Fraternities and sororities give back to campus
DEPARTMENT OF STUDENT AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND FRATERNITY AND SORORITY LIFE
Founding principles of Fraternity and Sorority Life Scholarship Academic excellence is a tradition and priority for fraternities and sororities. Through a series of programs and workshops and the creation of scholarship chair positions within our governing bodies, we assist members to excel as students, and are providing workshops, training and seminars on topics such as time management and study skills. Leadership Fraternity and sorority life offers its members endless leadership opportunities and the chance to serve as officers within their individual chapters and as executive members of the governing bodies. Together with Student Activities, we sponsor and participate in a variety of leadership programs, workshops and social events. Service Each year, fraternity and sorority members contribute hours and money to local and national charities. We take part in a wide variety of philanthropic events and encourage the campus and local communities to participate. 4
Fraternities and sororities help first-year students move into residence halls.
To be eligible to join a fraternity or sorority, students must meet the following requirements: STEP 1 Be a current student at FSU and have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours as a full-time student at FSU or another accredited college or university during the previous semester. First semester students may not join a fraternity or sorority.

STEP 2 Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. In addition, some organizations have additional academic requirements. Please check with the organization of interest. STEP 3 Be a ready for a lifetime of leadership, service, connections and fun in and outside of Frostburg State University.

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing body composed of campus chapters of national/ international fraternities that are also members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). The ideals of the IFC are to foster and promote the interests of the member organizations and the University, to discuss concerns of mutual interest and to develop cooperation among the member organizations.
National Panhellenic Conference is the governing body composed of campus chapters of women’s fraternities whose national/ international bodies are members of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). Each of the members is autonomous as a social, Greek-letter society of college women. The ideals of NPC are to foster interfraternity relationships, to assist member chapters and to cooperate with the University in maintaining the highest scholastic and social standards.
National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the governing body for all historically AfricanAmerican national fraternities/ sororities, whose national/ international bodies are members of the NPHC. The purposes of the Pan-Hellenic Council are to promote the uniqueness of each member organization, and to foster cooperation among the member groups.

Beat boredom by joining an organization The Office of Student Activities and Fraternity and Sorority Life is a component of the Department of Student Community and Involvement serving the University community. The Student Activities program at FSU creates a co-curricular environment that also complements the academic program through the development of leadership skills and the exposure to and participation in social, cultural, recreational and governance programs.
The mission of Fraternity and Sorority Life is to foster an environment that promotes healthy and safe undergraduate experiences through diversity and student growth. The University Programming Council is a programming organization whose mission is to sponsor, collaborate and implement social, educational, recreational, and multicultural programs and activities for Frostburg State University. Under the direction of the Office of Student Activities and Greek Life, the UPC leadership team works with a committee of general board members to develop and implement events that are representative of the diverse interests of the students and other members of the Frostburg State University community. The student leaders and members of the general board focus on programming areas including, but not limited to, speakers, music, multicultural events, comedy, feature films and off-campus trips. In addition, UPC staff and members are responsible for the planning and coordination of campus-wide traditions, including Spring Fest and Late@Lane.

Transforming the community through world-class artistry CES at Frostburg State University provides an annual series of high-caliber programs with performing artists from all over the world. FSU students and surrounding community members need not travel to distant cities to attend outstanding arts events. Programs often include artists who perform regularly at such renowned venues as The
Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Past guests include world-class artists like Esperanza Spalding, Red Baraat, The Roots, The Hot Sardines, the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Broadway stars like Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal and Craig Schulman. Each season offers a wide array of performances in music, dance and theatre genres from
such international performers as Moscow Festival Ballet, Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company, Vienna Choir Boys and Indian Ink Theatre Company. Educational outreach Attendance at superior arts events is not the only opportunity CES offers to students. The CES Educational Outreach program presents a thorough series of hands-on workshops, lectures, master classes and other experiential events. These outreach programs invite students to become active and educated participants in the arts.
4 Ways to PURCHASE TICKETS Season events are on sale beginning in late August each year. Student tickets are free or discounted for all CES performances with FSU student ID. Advance ticket purchases may be made. Payment may be made by all major credit cards, authorized bank card, money order, personal check, and cash. Based on availability, tickets may also be purchased one hour prior to curtain time at the venue box office. All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket. All ticket sales are final — no refunds, no exchanges. Tickets for FSU students, faculty and staff are available at a discounted price with a valid FSU ID.

