million and wants to know the travelling public’s priorities for public transport as it faces up to continued cuts in the funding it gets from the Government. The council said subsidies for bus services were due to be reviewed, with spending set to be reduced by £250,000 in 2019/20. The consultation runs until September 3 and anyone who wants to have their say should visit www.southglos.gov.uk/ consultation to complete a survey. n LETTERS Appeal to save play equipment Do Frampton residents and children realise that the new, popular roundabout at Beesmoor park is about to be removed for no good reason? It is in perfect working order and the only reason given by Frampton Council and Beesmoor Committèe is that it doesn't "fit in" with the proposed new equipment of 'natural' materials. Nonsense - the new proposals include TWO metal slides and a mostly-metal basket swing - so the small metal disc roundabout is hardly incongruous. Furthermore, Frampton Council have raised 2017 council tax and Beesmoor Committee have requested donations - both to fund new play equipment (a worthy cause if they do not waste the expensive roundabout bought with local public funds, requested by hundreds of local families and chosen by some hundred Frampton children only 3 years ago). Residents can see the proposed plans for Beesmoor park and have

Crossbow Singers THE Crossbow Singers’ Summer Concert was a great success, with lots of complimentary comments from the lovely audience. Thank you for all your support. This year all the proceeds from the ticket sales were split between three local charities. These are the Baby Bank Network (Bristol), Off the Record (Yate), and The Hive Drop-in Service (Kingswood). We are so pleased to report that, with a small ‘top-up’ from choir funds, we were able to donate £300 to each of these charities. There was also a retiring collection to raise funds for the ongoing upkeep of the Beesmoor Road Playing Fields in Frampton Cotterell. As a result of the generosity of our audience, with again a small amount from choir funds, we are donating £110 to

the Beesmoor Road Playing Field Committee. We hope this will help them continue their good work for the community. The choir ‘year’ has now ended and we will not meet again until 11th September, when we will begin preparations for our Christmas concert. This will take place on Monday and Tuesday, 11th and 12th December. Please make a note in your diary and look out for more information nearer the time. We look forward to seeing you there. Charity (GWAAC). At the end of July, I am going to be retiring from the role, and I wanted to take the time to express my gratitude for everyone who has ever supported our cause by holding a fundraising event, volunteering, or making a donation. Our charity relies on donations to continue flying, and your generosity has meant that we can continue to provide a life saving service for the 2.1m people of our region. In the nine years since I helped set up the charity we have achieved a number of key milestones, notably successfully meeting a fundraising target to upgrade our existing helicopter in 2014, and in 2016 we also received planning consent to build a new air base at a site in Almondsbury near Bristol – meaning the charity can continue to save lives and serve the people of our region for many years to come. Since those early days when we really were in a hand to mouth position, the charity has grown and flourished, thanks to the support of some amazing volunteers, our charity team, our trustees, the crew that work at our air base, the NHS clinical team and of course not forgetting all of the individuals who have fundraised for us – I cannot thank you enough as you have all helped us get to where we are today. I know that the people we have saved and their families are also extremely grateful for your support too. I am excited to see what the future holds for GWAAC, and know that I am leaving the charity with a very capable team in charge!

Heating firm raises money for mental health charities

WARMLEY-BASED Gregor Heating, has used Bristol football rivalry to raise £1,500 for charity. The annual Gregor Heating staff match, held at Bitton Football Club, kicked off with the Reds anticipating victory but the Blues swiftly stole the show, smashing the Reds 5 -2. With impressive goals from engineers Leon Fletcher, George Lear, Connor Millward and Tom Hodge, it was a pretty competitive game. The real winner of the match was local partnership initiative, B Strong U Belong. Founded in 2016, in memory of Pete Davies, the initiative raises funds for two local mental health charities ‘Off the Record' and 'Second Step', as well as increasing awareness of mental health issues. The Gregor team raised the money by collection buckets, a raffle and also VIP tickets to watch the match from a prime position with a bottle of bubbly. Gregor Heating’s Finance Director, Andrew Eustace, met the B Strong U Belong team at a

Bristol City match. He said: “We felt so inspired by the story of the B Strong U Belong team. It really

illustrates how anyone can be effected by mental health issues. The whole Gregor team - football

differences aside - know how important it is for us to support this vital, local cause. “

Hot Hignell heats up Castle Coombe YATE Race driver Chris Hignell has enjoyed another successful Saloon Car Championship race at an overcast and chilly Castle Combe. A time of 1m24.3 in his Peugeot 106 Gti was Hignell’s second fastest lap time ever and placed him 33rd on the grid ahead of two of his class protagonists and directly behind his brother Stuart in his more powerful Citroen Saxo.

