Outcry over proposed Coalpit Heath development RESIDENTS living in Coalpit Heath are mounting a campaign to stop development of houses and flats on a plot that currently has just one bungalow. Developers have submitted plans for 6 three storey homes and 2 flats at number 6 Bell Road, just off the Badminton Road. Protesters say the development is too close to the Grade II* listed St Saviour’s church, will create parking problems, and claim the plans mean the overdevelopment of the site. Bell Road currently consists of bungalows and two storey homes. The planning consultancy, BRH Planning Consultants, has responded to Frome Valley Voice, saying that “virtually any” application, “particularly in South Gloucestershire” is objected to by residents, but would be approved were it in happening in Bristol. Bruce Hosie, from BRH said: “You have to feel for the planners, people want everything to stay the same, when of course this can never be. The site will be developed, it’s only in which way that has to be decided.” Full story, page 3

E-fit issued in appeal It’s a musical month over distraction burglary at the Medieval Barn in Frampton Cotterell POLICE investigating a distraction burglary in Frampton Cotterell have issued an e-fit in a renewed appeal for information. The incident happened at about 3pm on Wednesday 13 June in Court Road and was reported later that evening. A man claiming to be carrying out a survey for the ‘gas board’ called at the home of an 87-year-old man. He later found that his home had been searched, but nothing is believed to have been stolen. The caller was described as a white man, of medium build, with dark hair and a strong Northern accent, wearing a dark jacket, a high-vis vest and a yellow lanyard. Officers have offered home security advice and carried out house-to-house enquiries. Local Neighbourhood Watch members have been alerted to the crime.
TWO musical events dominate the calendar at the Winterbourne Medieval Barn this month. The historic building is hosting Verdi's “Falstaff” on Sunday 8 July at 6.00pm. Tessitoura Opera Group present Verdi's tuneful comedy opera in the unusual and intimate setting of the barn. That’s followed by the West Gallery Music workshop on Saturday 21 July. Usually led by a village choir
and band, West Gallery music was popular in churches in the 18th -19th centuries. The Victorians banned it for being too much fun. The music is sung in four parts, and is accessible to everyone whatever your voice range. The workshop will be led by members of Bristol Harmony West Gallery Quire. More information about the Barn is on their website www. winterbournebarn.org.uk

Residents angry over plans for more homes off Badminton Road
PEOPLE living in Coalpit Heath say they’re angry about a proposed development of 6 three storey homes and 2 flats in Bell Road. The current bungalow at number 6 would be demolished to make way. Bell Road currently has two-storey houses and bungalows, and is near to the Grade II* listed St Saviour’s Church. Susanna Powell who has lived on the Badminton Road for 30 years, has described it as a ‘typical garden grab’. She said: “The buildings are too high, overpowering and architecturally not in keeping with any other houses and bungalows in this locality. This is the centre of Coalpit Heath village opposite and in very close proximity to our two star listed church, including the surrounding two star listed church wall on a quiet, narrow, one way road.” Bruce Hosie, from BRH Planning Consultants, the company behind the plans, said: “If you stand on Badminton Road in front of the church it is very difficult to see the site at all due to the trees. How can there be any parking or traffic issues? The site is on a one-way full width road where all traffic leaving the site has to turn right away from Badminton road, and into the centre of the village with its many access points, and the site has 16 parking spaces on site, plus ample on street parking, due to the road being one way.” The site is just within Frampton Cotterell parish council on the boundary of the Westerleigh Parish Council area. Westerleigh Parish Council has objected on
grounds of overdevelopment, lack of gardens and impractical parking, as well as potential increased traffic, and the three storey modern homes being out of character with the nearby church. South Gloucestershire Council’s Conservation Officer has also objected because of the proximity of the development to the church. In his formal report to planners, Ian Gething said: “It will, without doubt, compete visually with the grade II* listed St Saviours Church as a result of its excessive scale,
height and massing and it will be an imposing and discordant addition to the setting of the church which is characterised by modest, two-storey detached and semi-detached dwellings in relatively spacious plots.”
A similar application to demolish a nearby property at 190 Badminton Road and build three detached three storey town houses was previously rejected due to overdevelopment.

Change coming to historic house ACTON Court in Iron Acton is to undergo major changes that will see its summer opening season take on a different format next year. Built in nine months for a weekend visit by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn during their summer tour of the West Country in 1535, the house and grounds have been open to the public for 20 years but this year is the last of its formal summer season. Lisa Kopper, Artist in Residence at Acton Court told the Voice: “At this stage there are a number of structural repairs that need to happen and the walls have suffered greatly over the past few years due to the unusual weather patterns. We need to schedule vital repairs and are planning to announce future plans at the end of the year.” “We would like to open the gardens in June as during the years of summer tours, the public has rarely been able to see the beautiful Acton Court roses.”
Over the years Acton Court has become known for its high quality events and especially the renaissance music performed in King Henry VIII’s rooms of state. This summer is no exception and tickets for two concerts, Music for the Two Mary’s on the 29 July and Glorianna on the 12th August are still available. The grounds have been cultivated as a small wild life reserve with Hawk and Owl Trust volunteers working to maintain the natural habitat and fauna. Wildlife broadcaster Chris Sperring MBE will be taking evening wildlife walks on the 12, 18 and 20 July. Tours conducted by Blue Badge Guides also feature and take in both house and grounds which includes the stunning wild meadows and Tudor style organic kitchen garden. More information can be found at: www.actoncourt.com
Volunteers needed to make cards for charity VOLUNTEERS are being sought in the Frome Valley area to set up a card making group for the Bristol charity Goodwill Children’s Homes. The cards are sold to raise funds to help educate orphaned and destitute children in Southern India. Between 6 and 10 people are needed, and the group would meet once a week. Companies are being asked to donate materials and glue. Training and mentoring is provided to get the group started. The charity’s administrator, Theresa van der Merwe, said: “This is an opportunity for you to meet local like-minded people for a chat, coffee and card making, it’s great fun and you will be so pleased with what you will achieve. You don't need to be experienced, just have the want to create.” Contact Theresa on 0117 3250 550 to find out more.

