Our experienced advisors know what works in each region and how to achieve specialist crop success. With support from colleagues at Frontier, growers have access to a wide range of resources whether focusing on a single element of sporting or farming needs, or the whole game management, stewardship, livestock, greening and arable picture. This includes advice tailored to your specific requirements, formal recommendations for and supply of fertiliser and crop protection products, and the soil improvement service, Soil Life. Working with our Frontier colleagues, Kings can advise on and supply:
••Soil testing and nutrient advice ••Granular lime ••Fertiliser ••Crop protection products and foliar feeds.
SOIL
Good soil health depends on a number of factors. A varied and dynamic soil biota is important as microbes interact SOIL IMPROVEMENT SERVICE with crop roots, increasing the crop’s ability to take up nutrients and water. To sustain this microbial activity requires organic matter. Many soils have seen a dip in organic matter levels over a number of years and turning to cover crops to help redress the balance is becoming more and more popular with growers. Soil density is also key. With increasingly large and heavy machinery in operation, the risks of compaction inevitably rise, which can lead to waterlogging in wet weather and consequently reduce microbial activity. As well as holding nutrients and water, organic matter helps the soil to resist compaction. Frontier’s Soil Life report is a valuable tool in identifying and improving soil health and vitality and sustainably increasing crop yields. An analysis of the physical, biological and chemical status of the soil is taken, from which a report showing the soil’s vitality and overall condition is produced. With expert guidance from an advisor, this report is used to inform and develop a bespoke action plan to help soils fulfil their potential.

The Wellshead Shoot on Exmoor.
INTEGRATED APPROACH CASE STUDY The integrated approach has produced impressive results for Wellshead Estate in Somerset. Having joined the estate as head keeper in spring 2016, Rob Eggins turned to Kings for his game cover needs. With 85 acres of difficult, exposed sites, many of which had been planted with game cover for several years, Mr Eggins required a full suite of products to establish successful plots, as well as ongoing expert advice. With a lack of previous rotation and all the sites fixed on hilltops above some impressive valleys, Mr Eggins worked with Richard Barnes to design a rotational system that would account for the difficult growing conditions and ensure weed control options were available across the board. The system also needed to fit the various needs of holding and driving both pheasants and partridges. A full soil analysis of each plot identified the anticipated shortage of lime and key nutrients. Working with crop nutrition and agronomy experts from Frontier, the extended team identified the key lime and fertiliser requirements along with a herbicide strategy to support a rotation of cereal and brassica crops.
For a complex project like Wellshead, this additional technical input from Frontier colleagues was invaluable.
“Being able to access everything through Richard made my life much easier,” states Mr Eggins. “I’d call him and within a couple of days I had everything I needed. I send him pictures of my crops from my phone too and get answers back straight away. That advice makes everything very, very easy.” FACTS and BASIS qualified advisors provided the full fertiliser and crop protection recommendations and products were supplied and delivered from Frontier stores in the South of England. Essentially a ‘one stop shop’ for game cover success, this approach ensured simplicity for Mr Eggins and his contractor. With ongoing support from the collective team throughout the spring and summer, crops received the right inputs at the right time. Mr Eggins is delighted with the impressive range of game cover crops established as a result: “We’re very pleased. Early in the season, many of the brassica crops had

Delivering innovation
To bring growers the best quality products and leading advice, Kings’ commitment to extensive ongoing research ensures that together we are at the forefront of developments in management techniques and seed. With ongoing challenges from shifting weather patterns and a greater focus on soil and water, use of resources needs to be optimised across the board. Our continuous trials work ensures we address these challenges in everything we do to find innovative, sustainable solutions.
Herbicide screening Keeping crops weed free is key to success and Kings’ dedicated crop protection screening trials at Coldstream, in the Scottish Borders, has provided valuable data to inform our advice. This is an independent trial which assesses products from a range of manufacturers across game cover, green cover and stewardship crops. As active ingredients continue to be reviewed and with limited new chemistry entering the market, this work is critical.
Among Kings’ trials network is a valuable project run in conjunction with the James Hutton Institute at Balruddery, near Dundee. Now in its second of three years, the fully replicated trial is providing a detailed, scientific approach to add to our existing knowledge of soil health and the management requirements and associated benefits of green cover crops. Supported by Dr Blair McKenzie, a leading soil scientist from the Institute’s department of Environmental and Biochemical Sciences, a rotational trial was devised to grow three winters of green cover followed by three crops of spring barley on the same field. A selection of green covers has been grown in the trial field along with areas of stubble and cultivated land. Along with soil structure assessments, data is being gathered on nutrient run off, soil erosion, soil invertebrate populations and grain yield and quality.
Demonstrating best practice Kings’ presence at Frontier’s 24 3D thinking sites across the UK gives growers the opportunity to see the development of various game cover, conservation, green cover and forage crops alongside mainstream combinable crops throughout the year. Events are held regularly at these sites and can be arranged by appointment too; visit Frontier’s events page or speak to your local contact for more information. This network of trials and demonstration sites is enhanced further by additional sites across the UK, ranging from informal field scale comparisons to formal demonstrations on working farms from Fife to Buckinghamshire. These include numerous focuses, from evaluating the optimum grey partridge habitat to displaying how sporting, farming and conservation interests can be combined to benefit everyone involved.

