TIME FOR THREE (TF3)— MASTERFUL MUSICAL MIX
PULSE CHAMBER MUSIC— A PASSPORT JOURNEY
ZACH DE PUE, violin NICK KENDALL, violin RANAAN MEYER, double bass
MARGARET DONAGHUE FLAVIN, clarinet SCOTT FLAVIN, violin, viola MARINA RADIUSHINA, piano
Time for Three (Tf3) is a masterful trio that defies traditional classification. NBC describes their latest recording project as “glowing…very hot…marked by great intensity of feeling…impassioned.” Featuring Zach De Pue and Nick Kendall, both on violin, and Ranaan Meyer on bass, Tf3 performs music from Bach and Brahms, to their own arrangements of The Beatles, Katy Perry, Kanye West, and Justin Timberlake. They appear everywhere, from Carnegie Hall to Jazz Clubs, European festivals, NFL games, and the Indy 500. And now they mix it up at Festival Miami in a musical fusion co-hosted by Universal Music U @ Frost. It’s time to experience a new kind of concert—it’s Time for Three!
Hailed for their virtuosity and creativity, Pulse is a fresh and inventive chamber music group that features Frost faculty clarinet artist Margaret Donaghue Flavin, widely praised for her beautiful and elegant sound; faculty violinist Scott Flavin, concertmaster for the Florida Grand Opera and music director of Miami Mozarteum; and pianist Marina Radiushina, prizewinner of numerous international competitions and artistic director of the Miami Chamber Music Society. For its Festival Miami debut, Pulse has selected an appealing repertoire mix by composers representing China (Sheng), Cuba (Touzet), Hungary (Bermel), Russia (Arutiunian), and the U.S. (Hindman and Bond).

DAWN UPSHAW, soprano MARIA SCHNEIDER, composer HENRY MANCINI INSTITUTE ORCHESTRA Maria Schneider, guest conductor DOROTHY HINDMAN, Q&A host Metropolitan Opera star soprano Dawn Upshaw and celebrated composer-conductor Maria Schneider perform the Florida premiere of their three-time Grammy Award winning project, Winter Morning Walks, with the Frost School’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra. NPR describes it as “lyrical, flowing, intimately expressive… music to fall in love with the first time.” Dawn Upshaw was deemed “one of the most consequential performers of our time” by the Los Angeles Times and has performed at the Met over 300 times. Maria Schneider’s compositions are hailed as “evocative, majestic, magical.” In this amazing nine-part song cycle, Schneider melds her compositional mastery to the poetry of Ted Kooser, Poet Laureate of the United States from 2004 to 2006. The second half of the program features Schneider’s music set to English translations of Carlos Drummond de Andrade poetry by Mark Strand. Auditioned Frost Opera Theater singers, coached by Dawn Upshaw, will also participate.

Gary Green Conducts Fascinating Rhythm, Porgy and Bess, and More
Hearing and seeing two pianists perform while facing each other at two nested grand pianos is an auditory and visual delight; the husband-and-wife pianists Genova and Dimitrov bring unforgettable artistry and fiery passion to the stage every time they step into the spotlight. Aglika Genova and Liuben Dimitrov are the artistic directors of the Dranoff International Two-Piano Competition. Their playing is described as “Pure Harmony! Captivating!” by Berliner Morgenpost, and Claudio Abbado called them “THE piano duo of the younger generation.” Hear their brilliant piano magic unfold as they perform two-piano masterworks by Chopin, Arensky, Borodin, and Liszt with finesse and fireworks. They will also perform Martha and Mary Meditation by Frost School Dean Shelly Berg, commissioned by St. Martha’s Church in Miami Shores for the most recent Dranoff International Two-Piano Competition.

Bassist Steve Bailey, who will be honored at the concert as the 2014 Frost Distinguished Alumnus, is known for his threefingered bass technique and awe-inspiring command of harmonics and chords. He has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Jethro Tull, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, to name a few. Bassist Victor Wooten has been called “the most influential bassist since Jaco Pastorius.” He is a founding member of Béla Fleck & The Flecktones and is a five-time Grammy Award winner.
