Homelessness Prevention program in Frontenac County by Jeff Green

city and provided interim services to residents of South Frontenac after SFCS stopped offering the service last summer. A third, and ultimately successful proposal, was submitted by the Salvation Army Kingston Citadel Community and Family Services department. We are attempting to contact both the Kingston Citadel and the Homelessness Prevention Office of the City of Kingston for information about how the program will operate going forward. The City of Kingston is the consolidated service manager for social programs in Frontenac County. These include: children’s services, daycare services and subsidy, Ontario Works, not-for-profit housing, and homelessness prevention. The city set out a 10-year homelessness prevention plan for Kingston and Frontenac County in 2014, and the 5-year review of that plan was completed in 2019. Surveys to determine the number of people in both the city and county who are either homeless, at risk of homelessness, or living in substandard housing, have been completed every second year in April. The most recent survey, in 2018, determined that there were 61 homeless people in Frontenac County, using the definition of homelessness provided by the Canadian Observatory of Homelessness, which is “those whose accommodation is temporary or lacks security or tenure”.

ver 7 months after Southern Frontenac Community Services (SFCS) pulled out of its agreement with the City of Kingston to provide homelessness prevention services for Frontenac County, a new provider of the service has finally been confirmed. “It was a regrettable decision that we had to make to stop offering this service.” said SFCS Executive Director David Townsend in announcing the pullout on July 15 of last year. “We had no real choice because we could not maintain the proper staffing for the program. It is an important service to the community but we were no longer able to provide it. It was also a drain on our resources as an organisation.” In September, the City of Kingston set out a request for proposal (RFP) for a new provider to provide the service, but no announcement was made about who the successful bidder was. Through the process, the News learned that at least three organisations responded to the RFP, which stipulated that the service must be provided to residents of South, Central and North Frontenac. A bid was submitted by Rural Frontenac Community Services, who had been collaborating with Southern Frontenac Community Services to offer the services in Central and North Frontenac. Another bid was submitted by Home Based Housing, a Kingston agency that provides the service in the

t was the most glaring example yet of the schism that has developed since September between North Frontenac Little Theatre (NFLT) and the Limestone District School Board. The digitally controlled lighting system, which was purchased by the theatre company for $33,000 in 2005, was removed from the cafetorium at Granite Ridge last Wednesday (February 19th). The system included banks of lights on the ceiling in the centre of the room, and lights that were installed on the stage as well, 2 in all. They have been placed in storage and some of them will be used at the Oso Hall in Sharbot lake for the upcoming spring production of an awardwinning original play, Ciara’s Coming Home, by Glenys O’Connell of Henderson. Most of the money for the purchase of the lights came from the Trillium Foundation

grant ($28,100) but the Limestone Board chipped in $500. The lights were installed in the cafetorium at Sharbot Lake High School in 2005, just in time for the NFLT production of Guys and Dolls, and were reinstalled at Granite Ridge Education Centre (GREC) when it opened in 2014. They were a physical symbol of the tight relationship between the theatre company and the school, a relationship that goes back to the founding of the company in 1979, mostly by teachers from what was then the Frontenac District School Board. Here is an excerpt from a Frontenac News article published on April 11, 2005. “The announcement was attended by Don Clark, a member of the Trillium Foundation’s grant review team, MPP Leona Dombrowsky, Central Frontenac Mayor Bill MacDonald, and Sharbot Lake High School Principal Tom Taylor,

along with the drama class at the school. “The relationship between the Little Theatre and the High School was highlighted. The High School has hosted the productions over the years, and students from the school have been involved with many of the productions, both on stage and behind the scenes. Tom Taylor also pointed out that the new lighting system will be set up in the High School and will be available for use by the High School as well.” Last September, in line with ministry directives, the board began charging rental fees to NFLT for rehearsal on weeknights, and productions on weeknights and weekends. Until then, NFLT had free use of the facility. The NFLT fall production of “A Christmas Story” went up in early December at GREC.

