A
first-of-its-kind bill to boost awareness of preexposure prophylaxis (commonly referred to as PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent HIV infection officially reached the desk of California Gov. Jerry Brown on Aug. 25 after receiving strong support in both the state Senate and Assembly. AB 2640 is the first statewide legislation of its kind anywhere in the country, and it would make sure that patients are informed about PrEP, PEP and other HIV prevention measures following any test for the virus. Existing law simply requires medical care providers and those administering HIV tests to advise on the need for periodic retesting, the limitations of current testing technology and the window period for results verification. The West Hollywood City Council recently voted through a similar requirement, and this new bill would expand that measure across all of California. The bill has been backed by both the L.A. LGBT Center and APLA Health. They say that while more people than ever are taking PrEP and other precautions to prevent HIV infection, the tools are still worryingly unknown among those groups most at risk of contracting the virus. According to a 2015 survey of gay and bisexual men by the California HIV/AIDS Research Program, only 1 in 10 respondents had ever used PrEP; nearly 85% had never talked to their doctor about the HIV prevention strategy. “Alarmingly, awareness of PrEP and PEP is particularly low for those most at risk of HIV infection in California: Black and Latino men who are gay or bisexual,” Los Angeles LGBT Center Medical Director Dr. Robert Bolan says. “By signing this common sense legislation, Gov. Brown will help people receive information about how to protect themselves and promote more open dialogue about sexual health between medical providers and patients.” “It is estimated that one in two black gay men and
one in four Latino gay men will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime if infection rates continue to rise. This is unconscionable. Women of color and transgender individuals are also among the groups at greatest risk for HIV,” says Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson, who originated AB 2640. “We now have effective tools like PrEP and PEP that can help end the HIV epidemic, but that won’t happen unless people know about them. We must do more to make sure that people know about the tools available to protect themselves.” “We are very pleased that the legislature has taken this important step toward increasing awareness of PrEP and PEP in California,” APLA Health CEO Craig E. Thompson says, echoing the call for Gov. Brown to sign the bill into law. “These prevention tools are keys to ending the spread of HIV, and this bill will ensure that everyone who takes an HIV test is provided with accurate information about how to protect themselves.” AB 2640 became a focal point for discussion of PrEP earlier this year when the L.A. LGBT Center released a video questioning why the AIDS Healthcare Foundation hadn’t backed it, challenging that organization’s continued opposition to PrEP. As an HIV prevention strategy, it has been shown to be up to 99% effective.

RIO 2016: A RECORD-BREAKING HAUL FOR U.S.
O
n Aug. 21, the Rio 2016 Olympics came to a close, and after 17 days of international competition, Team USA comfortably topped the medal charts after a recordbreaking run. American athletes took home a total of 121 medals, including 46 golds, dwarfing the competition. That’s the most medals the U.S. has ever won in a non-boycotted Games (topping 110 in Beijing 2008), and extends the U.S. winning streak to six Games, dating all the way back to 1996. Overall, 213 U.S. athletes won medals, making it to the podium in 20 out of the 27 sports that Team USA competed in. The score was bolstered by multiUNITED STATES medallists like Simone Biles, who won four golds and a bronze, and Michael Phelps, whose five golds and one silG 46 S 37 B 38 ver took him to a lifetime total of 28 Olympic medals—with 23 golds. Second and third place depend on CHINA how you measure it. China followed the U.S. in the overall medal chart with 70 in total, just ahead of Great Britain’s 67. While success stories like Phelps should have topped RUSSIA headlines, instead it was another swimmer who claimed the front pages, and for all the wrong reasons, as a G 19 S 18 B 19 faked robbery scandal involving Ryan Lochte and three other U.S. swimmers dominated the news cycle. GERMANY After Lochte initially claimed to have been robbed at gunpoint in Rio, it later emerged that there’d been no robbery at G 17 S 10 B 15 all, only a dispute over vandalism at a gas station. Brazilian officials temporarily JAPAN held three of the swimmers from leaving the country; charges were threatened, and apologies made all round, though G 12 S 8 B 21 the U.S. Olympic Committee has promised “further action” against Lochte and the others. From an LGBT perspective, Rio 2016 had its ups and downs. There were a record number of out LGBT athletes in the competition, but a few more were accidentally outed by a controversial Daily Beast article, penned by a straight writer trying out gay hookup app Grindr in the Olympic Village. There were also at least two gay marriage proposals involving athletes, and the United States sent both out Army Secretary Eric Fanning and former NBA star Jason Collins to attend the closing ceremony. Speaking of the closing ceremony, it featured perhaps the highlight of this year’s Games: the handover to Tokyo 2020, featuring Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe dressed as Super Mario—perhaps the nation’s most emblematic pop culture persona—emerging from a giant green pipe to celebrate the transition. —D.P.

