Local Fire Departments Helping Battle Centennial Lake Wildfire

Burn bans in place

The nationwide wildfire alert has come pretty close to Frontenac and L&A Counties.

The smell of smoke in the air, a blood red sun in the sky, and an eerie greyness that is more like the light during an eclipse, has enveloped the region this week, fallout from wildfires near and far.

A fire that has spread to about 50 hectares on Centennial Lake has triggered a mutual response from fire departments from all three land-based Frontenac townships as well as Addington Highlands and the City of Kingston.

Centennial Lake flows into Schooner Lake, which is part of the Frontenac Parklands network of campsites.

“There have been no evacuation orders in North Frontenac at this time,” said Cory Klatt, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the township, “We are monitoring the situation but hopefully the fire will not come this way.”

He added that there is currently only one family registered at a Frontenac Parklands site on Schooner Lake, and that township staff were headed there on Monday, to let them know what the situation is.

North Frontenac and Addington Highlands both put on total fire bans as of noon on Monday,

“I heard about the fire last night,” said North Frontenac Fire Chief Eric Korhonen on Monday, “and through our mutual aid agreement we have sent our marine unit, 200 feet of hose, 2 forestry hoses, and 4 firefighters who are already up there. The other fire services have sent what they have available as well.”

South Frontenac Interim Fire Chief Alex Bennett said that 6 firefighters from his department were deployed to the site on Monday, along with some equipment. They remained all day but were not needed on Tuesday.

John Kemp is fed up, and doesn’t mind telling everyone and anyone about it. Even his local council.

Kemp, who lives on Otter Lake with his wife Tracey Mallen, spoke to the News on Monday in advance of making a presentation to South Frontenac Council on Tuesday evening (June 6).

He moved to Otter Lake about ten years ago to join Tracey at the home where she has lived since 2005.

Over the past dozen years, the couple have been living next to short term renters. For the first ten years, it was the property to the east of theirs on the lake that was rented out. The property was rented out through the VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner) web service.

“During that time, everything and everything happened to us from next door, short of having our life threatened,” he said.

Damage was done to their property on several occasions, he said. One time, they went to where there was a woman sitting on their dock.

“When we told her that it was not the dock that came with the rental property, she said ‘I like this dock better and turned away’.

Another time they came home to find their dock totally under water, and their neighbour on the other side told them that a group of renters had been horsing around on the dock while they were gone.

“Finally, the guy on the west side of us, who had built their home themselves, couldn’t take it any more and they sold their property,” said Kemp.

Central Frontenac Township also put on a total fire ban on Monday, and at noon on Tuesday, South Frontenac Township upgraded the Level 1 Fire Ban that had been in place since Friday (June 2), to a total fire ban.

Crews from townships in Renfrew County are also responding.

“We are hoping the fire can be contained and will not head our way, but we are certainly keeping an eye on it,” said Cory Klatt, “there are a lot of trees down from last year’s Derecho that could get involved if a wildfire came our way. We urge people to follow the burn ban.”

According to a CBC report, the fire was reported shortly after 5:30 pm on Sunday and had spread to 50 hectares as of noon on Monday.

Fire Chief Korhonen said the fire was moving at a rate of about 3 metres per minute on Sunday Night but that rate had slowed by Monday morning.

An evacuation order affecting Black Mountain Estates, Little Bay Lane, Snider's Tent and Trailer Park and Aird’s Lake Road, in the Griffith area, went in place on Monday.

The hamlets of Denbigh/Vennachar in Addington Highlands, and Griffith in Greater Madawaska are about equidistant from the fire, and Plevna in North Frontenac is the closest population centre in North Frontenac.

On Tuesday morning, while the skies worsened over much of Frontenac County, the news from Centennial Lake had improved, with suggestions that the fire had been kept to a steady or shrinking radius.

The weather forecast remained grim, however, calling for sun and smoke for the next 48 hours. There was a chance of rain in the forecast, but only 30% into Tuesday evening, and the next forecasted rain does not come until Friday.

Environment Canada has also put out an air quality warning for Eastern Ontario.

The property to the east sold as well, to a family who live there on a full-time basis and have become close neighbours.

The owner of the property to the west, however, sold it in the fall of 2022, realising a substantial profit through the COVID housing boom.

Soon after the sale, Kemp went to meet his new neighbour.

“I approached and said welcome to the neighborhood, and said there are great neighbours on the lake and if he needed anything he could just ask. He asked me if I was from Toronto. I said no, I’m from here. He just turned around and walked away. I haven’t seen him again.”