Changeable conditions in the hours leading up to the race led to anxious sky watching but the race started in the dry. A good start from Hignell kept him ahead of his class competitors for quite some time but eventually he conceded a place. An extremely hard fought battle coupled with improved reliability after the previous race weekend helped Chris bring the car home in a best ever 20th

overall, and 4th in class. The 6 points gained maintains his 4th in class and 11th overall in the championship. The race car will be on display at the South Glos Show on the 5&6 August on the Sodbury Fuels stand. Chris will be in attendance on the Sunday afternoon for race fans to get a close look at the car and for youngsters to sit in the car for photos.

The first team, who play at Winterbourne International Academy, will now play in the Conference North division where they look to add to their record of 18 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss in two consecutive seasons at ‘Fortress Ridings.’ 1st XI Club records broken included: • First team to remain undefeated at home during a season. • Most wins at Home (10) AND Away (6). • Highest goals scored in a season at Home (55) AND Away (49). • Least goals conceded in a season at Home (17). Away (27 – joint record). • Highest goal difference (+60). • Highest total goals scored (104). • Lowest total goals conceded (44) • Most points gained in a season (50).

Records tumble as hockey club secures promotion Local brothers Tom and Harry Bryant cleaned up at the end of season awards night as they were individually awarded with Club Player of the Year & Highest Men’s Goal Scorer (35) and 1st XI Team Player of the Year & U21 Player of the Year trophies; both also receiving outstanding contribution certificates for participating in every game of the season. Fellow ‘Framptonite’ Brian Edwards received the award for Over 50s Player of the Season – also recently playing an integral part in the West O55s squad alongside teammate Mike Wingent in winning the Regional Tournament at UWE. First team Captain, and Coach Tom Bryant Said “It’s very rewarding to know that all the hard work we’ve put in over the season and pre-season has paid off and as a squad we’ve been able to achieve our aim. It feels just great.” The first team’s National Cup run saw them see off North Wilts (4-1) and Bodmin Dragons (3-2), setting up a round 3 match away to Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian’s in South Croydon. After a 1-0 lead, they found themselves 4-1 down, but then battled back to a 4-4 score line. After an extraordinary game, Bristol and West were defeated 5-4 on penalty flicks. The Men’s first team have just finished in fourth place within the Bristol & District Division 1 Summer League – being the lowest ranked club in the top division by 2 winter leagues, the team

caused some serious upsets and impressive performances against Championship and Premiership teams; even beating newly promoted to National League side Clifton Robinson’s 4-1 at Home. Olympic Gold Medalist Sam Quek visits Winterbourne Sam Quek MBE, the England & Great Britain player and gold medalist in Rio has visited the club. Quek, who also appeared 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here,’ She dropped in during a junior training session players were put through their paces by the Olympian and got to see her in action. Sam brought along her gold medal giving players (and

the coaches) the chance to pose alongside her for a Quek-Selfie. Frampton Cotterell’s T20 kids have a tough start IN Frampton Cotterell Under 19’s first season the team were delivered a tough draw, coming up against Knowle CC, Bristol Phoenix West Indies, Downend, Bishopston and Bradley Stoke. ‘The Fram’ came up against Knowle in their first game and with a strong team won the toss and elected to bowl first. Wickets were shared amongst the bowlers, with Tom Howell the stand out performer taking 3-19 from his four overs. Knowle set a target of a run a ball 120 and the Frampton team were quietly confident of chasing it down on a difficult pitch. Knowle struck early removing opener Tom England for a duck, a quick fire 18 from the other opener Ben Makepeace set the ball rolling and along with 27 from Reece Bevan, both on debut, the Fram were well set. After a flurry of wickets and some very tight bowling Knowle prevailed by 14 runs in a very close game.

Next up was the visit of Bristol Phoenix West Indies to the Fram. The lads knew from previous experience that they had some big hitters and would be a tough challenge. Captain Ollie Morris won the toss and elected to bowl, much to the

surprise of the West Indies fan base. With their two power hitters opening the batting the team were worried after Liam Blake dropped a catch, but he bounced back and ended up taking 3 catches in the innings, and both

openers were soon sent back to the hutch for 19 runs a piece. Despite good line and length bowling the Windies attacked well and a well-timed 47 and a blasted 50* (retired) from their numbers 3 and 5 left Fram chasing a total of 161 to win, some fielding madness at the end of their innings not helping matters. Openers Ollie Morris and Ben Makepeace set about their goal with gusto. Makepeace scoring a man of the match 50* (retired) combining both technique and power, with the highlight being a glorious cover drive 6. The Windies bowling combined raw pace and skilful spin of a U-19 Bermudan international. Rory McIlrath batted diligently down the order, but with the run rate increasing the target disappeared over the horizon, with Frampton coming up short by 34 runs.
