Morris Chestnut's A Roaring Fire in The Best Man Holiday
®
The holiday season has come around once again. There’s a new crispness to the air; days are shorter and nights are longer. It’s time to slow down, reconnect, and let a little bit of extra love show.
And frankly, this is the best gift you can share during the holiday season. A good friend of mine commutes into the city by train to work everyday. On her short walk from the station to her office, she passes a spot where a homeless man and his dog usually sit. As you can imagine, in a bustling city during commute time, PLUS: few people give the pair a second glance. Of the 2014 New Car Buyer's Guide few that do, a tiny minority will give the man a few The Year's Best Cars, bucks or some food or whatever. A pet owner, my Trucks, and SUVs friend realized the dog probably doesn’t get treats Win A 2014 the way her beloved canine does. So she’s taken to Hyundai Sonata! carrying dog treats with her to work everyday to share with the dog whenever she sees them. Also Inside: For The Holidays: Another friend retired recently, and has been en2014's Urban Automobiles > The Smart Watch Is Finally Here of The Year Finalists joying her first year of freedom traveling and visiting > Golden Holiday Gift Shopping Tips In The Urban Wheel Awards People's > African-American Jewelry Designers Choice Sweepstakes (Page 29) friends with whom she had little time to spend while > How To Find Last Minute Cruise Deals she was working. A former furniture store owner, Get Your Subscription to Decisive Digital at www.DecisiveMagazine.com she repays her friends while she stays with them by helping them do redecorating projects they’ve wanted to do for some time but didn’t have time to execute. Helping her friends in this way, she’s occupying her free time, visiting with her close friends, showing them love, and making a difference in their lives all at the same time. While these gestures can be performed all year around, they are also examples of how letting love show can make a difference. If you’re considering gifting during the holiday season—which most of us are—rather than a material good, consider performing a needed service, or look for an alternative way to bring some joy into somebody’s life. Yes, I know this is a consumer magazine, and yes, I know we live in a consumer-oriented society wherein the fastest and easiest way to show your love is by doling out yet another trinket. But frankly, giving you, helping someone you love, will be remembered much longer than any material good will ever be. Long after the gift-wrapping has been removed and the new gadget swaddled within has run its course and become an obsolete object stuffed in a drawer somewhere, a single thoughtful act of kindness will continue to enhance the lives of those for whom you care. When you give of yourself, you give the gift that keeps on giving. Happy Holidays!

THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY Hard to believe it’s been 14 years since we got introduced to Malcolm Lee’s ensemble of young upwardly mobile friends in the film The Best Man. The sequel, The Best Man Holiday, picks up where the original film left off—with the rivalries intact, as well as the friendships and the unrequited love. Will Harper and Lance finally put the past behind them, realize their foibles, and patch things up? There’s only one way to find out. Monica Calhoun, Melissa De Sousa, Regina Hall, Terence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, and Harold Perrineau reprise their roles from the original film, along with Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs.

