Taking Back America The importance of Philadelphia’s Democratic National Convention and how LGBTs fit in By Richard Hack

62% Hillary Clinton’s placement in a “polls-plus” forecast for president—which adjusts for potential convention bounces— by Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight blog

SPEAK OUT

he Democratic National Convention played out last month in Philadelphia, “The City of Brotherly Love” and birthplace of our nation. There was the predictable lineup of speakers, the formal nomination of Hillary Clinton as the first female presidential candidate from a major political party in our country, and Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her vice-presidential running mate. In reality, however, the Democratic National Convention symbolized far more than the traditional nominating showcase for the party’s White House candidates. This convention carried with it a mandate to take back America from the hate and fear-mongers who terrorized the nation for much of the previous week as the Republican Party held its own convention in Cleveland. Donald Trump’s address was a toxic combination of unsubstantiated claims. “Excessive regulation is costing our country as much as $2 trillion a year,” he said, before added that “ending such regulation will produce more than $20 trillion in job-creating economic activity.” Trump also dared to repeat his ridiculous assumption that “NATO is obsolete,” as if any organization that works toward world peace could possibly become archaic—ever. In any other election year, such talk—along with the verbal bashing that Trump has directed toward Mexicans and Muslims, as well as the character assassination of Democratic opponent Clinton—would have had the international press reeling in disbelief and demanding the Republican party disown itself from such absurd and mindless chatter. Instead, journalists have been so barraged by never-ending insults and farcicalities that none can focus on any single insult. The

barrage is that great. But thankfully reason returned to America in the form of the first lady of the United States, whose approval rating has reached nearly 80% across all political parties, races and religions. The world was watching as Michelle Obama took to the convention stage and mesmerized us by being at once political and apolitical, stirring and comforting, gliding between patriotism, feminism, family, home, race and partisanship, eloquently reminding all of us that what we had heard the previous week from the Republican presidential nominee was not only untrue but radically irresponsible. The first lady reminded us that America has not lost its way, has not forgotten its past and has not become some sort of vigilante state that needs to be made great again. “Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great—that somehow we need to make it great again— because this right now is the greatest country on Earth,” she told the audience. “And as my daughters prepare to set out into the world, I want a leader who is worthy of that truth.” There was a steadiness in her eyes and voice daring the

“While our party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us.” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., issued a statement on Aug. 1 denouncing Donald Trump for his remarks about the parents of fallen Army Captain Humayan Khan

audience to doubt she spoke the truth. None of the shouting we had seen from the Republican carnival. No naked pandering to prejudice that Donald Trump had dared to pass off as reality. “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves,” the first lady said. “And I watch my daughters—two beautiful, intelligent, black young women—playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.” As we now move away from conventions and into months of predictably contentious campaigning, the LGBT community is going to find itself stage center: disparaged by the Republicans as being everything from unnatural to evil, embraced by the Democrats as being part of a nation that places equality at the cornerstone of its heritage. It is quite likely that Florida will again be the state that decides this election, just as it has been in previous presidential campaigns. The difference this time is that the fabric of our very nation is at stake, and the future of the world as we know it will be decided. The Republicans know that as well. It is for that reason and no other that Donald Trump made history on the final day of his convention by embracing the LGBT community—the first mention of gays in any Republican convention, considered by many to be a watershed moment. That such a gratuitous gesture came at the end of one of the most aggressive sessions of the Republican-led Congress is as hollow as it is transparent. Make no mistake, just as the world’s eyes were on the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia for signs of strength in the face of lunacy, bigotry and threats, so too is the world watching America’s LGBT community to rise above the name-calling and insecurities of the past to stand proud in our conviction that equality is not only possible; it is expected. The reality for every LGBT American is that we are no longer the followers but the leaders. Taking back America is up to every one of us, and the battle has just begun.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? A look at the celebrities who have immersed themselves in this year’s presidential election, dropping endorsements for Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton By Stephan Horbelt

DONALD TRUMP’S BIG-NAME ENDORSERS

,

KIRSTIE ALLEY The Cheers and Fat Actress star, longtime Scientologist and Jenny Craig spokesperson tweeted back in April, “HELLO BOYS! This is my formal endorsement of @ realDonaldTrump & I’m a woman! (last I checked).” STEPHEN BALDWIN The least marketable of the Baldwin brothers had this to say about Trump on CNN: “I think he’s fantastic. I love him. I think he’d make a great president. He’s not a politician, and he doesn’t care what anybody thinks. And that’s why he’s surging in the polls. He says what he thinks.” AZEALIA BANKS The oft-controversial rapper tweeted her support of Trump multiple times before being banned from the social media platform in May. Earlier that month she announced, “I REALLY want Donald Trump to win the election,” saying Hillary Clinton “has been GROOMED for the presidency. She’s just another one of the establishment robots here to carry out an agenda.” AARON CARTER The 28-year-old singer (and brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter) tweeted in February, “Does America want to have a president who FOLLOWS or someone who leads? I vote for @realDonaldTrump,” only to have fans force him to defend his decision on social media. “I’m too intelligent for you guys—like, people who don’t understand politics. I have a lot more information than I’ve given out,” he said in an interview with People.

12

FRONTIERSMEDIA.COM

TERESA GIUDICE Shortly after leaving prison (where she was serving time for conspiracy and bankruptcy fraud charges), this Real Housewife of New Jersey told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, “Of course I’m going to vote for Donald Trump. I think he’s amazing. I think he’ll make a great president.”

to why he’s supporting Trump: “We’re both successful businessmen. We both have pretty big shows on television. We both have wives that are 1,000 times better looking than us. So I do like Trump.” Fellow Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson instead endorsed Ted Cruz back in January, saying the Texas senator “fits the bill.”

LORETTA LYNN If you thought this country star would support the female in the 2016 presidential race, you thought wrong. “I just think he’s the only one who’s going to turn this country around,” she said about Trump in an interview to Reuters. “Trump has sold me—what more can I say?”

KID ROCK The musician echoed Stephen Baldwin’s sentiments to Rolling Stone back in February, saying America should let Trump run the country like a business. Rock had previously spoken out for Ben Carson, saying, “I’m very interested in the things [he] has to say.”

WAYNE NEWTON The Vegas performer told Fox & Friends he thinks Trump would make a great president. “Number one, he tells the truth. Number two, he’s been where most of these guys want to be, in terms of riding on his own plane. He doesn’t have to worry about what hotels he stays in, he doesn’t have to worry about how his family gets to Hawaii, so on and so forth.” TED NUGENT In a surprise to no one, the vocal Republican rocker announced his support of Trump in a very long Facebook post last December. He referred to the GOP candidate as “the hellraiser America has needed for a very long time” and believes Trump should be awarded the Medal of Freedom “for speaking his mind in such a bold, honest and straightforward manner.” WILLIE ROBERTSON The Duck Dynasty star gave very clear-cut reasons as

DENNIS RODMAN The former basketball player and old chum of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is an alum of The Donald’s Celebrity Apprentice. He tweeted last month, “@realDonaldTrump has been a great friend for many years. We don’t need another politician, we need a businessman like Mr. Trump! Trump 2016!” MARTIN SHKRELI Your favorite “pharma bro”—whom you know as that guy who hiked up the prices of HIV meds— tweeted his endorsement of Donald Trump during the Republican National Convention: “Trump has my unmitigated endorsement. It was hard won and I was skeptical. The entire Trump family convinced me.” TILA TEQUILA “I am a huge Donald Trump supporter, and so should you,” said the former reality star in an October video on her YouTube channel, before she listed the reasons behind her support, which include that he’s anti-vaccinations, supports no income taxes