Our replicated field scale green cover trials run in conjunction with the James Hutton Institute are bringing valuable results to growers.
Dr Blair McKenzie comments: “Alan Johnson (Kings technical advisor in Scotland) and I had both been attending local events and it became clear that everyone could see possibilities for cover crops, but that there were a lot of unanswered questions. “With industry interest in sustainable soil management and attention from the Scottish government too, starting a project to find some of those answers seemed logical and Kings was keen to invest in this. “Alan has the background information and practical understanding of cover crops and what’s happened elsewhere in the UK and he can suggest what we should try and what might and might not work. His expertise is invaluable. “Bringing all the parties together has enabled us to have the scale, proper science and farmer engagement to produce valuable results that will make a difference to the future of farming.” Results from harvest 2016 were encouraging and the data produced has given the team more to work on during the second harvest period. Alan is working closely with Dr McKenzie to collate the findings and translate them into useful advice for growers. “Working with the James Hutton Institute is a really valuable addition to Kings’ trials work,” he says. “Our collaboration at the site is pioneering and will be beneficial for the whole industry as well as expanding Kings’ cutting edge advice to growers on how to get the best possible results from their land.”

COMPLIANCE
FARM MANAGEMENT SERVICES
Growers are obliged to farm responsibly and protect our landscapes. This is reinforced by a raft of legislation and regulation enforced by the Rural Payments Agency. Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) payments are directly linked to compliance, so it’s vital to understand the many elements involved. Failure to comply with legislation can lead to significant fines. A small breach could incur penalties of 3-5% of all payments received for that year and further breaches or intentional non compliance could cost up to 15%. Repeated breaches could increase the fine to 100% of BPS payments.
Kings ongoing herbicide screening supports growers in meeting their stewardship requirements.
Farm Assurance Schemes
MyCompliance can help avoid these fines by making sure your business is fully compliant. A qualified advisor will prepare you for RPA inspection by providing guidance and completing paperwork in the following areas:
Where growers have signed up to a farm assurance scheme, such as Red Tractor or Scottish Quality Cereals, MyCompliance advisors can help you to meet the high standards required by completing an Integrated Pest Management Plan, a Rodenticide Plan, risk assessments for farms, grain stores and crop contamination and by creating a policy for farm waste and soil protection.
Cross Compliance
Countryside Stewardship
For growers to meet Cross Compliance rules, the following information must be recorded. A MyCompliance advisor will provide detailed, farm specific advice on all aspects of Cross Compliance and produce an annual Nutrient Management Plan and Manure Management Plan.
MyCompliance offers a full package for growers wishing to enter a Countryside Stewardship scheme, ranging from advice on suitable options for your farming system and relevant seed mixes to completing and submitting the application to Natural England.
• Four stage N plan for each crop in each field • Application of N fertilisers and justification for any
Health and safety
applications above recommendations
• N Max for crops with an N Max limit • Crop yield per field to justify future use of N • Manure import amounts, dates and source • Risk map of farm showing no spread zones (required even if not in an NVZ area), along with location and period of use of temporary field heaps
• Manure spreading dates and application rates • Farm livestock manure N limit calculation • Livestock numbers for the previous calendar year • Calculation of N produced by livestock on farm • Slurry/manure storage calculation • Any slurry/manure exports.
A safe working environment is essential and strict regulations are enforced by law. MyCompliance advisors compile an HSE risk assessment for your farm business. What’s new? From 1 January 2017, land parcels of 2ha or less next to watercourses will have to comply with the need to protect those watercourses against pollution and run-off from agricultural sources, by maintaining buffer strips (GAEC1). Growers must not cultivate or apply fertilisers or pesticides and must take all reasonable steps to maintain a green cover:
• For all land within 2 metres of the centre of a watercourse or field ditch
• For 1 metre from the edge of the watercourse or field ditch on the landward side of the top of the bank.

