Hundreds of new houses for Coalpit Heath confirmed in draft plan COALPIT Heath could be transformed if plans to build 1,800 new homes in the village come to fruition. The final draft of a plan for housing and development in the West of England has been published, with a new neighbourhood planned for the east of Coalpit Heath.

There would also be a local centre which would include shops, a primary school and employment land.

The Joint Spatial Plan covers the next twenty years and seeks to ad more than 30,000 homes across the region, including an extra 2,000 in nearby Yate.

The plans have already been subject to protests from people in Coalpit Heath who claim the proposals would ruin the area.

A SIMPLE “bag of calm” created by the Coalpit Heath mum of a boy with autism is being used at Yate Minor Injuries Unit to help other children struggling to cope with the medical surroundings.

It is thought the unit, which is run by care and health provider Sirona, is the first of its type to offer such support to children and their families and matron Sarah Tosh now hopes other emergency departments will adopt it.

Sarah discussed how to improve the experience for autistic children with Kelly Lloyd when her son Rowan, six, hurt his ankle playing football.

Kelly immediately created a bag complete with sensory toys and a brightly coloured weighted cuddle blanket for use in the unit, which already has a child friendly distraction box in the clinic rooms and a quiet room where people can wait if necessary.

Kelly, 41, a mother-of-four, said: “It is so lovely that Sarah and Sirona embraced this. We all know the pressure that staff are under but they are taking the

“Anxiety levels for children with autism can increase very quickly. I want to do as much as I can to raise awareness.”

Jo Marie Shanks, from the community organisation South Glos Parents and Carers, said: “We like celebrating good practice and we are keen to promote this as it is improving access to services and reducing stress levels for families.”

Sarah said: “Children with autism need a different approach as they cannot communicate how they feel.

“If a parent or carer informs our receptionist that their child is autistic, we ensure they are seen quickly as we know they do not like lots of noise and can be agitated by lights or sounds.

There are different triggers which can cause them to be upset.

“The bag is full of sensory related items which will help keep them calm while they are being assessed and I’m sure

it will make a difference. The weighted blanket is like receiving a hug as it makes someone feel secure.”

n NEWS THE final draft of a blueprint for housing and employment development in the West of England has included thousands more homes for South Gloucestershire, including 1,800 in Coalpit Heath.

The document said land to the east of the village would provide a new neighbourhood, with affordable homes included in the overall number.

A local centre, incorporating at least one primary school, a shop and community facility, as well as employment land, are also included in the Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) draft.

The JSP further spoke of establishing a green infrastructure network that would reinforce a new green belt boundary along the railway cutting, provide attractive routes through the site to nearby

Draft plan proposes 1,800 homes for Coalpit Heath countryside - including the historic Dramway - and protect the setting of nearby listed buildings.

A transport package in the draft included extending the Metrobus to Yate and Chipping Sodbury; a Winterbourne and Frampton Cotterell bypass; an A432 park and ride and Yate railway station improvements.

Yate itself could get at least another 2,000 homes, of which at least 1,000 would be built within the plan period of 20 years.

The document said two broad locations to the north west and

west of Yate would provide a new residential neighbourhood and employment area.

In total, South Gloucestershire is set to expand by 32,500 homes up to 2036, with other allocations including 1,200 in Charfield and a further 500 in Thornbury - which has already seen large scale house building and other plans also given approval.

The controversial Buckover “garden village” scheme for land near Thornbury has also been kept in the JSP. Overall, the project could see 3,000 homes built but 1,500 have been included for the plan period.

The JSP sets out the overall amount of residential and employment development and where it should be located in the West of England, as well as the infrastructure to support it.

The draft is due to be discussed by South Gloucestershire Council on November 8.

Subject to the approval of the four councils within the West of England, consultation is planned this winter before the document and feedback received is sent to the Secretary of State for examination next year.

n NEWS THE cricket square and football pitch on Hambrook Common has been vandalised, barely a month after Coalpit Heath Cricket Club suffered the same fate.

Tyre marks were left all over the common, including the roped off cricket square.

The chairman of Hambrook Cricket Club, Martin Dyer, took to Facebook to vent his anger: “If anyone can help us pinpoint the mindless morons/ idiot(s) that did this it would be greatly appreciated. I really can’t say much more other than the sheer anger the Cricket and Football clubs have toward the perpetrators of this wanton vandalism!”

Harvest day pulls the crowds MILD autumn weather helped organisers at Winterbourne Medieval Barn attract 1400 visitors to their Orchard Harvest Day. Cidermaking, apple information, flax and linen demonstrations and a steam engine were amongst the attractions for visitors to the historic attraction.

Football clubhouse broken into FRAMPTON Athletic have been counting the cost after thieves broke into their clubhouse on Beesmoor Road playing fields. Vandals smashed a window to get in and then smashed a fridge to take drinks and other items from the clubhouse.

The club’s TV was taken and found in a hedge, although a local resident has provided a replacement.

The display fridge remains damaged and the club is appealing for sponsorship and support to help replace it and other items that were taken.

The break in came after the club had spent time refurbishing the clubhouse to modernise its look.

Road injuries lead to Winterbourne speed limit plan for primary keeps Ofsted’s good rating Frampton Cotterell ST Michael’s Church of England Primary School continues to provide a good quality of education, an Ofsted inspector has said.