ROBERT DE NIRO “I think that she’s paid her dues,” De Niro told The Daily Beast in April 2015. “There are going to be no surprises, and she has earned the right to be president and the head of the country at this point. It’s that simple. And she’s a woman, which is very important because her take on things may be what we need right now.” LENA DUNHAM Speaking at the DNC on July 26, the Girls creator and star said, “Hillary knows that access and opportunity are the American promise—not transphobia, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and systemic racism.” Dunham also stumped for Clinton in New Hampshire in January. LADY GAGA Back in 2015, Lady Gaga made headlines when she held up a “Yaaas, Hillary!” tee alongside Clinton for a photo opp, and in June she posted on Instagram a pic of her sporting an American flag swimsuit with the caption “#HILLARY2016 Nothing can keep a strong woman down. VOTE for the first female US president in history. Shake it up America, this country needs a little rock n’ roll.” SAMUEL L. JACKSON Back in December, the Snakes on a Plane actor told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m forever a Democrat, you know, and I’m gonna vote for Hillary,” explaining that while he loved Bernie—who’s “a man of the people”—he didn’t think he could win. for those making less than $25,000 and wants closed borders. MIKE TYSON The former heavyweight boxing champ said in an interview with HuffPost Live in October that Trump “should be president of the United States. Let’s try something new. Let’s run America like a business, where no colors matter. Whoever can do the job gets the job.” JON VOIGT We’ve long wondered how the gorgeous, human rights-involved Angelina Jolie sprung from the loins of this longtime Hollywood Republican, who endorsed Trump by saying, “When he decided to run for president, I know he did it with a true conviction to bring this country back to prosperity. He is the only one who can do it. No frills, no fuss, only candid truths.”

HILLARY CLINTON’S CELEBRITY POSSE BEYONCÉ The Queen Bey may have been mum so far on social media with regard to an official endorsement, but the lemonade-loving artist did show support for Clinton by appearing at a New York City fundraiser back in May of 2015. GEORGE CLOONEY The A-lister and his wife, Amal, hosted a fundraiser at their L.A. home for Clinton back in April. The $33,400 tickets went to the Hillary Victory Fund.

ELTON JOHN The openly gay veteran rocker performed at Clinton’s Radio City Music Hall fundraiser in March, dedicating his last song, “Still Standing,” to the former Secretary of State. KIM KARDASHIAN “I got my selfie!” she tweeted after meeting Clinton at an August 2015 fundraiser. “I really loved hearing her speak & hearing her goals for our country!” #HillaryForPresident.” JULIANNE MOORE Moore urged people to vote in the primaries back in April, and tweeted a pic of her post-polling place with the caption “I just voted for @HillaryClinton #ImWithHer.” Moore also introduced Chelsea Clinton to the crowd at the Radio City Music Hall fundraiser. AMY SCHUMER The Trainwreck and Inside Amy Schumer star officially endorsed Clinton in March with an image of the two women together on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, with the hashtag #imwithher, and she’s since also tweeted a photo of herself in a Clinton tee. SARAH SILVERMAN Formerly an outspoken endorser of Sen. Bernie Sanders, it didn’t take the comedienne long after Clinton secured the democratic nomination to voice her newfound support at the DNC on July 25. At one point she remarked to members of the crowd who were booing Clinton’s name, “To the Bernie-or-bust people, you’re being ridiculous.” STEVEN SPIELBERG The famed director made headlines when he donated

no less than $1 million to help get Clinton elected. The book Unlikeable: The Problem with Hillary claims Bill Clinton enlisted the help of his old friend Spielberg to make Hillary seem more likeable (by putting her in touch with acting coaches), though that story hasn’t been validated by any of the parties involved. MERYL STREEP After the world-famous actress endorsed Clinton on July 26 at the DNC, she left no doubt as to whom she would support come November. “What does it take to be the first female anything?” she asked the national audience. “It takes grit, and it takes grace”—two qualities many would say Streep possesses herself. KERRY WASHINGTON After Clinton visited the set of Washington’s Scandal in February, the actress—who also portrayed Anita Hill in HBO’s Confirmation—instagrammed a photo with the Democratic presidential candidate. PHARRELL WILLIAMS He told Ellen DeGeneres in October that he’ll be supporting Clinton for president. “It’s time for a woman to be in there,” he said. “Not that I don’t love our current president; I just feel like it’s Hillary time.”

HERE COME THE DEBATES Behold the dates and venues for the 2016 presidential debates between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, as well as the VP debate between Mike Pence and Tim Kaine. September can’t come soon enough! MONDAY, SEPT. 26

issan congratulates the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) on the 40th anniversary of its Gay Softball World Series! The world-renowned LGBTQ sporting event takes place Aug. 15-20 in Austin, Texas. “Sports is an incredible way to build community. And Nissan wanted to extend our well wishes to the NAGAAA family on bringing the LGBTQ community and allies together for 40 years and counting,” says Erich Marx, director of marketing and executive sponsor of the Gay Straight Alliance at Nissan. More than 185 teams from 43 cities across the United States and Canada are participating in this multi-day event, which includes opening ceremonies, a multi-division softball tournament, community activities and the closing ceremonies. Established in 1977, the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance Open Division is a 501(c)(3) international sports organization comprised of men and women dedicated to promoting amateur athletics for the LGBTQ community. The organization was formed after the first Gay Softball World Series in 1976. For a second year, Nissan is a proud partner of the event, a six-day softball competition that expects to draw more than 10,000 athletes, coaches and fans. NAGAAA’s local LGBTQ

softball leagues also partnered with Nissan at LGBTQ community events including Long Beach Pride, L.A. Pride, Capital Pride, Nashville Pride, San Francisco Pride, NYC Pride, Atlanta Pride, Orlando Pride and Northalsted Market Days in Chicago. “With Nissan having the most diverse consumer base in the automotive industry and an engaged group of LGBTQ employees and allies, we’re well positioned to connect with the LGBTQ community,” says Marx. Since 2013, Nissan has scored a perfect 100 in the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index for its LGBT-inclusive policies and commitment to the community. The company was among the fastest risers in the history of the index. “We are incredibly fortunate to have Nissan on our team,” says Chris Balton, NAGAAA Commissioner. “Nissan has been an outstanding partner at the national level and this year at the local level, leveraging our member cities for Pride activations across the nation.” Nissan’s Gay Straight Alliance at Nissan is the driving force behind the company’s LGBTQ outreach efforts. Nissan also offers inclusive benefits and Championing Diversity workshops for employees, and a “Diversity and Inclusion” team works closely with advocacy groups such as the HRC to drive a culture of equality in the workplace.

These 4 hairstyles—lighter looks that require less product—allow for an easier, breezier summer By Mikey Rox Changing of the Guards Buzz cuts have helped schwetty bros unload their locks since the dawn of time—or at least electric clippers—but you can update this lowmaintenance, closely cropped summertime staple with a part shaved into the scalp. Before you go tellin’ the barber to “number one you all over,” however, carefully consider the outcome. “Not every face shape or style can pull it off,” says Giovanni Vaccaro, creative director of GLAMSQUAD. If you’re hesitant, ease into a military-grade high-and-tight while you’re in the chair before throwing caution—and your remaining follicles—to the wind. Fade to Bedhead Skip summer classes and sleep in—that’s the story your bedhead is relaying anyway—with a low fade on the side and untamed texture on top. This stayed-in-bed-until-10 style sways a tad hipster, Vacarro admits, but it’s an edgy ’do with funky appeal, and Summer School’s Mr. Shoop would totally high-five you for it.