Since then, the property, which is a three-bedroom house, formerly built and occupied by a family of four, has been listed on AirBnB as a waterfront destination for up to 12 people.

John Kemp’s presentation to South Frontenac Council outlined a series of incidents and reports to the OPP, the township, and AirBnB, starting on November 5, 2022. In the first incident, the couple were in Kingston and received a text from a neighbour asking if they were having a party because of the noise coming from their end of the lake.

When they got home, they heard some very loud yelling coming from all over the property, saw 9 cars, 4 dogs, and an unknown number of people.

Incidents have followed since then. They had made reports to AirBnB on at least 15 occasions over what is listed on the AirBnb site, including pictures of their dock, as if it was part of the rental property, and about the fact that the house can not safely hold 12 people, to no avail.

Craig Middleton, a first time council member on Central Frontenac Council representing Ward 3 (Oso), tendered his resignation from council last week.

According to Central Frontenac Chief Administrative Officer Cathy MacMunn, Middleton’s resignation came into effect on Monday, May 29.

In a subsequent phone interview, Mayor Frances Smith said that Middleton sent a letter by email to the township on that day.

“Basically, what he said was that it turned out that council is not for him,” Smith said. Middleton has a long history of community involvement. Most recently, he was integrally involved in the

installation of a concrete pad for the rink in Sharbot Lake, as part of a large volunteer effort to get the rink built in time for the winter of 2022/23.

Middleton was elected in the municipal election last fall in Oso district, along with another new councillor, Susan Irwin.

Susan Irwin received the most votes in the ward, 413, followed by Middleton with 400, Duncan McGregor finished 3rd with 268 votes, and Bill MacDonald was 4th with 239 votes.

Central Frontenac Council met on Wednesday, May 31, in a previously arranged, special in camera meeting, to discuss items covered by solicitor-client privilege, and at that meeting they also accepted Middleton’s resignation, and discussed how to fill his position.

The municipal act provides for a number of options to fill a council vacancy, including an election.

Mayor Smith said that the cost of a byelection is substantial, and “the residents already went through an election last fall and would not appreciate having another vote.”

CAO Cathy MacMunn prepared a report outlining all of Council’s options, and Council opted for offering the position to the candidate who finished third in Oso District, Duncan McGregor.

MacMunn said that she would call McGregor that very evening, to offer the position and some time to decide if he was willing to serve on council for the next 3.5 years. If he turns down the offer, MacMunn said she will offer up the position to Bill MacDonald, who finished in 4th place.

“What happens if both of them say no,” asked Councillor Nicki Gowdy.

“Then we will have another discussion at council,” said Smith.

Council next meets on June 13, and will be prepared to welcome the new member at that time.

The News reached out to Duncan McGregor via email on Monday to see if he has decided to join council or not, but we had not heard back as of press time on Tuesday. ■

South Frontenac Official Plan – Finish Line Finally In Sight

After a process that has spanned over 2 years, the final statutory public meeting for the South Frontenac Official Plan took place at the Sydenham Town Hall in the format of a council meeting.

The meeting was similar in many ways to open houses that were held in Verona and Sunbury in recent weeks, but the written and oral comments that were made in case, by council members and the public, were formally received by the township, which is relevant if any appeal process is launched once the plan is adopted.

The meeting began with the same staff and consultant presentations about the details of the plan as took place in Verona and Sunbury, led off by Director of Development Services Brad Wright.

Comments by council members followed.

Deputy Mayor Sleeth raised two issues. He said “the proposal in Bill 97 to allow 3 severances in prime ag lands is something that I question because I wonder what that is doing to the idea of protecting agricultural lands in our township.”

Our healthcare system has been pushed to the brink. This is an emergency, but it's not an accident. The Ford government is systematically underfunding our healthcare system so they can sell off services to the highest bidder. The Perth Emergency Room was shut down for weeks last summer. It happened elsewhere in Ontario, for even longer periods. Beds in hallways for days on end is now the new norm. I know, because I had to drive my husband who was getting his Stage 4 cancer diagnosis to further away for his important CT scan and had to return twice to get it done. This is shameful, and there is no true need for it to happen after many, many decades of continuous, high quality public services in the province, when this would have been impossible to even contemplate. We have Doug Ford to not thank-- the only needs which created this horrendous, ongoing situation are his political goals! Even though he has now rammed through controversial Bill 60 — the legislation that will sell off hospital services to private, and forprofit companies-- we should not simply 'roll over' and give up. We need hospital CEOs across the province to stand up to him now. A recent poll showed an overwhelming majority of Ontarians don't want an expansion of private, for-profit health care in their communities. There is no room for for-profit healthcare at Perth & Smiths Falls Hospital. I'm calling on its CEO, Michael Cohen, to publicly speak out against Ford's plan for for-profit healthcare and call for reinvestment in public healthcare for all. Otherwise, we will lose quality staff and vital services to profits. Taxpayers always pay more for privatization!