The Winterbourne school underwent a short inspection recently - the first since a full assessment in 2013 rated it as good.

Ofsted said the leadership team had maintained that standard, with co-headteachers Adrian Vye and Kirsty Robson, who shared the headship role across the week, working together effectively.

A report said since the previous inspection, a new early years setting had been established on the school site and children’s education in the reception year was benefiting from the strong working partnership developed with the pre-school.

It said pupils and parents spoke of a harmonious school community.

Pupils also showed their respect through good behaviour, diligence in lessons and the careful presentation of their work.

A SPEED limit of 30mph is set to be introduced on a stretch of the B4058 Bristol Road in Frampton Cotterell in an attempt to cut the casualty rate.

In the five years between November 2011 and November 2016, there were eight injury accidents on the section of road to be governed by the restriction.

It is now proposed to bring in a 30mph restriction from a location 48 metres north east of the Perrinpit Road and Church Road junction to existing speed limit signs east of Winterbourne.

The scheme has been included in the 2017/18 local

transport capital programme and will involve the introduction of new hatched road markings from Perrinpit Road/Church Road to Court Road.

Improved junction warning signs will also be installed.

Details of the scheme are available on the South Gloucestershire Council website and any comments have to be received by November 17.

Father Christmas drops in to Air Ambulance crew ahead of trip to Coalpit Heath FATHER Christmas has made a journey from the North Pole to check the details of his two day visit to Coalpit Heath Cricket Club. He will be visiting the club over the first weekend in December.

Coalpit Heath Cricket Club will be hosting the two day grotto event, with all proceeds going to the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity. The event will run from 10am - 5pm on both days. Entry is free, but there will be a charge of £5.00 per child to visit Father Christmas including an age related gift.

Carolyn Williams and Maria Lowe decided to organise the event, with the support of the Cricket Club, because Maria was attended by the Air Ambulance team after a motorcycle accident at Old Sodbury in 2012.

Maria said “It’s such a vital service, and yet they receive no day to day funding from the Government or National Lottery.

Fund raising couple have stamp appeal licked A SOUTH Gloucestershire couple who support a charity that fights blindness have appealed for used stamps to be sent to them.

Ron and Gina Pritchard are co-ordinators for RP Fighting Blindness and work to let more people know about the disease retinitis pigmentosa – known as RP – which leads to loss of vision and blindness.

They also help to raise money for research that is aimed at finding a treatment or cure for the 25,000 people in the UK of all ages who are affected by the condition.

The couple, who live in Winterbourne, said the charity recently announced a new collaboration with the Macular Society to fund young PhD students to carry out research in the field of genetic macular diseases.

A used stamps appeal is already well supported by people in South Gloucestershire but Ron and Gina said they were needed more than ever now in order to fund the latest research project.

They can also accept unwanted stamp collections, as well as old and foreign coins. The donated items are then sold on to dealers to raise funds.

The couple said: “There are now patients in clinical trials - help us give them a hope of vision.”

Stamps to be donated should be preferably cut outside the perforations, together with the corner of the envelopes bearing them, and sent to 22 Huckford Road, Winterbourne, Bristol, BS36 1EA. Trust invites bids for grants to help churches CHURCHES in need of repair or improvement could be eligible for a grant from an organisation that helps congregations look after their buildings.

The Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust supports the maintenance of churches of any Christian denomination in South Gloucestershire, north Bristol and Gloucestershire if there is a struggle to meet the costs of such work.

Last year it awarded £130,000 for a wide variety of projects, helping 37 congregations keep their churches viable.

Recent beneficiaries

include All Saints’ Church in Winterbourne Down, Cromhall Evangelical Chapel, St Leonard’s Church in Tortworth and Yate Methodist Church.

Grants are distributed twice a year, with the next deadline for applications set for the end of April, with trust committee members meeting each December and June to decide where the cash should go.

Preference is given to churches which are in regular use and open to visitors as often as possible, and which can demonstrate a contribution to the local community.

Police appeal for witnesses to Iron Acton hit and run

POLICE are investigating a hit and run incident near Iron Acton.

The incident happened at about 2.50pm on 25 September on Yate Road, near to Iron Acton Garden Centre.

A motorcycle was in collision with a black car – possibly a Honda – which had blacked out windows.

The motorcyclist was hit from the back, causing the bike to suffer considerable damage. The car failed to stop.

The motorcyclist suffered minor injuries, which did not require hospital treatment.

Police believe there may have been witnesses to the incident and want them to come forward.

Grants on offer COMMUNITY groups and voluntary organisations across Avon and Somerset are being invited to bid for funding from the area’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens.

Grants of up to £3,000 are available for groups that provide a positive and lasting impact across the local communities of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Somerset.

In the latest round of funding over £25,000 was awarded to 13 projects that offer diversionary activities for young people, provide crime prevention solutions such as the installation of CCTV and tackle anti-social behaviour.

MP asks for feedback on later Sort It centre opening hours LOCAL MP Luke Hall says he is to look into operating hours of local sort-it centres after residents said they are inconvenient for working families.

Sort It centres across South Gloucestershire are open 8:30am to 4:30pm 7 days a week for people to recycle household waste, but there is no evening opening.