Parish council warns of demolition danger as historic building goes up for auction money raised from the sale of the school grounds and buildings has to go back into providing education in the parish. Council clerk Naomi Bibi told Frome Valley Voice: “The school is an important landmark in the village and has provided education to the children of Frampton Cotterell since 1846. Whilst South Gloucestershire Council may be permitted to sell the land and buildings on it, there are restrictions stipulated in the terms of the 1846 trust.” “Importantly, any proceeds from the sale of the school site must be applied to deliver the terms of the original trust. In other words, every penny that South Gloucestershire Council stands to make from selling Lot 2, must be re-invested in a new school within the Parish boundaries to continue providing education for the children of Frampton, and absolutely cannot be used for any purposes other than this.” The parish council is urging local people to comment on plans for the site on the South Glos Council planning website (reference number PT18/0930/R3O), as well as
contacting Historic England via their website southwest@HistoricEngland.org.uk Ms Bibi said: “The Parish Council wants to reiterate how important it is that both the original school building (along with its surrounding stone walls) is protected, and that also all proceeds from the sale of the old school must go directly back into providing a place of education for children of the village. Public comment is important, and now is the time to really make your voices heard.”

FRAMPTON Cotterell Parish Council has urged local people to make their views known as the old Brockeridge School on Woodend Road is sold by South Gloucestershire Council. The original 1846 building is part of the current Watermore School. The school is to be located on one site, with the infant school being sold off. There are three lots for auction by sealed bids, due as Frome Valley Voice went to press. The first lot is the general school grounds and the modern buildings on the infant school site. The second lot is the Victorian building on the same site, with a third lot being auctioned on the junior school site for housing. The council’s auction papers say the Brockeridge School building ‘should be retained’, but conservation officers at the council have warned this doesn’t afford the building complete protection if developers want to demolish it. Frampton Cotterell Parish Council has put in a bid to Historic England in an attempt to have the building nationally listed. They hope this will help protect the building. The parish council also says that any

Festival organisers hope to keep July date as they gear up for this year’s event THE organisers of the Frampton Festival say they hope to keep running the event in July, despite suggestions from Frampton Cotterell Parish Council that it should move to September. Festival organiser Ian Haddrell said: “The council have
concerns about the decrease in biodiversity in Centenary Field, and their proposal is not to cut the meadow grass in July prior to the festival, which would have an impact on the area that the festival could utilise. However, the venue and date is secured for this year and 2019. We are hopeful that the festival will remain in its current location and on its established date.” This year’s event promises to be a well attended event with the festival now in its sixth year. The Festival committee have been working since November to organise the event, with Professor Panic’s Circus, Rogers’ fairground rides, Frampton Cotterell Air Training Corp’s flight simulator, and steam engine rides just some of the attractions on offer. Live music in the evening
includes Jodie Mellor, Trip for Biscuits, Underground Frets, and Jazz Band, the winners of a recent Winterbourne Academy talent show competition. Headlining the festival this year will be Bristol band The 19 Sixties.
The free festival takes place on Saturday 14 July in Centenary Field, Mill Lane, Frampton Cotterell, starting at 2pm and finishing at 10pm with the lighting of the parish beacon followed by a firework display.

More prison officers in Eastwood Park to tackle increase in assault and self-harm Joseph Hook, data reporter THE number of prison officers in Eastwood Park Prison has increased over the last year, as the establishment tackles rising levels of assault and self-harm. But unions have warned of high turnover rates among prison staff, with inexperienced officers facing more violence and drug use among prisoners. Newly-released figures from the Ministry of Justice show that there were 14 more officers in Eastwood Park Prison in March this year than a year previously an increase of 8%. The government has hired more than 3,000 prison officers since 2016, following a six-year period during which the prison service lost nearly a third of its workforce. This means there are now 191 prison officers working in
Eastwood Park Prison. Figures released last month showed that there were 194 assaults in Eastwood Park last year, more than seven times the level in 2012. Of those assaults, 73 were on staff. Cases of self-harm had also more than doubled over five years. The prison was also found to be overcrowded, with 382 prisoners placed into cells
designed for just 369. Glyn Travis, the assistant general secretary of the Prison Officers' Association, said the high turnover of staff in prisons was a cause for concern. He said: "The biggest problem that we see now is that a lot of establishments have more than 50% of staff who have less than two years' service in prisons.
"The attrition rate, for people who leave the service in the first 12 months, is about 16% - that's a massive increase since 2010, when it was around 2%. "In prisons, there are serious acts of violence every day on staff and on other prisoners. The NHS have said that they have concerns for nurses in prisons being in contact with fumes from drugs - prison officers are in this environment every day." The justice secretary, David Gauke, said that 3,111 prison officers were recruited between October 2016 and March 2018, surpassing a government pledge to recruit 2,500 prison officers by the end of this year. He said: "Let me be clear the recruitment drive continues and will continue until we reach required levels across the prison estate, with the same urgency that has secured this remarkable influx of new staff."