Making a difference with our partners
As well as our commitment to delivering the best possible seed mixtures and advice, Kings places great value on working with industry partners. Working with and supporting others has always been key to our work and our relationships across the farming, sporting and conservation world continue to benefit both businesses and wildlife. The results of these collaborations reach far and wide, leading to progressive ideas and concepts being delivered on farms and estates across the UK and Europe. The following case studies help to illustrate Kings’ diversity of influence and how positive initiatives are implemented on-farm.
Waitrose Farming Partnership The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s (GWCT) Allerton Project at Loddington, Leicestershire, remains a valuable platform for knowledge transfer across a wide range of farmland issues. With over 3000 visitors and farmland bird numbers continuing to rise in 2016, it’s a pioneering project. The 2016 count showed songbird numbers are now 90% higher than in 1992, while numbers in the wider countryside remain relatively constant. Kings works closely with the project to support the delivery of best practice to land managers, advisors and industry stakeholders across the farming, stewardship and sporting sectors. As well as providing seed and technical support, Kings collaborates with several Trust partners to help deliver specific initiatives. One of these is the Waitrose Farming Partnership (WFP), which works alongside farmers, growers and other suppliers to ensure the best standards in quality, safety, environment and animal welfare across its supply chain. This includes Waitrose’s own inspections and farm assurance schemes. With a dedicated range of suppliers for eggs, milk, meat and poultry, Waitrose ensures each supply chain has a sustainable farming system that considers and delivers for the farmed environment. To progress this commitment, agricultural manager for Waitrose, Duncan Sinclair approached Jim Egan, head of training and development at the Allerton Project, to explore how growers could be supported to develop their on-farm habitats.
8
As part of the project, Kings developed a range of seed mixtures to deliver for farmland birds and pollinators and help growers to protect soil and water on their farms. The team also provides training and ongoing support to growers.
One stop shop “Working together has provided WFP growers a one stop shop in terms of products and advice on establishing and growing the crops,” Duncan explains. “Workshops and open days have given growers the opportunity to go and see the options for themselves and to share their knowledge and experience with other farmers. Kings’ technical advice at these workshops and on-farm sessions has been valuable and their regional advisors act as a local point of contact which has really helped with national coverage too.”
Grower’s view Bill Playford is Waitrose supply chain fieldsman for Dalehead Foods in Suffolk. In 2016, several farmers became involved

in the project after being encouraged to allocate areas of unproductive land to on-farm habitat. “The nectar flower mixture has been popular and has encouraged a lot of bees in particular,” explains Bill. “As well as becoming more attractive to wildlife, the initiative has made a striking visual difference; nice purple areas of phacelia for example add a lot of colour to our pig fields. “Kings’ advisors are very helpful and we look forward to our farmers becoming even more involved in 2017.”
Making a difference Kings’ Richard Barnes comments, “It’s a pleasure working with the WFP and GWCT on this initiative. The Allerton Project has a great range of habitats already in place that make it the perfect hub for demonstrating best practice and as it’s an ‘everyday’ farm, growers appreciate the challenges the team face. We always say that if a visitor can leave with one valuable take home message, we’ve made a positive difference.” “Working with Kings and Waitrose has been really interesting,” Jim agrees. “It’s great to work with a supply chain that has a positive attitude and really appreciates how productive farming and good environmental management go hand in hand.”
Operation Pollinator The partnership between Syngenta, GWCT and CFE continues to flourish as the delivery of Syngenta’s Operation Pollinator initiative brings positive benefits to farmland habitats and businesses alike. The innovative project is improving the fortunes of farmland birds and pollinators and also raising awareness of their needs among growers across the UK and Europe. Over 1,250 hectares of farmland have been planted with the Annual Wild Flower Mix or Bees ‘n’ Seeds Mix over the last three years, which calculations show has an environmental benefit across more than 50,000ha. Feedback from growers has been positive, with many looking to increase the area planted on their farms.
Growing interest “Changes in environmental stewardship and commodity prices made 2016 a tougher year for growers, but they still clearly saw value in Operation Pollinator which continues to deliver results,” says Syngenta’s environmental manager, Belinda Bailey. “The initiative is building and evolving year on year as more growers and industry partners look to get involved.” “Kings is instrumental as one of these partners, providing seed and technical support to growers as well as maintaining trial plots of the mixes at demonstration sites for growers to see first-hand before committing.”
Meeting wildlife needs The two seed mixtures were developed by Kings to deliver simple but valuable outcomes on-farm while meeting Ecological Focus Area requirements. The mixes work in harmony to cover the two key needs of farmland wildlife: pollen and nectar in the spring/summer and wild bird seed in winter. • The Operation Pollinator Annual Wild Flower Mix is designed to be planted adjacent to oilseed rape crops to provide early spring flowering and act as a bridge after the rape crop has ended its peak flowering. • The Operation Pollinator Bees ‘n’ Seeds Mix has been specifically designed to offer a prolonged source of late season pollen and nectar for insects, followed by an ample food supply and shelter for birds through the winter.
The Allerton Project Bees ‘n’ Seeds Mix has been extremely successful for both purposes at GWCT’s Allerton Project, Leics and has fitted in effectively with the farming system. “For the pollinators and birds, the benefits have been clear to see, with masses of activity in the quickly established habitat,” reports GWCT’s
head of farming, Phil Jarvis. “The great splash of autumn colour was welcoming to the thousands of visitors who come to view the work of the Allerton Project too.”
Establishment The Bees ‘n’ Seeds mix is simple to establish, with the 20kg/ha seed rate working well through the drill compared to the low seed rates of some conservation mixes. A small amount of N when sowing encourages quick establishment and repeating three weeks later can help the brassica components to grow away from any potential flea beetle damage. While the drilling date is flexible, care must be taken to find the optimum window for the particular year. Drilling too late is good for pollinators but time becomes short for seed to mature in time for the farmland birds. A graminicide can also be used should couch grass or other grass weeds encroach from field margins. Herbicide use may be subject to environmental scheme provisos. “I’ve been really pleased with how it’s developed through the season,” Phil says. “I was able to plant the mix under the fallow land option of the farm’s EFA, where it has provided a great habitat for a far wider range of wildlife. The testament has been the sheer diversity of insects and birds that we have seen benefitting from the area.”