Less Pomp, More Circumstance “The pompadour has been a very popular men’s hairstyle for the past year, but the coiffed and structured ‘pretty boy’ look has recently evolved to be a little less polished,” Vacarro says. Beat the heat by grunging yours up with a touch of pliable fiber (we recommend American Crew’s Fiber, $18 for 3 oz., which is great for shorter hair) and tussle the top to the side for a low-shine look that’s as effortless as it is easy to accomplish. Swept Away Can’t part with the part? Keep your longer style tidy and professional—even when it’s volcano degrees out—by shampooing with an anti-frizz formula (try Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo, $26 at soap.com) and using a conditioner that wards off excess moisture. Keep flyaways at bay by finger-brushing your hair with Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade () to prevent your coif from becoming a poof of ‘The Donald’ proportions.

ON THE MOVE Roy Choi—who helped usher in our city’s food truck craze with his Kogi BBQ truck before looking to hotel and restaurant enterprises—is returning to his roots. On Instagram he unveiled The LocoL Low Rider, an upcoming food truck version of the fast food chain he opened in Watts earlier this year. Choi says it’ll be ready to serve come September. —S.H.

FLAG RAISING, COLOMBO: MARTIN SASSE

It’s on the must-see list of jetsetters everywhere, and for good reason—the majestic landscapes, range of wildlife and historical significance of this island nation are unparalleled By Eric Rosen PROOF THAT sometimes good things do come in small packages, the SKEYE Mini Drone with HD Camera ($99, fab.com) lets you capture your travels on video in a way you might not have thought possible. Perfect for traveling thanks to its small size (this throw-to-fly drone fits in the palm of your hand), you can record high-def aerial footage of the gang lounging beachside or nab stunning views of your metropolitan hangout from 150 feet up in the air. Flight time is seven to eight minutes on a 4GB memory card, with LED lights for after-dark ventures, and beginner and advanced flight modes are available. —Stephan Horbelt

ormerly a no-man’s land due to a decades-long civil war, Sri Lanka has been at peace since 2009 and is fast becoming a top spot on every jetsetter’s must-hit list. The island nation boasts everything from world-class beaches to ancient ruins, lush colonial tea plantations to national parks teeming with wildlife. Plus, thanks to its compact size, 10 days to two weeks is all you need to explore this fascinating destination. Getting there is faster and easier than ever thanks to connections from the capital, Colombo, not only to other Asian cities such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing, but also through the three Middle Eastern hubs of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha. Many visitors skip Colombo altogether, but I’d suggest setting aside at least a day or two there to unwind from the journey. Book a stay at the recently renovated 150-year-old Galle Face Hotel (gallefacehotel. com, $$$$$), Colombo’s luxurious grande dame. The stately hotel is one of the oldest east of the Suez Canal,

and afternoon tea here is practically an institution. Served out on a colonnaded veranda (with a bagpiper who plays for the flag-lowering at sunset), this multicourse affair is a crash course in the country’s finest teas served with dainty, delectable pastries. For a dose of history, take the four-hour drive north to the so-called Cultural Triangle. On the way, stop in the former royal capital of Kandy to see the palace and the Temple of the Tooth, which houses a relic containing one of the Buddha’s teeth. One of the Sri Lanka’s most spectacular archaeological sites, Sigiriya was a mountaintop fort and pleasure palace that dates to the fourth century. The views alone (not to mention the erotic frescoes) are worth a hike up to the top. Nearby, Anuradhapura is a sprawling complex of ancient palaces and monasteries whose major stupas rival the magnificence and scale of the ancient pyramids of Giza. Vil Uyana (jetwinghotels.com, $$$$$), an eco-resort whose bungalows dot reclaimed wetlands where you might spy a crocodile lazily wading its way among the reeds. Also nearby, Ulagalla (ugaescapes.com, $$$$$) is a boutique hotel that comprises a 150-year-old mansion and villas set amidst 58 acres of lush gardens. After a day of sightseeing, you can go kayaking alongside local fisherman on the enormous reservoir adjacent to the property. Your next stop should be the tea country in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. The region is a veritable cornucopia whose local produce—everything from roses and strawberries to gourds and carrots—is prized far and wide. The laidback but refined Mas Villa (masvilla.com, $$$$$) is a bed and breakfast in a 200-year-old house owned by a prominent local family. There, you can spend the morning hiking among the tea plantations to remote villages, then head to a tea factory like historical Storefield to learn about the industry that made this island one of the most valuable territories in the British Empire. The afternoon is a perfect time for a hike down to the Kotmale Reservoir for a swim in the placid waters. From here, it’s a lengthy drive southeast along winding mountain roads (and past some spectacular waterfalls) to the southern coast for a few days of tracking leopards, elephants and sloth bears, not to mention crocodiles, peacocks and armadillo-like pangolins (if you’re lucky) in Yala National Park (yalasrilanka.com). One of the country’s newest lodges, the rustic-chic Chena Huts (ugaescapes.com, $$$$$) just opened

The resort’s expert guides will also ensure you are among the first visitors to enter the park at sunrise, and thus have a better chance of spotting the wildlife. Plan a final few relaxing days on Sri Lanka’s rugged southern coast. For a beach holiday away from the crowds, book a stay at Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle (anantara.com, $$$$$), a new hotel on a beachfront former coconut plantation. For something a little smaller in scale, Cape Weligama (resplendentceylon.com, $$$$$) is a Relais & Chateaux property with second-to-none cuisine and stunning views of the surrounding red-rock cliffs. Your final stop should be Galle, the 17th century Dutch fort. Now a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, the town is packed with galleries and boutiques. Be sure to buy a sarong at Barefoot (barefootceylon.com) and some spices to bring home from Laksala (laksala.gov.lk). Historical hotels in town include the über-luxurious Amangalla (aman.com, $$$$$), which occupies the two 400-year-old buildings that were once the Dutch colonial headquarters. Though there’s plenty to explore in town, you can also arrange excursions such as bicycling through nearby villages and even a Sri Lankan cooking class out in the rice paddies. To maximize your time, your best bet is to use the services of a high-end outfitter like Cazenove + Loyd (cazloyd. com), which can arrange a bespoke itinerary for your getaway, as well as a dedicated driver who can double as your guide.

‘Hanging by the lake’ takes on a new air of extravagance as the Ritz-Carlton breaks ground on its brand-new Lake Tahoe resort experience

I

t’s only fitting that the first and only AAA Five Diamond resort in the Lake Tahoe region would come to represent the new face of luxury on Northern California’s most famous lakefront. Heretofore, one of the great conundrums posed by a visit to Lake Tahoe has been that the most notable and luxurious accommodations in the region reside in the mountains overlooking the lake rather than on the majestic lakefront itself—which is fine in winter, when skiing takes top priority among most tourists, but when summer rolls around and the lake becomes the center of action in this most picturesque of California destinations, the distance between the resorts and the lake is an inconvenience at best and a major disappointment at worst. However, that is all about to change. The sumptuous Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, home of notable sources of indulgence including signature daily Marshmology events—where the art of making s’mores becomes a transcendent experience—as well as a spectacular spa and pool club, recently set in motion plans to take its luxurious amenities to new heights. On June 8, the property broke ground on a spectacular new lakefront spot that will simply be called Lake Club. Slated to open next year, it will marry the Ritz-Carlton’s unmatched service and accommodations with an exclusive lakeside hangout bordered by a 2,000-square-foot

