REACH NEW HEIGHTS THIS SUMMER! We know that summer 2021 will be a summer our campers will cherish. A summer to emerge triumphant. A summer to reconnect with friends and rediscover what it means to be a child or a teenager in our society. A summer to reach new heights. With that in mind, we are already planning how we will make summer 2021 our best summer yet! Numerous program offerings allow families to select from a broad range of options that appeal to each camper’s interests and needs. From traditional overnight camp, to horseback riding and farm camps, to survival and adventure programs, there’s truly something for everyone here. Although the safety and health of our camps has always been our number one priority, we recognize that summer 2021 may be quite different in terms of safety precautions. We’re already making preparations for what we can and will do if we need to continue with many of the new habits all of us have had to develop, from social distancing to mask wearing, to changes to our meals and cabin capacities, to new sanitation procedures and healthcare protocols. On the other hand, we know a sense of normalcy will also be needed. All of the programs within these pages are rich with long-treasured summer camp traditions and activities – such as storytelling around the campfire, hiking, archery, boating, and more. And as always, everything we do is, and always will be, guided by our signature core values: caring, community, diversity, honesty, inclusiveness, respect, responsibility, and stewardship. The most enduring aspect of Frost Valley summer camp is our commitment to ensuring that an engaging, growth-filled summer is available for all. Campers become bunkmates with new friends of varying backgrounds, abilities, and beliefs. They are guided by counselors and role models to help campers create a welcoming, lively community. Thanks to programs that focus on inclusiveness paired with our commitment to respecting and honoring everyone’s unique differences, we hear one phrase over and over again: “Frost Valley is my home away from home.” We believe all children deserve a place where they can safely unlock their potential, surrounded by a community that embraces them for who they are. SUMMER OVERNIGHT CAMP Imagine you’re here in the Catskills on a warm summer day. You hike up the trail toward the cool spray of High Falls. Later, you and your new friends start a game of gaga ball that you’ll be laughing about for the next week. Or maybe you, along with our experienced camp staff, choose to climb up the 40-foot Y Tower, soar down the zipline, join a choreographed dance routine or go for a horseback ride on the trails. By then you’ll want to cool off with a plunge in the refreshing waters of Lake Cole. Day turns to night and the air grows cooler, but the crackling campfire keeps you and your cabin-mates warm. You’re making s’mores and telling stories beneath a blanket of stars. New friends feel as comfortable as family. Counselors lead the sing-along. The summer seems perfectly endless. The night does, too. And soon dawn breaks. There are pancakes in the dining hall, the sleepy, smiling faces of all your friends, and you get to enjoy another day in the Valley all over again!

Enrolling in a Frost Valley camp program opens a world of opportunities in leadership, skill building, and appreciation for the natural world. FROST VALLEY STAFF Frost Valley YMCA is dedicated to hiring only the most qualified and experienced counselors to care for our campers. Many have been with us since they were young, journeying from camper to counselor in training (CiT) to counselor. They know our history, culture, traditions, and terrain as if they have Frost Valley in their DNA. Before being hired, all Frost Valley YMCA staff over 18, including our counselors, are given background and criminal history checks. Counselors undergo extensive training in our policies and procedures, which stress health and safety. For more about our staff, see page 9.

TRADITIONAL OVERNIGHT CAMP
CAMP WAWAYANDA (GRADES 2-7)
Many young campers spend their first nights away from home in Camp Wawayanda, where they discover a cabin full of new friends waiting to meet them and form lifelong bonds. Our staff are specially trained to care for and address the needs of young children, especially in the areas of homesickness and developing new social skills. Children grow alongside one another and discover that differences can be celebrated and triumphs are often shared. Camp Wawayanda is a traditional overnight camp where, during two-week sessions, children build independence while choosing from a wide range of activities based on age, interest, and ability. Campers gain confidence, new skills, and good friends as they climb the Y-tower, hike to High Falls, canoe across Lake Cole, and learn from role models from around the world.

TRADITIONAL OVERNIGHT CAMP
CAMP HENRY HIRD (GRADES 8-10)
At Camp Henry Hird, teens come together for two weeks at a time to enjoy a wide range of camp offerings, including extended overnight camping trips on the trail, and adventure courses like the Giant’s Ladder and Leap of Faith. These experiences may seem like pure fun and excitement (and they are!) but our staff design each activity to promote lifelong traits of character, such as leadership skills, conflict resolution and problem solving skills as well as an attitude of embracing diversity and inclusion. On a daily basis, we witness the transformation from camper to young leader, as teens exceed their own expectations and become confident, socially responsible stewards of the natural world.