Stewardship update for England & Scotland by Neil Harris
Neil Harris
Alan Johnson
At the mention of stewardship, many growers may think of Countryside Stewardship or the outgoing environmental stewardship schemes. These are excellent schemes that growers are encouraged to adopt, but are not the only options to benefit farm and shoot management as well as the environment.
Cross Compliance The basic foundation of the farming support system, Cross Compliance is a set of rules that must be adhered to for farmers to claim their annual Basic Payment. Elements of particular interest to game managers include the need to maintain a two metre boundary from the centre of hedges and a one metre boundary from the top of ditch banks to the worked area of land. For those with a wild game interest, this boundary protects the hedge and is critical in keeping the cultivator out of the hedge bottoms that provide valuable areas of nesting cover.
Ecological Focus Areas (EFAs) EFAs are mandatory for farmers with over 15ha of arable land. These areas can include hedgerows, buffer strips, green cover crops and fallow land and encourage the planting of legume crops, like peas or beans. The fallow option is of particular interest for land managers. Although understood by many to mean bare land, this option allows the establishment of wild bird seed mixtures, which include crops such as triticale, linseed and millet, and nectar flower mixes containing plants like phacelia and red clover. Perennial crops such as chicory can also be included. As well as meeting farm needs, this option can therefore be an excellent asset to the shoot, improving habitat to hold more game and even creating new drives. The fallow option also offers the opportunity to introduce margins around the farm that can help with general shoot and farm management as well as benefitting wildlife, as fallow margins can be used for access. Growers are turning to green cover crops, which have immense benefits for the land as well as fulfilling EFA requirements. Crops such as oil radish and oats are sown after harvest and destroyed before spring planting to retain nutrients, improve soil structure and boost soil vitality.
10
Autumn and spring annual cultivated margins managed under an HLS agreement.
Countryside Stewardship (CS) After some initial concerns and funding uncertainties after the Brexit vote, Countryside Stewardship is becoming increasingly popular with growers; applications in 2016 were up almost 45% on the previous year. The scheme is split into Mid Tier, which is similar to Entry Level Stewardship (ELS) and applies to the broadest range of growers, and Higher Tier, similar to Higher Level Stewardship (HLS), which meets specific habitat or regional requirements. Both tiers are competitive and acceptance is subject to application scoring by Natural England. CS has a lot to offer for growers new to stewardship and to those nearing the end of their ELS or HLS schemes. We recommend applicants consider the Wild Pollinator and Farm Wildlife package, a bundle of management options put together to benefit pollinators, farmland birds and other wildlife, such as brown hare and rare arable plants. The options available fulfil nearly all requirements for creating perfect wild and reared game habitat while also receiving a payment, so it’s an attractive offer. With application numbers on the rise, seeking expert advice before applying is highly recommended to maximise your chances of success.

The integrated approach With so much to gain, we advise growers to take time to understand the options. Working with an advisor with expert knowledge on farm, stewardship and sporting crops and scenarios will put you in a strong position to ensure that the decisions made are beneficial for everyone involved.
Scheme or no scheme? As ELS and HLS schemes end, don’t be tempted to remove existing features that are no longer funded and put the land back into arable cropping. Instead, these features can be transferred into a new CS agreement, or at least used as EFA features. CS is a valuable additional income stream for growers, providing a regular annual payment in an otherwise volatile farming sector. Poor ground can be taken out of production and farmed more profitably with agri-environment options and with carefully selected options, shooting interests can be enhanced too. Maintaining habitat is crucial; if farmland habitat levels decline further, the required EFA area may be increased to address the issue. Whether or not a scheme is in place, it’s important to contribute where possible.

Stewardship opportunities in Scotland The Agri-Environment Climate Scheme (AECS) promotes land management practices which protect and enhance Scotland’s natural heritage, improve water quality, manage flood risk and mitigate and adapt to climate change. Between 2015 and 2020, £350 million has been made available to fund a range of activities that help to maintain and enhance the rich and varied natural environment. Two key points are:
• To deliver the 2020 Challenge for Scotland’s Biodiversity by supporting appropriate management for vulnerable
and iconic species and habitats, strengthening ecological networks, controlling invasive non-native species and enhancing the condition of protected nature sites
• To meet obligations to improve water quality under the EU Water Framework Directive by reducing diffuse pollution. A wide range of management options and capital items is available under the AECS. Rules and management requirements apply to each which must be followed over the course of the agreement contract.