lawn area peering out over unobstructed, panoramic views from one of the lake’s finest vantage points. The contemporary building, housing indoor and outdoor dining terraces and gathering areas, will also offer direct beach access to Lake Tahoe; a private boat pier with buoys to launch water sports and recreational activities including boating, kayaking and stand-up paddle boards; an outdoor whirlpool, fire pit and barbeque; and showers and changing facilities. And as if that weren’t enough of a draw, guests of Lake Club will also be able to experience Wild Goose II, a renowned 36-foot handcrafted wooden boat plying the waters of Lake Tahoe. “The launch of the Lake Club will provide our guests with luxury amenities and private access to Lake Tahoe along with limitless summer recreational activities,” says Joseph Mattioli, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. “The addition of the Lake Club will allow The Ritz-Carlton to offer a one-of- a-kind luxury resort experience, one that includes both direct access to the mountain and to the lake, a first for the Lake Tahoe region.” The new Lake Club will begin to welcome resort guests in the summer of 2017. This is the 12th year of FYF, which exploded in popularity and began to draw A-list headliners shortly after its inception. Other acts to catch on day one include Grimes, the L.A.-based, FYF FEST Vancouver-born pop singer whose latest album, Art Angels, was one of 2016 Exposition Park 2015’s best reviewed releases. LITTLE GUYS, BIG HEART RENOWNED OPENLY GAY filmmaker Ira Sachs (Love is Strange, Keep the Lights On) returns to local theaters on Aug. 12 with his latest insightful work, Little Men. Starring Greg Kinnear and two young newcomers, Michael Barbieri and Theo Taplitz (pictured above from left), it’s a film about two young boys who are forced to deal with the problems of their parents. When Theo’s (Taplitz) family moves to Brooklyn, he becomes fast friends with the charismatic Tony (Barbieri). But how can the young friendship survive when a feud ignites between their parents? Little Men is a look at the effects of neighborhood gentrification—something all too familiar for big-city dwellers—but also the strenuous bonds of close friends and family. It’s a brilliant next step in the career of one of film’s latest generation of auteurs. —Stephan Horbelt

Breakout web series Those Damn Canadians seeks to answer age-old questions about love and life in Hollywood

I

f winning awards is the end game, then Those Damned Canadians has won, as the series has garnered more accolades on the web-based film circuit than any of its competition. The show has been described as a gay take on Curb Your Enthusiasm, with one critic saying of the series, “Each episode runs around eight minutes, and they’re marvels of storytelling. Each one is a chapter in an ongoing story while still featuring at least one standout scene that somehow has room to breathe in the short runtime.“ It takes a truly talented writer to engineer episodes at this length that spotlight sophisticated storytelling and feel satisfying, and that person is cocreator and actress Sara Botsford. Carrying the show on his shoulders is actor Christopher Shyer, who plays Dick Reddick, the hapless hero of the whole enterprise. Dick—who is approaching middle age and still wrestling with coming out in some respects—generates the thrust of the series’ humor. Botsford provides a bit of background on Shyer’s character: “Since Dick was a cute little rascal, living in Toronto, dressing up in his mother’s clothes, AUGUST 31, 2016

he has wanted nothing else but to be an actor. He spent hours and hours singing to himself in the mirror, making different faces, trying on different outfits. During the summer he was a backup dancer at Canada’s Wonderland. He got small parts in TV shows, and did a lot of free theater, until he met Shelli. She was the first person to believe in him, and she is determined that he is ready for the big time. But is the big time ready for him?” Shyer, who’s probably best known for starring in The Book of Mormon and other Broadway shows, is definitely the break out star of Those Damn Canadians. The openly gay actor says he’s drawn on some of his more challenging experiences as an actor to bring Dick to life. “He isn’t so much guileless as naïve to the ways of the world, and he’s a very trusting character in a place that doesn’t reward trust,” Shyer says. Consider Lynda Boyd the show’s other breakout star. She plays Shelli, Dick’s agent and housemate who is often Dick’s biggest booster but also his biggest hindrance. Rounding out the cast’s standouts is Dylan Ramsey, who plays dreamThose Damn boat Brad Depp, a man full of not-so-deep thoughts. FrontiersMedia.com Botsford and fellow creator Christopher Brown drew on many of their own experiences when conceiving the series, and the couple continues to maintain successful careers—Brown as an VFX supervisor and Botsford as an actress, although if Those Damn Canadians is any indication, she’ll be a showrunner soon enough. As is the case with much programming that reaches its audience via nontraditional channels, the series’ storylines and talented cast of characters have more depth, subtlety and believability than the majority of traditionally crafted, scripted television series. Equally impressive is the show’s refusal to turn any character into an object of derision. For all their seemingly vacuous vanity and ego-driven foibles, the characters of Those Damn Canadians are essentially good people. The entire series is infused with a benign joy and heartfelt warmth that is irresistible. Add the show to your must-watch list now. —Savas Abadsidis

Track Record:

Culture Club T

here may be more critically lauded artists playing L.A. this month—Radiohead and PJ Harvey come to mind—but did anyone change not only the musical but the social landscape as much as Culture Club did in 1982? Without the group’s pop smarts and androgynous style, it’s unlikely we’d have as many out performers as we do now, from Bright Light Bright Light to Troye Sivan and so many more. Boy George and his reconstituted band play the Hollywood Bowl on Aug. 26 and 27, alongside the L.A. Philharmonic. Here are 10 of Culture Club’s best tracks to consider before making the pilgrimage to pay your respects. —Dan Loughry

10. “More Than Silence” (2014)

The biggest surprise about the band’s first single in 15 years—from the forthcoming release Tribes— isn’t the catchy chorus or effortlessness of the music (their best is always light on its feet), but the heaviness in Boy George’s voice, which is perfect for the melancholy at its heart.

9. “Miss Me Blind” (1983)

This minor single from the worlddominating Colour by Numbers is a cool kiss-off delivered in George’s lightest fashion. Per formed recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, it sounded as fresh as yesterday.

8. “Cold Shoulder” (1999)

Their first reunion album in 1999, Don’t Mind If I Do, came and went without much notice, but this was a breezy soul number that showed off George’s delicate touch to perfection.

7. “Move Away” (1986)

Though From Luxury to Heartache was the e nd of the band ’s 38 FRONTIERSMEDIA.COM

commercial highpoint, I’ve always preferred it to the misshapen Waking Up with the House on Fire. And though the band may have been imploding behind the scenes in a spectacular VH-1 Behind the Music way, you’d never know from the recorded evidence.

6. “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” (1982)

Lots of bad New Wave dancing was inspired by this Caribbeaninflected dance track off their debut Kissing to Be Clever.

5. “The War Song” (1984)

Waking Up with the House on Fire was a mess, but this simplistic anti-war song was a ballsy move for shallow pop stars on top of the world

4. “Sexuality” (1986)

As New Wave came to its sputtering end, the boys lit up another dance track—replete with cheesy ’80s saxophone—about the joys of (pan)sexuality.

3. “Church of the Poison Mind” (1983)

A big hit back in the day, this tune thrived due to the screaming soul vocals of the diminutive Helen Terry.

2. “Karma Chameleon” (1983)

No doubt helping them win the Best New Artist Grammy, this massive hit cemented the still young Culture Club’s commercial viability while highlighting their fluid genre (not to mention gender) hopping.

1. “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” (1982)

The answer to the title question, for many confused young pop lovers in 1982, was yes. They really did want to hurt Boy George. But he was such a lovable and sincere presence—along with his photogenic bandmates Roy Hay (guitar/ keyboards), Mikey Craig (bass) and Jon Moss (drums)—that the band broke through on the U.S. charts. And though we can put more import towards the barriers it helped shatter, the song was a success because it was—and still is—a classic.

5 SHOWS YOU SHOULD BE BINGING, LIKE, YESTERDAY

I

t’s summer, it’s hot, everything on TV is reruns and you’ve watched every Designing Women episode on YouTube. (That’s right, they’re all there.) Sure, you could go out and exercise, but that’s not happening. You could read a book, but that’s stupid. Don’t worry, we got you. Here are five shows you should be binging immediately.

Difficult People The new season of Julie Klausner’s and Billy Eichner’s uh-mazing buddy comedy Difficult People is upon us. If you haven’t watched the misadventures of Billy and Julie, now is the time to join the party. Not only is the show flat-out hysterical, bug Eichner’s Billy Epstein is about as realistic a portrayal of a gay man as you can get on a TV comedy. All eight episodes of Season 1 are available on Hulu right now. It’ll take you four hours. What are you waiting for?

