The Colour Remix

The Colour Remix: This season, we have been bombarded with bold colours as we forgo minimalism once and for all. For the past few seasons it seems that in response to the economic depression, designers have been reaching more and more frequently for fabrics in black or, in the rare case white. In September, many found themselves surprised as color popped on runways from New York to Paris, signaling an undercurrent of change. Here we take a second to run through 6 collections that made use of color in their Spring 2011 collections.

Alexander Wang showed a collection for Spring 2011 that shocked the industry. The unofficial king of black showed a collection that was void of the color. Wang’s nomads were clad in white, a seafoam green, and a claylike brown color. The pieces still conveyed the sense of downtown chic and toughness that Wang is also known for, but does so with a purity, and a freshness that hadn’t been found in previous collections.

Alber Ebaz sent down the catwalk a collection of looks for Lanvin Spring 2011 that had more than a few fashion faithfuls stuttering. With colorful frocks that caught the wind beautifully, the glamourous designs presented a certain elegance and urban chicness that is aimed to make any woman feel beautiful and more importantly, like a woman.

Raf Simons took the drama of a couture ruffle, and the simplicity of the t-shirt and combined them to create the Jil Sander Spring 2011 collection. With pieces in a variety of colors(even pops of it showing up in the linings of coats, and on the soles of heels), the collection gives a bit of streamlined couture to the everyday wardrobe.

Prabal Gurung designed a collection for the real American woman for Spring 2011 collection. Color blocked to a T , the collection contained just the right amount of sophistication and class, conveying a femininity that is probably most evident in the full length evening gowns.

Miuccia Prada is known for starting trends that others follow and it seems like she was reading out of the same book that Marc Jacobs was for his Spring 2011 collection. While we didn’t find a Taxi Driver reference as much, although the ful brimmed hats were still present, there was an optimism, and what could even be perceived as a whimsical nature to the pieces. With pieces printed with monkeys and bananas, in a baroque style there was a chaquita bonita mood evoked from the collection. Story: Mikelle Street

Pattern Play

Pattern Play: This season, pattern is fearless and fun, with abstract prints and playful patterns becoming the center focus for many designers. Last season may have been dominated by an unabashed amount of minimalism, but for Spring/Summer 2011, colour was on the agenda, and with it, lashings of scrumptious patterns, perfect for evoking a bright, summery mood which is what many collections aimed to do. Prints were abstract and whimsical, using over-the-top colour combinations and high saturations for a tantalizing take on new season brightness.

At London Fashion Week, Peter Pilotto once again showed a print heavy collection. This season, the designer went for cool, almost icy shades of blue in geometric patterns carefully laid out on floor-length dresses with strategic slits placed around the neck and up the legs.

Diane Von Furstenberg’s collection was loaded with Aztec-inspired patterns which were created in colliding pastel shades and earthy tones, topped off with a hot pink lipstick and John Lennon style sunglasses, as well as an array of printed beach bags.

Marc Jacobs had a clear oriental inspiration for the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2011 collection, with kimono dresses and billowing silks printed with loud leafy prints in clashing colours, paired with Chinese fans and sophisticated clutch bags in hand.

Jean Paul Gaultier 80’s David Bowie hair caused a stir, while his printed pieces were lined with a bright orange and featured shooting stars as well as a variety of stripes. Vivienne Westwood’s tribal goddesses were on a different planet to Gaultier’s rock chicks, wearing loosely structured knee-length dresses with a mixture of nature-inspired prints adorned throughout.

These collections ushered back in all that is fun about fashion - minimalism may have been a change from the overly indulgent embellishment and decoration from seasons past, but nothing can beat being truly adventurous and exploring how print can turn an otherwise simple garment in to something other worldly.

New Season Accessories

New Season Accessories What makes our hit list this season? Our fingers may have turned a shade of blue with the winter cold, but it’s time to have our hearts warmed with the hottest tropical accessories to grace the catwalks this Spring/Summer,

With SS11 being filled with a paintbox of colour, it’s certainly not the season for the shrinking violet, with luscious fruity and honeysuckle hues set to be the flavor of the season.

