it's nice to be
recognized Whew, we made it! Moving into 2012, pausing for a moment to reflect on the lessons learned during 2011, we’re gratified to see the economy is in rebound, prosperity is returning, and while there’s still a ways to go before we get all the way back, at least where we were before all of this stuff started happening is finally in sight. Yes, unemployment is still high, and yes, more people than ever (in recent memory at least) are still pulling mightily to get ends close together—if not exactly meeting.
Even still though, things are much better than they were three years ago. Think about it; back in 2008, it looked like GM and Chrysler were destined for the scrapbooks as once proud, now defunct automakers. Our nation was waging war in two countries; Afghanistan and Iraq—mostly because of a guy who turned out to be in neither country. He was in Pakistan the whole time. Gays had to serve in the military essentially gagged—thanks to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. And, literally millions of children had no health insurance. No, the nation still isn’t perfect, there’s a lot yet to do to get things back on track, and there’s still a great deal of disagreement about the best way to accomplish them. Ironically, even with all the discord, progress has still been made. Hopefully, moving into 2012, we’ll see a coalescing of ideals, enabling the acceleration of the progress we’ve seen over the past three years toward making our country once again an example for the rest of the world to look up to. Of course, the end of each year finds us here at Decisive Media celebrating the triumphs of diversity and inclusion in the auto industry at our annual Urban Wheel Awards event.
This year, we finally got official recognition of what we’ve been all along—the multicultural event of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The NAIS executive committee itself bestowed this honor upon us, so now it’s official, we really are part of the show! It’s interesting how one can toil along year after year, fighting the good fight, doing the right things for the right reasons, all the while getting no recognition for your efforts. Then, one day, someone comes along and says; “Hey, that’s a very cool thing you’re doing. We like that. Keep it up.” When that happens, you find yourself reenergized to go out once again, fight the good fight, do what you know is right, and redouble your efforts to do all you can to change the world for the better, even if it’s only one initiative at a time. Hopefully, by the time we get to the 20th Annual Urban Wheel Awards, we’ll see a correlation of that somewhere else in the nation as well.

sixteenth annual urban wheel awards Decisive Media joins with the auto industry to celebrate diversity
Recognizing diversity in the auto industry, the Urban Wheel Awards event celebrated its sixteenth year of acknowledging diversity and inclusion in the auto industry in Detroit, on January 9, 2012, at the Motor City Casino. Awards were distributed in twelve categories, culminating in the recognition of the 2012 Urban Car of the Year/Hyundai Veloster, 2012 Urban Truck of the Year/Range Rover Evoque, and 2012 Urban Green Car of the Year/ Toyota Prius Plug-in. Hosted by the Emerging Diversity Education Fund and Decisive Media, the theme of this year’s event was “Embracing Multicultural Consumers and Diversity Inclusion in the Automotive Industry.” “Our mission began sixteen years ago as an effort to open the doors of the auto industry to the multicultural community. Over the ensuing years, we have grown and diversified the Urban Wheel Awards’ outreach,” said Decisive Media president/ CEO Randi Payton. “Today the event is reaching a global audience.” Taking on hosting duties were actress Phylicia Rashad and Emmy award-winning newsman and TV host, John Quiñones.

save energy with solar-powered gadgets
written by jeffrey Luis Taylor
Solar technology will play an increasing part in all of our lives going forward but we may be more used to it than we know. Many common gadgets already tap the Sun to create electricity through photovoltaic cells. With ideal conditions, a typical solar-powered device can stay operational between eight to ten hours after approximately ten to twelve hours of exposure (charging) from the Sun. Beyond solar calculators and wristwatches, the following items range in price, but they all require power from the Sun. .
Get a Charge The soBAT II solar powered backup battery and charging unit by Scosche works with almost any handheld USB powered device. You can do a direct charge to a device or place the Scosche soBAT ll in the Sun to collect rays and charge your device later. This is a great feature making it versatile enough to use when jogging, cycling and hiking. The soBAT ll charges handhelds at the same rate as a wall charger. When fully powered the soBAT ll can recharge a cell phone twice. Available at: Wal-Mart and www.scosche. com. Price: $29.99