Lady Dynamite

VINYL ON DEMAND

A boon for local vinyl-spinning DJs, the new site Vinylize.it (launched July 12) aims to match LP lovers with musicians in much the same way Airbnb finds a bed for the weary traveler. Let’s say you’ve found a new favorite artist on SoundCloud, but his work isn’t pressed to vinyl. With Vinylize.it, the production process is flipped on its head; you can import your favorite tracks, and once 20-30 fellow fans are on board, the site will find the artist and work to get the music pressed to vinyl. Welcome to the 21st century. —S.H.

If you watch all 12 episodes of Lady Dynamite in one sitting, it’s akin to taking all the LSD. Maria Bamford’s semi-autobiographical Netflix sitcom about her mental breakdown is, somehow, even weirder than it sounds. Featuring lots of fourth wall breaking, surprise cameos and random appearances by farm animals, Lady Dynamite is a show with heart. It’s a weird heart that talks in a funny accent and only drinks peppermint tea, but it’s a heart nonetheless.

Great British Baking Show Don’t ask me why, but watching overly polite British people bake obscure European treats, worrying about soggy bottoms and massive puds, is brilliantly and spectacularly compelling television. Think Top Chef but everything is dessert and everyone has bad teeth, and you’re only halfway to the appeal of The Great British Baking Show. The judges (silver fox Paul Hollywood and the adorable Mary Berry) and oddball hosts Mel & Sue are the secret ingredient in this oddly addictive recipe. The new season is airing on PBS, but you can catch previous seasons streaming at PBS.org.

The Real O’Neals Finally a show about LGBT youth that’s neither patronizing nor preachy. This is a show you can sit down and watch with your less-than-accepting mother, then watch the gears in her head turn. The Real O’Neals is quietly groundbreaking, and increasingly hilarious. Watch all 13 episodes on ABC.com so you can catch up before the new season begins in September.

Netflix’s third series in its Defenders lineup, following Daredevil and Jessica Jones, stars Mike Colter as the Harlem crime-fighter with impenetrable skin. Alfre Woodard co-stars. (Available Sept. 30)

HATERS BACK OFF

Colleen Ballinger stars as Miranda Sings, a YouTube singer-dancer-actormodel-musician who doesn’t seem to realize she’s devoid of all talent. This one should be a hoot. (Available Oct. 14)

The Family If you’re craving a little drama and intrigue this summer, you can’t go wrong with ABC’s short-lived The Family. All 13 gripping episodes are still available on ABC.com. The season offers a complete storyline, so no worries of being left hanging. It follows a politician’s life after her son is abducted. Ten years later, he shows up on her doorstep. But is he who he says he is? I’m not telling. You’ll have to watch. —Dominik Rothbard

PACK LIKE A PRO 6 tips on how to travel well-equipped for fun and adventure

I

f there’s one aspect of traveling that most people dread, it’s packing. Set off too light and you run the risk of having to spring for extras while on vacay. Stuff your suitcase to the gills and you’ll need to make a date with a chiropractor when you get home—not to mention the potential baggage overcharges you may incur in the interim. To avoid both these scenarios, lifestyle expert Bob Caputo details his packing best practices for your next easy-breezy getaway.

1. Make a list of what to pack a few days in advance Avoid throwing half your closet into your bags in a last-minute frenzy. Give yourself at least 24 hours lead-time to start prepping your belongings so the essentials are covered and nothing is left behind. “Make a master list of the items you normally bring on trips— clothes, toiletries, computer and phone charger, medicines, workout gear and sunglasses,” Caputo suggests. “Print the list out and check off the items as you pack them.”

2 . Plan your outfits, and color-coordinate

FROM LEFT: Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo, Berlin’s Museum Island, Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien

Save Joseph’s Amazing Technicolor Wardrobe for your local Pride celebration. When traveling, choose items wisely—and sparingly—so they can be mixed, matched and get more individual mileage. “You might want to bring all outfits that are black, for example; by using that black jacket with several outfits, you can pack less and still look great,” says Caputo. “Select accessories that also can be used with several outfits. Chances are nobody is going to see you every day and judge you if you repeat outfits.”

3. Select clothes that are lightweight

Renzo Piano’s billowing architecture for the Astrup Fearnley Museum. From atop Sneak Peak, Tjuvholmen’s 300-foot observation tower, you get a splendid vista of Oslo’s maritime setting. For another perspective on Norwegian art, spend an afternoon at Vigeland Park, which features more than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, including many nude Norwegian males placed amidst a half-mile axis of serene walkways and lush lawns. VIENNA Voted the world’s most livable city for the past six years, Vienna has conjoined its imperial majesty with contemporary style. Consider, for example, the “Queen of Austria,” Conchita Wurst, winner of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. Built in 1891, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien houses the world’s largest Bruegel collection, as well as the Kunsthammer, a 2,200-item collection of fabulous

curiosities amassed by the ruling Habsburgs from the late Middle Ages to the Baroque era. Each year, Vienna Design Week transforms the city into a giant design showroom, with numerous installations, exhibitions and parties—while Long Night of Museums offers access to more than 100 museums all night long. Located amidst the city’s massive art complex MuseumsQuartier, mumok offers the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Central Europe with more than 9,600 works. —M.A.T.

Carefully consider the materials that make up your wardrobe when packing. A pair of jeans weighs as much as two pairs of regular pants, says Caputo, and nylon shirts and shorts weigh much less than cotton, plus they can be washed in the bathroom sink.

4. Ease up on the toiletries To save space in your luggage— and to prevent a headache at airport security—leave more common toiletries at home. Most hotels provide everything you need to stay fresh and clean, and these items are included in the price you’ve already paid.

5. Ditch the books and read from your devices Instead of bringing paperback books to read, download electronic versions to your tablet or notebook. And download movies to watch when transportation boredom sets in. To save even more space, you could download them onto your phone.

6. Make photocopies of important documents You’ll never be stranded if you practice common sense. “Bring a photocopy of your driver’s license, passport and medical insurance cards in your carry-on,” Caputo advises. “Also, keep pictures of the documents on your phone. This way, if you lose them or if you’re robbed, you’ll still have your vital info.” —M.R.

t was French author André Gide who said, “It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves—in finding themselves.” How true. For it is only in those moments of uncertainty, unbalance and unexplained wonder that we truly grasp who we are and who we could be. In that spirit, let your travels be the gateway to adventure, and perhaps you’ll find yourself in one of these spectacular destinations.

GREENLAND This once-inaccessible landmass in the great white north is also one of the world’s most exciting undiscovered adventure destinations. Visitors have their choice of high-adrenaline activities, including dog-sledding on the vast tundra, snowmobiling across limitless ice fields, whale watching in some of the world’s most pristine waters and hiking

massive glaciers. The town of Ilulissat, with its famous painted houses, is the main staging point for many of these, as well as multi-day treks to the nearby fjords. September-April this year will be one of the best times in living memory to see the aurora borealis, so book a ticket soon. Catch flights to Nuuk, the capital, from Reykjavik or Copenhagen. BOTSWANA First-time safarigoers might opt for South Africa or Tanzania, but Botswana is not only among the most stable countries in Africa, it also boasts some of the continent’s most eco-rich national parks. Its awesome landscapes include the fertile Okavango Delta, where visitors can have the unique experience of a canoe safari, exploring its myriad waterways at eye-level with wildlife. Splurge on a

stay at Belmond Eagle Island Lodge for a one-of-a-kind safari experience and bespoke excursions. For a taste of something different, head to the Central Kalahari Game reserve, where you can spot rare cheetahs in the wild. NORTHERN TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA It might have been the setting for Crocodile Dundee, but Australia’s Northern Territory is truly one of the world’s great wildernesses. For firsttimers, the place to visit is Kakadu National Park, just a few hours’ drive from Darwin. Book a stay at a luxury camp like Bamurru Plains and spend your days air-boating over the Mary River Wetlands (beware the crocs!), trekking with Aborigines to millennium-old cave paintings and helicoptering over herds of water buffalo. Those with a more independent streak can rent a caravan and explore the park’s byways and billabongs on their own of the course of weeks or even months.

