Originally From Stockton, Californa, 35mm Wizard Brandon Getty now resides in SF. What we love about his photography is that it Really translates that sense of A Skater’s California Summer: Hot, THirsty, Dusty, and spent primarily Under Bridges and At High Schools you couldn’t skate while school was in session. We Haven’t seen any of His SF Photos but Man Are We Stoked To.

Review of SFJAZZ’s “Skateboarding and Jazz” Photo By Shiv Siwajek Words By Ryan Abraham One morning whilst shirking my responsibilities at work, I found myself lurking on the Thrasher website. Under the events tab I spotted an ad for an event at the new SFJazz center; namely, a mini ramp session to the accompaniment of a Jazz quartet. Wishing to score girlfriend points while at the same time witness the likes of Adrian Williams, Ben Gore, and Dave Abair shred, I purchased two tickets without hesitation. I kept the event a surprise and when we finally found our seats within the creatively designed center, my girlfriend became even more confused at the sight of the mini ramp. The audience, constituted primarily by well dressed and jeweled middle-age couples, provided no hints as to what she was about to witness. Finally an introduction was given that related the likes of ‘half-piping’ to interpretive dance, the pianist, a really cool guy, gave a much more genuine talk about his motives for inviting the FTC crew down, and the music began. What ensued was incredible. The skaters one by one began pumping on the ramp. As the music’s tempo heightened and became more rhythmically complex, so did the skating. 5050s and Rock n’ Rolls gave way to blunt flips, bonelesses, and massive lien airs. Improvisation was a cornerstone of the night’s success. As drum solos would provide momentum, Justin “Iceman” Gastelum would react with full-speed lines ending with hefty bs flip tailslides. The improvisation went both ways; as Ben Gore glid front nosegrinds and Williams coolly slid switch 50s, pianist Jason Moran would accordingly cool things off with the sounds of his Fender Rhodes. A slight reprieve was given to the sweaty skaters as each had some water and gave a quick speech on what skateboarding meant to them, skating’s relation with Jazz, and San Francisco’s historic role as skate Mecca. Gore importantly related that what made him most stoked to participate in the event is that he got an opportunity to show a bunch of non-skaters what skating is, pointing out that “we’re not causing trouble, we need spots, and this is a good, constructive thing.” The night ended when Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker gave an amazing solo to compliment Abair’s knee-high nollie flip front D. Despite the horns being thrown up by 12 year old, mysteriously helmeted groms, the night was a definite success. I even won some happy-girlfriend points on top of it all.