BLACK NATIVITY In this modern retelling of the story of the birth of Jesus, Jennifer Hudson plays a Baltimore single mother who must send her 16-year-old son (portrayed by Jacob Latimore in his second film outing) to live with his grandparents (lovingly depicted by Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett) during the holidays in Harlem. The film Black Nativity is a reworking of Langston Hughes’ 1961 off-Broadway gospel musical depicting the birth of Jesus Christ. With outstanding musical performances by Hudson, Latimore, and Mary J. Blige, the film has the potential to become one of those perennial holiday classics. Kasi Lemmons, who previously directed the film Eve’s Bayou, helms the film.
movieguide OLDBOY Spike Lee goes mainstream (sort of) with the action thriller Oldboy. For this remake of the South Korean cult film in which an advertising executive is kidnapped and held in solitary confinement for 20 years, Lee cast Josh Brolin in the starring role. While being held, Brolin’s character learns he is a suspect in the murder of his wife and by extension his child is now orphaned. Sam Jackson also has a turn in the film, marking the first time Lee and Jackson have worked together since Jackson portrayed the crack addicted character of “Gator” in Lee’s 1991 joint, Jungle Fever. Speaking of which, fans of Lee’s prior work should be advised, Oldboy is the darkest, most hyper-violent film Spike Lee has ever made. Could be why this one is labeled a Spike Lee Film in the ads—rather than a Spike Lee Joint.
MANDELA: A LONG WALK TO FREEDOM The charismatic Idris Elba takes on his most challenging role to date as “Nelson Mandela” in Long Walk To Freedom. Based upon the autobiography of the much-revered South African former president, political prisoner, and freedom fighter, Long Walk To Freedom promises to be a serious Oscar contender, and may well propel Elba into the ranks of international superstardom. There have been other portrayals of Mandela in cinema; most recently Morgan Freeman’s turn as the iconic leader in the sports film Invictus. However, this is the first motion picture based on Mandela’s book, and quite possibly the most comprehensive cinematic telling of his life’s story.
TYLER PERRY’S A MADEA CHRISTMAS Tyler Perry’s seventeenth film marks his first outing with a Christmas theme. Adapted from the play of the same name (also written, produced and directed by Perry), the film finds our loveably wizened (and wisecracking) protagonist spending Christmas in one of Georgia’s reddest redneck country towns. A classic fish-out-of water tale, of course everybody reading this knows Madea is going to have everybody in that town good and straight by the end of the movie. And yes, there will be a lot of laughs along the way. With Perry’s “Madea” playing off of the likes of Larry The Cable Guy, hilarity is absolutely guaranteed. quickfitnesstips STAYING TRIM NEEDN’T CONSUME YOUR DAY
In today's busy, high-tech era, women are carrying more and more responsibility. Society expects them to earn a living; climb the corporate ladder; manage a home; and provide for the family by cooking, cleaning, doing laundry and helping care for them. In addition, these women —who are spread too thinly and on-call 24/7— are expected to look good and feel good.
Many women say to themselves, "I used to be very active and worked out every day. These days, I find it hard to fit exercise and diet into my day." They often ask, "What can I do, and where can I start?" This simple question typically gets a not-so-simple answer. But it can be; here are some quick tips for those busy women. • Get on a scale, take a photo, and set a goal. You must start somewhere. Find out where you are today. Then, set a small, short-term, obtainable goal. Write it down next to your photo. • MyFitnessPal.com. THE SMARTWATCH HAS ARRIVED With the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, society is one step closer to Dick Tracy’s two-way wrist TV from the old Chester Gould comic strip. Actually, when the strip originated in 1946, Tracy had a two-way wrist radio. In 1964, Gould upgraded the device to a TV. However, even after the upgrade, Tracy could use his watch for communications, but nothing else.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch does considerably more, although it doesn’t support video streaming—yet. Designed to work with Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, the Galaxy Gear permits the operation of a number of the Galaxy Note 3’s functions from your wrist, without removing the phone from your pocket, purse, or briefcase. The Galaxy Gear will place and receive phone calls; trigger and interact with certain apps, record voice memos, and provide access to the photo gallery stored on the Galaxy Note 3. It also functions as a digital still camera. As of right now, it only works with the Galaxy Note 3, but Samsung reps say functionality with other devices is just over the horizon. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 smartphone is the company’s latest entry in what is being termed as the “Phablet” marketplace. Considerably larger than an iPhone, but much smaller than an iPad, the Galaxy Note 3 brings a lot of the functionality and visibility of the tablet computer to a device easily capable of comfortably functioning as a phone too. Given the size of the Galaxy Note 3 (the device uses a 5.7-inch screen—an iPad Mini uses a seven-inch screen), having the Galaxy Gear watch makes using the Galaxy Note 3 considerably more convenient. With the watch, you only have to handle the phone itself when you need to read or interact with something on its screen. When that’s a necessity, you probably won’t mind the size of the Galaxy Note 3 so much. In fact, it might even be an asset. On the other hand, handling something that significantly sized as a phone on a regular bass, we think could become somewhat unwieldy over time. The Galaxy Gear retails for $299, as does the Galaxy Note 3.d D