South Gloucestershire Council has told Mr Hall that the present hours offer the best options within the budget available, with later opening hours in the past seeing a low number of users.

Frampton man completes fundraising challenge A MAN from Frampton Cotterell has completed a 266-mile fundraising challenge.

Alan West has cycled 240 miles from Richmond Park in London to the Champs-Elysees in Paris to help raise money for international development organisation Transaid.

The latest sporting endeavour comes just seven months after the 41-year-old took part in the Paris Marathon. In April Alan ran the 26-mile event with a stress fracture but was able to recover in time to train and take part in the cycle ride.

Transaid, for which Alan is an ambassador, works to transform lives through safe, available, and sustainable transport in economically developing countries.

Alan, who works for DHL Supply Chain and is based in the South West, said “Memories of the excruciating pain of the training and marathon in April has now been replaced with a real sense of achievement with what I’ve done this year. The commitment, hours of training and pain genuinely feels worth it now, for a cause I feel very strongly about. I might just allow myself a beer!”

Residents soon to move Motivated youngsters into latest affordable and inspirational staff make Coalpit Heath pre- homes in Coalpit Heath school outstanding

A PRE-School in Coalpit Heath has been rated outstanding by education standards watchdog Ofsted.

The Little Explorers PreSchool, which is based in the Manor Hall, was also given assessments of outstanding in all key areas.

In her report, Ofsted inspector Victoria Nicolson said the manager “strives for excellence” and described the staff as “inspirational teachers”.

She also said the children progressed extremely well from their starting points.

They were provided with

“a highly exciting learning environment” and enjoyed taking part in regular outings to explore the outside world.

Ms Nicolson said: “Children demonstrate a can-do attitude and are highly motivated to learn.

“Children take part in lots of physical activity and develop excellent co-ordination skills as they balance and steer the bicycles in the garden and practise new skills during their music and movement sessions.

“All children are very well prepared for the next stage in their learning.”

THE first of 72 new affordable homes being built by housing association Merlin in Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton are nearly ready for occupation.

Merlin is building the homes on several sites in the villages to replace 44 old properties that were in a poor state.

Their condition had deteriorated since they were built more than 60 years ago.

Work on the first replacement homes began earlier this year and residents will soon be able to move into four of them in Coalpit Heath.

Elsewhere in the village, properties are at various stages of construction, with roofs already on all the homes on two of the sites.

Meanwhile, work is underway on two further plots, while Iron Acton’s two sites are also developing.

Merlin’s development manager, Noreen Twomey, said: “We’re delighted with the progress that’s been made so far. The homes are really starting to take shape and it won’t be long before the first customers are moving in.”

All the homes are due to be completed in phases between late 2017 and the end of 2018.

The latest Coalpit Heath properties come after Merlin completed 39 others in the village in 2016.

Most of the new homes will be available to rent through South Gloucestershire Council’s lettings system Homechoice. Five properties will be available to buy through shared ownership.

Long-serving staff thanked for their work by homecare provider A PERSONAL homecare provider in South Gloucestershire has celebrated four years of trading with a presentation to long-serving members of staff.

Bluebird Care South Gloucestershire, based in Chipping Sodbury, provides home and live-in care to the elderly and adults with disabilities across the district from Thornbury to Charfield, from Yate to Almondsbury and all the surrounding towns and villages.

Managing director Jack Whitfield, said: “We never thought support for our work would have grown so quickly in such a short space of time.

“We prioritise ourselves on delivering a standard of care that must be good enough for our own parents.”

Mr Whitfield owns and manages the office with his wife, Sophie, and they still have three of their original five care workers with them - Karina Hale, Dawn Mortiboys and Tara Bees.

He said: “Our current staff roster includes mothers and daughters and cousins across two families. We aim to provide a high quality ‘home’ feel to the work we do.”

New course is ‘Just the Job’ A NEW course is on offer at SGS College which will help 1618 year olds enter the world of work.

New chairman takes on role with leisure centre operators KEEN runner and skier Ross Parker has been appointed chairman of the organisation that runs South Gloucestershire’s leisure centres, including those in Yate and Bradley Stoke.

A senior economist with Bristol-based Imperial brands, Mr Parker joined the Circadian Trust in 2014 and helped oversee the expansion plans for the Bradley Stoke and Longwell Green centres.

He said: “I have seen the trust make significant strides over the past three years, inspiring a range of clients to adopt a healthy lifestyle, not just through sport and activity but through a total lifestyle approach to their well-being.

“I am particularly proud of our achievements with harderto-reach communities through initiatives such as the dementia cafe and helping people rehabilitate after significant illness.”

Mr Parker takes over from Jon Edwards, who has stepped down after 12 years in the role.

'Please to remember the Fifth of November Gunpowder Treason and Plot'

THE new BBC drama 'Gunpowder' has helped focus the mind into the Remembering Season which is at the heart of November. The month sees the Christian festivals of All Saints and All Souls, Bonfire Night and of course Remembrance Day and Sunday. Each of these occasions help us to look back to and reflect on events and heroes of the past, to remember loved ones who have died and are no longer with us in the physical sense.