MONGOLIA Mongolia spent much of the 20th century sequestered from the rest of the world, so it’s easy to forget that nomads from its vast grasslands and deserts once forged an empire stretching from the Pacific to Europe. uxury means different things to different people. For some, it’s as simple as having something done for you that you’d normally have to do yourself. For others, it implies grandscale decadence, immersive attractions and elegant amenities that set a place or experience apart from all other options. In singular ways, these five destinations subscribe to all of those definitions, representing perfect vacation getaways for lovers of the luxe. PALMA DE MALLORCA In addition to its safe harbor for the mega-yachts of the über-wealthy, Palma de Mallorca has long been known as a popular playground for the rich and royal of Spain’s Balearic Isles. Former King Juan Carlos is often spotted taking a break from his duties at the island’s swankier watering holes, while other boldfaced names—from Michael Douglas 48

FRONTIERSMEDIA.COM

and Catherine Zeta Jones, who until recently owned a 247-acre estate on the island, to Paris Hilton—have all made the pilgrimage to this rustically luxurious spot. For the most luxe stay of all, the Belmond La Residencia, Deia, is the leading choice. Once owned by Richard Branson, it’s the luxury hotel in which Princess Diana famously took refuge when her marriage to Charles reached its well-publicized breaking point, and it’s also the site of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 60th birthday celebration, for which the entire hotel was hired. How’s that for discriminating? Best of all, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera are all just a s h o r t fe r r y ride away. LAS VEGAS The most common misconception about Las Vegas is that its primary

appeal is gaming. The truth is there’s so much more to do in Sin City than take turns among the plentiful blackjack tables and slot machines. In fact, with very little effort, you can treat yourself to a luxe holiday with no gambling whatsoever—easy given that there’s more luxury per square foot here than almost anywhere in the world. Wondering where to start? There’s pampering at a memorable array of spas, like the sleek, modern BATHHOUSE Spa at the Delano, the massive 80,000-squarefoot Spa at the Aria and the serenely gorgeous Spa at the Mandarin Oriental. Combined with upscale shopping experiences at the Wynn Esplanade and the Shops at Crystals, fine dining at restaurants helmed by revered chefs— Alain Ducasse’s Rivea at the Delano, Julian Serrano’s Lago at the Bellagio and Michael Mina’s Bardot Brasserie at the Aria—an assortment of shows featuring the biggest names in music and entertainment and VIP limo service to and from everything, what could make for a more decadent getaway?

LONDON It’s fitting that home for the British royal family would also house an escape filled with luxe delights. From the old-world elegance of the Goring H o t e l (w h e r e Queen Elizabeth II is a regular guest for afternoon tea) to th e s u m p tu ous retail offerings of Bond Street and Dover Street (w h e r e V i c t o r i a Beckham opened the flagship store for her wildly successful eponymous clothing line) to the five-star hotels in May Fair and Knightsbridge (think the classically sophisticated Egerton House, the landmark Claridge’s, the esteemed Connaught and the Firmdale Hotel’s Knightsbridge outpost), luxury is London’s forte. Fill your itinerary with visits to the certified providers of goods and services to the royal household and you’ll find yourself in luxe overload.

CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA If there’s one word that best describes this seaside town, it would be surreal. Santa Barbara may be heralded by many as California’s answer to the Riviera, but Carmel-by-the-Sea is endowed with a better claim to the title. A charming boutiquefilled town commingled with an unspoiled beach dramatically surrounded by bluffs and a rugged coastline evokes the feeling of la dolce vita best embodied by the likes of Capri and St. Tropez. Among the favorite stops for an elegant stay in Carmel is the Doris Day-owned Cypress Inn in the heart of town and the Clint Eastwood-owned Mission Ranch, where the vistas (along with the company at the bar) are otherworldly. flow of rum-inspired cocktails and not a care in the world make Turks and Caicos a standout among luxe travel getaways. Moreover, if a destination is to be judged by the star power of its regular visitors, it’s a winner on multiple levels. Among the islands’ starry visitors of late are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who spent their holidays at Donna Karan’s villa in Parrot Cay; Justin Bieber; Christie Brinkley; and newlyweds Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, who spent their sevenday honeymoon holed up in a remote villa at the exclusive Parrot Cay Resort. by Charlie Cochrane A nearby murder thrusts inspector Robin Bright into an intricate web of crimes, but there’s something more curious about this case: An old crush of Robin’s lover Adam pops up in the investigation, ultimately jeopardizing the happy couple’s relationship in this homo whodunit. The Scheme of Things by Tim Parks Henry Dodge does his best to hide what makes him different from the other boys—like his burgeoning lust for his brother’s best friend Danny—by escaping into TV, movies and music of the ‘80s. His affinity for soap operas leads him to follow Danny to Los Angeles, uncharted territory for the teen that has secrets of its own. (442 pp., $36, Page Publishing)

Hiatus by L.A. Witt Three boyfriends try to make a ménage à trois work over the long term. Just when it seems like it couldn’t be more idyllic, a roadblock on the path to triangular happiness—the original couple starts to question their love for one another while still holding a torch for the third. or some, vacation isn’t all about relaxation. Or, I should say, some people are at their most relaxed with a couple vodka-sodas in their gut, twirling on a dance floor or floating like a butterfly among throngs of fellow revelers on a bar’s smoking patio. For these individuals—gay men who seek drunks, DJs, drag queens and various other creatures of the night while on holiday—there are cities the world over whose nightlife scenes are the stuff of legend. These are but a few tried-andtrue favorites. SAN FRANCISCO The Bay Area—a prime locale for the Angeleno who only has the weekend to spare—has a ton to offer those seeking boozy nights amidst a new

crowd of hunky men. Much like our own SoCal city, it boasts two markedly different gay scenes, made up of West Hollywood-like gay ghetto The Castro and the more rough-and-tumble neighborhood of SoMa.Book your travel right and you’ll start your evening out with one of Peaches Christ’s legendary stage parodies at the Castro Theatre. Past productions—generally starring Drag Race queens—have included She-Devil, Sister Act and Hocus Pocus. Those looking to spend the rest of their evening in the Castro can hop between 440 for draft beers, Badlands for a sweaty dance floor or popular video bar Midnight Sun for Top 40 and a drag performance. Those seeking beards,

leather and even cheaper drinks can head South of Market to mainstays SF Eagle, Lone Star Saloon and the Heklinaowned club (w h i c h a l s o hosts the weekly drag night Mother) Oasis. Come 2 a.m., those willing to carouse with heteros (and pay a stiff cover) can party ‘til morning at The Endup, open til 8 a.m. on weekends. These stars’ favorite destinations and summer memories make them all the more down to earth “I fell in love with Brazil many years ago and go back there as often as I can, although I don’t get there as much as I’d like. “First I was like, OK, what kind of dish is that, and when they explained what it was and how they cooked the food under the sand with hot rocks—white-hot rocks, covering it with palm leaves, letting it sit there overnight—that whole process in itself sounded amazing, and so to actually be there and watching them uncover the sand and uncovering the palms with this amazing chicken, this amazing lunch that they had all prepared for us, it was incredible to see that they still do that.” —Pretty Little Liars’ Shay Mitchell, on experiencing the traditional Fijian cuisine called lovo “I just returned from my wedding and honeymoon in Corfu, Greece, which took place in July. It was so hot, and one of my favorite memories from the trip was right after our wedding reception—coming out of the pool to see my entire wedding party diving headfirst in. That was crazy! are perfect pre-gaming spots), a night of dancing to the gay divas (you’ll want to join the young crowd at G-A-Y Bar) or a night of campy drag, live music or cabaret (all of which is offered at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern), you can find it here. The one event not to be missed by those seeking hairy men and hedonism—and, really, who isn’t?—is Horse Meat Disco, a party that sees the world-famous DJ collective take over the dance floor of Eagle London every Sunday night. It’s an assuredly packed crowd, and a guaranteed good time. MONTRÉAL You’d be hard-pressed to find a city more ready, willing