ledholidaylights MAKE A LASTING IMPRESSION
homes for a year. LED holiday lights decrease electricity consumption considerably. According to the DOE, these are the expenses for the typical holiday light sources; Electricity costs for a six-foot tree, illuminated 12 hours a day for 40 days: Incandescent C-9 lights: $10.00 LED C-9 lights: $0.27 Incandescent Mini-lights: $2.74 LED Mini-lights : $0.82
Whether yours twinkle in multiple colors or sparkle in all white, holiday lights are a must-use element in nearly all homeowners' seasonal decorating schemes. What’s more, those lights — once reserved for the tree — have today migrated to multiple spots both inside and outside the home. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), while LED lights cost less to operate and last longer than incandescent lights, most holiday lights are still powered by incandescent light sources. Fortunately though, that's changing, thanks to the wider availability of LED holiday lights. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) researchers have found LED holiday lights have an estimated lifespan of 40 holiday seasons and are more resistant to breakage—thanks to their epoxy lenses—than incandescent versions. But their real impact comes from the cost of electricity. In addition to their longer burn life, LED holiday lights decrease utility bills and provide a safer light source. The Environmental Protection Agency reports the U.S. uses 2.22 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year to power miniature holiday lights. This is enough electricity to energize 1,300
Estimated cost of buying and operating lights for 10 holiday seasons: Incandescent C-9 lights : $122.19 LED C-9 lights: $17.99 Incandescent Minilights: $55.62 LED Mini-lights: $33.29
LED holiday lighting options include: Miniature, small and directional: Classic holiday lights with brilliant illumination and direct lighting. C5, C7, C8, C9: Bulb-like (also called "strawberry") LED holiday lights offered in a variety of sizes. G12: Often referred to as "raspberry lights," these round LED holiday strings of lights are available in either multi-colored or white versions. Net and icicle: These LED holiday lights have surged in popularity in recent years. They're often used to cover shrubs or dangle from eaves. Battery operated: Battery-operated LED holiday lights used to simulate candles or other flickering sources. TIP: Check the LED holiday light box for the Energy-Star label. urban car of the year
FINALISTS Each year, as part of the Urban Wheel Awards event, Decisive Media names the Urban Car, Truck, and Green Vehicle of the year. The Urban Wheel Awards judging panel spent several months determining the most stylish, practical and attainable new vehicles for 2014, by driving and evaluating dozens of cars and trucks in a variety of North American urban settings before settling on the three winners.
The multicultural/multigender Urban Vehicles of the Year judging council is comprised of some of the most notable and respected automotive reviewers in the country. The panel includes: Motorweek’s Yolanda Vazquez, Frank Washington of AboutThatCar, Camilo Alfaro of Autoproyecto, Joe Tralongo of AutoTrader, and Ken Panton of eCityofStyle. The winning Urban Vehicles of the Year will be honored at the 18th Annual Urban Wheel Awards (UWA)—the official multicultural event of the North American International Auto Show—on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at the Marriott Renaissance in Detroit, Michigan. There will also be an Urban Car of The Year People’s Choice award for the first time this year. For information on how you can participate in the selection of the winner of that one, and potentially win a brand new Hyundai Sonata in the process, see the inside back cover of this issue.

URBAN GREEN VEHICLE OF THE YEAR BMW I3 “BMW's first clean sheet electric car is touted to have a range of up to 100 miles, attain the equivalent of 93 mpg, and get from zero to 60 in seven seconds. Further, with its light-weight carbon body and dried-grass composite instrument panel, the all-new BMW electric car takes the notion of being ‘green’ quite literally.” —Mary Chapman, Freelance Automotive Reviewer
CADILLAC ELR “The Cadillac ELR proves green doesn’t have to be boring. From a styling standpoint, the ELR knocks it out of the park. Plus, its interior amenities are exactly what you’d expect from a car bearing the wreath and crest badge. If you’re looking for an environmentally conscious ride capable of turning heads wherever it goes, look no farther than the 2014 Cadillac ELR.” —Joe Tralongo, AutoTrader.com
HONDA ACCORD HYBRID “The 50 mpg clam for the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is more than just marketing hype. It is real. In fact, the Honda is actually capable of achieving considerably higher mileage—in real world driving conditions. The Accord Hybrid is reasonably priced, exceptionally comfortable, and highly economical, delivering an estimated $6,000 savings in fuel costs over a five-year period. All of this makes the Honda a real no-brainer.” —Arv Voss, Auto Impressions