Trail for sale?

THE FRONTENAC NEWS

rontenac County is hoping to take over the K&P trail between Sharbot Lake and the North Frontenac border. The trail section is owned by Central Frontenac Township. The county has plans to upgrade the trail to make it as accessible as the 55km K&P trail section that was completed last fall between the county border with the City of Kingston and Sharbot Lake. The K&P line north of Sharbot Lake was purchased by Oso Township sometime in the 1980’s. Central Frontenac Mayor (and Frontenac County Warden for 2020) Frances Smith remembers the purchase because she was the clerk for Oso Township at the time. “As I recall, it was Marathon Realty, the real estate arm of Bell Canada, who owned it. I think they told us to name our price, since they didn’t want it anymore. We offered something like $5,000, and it was a done deal. But I’m not exactly sure about the date or the cost. It was a long time ago,” she said. The trail has been used by snowmobiles, ATV’s, walkers, runners, cross country skiers, and cyclists, ever since, and a number of people access their

seasonal and permanent dwellings from it. The trail has many interesting features. It straddles four waterways (Sharbot Lake, Black Lake, Little Round Lake and Bolton Creek) runs through a culvert under Hwy. 7, passes major rock cuts, some swampland and thick woods, before reaching Clarendon Road and the only station on the old K&P line that is still standing. It is maintained in a limited fashion by the township under a contract with the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance (EOTA), and is groomed by the Snow Road Snowmobile Club in the winter time. “We haven’t really invested much in it. When issues are brought to us, about trees over the trail or other maintenance matters, we call EOTA and they make arrangements to deal with the problem,” said Smith. “Other than that, we have basically left it alone since we bought it.” The trail floods sometimes in the spring, and where it passes over open, swampy land, it is pretty rough, but passable. All of these trail maintenance issues are familiar to the Economic Development deThinking of selling your waterfront property? partment at Frontenac Have it seen by 35,000+ people County, which has worked at the Cottage Life Show. for years to forge a conKrishan Nathan, ASA tinuous trail to Sharbot TEAM LEADER, SALES REPRESENTATIVE Lake from the border with the City of Kingston. summer, but they need ownership of that section of trail in order to work on it. Central Frontenac Township inherited the trail when it absorbed Oso township in 1998. At their meeting last Wednesday (February 20), Frontenac County approved a motion, put forward by staff requesting that the trail north of Sharbot Lake be conveyed to them in order to enable them to work on it. “With construction planned for later this year on the Frontenac K&P Trail from the Village of Sharbot Lake to Clarendon Station in 2020, it is staff recommendation that ownership of these lands be transferred from the Township of Central Frontenac to the County of Frontenac. As the primary investor in the infrastructure, it is in the County’s best interest to own, maintain and manage the improved asset to ensure long-term sustainability of the infrastructure,” said the staff report accompanying the motion.

It will be up to Central Frontenac Council to decide if they want to convey the trail to the county. “Should the Township of Central Frontenac respond affirmative to this request, a detailed review of the properties will be undertaken prior to a legal agreement and conveyance.” In a phone interview Frances Smith said that the matter has not yet been raised at the Central Frontenac Council table and she cannot speak for Council, but she did not see, on the face of it, any reason for her council to raise any major objections. “The county wants to Improve it and make it more accessible to our residents and visitors alike, and take over responsibility for maintenance.” Frontenac County has budgeted money to upgrade for the 14km. section between the trailhead in Sharbot Lake and Clarendon Station, this year, so the conveyance needs to be completed shortly.