The Lane University Center (LUC) is the hub of campus life at Frostburg State University. It is the mission of the Lane University Center to provide quality customer service and state-of-the-art event and meeting spaces to the students, staff and faculty of Frostburg State University as well as the local community. The Lane University Center is dedicated to providing exemplary service and support to all of our clients creating an experiential learning environment for our students. Some of the building highlights include meeting and lounge spaces, a 17-seat computer lab, a fitness center focusing on cardio equipment, fraternity, sorority and general student organization storage lockers, and a game room featuring the latest gaming consoles as well as retro gaming systems. Appalachian Station along with Starbucks Coffee and Moe’s Southwest Grill are the Frostburg Dining by Chartwells food options within the Lane University Center. The University Store is also housed in the Lane University Center. Students can dine in the South Addition , which features scenic views of the athletic fields and the Western Maryland mountains. They can also hang out in the comfortable and student-friendly lounge area, featuring several televisions — including an 82" flat screen.
Students purchase tickets for student activities at the Lane University Center Box Office. The Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall (ARMAH) is the heart of the building. Many of the events for our students and the community take place in this room. The ARMAH features a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system to help support the activities and events in the building, including the performance needs of our oncampus clients and national touring companies/acts, as well as the event needs of community groups.

EVENT SERVICES Rooms on campus are reserved at no cost to official University groups and registered student organizations through the online reservation system at www.frostburg.edu/admin/roomres. Student organizations may meet in most campus facilities. Organizations are encouraged to schedule an event well in advance so that an appropriate space may be reserved. The Lane University Center Reservations Office will advise organizations which rooms are available for use, help make arrangements for room setups and most audiovisual equipment. While there is no charge for routine room setups and basic audiovisual equipment, special requests are subject to a nominal charge.

The A STAR! in Western Maryland AmeriCorps program has served the four westernmost counties in Maryland since 1994, providing direct services focusing on Education and Healthy Futures. AmeriCorps members commit to one year of National Service impacting the communities served. A STAR!’s mission is to foster a network of local non profits, collaborate to provide identified direct service within the region to address education and health, – serving Garrett, Allegany, Washington and Frederick counties. A STAR! in Western Maryland placed over 100 AmeriCorps members in direct service opportunities in the four westernmost counties in Maryland. • Over 11,525 books and emergency supplies were distributed to community partners as part of the Read to Succeed Program. • 9,325 pounds was recycled. • 1,459 lunches were provided during the summer lunch box program in Frostburg. • AmeriCorps members contributed over 45,000 hours of direct service. • 661 K-12 students received academic engagement programming supported by AmeriCorps members..