URBAN TRUCK OF THE YEAR CHEVROLET SILVERADO “The new Chevrolet Silverado’s exterior lines are cleaner and squarer, and set off by just the right amount of tasteful bling. An absolutely beautiful truck, the Silverado’s also undergone a host of structural upgrades, making it even more robust. Further, it can be fitted with three engines, including a new, remarkably efficient 4.3-liter V6 with 285 horses.” —Mary Chapman, Freelance Automotive Reviewer
HYUNDAI SANTA FE “Value for the money has long been a hallmark of Hyundai’s offerings. Now its cars are good looking too. This new Santa Fe gives Hyundai a strong offering in the family car segment, while demonstrating the company’s mojo is getting stronger with each new model.” —Camilo Alfaro, AutoProyecto.com
LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT “The 2014 Range Rover Sport is the best blend of entertaining on-road handling and off-road performance yet. It does just what a sport SUV should do; crawl through the most hostile terrain with ease, and once back on the road, drive small and confident, with plenty of urge from the supercharged V8.” —Christopher L. With this all-new version of the car, the name Chevrolet Impala really means something again.” —Frank Washington, AboutThatCar.com
MERCEDES-BENZ CLA “The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class sedan lowers the price of a Mercedes towards a new demographic. But this is more than just an affordable Mercedes-Benz. It’s the real thing. Pairing a plenty stout engine with good handling this Mercedes-Benz will continue to bring a whole new crop of buyers to the fold long after current Mercedes customers have turned to dust.” —Mark Elias, Leftlane News
TOYOTA COROLLA "This is the most radical redesign the Toyota Corolla has seen in over a decade. The styling is more aggressive and uncharacteristically more fluid than its predecessor. It’s a far cry from the previous Corolla’s bland and stodgy appearance. Inside, there's a higher quality of materials and enhanced interior styling—giving the Corolla a more upscale look and feel overall." —Yolanda Vazquez, Motorweekd D

2014newcar buyer'sguide Compiled by Christopher Jackson
s we swing into 2014, it becomes clearer than ever we're living in a golden age of automobiles—or, at least, what will someday be regarded as one. Sure, cars are viewed as appliances, rather than luxury items by some people, and there are far too many of them. But a great percentage of today's cars have been lovingly designed and are built with an eye toward quality and longevity that was unheard of sixty, forty or even twenty years ago. And, they just keep getting better. Here are some of the cars and trucks you'll reminisce about at car shows in 2064.
2014 New Truck Guide tACURA MDX: Acura's biggest crossover benefits from cleaner styling and continues to be a high-tech benchmark in its class. The MDX is lighter and quieter, in spite of its longer wheelbase. It's powered by a new directinjection 3.5 liter V6 that produces 290 horsepower and still returns decent fuel economy.
BMW X5: u Didn't notice the BMW X5 got a redesign? Don't feel bad. The updated sports-activity vehicle soldiers forth with very subtle design changes. The toothier grille is wider, flanking adaptive headlamps, and BMW offers a wider range of interior-design packages. The all-new X5 is completed by a new diesel powerplant with improved horsepower.

2014 New Truck Guide
t CHEVY SILVERADO/GMC SIERRA: General Motors' new full-size pickups are treated to an evolutionary makeover for 2014. Updated engines and new premium models are the highlights. Interior comfort has also been improved. Chevy's even trumped Ford's fancy tailgate ladder with a much simpler cutout bumper step. The trucks are still fighting criticism they're not distinct enough, however.
CHEVROLET COLORADO: u There's a redesigned Chevrolet Colorado on the way, though Chevy's been mum about the details of its midsize pickup. It will be the only domestic option in its segment, as Ford and Ram have abandoned it with no apparent intention of returning. Expect the new Colorado to have more in common with its overseas counterpart than previously..
t DODGE DURANGO: Dodge has upgraded the Durango; currently the largest vehicle in its stable, with smoother styling, improved interior appointments and a new eight-speed automatic transmission shared with the Jeep Cherokee. The Durango retains its seven-passenger capability and 7400-pound towing capacity.
FORD TREMOR: u The Tremor breaks new ground by being the first hot-rod pickup truck to break from the big-V8 mold set forth by muscle cars. Powered by Ford's hot 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, the Tremor is no slouch, with 365 horsepower on tap and a muscle car-like 4.10 rear axle.
t FORD TRANSIT: The Ford E-Series van is being put out to pasture after almost fifty years of service, the victim of platform-reduction measures at Ford. Van buyers won't mourn it for long because the Transit is more efficient thanks to a choice of gasoline and diesel V6 engines. It also drives better thanks to a more modern suspension, and is much more versatile. With two wheelbase choices, three body-height choices and chassis-cab models, it's almost as configurable as the F-150.

