WELCOME

DEAR FRIENDS, It’s been more than a year that I have had the pleasure of serving as CEO of Valley Leadership. A very exciting 18 months! We’re underway with the “Pivot,” working with passionate alumni and collaborative partners to make Arizona the best it can be. Today, we’re here to celebrate two amazing leaders who represent the best of Arizona: Colleen Jennings-Roggensack and John Graham, and I’m glad you’ve joined us to hear their stories. Colleen and John are shining examples of Valley Leadership’s Principles of Doing: the values that guide our “how” of leadership. They get things done. They collaborate. They lead by answering what’s the right thing to do. Sounds a lot like … the VL Pivot. Valley Leadership’s Pivot, a move toward more intentionally engaging on the big issues facing Arizona, was born and bred with our people, past and present. This strategic shift represents the ideas, passions, directives and input of our alumni. We are doing what our network asked of us: Have greater impact. As our alumni said, “The immense pool of talent, creativity, intelligence and caring that exists in the VL alumni needs to be directed toward a major community effort.”

What’s made this work so rewarding over the past year and half is that our alumni were spot on! We need to be addressing the big issues. And what’s so exciting for the future is that we — our alumni, our partners, our reputation, our collective will — have the means to do that. On the one year anniversary of VL’s new strategic plan, a plan that has allowed more than $1 million in new funding, new strategic partnerships and the opportunity for alumni to get involved on big issues, I want to thank two groups: our board of directors and our alumni. You have sparked this strategic move and have now begun to power it. The Pivot may have only started recently, but it’s been 40 years in the making.

Dave Brown CEO, Valley Leadership

MAN OF THE YEAR JOHN W. GRAHAM CHAIRMAN AND CEO, SUNBELT HOLDINGS

John Graham heads up one of the most established and respected real estate development, management and investment companies in the Southwest. The Sunbelt Holdings chairman and chief executive officer also has far deeper roots in the region. A graduate of Brophy College Preparatory, an institution he credits with instilling in him the importance of being a “Man for Others,” Graham then moved on to Stanford University, where he earned an economics degree before returning to Arizona to make his mark on the area. After honing his skillset with asset management firms including the Koll Company and Coldwell Banker, John signed on with Sunbelt in 1982 before assuming his current position in 1990. Under John’s direction, Sunbelt quickly became a dominant force in real estate activities as well as community affairs, catapulting the business into the forefront of the industry while giving John a platform from which to better serve the community and support the causes and organizations of interest to him. In doing so, he helped champion many of the efforts made by Banner Health and Arizona State University to expand access to quality education and health care services for all state residents, and he also served as a board member on seemingly every major board of directors in the region at some point or another.

Currently, he maintains board affiliations with the ASU Foundation, the Banner Health Foundation, Brophy College Preparatory and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. Additionally, he serves as a board member of Greater Phoenix Leadership, the Heard Museum, the Partnership for Economic Innovation, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Phoenix Symphony Association and the Phoenix Zoo. John has also proved himself an invaluable resource to the Rio Salado Foundation, St. Francis Xavier Jesuit Elementary School and Parish, the Southern Arizona Leadership Council, the StartUp AZ Foundation, Teach for America Phoenix, the Nature Conservancy and the Urban Land Institute. He also serves on the boards of the Valley of the Sun United Way, the Valley of the Sun YMCA, the Wells Fargo Community Advisory Board and Westmarc. John makes it clear that his greatest success in life has been his family, who partners with him in his work to help shape the community. His family includes his wife Kathleen, daughter Annie (and wife Shetha) and sons Justin (and wife Mary) and Will. Few people have their finger as firmly on the pulse of the local business and charitable landscape as John Graham, and far fewer have made contributions to the community that have matched John’s level of impact.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR COLLEEN JENNINGS-ROGGENSACK ASU VICE PRESIDENT FOR CULTURAL AFFAIRS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ASU GAMMAGE

Colleen Jennings-Roggensack has been a key fixture for 42 years in the performing arts at a state, national and global level. As Arizona State University’s Vice President for Cultural Affairs and executive director of ASU Gammage, she takes artistic, fiscal and administrative responsibility for ASU’s Gammage, Kerr and 365 Community Union, Sun Devil Stadium and Wells Fargo Arena. ASU Gammage’s reach spreads to Broadway with the HS Musical Theatre Awards. Nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on the NEA’s National Council on the Arts, Colleen is a Fiesta Bowl Life Director, former board member and Chair of Tempe Tourism, served as Super Bowl XXX Vice Chair Special Events and former board member of Childsplay. She is a member of Phoenix Rotary 100. Colleen so values young people, arts and culture and the economic growth of our community, her work has been lauded by the Greater Phoenix Chamber with the 2017 Impact Business of the Year award and The Arizona Republic named her

one of the individuals that made the greatest impact in the era as part of its 100th-anniversary celebration. Other awards include the 2019 ASU West Pioneer Award for contributions to the African-American community, National Society of Arts and Letters’ Medallion of Merit, Valle del Sol’s Mom of the Year, Positively Powerful Woman Award, Governor’s Arts Award and a 2012 “Trendsetter.” In addition to stints at New Hampshire’s Dartmouth College and Colorado State University, Colleen served as the director of performing arts and professional development at the Western States Arts Federation. Colleen serves as a board member on The Broadway League Board of Governors and has chaired several committees and conferences. She received the Touring Broadway Award. A passionate, ardent champion for the arts, Colleen’s efforts to support and improve the local and national arts scene have made an immeasurable impact on all who are a part of it. A former dancer and choreographer, Colleen is married to Dr. Kurt Roggensack, a volcanologist at Arizona State University, and their daughter, Kelsey, is a graduate of Williams College, All-American swimmer and Fulbright Scholar, recently earned her masterʼs at Harvard.