This Years' Remembrance service at St Peter's has a special significance as we not only remember those who gave their lives in both the First and Second World Wars in our traditional act of remembrance by the war memorial. It is also an occasion when we will dedicate our ‘new

memorial’ to the 24 members of our community who made the ultimate sacrifice. The memorial, inside the Church, has at its centre piece ceramic poppies, purchased from the display that was held at the Tower of London, one for each of the servicemen named and remembered on the main war memorial in the church yard.

In a world where political peace for us all is far from certain, with nations and communities divided from each other, it is more important than ever to reflect for a few moments on the sacrifice men and women have made to enable us to have a future. The word memorial is significant in both the Judaistic and Christian traditions, it means literally 'The past becoming present'.

As we reflect on and remember the past sacrifice of people form our community, as that memory helps us to influence our attitudes to those around us and all we face in our modern world, as we do this afresh this Remembrance time, our hope and prayer must be that all we do will bring future 'peace and hope' for all the people of our world.

n COMMUNITY NEWS 13 EXPLORER Scouts from Zeus Explorer Scout Unit based in Frampton Cotterell, have recently returned from a trip to Kelbra, Frampton Cotterell's twin town in Germany.

The Explorers were invited to visit the School, where they spoke to pupils about Scouting and life in England and took part in a football match with them.

They walked in the nearby hills with local scouts and visited local places of interest including Dora Concentration Camp, an escape room in Nordhausen and walking over a long rope bridge in the Harz Mountains.

Scouts from Frampton Cotterell have developed a wonderful relationship with our friends in Kelbra over the years, with over 250 young people visiting the town on previous trips.

n AROUND THE WIs Winterbourne Evening W.I Our members enjoyed an excellent 61st Birthday meeting complete with a lovely cake, drinks and a talk by Sarah Harris entitled Marie Antoinette's Guide to Farming.

Sarah told us that she wouldn't actually talk about Marie Antoinette at all but rather about being a mother of three and her rather accidental progress into becoming an amateur farmer and ultimately the owner, along with her husband, of a popular wool shop in Clevedon.

One of Sarah's twin boys was born with severe disabilities she told us the story of raising him, along with her two other children, with much humour.

Sarah related adventures with the sheep in the orchard and of course Barry the Bantam who must have been the most amorous bantam in history. He will be remembered by us all.

A number of us attended the Avon Federation AGM. The morning speaker was Rosie Thompson of the Not Forgotten Society, formed in 1920 to alleviate problems of loneliness and isolation experienced by injured soldiers returning from the war. A very inspiring and moving speech.

In the afternoon Julie Summers, author of the book Jambusters which became the Television series Home Fires, told us about the amazing work the WI, a pacifist organisation, did during the war including jam making, knitting and collecting plants for medical purposes.

At our next meeting on 9th November at 7.30pm in the St Michaels Rooms, High Street, Winterbourne. Our speaker will be Paul Evans with humorous poems, readings and monologues. Do come along and join us, we will be very pleased to see you.

‘Arabella' (Anna - right) and Bex (left) strike a pose for Frampton WI We had an excellent trip to the Bishop’s Palace,Wells with a guided tour around the splendid gardens, starting in the ruins of the Great Hall where only the four corner pillars remain from the early 16th century. Bishop Barlow sold the lead from the roof to raise funds in 1550.

There were some beautiful dahlias named rafter various Bishops. We learnt that the name of Wells was derived from many springs or wells in the area which rise in the gardens. The water flows in at 180 gallons per minute and the flow is controlled with sluice gates to prevent flooding.

There were allotments on the side garden. Some of us visited the palace and saw the vaulted undercroft and portraits of the previous Bishops of Wells, one being Bishop Carey who became Archbishop of Canterbury in recent years. When we came out of the palace there was a croquet match on the lawn.

At our meeting we had Adele Brown giving us a flower demonstration in a decorated tin. We were surprised when she arrived with only two small bags, but was able to demonstrate a beautiful floral arrangement with very few flowers and some gold wire decorations.

We have had a trip to Jayne Austin centre in Bath followed by our 95th birthday meal at Daisy’s. Our annual meeting is in November when we have a cheese and bread supper.

Our meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at All Saints Church Hall in Winterbourne Down at 7:30pm. Visitors are always welcome.

Our Annual General Meeting is to be held on 28 November this year – this night is going to be very important to WI members as its also the night when we will be celebrating the 65th birthday of Frampton Cotterell WI. It’s a very special achievement, especially as some of our members have been with us for well over 50 years – needless to say there will be a special cake and Prosecco to help us celebrate. Best of all, the Frampton Shanty Men are coming along to serenade us and to mark the occasion.

Yate nurse scoops award A YATE district nurse was among the winners at an annual staff celebration held by community health provider Sirona.

Helen Gowen, the district nurse team leader in Yate, received the personal development award at a ceremony held at the Bristol and Bath Science Park.

Sirona provides community health and care services in South Gloucestershire and neighbouring areas, with staff from all sections of the notfor-profit social enterprise recognised at the ceremony.

Jenny Theed, its director of operations and nursing, thanked staff for “the enormous contribution you make to Sirona and for the difference you make to the lives of so many people”.

Others in the spotlight included the Thornbury Hospital team while the leadership award was won by Deana Taylor, operational manager

for community children’s health services in South Gloucestershire.

The hospital was given special praise after being highlighted in a recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection of Sirona’s services, which led to an overall rating of good.