Lions offer to fix Sharbot Lake gazebo, flower bed

he Sharbot Lake & District Lions Club is offering to spruce up the gazebo across from the Township office in Sharbot Lake. In a letter that was accepted for information at Tuesday’s regular Central Frontenac Council meeting, Lions secretary Bill Pyle said: “re: the gazebo across from the Township office seems to be in need of some TLC. “With Council’s permission, the Lions are willing to take a close look in the spring and see what is needed to spruce it up . . . the Lions would do any needed minor repairs and paint or stain the gazebo. We understand that there is a neglected flower bed beside it and we would see what we could do to restore it as well.” Pyle went on to say that if there ap-

pears to be any major structural difficulties, they would consult with Council before proceeding and invited members of Council to join them in inspecting the gazebo and flower bed. Dep. Mayor Tom Dewey volunteered to go and Mayor Frances Smith pointed out that since she is a Lion, she’d probably be there too. Council passed a resolution to express thanks and appreciation to the Lions but didn’t give its permission. Part of the resolution was for staff to contact the Lions to coordinate and confirm the scope of the repairs and bring a report back to Council. Coun. Bill MacDonald observed that “there were no fire calls anywhere in Central Frontenac in January and asked Fire Chief Jamie Riddell if he could offer SINCE 1970

an explanation. “I like to give credit where it’s due,” Riddell said. “It’s a credit to our volunteers who go out and do fire prevention and door-to-door smoke alarms.” There were however, eight medical calls, four vehicle accidents and one carbon monoxide call in January. Council passed a resolution to finalize an agreement with Rideau Valley Conservation Authority on behalf of Mississippi Rideau Septic System Office to complete the septic re-inspections contemplated under Bylaw 2020-04 for the 2020 Year. Council also received for information the annual report on Council remuneration in 2019 for information. Mayor Frances Smith received $24,450.15 plus $900 in per diem and

In my stint in the OLA, comparing your false accusations, to reality, the exposure of a mindset bent on attempting to falsely accuse someone of hypocrisy rings hollow compared to my experiences as an OLA member. I need not mention these events were legal. We never trespassed on private property, violated any injunctions, nor in any way violated statutes as current lawless busybodies are doing across "Canuckistan." A police check of our events ensured there was no problem and at times they even assisted in our efforts to redirect traffic in our LAWFUL events. Our events did not in any way interfere with the best interests of the nation nor cause layoffs, or monetary loss of the citizenry nor violate the law in any way, certainly not in my experience with the OLA as an active member. demonstrate total ignorance as you have embraced, of the OLA and its history. You ignore the real elected band leaders who have made agreements with the pipeline officials and do not want troublemakers and unsolicited help who are threatening the massive benefits the pipeline negotiators have made with the Wet'suwet'en in sealed deals. The OLA in a different manner acted on requests of people suffering injustice, and did not stick their noses in where they were not wanted. I doubt you know the meaning of hypocrisy, and I bet the editor had to change your spelling of it to make it correct. You need to do more research before straining at gnats and in process, demonstrate your malice towards people who have been elected several times over by the majority in the riding. It is you who is the malcontent, the intolerant type who makes up stuff as he goes along for want of having any morsel of accuracy, he could use to discredit an elected representative speaking for most of the people.

Lorie made lots of coffee and cake and it’s a good thing she did because it was packed. It was also the morning of the film about the 1959 Lanark fire from the Lanark & District Historical Society. The fire started on Monday, June 15 at noon, in the Sash and Door building, from a spark. There were high winds that day and it did not take long to spread to 33-35 buildings. Fire trucks from all districts came to help. I think there were 9 fire trucks there. After 5 hours the whole business section was on the ground. But luckily there were no casualties. By the next day everyone was already working to put Lanark back together again. An excellent film.

