Dear Friends: It is hard to believe that “Creative Visions” is already in its seventh year! What started out as an effort to promote our students’ artistic talents has grown into one of Miami-Dade’s most celebrated student art exhibitions. Since 2004, we have seen student submissions increase tremendously. The 7th Annual Student Art Exhibition “Creative Visions 2010” demonstrates young people’s creativity in a variety of artistic mediums: painting, sculpture, photography, and even video as part of the “11-Tube” competition. Introduced three years ago as an addition to the exhibition, “11-Tube” asks district high schools students to write, act in, edit, and submit their own short videos. It seems to me that the talent we see at “Creative Visions” gets better and better every year, making it impossible to judge. All the students along with their teachers whose work is included in this exhibition should be immensely proud. I cannot say enough wonderful things about their excellent artwork. Thank you again to all our partners for their participation in “Creative Visions”: the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Department, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, and my dedicated staff. Congratulations to our young artists! Perhaps we will see your work in other prominent galleries around the world or printed in popular literature. Who knows what the future holds?

Sincerely,

Commissioner Joe A. Martinez Miami-Dade County District 11

Dear Friends: This seventh edition of “Creative Visions” is the result of County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez and his hard-working staff bringing together Miami-Dade County, the Miami-Dade County Public School System and the State of Florida through Florida International University, in a truly unique partnership that engages students in creative pursuits. Involving students in cultural activities is critical for their development. Independent studies show that kids that enjoy the benefit of arts education are far more likely to stay in school and score much higher on standardized tests. The arts are one of the keys to success in life. Some artists work a lifetime for an exhibition in a museum. Each of the talented young students participating in Creative Visions 2010 has accomplished this already at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum. Congratulations to all the students, their families and the teachers who make it all happen. We applaud the talented young artists in District 11! We applaud the talented young artists in District 11! Sincerely,

Michael Spring

Dear Friends: The 7th annual Creative Visions Exhibition once again celebrates the collaboration between Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Division of Social Sciences and Life Skills, Art Education Program; government partners; and community based organizations. These formidable relationships within our community support the visual arts programs for students in grades K-12 and recognize this exhibition as a vital component of the core curriculum. This exhibition encompasses an assortment of two and three-dimensional works of art in a variety of media from lessons that have been developed by our dedicated art educators. Students then take these ideas presented and exercise their talents beyond their reach to create successful works of art. We congratulate the art educators for their commitment to the visual arts and to the students for exploring creativity with such passion. We invite you to indulge in the fabulous array of talents of our students! Sincerely,

Mabel Morales District Supervisor, Art Miami-Dade County Public Schools Division of Social Sciences and Life Skills Art Education Program L014 MM/aa

First and foremost, I greatly appreciate the honor of having my artwork “Shades” be displayed on the front of this catalog. I have been taking art for many years; from drawing and painting to photography and have never received such an honor. The art piece I submitted to this show, a portrait newspaper collage is one of my favorites. It gave me an opportunity to use a different medium than I am used to working with. What inspired me to do such a piece was the challenge of creating the values and details of the portrait using different shades of newspaper. This was difficult to achieve, but with the assistance of my art teacher, Mrs. Cipriani, and dedication to the work, the art piece was a success. Marlin Acosta

Floating Cubes Exhibition

“Earth and Water, our planet, our life” has been designed to emphasize our individual and community responsibility for consciously doing our part in protecting our sensitive environment and to create awareness of the need to protect our planet. We seek participation from artists, writers, poets, photographers, and other individuals who would be willing to artistically express their concerns and ideas for a better future. This project has been conceptualized to involve participants of all ages, from elementary school youngsters with their rich imaginations, to senior citizens with their wisdom and Andrea Pérez life long experiences. The exhibition Hammocks Middle School Floating cubes at the Creative Visions 2010 Student Art Exhibition displays the artwork of students of the Miami Dade Public schools in District 11, Hammocks Middle School and G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School. Each cube will send a message related to the conservation of our planet. Mireya Perez Power President, PIAG Museum, Inc
