Weeks Center for Recording and
Performance, Clarke Recital Hall. Tickets are available individually or as a four-ticket series.
Efforts at Understanding
Tuesday, September 5, 2017, 7:30 p.m. This lecture examines how dreams, ideas, and imagery allow us to deal with forces we can neither see nor control, but hope to placate. In this manner, tales beget legends that, in turn, beget myths, offering magical revelations that become embedded in our minds and lives as religion.
Evidence of Muses
Tuesday, September 12, 2017, 7:30 p.m. This talk addresses humanity’s need to embody, personify, and demystify the unseen powers around us. Rooted in polytheism yet transformed into monotheism, the muses have through the ages adopted changing identities, complex personalities, and multiple attributes that both confound and inspire.
Value of Muses
Tuesday, September 19, 2017, 7:30 p.m. In this presentation, Professor Emeritus Cooper considers our debt to intuitive insight and enlightenment. We are fascinated by those who strive beyond the mundane and, through will and skill, achieve the extraordinary. We then evaluate them, rank them, and, sometimes, even canonize them as heroes and guiding lights.
The Future of Muses
Tuesday, September 26, 2017, 7:30 p.m. This evening's lecture addresses the pursuit of ideas through hard work and persistence, opening the portal to epiphanies and flashes of illumination. The human subconscious then erupts into our awareness to solve problems or even create a masterpiece. The muses may respond to our needs— but only when and as they will.