The ECHOSTARS/ RisingSTARS AmeriCorps Program is a living-learningserving experience for students committed to making a change in their communities. ECHOSTARS are a part of a growing student service movement. Members participate in learning communities, academic enrichment programs, community outreach, environmental stewardship and other identified community initiatives. Members who successfully complete 300 hours of service will receive an Segal Education Award with the potential to earn an additional $500 credit if hours are completed during academic year. A Serving Community
The ECHOSTARS attend many of the same classes together, such as Psychology and Freshmen Orientation, as part of their learning community. Even if students follow another learning community path because of their major, they can still participate in the ECHOSTARS program. Many ECHOSTARS major in education and social work, and their service offers them the necessary experience to excel in their field of study.
ECHOSTARS/RisingSTARS students are committed to making a change in their community in a variety of ways. Each week, they assist with after-school programs at local elementary schools as well as the YMCA and the Salvation Army. As part of the service program, the ECHOSTARS/RisingSTARS receive transportation to all of the service sites and special projects. In addition, they assist with academic enrichment through the Read to Succeed program offered at Frostburg State University to local children by providing academic and social mentoring to help these school children succeed and in their personal lives. As part of a growing student service movement, the ECHOSTARS/RisingSTARS serve more than 15,000 hours each year, providing a valuable resource to the local community.
A Living Community Each year freshmen and RisingSTARS serve as ECHOSTARS. This living community resides exclusively in Gray and Diehl Hall, modern and well-appointed housing options. Together, the ECHOSTARS socialize and encourage one another in their college experience.
Partnering to conquer
ADDICTION Dr. Stephanie Hutter-Thomas partners with programs across the state and nation to help fight the opioid crisis.
Conquering Opioid Abuse Together (C.O.A.T) In 2016, Drug and alcohol-related deaths claimed nearly 2,100 lives in Maryland which is the largest total in state history. State health officials attributed 89% of those deaths to opioid-related causes leading Governor Larry Hogan to declare a state-ofemergency in March 2017. On August 4, 2017, the Maryland Department of Health released data for fatal overdoses in the first quarter of 2017. During this period, which encompasses January to March of 2017, there were 550 overdose-related deaths in the state, including 372 fentanyl-related deaths indicating the problem showed no signs of retreat. In August 2017, Frostburg State University was awarded an AmeriCorps targeted priority grant by the Corporation for National and Community Service to launch Western Maryland’s Conquering Opiate Abuse Together (C.O.A.T.) program in partial response to this growing epidemic.
The C.O.A.T. program currently funds nine new AmeriCorps positions, eight part-time and one fulltime, who are placed at various sites in Maryland’s westernmost counties, Allegany, Frederick, Garrett and Washington. AmeriCorps members serving under the COAT program will work within their assigned communities to assist in providing resources and programming to individuals currently battling opiate addiction while also offering education and support to community members affected by this crisis. Resource distribution includes open community outreach programs, guest speakers, individual-level interactions, group-level interactions, information hotlines, clearinghouses, as well as presentations in schools and online outlets. C.O.A.T. AmeriCorps members may be students or individuals with no previous connection to FSU or AmeriCorps.

Sponsor-A-Family Thanksgiving Baskets
Oxfam Hunger Banquet Ten days before Thanksgiving, students will host a Hunger Banquet. Attendees’“fate” is drawn at the door — high-income, middle-income or low-income. The meals served will reflect your income level. Be part of this nationwide, campus activity to discuss the issue of hunger in our world. Through the annual Sponsor-A-Family, academic and administrative departments, student groups or individuals can help make a difference in a family’s life in Western Maryland by providing a Thanksgiving food basket to a family in need. Since its beginning, the Sponsor-A-Family has provided Thanksgiving baskets for over 250 families in Western Maryland. If you or your group is interested in sponsoring a family for the Thanksgiving holiday or just making a donation, drop off your non-perishable food items at the Office of Civic Engagement. All baskets will be delivered on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Western Maryland Making Strides is a 5K walk held in Cumberland, Md, during October. This event is an opportunity to unite community members, build awareness and raise funds to fight cancer.
Special Olympics Maryland Winter Games Be part of this nationally recognized winter sporting event for people with disabilities held in Western Maryland. Service opportunities include helping athletes, the Parade of Athletes and being timers and scorekeepers.
Deep Creek Dunk & Hooley Plunge
Toys for Happiness Drive Toys for Happiness collects unwrapped children’s toys to give to less fortunate children in the area. Each year, toys are accepted at the Braddock House, the Lane University Center and the Compton Science Center for approximately two weeks, then displayed at the President’s Holiday Reception for everyone to see prior to the delivery of the toys. Take a plunge into the icy waters of Deep Creek Lake in February and Lake Habeeb at Rocky Gap in March to support Special Olympics and other programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. Information is available at the Office of Civic Engagement.
Alternative Break Trips FSU Alternative Break is committed to organizing off-campus service trips for students. Last year, students participated in trips to Houston, TX and New York, NY. Relay For Life The annual Relay For Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, raises money to fund cancer research, cancer awareness and survivor support programs. Teams of participants raise money and walk around the track at FSU from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. to show their support for those who are fighting the disease 24 hours a day. Beautify the ‘Burg is an annual event that brings students, faculty, staff and community members together to clean up Frostburg. Volunteers can register individually or as a group to complete such tasks as planting trees, painting and removing trash. Town Hall Series The office of Civic Engagement has partnered with the J. Glenn Beall Jr. Institute for Public Affairs, the Political Science Department, and the Student government Association to host a series of town hall meetings each semester that bring students together for meaningful conversations about their local, state, and national governments. These conversations range in topics from how the economy affects our students and higher education, to issues regarding foreign policy. These programs are focused on educating students on the democratic process and how they can get involved to make a difference.