and able to party than Montréal during its annual Black & Blue Festival, which coincidentally celebrates its quartercentury anniversay this October. But the city is a lively one after dark nonetheless; simply head to the gay village of Saint Catherine Street (a pedestrian street from May to September) to have every type of night out at your disposal. You’ll find drag each night of the week at Cabaret Mado, which doubles as a popular dancing spot. Those seeking raunch and fetish gear should head to L’Aigle Noir (the city’s own Eagle establishment), and head back for a Sunday afternoon spent on the rooftop patio. Take your pick of hip-hop, house or pop music at Complexe Sky, Canada’s largest gay club, which offers four floors and a pool and hot tub on the terrace. And those looking for the attention of male strippers—who regularly strip down completely and are quick to offer you a lap dance—should head to Campus or Stock Bar in the village. —S.H.

“The first ‘big’ vacation we ever took as a couple—about six months into our relationship —was to Nice, France. We landed there on September 11, 2001, as news was breaking about the terrorist attacks. The outpouring of love and concern shown to us underscores the importance of travel. The more you see the world, the more you understand what similarities and compassion you share. Now that we’ve traveled to some of the most far-flung places in the world, we realize that there’s far more vitriol in the headlines than there is on the ground.” —Brent Ridge, one-half of The Fabulous Beekman Boys, who, with partner Josh Kilmer-Purcell, recently launched Beekman 1802 Trips of a Lifetime “When I was a kid growing up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, we didn’t go away much. My family’s idea of a getaway was driving 15 minutes to the nearby restaurant Spumoni Gardens—which was exactly what it sounded like—and that was actually good enough for me. We’d order delicious spumoni—a real treat, basically ice cream layered with candied fruit mixed in—and sit down on the outdoor benches and make a real adventure out of it. Other kids were probably luxuriating on the Riviera, but I was having my own kind of exotic experience, Bensonhurst-style.” —author and journalist Michael Musto

O

n Aug. 1, London-based photographer Dylan Rosser released his latest collection of male nude photography, Naked Ibiza, shot over four years on the Balearic isle. Finished using Kickstarter, and raising more than twice its goal—nearly $20,000—Rosser’s work is always a hit with both critics and fans. Frontiers sat down with the photographer to discuss his latest work, as well as what’s next for one of the industry’s leading . What is your connection to Ibiza? My ex-boyfriend took me there in 2000 for the first time. I was of course much younger, and it was a different experience then. It was more about late nights and partying and, to be honest, I never got to see much of the island. After we broke up a few years later, I decided to go back on my own. I’m not really a party guy, and I was a bit worried about whether I’d enjoy it going solo, but I did. I relaxed and got to enjoy the “chill” side of Ibiza, which is more the inspiration for the book. What is your background as a photographer? I never studied photography; my background is design. But after 15 to 20 years doing this, you pick things up along the way and teach yourself. Having used Photoshop in my design work over two decades has certainly helped, and that plays a big part in creating the final image. Tell me about the process of creating Naked Ibiza. I had done many books already, and they were all based indoors—in studios and hotels. I was a bit tired of seeing my own work, and I really needed to find a new challenge or direction. I wanted to shoot outdoors, and so in 2012 I decided to rent a house in Ibiza for a couple of weeks and invited some models and friends to come stay with me. I was not 100 percent sure what the results would be at that point, so it was more of a way to test the waters. In fact, I did not use many images from that year in the book. I moved over to Ibiza at the end of 2013 to really focus on the book. I would have these amazing guys come to visit me from all over the world, and we would get to shoot in a very relaxed way. How did you become a photographer mostly interested in the male nude form? My design job was not really creative or rewarding. Anyone who has met me will know how shy I am, so it’s not always easy working with and meeting new people, especially having to tell them to get naked. I can’t go up to someone and ask them to pose for me, so I used a gay dating site—Gaydar—as a way to approach guys and ask them if they were interested in posing. What catches your eye when you’re shooting? Do you know when you’ve hit a great shot, or does that realization come when you look over your work later on? It’s both, really. Especially with the outdoor stuff, you can create really beautiful compositions that you can see working in-camera, and you know straight away what you are going to do with that image and how it will look. But sometimes I’m shooting and it’s just not working in my head; so then I need to wait until I get in front of the computer and try to find shots that can work with just a bit of Photoshop help or recropping an image to give it more impact. In fact, often I will look back at old shoots from five to 10 years ago and see something I missed, something that could potentially be a great image.

What else are you working on right now? I have a few different book ideas, but I think the main focus for the next few years will be Naked California. I have spent a lot of time in L.A., and the state does offer a huge range of varying locations—from sea to mountains to forests to deserts. So if any hot guys in California have a car and want to go on road trips to shoot, they should get in touch!

What does that say about me? Hmmm. That I’m a slut?” It’s now onwards and upwards for this local party promoter and actor, who will soon have a brand-new space to spiff up and call home.

hat drew this actor, director and screenwriter to his Hollywood home? “I loved the light, the openness and how modern it felt,” he says. “Plus, it’s close to the gym—you know, priorities.” An alum of Showtime’s classic gay series Queer as Folk, Paige is now telling stories from behind the camera as the co-creator and executive producer of The Fosters, which airs on Freeform. And his home tells a story, too. “My place is part-gentleman, part-playboy—old-world meets ultra-modern. I wanted a place that was warm but tasteful, well-appointed yet still welcoming, and that served as a good backdrop for the art I’ve collected over the years,” he says. “But mostly, I wanted something that felt like me. Like an outfit I’d wear to a great party. As for what it says about me, I think it says quite a bit. I feel like when you walk into the space, you know me a little better. I like that.” Paige himself had a hand in the home’s most jaw-dropping design element—the 18-foot bookcase you see pictured above. “I designed it myself. It gives the loft some much-needed storage, and is a major focal point. Now I can’t imagine the place without it.” AUGUST 31, 2016

here are few men in Los Angeles who work as hard or as often as this actor and writer. From now until the fall, you’ll find him on a wide swath of series that include the third season of Transparent, Netflix’s upcoming return to Gilmore Girls, Documentary Now, Major Crimes and more— and with a schedule that packed, time spent at his Hollywood Hills home is all the more valuable. “I live in my friend Busy Philipps’ guest-house, and what drew me there was her and her husband very kindly and graciously agreeing to let me move in!” he says with a laugh. “It’s a gorgeous Old Hollywood home. With a pool. And parking. Perfect.” Among his favorite design elements inside are the one-ofa-kind bookcases a friend gave him—which used to reside in the window of the Beverly Hills Ferragamo store—and “the ever-changing collage above my desk that reflects the chaos in my brain.” When it comes to decorating his place, Pancake jokingly describes his personal style as “mid-century rich friends’ hand-me-downs,” saying, “One day I’ll have my own house completely designed and decorated by me, but this is perfect for now.”