Perhaps the most scrumptious of the collections is by Christian Dior, whose collection of tropical shoes, bags and jewellery means Galliano certainly rules the roost when it comes to beautiful colour-clashing. With a hot orange and Sex on the Beach palette, some of Dior’s boldest heeled sandals will leave you craving cocktails and a sandy beach. Emblazoned with fierytangerine feathers and bows, and decorated with orange leopard print, these sandals don’t need a spotlight to get noticed. Accessorizing the shoes - let’s face it, these shoes are the outfit, not the accessories - with tomato red luscious lips and topaz green eye shimmer adding a distinct vintage feel to an otherwise Caribbean collection.

And as if the orange leopard print heels weren’t enough to reawaken our love for paradise, Dior treated us to a collection of tropical-cum-tribal statement necklaces in a rainbow of fuchsia and hot pinks destined only for the hottest of wardrobes.

Challenging Dior to the boldest accessory award was Fenton, whose tasty Licorice Allsorts-styled necklace is sure to attract a sweet tooth or too. Inspired by interiors, Dana Lorenz contrasted bold pinks and sunshine yellows with black to really draw attention to the bullet necklaces. And, such accessories are always going to get you noticed for all the right reasons.

Furthering the trend of colour clashing, Prada produced wedged heels to be reckoned with, embracing an unusual colour combinationgreen and black wasp stripes placed next to a pink and white heel. More wedged sandals were seen in Pierre Hardy’s collection, where the vivacity is shown on the straps, and at Balenciaga who took a more 1960’s colour block angle on the trend.

If one colour is enough to keep you on your toes, then you may want to splash out on a bag from Burak Uyan in a road-line yellow, or get ahead of the trendsetters with a eclectic mix of bold clutch bags from Hermes.

Of course bright trends are not for the faint-hearted, but a splash of colour can liven up any outfit and look great with a summer tan. It also makes them hard to lose, so you can adorn yourself with new accessories at the beach without the worry of losing them in the sand. Perfect. Story: Isabella Stockwell

the evolution of the suit

The suit. His Armour. Her presence. The lone ensemble of apparel, that to this day remains ones most treasured choice of uniform. A striking cut, that classic colour palette, forever to be deemed, a gem in a stone collection. The evolution of the smoking suit derives from the early days of the seventeenth century; the name originating from the Latin tongue, evidently meaning ‘following’. It’s with the nature of the outfit that suggests the title’s relevance; the component garments, consisting of a waistcoat, jacket and trouser, follow one another in an equal colour and form. The suit has developed throughout the centuries; from the formality and precision prevalent throughout Victorian era tailoring to the 21st century’s relaxing of rules. Remembering the 1950’s mischievous Teddy Boy, Suggs’ 1980’s Rude Boy culture and Chanel’s androgynous revolution, it is clear to note that these three significant eras in fashion are marinated in the fundamental charm of the suit.

lowing women to express elegance and class in an understated manner; leaving their rigid corsets and extravagant hats in the closet! Leading on to a later pastime, 1982, the arrival of the musica act Madness furthered the suit’s popularity; the mod-influenced style consisted of a Fred Perry shirt, turn-up trouser, black blazer and Doc Marten shoe; therefore transforming Sinatra’s classic arrangement into a forever progressing statement. The suit captures a charismatically persisting nature within fashion’s storyline, so 2011’s Spring collections has delivered nothing less than the expected inclusion of the beloved outfit. Embarking on the reliable ensemble, delectable designs for the blossoming season have illustrated a fresh, contemporary character in the suit for her. Eminent la-

The suit captures a charismatically persisting nature within fashion’s storyline American prize icon, Frank Sinatra, was a man notorious for his irrefutable sense of panache; the iconic 50’s Teddy Boy. He embodied every ounce of what the fashion demanded; a crisp-cut trouser, white collar shirt, darling bow tie, sharp blazer and of course, that infamous pork pie hat. With an aura of power and honour oozing out of every tie and trouser partnership, the suit began to welcome an image of variety and edge. To reach a fresh angle on traditions and pave the way for a novel creation, the female suit was introduced. Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, the unconventional artist in cloth, shaped a fashion revolution. Women were finally offered the opportunity, the freedom to experiment; that sprinkle of androgyny in Chanel’s craftsmanship opened the eyes of the introverted woman. Her no frills policy came to compliment the alternative fashion body, al-

ing flares, to safari detail, to a structured short; 2011 furnishes a new age on historical traditions, focusing on colour, print and pant. Consequently, distinct from any other fickle trend; the suit, an outfit like no other; is the one slice of fashion that has never, and will never, loose its mojo. Story: Maisie Johnson

The story of Chanel n 5

o Behind one of the greatest fragrances of all time, and how it maintained its elegance. The timeless scent of power and femininity. There can only be one: Chanel No. 5. This legendary fragrance was the first perfume that Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel launched back in 1921 and is still the best selling fragrance by the powerful fashion house today. The name itself is legendary, used generation after generation. Every little girl splashes a few drops of her mother’s bottle on her neck and hopes to someday be the woman who wears such a confident scent.