His second point related to the prescribed 0.8 hectare (2 acre) lot size, which is the standard in the township. He thinks that in hamlets like Sydenham, Verona and Inverary, the minimum lot size needs to be smaller in order for housing development to be focussed in those locations, as the plan projects.

“The way our hamlets are set up already it is going to make it very difficult to develop on 2 acre lots,” he said.

Mayor Vandewal echoed Sleeth's comments on two acre lots, but he did not limit his critique to the hamlet areas.

“I don't know why we have 2 acres as the standard size for lot creation,” he said. “As long as a lot can accommodate everything, a house and septic system, and satisfies all of our concerns about runoff and everything else, why does it need to be 2 acres, why not one and a half or some other size? Why do we need a whole process every time someone wants a smaller lot?”

He also said that he has found “the official plan process somewhat frustrating. We don't have the input that we would like to have, as local politicians, because of provincial control over what we can and can't do, and the province says one thing one day, and something else the next day. Unless we can do something about lot size, I'm having difficulty seeing how I can support this.”

“As of October, 2022, there were 700 listings, As of December there were 835, and as of May 31 there were over 1000.”

He told Council that “strict regulation is critical to protect South Frontenac and South Frontenac residents.”

Short term rentals regulation was raised as an issue during the 2022 election, and in February the township sought public opinion on the matter.

A number of members of the public raised some specific concerns.

Nancy Myers said that while the 9 trout sensitive lakes in the township have special protections from development, she wanted to know what protections there are for other lakes.

Jerri Jerreatt asked if the township owned any land in Inverary that could be used to create a village-like, walkable atmosphere like she sees in Sydenham and Verona.

Daryl Neve from the Dog and Cranberry Lakes Association, said that while she likes a lot of what she sees in the document, it is lacking any mention of the need for a mandatory septic inspection program to ensure older systems don't create environmental concerns.

Roger Romero, also of Inverary, said the plan needs some measurable targets in order to determine if it is achieving its goals over time.

There was also concern raised by one landowner whose land is set to be designated as prime agricultural land, even though his family has owned the land for over 25 years, has never farmed the land and does not intend to, but will be facing restrictions. Another person asked about a backyard chickens bylaw.

Mayor Vandewal answered the question about backyard chickens, saying it is not

“A bylaw is not sufficient, in my view, because it is too hard to enforce. A regulatory framework is the only way to permit short term rentals while protecting the interest of South Frontenac residents. And it is the residents who support this township, the local businesses, the community organisations, everything,” he said. ■

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in specific areas of the body. It is considered a complex condition because its exact cause is not fully understood, and there is no specific diagnostic test for it.

The primary symptom of fibromyalgia is chronic pain that affects various parts of the body, including the muscles, joints, and soft tissues. The pain is often described as a dull ache, and it may be accompanied by stiffness. The severity of pain can vary from person to person and may fluctuate over time.

In addition to pain, individuals with fibromyalgia often experience other symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties (referred to as "fibro fog"), headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and heightened sensitivity to touch, light, and sound. These symptoms can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life, causing physical, mental, and emotional distress.

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not known, but researchers believe it involves a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Some theories suggest that abnormalities in the central nervous system, such as increased sensitivity to pain signals, may play a role in the development of fibromyalgia.

Since there is no cure for fibromyalgia, treatment focuses on managing the symptoms and improving overall quality of life. This often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including a combination of medication, exercise, stress management techniques, and lifestyle changes. Support from healthcare professionals, as well as family and friends, can also be beneficial in coping with the challenges posed by fibromyalgia.

SFCSC Golf Tournament

This past weekend a group of 30 teams (4 per team) headed off to the Rivendell Golf Club in Verona to support Southern Frontenac Community Services (SFCS) programming in the 13th annual fundraising tournament. This course is set in the Canadian Shield. With three sets of tees for various skill levels, it can accommodate all level of players, and offers a pro shop, kitchen, and venue for large group gatherings. The teams consisted of both men and women attending the 13th annual Charity Golf Tournament in support of the SFCSC programs. The tournament itself is one of the largest fundraising events for the organization and offers a challenging course, prizes, and gourmet dinner after a relaxing afternoon of golf with friends.