All aboard as cricket club celebrates special anniversary OLD Down cricket club are celebrating their 175th birthday with a series of special events that include a dinner on board the SS Great Britain. What is thought to be the oldest club in the Bristol area was established very close to July 19, 1843 when Brunel’s iconic steamship was launched. The world is a very different place these days but the first Old Down cricketers would still recognise the club’s undulating outfield and stunning views over the Severn Estuary to the Welsh hills. Andy Rowen is in his third year as chairman, following in the footsteps of his father Roger who is now president, while 14-year-old son George is starting to make an impression at a club dominated by family groups sharing a love of cricket. Andy said: “Even on a cold night it’s good to come up and enjoy what we have here. We’re a village cricket club with no pretences … we play for fun and we try to win. But we try to do it properly, shaking hands after and then having a beer.” Old Down put out two senior Saturday sides in the Bristol & District League as well as under-11, under-13 and under-15 youth teams along with running Chance to Shine for under-9s and the new All-Star scheme which is aimed at youngsters aged five to eight. Andy added: “It’s wonderful to be here on a Friday and see kids absolutely everywhere. The anniversary will include a family day in June because we want

wouldn’t that be fantastic?” Old Down, who have a special match against the MCC on August 5, are not quite as old as Lansdown who, batting for Bath, trace their origins back to 1825 but edge ahead of Congresbury (1844) and Frenchay (1846). The Great Britain dinner is set for July 6 when the world’s first steamship will remember its
important role in cricket history as the vessel which, in 1861, departed Liverpool carrying the first ‘All England’ cricket team to Australia. The 12-match tour by ‘The Trailblazers’ was such a success that it paved the way for The Ashes series which are such a beloved part of today’s cricket calendar.

Minor Injuries Unit employs extra triage nurse to cope with demand DEMAND for services at the minor injuries unit in Yate increased by over 20 per cent during April and May this year compared to last year, triggering an increase in staff. Sirona Care and Health which runs the unit has now funded an additional nurse to help with the increase in demand. Carrie Wedgwood, Head of Adult and Specialist Services for Sirona, said: “We aim to always have a triage nurse on duty when we are open and Sirona has funded an additional Emergency Care Practitioner on Mondays (or the day after bank holidays) which are traditionally very busy.” “We know and share the view of local people that Yate MIU is a highly valued service and we are committed to ensuring it continues to thrive, complementing the range of
services provided by General Practices, local Pharmacists and hospital emergency departments. We aim to always have a triage nurse on duty when we are open. We have full details on what we can and cannot treat on display at the unit and on our website www. sirona-cic.org.uk.” South Gloucestershire Lib Dem Group Leader, Claire Young, said: “I hope this new initiative will improve things for staff and patients as they are in desperate need of extra resources.” Local Lib Dem Heath spokesperson Councillor Sue Hope said: “We will continue to lobby for extra resources for Yate, as the service there is so popular. We need even more services to be provided out of Yate now people know the facilities are there.”

Yate breastfeeding support project wins Queen’s award Up to 40 volunteers who support breastfeeding Mums are to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade which can be given to volunteer groups in the UK. The Barnardo’s Breastfeeding Peer Support Project provides emotional and practical support to new mothers. Weekly groups are held at venues in Thornbury, Yate and across South Gloucestershire. The Yate group, called Yate Great Friends, meets at Yate Childrens Centre on Cranleigh Court Road on Thursdays between 11.30am 1.00pm. Since it was commissioned in 2011, it’s helped over one thousand women, and more than 400 families use it every year. The trained volunteers act as ‘peer supporters’, to help mothers for as long as is needed. They work with women giving any amount of breast milk, via any method. Barnardo’s breastfeeding counsellor Ann Watts said: “We are delighted our selfless volunteers have received royal recognition for their amazing achievements. Their enthusiasm and commitment are outstanding. They are all mums with their own young families but they all wanted to ‘give something back’ to their local community. They provide a warm, welcoming and encouraging environment, which is so vitally important for new mothers but especially

The support from the group made all the difference.” Cllr Erica Williams, Cabinet member for public health at South Gloucestershire Council, said; “I was thrilled to learn that
the volunteers who help run this council-commissioned service have won such a prestigious Queen’s Award. Different levels of support are available to mothers who use this service, including access to advice from a breastfeeding counsellor, and the seven community-based breastfeeding groups – run by the volunteers – where mothers can go to get ongoing peer

SOUTH Gloucestershire Council says recycling has increased and landfill is down a year after it introduced weekly collections and smaller black bins. Since weekly recycling collections began in June 2017, an extra 3,644 tonnes of recyclables have been collected, a 14 per cent increase. Since the smaller black wheelie bins were rolled out over 12 weeks from January 2018, and has resulted in 3,350 tonnes less waste being thrown away, a 16 per cent reduction. A council spokesman said: “While some experienced some inevitable teething issues with changes to the service, the overwhelming majority are now sorting their recyclables effectively and with a renewed focus on recycling more, putting less in their smaller black bins.” “We found that 52 per cent of the average households black bin rubbish could actually be recycled from home. Putting recycling in the black bin increases costs, affects our recycling rates, and wastes valuable resources.” Councillor Paul Hughes, Cabinet Member for Communities and Tourism, said: “I want to thank residents and our staff who have contributed to the success of our new approach so far.” “Our waste collection services are among the most visible that the council provides; it is one of those things that we do that everyone takes part in. We have learned a few lessons along the way, but public engagement has been constructive and the way the community has played its part has helped to ensure and we thecan ballall at share Wembley theLiam success in now.”