In 1921, Chanel worked with perfumer Ernest Beaux to find a scent that was unique, reflecting something similar to her own eccentric personality. She made it clear that she did not want this perfume to be just any other floral scented eau de toilette on the market, but offer something more, something modern. The overall mixture is a mix of vanilla and sandalwood, Ylang-Ylang and May Rose bringing out a distinct scent that was capable of clearly making a name for itself.

Over the years we have seen some of Hollywood greats celebrate Chanel No. 5. In the fifties the pop art icon Andy Warhol created a series of silkscreens of the acclaimed perfume bottle while Marilyn Monroe made it clear she was a fan of the luxury perfume by stating the only thing she wore to bed was Chanel No. 5. Today it’s still one of the greatest selling fragrances, now being sold in refills and body lotions. It’s clear that nobody really knows what the modern woman wants more than Coco herself. The Rise of:

DAPHNE

This 16-year-old Dutch model is ruling the runway.

Dutch model Daphne Groeneveld may only be 16-years-old, but her startling wide eyes and constantly pouting lips have transfixed the fashion world. She was discovered while out shopping with her mother, and things quickly changed for the soon-to-be model. Adapting quickly to the fast-paced fashion world, she first made an appearance in Autumn/Winter 2010, when she was selected to appear in a campaign for Italian label Miu Miu, who are known for kick starting many new models careers. After this, she was again seen the following season - she walked for labels such as Jil Sander, Gucci and Calvin Klein. She has since appeared in Vogue Paris on numerous occasions, her first appearance in September 2010, the same month she also appeared in Interview magazine for the first time. This fashion week season (Autumn/ Winter 2011) saw the model take to the catwalk for a huge range of designers, notably, she was spotted at Givenchy, Chanel, ChloĂŠ, Fendi and Gucci, as well as many more. She was also selected to open and close many shows, an honor which is usually bestowed upon the rising stars of the season.

This marks just the start of Daphne’s career. She is currently still working on her education, but she will continue to shine as her modelling career continues to burgeon.

RISE: 5 FACES TO WATCH

Fashion is reshuffling its cards: with a new wave of fresh individuals lighting up the fashion world, the face of fashion is getting a revamp. These are the faces and names that will influence fashion in the near future - designers, models and rising magazine editors. FRV writer Isabella Stockwell discovers who and why.

Burak Uyan Every woman loves a man who understands two things; that they want comfort, but not at the price of elegance, so it’s no surprise that German shoe designer Burak Uyan is taking shoelovers hearts by storm. With a firm belief that five inch heels should be no less awkward to walk in than a pair of flats, Uyan has used his expertise from working with Givenchy and Giambattista Vall to form his debut solo line. And giving that he showcased the collection at the Capella Hotel in Singapore, the inspiration of Eva Hilds sculptures takes no surprise. Architectural is certainly a word that can easily describe the aesthetics of the shoes he makes, making shoes less of a shoe, and more of a sculpture. Block fabrics and stark colours are no strangers to Burak’s designs, and his use of differing textures certainly leaves us anticipating his next collection.

Emmanuelle Alt With a new sense of power, can come a new array of enemies, as the newly appointed Editor In Chief of Vogue Paris Emmanuelle Alt is sure to be finding out. Famed for her immense styling skills and ability to race her way through a fashion career at French Vogue, Emmanuelle took over Carine Roitfeld’s position in early February. Appointed due to her meticulous eye for fashion and ability to keep the ethos of Vogue Paris alive, Emmanuelle is to add a small dose of rock’n’roll to the publication, but at the same time keeping Vogue just how fashion lovers want it. Lagerfeld has publically announced his weariness of Alt’s ability to fulfill the role, stating that she may not have enough style for the magazine, and confiding that Anna Wintour certainly isn’t a fan. However, as she bagged the role as Fashion Director of Elle at the mere age of twenty, it’s almost a dead cert that she will bring a new sense of vigor to the magazine, and with her first cover in charge being of Gisele Bundchen, we are frankly, quite excited.