t was the large garden, with views of the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory, that drew this internationally renowned photographer to his 1921 Spanish-style home, but it was the neighborhood’s history and bohemian nature that drew Young to the Sunset Junction part of Silver Lake. “I love this neighborhood so much, and it’s been the home of many queer artists; people like Judie Bamber, Zackary Drucker, Matt Lipps, Squeaky Blonde, Anaïs Nin, Ron Athey, Vaginal Davis.” Young has himself added to the neighborhood’s history, as his two-lot home has been the set of much of his art, from music videos for Jackie Beat to photographs of Margaret Cho, Joe Dallesandro and Siouxsie Sioux. As for his personal brand of home décor style, Young says, “I have a collection of art from friends, junk stores and of course some of my own photography. I’m fascinated by culture and love finding its discarded remnants in thrift stores and garage sales. I like the walls to offer stories, inspiration and humor. I’m a visual person, so you could probably learn more about me by coming to my house than knowing me for several years.” Young’s home is filled with color, texture and pattern, and with his art collective Fallen Fruit (comprised of himself and David Burns, fallenfruit.org), he designs amazing wallpaper. SPLASH HOUSE RETURNS Palm Springs’ most epic pool party weekend returns for a second summer installment By Stephan Horbelt

L

ater this month, there’s only one place to be for those who consider themselves true pool party devotees, and that’s at Splash House, which returns for the second time this summer the weekend of Aug. 12-14 (after previously taking place the weekend of July 10-12). For those not familiar with the local pool party-slash-music festival, here’s the gist: Splash House takes place at two desert venues, Riviera Palm Springs and The Saguaro. Shuttles run between the two hotels nonstop throughout the weekend, which lets you hop freely between the stages to hear your favorite DJs spin poolside. Artists performing at the August installment include English garage duo Gorgon City, French nü-disco DJ Jean Tonique, Detroit house expert Marc Kinchen (MK), Aussie electronic artist Dom Dolla and scores more. In the past, famed acts including Moby, Cut Copy and Chromeo have done guest spots. Friday evening’s opening night party and Saturday evening’s after-party will see sets by Sydney dance group Rüfüs du Sol and Berlin-based DJ Claptone at the Palm Springs Air Museum, for which $40 tickets are purchased separately. For those looking to splurge on VIP cabanas and day beds, those are also available for purchase. While Splash House offers discounted packages for a stay at the two host hotels, attendees are free to stay wherever they like (and host hotel packages are sold-out anyhow). Guests are encouraged to bring plenty of sunscreen, pool towels, floaties, costumes and—for those staying on-site—balcony decorations.

Celebrity guests including big-name cosplay artists, Flash Gordon himself Sam Jones and Bai Ling will be in attendance, prepared to snap pictures with adoring fans. The original Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno, will also be present. And perhaps the event’s biggest coups: comic book legend Stan Lee—the man who created some of the greatest characters of all time in Spider-Man and The X-Men—will sign autographs and appear at a special VIP meet and greet. THE WORLD OF BILLY MASTERS From left: Christine Ebersole, Alex Bowen, Patti LuPone, Danell Leyva, Robby Hayes, Draymond Green

LUPONE AND EBERSOLE GO TO ‘WAR,’ ‘BACHELORETTE’ DRAMA, OUR FAVORITE HUNKY OLYMPIAN IS SET TO COMPETE Kiss and Makeup Theater devotees are flocking to Chicago for the chance to see Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole star together in the new musical War Paint, the musicalized story of cosmetic mavens Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. It’s a curious thing to form a show around two women who never actually met despite having so much in common (including swapping the men in their lives). Most of the show is done in parallel scenes on opposite sides of the stage, with the ladies only meeting face-to-face in a fictitious late-life encounter. Despite both women’s success, they are victims of their own ambition, of the times and of their inability to change. Arden is not allowed to join an exclusive club (which she helped design) because “for a woman to have money is one thing. But to earn it? Surely you understand that changes things.” Likewise, Rubinstein is discriminated against when trying to buy a penthouse because of her ethnicity. Recounting this episode, LuPone’s Rubinstein is sanguine: “So, what did I do? Did I cry like a child? Do I walk away? No, I buy the building instead!” Shades of Evita. Both LuPone and Ebersole are at the top of their game. Both are actresses of extraordinary caliber whose vocal abilities are two sides of the same coin: Ebersole a cooler, purer soprano, LuPone more idiosyncratic, guttural and harsh. These vocal attributes fit the characters ideally; not surprising, since the roles were written for them. And yet there are times when the singers swap harmonies with striking dramatic results. It made me wonder how each would play the other’s role. It’s a challenge that perhaps they’ll tackle one day. For now, the show has been extended at Chicago’s Goodman until Aug. 21 (if you can get a ticket). I don’t think it’s too early to anticipate a very healthy Broadway run shortly thereafter—after a bit of tweaking and judicious pruning. While only a few scant seconds 64

of video have been released, you won’t be surprised to hear that quite a bit more has made its way into my rather well-worn lap. A certain someone has supplied us with fantastic footage of the full final face-off. And the only place you’ll see these fabulous 15 minutes is on my site. Playing it Straight The Bachelorette has been causing controversy all summer—and most of it is due to Chad Johnson. In last week’s “The Men Tell All” episode, he claimed to have hooked up with at least three of his former castmates’ ex-girlfriends. He also took shots at the two finalists: Jordan isn’t there for the right reasons, just wanting fame, and Robby dumped his girlfriend the moment he got cast on the show. (She’s one of the exes Johnson claims to have hooked up with.) In case that bit of slander didn’t stick, Johnson also questioned Robby’s sexuality by tweeting, “If I have to watch @RobbyHHayes pretend to like women for one more second on #The Bachelorette, I’m gonna blow my head off.” While I wish it were true, I somehow doubt it. If Robby were gay, he’d have better hair! Doggone Olympics With the Olympics looming large, we were thinking about hunky gymnast Danell Leyva. You may remember the Cuban-American from four years ago, when we ran a series of nearly nude photos that came from his cell phone, to say nothing of a nude workout pictorial (found on my site). Believe it or not, Leyva—the only U.S. gymnast to win a medal at the 2012 London Olympics (the bronze for all-around gymnast)—was an alternate on this year’s team. But he’s been moved up due to a teammate’s knee injury. It’s ironic that an injury worked to Leyva’s advantage, since an injury is what kept him off the

team in the first place. Days before a key qualifying meet, he was left with several gaping wounds on his legs and hands after trying to separate two of his pitbulls! And this isn’t a first: four years ago, he had to get 80 stitches near his ear after being bitten by the same dogs days before the American Cup! I don’t even think Betty White would object to both dogs being put down after this latest attack. Ask Billy: A DDD Many have written in the same “Ask Billy” question, but the e-mail from Kurt in Dallas was the first I received: “Who is Alex Bowen, and is that photo of his penis real? It can’t really be that big!” Bowen is a fitness model who appeared on Love Island, a UK dating show. At the time, he listed his occupation as “scaffolder,” but I doubt he’s done much scaffolding lately. A photo of him flaunting his phenomenal physique and sporting a borderline double-digit dick mysteriously popped up in public and virtually broke the internet—to say nothing of countless orifices. In fact, the hoopla made its way across the seas, leading many of you to write in wanting to see all. Ask and you shall receive, on my site. When a penis can double as a scaffold, it’s definitely time to end yet another column. Before we wrap up, we’re gonna slip in one last dick. Basketball player Draymond Green claimed a penis pic that appeared on his Snapchat feed was due to his phone being hacked. He quickly changed his story, saying it was meant to be private, but he hit the wrong button. His erect penis will hit all the right buttons on BillyMasters.com, the site that’s always on the ball. If you have something you’d like us to look into, write to Billy@BillyMasters.com, and I promise to get back to you before I get cast in a touring production of Phantom. So, until next time, remember, one man’s filth is another man’s bible.