Hookup Site Tells Center to Pay Up or F*ck Off When the L.A. LGBT Center approached hookup apps to help spread the word about our city’s current meningitis outbreak among gay men, most were happy to help. One company steadfastly refused. By Jim Key, Chief Marketing Officer, L.A. LGBT Center
E
ngaging naked guys in bathhouses wasn’t a job for the shy or prudish, but it was a job (several jobs, actually) that helped the Los Angeles LGBT Center combat the spread of HIV in the ’80s and ‘90s, particularly among those who were otherwise hard to reach: closeted men and those who didn’t live in gay ghettos or read gay publications. Bathhouse owners largely welcomed our outreach staff, recognizing that it was good for their business to protect the health of their customers. Today there are far fewer bathhouses than there were a decade ago, but apps like Grindr offer the same opportunity to protect the health of those who are otherwise difficult to reach. And just like hooking up can be more efficient through apps, so is public health outreach. In the event of a viral or bacterial outbreak that disproportionately impacts LGBT people—like Los Angeles’s current outbreak of potentially deadly meningitis—large numbers of guys, over a wide region, can now be reached instantly. Alarmingly, however, not all apps are willing to alert their users to new, potentially deadly threats. In fact, the CEO of two well-known apps refused the Center’s urgent request to warn his users about the meningitis outbreak. “Show me the money” was the message from one of the executives there. Nationally, there have been at least four outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease among gay/bisexual men. Los Angeles is now in the midst of its second outbreak. During the first one two years ago, at least three gay men in their 20s died. Once public health officials notified the
Center about the current outbreak, we hosted a news conference in partnership with county officials and other LGBT health organizations to educate people. We worked with mainstream and LGBT media to promote our free vaccinations, we spread word of the outbreak via all forms of social media, created and distributed educational posters and alerted everyone on our email list. But what better way to reach large numbers of men regarding a potentially deadly bacteria that’s spread by swapping spit than through the use of apps that can put them at risk? When we contacted Hornet, Scruff and Grindr, they all quickly agreed to alert their Los Angeles-area users. Each sent a dedicated message that was impossible to miss after opening the app. But Online-Buddies, the parent company of Manhunt and Jack’d, steadfastly refused. The company’s dual-titled senior health strategist and director of advertising sent an email reply to the Center that began promisingly. “As the former CDC syphilis elimination program manager,” he said, “I understand all too well outbreak response.” But in the next paragraph he referenced the advertising rate sheet that was attached to the email and concluded the message by writing, “Note we require full prepayment before launching any campaigns.” I figured he must have misunderstood. We didn’t yet have a campaign to advertise and I didn’t know whether L.A. County had an approved outreach budget. We just needed to quickly make those at risk of infection aware of the outbreak and encourage people to get vaccinated. That’s all we were asking. Bacterial
meningitis can kill within a few days of exposure, and one-third of those who survive are permanently disabled. We figured he’d be as interested in protecting the health of his users as we were, if for no other reason than to protect the company’s revenue stream. We were wrong. His second message left little doubt about his intentions: “Sorry if I wasn’t clear. We do not offer any free campaigns.” So then I thought—despite his background in public health and the ironic “senior health strategist” portion of his title—this guy just isn’t interested in work that won’t generate a commission. So I emailed the CEO, whose reply instructed me to “deal with” the company’s health strategist/advertising director “if and when you receive funding for your campaign.” At least there was no further ambiguity. But before you conclude that Online-Buddies isn’t interested in protecting the health of its customers, consider the fact that it maintains a “health” page on its blog, manhuntdaily.com. Though you won’t read anything about meningitis there, you will find recent posts criticizing a public service announcement to promote PrEP and the review of a product that’s supposed to make your penis stronger. Today it seems there are nearly as many ways to meet guys through your smartphone as there are guys who want to meet. I suggest you choose which app to use as carefully as you choose the men you meet, taking into consideration which of them is really into you. And if you’re a gay/bisexual man or person living with HIV, please get the meningitis vaccine.

CAN WE TRUST TRUMP’S FLIRTATIONS WITH LGBT PEOPLE? CEO of the L.A. LGBT Center Lorri L. Jean has grave fears about what a Trump presidency would mean for our community
L
ike a man embracing his bride while coyly winking over his shoulder at one of his wedding party guests, Donald Trump used the GOP convention to stir passion among the party base while lightly romancing LGBT people. The flirtation included Trump’s (awkward) reference to “LGBTQ people” in his acceptance speech—a first for a Republican presidential candidate. Earlier, a Trump supporter/ delegate said he was “proud to be gay” in a primetime speech. That’s also a first for a Republican National Convention. Could it be that The Donald has softened his own—and his party’s—notorious and discriminatory policy positions regarding LGBT people? It seems hard to believe. I still remember watching Pat Buchanan’s prime-time speech at the RNC, just six election cycles ago, when he bellowed, “There is a culture war going on in our country for the soul of America” while people in the audience thundered their approval and waved signs that read “Family Rights Forever, Gay Rights Never.” Now we have the Republican nominee going so far as to say in his acceptance speech that he would “protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology.” He even thanked those who applauded that line. And it was just a few months ago that Trump was thanked by Caitlyn Jenner for telling NBC’s Matt Lauer that people should be able to use whichever bathroom they feel most comfortable using. So whatever you may think of Trump’s other policy positions—and there certainly is a lot to chew on in that regard—is he a candidate we can count on to advance equal rights and protections for LGBT people? Hardly. In fact, I have grave fears about what a Trump presidency would mean specifically for our community—besides what it would mean for our environment, for women, for Latinos, for black lives, for immigrants, for foreign relations and so much more. Let’s start with Trump’s convention speech pledge to protect LGBTQ people from violent and oppressive foreign ideologies. Here in the United States, the threat specifically to LGBT people from foreign ideologies ranks low; somewhere near the threat to us from Chick-fil-a. Trump referenced the horrific murder of 49 people at Pulse (the gay nightclub in Orlando) before claiming to protect us, simply as a means to pit LGBT people against Muslims while