Cara Delevingne It’s almost written in the stars that the little sister of model-beauty Poppy Delevingne is going to be successful, so it came as no surprise to see her appointed as the new face of Burberry Prorsum. Replacing fresh-faced Emma Watson, Cara has wowed the fashion world with her stark looks and warm personality, and of course, her most fashionable accessory of all, her eyebrows. Having appeared in Italian Vogue before she had even hit eighteen, the 5”8 model has been listed as ‘one to watch’ by Vogue’s Sarah Doukas, has appeared in a music video for Bryan Ferry and is even dibbed to be creating her own record. Her debut Burberry campaign shot by photography genius Mario Testino, is sure to add to her ever-growing portfolio as she models alongside Jacob Young on a rocky shore, revealing dazzling accessories that can only match her beauty. In terms of ones to watch, we certainly won’t be taking our eyes off of Cara Delevingne any time soon.

Nasir Mazhar If hats make your outfit, then look no further than milliner Nasir Mazhar, a London based designer who continually wows with his sense of spec-hat-cular design. Recognised for his box peak caps, Mazhar has gained extensive experience from his extensive career. Whether it be from his starting point of hairdressing for top models, to designing for Kylie Minogue and the National Theatre, Mazhar has never failed to impress. In fact he impressed Lady Gaga so much, she has worn his orbital hat on two separate occasions, once for The Ellen Show and most recently in an editorial for V Magazine. His hats steal from nature, turning a simple piece of wood or feather into a remarkable piece of head-artwork. If you’re a fan of the races, this is definitely the man to invest in.

Oscar Olima Oscar Olima is most definitely for the lover of strong identities and outspoken fashion, so it’s no wonder he helped Nicola Formichetti design the costumes for Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball tour. And having attended, they are certainly memorable for all the right reasons. Inspired by Bjork and Grace Jones, Olima’s designs don’t go unnoticed. In fact, he has even designed for Beyonce, showing just how much of a hit he is with the strong, independent stars. Olima began his career working from home, creating masterpieces for the red carpet and fashion editorials. The style cuts to the core of edgy modernity, synchronizing a combination of unique fabrics with distinct architectural shape, to produce different and alluring outfits. Lady Gaga’s New Years Eve dress says it all; a metallic ice queen dress, fit for only the Queen of modern fashion, and designed by the man we can expect to be seeing a lot more from in 2011.

The Story Behind Fashion’s Quirkiest Label

W

hat is it about Miu Miu? Although created by Miuccia Prada in 1992, it was from the get-go far from being just another fashion label’s diffusion line. Quickly, Miu Miu spread across the world, opening boutiques in Hong Kong, Kuwait, Melbourne and Hawaii. Now, it is one of the pinnacles of Paris Fashion Week, often leaving other labels in the shadows as it steals the show with creations that seemingly shun convention and trends. Prada, as a label has often perhaps restricted Miuccia to being commercial. It has restrained her by almost forcing her to design pieces that people can envision themselves wearing - simple, feminine and original. Miu Miu on the other hand, is the label where she can dive deep into her thoughts - unleashing memories, fantasies and dreams to create whimsical, colourful and unique creations that often leave the fashion world gasping for breath - where do her ideas come from?

Miu Miu seemingly shuns trends, standing alone as a sort of off-beat sister to Prada. With celebrity ambassadors that include Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan and Vanessa Paradis, it is clear that Miu Miu play up the omnipresent in-yourface attitude that is not so apparent with the Prada line. It flirts with patterns, shapes and cultural references - adorning clothing with vintage style polka-dots, girly bows, acid-bright colours and even swallow & cat patterns.

Miu Miu perhaps allows Miuccia to set free her childish desires and playfulness to create a frisky blend of havoc, while Prada remains her place to create something for the sophisticated women she is still fascinated with designing for. After the unveiling of the Prada Autumn/Winter 2011 collection she said: “I’m curious about women, I want to challenge their passion.” And Perhaps Miu Miu challenges us in some other way. Calling us to be playful, to be childish and embrace all that is fantastical not just about clothing, but with everything around us.