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
Stories in the Jungle
Heidi Carlin Children & Youth Worker Zion United Church
I LOVE a good story, especially children’s books that don’t take too long to read and often the story being told is teaching a fact or a life skill. Some of the books that come to mind are the “Hungry caterpillar” which explains the life cycle of a caterpillar in a very memorable way and “The Rainbow Fish” which could be used to teach about sharing and/or pride. For many of us we will remember a fact or a life skill much better when it is related to a story because the story captures our attention and often encourages the creativity within us. Some of us will associate ourselves with one particular character in the story and that may give us encouragement or perhaps a challenge. Jesus loved to tell stories and
we can read many of them in the Bible. The stories he told were called parables. A story with a meaning. Jesus used stories that the people listening could relate to, stories using situations that were happening in their everyday lives. Sometimes Jesus would relate the story to a spiritual truth and other times he would leave the crowds to work out for themselves what that story might mean to them. One of the things I love to do with the stories that Jesus told is to read them and look at them with other people because the thoughts I have from reading the story are often completely different from the thoughts someone else has so we can learn from one another. I particularly love to look at these parables with children because their insights and thoughts
are so inspiring and fresh, and the children always teach me something new. I am particularly excited about the “Jungle Jamboree Holiday Club” this year as we look at the wonderful stories Jesus told and consider one another’s thoughts. Jesus often told his stories on a beach, but we are looking forward to telling stories in nowhere other than the jungle! So why not read some of the stories Jesus told and see what you think. Children who have been in Primary School this last year or longer are welcome to join us at the “Jungle Jamboree Holiday Club” and explore the stories there through fun, games, crafts, songs and friendships. Cotswold voluntary wardens given Queen’s Award A TEAM of voluntary wardens who support the work of the Cotswolds Conservation Board have been given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade given to volunteer groups in the UK.
The Queen’s Award recognises outstanding work done by the volunteers in their own communities. Head Warden, John Shaw, and Volunteering Coordinator, Rebecca Jones, both attended the Queen’s Garden Party to celebrate all 2018 award winners. Local projects have included the unveiling of a new information board in the garden of The Dog, Old Sodbury, where three trails The service is celebrating its 50th year in 2018 meet; the Jubilee
Way to Severn, the Frome Valley Way to Bristol and the Cotswold Way. There’s also been scrub clearance at Old Sodbury Hill Fort. Working parties are often seen working in the area repairing and restoring dry stonewalls, maintaining the labyrinth of paths and by-ways, coppicing woodland and planting trees. Wardens also lead regular guided walks, and ‘Tuesday Tramps’. Martin Lane, Director of the Cotswolds Conservation Board, said: “The Cotswolds Voluntary Wardens put in over 48,000 hours of work this year, across a diverse range of projects – so this award and the garden party
were a wonderful recognition of their dedication to this beautiful region. We look forward to seeing what they achieve over the next 12 months!” 2018 is the 50th anniversary of the Volunteer Wardens in the Cotswolds AONB. John Shaw, Head Warden, said: “This award recognises fifty years of commitment and achievement in making the Cotswolds a great place to be, thanks to the passion, creativity and drive of our voluntary wardens. For half this time we have truly appreciated the tireless guidance, support & encouragement of our Coordinator Becky Jones.”

Man who fled the UK appears in court over serious assault in Yate A MAN who fled to Poland after being convicted of a serious assault will now serve his time after being arrested. Daniel Pisarski, 23, and his brother Adam Pisarski, 24, approached a family on New Year’s Day 2016 when they were walking down Scott Way. It was about 2.30am and they were going home after a party. They launched an unprovoked assault in front of the group which included children. A 40-year-old man and a 37-year-old man suffered serious injuries and needed hospital treatment. A 40-year-old woman was knocked unconscious to the ground. The two men fled to Poland but were tried and convicted in their absence. Daniel Pisarski was charged with one count of GBH and one count of ABH. He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. Adam Pisarski was jailed for four years and six months, including a month for an additional count of battery. In May, Daniel Pisarski was arrested by Polish authorities and in June he was extradited to the UK. On Friday 15 June he appeared at Bristol Crown Court to have
his sentenced confirmed by the judge. He was jailed for an additional six weeks for failing to attend the court. Detective Constable Mark Wilkes said: “This was a vicious unprovoked assault on a family as they walked home from a New Year’s party.” “There were eight children present during the assault, ranging in age from four months old to 14 years old. This was an extremely distressing incident for them to witness.” “Daniel Pisarski thought he could evade justice by fleeing the country. But this shows we will pursue wanted criminals even beyond our own borders and should act as a warning to others who may think they can escape the law.”

Council acts to protect cyclists after accidents on Badminton Road turning right out of Church Road onto the A432 colliding with a cyclist. 3 out of the 4 injury accidents occurred in daylight conditions. Now the council is to paint a 2 metre wide bright green strip with cycle symbols for over 36 metres on the Yate bound side of the road next to Church Road in an effort to cut down the number of accidents. The work is due to take place at some stage in the next few months.

n COMMUNITY NEWS Floral Friends Waitrose Donation Floral Friends were delighted to be presented with a donation of £165 from Waitrose as part of their Community Matters green token scheme. This is much appreciated and will be put towards costs of establishing and maintaining wildflower areas within the village. Summer Displays Floral Friends have been busy
emptying and refilling the planters and gateways around the village then replanting them all with beautiful summer displays. The colour theme this year is gold to reflect our SW in Bloom gold pennant award for last year's displays. If anyone could help us to look after a planter please get in touch. We are short of volunteers this year and would really appreciate help deadheading and watering to keep the displays looking beautiful.