Hopefully you will be recuperated and seeing better through your beautiful eyes soon, Anne! • I had an interesting chat with Ardoch resident, Annemarie Schonauer, last week. Did you know that she was working in downtown Toronto at an insurance company when the CN Tower was being built in 1974? I couldn’t believe she was old enough to be working yet! She said she watched it every day get taller and when the top was on the ground, you could go and sign your name on it so your name would be on the top of the tower. Then she watched as it was put on with a helicopter. How cool is that?! A little piece of our province’s history remembered right here in Ardoch! She was also sharing with me how she had signed her name on the Berlin Wall in Germany before it was torn down and that somebody might have a rock in their home with her signature from the wall. It would be so neat if somebody had that rock here in North Frontenac! • Spring has sprung at Riverhill Farm & Fine Foods, with over 7500 taps in, it sounds like they are ready for the warm weather and the sap to run, WOW! • If you would like to head to Napanee on Monday, March 2nd, The Land O’Lakes Community Services Bus Transportation is organizing their next trip for residents. They will be stopping at Walmart, No Frills, Giant Tiger, Country Traditions and enjoying lunch at Chuck’s Roadhouse! There are volunteer drivers available for drop off and pick up. For more info, please contact Kate Turl at (613) 849-8804 or 1 (877) 679-6636 or email her at lolcsbus@gmail.com • If you see Donna Gemmill on March 1st or Dawn McNab on March 2nd at the North of 7 restaurant or store, please remember to wish them a very happy birthday! Both gals would probably enjoy a few birthday bumps, if you have the time! • And last, but certainly not least; a big thank you to Blanch Ellenberger, who certainly made our week! When I picked up the mail and there was a letter inside and a wonderful picture of my father in law, Doug Watkins (top of page 5), from 1948 that her late husband Walter had taken. I just had to share this pic with all of you, what a wonderful memory! Thank you, Blanch, for sharing!

• At 3.5 years of age, Lillian Law, won biggest fish in the childrens' tournament on Sydenham Lake on Feb 16, as she caught her first ice fishing pike at just over 2lbs. Lillian’s grandpa, Doug Law of Sydenham, was helping her. She said “Pa something’s pulling my rod,” and handed it to him. He said “Lillian, come here we’ll real it in slow”. As the fish pulled more Lillian asked, “Pa, is it big?” Out came the fish and Lillian let out a scream as she stepped back. • He’s dearly missed and has been missing over a week now, From Mill street by the post office. This seems to be an ongoing concern. We have many pedestrians and pets, not to mention other vehicles on roads for this to be a safe thing happening. Please if you are the driver of any of vehicles who could you please respect the speed limit. Even if you are a passenger, perhaps remind your driver to slow down. Or as citizens maybe we need to bring it to police attention enough that they do something about it before someone gets injured or even worse.

Sydenham Country Cafe - casual comfort food with a twist

Sarah Atkinson in front of her cafe

S

by Jeff Green

arah Atkinson (owner/manager/head chef) of the Sydenham Country Café, is a ball of energy, especially when she is talking about the café. The café has been open for less than a month and it already has an established clientele and serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and grab and go options. It is establishing itself as a bake shop, and does catering as well. A a take out window has just been set up at the side of the building for those who need that major coffee-shop option. When I visited last week, mid morning, the breakfast crowd had come and gone, but the café was still half full, with mid-morning coffee drinkers, and some of the lunch sandwiches were just being prepared for the display case. Sarah worked in restaurants as a teenager and trained in kitchens. She went to teacher’s college with a view towards teaching cooking, but one thing led to another and she ended up spending 25 years in education, most of it running her

own private school in Kingston. Recently she has been making and selling baked goods, doing some catering and painting, from her home base north of Sydenham. She has seen an opportunity for a café in Sydenham ever since Hillside, which was located in the same location as the Sydenham Country Café on Rutledge Road just east of the village. “I even looked at properties in the village, trying to see what is available. Then my husband told me that this property had been sold, so I came up and the new owner was here, looking around. I asked him what he was planning to do with this unit and he said he was hoping to lease it to a food business. I had already drawn up what I wanted so we looked at my drawings, and we basically made a deal right then and there,” she said. That was in the early fall, and it took a few months to prepare the space, get everything up and running and get all the equipment in place. “I had hoped to be open earlier but we opened when we could and the response