In the key area of care, the CQC rated Sirona’s provision as outstanding, with staff at the hospital picked out for the way they ensured every patient was cared for with compassion and dignity.

Amanda Eddington, of the CQC in the South West, said: “We found staff going the extra mile with people consistently receiving care which exceeded their expectations.

“Staff did their utmost to be caring and supportive and this allowed care to be effective, consistent and professional. Staff were proud of the organisation and the services the teams they worked in were providing.

“We also found end-of-life care outstanding. There was holistic and person-centred support completely embedded within the department with patients and family fully involved and informed about all aspects of

treatment and care.

“That important attention to detail and level of care, treatment and support provided by staff far exceeded expectations.”

Pools re-opened at Yate leisure centre THE swimming pools at Yate’s leisure centre were due to re-open as Frome Valley Voice went to press, seven months after closing for a £1.4 million refurbishment.

An official opening was organised to welcome swimmers back, with town councillor and South Gloucestershire Council chairman Ian Blair invited to cut a ribbon and see users take the plunge in the upgraded facilities.

A free open day has now been organised for Saturday, November 4, so people can look round the centre and try out the main and learner pools.

The work was funded

by South Gloucestershire Council and included replacing pipework and installing new, environmentally friendly equipment.

Mark Crutchley, chief executive of the Circadian Trust, which manages and runs the centre on behalf of the council,

said: “This has been a major project that has taken us only seven months to complete.

“We’re committed to offering the best facilities to our customers and this work will ensure that we continue to do so. When people come to use the pool, I think they’ll realise that it was well worth the wait.”

Mr Blair said the “wonderfully refurbished pool facilities” were a huge asset for Yate and the surrounding area.

A temporary pool, believed to have been one of the biggest of

its kind, was installed to the rear of the Kennedy Way car park while the centre’s pools were out of action so people could still go

swimming.

Work to dismantle it will now start in the coming weeks.

Stamp of approval for post office at the pub THE first anniversary of the re-opening of North Road post office in Yate has been celebrated at the pub where it is now located.

Users had been left without postal services when the couple who ran the previous post office retired in 2015 and the premises were withdrawn from post office use.

Publicans Jenna Hale and Paul Jefferies, who run the Codrington Arms further up the road, were approached by Post Office Ltd to see if they were interested in accommodating the post office on the pub site.

They agreed to take it on and incorporate it into a convenience store they were about to open behind the pub in an old barn.

It has now become an important feature in the community and its first anniversary was marked by those who use it.

Jenna said the facility had been well supported by local people and businesses and she

and Paul wanted to thank them.

The project had also been made possible due to a £1,500

grant from the Pub is The Hub organisation, which helped fund the conversion of the disused barn.

Ladden Brook councillor Marian Lewis said: “The whole community is delighted with the services provided by the post office and shop.

“We are particularly pleased with the post office facility, which must have saved us from hundreds of journeys into Yate and long queues in the main post office there.

“As predicted, the old barn serves the communities of Rangeworthy and Iron Acton as well as Engine Common.”

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall, said: “After a year of successful business it was great to be able to once again recognise Jenna and Paul’s efforts to bring back such an important service for the local community."

Customer satisfaction continues to rise at Merlin Customer satisfaction with overall services provided by local housing association Merlin has increased to an 18-month high, as customers say they are increasingly happy with the service they receive when they call in.

Merlin’s rolling average of customer satisfaction has increased to 85.9%.

It means the housing association is close to hitting its target of 86% customer satisfaction for the year. The improvement in overall satisfaction has been supported by an increase in satisfaction with Merlin’s customer services team who respond to all calls made by customers. Satisfaction with this service has now increased to an all-time high.

As well as answering questions, customers are also given the chance to leave comments about the service they’ve received. Among the positive comments made during the last three months were:

“Our goal is to increase satisfaction to 90%

by March 2019”

“Fortunately we don’t have to call you very often. When we do, you are always prompt to put things right.”

And: “Thank you for an absolutely wonderful service. I am very happy with the rest and Merlin have been a pleasure to talk to.”

And:

“We would like to praise the support worker, she has changed our lives and is very supportive.”

The improvement in overall satisfaction has also been helped by an increase in customer satisfaction with the quality of their home which increased to 86.9% over the past three months, and increased satisfaction with Merlin’s communal cleaning and grounds maintenance services.

Research and Development Manager Jo Ellis said: “It’s great to see that customers are getting happier with our services and the quality of their home. Staff from across the business have been making a concerted effort to improve customer satisfaction by listening to customers and responding promptly to any queries.

“But while we’re close to meeting our target of 86% satisfaction for the year, we know we can do even better. Our goal is to increase satisfaction to 90% by March 2019.

It’s a challenging target but we’re working hard to achieve this. And the feedback we receive from customers through our survey helps us to identify areas where we need to improve. Achieving that 90% target will help us in our goal of becoming a world class service and is a key priority for the business.”

At the same time as seeing overall satisfaction scores increase, Merlin has also seen high levels of satisfaction with its lettings service.

For the third consecutive month, customers who have moved into new homes have scored the service at 100%.

We send out the Star satisfaction survey to a random selection of customers every three months.

Over the past year more than 800 people have responded to the survey.

72 new affordable homes being built in Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton

Building work is nearly finished on the first of 72 new affordable homes being built in Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton by a local housing association.