n COMMUNITY NEWS Frampton Court Corner Our It’s Your Neighbourhood group has successfully transformed this neglected roadside corner with wild flowers and foxgloves. The poppies are looking lovely right now and hopefully more flowers will follow later in the season. Floral Boots Have an old pair of boots that you no longer need? Why not recycle them into planters and take part in Floral Friends’ Floral Boots display? We’re inviting everyone (all residents, businesses, associations, community groups and schools within Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath) to plant up a boot, or a pair of boots (normal size please – no giant ones permitted), with the colour theme of red, white and blue to help commemorate the centenary of the First
World War Armistice and the 100th anniversary of the RAF. Individual residents may enter a single or pair of boots/shoes. Groups may enter a group or line of boots/shoes. Applications will need to be completed by 6th July and the boots displayed where passersby can enjoy them. We will produce a map of where the boots are located so that people may walk around the village to see them all and vote for their favourite (there will be two categories – individual and group). Voting will take place from Saturday 21 July until Saturday 28 July and winners announced on 28July. We Need Help Do you live near one of our planters? Could you spare some time to help us by regularly watering a planter and removing dead flowers? If you could help, we would love to hear from you - you don't have to be a gardening expert,
just happy to lend a hand and help us to make our village beautiful. Please email us at floralfriendsofframpton@gmail.com Remember – all our latest news in available at http://ffframpton.wixsite.com/framptoncotterell
Around The W.I OUR latest meeting was well attended and was chaired by Carol Shields in place of our President, Emilie Smith, who is currently spending her holidays walking the Pennine Way with her husband. We are looking forward to hearing all about it on her return. Our speaker for the evening was Sandy Osborne, a serving police officer of 29 years who is now a Detective Inspector. Sandy is also a keen runner and has completed half marathons for St Peters Hospice in memory of a police officer in her force who died of cancer. Sandy told us all about her long and arduous journey which led to her writing the first two books in a series entitled “Girl Cop” which are very loosely based on her experiences both as a probationer and then later in her police career. After tentatively embarking on writing her first novel she quickly realised that it’s not enough to just write a story and then get it published. A great deal of research is involved to ensure that the plot is feasible, practical and that all details, such as dates and places, are correct. Once the first draft is finished then a publisher must be found. This is an exhausting process involving contacting publishers with a synopsis and the first three chapters of your book which must be presented in a precise format or it just ends up in the bin. Many rejections and very little helpful feedback usually follows, so making many budding authors give up the idea completely. Sandy, however, persevered
and decided to take the risky and expensive course of self publishing, eventually finding a small company to advise her on such matters as designing the book covers. This is very important as many people decide whether to buy a book by seeing a cover which appeals to them. This was followed by a lot of self marketing and finally a January launch at Waterstones in Bath. Some 100 of her books were sold on that evening and rewarding sales of both that book and the second one have continued since. Sandy was a very entertaining speaker and also read excerpts from her books. After the meeting was closed some of our members bought the books which Sandy signed for them. If you would like to come along as a visitor we meet on the second Thursday of the month at the St Michaels Rooms in Winterbourne High Street at 7.30pm. For more information please telephone 01454 778411.

Frampton Cotterell Guides THE 1st Frampton Cotterell Guides enjoyed their first ever canoe camp on the Thames. They paddled 7km each day in tandem canoes laden with their kit and camped overnight on a lock island in the middle of the Thames. The Guides had all attended a practice day at Bristol harbour, but the canoeing skills the trip also required team work and stamina.
All Guides worked well together and their canoeing skills go better and better over the course of the two days. They managed to cover the distance with the heavily laden boats easily and in good spirits, helped by fantastic hot weather that made it a joy to be on the water. It was a great experience. Next year another trip is planned on a different part of the Thames.

n STROUD AUCTION ROOMS
Gibson Les Paul electric guitar. £2300
FOR the first sale in the new, more spacious premises saw people turn out in force Day One of the three-day June auction was Alexandra Bowkett's specialist jewellery section. Highlight of the day - and of the whole auction - was a Victorian brooch set with a cushion cut natural, untreated purple sapphire, which sold for £16,000. Most of the top selling lots were to be found in the jewellery section, including a pair of platinum and diamond earrings selling for £9,500; an Art Deco platinum ring set with a cushion cut diamond (£4,200) and a late Victorian stick pin set with a round cut diamond within a border of further diamonds and surmounted by an old pear cut diamond (£3,100). There were a lot of private buyers to challenge the dealers and at least one happy couple managed to buy the engagement ring they had set their hearts on. Victorian, Georgian, Art Deco and Edwardian jewellery is very sought-after at the moment, as are modern and retro pieces by good
designers. Valuation days are on Fridays 9am-5pm and Saturdays 9am-12.30pm. Top lot of the 400-plus vinyl records was The Beatles' "Please Please Me" stereo album with black and gold label and Dick James credits, which went under the hammer for £4,600. The success of the vinyl specialist section is very much down to the encyclopaedic knowledge of Stroud Auctions’ expert valuer Steve Parker. Other high-selling pieces in this very successful auction included a Gibson Les Paul 25/50 anniversary electric guitar in original hard case; by repute this guitar featured centrefold in c1980 Guitarist Magazine and was owned at one
time by magazine writers Tony Beacon and Paul Day (£2,300); an Omega Speedmaster Professional gentleman's chronograph wristwatch (£2,300); and a Thomas Webb & Sons cameo glass scent bottle with silver top hallmarked for London 1883 (£1,900). A number of coins also sold well, including two cased proof gold sovereign four coin collections for 1998 and 1997, which each made £1,700. Stroud Auction Rooms' next sale will be on July 11 and 12, when the spotlight will be on books, ephemera, stamps, pictures, textiles, scientific instruments, weights and scale, cameras and 20th century design.