10 QUESTIONS WITH … SARAH KRAHENBUHL VALLEY LEADERSHIP BOARD PRESIDENT

1 WHAT IS THE PIVOT TOWARD IMPACT PROGRAM? In a move to develop and build the organization for the future, VL staff and board of directors developed the Pivot Toward Impact with the intention of creating a leadership pipeline committed to meaningful results on the most pressing issues facing Arizona. The Pivot includes a comprehensive change in the organization’s programming; deeper engagement of alumni and partners; an increase in intentional partnerships and collaborations; and the creation of Impact Maker Teams that will ultimately exact real change for Arizona’s most vital concerns. A fundamental part of this Pivot is cultivating leadership under what we’re calling our “Principles of Doing” — the guiding ways we think leadership needs to happen in order to solve problems and seize opportunities.

2 WHY IS IT NECESSARY?

Sarah Krahenbuhl, executive director of Phoenix Suns Charities

At Valley Leadership, we’re proud to have among our alumni the decision makers, the doers and the thought leaders making the Valley what it is today and what it will be tomorrow. As the Valley has grown, we’ve discovered that the power of our economy and the strength of our communities will rely not just on leaders doing great work,

VALLEY LEADERSHIP MAN & WOMAN OF THE YEAR | 13

10 QUESTIONS CONTINUED

but also connecting the dots of that leadership, in particular on long-term, systemic issues. The Valley and the state are more complex and we’ll need more deliberate connectivity to have greater impact for the near and long term.

3 HOW DIFFERENT IS THIS FROM VALLEY LEADERSHIP’S MISSION BEFORE THIS? MEANING, HOW IS IT A PIVOT? Not too different, actually. We’re still going to be recruiting the best and brightest into our programming and they’re still going to go on to do great things. It is a strategic pivot that shifts the focus from a leadership program that individuals start and finish, to developing a leadership culture within Arizona that seeks to impact long-term issues.

4 HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY RALLIED AROUND IT? Our alumni and partners have been tremendous. Right now we have more than 75 alumni participating with our first two Impact Teams (health and education) and they’re alumni from across all of our programs: Accelerate, Institute and Youth. Additionally, many local philanthropic partners have collectively agreed to invest in the Pivot via a multiyear collaborative investment providing funding to ramp up for the capacity needed to reach our goals and create sustainability for the future.

5 IS THIS KIND OF COLLABORATIVE PHILANTHROPY UNIQUE? We’re grateful to our philanthropic partners here in the Valley who have committed more than $1 million to this effort over the next

14 | VALLEY LEADERSHIP MAN & WOMAN OF THE YEAR

three years. They all understand the value of doing things together and they’ve been doing it for years. It’s new to Valley Leadership, and that’s what makes our Pivot so special. Let’s seize opportunities together and solve problems collectively. No one group is going to do it solo.

6 WHAT KINDS OF LONG-TERM ISSUES WILL THE PROGRAM ADDRESS? We’ve started out with health and education and eventually will launch other Impact Teams around issues affecting the state as well as those our alumni our passionate about. We’ve begun work on child well-being, arts and culture and job/economy teams and hope to launch some or all of those by the end of the year.

7 WHAT TANGIBLE THINGS CAN WE EXPECT TO COME OUT OF IT? First and foremost, visit ImpactMakerAZ.org, where you’ll see who’s on our Impact Teams and what they’re working to accomplish. Just having a system that can allow for coordinated work (via teams) is a great first step in leveraging and mobilizing our leaders. Then, as the work moves forward, we hope to see actual progress made in the issues the teams are tackling.

8 HOW WILL YOU MEASURE SUCCESS? In a couple of ways. One, are we doing any work? The first two Impact Teams just created “to-do” lists of what they can tactically tackle in opioids, food and nutrition, post-secondary access and pathways to great jobs. We have specific indicators we’ll work toward and make sure we measure our progress along the way. Secondly, are we providing value to the great work already being done in these areas by our strategic

partners? We’re not looking to create new programs or duplicate any work; we’re looking to be helpful to work that’s already in progress and move the short-term and long-term needles.

9 WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT VALLEY LEADERSHIP TODAY? That we’re more than a nine-month leadership program that you start and finish. We’re a vehicle for leadership to grow and have impact where it’s needed most.

10 WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE ORGANIZATION IN THE NEXT 40 YEARS? Our vision is simple: a broad spectrum of Arizonans working together to impact the issues that matter most, setting the example on leadership. As we “pivot” to facilitating that leadership, we hope to see Arizona grow and thrive and set the example of how to get things done.
