Be a part of the 2019.2020 Season As we enter our 63rd presenting season, I am reminded of the important role that CES and Frostburg State University play in promoting the artistic and economic vitality of the tri-state region. The National Endowment for the Arts recently reported that the arts generated some $67.5 billion in states where 30 percent or more of the population lives in rural areas. CES, through its patrons, donors and sponsors, is proud to contribute by presenting a sustainable and vibrant arts program in Western Maryland. CES is committed to promoting the arts in our region by providing exceptional live performance, enriching educational outreach and meaningful interactions with magnificent artists from all over the world. All of these guest artists bring with them their own unique set of experiences, perspectives and talents to engage our patrons. This year’s season features 17 live performances representing genres of comedy; jazz, classical, folk and Americana music; circus arts; and ballet. We welcome back the Maryland Symphony Orchestra celebrating The American Symphony, and the Russian National Ballet, performing Don Quixote, while introducing the elite circus artists and acrobats of Cirque Mei and country music superstar Jo Dee Messina. Your support and involvement have allowed our organization to become a fundamental part of the fabric of our community. Your patronage ensures that we continue to present celebrated artists of the world and that we expand the number of young people who are transformed by our arts programs. Your support also guarantees that future generations will have CES as an essential part of their lives for years to come. Think of the pages before you as a road map to laughter, excitement and breathtaking moments that you will never forget. Thank you for your continued goodwill, attendance, curiosity and philanthropic support of the arts. Welcome to our 2019-20 presenting season!

CES Main Stage Series

The American Symphony The Maryland Symphony Orchestra returns with a stirring performance that celebrates the American spirit. The program includes a new fanfare composed by eminent African-American composer James Kimo Williams to commemorate Elizabeth Schulze’s 20 years as MSO musical director; Antonín Leopold Dvořák’s powerful Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” which evokes the rhythms and melodies of Native American and African-American songs and dances; and First Symphony in E Minor from Florence Beatrice Price, the first African-American woman to have been recognized as a symphonic composer and the first to compose for a major American orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

James Kimo Williams

Antonín Leopold Dvořák

James Kimo Williams’ compositions have been performed by symphonies across the country. He has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Vietnam Veterans of America’s Excellence in the Arts Award. Along with actor Gary Sinise, he is co-founder of the Lt. Dan Band, which was created to present USO shows for activeduty service members. Williams resides in Shepherdstown, W. Va.

Legendary Bohemian composer Antonín Leopold Dvořák achieved worldwide recognition with a style described as “the fullest recreation of a national idiom with that of the symphonic tradition, absorbing folk influences and finding effective ways of using them.” In 1892, while serving as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, Dvořák proclaimed that African-American and Native American music should be used as a foundation for the growth of American music; through the music of these cultures, he believed Americans would establish their own national style.

Florence Beatrice Price Born in Little Rock, Ark., in 1887, Florence Beatrice Price studied at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music. Although her training was steeped in European tradition, her work reflects the American idiom and her Southern roots, and she frequently used blues and African-American spirituals as inspiration for her arrangements. Price’s compositions almost vanished from history until 2009, when a trove of her lost manuscripts was discovered in an abandoned house on the outskirts of Chicago.

Derek Brown Featuring the FSU Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Faculty

Crossing genres from jazz to classical to funk, saxophone innovator Derek Brown’s playing style must be seen to be believed. As described by jazz journalist and historian Scott Yanow, “Brown performs unaccompanied solos that occasionally make one recall Bobby McFerrin in his early prime and the great saxophonist Eddie Harris ... utilizing slap-tonguing, circular breathing, a wide interest in musical styles and dazzling coordination to create rather unique music.” Joining Brown onstage are talented performers from the FSU Jazz Orchestra and faculty members from the FSU Department of Music.