n RECIPE
Cooking for sunny days
O
NCE the summer weather arrives my thoughts turn to light, easy to prepare, seasonal dishes. I’m a great fan of fish, which I find ticks all these boxes. So, this month my recipe is for delicious fritters, which go particularly well with fish for a light summery meal. All you need now are some green beans, mange tout or fresh peas to make this perfect summer meal. I’m suggesting you cook some fish like whole sea bass to go with the fritters. Why not make life easy and get the supermarket staff to put each fish in its own paper bag to cook in the oven. It’s like doing it “en papillotte”(in a paper or foil parcel) as the French would say, but without the fuss, and no fishy smells in the house. I’ve just got back from a stunning cruise off the Norwegian fjords where I ate of fish and indeed these little fritters which I’ve now made at home. Sometimes I find it’s the accompaniments that go with the main star on the plate that can steal the show. See what you think.
Courgette and Potato Fritters These fritters look very pretty and are full of vitamins. They are especially tasty served with fish. Makes about 18, serve 3 for each person Ingredients: For the fritters • Courgettes- 200g (8 • Waxy potatoes like Maris Piper150g (5 oz)5oz) • Porridge oats – 50g (2 oz), or brown bread crumbs if you prefer • Sesame seeds – 2 tbsps • Freshly grated nutmeg – ½ tsp • Large eggs -2, lightly be • Butter15g, Veg oil for shallow frying, 1 tbsp For the cream to accompany the fritters Crème fraiche – 3 tbsps Natural Greek Yogurt – 4 tbsps Fresh chives, dill, flat leaf parsley – 2 tbsps each, finely chopped Capers – 1tbsp, finely chopped Lemon zest – ½ tsp
Here’s what you do: 1. F irst make the cream. Simply mix all the cream ingredients together. Cover with cling film and refrigerate ‘til required. 2. C oarsely grate the courgettes and potatoes. Place in a clean cloth and squeeze out excess moisture. 3. Mix the veg inn a large bowl with all the other fritter ingredients EXCEPT the butter and oil. If frying straight away, season with salt and pepper. If cooking later, leave out the salt ‘til just before using as the salt will bring out the moisture in the veg and make the batter too wet. 4. P reheat a large pan. Add the oil and butter. 5. P lace spoonfuls of the mixture in the pan and cook for 3 mins on each side or until crisp and golden brown. Blot on kitchen paper. 6. P ut cooked fritters in a warmed oven to keep hot until all the mixture is used. 7. P lace 3 fritters on each plate and top with the cream. Serve at once. Cook’s tips These can be cooked and frozen. They can also be refrigerated. If frozen, leave to defrost in the bottom of the fridge and then place in a warm oven (180C, Gas 4) for 10-15 mins. If refrigerated, warm through too. The fritters should be piping hot.

Frome Valley Voice turns 5 FROME Valley Voice is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month. The paper first appeared in July 2013 with the now familiar mix of news, sport and features. Over the years the paper has grown in size as it follows its brief of pursuing hyperlocal news, provided by trained journalists. Publisher Richard Drew said: “We’re delighted to have reached this milestone. Our aim is to bring people the news from Winterbourne, Frampton Cotterell, Coalpit Heath, Iron Acton and Winterbourne Down each month, and we hope to be doing it for some years to come”.
Children’s author comes to Frampton Cotterell as part of literary festival AF Harrold has entertained children at Frampton Cotterell CofE School as part of the first Cotswold Edge Literary Festival. The children’s writer has penned the popular Fizzleburt Stump series of books and is now writing the Greta Zargo series. He entertained the children with reading from his latest book and with poems. The visit was part of the week long Cotswold Edge Literary Festival. Authors included Sathnam Sanghera, whose memoir The Boy with the Top Knot was made into a film last year, and Will Self, who appeared at the Bristol and Bath Science Park.

n MOTORING
A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke
Second hand Style A look at everyday cars on the cusp of becoming modern classics Audi A5 coupe 3.2 2007 - 2011: The head says ‘yes, stop fussing’ I wrestle with my opinion of Audis: On the one hand they are a paragon of German efficiency, deeply desirable, of high quality, performance orientated and with an enviable rallying and racing pedigree. Vorsprung durch technik and so on. On the other I can’t shake off the impression that they are over-priced products of the deeply troubled VW Group, the goto motor for aggressive tailgaters who will cut you up as soon as glare at you. A selection of Audi drivers, maybe those who drive rather than own their car, could benefit from some road manners. I unconsciously lump them in with BMW drivers, which is maybe unfair on both counts but I do it regardless. In the meantime, Audi
plough on as masters of brand management, and their halo ‘S’ and ‘RS’ models help to sell millions of dreary low spec lease hire motorway mile munchers. Sitting somewhere in the middle are the larger petrol-engined Audis, unfairly overlooked in the UK. This month’s A5 coupe, in ‘S-Line’ spec and fitted with the 3.2 V6, might just be one of the sweet spots in Audi’s colossal range. Is it enough to make my mind up? The A5 coupe, launched in 2007, is still a great looking car – no arguments. It doesn’t have the flair of last month’s Brera, but what does outside of Italy? It does have proper back seats and a big boot though, and what’s more the engine is a total corker. The V6 is naturally aspirated, that is to say it doesn’t have a turbocharger or a supercharger (the latter of which is used in the more powerful S5). What is does have is 260bhp, although I reckon there’s much more under the bonnet than