Our staff lead this instructional and recreational program on our own Lake Cole, under supervision of certified lifeguards. We offer canoeing as well as rowing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and a ton of water sports!

ALL-CAMP EVENTS
SMALL WORLD FAIR (1ST SESSION) The Fourth of July begins, like all other days, with a flag raising ceremony. However, for our Independence Day celebration, the entire camp joins together around the flagpole to sing a rousing happy birthday to America. During the day, campers participate in activities to celebrate this patriotic day. Later, we invite our summer staff to participate in a Small World Fair, where campers participate in sharing the history and traditions of a variety of cultures.
OLYMPIX (2ND SESSION) Every summer, the Olympix spirit sweeps through camp when Frost Valley hosts our annual Olympix championship. Competing countries vary from year to year and are represented by groups of campers. The opening ceremony commences the night before with dances, skits, and songs representing the cultural traditions of each country. Team unity and pride are on full display, but it’s the spirit of Frost Valley that rises strong. Let the games begin!
CARNIVALLEY (3RD SESSION) CarniValley is our Session 3 all-camp activity, the greatest carnival to ever take place at Frost Valley! At CarniValley, records will be set that will go down in camp history in our Frost Valley Book of World Records! The competition is always friendly and a wide range of carnival games will be enjoyed by all. Campers can earn tickets on behalf of their village. The village with the most tickets at the end will receive a special prize!
HIRDSTOCK (4TH SESSION) Hirdstock, a camp-wide music festival inspired by the original Woodstock, takes place during the fourth session. Campers participate in arts and crafts, games, an air guitar competition, and other activities on Hirdstock Field. But the main attraction is always the music. Performances and musical acts by campers and counselors draw the positive vibes of all present.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHO SUPERVISES MY CHILD? Many of our summer staff members were campers who became CiTs and then counselors, so they know Frost Valley YMCA better than most. Others join us from around the world as international staff. Many return year after year, giving Frost Valley a family environment and a true sense of culture and tradition. Counselors undergo extensive training on our policies and procedures which stress health and safety first. In-depth background and criminal history checks are performed on all of our employees. We follow the American Camp Association standards by providing a 1 to 6 counselor to camper ratio. For younger campers, this ratio is often smaller. To ensure a welcoming and familiar community, roughly 70% of our staff return each summer.
WHAT IF MY CHILD WHERE WILL MY GETS SICK? CHILD SLEEP? The Guenther Family Wellness Center, located on camp, is staffed by registered nurses and emergency responders 24 hours a day. If your child gets sick, you will be notified immediately while your child receives the care they need. To learn more, email: ddauria@frostvalley.org
WHAT WILL MY CHILD EAT? Three hot, wholesome meals are served daily. Our dining hall offers a vast array of options from the typical kid fare to organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options. Care is taken to meet the dietary needs of all of our campers. Fresh fruit is available for snacking all day long. Chartwells Educational Dining Service creates the menus, ensuring that each meal is nutritionally balanced. Candy and soda are not served nor sold in the Camp Store.
The majority of our campers reside in cabins and lodges, with some specialty programs - East Valley Ranch, Farm, and Adventure Camps - staying in yurts and tents. These arrangements all promise the opportunity for friendships to flourish naturally and with ease, while under the close supervision of counselors and village coordinators. We honor one mutual bunk request per camper.
IS TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE? We offer bus transportation to and from camp in these neighborhoods: Brooklyn NY, Montclair NJ, and Manhattan! The cost is $80.00 per camper, one way. For more information, please contact us at campregistration@frostvalley.org.
IS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE? Frost Valley YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign raises money for “camperships” to provide a Frost Valley experience for nearly 600 children who would not otherwise be able to join us. For more information about our camperships and to start the application process, email: campregistration@frostvalley.org.
COVID-19: As you know, our priority is always the health and safety of all campers and staff. As such, we will provide information about health and safety protocols regarding Covid-19 in the coming months. The Frost Valley staff collaborates on a regular basis and partners with local, state, national, and international agencies to remain informed and proactive as new information develops.
RENOWNED STAFF TRAINING! All Frost Valley camp staff, including returning staff, experience up to three weeks of rigorous training. Beyond First Aid and CPR, staff also receive training on child development, risk management, homesickness, and more. For example, in 2018 prominent parenting expert Dr. Deborah Gilboa (as seen on the Today Show) inspired our staff with a thought-provoking, informative talk on character development.