has been very positive so far.” The menu at the Sydenham Country Café can be described as casual comfort food with a twist. The twist comes from some of the flavour enhancements that Sarah has developed over the years, such as her bacon marmalade that is carefully used on some of the sandwiches that are available at the café. The cooks at the café prepare a daily soup and entrée special, and Sarah likes to make sure that some favourites are always available. “We try to make sure that our Lasagne and Chicken Pot Pie are always available, for eat-in or takeout. They are always in demand” she said. In addition to these classic comfort foods, the café also serves the contemporary equivalent, in the form of the Santa Fe and Asian Protein Bowls, available with chicken, or beans for vegetarians. Among the specialty sandwiches, there is Montreal smoked meat, Turkey and Swiss, and 4 cheese gourmet grilled cheese (available with bacon or pulled

pork) The coffee at the Café comes from North Roast Coffee in Kingston. Their popular Confederation blend and the darker Sumatran are ready to serve. And they have a breakfast sandwich? The Sydenham Country Café version is served on an English muffin or multi-grain round, with real cheddar and a hint of what Sarah calls her ‘zippy cheese sauce’. Their toasted western is another breakfast sandwich option. From 7am – 9am the breakfast window is open, serving sandwiches, coffee, and muffins. Their menu is available online at countrycafe.ca. “We have gotten off to a really good start,” Sarah said, “and I think we will only have more available for people as we get into the spring and summer season.

The café is open on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 7am – 3pm, Wednesday to Friday from 7am – 7pm, and Saturdays from 9am -3pm. The hours will be extended for the spring and summer seasons.

Little Black Book of Scams outlines the sort of things to watch out for I

f you’re a senior in Frontenac County, chances are you’ve gotten one of those phone calls. You know the ones — somebody’s going to make you rich or the “bank” needs some information or heaven forbid, if you don’t tell the caller what they want to know, you’re going to jail. North Frontenac Coun. Fred Perry’s gotten them too, as well as questionable emails asking for his banking information and such. Perry’s concerned, because although you don’t have to be a senior to get scammed, Frontenac County’s on track to be more than 50 per cent seniors before too long, and seniors are a huge target. “I found it at the car dealership,” Perry said. “I thought it would be good information for seniors.” So, he asked Clerk Tara Mieske to see if she could get some to have in the Township office.

Beck’s radio-friendly poppy rock pub friendly as well by Craig Bakay harlottetown’s Rachel Beck is a former teacher who is obviously an attentive student herself. Area music fans might remember her playing Blue Skies a couple of years ago as The Beck Sisters with her sister Amie but last Saturday night with her band Alicia Toner (fiddle/vocals), Kerine Bouchard (cello/vocals), Robin Ettles (bass) and Nick Coltas-Clarke (drums), she was a more pop-rock person than the folksy Beck Sisters. Beck played an assortment of her own songs, including most of her latest CD Stronger Than You Know as well as some of her older work like Warrior (the video of which features one of her daughters). And listening to her music, you can’t help feeling there’s a little bit of Carole King and/or Joni Mitchell in there. And there is. “There’s a bit of throwback in there,” she said. “The songs have a poppy beat and they’re short (2-3-minute average) — more radio-friendly than a lot of music these days.”

C

Beck acknowledged the King and Mitchell influences, along with Annie Lennox, Fleetwood Mac and Sarah McLachlan but there’s also another one. “My dad used to play in bands around military bases,” she said. “He was big into rock’n’roll, Clapton and Rolling Stones. “So I used to listen to what he listened to.” Just a bit of trivia for the fans — the people she jumps off a bridge with in the video Hearts On Fire aren’t musicians. “They teacher friends of mine,” she said. “And we’re all wearing wet suits under our clothes. “That water was like 4 degrees.” Toner opened the show with her guitarplayer fiancee Greg Gale and showed she can not only belt out a song with the best of them, she’s one kick-ass fiddle player as well. Beck and her band made the Sharbot Lake stop in between performances at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and Hamilton. She’s currently on tour all over Ontario before heading out west and then back home to the Maritimes.