2014 New Truck Guide t FORD TRANSIT CONNECT: The second-generation Transit Connect looks a little more like a micro-minivan than a snail, and it's gained cargo capacity--the payload is up to 1600 pounds--and convenience, in the form of SYNC, a rearview camera and an available navigation system. 1.6 and 2.5 liter four-cylinder engines are offered, providing good fuel economy. There's also an official passenger version, which neatly expands the options for families looking for transportation that won't break the bank at the gas pump.
JEEP CHEROKEE: u The resurrected Jeep Cherokee has gotten a lot of attention for its uncompromising styling, which blends traditional Jeep hallmarks with an ultra-modern, rounded silhouette. A choice of four-cylinder or V6 power is offered: the high-efficiency 2.4 liter MultiAir four-cylinder provides a range of almost 500 miles and 31mpg on the freeway, while the new 3.2 liter V6 produces 271 horsepower and 239 poundfeet of torque for real off-road ability. The Cherokee should live up to its Jeep heritage with the "Trail Rated" Trailhawk version.
t JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE AND GRAND CHEROKEE SRT-8: The Grand Cherokee has been redesigned, and it's evolved into the perfect combination of luxury and off-road ability. The conservative restyling hides a new eight-speed automatic transmission and the return of the diesel V6 engine that combines impressive fuel economy and stump-pulling torque. The Grand Cherokee is more refined as well, with new interior appointments. The track-attacking Grand Cherokee SRT8 has stepped up to the next level as well, with more distinct styling 0-60 times down to 4.8 seconds.
LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT: u You might have seen this speedy SUV racing a classic Spitfire fighter and charging up Pike's Peak. If those hints were too subtle, this is the reason: Land Rover's hot-rod version has been updated for 2014, with all-new styling and improved performance. The new Range Rover Sport has shed almost a thousand pounds in some versions, which makes the 500 horsepower available from its supercharged V8 go a very long way indeed.
t MERCEDES SPRINTER: The Sprinter has had the mega-van market more or less to itself for almost ten years now, but things are about to get exciting in a big hurry. Both Ford and Ram have Euro-sourced challengers on the way, so Mercedes is stepping up the Sprinter's game with a new 2.1 liter four-cylinder diesel engine and a seven-speed transmission. Both provide improved fuel economy, while the current V6 diesel continues as an option. Improved interior materials make the Sprinter a richer and more comfortable ride.

2014 New Truck Guide t MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER: Mitsubishi might be financially on the ropes, but the all-new Outlander suggests the brand's not ready to pull the plug just yet. One of the only compact SUVs to offer seven-passenger seating, the new Outlander gets a much richer interior, high-tech options like Forward Collision Mitigation and adaptive cruise control, and new transmissions to boost fuel economy into the low thirties.
PORSCHE MACAN: u Porsche is putting the final touches on a mid-size SUV that will join the Cayenne in the premium crossover market. Details will be available later this year, but the Macan is based on the Audi Q5 and is expected to offer conventional and hybrid-electric variants.
t RAM 1500 DIESEL: Ram has beaten Ford and Chevrolet to the punch as the first to install a diesel engine in a light-duty pickup truck. (Yes, we know Chevrolet made a diesel LUV in the 1970s, but we're not talking history right now) The Ram 1500 diesel's equipped with Ram's new 3.0 liter EcoDiesel V6 that tops 25mpg on the freeway, as well as towing up to 9200 pounds. The Ram pickup continues to offer the brand's signature big-rig styling and extremely comfortable suspension.
RAM PROMASTER: u Like the Ford E-Series, the antiquated Dodge Van is no longer in the picture. In its place, there's the massive Ram ProMaster, which offers the same cavernous cargo capacity and modernized driving experience as the Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter--but with the added twist of front-wheel drive. Like the Transit and Sprinter, it's designed to be customized, and is available with a big 3.0 liter four-cylinder diesel engine and Chrysler's 280-horse 3.6 liter V6. Maximum payload is over 5000 pounds.
t TOYOTA 4RUNNER: The 4Runner gets tougher with its recent makeover, or at least tougher-looking. Toyota's tweaked the front fascia and upgraded the interior. The new 4Runner doesn't lose any of its off-road capability, though; thanks to a 270-horsepower V6 and a Trail trim level combining all of the best off-road gear into a single package. The 4Runner's available with the Entune multimedia system as well.