With an ever-increasing focus on the farmed environment, quality of habitat and the importance of pollinators, conservation crops have a key role to play. Growing wildflower plots and margins, nectar mixes and wild bird seed mixes can satisfy Ecological Focus Area requirements, agri-environment schemes in England and Scotland, voluntary measures for The Campaign for the Farmed Environment and other conservation projects too. Selecting the most appropriate conservation crops to meet scheme requirements is essential. Kings provides expert advice on seed selection and ongoing crop management, including nutrition and agronomy, so that crops can achieve their full potential. We work closely with growers to maximise the benefit of conservation crops both to the environment and for the farm business. In an ever changing and volatile farming sector, conservation crops can provide a reliable income stream through stewardship schemes as well as enhancing sporting interests and meeting greening requirements. They can also provide the habitats required for many farmland birds as well as dramatically increasing the number of pollinating invertebrates on farm, which in turn can lead to positive yield returns for many commercial crops.
Conservation crops can also provide excellent PR for farming with visually striking mixes, such as nectar mixes and flower rich plots and strips, located in areas visible to the public, for example adjacent to footpaths. Countryside Stewardship and the Agri-Environment Climate Scheme in Scotland provide significantly enhanced payment rates for conservation crops compared with previous schemes, so the opportunity to integrate these crops into the farming system has never been more attractive. With a range of quality seed and a team of expert technical advisors across England and Scotland offering bespoke support and advice, Kings has everything you need to achieve your conservation goals.

AUTUMN SOWN WILD BIRD SEED MIXTURES
Feed the birds Supplementary feeding supports farmland birds during their most vulnerable time of year and is a financially attractive option under both new and old stewardship schemes too. Agreement holders feed the birds on tracks, margins and/or wild bird seed plots during the December to April period known as the hungry gap, to help birds survive and enter spring in good condition for breeding despite natural food sources running out. Used in conjunction with the wild/winter bird seed stewardship options, growers can qualify for funding by feeding a balanced mixture of wheat and other specialist small seeds and keep records of seeds purchased and a feeding diary. Care must be taken when sourcing seeds to prevent the unwanted introduction and spreading of species such as barnyard grass and thorn apple that can come in with unscreened “feed spec” products. Kings supplies complete mixtures to suit your needs as well as pre mixtures to mix with farm saved wheat, all using seed grade millet and high quality feed components.
Corn Bunting
Holding game birds from summer through to the end of a shoot season can be challenging and with milder autumns and winters. To help hold birds where and when they are needed, Kings has created two special holding mixtures. Fed on the ground or in hoppers, these mixtures have been formulated to provide superior nutritional content and entertainment for game birds. Kibbled maize with or without the known game bird attractant, aniseed, is also available.
Supplementary feeding is a vital lifeline for farmland birds in winter
Seed is available in bulk bags and 20-25kg bags at competitive prices and mixes can be adapted to suit individual needs.

With stewardship requirements, the Basic Payment Scheme and an ever-changing countryside, the days of simply using straight maize and straight kale for game cover are long gone. Shooting businesses are now under more pressure to perform from smaller areas and with increased consistency, so while these crops still have a role to play, other mixtures and conservation crops are needed to complement them and bring more value to the business. Kings’ extensive range of quality game cover crops includes treated seed to provide the foundations for a successful shoot, as well as mixtures and bespoke options that meet both sporting needs and stewardship requirements. This seed is supported by technical advice from a team with vast shoot management and gamekeeping experience. Expert advice is key to crop success. Our advisors help to select the right species for your individual situation, suited to factors such as location, soil type and purpose. Where possible we recommend creating a mosaic of habitat with a range of annual, biannual and perennial crops to produce good feed and cover value through the changing seasons. Weed burdens are a common challenge for growers but with Kings’ expertise and extensive herbicide trials, successful game cover plots can be established while maintaining agronomic control. Our management advice includes crop nutrition to ensure your crops perform to their full potential.

GAME COVER CASE STUDY “I turned to Marc for help in reducing weeds and developing a shoot that encourages wildlife as well as holding game birds,” states David Luff, keeper at Fordham Farming Partnership near Baldock, Cambridgeshire. Successfully combining farming, conservation and sporting interests, the private estate covers 1000 acres and currently provides around 12 days shooting a year, beginning with partridges in September and moving onto pheasants. Faced with a single ‘signature’ drive and a significant grass and broadleaved weed burden where plots had been used for game cover for decades, Mr Luff contacted Marc for his expertise on game and weed management. Marc visited the estate to meet him, along with the estate contractor, to consider the options available and agree an agronomy plan for future crops. “My priorities were to meet our stewardship scheme requirements by creating a decent feeding area for wild birds as well as game birds and to address the weed problems,” explains Mr Luff. “I’m now in my second year here and my aim is to get the seedbeds as clean as possible.”
With advice and continued support from Marc, Mr Luff has carefully established and managed new game crops to address the weed burden that had been allowed to develop in previous years. Plots with a broadleaved weed issue were put into maize undersown with Tanka Millet Mix and Kings Sorghum Mix to provide more diverse feeding, windbreaks and flushing points. Where grass weeds were a problem, Poacher maize or Moir Mix have been used to reduce the rogue millet in particular. The bespoke Moir Mix including chicory also doubles as a wild bird seed mixture to meet Higher Level Stewardship requirements as well as providing feed and cover for game birds. Mr Luff is pleased with this year’s performance. “Holding birds doesn’t seem to have been easy for anybody this year, but we put some new partridge drives in this year which worked very well. Our maize has grown well, so have the wild bird seed mixes and we’ve got on top of the rogue millet,” he says. “Marc is always on the end of the phone and gets here as quickly as he can if I need him which is a great help.”
David Luff
Now that the rogue millet is under control, the team will focus on reducing the seed bed burden of fat hen too. The future of the estate is bright. Marc describes Mr Luff as a proactive keeper who is keen to improve the quality of shooting, variation in how the drives work and quantities too. “We’ll be putting in two more partridge drives for next year and a brand new pheasant drive too, which has never been done here before. We’re a small estate but this will give us more options and more variety for the guns to make for a better experience all round.”