As June is Seniors month in Ontario, is seems appropriate that this coincides the same month as the Great Canadian Giving Challenge both promoting programs and funding for organizations supporting seniors. Some of these programs include Meals on Wheels, transportation, foot care, adult day program, hospice palliative care, food bank, and social and rec activities to name but a few. The expansion (#buildwithgrace) is a much-needed project so the SFCSC can keep up with the demand that increases annually for their services to care for our ageing local population, and for them to age with grace in their homes (#agewithgrace). Every online donation this month earns a chance for the SFCSC to win $20,000.00.

The event raised over $9000 in sponsorship dollars, as 116 players looped their way along the 18-hole course for a good cause, and the final tally was $12,000. Some opted for the additional ‘putting challenge’ (raised $470.00) to test their skills and win a prize, and everyone enjoyed a hot sunny afternoon amongst other golf enthusiasts in a beautiful country club setting. Kudos to those that played well, and we look forward to seeing you next year on June 7, 2024. ■

Festival Of Small Halls To Cap A Bluesy Roots Music Season

On Wednesday, June 28, the enterprising folks at the Snow Road Hall are presenting a show by Australian acoustic blues guitarist Lloyd Spiegel, for only $15. Spiegel will also be performing at the Winnipeg Blues Festival, Bluesfest in Ottawa and Festiblues Montreal.

“This is a once in a lifetime occurrence,” said Johanna Cumberbirch, of the Snow Road Music Committee, who are presenting the show.

There are two ways to get tickets for the Lloyd Spiegel show, either by going to the Friday morning coffee gathering and buying them in person, or by calling Mike at 613278-1853.

Summer has not yet officially arrived, but music lovers are already looking to the fall season, as the Festival of Small Halls was announced this week. Among the festival highlights are concerts by the Alberta “Counterfeit Blues” man Corb Lund at the McDonalds Corners Agricultural Hall on October 7.

On the same night, Harry Manx will be playing a show at the Sydenham Legion.

The Harry Manx show is his only appearance at the festival, but music fans can opt for the Harry Manx show, and still see Corb Lund, but they will have to travel. Lund is also playing at the Manotick United Church on October 5, and at the Joshua Bate Centre in Athens on October 6.

Purpose and Effect of the Proposed Zoning By-law

Amendment

The purpose is to undertake a housekeeping amendment to the Zoning By-law that will provide administrative updates for clarification. The full amendment package should be reviewed for all the details and is available as per the instructions below. The following is a brief summary of the proposed changes:

• The inclusion of new definitions and amendments to some existing definitions for the purposes of clarification and grammatical modification.

• Amendments to several general provisions for the purposes of clarification and grammatical correction (e.g., parking, boathouses, docks, waterfront structures, sleep cabins, lofts-above-a-garage, wetlands, pits and quarries).

• Technical corrections to the land use/zoning schedule (map).

• The removal of detailed provisions related to animal control, as these provisions are now regulated by the Animal Control By-Law.

• Adding “Day Nursey (Licensed)” and “Day Nursery (Private)” as permitted uses in several zones. Adding “Loft-Above-A-Garage” and “Sleep Cabin” as permitted uses in the Hamlet, Rural, and Limited Service Rural Zones.

Adding “Park Model Trailer” as a permitted use in the Recreational Commercial Zone and noting that the minimum lot area for park model trailers is the same as rental cabins.

• Adding provisions to the Environmental Protection Zone that don’t permit Live-Aboard or Float Homes and that limits the amount of time that vessels can be anchored or moored.

Patty passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family in her 65th year. Beloved and devoted wife to Donald Middleton and Loving and devoted Mother to Amanda (Adam) Neadow, Annette Middleton (David Mulville). Nanny to Jason, Dawson, Olivia, Carter, who were Nanny’s pride and joy. A special bonus Nanny to Jacob & Alexis Mulville. Loving sister and best friend to Angela (Jim) Brown, Sister of Paul Morrow, Shelley Morrow, and niece of Marilyn Clark (nee Morrow). Predeceased by her parents Donald & Janice Morrow (nee Barkley), and sister Carol-Lee Pemberton.