Merlin is building the new homes across several sites in the two villages.

The homes are being built to replace 44 old properties whose condition had deteriorated since they were built more than 60 years ago.

Work on the first homes began earlier this year and the four new homes on the first site in Coalpit Heath are now nearing completion, ready for the first residents to move in. Elsewhere in the village, homes are at various stages of construction, with roofs already on all the homes on two sites, while work is well underway on two further sites and on two sites in Iron Acton.

Development Manager Noreen Twomey said: “We’re delighted with the progress that’s been made so far. The homes are really starting to take shape and it won’t be long before the first customers are moving in.”

The homes are due to be completed in phases from late 2017 to the end of 2018, with the first homes on track to be finished at the end of this year. Most of the new homes will be available to rent through South Gloucestershire Council’s choice-based lettings system, Homechoice. Five homes will be available to buy through shared ownership. The condition known as benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) and hypertrophy (BPH) does not occur because of the presence of cancer, but due to the fact the prostate continues to grow throughout most of a man’s adult life. The condition itself is not a threat to a man’s health, but it can have dramatic impacts on their quality of life.

Local Police News with PCSO Beth Harrington LOCAL farmers are concerned about people getting unauthorised access to their land for ‘lamping’ – hunting at night.

Last month 31 cows got onto a main road at night after a gate was left open. It’s fortunate no one was hurt.

It’s important to keep land and property secure: • Sign up to Farm Watch • Fit good locks to doors and windows • Report suspicious activity, with details of the exact location, description of those involved and any vehicles or dogs they have • Keep photographs and descriptions of animals, tools, equipment, vehicles and other valuables • Make sure boundaries are secure with sturdy fencing and locked gates • Fit low-energy security lighting, CCTV and alarms, especially around buildings We’ve had recent reports of people cold-calling and leafleting, offering to clean driveways or make roof or gutter repairs.

While many legitimate firms use promotional leaflets, it’s a favourite

tactic for so-called ‘rogue traders’ who persuade householders to have work done unnecessarily, to a poor standard or who overcharge.

There’s a link between rogue traders, who may have convictions for fraud and other offences, and burglars.

Recently a man offered to make repairs for an elderly householder in Bristol, then stole cash from him and made off without doing any work. Thanks to a call with vehicle details from a concerned witness, we made an arrest.

Gaming machines planned for vacant retail unit in Yate AN amusement centre could be opened in Yate if a plan for an empty unit in the town’s shopping precinct is approved.

Mirage Property Services has applied for permission to use a former jewellers in Yate Shopping Centre’s North Walk as an adult-only centre, fitted out with gaming machines.

The application said if the scheme went ahead, under-18s

would not be allowed into the premises, which have been vacant since 2013.

Documents submitted with the plan said Mirage was part of the Shipleys Amusement Centres group, which was seeking new sites after selling a number of trading premises.

They said the business would “add to diversity and choice, not harm the character or trade of

The exhibition, at Frenchay Museum, includes a display about Nigel de Brulier, who was born Francis Packer and went on to have an illustrious career in the film industry.

Francis was born in one of the lodges of Frenchay Park in 1877 and was educated at Frenchay School until he was 11-years-old, when he left to start work in Frenchay Park House as a hall boy. In 1897 he emigrated to America and began his movie career.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style Our continuing look at the used Alternatively Fuelled Vehicle (AFV) market Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, 2010 – present: Ever so nice, but what a price If, by some miracle, you’ve read all three of my articles so far you’d be forgiven for thinking that I don’t much like AFVs. Limited range, sometimes unnecessary styling, questionable use of materials - all have conspired in varying degrees to prevent me from making a ringing endorsement. So can a premium offering from Stuttgart change all that?

Well the answer is yes, in short.

The Cayenne has been with us since 2003, and Porsche have progressively put petrol, diesel

and then hybrid motors under the bonnet. They may not bother with a diesel for the new model, but that’s another story. What has also happened, to my eyes at least, is a gradual softening of the Cayenne’s previously ungainly looks. Porsche have somehow managed to make it longer and wider but look shorter and narrower. Clever stuff, but I still took real care around the narrower lanes of Frampton Cotterell. The Cayenne has also got a whole lot more reliable – MK1 ’03 to ‘07 cars are a brave second hand choice. Unsurprisingly I have the Hybrid on test, originally released in 2010 with the supercharged 3.0 V6 petrol from Audi’s S4. This combines with a Bosch electric motor of increasing output to produce between 333bhp and 416bhp.

My 2016 ‘S’ test model, a plug-in, is the full power version

and goes extremely well. The V6 is a gem, the 8 speed gearbox really smooth and there’s no hint of supercharger whine, just a silky crescendo as the revs rise through four oval exhausts. There are three engine/battery settings of mounting excitement, and in ‘Sport’ they combine to deliver 0-60 in under 6 seconds. Porsche kindly claim a comedic 85mpg to ensure you pay no road tax for all this fun. They’re only fooling the authorities though; over 7,000 miles this one has managed 32mpg, which is still fabulous for a 2 tonne Clifton tractor that happens to run like a sports car.

Feeling sensible? Let the battery power the car under 30% throttle (monitored by the handy gauge provided). You can travel at up to 75mph on battery power alone, or for 25 miles at lower speeds.