promoting support for his anti-constitutional ban on Muslim immigrants. Except the Orlando shooter wasn’t an immigrant. He was a New Yorker of Muslim faith who was found by the CIA to have no links to ISIS and who was described by his wife as “mentally unstable and mentally ill.” In other words, he’s someone who shouldn’t have had access to the arsenal of weapons he used to conduct the worst mass shooting in the history of our country. But Trump, who’s proudly endorsed by the National Rifle Association, doesn’t believe in any restrictions on the constitutional right to gun ownership. The greatest threat to our well-being isn’t from hateful foreign ideologies. It’s from hateful domestic ideologies like those in the platform of the party that nominated Trump; ideologies promoted by political, religious and community leaders that foster a culture that dehumanizes LGBT people and devalues our lives. A culture that causes parents to abandon their LGBT children, that convinces LGBT youth death is preferable to living and that leads to brutal hate crimes against us. A culture that last year resulted in the brutal murder of 22 transgender women. The head of the Log Cabin Republicans said this year’s GOP platform is “the most anti-LGBT platform” in the history of the party. (And that says something.) It’s a policy paper that supports the repeal of our freedom to marry, opposes the adoption of children by LGBT couples, demeans LGBT parents by implying our kids are more likely to abuse drugs and turn to crime, calls for banning transgender people from using the bathrooms that match their gender identity and affirms dangerous and discredited conversion “therapy” to change sexual orientation. This brings me to Trump’s choice for vice president, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, because Pence is the human embodiment of that anti-LGBT platform. Political pundits often say a presidential candidate’s choice of running mate is one of the most important decisions a candidate will make, and a reflection of the would-be president’s judgment. But since vice presidents typically have little influence over policy (Joe Biden and Dick Cheney are recent exceptions to this rule), should Pence’s background and experience matter that much? In this case, it may matter more than the selection of any other vice president.
Before the job was offered to Pence, Ohio Gov. John Kasich rejected an offer to not only be Trump’s running mate but also to become “the most powerful vice president” in the history of our country by managing foreign and domestic policy. (It’s unclear what that would leave for Trump.) Pence likely received the same offer. That should frighten LGBT people and all who believe in the promise of a free and equal nation. Pence’s long history of opposing equal rights for LGBT people includes signing Indiana’s so-called religious liberty bill last year to legalize wide-scale discrimination against LGBT people. It was one of the most draconian, anti-LGBT pieces of legislation in the history of our country, enabling just about any business owner to refuse service to LGBT people. Pence is also a forceful opponent of marriage equality and a strong advocate of conversion therapy, which is outlawed in several states, and he even proposed to fund it with taxpayer dollars. But if Trump is elected president, the greatest threat to LGBT people won’t come just from the executive branch of our government; it will come from the judicial. That’s because Trump has vowed to fill openings on the U.S. Supreme Court with people just like former Justice Antonin Scalia. Scalia, who was perhaps the most anti-LGBT justice ever to serve on the Court, opposed marriage equality and anti-discrimination law, supported sodomy laws and famously compared gay men and lesbians to murderers, child abusers, pedophiles and people who have sex with—and beat—animals. There’s one opening on the Supreme Court now, and during the next president’s term there are likely to be a few others. Imagine what the future of the LGBT movement will be like with three Scalias on the Court. Decades of progress could be reversed. But, hey, at least Trump supports the right of people to use the bathroom of their choice, as he said on the Today Show, right? No. Under a little pressure from Ted Cruz during the primary, the guy who promises to be the strongest president in the history of our country quickly flipped, saying that states should have the right to punish someone who uses a bathroom that doesn’t correspond with their birth gender. So this November, please don’t be fooled by a candidate who’s whispering sweet nothings in your ears and batting his eyelashes, because he’s also vowing to hurt you, or—if you’re an LGBT ally—hurt those you love and care about. And please vote.

WikiLeaks Accused of Outing Gay Men in Saudi Arabia
In a damning report on some of the organization’s more recent leaks, the Associated Press notes the site has published the medical records and financial information of private citizens in Saudi Arabia. Some identify people diagnosed with HIV and Hepatitis C; one divorce document reveals the male partner’s infertility; marital certificates reveal whether or not the bride was a virgin. Three documents ID’d domestic workers raped or tortured by employers, giving the women’s names and passport numbers. Two reveal the details of male teens who were raped, one so violently his legs were broken. Another outs a Saudi man arrested for ‘sexual deviation,’ a derogatory term for homosexuality. WikiLeaks has denied any wrongdoing. Scott Long, an LGBT rights activist who has worked in the Middle East, says these details should all be off limits, arguing that publishing them runs counter to WikiLeaks’ established aims. This publication reflects ongoing changes in the organization, which has long struggled with how to manage review and redaction of documents. “We have a harm minimization policy,” founder Julian Assange1 said in 2010, explaining that certain secrets were safe. “There are legitimate secrets. Your records with your doctor, that’s a legitimate secret.” Now it seems what was a legitimate secret in 2010 is fair game in 2016, and the vulnerable are paying the price. —D.P.
All Aboard the U.S.N.S. Harvey Milk
The gay rights pioneer and icon is to be accorded one of the Navy’s highest honors, as its newest ship will be named after him. The ship is expected to be completed in 2021. Harvey Milk 2 served in the Navy for four years before his political career, eventually leaving with an ‘other than honorable’ discharge, believed due to his sexuality. The Harvey Milk will be a supply vessel bringing spare parts and fuel to larger vessels in the fleet, one of six built in honor of civil rights leaders including Chief Justice Earl Warren, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and women’s rights activist Lucy Stone. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said it is “important to recognize and honor” Milk, who “was a person who stood for—and was killed for—justice, equality and freedom. His assassin tried to silence that voice, but even after death, his voice still spoke.” San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said the new ship would “tell people around the world” that Milk was a “great American who belongs in the great pantheon of civil rights leaders.” —D.P.
Target Devotes $20M to GenderNeutral Bathrooms
A vocal supporter of trans rights through the recent battle over bathroom rights, Target3 has put its money where its mouth is: $20 million, to be precise. That’s how much the company is investing in gender-neutral single-stall bathrooms in every U.S. store, allowing customers to “use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.” Target spokesperson Katie Boylan says 1,400 of 1,800 stores already have genderneutral facilities, with all but 25 due to have new bathrooms by end of year; stragglers will get them in early 2017. “At the end of the day, Target is all about inclusion,” she says. “We want everyone to feel comfortable in our stores.” —D.P.