Patty will be remembered for her love and dedication to her family, friends, and community. Patty enjoyed all things her Girls and Grandchildren were involved in and served her community with various roles and responsibilities. She enjoyed volunteering at St. Andrews Anglican Church and spent many years as a devoted member of Hollywood Legion Branch #425, starting as member of the Ladies Auxiliary, serving many years on the Executive Committee, as 1st Vice, and President. Patty also served on several Zone committees of the Legion.

Patty will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by many nieces, nephews, greatnieces, great-nephews, family, and friends.

The panel made it clear, as had already been communicated to bank clients, that the branch is slated for closure and there is no turning back.

At one point there was a heated moment when an audience member claimed that BMO is a public company and should act in such a way, and a bank official claimed that BMO is a private entity.

The audience member pointed out that BMO stock is publicly traded on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges, and the official said, yes, in that sense BMO is a public company.

The panelists indicated that the decision “was years in the making”. The building that housed the branch has been listed for sale with the realtor Rogers and Trainor for $199,000.

The listing includes a for sale and for lease component, and says there is an “opportunity to leave ATM in place for additional income stream” and lists October 1st as the availability date.”

The News has received a credible report that there are restrictions on the potential uses of that space, and we are attempting to confirm what those restrictions are.

The meeting ended quietly, with plenty of cookies and water remaining unclaimed.

“We, the valued customers, got nothing as a takeaway,” one of the bank’s customers told the News after the meeting. ■

SF Official Plan

Senior Planner Christine Woods took notes during the question period, and provided some preliminary responses to some of the questions.

“As far as Bill 97, and lot creation on Prime Agricultural Lands, I heard Premier Ford on the radio saying 'oops, we'd better rethink that' after all of the farm organisations have come out against it, so we'll see where that goes,” she said.

Woods said that the boundaries for Prime Agricultural lands are subject to provincial guidelines and can extend beyond areas with Class 1, 2, and 3 soil conditions, and that the prime ag parcels need to be 250 hectares in size (617 acres) although the shape can vary.

As for the lot size of 2 acres, she said that was based on a principle of protecting the water table.

“To create smaller lots, hydro-geological studies are necessary as a protective measure, but that is an option for people wanting to create them.”

She also said that the expectation is that planning staff will report back on progress over time, and that some of the other questions will take more time to answer.

After a couple of other comments from members of the public, Councillor Randy Ruttan said that, in his view, Council and Staff have done as good a job on the Official Plan as they could, given provincial constraints.

Former Councillor Fran Willis made what turned out to be the final comment from the public, by saying, “I remember a professor of mine once saying 'it is like the province is the parent and the municipalities are the child'. It is that sort of relationship and I share your concerns.”

Brad Wright said that staff will take the comments into account and will further consult with the township's Heritage and Lake Ecosystems committees before returning with a final draft of the plan for township approval in the fall. Once approved by the township, it will go before Frontenac County Council for final approval.

Mayor Vandewal reiterated that he has reservations and is not necessarily going to vote in favour of the Official Plan, but none of the other members of council have indicatedpublicly that they intend to oppose it. Approval requires a simple majority among the 9 member council. ■

Treasures in the Attic

Over a hundred items, artifacts and family heirlooms were brought to South Frontenac Museum Society’s first-ever “Treasures in the Attic” at Verona Lions’ Hall last Saturday. Four local antique dealers: two active, two retired, were on hand to provide information. Some came to watch; most brought treasures to show and learn about. A large handstitched ‘sampler,’ probably stitched by a child, had been handed down in the same family since the mid-1800’s. Another person brought in an exquisite Art Nouveau lamp of brass and marble.

Southeastern Ontario Screaming Eagles U17 Tier 2 Girls Fastpitch

As summer is heating up so is the newly established Southeastern Ontario Screaming Eagles U17 Tier 2 Girls Fastpitch team, composed of talented athletes from Kingston, Mallorytown, Sydenham, Harrowsmith, Verona and Sharbot Lake

Recognizing that the area had some very talented players who wanted to play competitive fastpitch, a tryout was held last fall in Sydenham.

This past weekend the girls were 2-2 in tournament play in Cobourg, with games against Clarington, Port Perry, Peterborough, and host Cobourg. The team will be off to another tournament later this month in Ajax where they will play teams from Mississauga, Whitby, London, Waterloo. The girls will be striving to qualify for Provincial championships in August.

“They are aware of the commitment and are supportive of one another on and off the field, each player knows they play an important role within the team’ says Nicholas Burnet, Head Coach.