Volunteers Bring Back Swans M any folks in eastern Ontario have seen very huge white birds either flying or on the water. Those really huge white birds are Trumpeter Swans. The last Trumpeter in Ontario was shot at Long Point in 1932. In 1988 Harry Lumsden, took on recovery of Trumpeters as a retirement project. You might have known Harry when he worked for Lands and Forests in Tweed. Trumpeters were not wiped out in B.C. so 23 eggs were obtained and hatched

in Ontario. Harry Lumsden found 23 volunteers who agreed to shelter and feed those hatchlings in eastern Ontario until they matured. From this effort 540 Trumpeters were released. The Ontario Trumpeter Swan Restoration Group was formed (ww.trumpeterswansociety.org/file) and by 2010, there were about 1000 Trumpeters in the wilds of eastern Ontario. Some swans have nested and raised young. We commonly see the grayish young in late summer.

Trumpeter Swans are the largest swans in the world with wingspans reaching 8 feet. Trumpeters may be the heaviest bird capable of flight. They build huge nests, up to 3 metres across. Often they nest on top of old beaver lodges. Trumpeter Swans do not migrate south. They flock in open water on the lower Great Lakes and on open rivers. On Lake Ontario they are in mixed flocks that include Tundra Swans and Mute Swans. Tundra Swans are native but nest only in the north. We see them as migrants. They are distinguished from the Trumpeters by a variable yellow patch between the bill and the eye and slightly smaller size. Mute Swans are invasive, non-natives that have escaped from swan flocks in urban areas that were imported from Europe. They

have a red and black or yellow bill. They have bred widely and their population is increasing rapidly. They compete with Trumpeter Swans for nesting habitat. Trumpeter Swans are grand birds to see, especially when they take off and spread those huge wings over you. They can be seen on the Salmon River and on McGowan's Lake. At summer's end, large numbers occur on the Crowe River near Marmora, on Consecon Lake in Prince Edward County, in Lake Ontario off Kingston and in lesser numbers in breeding habitat in the inland rivers andlakeland across eastern Ontario. Thanks to many volunteers and Harry Lumsden our swans are back as one of our most valuable natural riches.

After dinner on Saturday ,some entertainers played for another couple of hours. The piano player came from Kingston and joined us for both events. She said she loves to drive. Thanks to all for helping to clean up.

Final casting call: Ciara’s Coming Home T

here's still time for hesitant but budding actors to strut their stuff in North Frontenac Little Theatre's spring production. Although several roles have been allocated, acting opportunities are still available for male and female actors aged between 20 to 35 in the Irish-set, one act play, Ciara's Coming Home, to be staged in late April and early May. "Some of the remaining roles are relatively undemanding with few lines to learn and would present a really nice opportunity for young men and women who've prevaricated about acting, to get their feet wet in drama," said director, Adrian O'Connnell. Production crews are already working on lights and sets for the comedy to be staged at Sharbot Lake's Oso Hall and rehearsals are set to get underway starting Tuesday, March 3rd. The play will be preceded by a dramatic prelude exploring the Irish emigrant experience in narrative, song and story.

Bedford history remembered at Glendower Hall T

here was a lot of reminiscing going on Saturday at Glendower Hall as the Bedford Historical Research Centre’s annual open house. “All people are interested in things, it’s just what are they interested in,” said Paul Younge, who was back for another year with his vast collection of farmrelated publications.

“All that old stuff is really interesting,” said Coun. Pat Barr. “Like Gramma Barr’s bread and butter pickles recipe. “If you just read it, you’d think you sliced the onions before you peeled them.” She said they have a lot of people wanting to donate things, which they appreciate, but “you really need to put it in something.

“We did have a lady organizing the death notices but she died.” And, she thinks the area was a lot more colourful in the ’50s. “We had a lot of bootleggers in the area then,” she said. Perhaps one of the more interesting people for visitors to reminisce with on this day was Gord Sly, president of the Frontenac County Schools Museum and author of Good Old School Days. “There were more than 100 one-room schools in the County at one time,” he said. “And the museum probably has something from just about all of them.” He said that legally, kids couldn’t walk more than three miles to school — which accounts for why there were so many of them. “Most of them were in

gether” to create the museum and preserve the memories and memorabilia. Sly had photos from Salem School (Bedford #1) and the Oak Flats school from 1904.