GAME COVER CROPS
Perennial crops are an ideal choice for areas where regular crop establishment is difficult or where a longer term crop choice is required. A third of the game cover area planted to perennials will help to reduce your workload, lower costs and most importantly, provide valuable year round habitat for a host of game and farmland wildlife species. For details of the best option for your needs, contact Kings on 0800 587 9797.

GAME COVER CROPS
Maize continues to be the first choice game cover crop for many growers. We work with leading breeders to bring you a selection of high performance varieties that will meet a wide range of requirements. Campaign Mix and Campaign Mix South (page 25) are a great partner to maize thanks to the ease of weed control and their significant appeal to game and farmland birds. Introduce headland strips of sorghum or a perennial crop where possible, such as reed canary grass or Stand and Deliver perennial chicory. These will help to shelter maize crops during the establishment period and through the winter months, as well as providing year long cover areas. CODE

GAME COVER CROPS
Sorghum is most suited to areas with a favourable climate in the southern half of the UK. Following several reasonably warm summers, we continue to see growers planting greater areas of sorghum. When sown late in the spring and given heat it is a relatively straightforward crop to grow with limited crop pests. Wherever possible please consider adding a feed element such as millet, linseed or triticale to encourage game and provide a supplementary food source for farmland birds.

Cover cropping has become increasingly popular in recent years as growers seek to boost soil health and vitality. Grown in the right circumstances, the benefits are vast. Meeting EFA and stewardship scheme requirements: Grown to specific criteria, green cover can bring benefits to your business and fulfil regulations at the same time. Reduced leaching of valuable nutrients from bare soils: Cover crops are excellent at capturing leftover nutrients, especially nitrogen, from the soil. Kings trials typically show a 60% reduction in leached nutrients which may otherwise run into watercourses, thus helping to protect the environment and avoiding waste of resources that have been paid for. Improving soil structure, drainage and soil organic matter levels: This is a key long term benefit which can lead to reduced cultivations and higher yields. Complex root systems help to add valuable organic matter to the soil, improve soil structure and water holding capacity and feed the soil fauna. Reduction of soil pests, diseases and weeds: Soil pests such as nematodes and soil borne diseases are common in some rotations and can be considerably reduced by cover crops. Combining the right species with herbicides can be useful in some weed control programmes too.
Yield improvements: Kings trials and experiences have shown that following crop yields often improve after green cover, with increases of 0.5t/ha in cereals and 10% in root crops. This depends on a number of factors, however, so taking expert advice to gain maximum benefit is crucial. Grazing opportunities: Grazing potential varies with species, mixture, frost tolerance, maturity, leaf type and total biomass production, but can be a valuable bonus in addition to the soil benefits. With a wide range of cover crop species available, it’s vital to be clear about the target benefits in any field. Careful choices concerning species, variety and agronomy need to be made to suit the soil type, rotation and following crop establishment. GREEN COVER CROPS
Siletta Nova oil radish.
Oil radish
Biofumigation crops
Cereals
Oil radish has rapid growth and is excellent at catching nitrogen. It produces high levels of organic matter and its strong, deep roots bust through compaction to improve soil structure. It is not a clubroot host, making it valuable in a rape rotation and is approved for use in Ecological Focus Areas under Countryside Stewardship in England and the AECS in Scotland. Kings varieties include standard oil radish, nematode resistant oil radish and Tillage radish.
Biofumigation needs crops that mulch easily and have a high glucosinolate content that rapidly breaks down to produce biofumigant gas Isothiocyanates. Working closely with specialist breeders, Kings mixtures of mustards and radish are formulated to give high biofumigant gas production.
Cereals are easy to establish with high biomass production and good nutrient catching ability. Depending on variety selection, other benefits include fast growth and reduction of black-grass and free living nematodes. Kings’ cereal options include forage rye, strigosa oats and common oats.
Mustard An economical option with rapid growth and high biomass, mustard has a long growing season and is suitable for late drilling. It is an efficient nitrogen catcher and winter hardy. Careful variety selection can provide biofumigant properties and proven reduction of Beet Cyst Nematode, but mustard can exacerbate clubroot and nematode issues, so be sure to take expert advice. Kings varieties include basic white mustard, nematode resistant mustard, brown mustard and Ethiopian mustard.
40
Vetch Vetch is a large seeded legume which fixes large volumes of atmospheric nitrogen. Available as winter and spring varieties, vetch can provide winter hardiness, deep roots and fast growth. Kings varieties include common vetch and hairy vetch. Vetch is also a common partner in mixtures.
Clover Clovers have a wide range of growth characteristics and levels of productivity, but all of Kings’ varieties are effective at fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Options include berseem clover, crimson clover and red clover.
Grass Kings offers a number of grass based options designed to provide green cover benefits. These can range from short term Westerwolds to a three year Black-grass Buster mix based on a blend of festulolium and perennial rye grass.
Clive’s advice . . . Cover crops can bring tremendous value to your farm business by improving soil structure and health, managing soil borne pests and meeting compliance needs. Speak to your local Kings or Frontier advisor to discuss the best solutions to meet your needs.