This includes long pants to protect the legs, socks, hard smooth-soled shoes with heels (preferably boots), and a properly fitted and secured helmet, provided by the camp. I understand the risks and release Frost Valley YMCA, and the directors, trustees, officers, volunteers and employees of Frost Valley YMCA, from all liability for damages or injuries resulting from all camp activities, negligence or defects in the preparation, instruction, or equipment involved in camp activities in or around Frost Valley YMCA. ADVENTURE VILLAGE (GRADES 5-9)
Adventure Village is organized into two minivillages, Woodwise (Grades 5-7) and Sequoia (Grades 8 & 9), both with the same mission: to help campers become lifetime lovers of the outdoors! Combining the best of Overnight Camp and Adventure Trips, campers choose their adventure from activities like climbing, day-long hikes exploring trails and creek beds, orienteering, ropes courses, and outdoor skills. Campers in the village will also experience a four to five day mini trip to either the Adirondacks for canoeing and backpacking, the Catskills for backpacking, the Shawangunks for climbing, or a backpacking trip across our 5,500-acre camp.

Adventure Village’s home base is tucked in the woods between two converging mountain creeks with a communal Mongolian Yurt in the center. ADVENTURE SURVIVAL CAMP (ASC) If your camper is up for a thrilling challenge and wants to learn how to camp primitively, our Adventure Survival Camp is a great option for them. They will focus on how to camp and hike as people did hundreds of years ago, with a deep knowledge and appreciation for the environment around them and without modern gear and equipment. Under careful supervision, your camper will gain valuable outdoor survival skills, as they’re encouraged to grow in scenarios such as: •

The Adirondack Paddler is for the waterloving adventurer looking to develop their paddling skills and their confidence as a team member. From paddling small streams to large lakes to whitewater this trip offers opportunities to empower young women in addition to mastering paddling skills. Come join us for the experience of a lifetime making lasting memories and connections while calling some of the clearest waters in the country your home for two weeks.
The Adirondack Hike and Climb trip is an entry-level trip for the adventurer at heart. Campers will learn backcountry camping skills like orienteering, fire building and backcountry cooking. Campers will also test their limits and find the value of teamwork. They will spend half their time backpacking in the remote wilderness of the Adirondacks, summiting high peaks and camping by pristine lakes, and the other half of their time will be spent learning to rock climb on some of the Adirondacks’ most celebrated crags.

LEADERSHIP TRIPS In our Leadership Track, participants will gain experience and confidence in the technical skills of backcountry camping while developing their leadership skill. From cooking a meal over a stove, reading a map and compass, or managing a campsite, participants will gain a deeper comfort and appreciation for nature and the outdoors. With guidance from our Trip Leaders, campers will begin taking on different roles amongst their trip mates and become decision makers of the trip. These trips are for campers who have had experience with wilderness camping or have a strong desire to participate in it.

ADIRONDACK CLASSIC (boys & girls, grades 9-12) SESSION 2-3: 7/11-8/6 (4 WEEKS) This trip, for the adventure camper ready to take on real leadership responsibilities, has it all; backpacking, climbing, and paddling in New York’s biggest state park. As a camper who has built up their leadership skills across other trips or programs, you will have the opportunity to make some of your own route, gear, cooking, and group management decisions while you bond with a small group of campers who will be life-long friends. This trip sets you up well for an AiT experience.

SERVICE TRIPS Our service trips are for campers who want to make a difference and see the amazing impact that service can have on the world and on themselves. We offer four very different service trips so campers can connect to a type of service that is meaningful to them. Campers who participate in our service trips will receive a signed letter recognizing them for at least 35 hours of service per trip.
ADIRONDACK TRAIL BUILDERS
(boys & girls, grades 9-12) SESSION 4: 8/8-20 Join us on an adventure that gives back to a place that we visit frequently: the Adirondacks. Last summer, over 60 participants went on this journey for 100+ days all throughout the Adirondacks so this is an amazing opportunity to help maintain the trails we use so often. This trip will entail different projects such as clearing brush, building bridges, and digging water dams. Campers will receive 35 hours of community service for their volunteer work.
CATSKILL TRAIL BUILDERS
(boys & girls, grades 9-12) SESSION 1: 6/27-7/9 | SESSION 3: 7/25-8/6 Join us in the Forever Wild Catskill Mountains as we help maintain our trails and complete service work for our local community. Campers will learn all about trail building and gain knowledge and skill in digging water trenches, clearing overgrown brush, creating vista points and doing other projects on the nearby trails. Campers will earn up to 35 hours of community service. On days off, they’ll explore the best vista points in the area and visit the local fire towers.