2014 New Truck Guide t TOYOTA HIGHLANDER: As the 4Runner has gotten tougher, the Highlander has become more carlike. The third-generation Highlander arrives for 2014, and it's sleeker and much more of a tall wagon than a truck. The smooth design is wrapped around a choice of four-, six-cylinder and hybrid powertrains and all-wheel drive. A new double-wishbone rear suspension and electronic power steering improve handling significantly. The Entune multimedia system and a rear-seat entertainment system provide premium-grade appointments.
TOYOTA TUNDRA: u Bigger and bolder, the updated Tundra has bulked up significantly. The design has lost its soft edges, and Toyota's swinging for the fences with a choice of 270-horse V6, 310- or 380-horsepower V8 models and the new high-luxury 1794 Edition, which is aimed directly at the Ford King Ranch and Chevrolet Silverado High Country premium pickups. There may not be a heavy-duty Tundra, but the "light duty" model can tow up to 10,400 pounds.
2014 New Car Guide t ACURA ILX: The Honda Civic's extreme makeover in 2013 improved the car dramatically, but it dimmed the fire of its cousin the ILX a bit. To rectify that, Acura's upgraded the ILX for 2014, with new seventeen-inch wheels, improved leather and a sound system with a subwoofer and active noise cancellation. Additional standard equipment includes a multi-angle rear-view camera and heated front seats. The ILX' three-engine powertrain lineup (150-horse 2.0 liter, 201-horse 2.4 liter and hybrid models) remains unchanged.
ACURA RLX: u Acura's new flagship sedan is a subtle luxury car for technophiles. The modern styling is less extravagant than that of some of the competitors, but once inside you're treated to the finest materials, as well as the slick tech that Acura's known for, including the Aha cloud-based infotainment system, real-time traffic information and a full complement of automatic driver aids. The RLX has a bigger rear seat thanks to a stretched wheelbase, and is available with four-wheel steering and LED headlights. Power's provided by a delightful 310-horsepower direct-injection V6 that returns up to 31mpg on the freeway.
t ALFA ROMEO 4C: Alfa Romeo's impending return to U.S. soil has enthusiasts salivating. The 4C ensures the Italian marque will come back in style, too. Gorgeous curves are wrapped around an athletic carbon-fiber monocoque containing a 240-horsepower mid-mounted turbocharged four-cylinder engine under its lightweight plastic skin. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission churns the power to the rear wheels. This "compact supercar" is aimed at the Porsche Cayman and Chevrolet Corvette.

2014 New Car Guide t ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE/VOLANTE: The gentlemanly speedsters from Aston Martin have made some shufflings at the top. The Vanquish lineup has shuffled the top literally, in fact, with the introduction of the Vanquish Volante convertible. The 6.0 liter V12's 565 horsepower and 183-mph top speed have not changed. Aston has also kept the windshield and trunk full-size, to maintain the Volante's usefulness as a grand tourer. On the performance front, the V12 Vantage S receives a horsepower bump, to 565, and the engine management system's been recalibrated for maximum speed, pushing terminal velocity to 205mph. The V12 Vantage S borrows liberally from Aston's racing parts bin, collecting a six-speed Sportshift III AMT transmission, an exhaust system and lightweight engine internals.
AUDI RS7: u Audi's answer to the BMW M6 Gran Coupe is both powerful--with 560 horsepower under the hood and all-wheel drive--and gorgeous. The A7's sleek envelope body is combined with a twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8, uprated lightweight suspension, an adaptive rear spoiler and restyled front fascia to create a visually and viscerally stunning four-door coupe that's visually and viscerally stunning. Audi claims a 3.7-second 0-60 run.
t BMW i3: The blue and white propeller badge and familiar twin-kidney grille now grace a fully-electric premium compact. The i3 shouldn't disappoint fans of the brand. With an ultra-light carbon fiber body structure and aluminum body panels, the i3 is able to make the most of its 170 horsepower. The lithium-ion battery pack weighs 450 pounds and is mounted low, to preserve handling. Top speed is 93mph, and all of the i3's 184 pound-feet of torque are available from the first touch of the pedal. For extra-urban applications, a range-extending gasoline engine can be added to charge the batteries. The short i3 is designed for city driving, and offers an 80-100 mile range.
BMW 4-SERIES: u It's a new nameplate, but a familiar vehicle. BMW's changing up its naming scheme a bit, so the car formerly known as the 3-Series Coupe is now the 4-Series. It's all-new for 2014 as well, with a sleeker, more refined look and a lighter body. The 3.0-liter straight six is now the top-level engine, accompanied by a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive is also available.
t CADILLAC ELR: Cadillac's much-anticipated range-extended electric sports coupe may have Chevrolet Volt parts at its core, but it's likely to become the brand's technological flagship when it hits the streets. Styled with influence from the Converj concept, the ELR is a handsome 2+2 wrapped around a T-shaped lithiumion battery pack powering an electric motor that puts out 295 pound-feet of torque. It's got a range of 35 miles on full-electric power, and over 300 miles with the 1.4-liter gasoline engine that's on board to charge the battery.