CROP PRODUCTION SERVICE
Catch crops and cover crops for EFAs Cover crops and catch crops are a key element of the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) as one of the options available to growers within the Ecological Focus Area section (EFA). The use of cover crops and catch crops as an EFA is controlled by rules around mixtures, species, dates and areas. They must be a mix of at least two different types that establish quickly, achieve ground cover, will use available nutrients and be in place within a specific period. To count as an EFA in 2017: • crops must be established by 31st August 2017 and retained until at least 1st October 2017
GUIDE TO COVER CROPS The many benefits including: Improved nitrogen efficiency, soil condition and pest control pages 4-13
• crops must be established by 1st October 2017 and retained until at least 15th January 2018.
The percentage of crops contained in the mix is flexible, as long as there is a visible mix of at least one cereal and one non-cereal from the list below. Inclusion of other species will mean that the mix will not count as an EFA. • Cereal: Rye, barley or oats • Non-cereal: Vetch, phacelia, mustard, lucerne or oil radish. Kings has a range of standard mixtures that suit the EFA option and can also tailor make mixtures to individual needs. Taking advice is highly recommended to ensure compliance with the rules while also meeting the needs of the farm.

GREEN COVER MIXTURES
Defender oil radish planted after vining peas.
Carefully formulated green cover mixtures can provide multiple benefits and often combine a deep rooting crop to retain fertility with a legume crop to trap atmospheric nitrogen. With careful selection, mixtures can provide increased organic matter and soil biodiversity, a rich improvement in soil humus, improved soil structure and a reduction in soil pests and diseases. Kings’ range of standard mixtures suits most situations. Where you have more specific needs or require organic seed, we can provide advice and guidance on creating individual mixtures to suit your soil type and cropping rotation. We produce all our own mixtures from a wide range of raw materials at our specialist plant and offer a range of bag sizes to suit individual needs. Should you be using home saved cereals as a base for your green cover crop, Kings also advises on and supplies specific pre-mixes in a range of pack sizes to suit your individual needs. Please be aware that any home saved cereal seed is applicable for farm saved seed royalty payments, even if the seed is used straight from the barn. It can only be from crops grown within your own business.

CASE STUDY Turning to Kings western technical advisor, Lee Ward for expert advice has enabled David Watkins of Ballingham Hall to prevent exacerbation of crop disease and reducing yields to maintain important farm income.
Jason Randall
Julian Ware
The mixed farm near Hereford includes 250 hectares of combinable crops, 100ha of forage maize for a local anaerobic digestion plant and 30ha of potato land rented to another farmer. The farm also supports a 100 head pedigree Hereford suckler herd, some of which are eventually served in Mr Watkins’ nearby hotel. To get the most from the land, the rotation includes a green crop to provide grazing for 1000 tack sheep, but with an ongoing clubroot problem, something needed to change.
After an initial meeting to discuss the specific needs of the business, Lee arranged a bespoke mix of oil radish, oats and rye, with more radish than cereal components to meet the farm’s requirements. The mix is now in its second year and has been well received by the business as well as the livestock. The valuable nutritional content of Kings forage crops is evidenced in trials across the UK and the bespoke mix analyses well, with a high protein content and high levels of metabolisable energy. Mostly planted after winter barley or winter wheat, it is grazed between November and February ahead of the maize and potatoes. Farming a large proportion of lighter land, the oil radish element is important for the soil structure and maintenance of organic matter levels, as these sandier soils can slump and become quite hard if organic matter levels are low. The deep taproot of
the oil radish helps to liven the soils up while not promoting or exacerbating the clubroot present. If required, the mix would also fulfil Ecological Focus Area criteria. “Lee showed us that there was a productive alternative that allowed us to keep having the tack sheep, which is financially very important to the farm,” Mr Ware concludes. “The sheep farmer is really pleased with it and hopefully we can now improve our OSR yields too.”
Farm manager, Julian Ware, explains: “We use a grass based fattening system which lends itself to the Hereford breed we manage and they perform well on Kings high production Flexicrop grass. For the sheep, we had always grown stubble turnips and other brassicas, but that was making clubroot on the farm worse and our OSR yields were suffering.”