A trans man has settled a discrimination lawsuit filed against a Long Beach barber shop that refused him service, allegedly telling him “we don’t cut women’s hair.” Hawleywood’s Barber Shop & Shaving Parlor has agreed to halt discriminatory practices and will pay Rose Trevis and his attorneys an undisclosed amount. The shop still denies the allegations, admitting no wrongdoing. “Who says I’m a woman?” Trevis replied on March 4, before another employee came over, “examined plaintiff from head to toe” and reiterated, “We don’t cut women’s hair” and “Women are not even allowed in the shop.”

Orlando Hospitals to Waive Pulse Bills
The two hospitals that treated patients in the wake of Orlando’s June 12 attack will not be billing them. Instead, they will collectively write off an estimated $5.5 million in care costs. “The Pulse shooting was a horrendous tragedy for the victims, their families and our entire community,” Orlando Health President and CEO David Strong says. “During this very trying time, many organizations, individuals and charities have reached out to Orlando Health to show their support. This is simply our way of paying that kindness forward.” Orlando Health’s main hospital, the Orlando Regional Medical Center, treated 44 people who needed immediate medical attention after the shooting, including nine who died in the hospital, and one who remains hospitalized. The company
said it will bill insurance companies for those who have coverage, but anything those policies don’t cover—and any treatment for those uninsured— will be picked up by the hospital. Florida Hospital, which treated a dozen victims, has gone one step further and won’t even bill insurance companies. It also won’t bill survivors for any needed follow-up surgeries. “It was incredible to see how our community came together in the wake of the senseless Pulse shooting,” says Daryl Tol, Florida Hospital’s president and CEO. “We hope this gesture can add to the heart and goodwill that defines Orlando.” —D.P.
California Boasts 16 of the 102 Worst Colleges for LGBT Youth
Campus Pride, an organization known for highlighting the best schools for LGBT students, has released its “Shame List,” with 102 colleges any LGBT student should avoid. How do you make the list? Simple: Openly discriminate against LGBT students, and apply for Title IX exemptions in order to continue receiving federal funds while you do so. The list is possible for the first time this year because the Department of Education now publishes letters related to Title IX exemptions online. “Most people are shocked when they learn that there are college campuses still today that openly discriminate against LGBTQ youth. It is an unspoken secret in higher education, how they use religion as a tool for cowardice and discrimination,” says Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director of Campus Pride. “This lists uncovers the religionbased bigotry that is harmful and perpetuated against LGBTQ youth on these campuses.” Some of the schools have requested Title IX exemptions; some have banned LGBT events on campus; others held mandatory attendance events with anti-gay speakers. A number have contributed money to help defeat pro-LGBT bills in their states. Among California’s 16 colleges to make the list are Azusa Pacific University,California Baptist University in Riverside5 , Irvine’s Concordia University, Fresno Pacific University and Trinity Law School in Santa Ana. —D.P.

s summer dwindles and gives way to fall, we have less than a month left of prime ice cream time. That’s because even in a city like Los Angeles, where early fall temps are only a few degrees shy of our June-to-September heat, scoops of frozen sweet cream simply taste better in the summer, don’t you think? The mission at hand is not to let Labor Day pass you by without indulging in frozen deliciousness. Stop in for a scoop after hiking the recently reopened Runyon Canyon. Keep your first, second or third date from coming to a close by treating your new guy to something sweet after an intimate dinner. Compensate all those calories lost during your sweaty yoga sesh with a waffle cone. Luckily for all of us, SoCal’s options for artisanal ice cream are nearly as plentiful as its potholes. Even better, most are adept at creating flavor combinations that can make your mouth water by name alone. Hawaii Pops Up THIS MONTH, THE ISLAND of Hawaii will cross the Pacific and set up shop in SoCal when Hawaiian Airlines presents the FLUX Hawaii General Store, a pop-up shop that will see 70 of the state’s artisans, crafters, designers and brands selling their wares to Angelenos who need a little island in their life. A Hawaii lifestyle magazine, FLUX is dedicated to reorienting how people think about the islands. Taking place Sept. 2-5 at BAM! Space on Abbott Kinney Boulevard, this year’s lineup will feature everything from fashion and accessories of the archipelago’s local labels to skincare products, pet supplies and food and drink. Workshops and live

The Truth About Open Relationships Gays have long pioneered non-monogamous relationships, but what should be examined before you consider opening things up? By Dr. Greg Cason
T
The longer you’re in a relationship, the less sex you’re going to have.“ At least that’s according to sex sociologist and author of The Monogamy Gap, Dr. Eric Anderson. The thing is, he’s right. Ask anyone who’s been in a relationship longer than five years and they can easily point to the decline. Does that mean the relationship is no longer working or the couple needs to “spice things up“? Maybe they should just secretly subscribe to porn sites and hire hookers. This has long been the heterosexual model, but is it the best option? Monogamy didn’t come into fashion until fairly late in human history, born out of the notion that wives and children were the property of the husband, according to Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá in their book Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality. Now it’s firmly a part of heterosexual culture (at least the appearance of monogamy is). Gay couples have long pioneered an alternative route: open relationships. Approximately 50% of gay male relationships are “open“—meaning there is sex outside the relationship with the partner’s knowledge and approval—according to a San Francisco State study published in 2010. But will this number remain the same now that gays can get hitched the way their parents did? According to the latest Gallop poll, 49% of all gay couples living together
are now legally married. But other research has shown those in same-sex marriages often start to copy the “traditional“ hetero mold, meaning when they say “I do,“ they think they have to say “I don’t“ to sex with others. Whether gay or straight, couples often see a declining sexual relationship as a negative. But is it? “Instead of recognizing [decreasing sex] as a product of a failed relationship,“ Anderson asserts, “We actually need to recognize [decreasing sex] as a product of an improving relationship.“ Could he be right? Could every long-term relationship in America just be improving? “Sexually open relationships have better marital happiness rates, longer marriages, greater satisfaction in marriages,“ according to Anderson, to which he adds, “That doesn’t come through spicing up the sex another way with the same partner for year after year. That type of sexual novelty comes with a new body.“ It seems gay couples know just that. According to a 2013 University of Michigan study, 42% of open gay couples are “early adopters“ and open things up in the first three months. But most gay couples move a bit slower, starting out with a period of monogamy, slowly opening up to having sex with others. Most gay couples take an average of five to seven years to make it official. SEPTEMBER 14, 2016