It’s a Grass Spring is coming, with sunny days and green grass that needs to be cut. The world’s first fully automatic lawn mower, Husqvarna’s Automower Solar Hybrid is powered (in part) by the sun. In addition to a charging station, the Automower comes with a large integrated solar panel. Using sunlight, the solar cells extend cutting periods before a recharge. Unlike gas mowers the Automower has no exhaust emissions. A convenient settings panel allows you to map out your yard and cutting preferences. A timer lets you decide how long you want Automower to cut. Suitable for lawns up to 1/2 acre, depending on light conditions, it’s available at authorized Husqvarna dealers or www.husqvarna.com, Suggested Retail price: $2,999.95 Night Light Using bright LED solar lights around your sidewalk or house means you’ll never need to remember to turn them on and off or bury wires to use electricity. The Stainless-Steel Solar-Powered Lantern by Enchanted Garden runs on rechargeable AAA batteries that soak up power from the Sun. A photo sensor turns the light on at dusk and off at sunrise. Available at most big box home improvement stores, these lights come individually for as little as $2.99, or in sets of six for $14.99 or larger packs.
Weather or Not A very high tech way to keep tabs on your outside environment is a Solar Powered Wireless Weather Station by La Crosse Technology. It comes with a variety of features including inside and outside temperature and inside and outside humidity. Information is gathered via remote sensor. The two AA rechargeable alkalines that are included receive power from the solar cell. Solar Powered Wireless Weather Station by La Crosse Technology is available at Kohl’s stores or www.Kohls.com. agreenerportfolio tips for sustainable and responsible investing
written by Graciela Tiscareño-Sato
Shortly before speaking at the recent San Francisco Green Festival, I found myself standing under a large model of Planet Earth and the words “Too big too fail.” I was asked to write on a dry erase board what I believed was too big to fail. It was a clever festival/ Facebook campaign to get us to imagine what in our own lives matters so deeply that we will not allow its failure, just like our planet. Many of us choose to invest in its vitality with our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle, but there are publicly traded green companies, devoted to alternative fuels for example, that we can choose to invest in by buying stock. At the festival, I met representatives from Calvert Investments who termed the company, a “leader in Sustainable and Responsible Investing (SRI).” When corporate folks introduce themselves as industry leaders, I am typically dubious. But when I asked my friend, Emily Bouchard, a family, wealth, and money coach at the Wealth Legacy Group in the San Francisco Bay area, to recommend resources for me, Calvert was one of two she sent my way. As Emily shared her recommendations, she also reminded me about due diligence and what gets in the way. “When looking at doing something new with your money, familiar patterns of behavior can show up,” she cautioned. “Know that your ‘innocent’ money persona may feel overwhelmed and attempt to derail your good intentions, by avoiding doing what’s uncomfortable and unknown. That’s when seeking out sound advice and getting recommendations from trusted and experienced advisors will make you feel much more competent.” As we begin the New Year, you may have financial goals you want to achieve. One of mine that you may share reads, “Invest x percent of retirement funds in sustainable, greener investments and organizations.”
8
decisive magazine | www.DecisiveMagazine.com
To that end, here are key questions to ask to help you prepare to invest: • What percent of your portfolio are you looking to invest in SRI? • Are you looking to invest in established SRI mutual funds like those managed by Calvert and others? • Are you on the leading edge of SRI and looking for ways to invest in Certified B Corporations (companies with a social agenda) as more come into existence? • Are you looking at established, publicly traded corporations already in your portfolio and reevaluating investment decisions based on their corporate sustainability initiatives and benchmarks? • Are you looking to separate the truly green companies from the “green washers” (fakes) before you invest? The Internet offers many sites, like www.greenerchoices.org, that can help steer you in the right direction. • How much reading do you want to do before you invest in entities that function as if our planet matters? As you answer these questions, you’ll be well on your way to narrowing down how you want to start and where you want to put your first chunks of money. Sitting down with a financial advisor after you have achieved this first clarity will undoubtedly make it easier for you to go from wanting to invest in greener, more socially responsible entities, to actually becoming an investor in 2012. d D

Tuskegee Airmen take the screen
It’s 1944, as the war in Europe continues to take its toll on Allied forces the Pentagon brass has no recourse but to consider unorthodox options — including the untried and untested African-American pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program.
Thus is the hook upon which the new Lucasfilm production, Red Tails, is hung. That’s right, the Star Wars/Indiana Jones/George Lucas-owned — Lucasfilm. George Lucas was first told about the Tuskegee Airmen and how their legacy was partly responsible for the ignition of the Civil Rights movement in 1988. Remarkably though, even a George Lucas couldn’t get a major studio to back the production of the film. Ultimately, Lucas put up the $58 million dollars to produce the film himself. Lucas chose Anthony Hemingway, who directed HBO’s The Wire and Treme, to shepherd the production. The film features the Oscar
winning actor, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Terrence Howard, two of the most noted African-American actors working today. Many see the production of Red Tails as a triumph for Black actors and Black storytelling on film. Lucas says; "If I can break through with this movie, then hopefully there will be someone else out there saying let's make a prequel and a sequel, and soon you’ll have more Black producers out there doing quality film." Red Tails opens nationwide January 20, 2012. For more on the production including trailers and interviews with George Lucas, Tuskegee Airmen and Anthony Hemingway, visit DecisiveMag.com.d D

also pretty wasteful. A tremendous amount of resources go into creating a truly magnificent evening dress. Consuming all of that to wear something just once, maybe twice, and then squirreling it away in your closet, borders seriously on irresponsible. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Thanks to the efforts of entrepreneurs like JaiHonna German and the concept of her innovative boutique, Dress: Luxury Attire On Loan, you can go haute couture and be environmentally conscious too. An added bonus is Dress puts designers like Carolina Herrera, Dolce and Gabbana, Donna Karan and Marchesa Notte well within
reach—if only for night. Rather than buying the dress outright and wearing it once—or twice at most—consider renting the evening gown the same way gentlemen rent tuxedos. You’ll look absolutely fabulous, save significant amounts of money, and consume fewer of the Earth’s resources in the process. And, if you fall in love with a dress and absolutely must have it in your personal collection, JaiHonna holds two blowout sales at Dress each year. This gives you a chance to come back and make your favorite gown yours to keep— you know, uh, until they’ve seen you in it twice and you have to go get something else . d D