FORAGE CROPS
Jupiter Turnip Rape.
Kale
Forage rape
Main crop turnips
Kale can provide an abundant feed supply for grazing from mid summer to late winter. Kale is a versatile crop and offers the highest dry matter utilisation of all forage brassicas. The following key varieties are available treated as standard with Seed-Life™ nutrient treatment and Cruiser SB™ for flea beetle control where marked (*).
Forage rape is a quick growing, leafy brassica generally planted in the summer months to provide a complete grazing crop during late autumn and early winter. With fleshy growth, most of the plant is consumed, including leaf and stem, so there is little waste.
Main crop turnips provide a robust forage crop when planted in early summer and can provide a flexible grazing opportunity from late summer to the end of winter. Often mixed with a stubble turnip to spread the period of feed availability.
••Hobson – Excellent for finishing
••Green Globe – Late maturing variety
••Coleor* - High yielding, leafy, diploid
kale of short to medium height. Renowned for high leaf to stem ratio. Notable winter hardiness. Distinctive purple colouration.
••Caledonian* – High yielding, clubroot
resistant variety that can be grown on the same site where required. Often the highest yielding variety in trials. Ideal for cattle.
••1000 Head* – Winter hardy. Long
stem and leafy canopy of high ‘D’ value.
••Maris Kestrel - Excellent leaf to stem
ratio. Long grazing utilisation period. Available with Cruiser SB™ alone.
lambs. Good resistance to powdery mildew
••Emerald – Very palatable. Can be
grazed within 12–14 weeks of planting
••Sparta - Clubroot tolerant with good yield potential.
Turnip rape Turnip rape provides a useful alternative to traditional forage brassicas, combining a leafy top with a small root.
••Jupiter - Quick growing and winter
hardy, particularly suited to northern regions. Flexible sowing window, ideal for planting until end of September.
••Interval - Great leaf to stem ratio.
Can be grazed within 10-12 weeks of planting
••Swift – High yielding. Can provide
notable regrowth after initial grazing period. Suits later sowings.
48
Stubble turnips Stubble turnips are the most common forage crop, either broadcast into a standing cereal crop prior to harvest or drilled into the stubble immediately after the combine. Economical to grow, they provide a flexible late autumn and early winter forage opportunity.
••Samson – Fast growing tetraploid.
Produces large purple ‘tankard’ roots that encourage significant intake by livestock
••Delilah – Notably resistant to mildew, creates large white roots with plenty of grazing potential
Kale rape The result of hybrid breeding between kale and forage rape, kale rape is quick growing and winter hardy, ideal for summer sowing and grazing through autumn and winter. Dry matter yields are above traditional forage rape crops.
that can be grazed from between 90120 days of planting. Combines a leafy top with a substantial root.
Lee’s advice . . . Utilising forage crops within the farm rotation can bring significant benefits as a break crop and may help to reduce the reliance on bought-in compound feed.
••Barkant – Traditional stubble turnip.
High yielding. High leaf to root ratio
••Vollenda - High yielding, cost effective tetraploid. Good disease resistance
••Tyfon – Leafy type with a small bulb.
Winter hardy. Can be summer sown but also useful for late spring planting to provide grazing during dry periods when other forage opportunities may be limited.
FORAGE CROPS Swedes Swedes provide a high energy winter feed that can be grazed or lifted as required. Where grazed they should be strip grazed to avoid wastage.
••Gowrie – Top yielding variety for
pre or post Christmas use. Good resistance to clubroot and powdery mildew
••Invitation – Ideal for late winter use.
Very hardy. Useful for sheep or cattle.
Fodder beet Fodder beet is grown to harvest the mature root for feeding during winter. It will notably out-yield turnip and swede crops. It requires a precision drill for sowing and specialist harvesting equipment. Energy beet varieties for biogas use are also available.
••Blaze - Produces high dry matter
yields with a distinctive red root. Has a medium dry matter percentage so can be fed whole or chopped
••Magnum – Can produce substantial
yields. Notably more frost tolerant than other varieties due to high dry matter
••Beretta - High dry matter. Good
disease resistance. Ideal for late lifting
••Blizzard – High dry matter yields. Ideal for lifting with sugar beet machinery
••Splendide - Excellent all round variety. Good dry matter content. High beet yield. High root to leaf ratio.
Forage rye Forage rye is excellent for early grazing where the window between other crops is short. It can be strip grazed for cattle or winter sheep and made into big bale silage as required.
••Humbolt – Specially bred for forage production (not a grain type). Ideal for early ‘bite’ grazing as spring growth can be 3 weeks earlier than Italian ryegrass
••Protector – Grows quickly in low
temperatures. Provides good entry to a following forage maize crop.
Lucerne Lucerne provides palatable high protein forage. Drought tolerant, it has 5 years’ potential. Seed requires an innoculant.
••Marshall – Well adapted to the UK. Highly suited to silage or hay
••Daisy - Verticillium wilt resistance

Maize
Arable silage
Forage maize is grown to make silage from the immature plant. Best results come from harvesting when most grain sites have converted soluble sugars to starch. The target for harvest is to achieve 27-35% dry matter silage. Available varieties include:
Most commonly combining legumes and cereals, these mixtures are an excellent way to create a high volume forage crop containing both starch and protein. Sown from March onwards, they can provide fresh cut material fed directly or be ensiled for winter use. They also benefit following crops by helping to improve soil structure, retain nutrients and fix atmospheric nitrogen.
••Augustus – Maturity rating 11. Ultra
early variety with yield potential 4-5% over Kentaurus
••Autens – Maturity rating 9. New for 2016. Oustanding yield in an early variety. High early plant vigour
••Kougar – Maturity rating 9. Early
maturing, high yielding and high quality. A well proven variety that suits the majority of situations
••Peas and oats – A simple combination of a legume and cereal