1. Start with a Strong Foundation Opening things up sexually does not signal a faltering union, but it is a sure-fire way to hasten its demise if the relationship is already in a weakened state. Don’t do it if there is any question about the solidity of your relationship. This is not a remedy; it’s an adventure. Make sure your relationship house is always something that draws both of you back home.
2. Ponder Your Personality Those who do best in open relationships tend to be more creative, nonconforming and individualistic people who are less concerned about the opinions of others and more concerned about their own values and ethics. But it can’t be all about you. You need to be able to communicate and work out relationship problems—something those in monogamous relationships often struggle with doing effectively.
3. Are You Jealous or Joyous? Consider how you handle knowing your partner is with another. Does it turn you on and excite you? Or are you threatened and scared? Those who are able to successfully manage multiple partners often have a character trait that those in the polyamory community call compersion. Compersion is really the opposite of jealousy and refers to a feeling of delight when your partner experiences the joy of intimacy with another. If either person feels jealousy or fear, then it’s important to manage it and not blame your partner. If you can’t, an open relationship is not for you.
that one person makes and assumes the other should follow are demands. Agreements lead to openness and trust and are likely to be followed. Demands lead to lying, hiding and rebellion. Make sure you work together and create only agreements regarding both sexual and emotional boundaries. In addition, figure out how much you are going to tell each other and how much you will share with others about your extra-curricular activities. Be frank and specific about everything.
5. Make Sure Your Agreements Cover All Bases WHO are you both allowed to “encounter?“ Other coupled guys? Three-ways only? Anonymous? No friends? WHAT acts are you cool with your partner doing? e all know that feeling—you wake up after having a sex dream about, say, an ex—or maybe some cute guy you caught a glimpse of walking down the street. Or, I don’t know, Chris Pratt, a setting sun and a raunchy moment at Point Dume. (Hey, don’t judge.) What do sex dreams mean, anyway? They can range from the uncomfortable (getting it on with your best friend’s beau) to the delightful (we’ve already covered our Starlord fantasy), and according to researchers, they’re one of the most common dream scenarios out there. In 2014, Boston University neurologist Patrick McNamara told Time magazine that about one-tenth of our dreams are sexrelated—but pointed out these figures are inherently unreliable, because they’re done in a research setting, and most people are a little skittish about regaling their weirdest dreams to scientists. Most likely, the number skews higher, depending largely on the person and their situation. Frequency aside, what can these fantasies (or nightmares) tell us about how we view ourselves and our sex lives? This is where interpreting sex dreams gets a little dicey—we don’t really know what they mean. In fact, it’s hard to interpret any dream, and most researchers agree they’re not very useful when it comes to deep insight. In fact, the question of why we dream at all is still fuzzy— McNamara believes it could be linked to emotional regulation, telling Time, “During dreaming, the limbic part of the brain—the emotional part—gets highly activated while the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, the executive part of the brain, is underactivated. So the kind of cognitions we experience during dreams are highly emotional, visually vivid, but often illogical,
disconnected and sometimes bizarre.” High levels of stress can also release cortisol, a hormone that influences the frequency of nightmares. There still might be a way to tease out some information about our erotic nighttime adventures. Psychologist Marianne Vicelich’s new book Love Spells posits a few suggestions of what sex dream scenarios mean—and most of it is pretty standard. She believes that dreams about exes indicate there’s something unresolved in the relationship, either emotionally or physically. Sex with a stranger indicates that you’re just plain horny. Sex with a celebrity indicates ... well, yes, you’re horny, but you’ve got some unexplored sexual desires, and you’ve wrapped that up in an individual you find very attractive. These are just conjecture, though. Scientists are more eager to study the hard facts of sex dreams, including when they happen and to whom. A 2007 paper published by the American Academy of Sleep Science and completed by Dr. Antonio Zadre of the University of Montreal found that men are less likely to report that past partners populated their sex dreams; 14% of their dreams were about a past fling, while the figure was 20% for women. Both report experiencing an orgasm in roughly the same numbers—in about 4% of sexual dreams. That doesn’t necessarily mean that, for men, it resulted in ejaculation; that’s nocturnal emission, which most men experience more frequently when they’re younger, and 27% of us never have. Above all, sex dreams are healthy. Don’t let them weird you out too much. Plus, sometimes Chris Pratt’s involved. What could be bad about that? —Patrick Rosenquist