One of the more interesting items on display was an old honey pail. “That’s what the kids used for lunchboxes,” he said. “They also used old lard pails.

LIVING HERE DRIVE SLOW IN THE SNOW • BE NICE ON THE ICE: Give yourself twice the space between vehicles and pedestrians. Stopping distance on ice is double that of a dry road • GO SLOW IN THE SNOW: Slow down and drive according to weather conditions, not the speed limit • IT’S NOT A RACE, GIVE PLOW SPACE: Snow plows are extra wide and can create clouds of snow – both of which reduce visibility and increase the risk of collision. It’s best to wait for the plow to pull over before you pass. • Learn more at www.snowhow.ca LOAD RESTRICTIONS – MARCH 1, 2020 TO MAY 1, 2020 In accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O.1990. Bantam Flyers all tied up heading to Dundalk this coming weekend

he Frontenac Bantam Flyers find themselves all tied up with the Dundalk Storm at a win apiece heading to Dundalk next weekend for the third and fourth games of their six-point total series OMHA Playdowns semi-final. On Saturday at Frontenac Arena, it was all Flyers, as they downed the visiting Storm 4-0 on goals by Aaron Doak Anorae Hugheson, Andy Campbell and Carter Street. Sunday was a different story, with Dundalk coming out on top 2-1. But the story of Sunday’s game was penalties, as in the Flyers playing much of the game short-handed. The first period was scoreless and went quite quickly. The Flyers took an interference penalty midway through the period and then were assessed another as the period was about to end. The crowd didn’t seem to agree with either call but then home crowds seldom do. In the second, just as the interference penalty expired, the Flyers were penalized for too many men on the ice — a

questionable call where the replacement stepped on the ice just as the penalized player was returning to the bench. Technically a penalty perhaps, but not something you see called very often at any level. Just as that penalty was expiring, the Flyers were called for boarding and the crowd was howling. That was followed a bit later with offsetting penalties and shortly after that, the Flyers finally got their first power play of the game. But one rush later, that got evened up with Carter Street being assessed a major for tripping on what certainly appeared to be a legitimate hip check that sent the Dundalk player to the ice, where he lay for a minute or two, which brought a visit from the trainer. With the Flyers suffering a rare moment of disarray, Dundalk opened the scoring. But with 1:22 left in the second, the Flyers actually got another power play, which Anorae Hugheson capitalized on to tie the score at 1-1. In the third, Frontenac was again

short-handed but goalie Lucas Steele stood on his head to keep his net clear, stopping two point-bland breakaways and adding a couple of beauty saves until, at 4:11 with the teams playing four skaters a side, Dundalk scored on a wicked shot and it was 2-1. With 1:28 left, the Flyers pulled Steele and despite two excellent chances, couldn’t put one in. The game ended with a bit of a scuffle in front of the Dundalk net. “It’s tough to score goals when you play three-quarters of the game with somebody in the penalty box,” said coach Chris Nicholson. “But I thought the boys played well and played hard despite spending too much time in the penalty box. “Our goalie, Lucas Steele kept us in this one though.” That he did and it could very well be argued that the officiating was questionable most of the time. But, Nicholson is optimistic they can put this behind them and perhaps win it in Dundalk.

“We were extremely confident going into this weekend,” Nicholson said. “And we’re still confident going into next weekend. “We can totally play with this team.” The next bantam game (if necessary) at Frontenac Arena is scheduled for March 7 at 4:30 p.m. The winners of this semi will go on to face the winners of the BCH Ice DogsSouth Huron Sabres in the final. The other Frontenac team still alive in the playdowns, the Peewee Flyers, open up their semi-final series against the Shelburne Wolves this coming Friday in Shelburne and return to Frontenac Arena March 6 at 3 p.m.