Little does anyone know… High fashion is one of life’s many pleasures. We love to dress up and we feel good when we look good. Sadly, high fashion can also be one of the most expensive and least “Green” activities many of us will ever engage in. While that fabulous gown may indeed bring you tremendous pleasure when you’re sleekly sheathed within its sensuous shell, if it’s too memorable, it will usually only get worn once—maybe twice at best. After all, once they see you in it, you have to go get something else—no? This can run into huge money if you’re someone with a very active social life, and it’s

Take Black History Month seriously this year with getaways to visit inspiring African-American monuments. And it doesn’t get any bigger than a national memorial. As of Aug. 28, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. now stands regally cut

Washington, D.C.’s National Mall. Why visit the MLK Memorial and where should you stay when you go? And, what about other top black memorials and statues? Here’s a primer on the top African American monuments with some colorful hotel tips too.

best black statues Washington DC: Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Dedicated just this past summer, The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is worth the trip to DC. The sight is scenic as MLK’s proud form stands tall on the edge of a nature-filled tidal basin. So far, millions of tourists have flocked here to view Dr. King’s image as well as to marvel and appreciate the dedication of those who created this hard-fought memorial. Although the rooms are rather small, The Harrington Hotel is a classic DC property. Clean, comfortable and reasonably-priced, “The Harrington” is just two blocks from The National Mall and other major DC attractions. Double-decked tour buses run right from the hotel, so make sure to book a seat through the hotel’s concierge. Don’t miss eating downstairs at Harriett’s Family Restaurant or across the street at the lively Harry’s Restaurant.
Not surprisingly, the United States doesn’t have many black memorials. However, the country does boast a long list of statues dedicated to famous African Americans. Here’s a list of the top statues when visiting major U.S. travel destinations: jimi hendrix statue
Los Angeles: California African American Museum The California African American Museum is located on the grounds of Exposition Park. The 44,000 sq. ft. museum has three galleries, a theatre, an outdoor sculpture garden, a conference center, an archive and a research library. Permanent and traveling exhibits include both historic and contemporary black artists. The neighborhood surrounding the museum isn’t full of hotels (although the USC campus is here), so think about staying near downtown’s entertainment complex, L.A. Live. The Staples Center and the L.A. Convention Center convene on this spot and now L.A. Live is a central complex full of restaurants, shops, clubs and hotels. Right in the center of the action is the JW Marriott Hotel with its striking all-glass tower. Rooms are contemporary, plush and some come with stunning LA city views all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Lower Manhattan: African American Burial Ground The African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan is a memorial to the remains of more than 400 Africans who were buried here on the 17th and 18th centuries. However, archaeologists believe perhaps more than 20,000 burials occurred on this cemetery and art-filled national park near New York City Hall. Although The Millenium Hilton suffered damage from the 9/11 attacks (it sits directly across from Ground Zero), this 50-story hotel was completely refurbished in 2003. Rooms take advantage of the floor-to-ceiling glass windows for stunning city views (in some rooms). Hilton’s “serenity” beds and 42-inch TVs make the rooms here a cozy oasis in the busy city. From this central location, NYC tourists can walk just 10-15 minutes to such iconic attractions as city hall, Wall Street, The New York Stock Exchange, South Street Seaport, Chinatown and Battery Park.
Atlanta: A poetic Tupac Shakur monument is located outside Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts. Boston: The dramatic Crispus Attucks statue atop a white marble base punctuates Boston Common. Detroit: A post-modern Joe Louis tribute sculpture rocks the corner of Jefferson Avenue at Woodward.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Located in the center of the battle ground for equality during the 60s, Birmingham, Alabama’s Birmingham Civil Right Institute is a museum and living memorial. The institute holds permanent and traveling art and educational exhibits mostly focusing on the struggle for civil rights in the South. A kid-friendly place, the institute includes fascinating oral history videos and some interactive exhibits. Birmingham’s “civil rights district” does not have any hotels, but the downtown can be easily reached via the city’s DART subway system. The Tutwiler Hotel, which is now managed by Hampton Suites & Inns, is a historic property in downtown Birmingham just one block from the transit station. Mainly a business hotel, The Tutwiler is actually an affordable, convenient, clean and family-friendly place for any stay in Birmingham.d
Harlem: The serene Harriett Tubman bronze stands along Frederick Douglass Boulevard. Don’t miss the soulstirring Adam Clayton Powell memorial (on 7th Avenue between 125th and 126th streets). Also, a Malcolm X statue stands proudly in the historic Audubon Ballroom of Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood. Nashville: Scholarly W.E.B. Dubois statue sits on the campus of all-black college Fisk University. Seattle: Breakthrough rocker Jimi Hendrix plays a bronze guitar near Cal Anderson Park at the corner of Broadway and East Pine Avenue.