September sees the Hammer Museum initiate In Real Life, its most ambitious program of film and performance yet
W
estwood’s Hammer Museum may be down, but don’t call it out. While the upstairs galleries at the free-of-charge art space are undergoing renovations, the museum has put together what might be its most ambitious bout of programming yet—In Real Life, a mix of performances and screenings set to take place throughout the complex for 100 days. As the museum explains it, In Real Life is organized into three “strands,“ the first of which is film and video. Organized by various curators, the film component includes “Artists’ Film International“ (Sept. 13 - Oct. 15), itself a collaboration with 16 international museums, and “How to Love a Watermelon Woman“ (Nov. 22-30), a film program celebrating the 20th anniversary of queer filmmaker Cheryl Dunye’s seminal 1996 work. The second strand of In Real Life includes weekend performances and immersive works. On any given weekend over the next 100 days, you’ll come across a New York-based Hawaiian dance group (Sept. 17), Jibz Cameron’s alter ego Dynasty Handbag (Oct. 2) and various comedic programs (Oct. 15-16). The third strand of In Real Life is comprised of courtyard rehearsals of works still in progress, from all disciplines—theater, dance, music and more. You’ll glimpse how various artists work when they use the stage to workshop or discuss new material. “We’re excited for the daytime activation of our courtyard, public spaces and theater during the fall renovation of our third-floor galleries,“ says Hammer Director Ann Philbin. “In Real Life gives the entire Hammer curatorial team a chance to explore their areas of interest within film and performance.“ —S.H.

aryland resident Jake Nodar is used to being “the only gay in the village“ when it comes to reality TV. A horse trainer and avid adventurer, The Discovery Channel asked him to compete on Out of the Wild: The Alaska Experiment back in 2008 as the show’s only gay contestant. He later worked on The History Channel’s Full-Metal Jousting, again the sole gay cast member. That led to his appearance on Naked and Afraid back in March, which brings us to the present: Nodar was the only openly gay competitor on season two of Naked and Afraid XL, a show that dropped 12 previous contestants—naked and without supplies—in the remote badlands of South Africa, where they were tasked with surviving for 40 days, enduring starvation, heat ... and each other. Meet Alex Vlahos and Evan Williams, the hot gay couple of Ovation series Versailles, coming to American TV this fall By Patrick Rosenquist
T
he most expensive Anglo-French drama ever made is coming to the U.S. this fall, when the historical soap Versailles lands on the cable channel Ovation starting Oct. 1. Set in 1667, the show focuses on the rule of King Louis XIV as he sets out to build the opulent palace, with all the court intrigue and trappings that come with ruling the nation. “It’s a rock and roll drama,” says Alexander Vlahos, who plays the king’s brother Phillippe. Loosely based on fact, his character sits near the center of power, and is, surprisingly, openly gay in a time when it was unheard of. “It’s because he’s basically above the law. It was illegal at the time, but the law was the word of the king,” he says. Evan Williams plays Phillippe’s lover, Chevalier, a lower-ranking member of the French court. Both Vlahos and Williams, who wrapped filming on the show’s second season this summer, are already familiar to American audiences. Vlahos starred as Mordred on the NBC fantasy show Merlin; Williams is a regular on the MTV show Awkward and will star in the upcoming horror film Escape Room. “What I like about this show is that it doesn’t treat these two as involved in some SEPTEMBER 14, 2016

In theaters Sept. 23 // Though the hazing rituals of American fraternities comprise the bulk of Andrew Neel’s tense feature film, it’s the masculine heart of brotherhood that makes it move. Written by the director with David Gordon Green, Mike Roberts and Brad Land (upon whose memoir the movie is based), Goat follows Brad (Ben Schnetzer of Pride), a kid assaulted by two drifters during the film’s opening, as he negotiates what it takes to join his older brother Brett’s (Nick Jonas) fraternity. In essence, Brad goes through one assault after another in an attempt to live up to his brother’s—and the frat brothers’—expectations of what makes a man, especially in light of his passive reaction to his initial assailants. Schnetzer gives a star-making performance, with great support from an unfussy Jonas and a slew of standout fraternity brothers and pledges, including an effective James Franco as the emotionally stunted douche who never really left the glory days of college. // Some bands reinvent themselves with every release. Others plough and perfect the same narrow field. Scottish alt-rockers Teenage Fanclub belong in the latter category. Their gently melodic vein of grunge, which came to prominence in the States with 1991’s Bandwagonesque and its breakthrough single “What You Do to Me,” hasn’t changed much in the decades that followed. And while there have been many years when new music was released with little more than ‘ho-hum’ for a reaction, this 10th album has occasioned raves overseas and should follow suit here as well. Yes, the songs remain the same, though the band is in fine fettle with a sharp batch of songs from Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley. Sometimes you can just enjoy the wheel without reinventing it. Standout tracks include “I’m in Love,” “It’s a Sign” and “Live in the Moment.” Available now // Now that the reality show known as Britney’s Breakdowns is over (or perhaps on hiatus), is it safe to talk about Ms. Spears without qualifications? She’s long past merely being a guilty pleasure for pop lovers, and while she’ll never garner the hosannas of an artist like her lip-locking BFF Madonna (she’s not nearly as plastic), she damn well demands your respect. Glory, her ninth record, guided by her usual phalange of co-writers and producers, is one of her best, and “Do You Wanna Come Over?” a standout. Obviously she thinks so, too, as she’s already given it the full choreographed treatment in her ongoing Vegas spectacular. And from the Basement Jaxx “Remedy”-like acoustic strum to the come-hither seduction of her single entendre lyrics, this is an invitation you’d be a fool to refuse. —Dan Loughry

sordid and bizarre affair. The show highlights the substance of their relationship. The camera doesn’t linger on it like it’s something freakish or unusual. It’s a high-stakes pairing, because that’s what it actually was,” says Williams. “It’s a period piece, but it’s done in a modern way. You get a sense that you’re watching the workings of Mount Olympus.” The series premiered in France on Canal+ last November, and it’s currently running through its first season on BBC 2 in the United Kingdom. The show, which reportedly had a budget of over $27 million, has also aired in Canada. “I think the U.S. is the only area that hasn’t seen the show,” says Williams. Aside from its record-breaking budget, the show was filmed primarily in the actual palace of Versailles, adding a degree of realism and opulence to the series. And he’s really close to the king.” Both actors point out that while the show is based on real events, it isn’t a plodding retelling of history. “It’s an exploration of the time—when France was the seat of power in Europe, and the court dealings were scandalous, dangerous and sometimes sexy,” says Williams. Vlahos adds, “It’s about two men living double lives, seeking control of the court, and balancing both.” Following its 10-episode run on Ovation, Versailles will head to Netflix. “It’s actually a very bingeable show,” says Vlahos. “It starts with a slow burn and then things escalate very quickly.”