Behind the wheel it feels very

Porsche, which means 5 precise dials, a small and well-trimmed steering wheel and the feeling of sitting in rather than on the comfortable and body hugging seats. You have to look out of the window to remember you’re in an SUV. For passengers it felt a bit more like being in a very nice Audi, which in a way you are of course.

All the fittings looked and felt superb, as they should at this price.

And what a price - £80k+ new, and not depreciating anywhere near quick enough for me, despite there being plenty on the used market outside of main dealers. Blame that on a sky-high image conferred by the badge, coupled with solid Porsche build and proven VWGroup mechanical reliability.

This car is all about beating the tax man in style. Forget about any environmental credentials and instead know this: If you’re in the market for a second-hand Cayenne you don’t need to look any further than the Hybrid version. But it is very far from a bargain, and that means it misses out on being my used AFV winner by a whisker…

More top names for Thornbury Arts Festival BARONESS Shirley Williams and TV wildlife presenter Simon King are the latest big names to be included in the next Thornbury Arts Festival.

Politician Shirley Williams, who was once tipped to be the UK's first woman prime minister,

was one of the Gang of Four Labour MPs who quit to form the Social Democratic Party in the early 1980s, changing the political landscape.

She supported the establishment of the Liberal Democrats in 1987 and stood down as their leader in the House of Lords in September 2004 after three years of service.

Previously, when a member of the Labour party, she had served as a member of both the Wilson and Callaghan governments in the 1960s and 70s.

She recently retired from the House of Lords after 50 years in politics and was made a Companion of Honour in the last New Year’s Honours list.

Simon King’s fascination with wildlife began in his childhood

EMERSONS Green Town Council has voted to support the idea of a new junction 18a on the M4.

Seven councillors took part in the vote at the full council meeting on October 12.

They passed a resolution explaining why they preferred the suggested western option behind the science park. It said: • A junction in this area has been requested for years by people living in the area • Industrial sites and the science park have been developed in this area with a view to better motorway access • A junction in this area will support better access to employment • The eastern option would be more disruptive and would have an impact on forestry.

HE second draft of the West of England Joint Spatial Plan, which sets out the Council’s housing and development plans until 2036 is on the horizon, and will be published by the time the Frome Valley voice hits doormats in November.

Despite a huge campaign from the community, South Gloucestershire Council are almost certainly going to try and press ahead with their plans to see close to 1,500 houses in Coalpit heath.

But the fight against these flawed plans, and the opportunity to get this right is certainly far from over.

Since these plans were first outlined, we have fought tooth and nail against these plans to develop on our precious greenbelt.

I have debated these plans in the House of Commons, making Ministers and Downing Street aware of the complete lack of any

Frankie goes to Goalden Globes - and wins national netball award NETBALL coach Frankie Nutt has won a top accolade from the sport’s national governing body.

Having already won the grassroots coach award of the year at the 2017 South West Goalden Globe event, Frankie went on to represent the region at the England final, where she then won the national title.

Frankie, of Old Sodbury, has provided coaching opportunities and training across the former Avon area, as well as introducing more than 130 new players to netball.

England Netball said she won her award for her “excellent work in providing young talented netballers with a focused environment to progress through

the Avon Academy performance pathway”.

But Frankie, who has two young sons, said: “I was a bit dumbstruck. I just didn’t expect it.”

As well as coaching at clubs at Bath University and Colston’s Girls’ School in Bristol, Frankie also runs a Back to Netball group that plays at Chipping Sodbury School.

But she said it was largely through a friend that she became involved in the sport and developed her role.

She said: “I didn’t really play netball at school but a good friend launched a team in Yate and pestered me about it. It all spiralled from there really.”

n SPORT Frampton Cotterell U 14’s 10 - 10 Nailsea and Backwell Rob Pearce reports A NUMBER of players made their debuts for Frampton Under 14’s in the match against Nailsea and Backwell at Crossbow.

The game started well with both teams finding their feet in windy conditions. Frampton were being pushed back by a strong Nailsea and Backwell, pack but were defending well and a crunching tackle by Corey in the opening minutes set the tone for the game.

The deadlock was broken midway through the first half when the visitors found a gap and rushed through for the opening try. Ed was being kept busy at full back but was covering well and had several good run backs before hitting traffic.

Nailsea and Backwell extended their lead as the half drew to a close when a burst of

The second half started with Frampton in buoyant mood. The balance shifted towards the home side when following a scrum, Rohan at scrum half found Jack in support and his short run and pass found Corey whose burst of speed gave him the edge to dive over for a debut score.

With Frampton’s tails up, another great passing move was finished off by Nik on the wing for the equalising try in the corner. Both Mike and Finn had good runs as Frampton pushed on for the win, but an organised Nailsea and Backwell side kept the home side out.

Hockey women in promotion hunt after October wins PUCKLECHURCH Ladies are second in the table after wins throughout October.

The match against Bristol Ladies was a hard fought affair.

At times there appeared to be a force field around Bristol’s goal, but eventually defender Jan (playing left wing) connected with a great cross in to win the game 1-0.

Pucklechurch faced table toppers Thornbury with two of their defenders holidaying in the Hockey season.