Audi are letting on – it feels a bit quicker than the Brera, even with an automatic gearbox. And that gearbox comes with flappy paddles and the ability to lock it into top on the motorway rather than forever kicking down when you want to press on. On test the V6 returned 26mpg, which isn’t great but it is far better than the Brera (try 22mpg for size…). I suspect the manual gearbox option, which is as rare as hen’s teeth, might see you crack 30mpg if you try hard. So, given that they are similar in price, power, performance and so forth am I suggesting you buy an A5 over a Brera? At the top and bottom of the A5 range, probably yes. There is no Brera comparison to the mighty A5 ‘S’ and ‘RS’ models, but you pay handsomely for the privilege. The 2.0 petrol A5, of which there are plenty around on the used market, has more than enough turbo-charged punch vs. lowlier Breras. You’ll also find it in
Golf GTis and a myriad of other VW Group cars. Head to head, the Audi and Brera 3.2 coupes are a much closer call, but the Audi edges it for speed and handling. From behind the wheel I’d have the Audi. From the pavement, well, that’s a more subjective call to make. Your wallet would thank you for choosing an A5 coupe as well – it saves you more than £200 in road tax each year over the Brera. It is also likely to be more reliable (maybe not such a surprise). Audis aren’t infallible though, and you should make sure that the service history is comprehensive and ideally full of main dealer stamps, even at this age. There is no doubt that the A5 coupe makes a beguiling proposition, especially with a V6 under the bonnet. I’d maybe hold out for a manual gearbox, or raid the piggy bank and stretch to the S5. And still I wrestle, probably unnecessarily, with the brand. Is it a bit ‘me too’, a bit unadventurous I ask myself? And then the answer comes ‘No, they’re just really, really good cars and therefore people buy lots of them. Stop being such a pseud’. Audi A5 coupe 3.2, what to pay: £7k to £10k with less than 80k miles Next month: Mokka Chokka Chino

Prioritising road safety in our community Luke Hall MP writes for Frome Valley Voice
As the days get longer and with more people getting out and about in our community across South Gloucestershire, I am delighted that we will soon see some key improvements to our local road infrastructure and some important measures to reduce speeding and make our roads safer for all. Thanks to the community’s support and following Government road maintenance funding of over £500,000, we have been able to press the Council to use some of that funding towards repairs to potholes and roads which residents believed required immediate attention. Local villages are now set to see vital road maintenance work and much-needed road improvements on some key roads in South Gloucestershire, with
resurfacing works to Badminton Road already underway. For local families and residents living in Broad Lane, we have received assurances from the Police and Council that they will be monitoring volumes and speeds of vehicles in the neighbourhood to ensure the speed limit is adhered to and properly enforced. I will be continuing to work alongside the Codrington Arms and North Road Primary School to further enhance our road safety along the whole of North Road. Together we are making a real difference towards reducing road accidents, especially near our schools, whilst maintaining efficient and appropriate roads and networks for local families and commuters.
I fully share the community’s concerns about the need to deal with speeding and understand how important it is to ensure our roads are properly maintained and the damage and risk to cars, road users and pedestrians is reduced. I am therefore delighted and honoured to receive an award from Brake, the road safety charity, as a testament to all the work we as a community have been doing to tackle speeding and improve the condition of our roads, particularly in our most rural areas. If you have any concerns about road safety or potholes in your area, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me at luke.hall.mp@ parliament.uk

Holiday count down guide
Over 50’s Forum celebrates 25 years
By Sarah Young of Spoilt Hair & Beauty
IT’S not long now to the summer holidays; are you one of those rare women, who are just perfectly groomed all year round? If you are not, here is our guide for getting holiday ready. 2 weeks before - sort out your feet. We are on our feet most of the day, but we neglect them for most of the year. At least twice a year treat yourself to a salon pedicure. Using the correct products in the right way can really make a difference and a bright colourful toe will make your feet look tidy and cared for. You can then maintain your feet by dry filing before you shower; hydrate your feet with a good foot lotion after a bath or shower. 1 week before – have a good haircut, as this will help get your hair in top condition. The amount of sun exposure and time spent in the pool or sea will then determine if you need it trimmed when you get back. If you are going to spend lots of time in the sunshine, then you’ll need something to protect your colour; use a conditioner in your hair if you are going to get it wet or wear a hat. Sun, Chlorine and sea water dries hair and strips out moisture.
3 days before – its waxing time. 2 days before – have a manicure, you need this as close to your holiday as possible so it lasts. Consider having a gel polish as this will definitely last your holiday and there is no waiting around for it to dry. 1 day before – Lash extensions if this is your thing. Remember if you are considering them, you will need a patch test at least 48 hours before and remember that you will need a non-oily make up remover over wise the oil will break down the bond used to attach the lashes. Happy Holidays
SOUTH Gloucestershire’s Over 50s Forum is marking its 25th anniversary with a pledge to continue making sure that people over 50 are respected and listened to. At its conference and AGM, the forum launched a survey, asking how residents of this age group would like their views to be heard, and what topics people would like skilled speakers to advise on. Chair of the Forum Margaret Slucutt said ‘This is a real opportunity to ensure the voice of all residents in South Gloucestershire, who are between 50 and 70 years of age, are heard. We have piloted evening meetings in Yate and Kingswood and we now want the input of people to help us develop this representation further.’ To complete the survey visit: http:// southglosover50sforum.btck.co.uk/. Or if you do not have access to a computer call 07967 102141 for a paper copy. Copies will also be accessible in libraries. The deadline is the end of July.