Some of the girls have played on teams outside of the area but said they feel a sense of pride playing closer to home, which also allows family and friends to watch their regular season games in a local women’s fastpitch league.

Canada Day in South Frontenac

Celebrate Canada Day in South Frontenac! There will be so much to do on July 1st, including activities at Glendower Hall, Centennial Park, Storrington Lions Club, and Sydenham Point Park.

This year, South Frontenac will host one spectacular firework show at The Point Park in Sydenham at 9:45 pm to cap off the day’s celebrations (rain date of July 2nd). To help everyone get to the show, there will be shuttle buses taking residents to and from the fireworks show from 10 different locations across the township. The Frontenac Farmers Market is now open until October. The market has a new look, day, and time! Come out on Fridays from 3-7 pm at Centennial Park in Harrowsmith under the new Grand Pavilion to shop for fresh local farm products.

Effective June 6, 2023 a Total Fire Ban is in effect in the Township of South Frontenac. A total fire ban means no open air burning of any kind, including cooking fires, brush fires, camping fires, and fireworks. The ban does not apply to cooking appliances with a mechanical shutoff (such as a propane barbeque). We’ll continue to monitor conditions—please see our website and social media for updates.

It’s construction season! Be sure to watch this section or engagefrontenac.ca in the coming months for updates on construction projects around the Township as we work to improve our roads.

• Crack Sealing Work: The Township will be making crack sealing repairs on these roads June 6-16: Rutledge Road, Harrowsmith Road, Yarker Road, Wilton Road, Bellrock Road and Perth Road. Watch for crews and expect some delays. Thanks for your cooperation.

• Alton Road West – Road reconstruction will begin May 2023 until September 2023. Major road works are being carried out by Township Forces. No closure required.

• Battersea Road – Road reconstruction work remains on schedule and will continue through to July 31. Work is being completed by Len Corcoran Excavating Ltd. No closure required.

• North Shore Road – Road construction has started between Leland Road and Convery Lane with an anticipated end date of September 2023. Road works are being carried out by Township Forces. No closure required.

Stories at the Point returns to Sydenham

Connect with your community and enjoy the great outdoors. The Kingston Frontenac Public Library and Rural Frontenac Community Services EarlyON are bringing back their bi-weekly storytime, Stories at the Point, this June. Wilderness Betty starts the fun on June 9 with a nature-infused folk concert kickoff at Sydenham Point (4410 Point Road, Sydenham) at 10:30 a.m.

But that's just the beginning! From June to September, families can come together for interactive events that include stories, songs, movement, and more on June 23, July 7, July 21, August 4, August 18 and September 1. Register at keyon.ca to guarantee a spot at these exciting events, and don't forget to bring blankets and sunscreen to make the most of the weather.

On July 21, join a special StoryWalk® that combines reading with the great outdoors. Participants can read the bilingual picture book Treasure by Mireille Messier while exploring the scenic trail. One of the biggest challenges for Pickleball is indoor play as we know the Canadian winters are unforgiving with wind, sleet, and snow. But the further north you live, drive, or work, the harder it becomes to find somewhere safe to play. Many locations are still playing on rough pavement.

This past week residents, and all volunteers, of Sharbot Lake headed out to the courts on Garrett Street and spent the day resurfacing/sealing the asphalt and then diligently relining the 4 courts so they could play outside. Over the winter months, they were able to rent a space at the GREC gym. Players had to patiently wait their turn as they rotated courts with 18 people coming out during the evening sessions, and a lengthy waitlist on the roster.

A determined group of folks take it upon themselves to fundraise, work, and coordinate the play, including the labour for the court restorations.

The Oso Recreation Committee helped out by donating funds towards new nets, line paint, resurfacing materials, and storage bin. Council supported pickleball play at this location through it’s donation of the port-o-potty, and grass maintenance surrounding the courts. The group is hopeful that Council will come to see how lucrative

(for the local economy) and positive this initiative is in supporting their residents mental and physical wellbeing, with little to no cost to manage this evolving sport.

Regular play has resumed at the Garrett courts (0900-1200hrs and some evenings), and planned ‘learn to play’ sessions will be held on Thursdays -June 8th, 15th and 22nd @6:30 PM, and Fridays 9th, 16th, and 23rd @0900 hrs. Equipment will be provided for those interested

in coming to try it out!

Let’s hope as the need for courts continues to increase that discussions can move forward towards a permanent, safe, solution to meet everyone’s goals. Thank you to the volunteers who are continuing to work towards a safe and accessible place to play for everyone. ■