Jen Martyn stepped in to the keepers kit for the first time in many months and new recruit Claudia also stepped into the breach, but Puckechurch headed to the half time talk 0-1 down.

Pucklechurch put Thornbury under immense pressure in the second half and secured the win 3-1 with goals from Amy Nicholls, Charlie James and Hitch.

The next game was against Yate 3 who were demoted with Pucklechurch at the end of last season.

Injury to defender Candice saw Tina Hill step into an unusual position for her. Further injury to captain Laura stone with broken toes meant Charlie James also played out of position. Despite this, Pucklechurch came away with a 2-1 Win. A break from the league meant a friendly game against great side Knowle ladies. Pucklechurch didn’t get the memo about fancy dress with the opposition rocking up as penguins, skeletons and flamingos.

The Knowle youngsters won 4-0 to spoil the prospect of a perfect month of results.

Frampton finally get the better of St Mary’s Frampton Rugby Club have beaten St Mary's in a ‘2 for 1’ fixture which counted for both the Gloucester Premiership and the Bristol Combination Vase. Frampton come out on top for the first time in 3 seasons.

Sy Mary's got on the scored board early through a strong run by their centre Brooker. Frampton fought back with two tries in the first half through Rhys Jennings and Austen Davies.

The second half was much tighter affair, and although Frampton scored a further two tries through Rhys Jennings and George Frost to gain the 4 try bonus point, St Mary's continued to chip away at the score line through mistakes made by Frampton with the final score being 22-18.

Frampton had less positive outcomes to their two other games in October. Both were narrowly lost, but Frampton gained bonus points in each game. Frampton lost 12-8 to Barton Hill and 44-36 to Cheltenham Saracens.

In November Frampton are up against local rivals Chipping Sodbury and are hoping to improve on their current 8th position in Gloucester Prem. New Players are always welcome to join, training is on Tuesdays and Thursday 7-8.30pm.

Old boys take on Old Wolves in 40th anniversary rugby match FRAMPTON Vets have hosted Vieux Loups (The Old Wolves) from Paris as the clubs celebrated a landmark in their cross-channel friendship.

The rugby relationship started in 1977 and for forty years the two clubs have visited each other. The focal point of the weekend is Le Crunch game when friendship is put to one side and the players go into battle for the Victory Trophy.

Led by skipper Mark Smith, Frampton came out on top again to retain the trophy in a 19-5 win, with tries from man of the match John Stewart and Tommy Harris . Mike Ashwin added four points with the boot. Prop Pete Zaffiro who is approaching 60 years old played, and there was also a cameo from one of Framptons best scrum halves, Simon Fairbanks. The biggest cheer of the day came as Mike Weaver thought he was still 20 years old and got flattened by his good friend Frederic Aloy .

After the match, the two teams enjoyed a traditional fish and chip supper .

Sweeping changes for Frampton Athletic as new season gets underway FRAMPTON Athletic have undergone a series of changes both behind the scenes and on the pitch as they face the sew season. The management structure has been shaken up, and there’s been a reduction in the number of teams they are putting out each Saturday.

The good news was a 15-0 win over Doddington. The bad news was a break-in at the clubhouse. Vice Chairman told Frome Valley Voice about the eventful last few weeks.

WITH a new set of players, management and committee for Frampton Athletic FC the season it has got off to a mixed start on and off the pitch. Pre season the new members took it upon themselves to give the clubhouse a makeover giving it a more modern trendy colour scheme and generally tidying the clubhouse.

Sponsorship has been sought from local businesses but only Morrison’s Yate came good with support even though the club posted 30 letters seeking support and help. The vast majority of the work is now complete at the new club’s expense I’d estimate that we have invested £800 in the club with decorating materials and a new display fridge. We are however a fair way away from the clubhouse being

fully finished.

We have a slightly new set up in personnel and now have only one Saturday team.

This means that we will play 2 Saturday games per month at home. We do our best to keep noise down and respect local residents but we are mindful that parking on match days can be a problem along with the odd football being kicked into gardens (unfortunately the new squad of players doesn’t contain any Lionel Messi’s more your Geoff Twentyman’s safety first approach).

Whilst we maintain the pitch ourselves the sit on mower unfortunately is badly in need of a service as for some reason it does not collect the cut grass which we know isn’t aesthetically pleasing. We generally go over

The clubhouse has been given a makeover the pitch twice so that it is greatly reduced.

The plan is to utilise the facility more, with a couple of Sunday Vets games to generate additional revenue which we can invest in the facilities. The electrics need checking and modernising along with the shower facilities. This would mean one game a month and again cause little problems for the local residents.

The TV and soundbar since recovered nearby in hedging and a local resident Matt kindly supplied a working replacement TV. (Thank you so much). The display fridge remains broken however and other items lost forever meaning the club are still seeking sponsorship and support.

On the pitch it’s been a mixed bag, leaving us currently mid-table. One week we lost to local rival Olveston United in the cup then returned the favour the following week, beating them 5-1 in the league. The 15-0 drubbing of Doddington was the highlight of the season thus far. A comprehensive win and performance by the team.

The end of October saw us lose 3-0 to St Nicks. At times we played some good football in a fairly even match of few chances.

We had a couple of our stronger players absent that didn’t help our cause. A couple of soft goals given away in the second half didn’t help. We have a week off after that defeat, so more decorating is on the cards