Au Revoir Carine FRV says goodbye to the iconic editor

It was the Executive Fashion Director of American Vogue, Candy Pratts Price, that once said that September is the January in Fashion. Dubbed as the month which kickstarts the new year of fashion, September heralds the departure of the old and welcoming of the new. However it appears that in 2011 January has regained its pole position as the primary month of the Fashion World-fleetingly perhaps-as the winds of change have blown. For, it is after a decade at the Paris Vogue helm that Carine Roitfeld has stepped down as Editor-in-Chief.

When Roitfeld became Editor-in-Chief in 2001, Vogue Paris barely resembled its future self. Carine’s predecessor Joan Juliet Buck had neglected the fashion dimension which now constitutes the Glossy’s crux, instead favouring text and journalism. As a mogul of mode, Roifeld is attributed with pumping the publication with vital doses of fashion.

Although the existing status-quo posed a hindrance to the Directrice - “a lot of photographers didn’t want to work for the magazine” – ten years of Carine’s craft has culminated to an accomplished, complete chalice-she thinks “the best team is [at Paris Vogue] now” - which Roitfeld can proudly pass on to her Successor Emmanuelle Alt.

Au Revoir Carine

Carine was an Editor-in-Chief that didn’t push the boundaries, but banished them into the stratosphere. When accrediting her “amazing boss” Jonathan Newhouse, Chairman of Condé Nast International for facilitating her to “do such crazy things”, Roitfeld picks out the time she put “a black transsexual with a beard and high heels on the [November 2007] cover”. However, it is hinted that it was the curbing of her creative liberty that was responsible for her resignation, “In the last [period] I got less freedom that I got before, so I think it was just the right time for me to leave”. It is a return to the conventional which Roitfeld believes is just what the French President of Condé Nast France Xavier Romatet ordered. With Carine being adverse to the mundane- “I’ve always been provocative”a reversion to something “more easy for everyone” would undoubtedly constrain Carine’s raw, outlandish creativity which once controlled, thus diluted loses its original appeal.

Undeniably, Roitfeld’s vision rendered Paris Vogue a prophetic publication. Through Carine nurturing unknown talent; getting behind them and having belief in their ability, the fashion heavyweights of the future were born. Vogue Paris knew these people were stars before they knew it themselves. Lara Stone is one such muse who is of Vogue Paris fame. Riccardo Tisci said “Oh, you have to look at that girl, she’s amazing”. Carine “believed [Tisci] and [she] booked her, and after that I booked her for each issue. She was the cover of my special anniversary issue, the cover of the February issue. [She] gave her eight or nine covers, and now she’s one of the biggest stars”.

In an industry which is reliant on advertising to fund their magazines, Carine was a refreshing influence who although recognized that advertisers are becoming “more and more powerful”, she didn’t feel “forced to photograph something” for the sake of it. Roitfeld’s last offering, the March issue is devoid of advertisers, is “dedicated to young designers…just young designers”, ensuring a purity to the publication which is exempt from endorsed, controlled editorials.

“She put a black transsexual with a beard and high heels on the cover”. Jonathan Newhouse, CEO of Condé Nast International says “It is impossible to overstate Carine’s powerful contribution to Vogue and to the fields of fashion and magazine publishing. Under her direction, Vogue Paris received record levels of circulation and advertising and editorial success. Carine will be deeply missed. I am extremely grateful to her for what she has achieved.”

The future of the French fashion Institution that is Paris Vogue is yet unknown, but perhaps Emmanuelle Alt will steer the magazine in a less provocative, abstract way which was Carine’s signature.

The absence of Roitfeld will certainly be felt.

Coordinating or contrasting your nails with your outfit is a must this season - seen at Chanel, Gucci and Christian Dior, it was clear that perfectly manicured nails in statement colours completed each delectable look. At Chanel, we had a first look at their newest nail polish, Black Pearl. This was shown off by models who held neutral embellished mini-clutches. At Gucci, models wore bright red lips which coordinated perfectly with their pillarbox red nail polish. At Dior, individual colours were used on eyes, lips and nails for a striking effect which put a firm focus on colour. Get a catwalk-worthy manicure with the polishes we’ve selected.

Transforming Beauty

From candy-floss orange hair at John Galliano, to the eerie models at Junya Watanabe who wore a range of neon wigs while stockings covered their faces - Spring/Summer 2011 brought with it a mix of beauty looks, some more conventional than others. Makeup artists and hairstylists not only worked to achieve the designer’s vision, but also transformed the meaning of beauty by achieving something original and visually stunning.
