TAX CREDIT CONTRIBUTIONS FUEL COMMUNITY PROGRAMS, SAVE TAXPAYERS MONEY They’re increasingly becoming the fuel behind nonprofit and educational organizations — and one of the best ways to save money on your personal income taxes.

Arizona’s charity and education tax credits have become one of the most important fundraising tools available for non-profits and schools statewide. They also provide taxpayers with an opportunity for a dollar-for-dollar credit on state income taxes — as well as, in many cases, a deduction on federal taxes as well. “It makes financial sense to learn about these credits,” said Cindie Hubiak, president & CEO of the Arizona Society of CPAs. “These tax credits are more valuable than a regular tax deduction because they are a dollar-for-dollar offset, rather than just reducing your net income.” And while they may seem too good to be true, they’re becoming an increasingly important resource for groups across the state. “The Tax Credit program has had a very positive impact on local nonprofits,” said Larry Lytle, first vice president-financial advisor for RBC Wealth Management locally, who sits on a number of nonprofit boards. “We are seeing increases in both the number new donors, the average donation amounts and donor retention. These dollars are turning out to be some of the most cost-efficient money they are raising. The end impact is stronger balance sheets amongst those nonprofits who have active campaigns.”

2017-18 Tax Credit Directory Here’s How Tax Credit Contributions Work Arizona law allows you to receive a dollar-for-dollar credit on the amount of state income tax you pay if you donate to a qualified charity or educational institution in one of four categories: • Arizona Qualified Charities, which is a general category most nonprofits fit in. Contributions are limited to $400 per person or $800 per couple. • Arizona Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organizations, which as the title implies encompasses non-profits who provide foster care services. Contributions have a $500 limit for individuals and a $1,000 limit per couple. • Public Schools, including charter schools, with a $200 per person and $400 per couple limit. • Private School Tuition Organizations, which fund contributions to private schools, which have a $1,089 total limit per person and $2,177 limit per couple. For example, if you give $800 to an Arizona Qualified Charity, your state income tax owed is reduced by $800. And, you can claim that same $800 charitable contribution on your federal taxes, lowering your federal tax bill as well. It’s a net win compared to paying tax dollars to the state, and you directly contribute to these beneficial organizations instead. “Arizona residents have several Arizona charitable tax credits available to them,” said Brenda Blunt, tax partner with Eide Bailly LLP. “Ideally, taxpayers will take advantage of all of them. With the exception of the public school tax credit, the tax savings generally equal the cash outlay to the charity or school. Whether you itemize your charitable contributions or not, these credits generally allow taxpayers to use money that would otherwise go to paying taxes and give it to qualifying schools and charities of their choice.” Arizona law allows for these contributions to be made all the way up to the April 15 tax deadline and still count for the 2017 tax year (contributions made in 2018 would count for your 2018 federal taxes, however). Hubiak said there’s still a learning curve for many people when it comes to tax credit contributions, but more and more people are taking advantage of the credits over time. “There’s still a fair amount of misunderstanding, and some of it is a sense of ‘too good to be true,’” she said. “To some people it doesn’t make sense that an individual can contribute to a nonprofit and get more back than they give.” The State of Arizona requires each organization to meet certain criteria in order to be eligible for the tax credit program. You can learn more about the tax credit program and eligible charities at azdor.gov/TaxCredits.aspx.

UMBRELLA ORGANIZATIONS Some charities under the Arizona Qualified Charity Tax Credit have a slightly different designation as “umbrella organizations.” They are eligible for contributions of $400 per person and $800 per couple as well, but are listed differently on the State of Arizona’s web site. For example, Executive Council Charities, Valley of the Sun United Way and other United Way organizations across the state are considered “umbrella organizations” because they may receive tax credit contributions and distribute them to other nonprofit partners in the community. Locally, Valley of the Sun United Way’s Help The Working Poor Fund is the organization’s tax credit mechanism. United Way uses contributions to fund its own efforts to fight poverty in the community as well as sharing resources with other organizations dealing with homelessness, hunger and other related issues. Executive Council Charities sponsors the Support Arizona Youth program, where they receive tax credit contributions on behalf of qualified charities and match the contributions to increase their impact.

A STEPPING STONE FOUNDATION Kindly allow us to introduce you to one family who recently participated in A Stepping Stone’s preschool with family literacy program – LEAF (Literacy Elevates Arizona Families. When Enrique and his daughter began LEAF, Enrique needed his GED, and wanted his daughter Esperanza to prepare for elementary school. They embarked on a 9-month trek that included preschool, adult education, parenting classes, intergenerational activities, field trips and home visits. They were successful because they worked hard TOGETHER and with A Stepping Stone guiding their way. Today, Enrique is better prepared to find employment, and Esperanza began Kindergarten ready to learn. Both are prepared to contribute back to the community that afforded them a stronger beginning. BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF CENTRAL ARIZONA Big Brothers Big Sisters is not your typical organization. Children realize their potential because of the strong, professionally supported mentoring relationships that change lives for the better. These positive influences have a ripple effect through families, schools and our community. As part the nation’s largest mentoring network, BBBSAZ makes meaningful matches between adult volunteers and children, ages 6 through 18, across Central Arizona. We develop and support positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Children are matched through the traditional communitybased program and through the site-based school programs. By participating in our programs, youth are more confident in their schoolwork performance, able to get along better with their families, less likely to begin using illegal drugs, less likely to begin using alcohol, and less likely to skip school.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER SCOTTSDALE The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (BGCS) serves thousands of youth at nine Clubs located within the communities of Scottsdale, North Phoenix, Fountain Hills, Mesa, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Hualapai Nation. Research shows that the more time youth spend at a Boys & Girls Club, the more likely they are to feel more connected to school and have greater post-secondary aspirations. The door to our kids’ futures is often crowded by temptation and misdirection making it difficult for them to reach their full potential. Inside our doors, youth development professionals and mentors provide guidance, support and encouragement in an enriching and safe environment. Our outcome-based programming assures that success is in reach for all kids and teens who enter our doors, no matter their circumstances.

The Salvation Army is dedicated to fulfilling its mission of “Doing the Most Good” by providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster survivors, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter for the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. Each year we offer free afterschool and summer programming to nearly 300 teens in the metro Phoenix area, the majority of whom come from low-income households. WASTE NOT Waste Not is one of the oldest perishable food rescue programs in the country. For three decades, our sole purpose has been to ensure that our community’s most vulnerable people have access to consistent, life-giving food--food that would otherwise be thrown away. We hold a distinctive position in the efforts to alleviate local hunger. While we are not a food bank, we function uniquely as a “middle-man” agency currently collaborating with more than 200 community partners to alleviate local hunger through our Food Rescue & Delivery Program. Our “same-day” deliveries are made to a network of diverse recipient agency partners, reducing their food costs & enabling them to maximize limited resources for the many services they specialize in providing to their clients in need.

ARIZONA FRIENDS OF FOSTER CHILDREN FOUNDATION More than 30 children will enter foster care in Arizona – today alone. Many times they come with little more than the clothes on their back or what they can carry in a trash bag. They may have never ridden a bicycle or sat down for a family meal. They may be struggling to keep up in school or dreaming of playing a sport. The Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation promotes the selfesteem and enriches the lives of Arizona’s children in foster care by funding social, athletic and educational activities and items that provide them with quality experiences while they live through very difficult circumstances. Help us give children in foster care back their childhood by making a charitable donation that qualifies for the Arizona Foster Care Tax Credit. fosterfriendaz.org