hen we began, there were very few people who were out in music,” Pansy Division co-leader Jon Ginoli recently told Rolling Stone. “There weren’t really any in rock ’n’ roll. I think, even the ones that you think were out, they really weren’t out yet.” Ginoli, with his long-standing partner in crime, Chris Freeman, took a look around in 1991 and, well, they changed music’s homogeneous demographic and its trajectory. From Undressed (1993), with its resonant keynote song “Fem in a Black Leather Jacket,” to Deflowered’s (1994) homage to “Groovy Underwear” and the self-explanatory “Dick of Death” from Wish I’d Taken Pictures (1996), the band curated a cult following and quickly rose to the top of the “queercore” heap (though, let’s be honest, their music is more pop-centric than that label infers, not to mention, ahem, cheekier). Other artists would eventually follow: the power pop of PWR BTTM; Car Seat Headrest’s clarity from chaos; even the carnal puppy love of Troye Sivan. Yet it was a long and often lonely road. Not anymore. It’s fitting that Pansy Division celebrates the 25th anniversary of its forming with an inspired (and dare we say mature) new album, Quite Contrary, in an era when both the underground and the charts are bursting with the fruit of their seed. Whether these younger artists know it or not they’re indebted to Ginoli and Freeman (the way they, in turn, draw a line back to Pet Shop Boys by covering “It’s a Sin” in archetypal punk fashion). Respect. There’s nothing contrary about that at all. —Dan Loughry
Q: What are you looking forward to Drag Race fans seeing this season on All Stars? A: These are all girls we have come to know and love. It’s fun to see what they’re up to now, how they’ve changed, knowing what it’s like to be on TV and back in that work room. With All Stars, we designed the challenges to really let these bitches have it, you know? Q: What about your Emmy nomination? What were you feeling when you found out you were nominated? A: My whole life, my whole career, I have always worked off the grid, outside the status quo. So for the status quo to recognize the work I’ve done, I’m like, “Ummm, that’s great, but that’s really not the reason I do what I do.” If I was looking for validation or recognition from the industry, it would have broken me. So, I love that they have recognized it but I am more excited for the people I work with. For their work to be recognized. Q: Where are you in processing Orlando?
A: It’s interesting where mankind is today. I think we are on the precipice of a huge breakthrough. Our culture as Americans and as humans on this planet is going through a metamorphosis. So through this process a lot of violent acts—a lot of rejection of future—is being dealt with. I do believe the end result will be a beautiful butterfly, but until then, I think humans on this planet will have to endure a lot more violent transitions of this process. You know? It’s unfortunate. It’s horrible. Q: What do you think about the upcoming election? A: Right now our election is divided between people looking towards the future of the human race and people who don’t want to change. People who reject having to evolve. And that’s really what it is when you boil it down; that’s the great divide: People who want to keep the old way and people who are looking towards the future. —Alex Kacala

n 1989, when German photographer Peter Lindbergh shot five beautiful models for the cover of British Vogue, two things happened: His trademark monochrome photographs immediately redefined society’s beauty standards to privilege natural beauty in a time when retouching was pervasive among his contemporaries (“How crazy and unreal is the idea of erasing all your experiences from your face?” he once said); and, two, he gave birth to the era of the supermodel. Few fashion magazine covers hold such significance, just as few models other than Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Tatjana Patitz hold such a title. More than just the assemblage of five already established careers, Lindbergh’s cover inspired George Michael to cast those same five women in his David Fincher-directed music video for “Freedom! ‘90.” The rest, as they say, is history. Now, the man who Anna Wintour chose to shoot her very first cover of American Vogue and for years regarded as her “secret weapon”; the man who has shot everyone from rock icon Tina Turner to French film star Jeanne Moreau and the campaigns of every major designer, from Giorgio Armani to Karl Lagerfeld to Yohji Yamamoto; the man whose taste Herb Ritts trusted so much that Ritts didn’t have to investigate a new model had she already worked with the German photographer; the man who is considered a pioneer in photography, gets the Taschen treatment. Peter Lindbergh: A Different Vision on Fashion Photography, available this month from the premier coffee table book publisher, gathers 400-plus images that span his more-than-four-decade career as a game-changer in the realm of storytelling. Edited by fashion industry veteran Thierry-Maxime Loriot, the collection contextualizes his career with commentary by former collaborators including Jean Paul Gaultier, Grace Coddington, Nicole Kidman and even Wintour herself. What additional proof
does one need of Lindbergh’s esteemed status in the world of fashion photography? While he clearly had both respect and admiration for his subjects, the book’s most captivating revelation is the highly protective eye Lindbergh seemed to have over his female models. In an industry that sells youth, style and beauty to the highest bidder, Lindbergh was one of the good ones. “I was rather uninspired with the way women were photographed in the ‘80s,” he says, discussing his own inspiration. “I was trying to photograph them in a different way, but nobody seemed to care back then. ... I wanted to move away from the rather formal, quite perfectly styled woman who was very artificial. I was more concerned about a more outspoken, adventurous woman in control of her life and not too concerned about her social status or emancipated by masculine protection. My ideal was always the young women I met in art school, very independent and who could speak for themselves. The supermodels represented this change. It explains why they dominated the visual world for many years.” His raw work is legendary. Indeed, Lindbergh would force magazines running his photos to agree not to retouch anything. In May, he told Art Forum, “This should be the responsibility of photographers today: To free women, and finally everyone, from the terror of youth and perfection.” Taschen’s latest print release coincides with a major retrospective of Lindbergh’s black-and-white photography—more than 220 of the shots found in this new book—at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In addition to his print work, Lindbergh’s 1991 film Models, The Film will be screened. Curated by Loriot, the exhibition takes place Sept. 10 through February 2017. Stateside fans of Lindbergh’s work will also be interested to know he’ll be presenting the book at a signing in Taschen’s Beverly Hills store on Sept. 20.