• In 2017-18, CES presented 38 total events and 12 public performances that reached audiences from throughout the tri-state community. • Among the performers were international artists from Russia, Ireland, China, Cuba, Trinidad & Tobago, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland and Argentina. • Attendance at 21 educational outreach events was over 3,000; attendees included local community members, school children and FSU students. • An eight-member Student Production Team worked throughout the season in the presentation of CES programs. These students also supported Late@ Lane programs by providing artist and staff hospitality needs.
Civic Engagement • The Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism has recognized and funded the ASTAR! Program as a Program of Excellence throughout Maryland, 2007-2015. • Frostburg State University has been selected to participate in a national initiative on civic learning and democratic engagement, one of 73 colleges and universities nationwide designated as a Lead Institution by NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the leading voice for the student affairs profession. • ASTAR! in Western Maryland AmeriCorps Program received three-year funding totalling $2.5 million.
Lisa Toni Clark, director of A STAR! in Western Maryland AmeriCorps program won FSU’s Staff Award for Excellence.
• Frostburg State University was again named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2014. • The Office of Civic Engagement completed its largest Alternative Break Program, sending 40 students, staff and AmeriCorps members to New Jersey over Spring Break. • Last year student organizations, FSU athletic teams, FSU departments and community members donated over 85 Thanksgiving baskets to the Office of Civic Engagement to be distributed to those in need throughout the county.

Bill Mandicott won the 2018 FSU Distinguished Staff Award for his incomparable work ethic and deep commitment to connect the campus with the community.

Lane University Center • Provided paid experiential learning opportunities to 50 students during the academic year. The Lane University Center student staff logged over 19,890 hours supporting our campus community and student life • The Lane University Center hosts an average of 5,700 events each year. • Over 16,000 patrons visited the Lane University Center each week during the 2017-18 academic year. Over 60,000 guests utilize the game room during the year.
• Graphic designer Donovan Carter won the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program Mission Design Competition which will fly on the International Space Station in June.
• Late@Lane entertained 25 percent of the campus community one weekend per month during the fall and spring semesters. • Late at Lane’s concert series Lyrics at Lane brought Jesse McCartney to campus last December with 500 students and community members in attendance.

Donovan Carter ‘18 won the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program Mission Design Competition with his Marylandinspired patch. The patch represents the University System of Maryland in SSEP Mission 12 and will be on its way to space in June 2018.

• University Programming Council hosts a monthly movie series, UPCinemas, that screens blockbuster hits like Black Panther and Jumanji before they hit Redbox or DVD • Every year, the University Programming Council hosts approximately 80 programs for FSU students and the University Community; Greek Life hosts over 120 social and educational programs. • 376 total Fraternity and Sorority members in over 20 chapters served an average of 8 hours of community service per member. Areas gaining our assistance are: Allegany County Animal Shelter, City of Frostburg, Beall Elementary After School Program; Cumberland Zoo, Salvation Army, Eastern Garrett Fire Dept, and Frostburg Nursing Home. National programs: American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, Special Olympics, St. Jude’s, and America Red Cross. They have donated over $7000 to the American Cancer Society and over $4000 to other local and national causes.