Frost Valley YMCA’s horse programs are ideal for campers who want to live the life of an equestrian, but also participate in traditional camp activities. Campers spend half of each day learning the basics of horsemanship and developing riding skills, while the remainder of the day is devoted to a wide range of other camp activities, including swimming in the lake, hiking, arts and crafts, climbing, overnight camping trips, and more. Campers live in a lodge or cabin with counselors who have exceptional skills with horses and childcare. No previous riding experience is required.

1B: JULY 4 - 9 2B: JULY 18 - 23 3B: AUG 1 - 6 4B: AUG 15 - 20 Saddle up and hit the trail for this exciting horse trekking adventure through pristine Catskill Mountain trails. Spend full days exploring nature on horseback and cozy nights sitting by the fire reflecting on the day, making memories with new friends, and sleeping under the stars. Riders will have full responsibility for caring for their horse while on the trail. Learn outdoor wilderness skills while packing out at campsites. In addition to polishing equestrian skills, there will be plenty of non-horse adventures! This challenging yet fun excursion requires that riders be confident walking/ trotting a horse and comfortable in the great outdoors. Located just one mile from Farm Camp, East Valley Ranch is set in a picturesque location dedicated to providing campers with an exceptional experience working with horses and enjoying summer camp. This program is designed for campers with all levels of horse experience from all disciplines and our highly knowledgeable and passionate staff are eager to help them develop confidence in their abilities both in the saddle and in life. The East Valley Ranch programs teach primarily Western style horseback riding techniques, but experience from all backgrounds and disciplines are welcome. Campers sleep in yurts arranged by age and enjoy their own private dining hall and a variety of program areas.

Young equestrians will learn not only how to ride, but also the responsibility that comes along with caring for horses. Campers are assigned a horse for the whole session and spend half of their day at the barn, focusing on their riding technique and learning about grooming, tacking, veterinary care, and training techniques. Another portion of each day is spent hiking, completing high and low ropes elements, boating, and making arts and crafts. Campers will enjoy swimming several times each week, an overnight camping experience, and an all-camp day focused on a theme.
During their second week, campers can choose a specialty program either trail riding, where they spend the week exploring on our 14-mile network of trails or in the arena, focusing on progressing through the fundamentals of riding and good horsemanship.

For older girls, this month-long adventure provides new challenges and opportunities to further advance their riding technique and gain a deeper knowledge of horses. Girls spend half of their day with the horses, working on horse training techniques and learning about what it takes to own your own horse. Throughout the month they will design and practice their own drill team show and prepare and head out on an overnight under the stars with their horses. Four-Week Campers will also get the chance to take part in traditional camp activities. This program helps build strong, independent, and experienced equestrians.

FARM CAMP (GRADES 2-10)
Farm Camp is a working farm set on 515 acres, with a barn full of animals and a colorful garden, both of which are tended to daily by our campers. Here, children learn to care for all kinds of animals and cultivate and harvest the garden. At farm camp, children learn on a deep level what it means to live a healthy life, by eating the very foods they’ve grown and how important it is to be stewards of the earth. Frost Valley Farm Camp’s Mongolian yurts are arranged by age and gender, and campers spend their days integrated as a united community. This gives campers of all ages the chance to learn from one another, mentor others, and develop skills at their own pace.

Campers also enjoy the simple pleasures of summer camp: swimming, boating, playing games and sports, making arts and crafts, and bonding with friends over the campfire. Learn about the care of a variety of livestock including goats, sheep, alpacas, chickens, pigs, cows, and rabbits. Collect eggs, milk goats, muck stalls, harvest veggies, and enjoy family-style meals. RUTH GOTTSCHO DIALYSIS & CHILDREN’S KIDNEY PROGRAM** In partnership with the Ruth Gottscho Kidney Foundation and the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, campers with chronic kidney disease benefit from the solace of nature and the carefree pleasures of summer camp, alongside the wider Frost Valley YMCA community. Supported by experienced staff and the encouragement of other campers, kidney campers do things they never thought possible. They conquer the Giant Swing, row boats across Lake Cole, scale the climbing tower, enjoy tasty s’mores, make new friends, laugh and be silly, and sleep beneath a canopy of stars. Frost Valley YMCA provides unparalleled service and medical attention to these young campers. Dialysis treatments take place in the state-of-the-art Guenther Family Wellness Center, overseen by our caring medical staff.