fter having spent nearly two years on display in the desert between 2012 and 2014, Marilyn Monroe may return to Palm Springs in statue form, as the local community is currently on a mission to see “Forever Marilyn,” a 26-foot-tall statue of the silver screen star, return to the Coachella Valley permanently. PS Resorts, a local tourism nonprofit, says it has been negotiating an agreement with the RumChata Foundation (a charity formed by the same company that produces the liqueur) to cover half the cost of relocating the statue, with the remainder of funds hopefully raised through private contributions. Individual admirers of “Forever Marilyn” are able to contribute by going to donateforevermarilyn.com. For months, the goal has been to bring Marilyn to the Downtown Palm Springs park currently being developed, though that space will not be complete for another year or more. In the meantime, PS Resorts told City Council on Aug. 3 it has found a temporary spot, across from the Spa Resort Casino on the corner of Calle Encilla and Andreas Road. ‘PRINCE CHARMING’ WAS A RENTBOY, DOWN-AND-DIRTY OLYMPIC VIDS & WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO WITH RYAN LOCHTE? Poor, Poor, Pitiful Lochte It’s been an up-and-down couple of weeks for Ryan Lochte. I know this will shock you, but I feel sorry for him. Yes, he lied to his mom to cover up a wild night out, she blabbed to the press and then he had to stand by the story publicly. I’m not excusing him, but it’s not like he was Tonya Harding handing someone a crowbar! A far greater crime was that terrible hair at the Olympics. Someone ought to prosecute him for that. But, no, the Brazilian authorities have summoned him back to Rio de Janeiro to face charges of false report of robbery. Can’t he just send a check? Hasn’t he been through enough? In a smart move, Lochte has signed on to compete on the new season of Dancing with the Stars. Unless he dances like Geraldo Rivera, he should be safe for a few weeks and maybe garner a bit of public support. And he certainly needs a paycheck, since his four endorsement deals have fallen through. But there’s some good news: Lochte has been signed as spokesperson for my cough drops of choice, Pine Bros. (You know, those ones that are so sticky, they will pull the crowns out of your mouth.) The cough drop company said, “Just as Pine Bros. is forgiving to your throat, the company asks the public for a little forgiveness for an American swimming legend.” But I’ve come up with a better slogan: Coat your throat with Ryan Lochte and Pine Bros. Meet Prince Charming Robert Sepulveda will soon be the star of Logo’s new dating show, Finding Prince Charming, debuting Sept. 8, hosted by Lance Bass. Now, I’m not exactly sure who is the prince and who is doing the looking. Is Robert Prince Charming? Or is he looking for his Prince Charming? Perhaps he’ll open the show by singing “Some Day My Prince Will Come,” which could have all sorts of new implications for a gaggle of gay guys! As I previously told you, Sepulveda had a past, 56

but I had no idea how colorful it was. I knew that he had been cast on Bravo’s Most Eligible: New York back in 2011. I also knew he had some sort of relationship with designer Marc Jacobs. But now we’ve discovered that his past also includes a foray into the world’s oldest profession. Far be it from me to cast aspersions on a hooker. After all, he’s hot and was able to get paid for it, so good for him. This was back around 2006 in Fort Lauderdale, which fits the details of his life we already know. He was working under the name Vincent Romen and was advertising on the now-defunct Rentboy.com. We also know he was charging $250 per hour, $1,500 for an overnight. With those prices, he’s gonna break Logo’s budget! What do they get for that money? Well, he describes himself as having a “fat uncut 10-inch cock,” and from the rather graphic photos that have fallen into our hands, he’s much more than a handful. Not only does he have a big dick, but he might very well be a big dick, too. One reviewer (yes, hookers get reviews) claims Sepulveda refused to see him, saying, “I don’t like African-American men”! This does not bode well for the three black contestants! But you can skip the show and see every inch of him on my site. A Beautiful Soul I have known David Hernandez since his time on American Idol. We’ve performed at gay Pride festivals, we’ve hung out socially and we’ve talked about almost everything. And somehow, I never realized he wasn’t openly gay. Oops! Well, he’s out now. Last week, he released the single “Beautiful” and used it as a platform to open up about his private life. Not only is the song beautiful, but so is the video. Hernandez explained the message: “If you’re missing a leg, you’re still beautiful. If you’re overweight, you’re still beautiful. If you are 75 years old, you’re still beautiful. That’s why I wanted to share my own story as a gay man.” And, David, you are beautiful.
Vegas’ Newest Chippendale Another reality star with ties to our community is Nyle DiMarco, he of the fluid sexuality. The Dancing with the Stars champ will soon become a Chippendale. He’ll be hosting the all-male dance troupe’s show at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Sept. 22 through Oct. 16. “Chippendales is an iconic brand and legendary show,” he says. “Headlining a production like this with such a talented cast of performers is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!” Ask Billy: Raunchy Olympic Vids Our “Ask Billy” question comes from Gary in New York: “With all these hot Olympians and rumors of rampant sex in the village, how is it possible you haven’t gotten any nude photos or videos?