n WILLOW BROOK CLINIC
Let’s talk about posture
By Craig de Groot, Chiropractor at the Willow Brook Clinic
POSTURE is important whether we are at rest, performing physical tasks or undertaking repetitive actions. Good posture and care for the skeletal system is essential for overall good health. Be aware of your posture. Take notice of how you are holding your body and tune into those moments when you feel pain or discomfort. Pain is your nervous system warning you that something is wrong and that you need to change your behaviour. Be conscious of your breathing. Be aware of how you breathe. If your breathing is shallow, both your nervous system and internal organ function may be compromised. A slouched, compressed posture will not allow for proper abdominal breathing.
HAVE YOUR SAY
Stretch and unload your spine. Any activity that moves your spine will contribute greatly to not only your posture, but to your general health and wellbeing. Doing Pilates, yoga, walking, swimming or Tai Chi are examples of gentle exercise that can be beneficial for your posture and overall wellness through their effect on the musculo-skeletal and nervous system. Chiropractic care can improve the mobility of your spine and therefore have a positive effect on your posture, movement and nervous system. These simple tips are a good starting place to help your posture: Make sure that you stand up straight, with your shoulders back and relaxed. Pull in your
abdominals, relax your knees and stand with your weight evenly distributed across your feet. When you are sitting, make sure your feet touch the floor, your buttocks are at the back of the chair and your back is straight. Use a headset or hold your telephone instead of using your shoulder and neck to create a cradle while you are on the phone. If you need any more information about looking after your posture, contact a chiropractor for an assessment, advice and treatment. For generations, children have been told to stand up and sit up straight. History tells us that this is very good advice.
Get well, stay well.

Athlete meets idol after learning they were both born with heart defects A PROMISING young athlete from the Yate and District Athletics Club has met Olympic and World Champion runner Roger Black. The two have more than just athletics in common both were born with congenital heart disease, but have defied the odds to pursue their dreams. Luke Ball, is one of the leading UK under-15 athletes in high jump, and last season was ranked in the UK’s top 3 in his age group in four different athletic events. He met his athletics hero in support of the British Heart Foundation’s Face a Fear campaign, which encourages people to be fearless and conquer their biggest fear by the end of July to raise money for the charity’s life saving research. The pair shared stories of their triumphs on the track,
compared medals and how they overcame hurdles on the road to success. Luke left feeling even more motivated to follow in Roger’s footsteps, after Roger’s advice on how to succeed as a professional athlete. Roger, 52, and Luke were both born with congenital heart disease, where a heart condition or a defect develops in the womb. Every day, 12 babies are diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and it can be potentially life-threatening. Luke was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, where the arteries are plumbed the wrong way round and was operated on at just 12 weeks old. Roger was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition when he was 11 after it caused one of his heart valves to leak, and couldn’t take part in competitive sport until he was 13. Roger’s condition was closely monitored and he only ever missed one of his annual hospital appointments to go to the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, where he went on to win a silver medal. Luke said: “Even though I have a heart condition I don’t see myself as any different to any of my athletic competitors and I’m just as determined to be successful. I take advice from my doctors at my annual heart check-ups and, although I may have to have further surgery in the future, I don’t let this hold

me back. It was awesome to meet a track legend like Roger and to see his Olympic medal. I hope one day I will have one myself.” Roger said: “It was fantastic to meet a fearless young athlete like Luke. I’ve never let my heart condition hold me back and it’s great to see that he isn’t either. I’m proud to be a British Heart Foundation Ambassador and their research helps people like Luke and myself lead a fit and healthy life, ultimately enabling us to pursue our dreams to become athletes.”

Women’s cricket takes off in Coalpit Heath A WOMEN’S cricket team which was only set up in June, has already tasted success, winning some games at a cricket festival in Chippenham. Coalpit Heath Cricket Club coach Pete Lamb came up with the idea of a soft ball cricket team, as a way of encouraging more women into the game. It’s also hoped that those involved will get the chance to meet new people and have fun exercising. Team member Michelle Clark said: “The main reason
for soft ball cricket is that many women may find hard ball more intimidating. It can be a very fast pace so soft ball is a great alternative. The rules are very slightly different too.” Michelle is due to qualify as a level 2 coach and hopes to assist Pete Lamb in future. The team meets at the club on a Thursday evening from 6.30-8pm. There are about 18 members of all ages and abilities. No previous experience is needed.
Mixed Fortunes For Coalpit Heath Cricketers Hat-trick of promotions AS the season nears its mid season point, Coalpit Heath's three men's teams have endured a mixed season. The 1st XI, having secured back to back promotions are finding life tough in the Bristol & District Senior Division with just one win against local rivals Bradley Stoke CC to their name. Narrow defeats to Frenchay and Old Bristolians Westbury could easily have gone in Heath's favour on another day, but it wasn't to be. The 2nd XI have also endured a tough start after their back to back promotions. Struggles with player availability have hampered their season to date along with facing tough opposition in a league containing a number of 1st XI sides.
In stark contrast, the 3rd XI have had a very strong start to the season, and currently sit third in the 13th Division. A good mix of youth and experience has helped Jack Carrington's side record four wins from a possible six. The youth season is also up and running with the under 11's, under 13's and under 15's sides competing in league and cup matches. The Under 11 side secured their first win of the season at home to Hambrook Under 11's in the cup. All three sides are always looking for new players, and training is held on Tuesday (Under 15's & Under 13's) and Friday (Under 11's and Under 9's) evenings at Coalpit Heath Cricket club starting from 6pm.
for hockey club THERE were three promotions for a Hockey club that plays at Winterbourne Academy. The men’s 3rd, 4th and 5th teams of Bristol and West Hockey Club all achieved promotion from their leagues this season, making it a huge step forward for the club. The rest of the club also had success with 3 other teams finishing in the top half of their league and no relegations from any of the 7 senior teams. The first team decided that the main task for the season ahead was to remain in the league, after gaining promotion into the Conference North

division last season. They managed to do so with a solid 5th place finish in the top half of the table. The Bristol & District Summer League is underway with B&W having 4 teams competing throughout the divisions. The 1st XI are still competing in the top tier against national, premiership and championship clubs. Currently in 2nd place, results so far include a well-fought 6-4 Loss vs Bristol Indians, a 4-3 Win over fierce rivals Westbury after going 1-3 down and a dominant 7-1 win against City of Bath.