2014 New Car Guide t CADILLAC CTS: The CTS, pushed upmarket by the compact ATS and the departure of the STS, gets a longer, lower body and a more sophisticated look. The performance of the standard 321-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 is enhanced by a new eight-speed automatic transmission and a lower curb weight. Magnetic Ride Control offers real-time active shock adjustment. Cadillac's new 420-horse twin-turbo V6 engine is available in the CTS VSport, which also gets Brembo brakes, a heavy-duty cooling system and a faster steering ratio.
CHEVROLET CORVETTE STINGRAY: u The next-generation Corvette is going after the exotic cars in a big way, with sleek yet distinctively American styling inside and out, a new lightweight aluminum frame and a serious boost in the engine department. The new Corvette Stingray resurrects a classic nameplate and rolls out the door with a 455 horsepower 6.2 liter V8 that returns a shocking 29mpg on the freeway. A carbon-fiber hood and roof panel help keep the center of gravity low and the new Stingray nimble, while the handcrafted interior ensures the ride is as comfortable as it is breathtaking.
t CHEVROLET CRUZE DIESEL: The Chevrolet Cruze becomes one of the first cars in its class to switch to diesel power as Chevy brings the 2.0-liter turbodiesel over from Europe to boost fuel economy. It works too; the already-impressive Cruze returns 46mpg on the freeway with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 151-horse turbodiesel's 264 pound-feet of torque deliver respectable performance, and a 717-mile range only reinforces the Cruze’s comfortable commuter status.
CHEVROLET SS: u Joining forces with the Camaro, Chevrolet's new SS brings the Bowtie brand's A-game to the four-door muscle car market. Chevy's first rear-drive sedan since the Impala left us in 1996 is not related to the current Impala—it's now riding on its own chassis. The SS brings a 415-horsepower LS3 V8 and a six-speed automatic transmission to the table. It's good for five-second 0-60 runs. Standard Brembo front brakes and a fully independent suspension ensure that the SS can harness all of that power in a satisfying fashion.
t FIAT 500L: The cute and stylish Italian subcompact's lineup is expanded for 2014 with the arrival of the larger, four-door 500L. This chunky, city-friendly five-door features a spacious "loft" style interior and a an attractive starting price. It's powered by the economical 1.4 liter MultiAir Turbo engine that produces 160 horsepower and returns 33mpg on the freeway. Over two feet longer than the 500 coupe, the 500L seats five comfortably inside its cab-forward body. The experience is brightened considerably by panoramic glass.

2014 New Car Guide t INFINITI Q50: The first new vehicle to debut under Infiniti's new naming scheme, the Q50 replaces the G37. It's such a comprehensive upgrade, however, that Infiniti plans to sell the two cars side by side for a year or so. The Q50 is available with a 3.7-liter V6 or a 3.5-liter hybrid powertrain, and will likely take over the role of technobarge in its class. Infiniti's debuting Direct Adaptive Steering, Active Lane Control and a predictive forward collision warning system, as well as the InTuition system, which links numerous vehicle functions and settings to the smart key. Infiniti’s InTouch infotainment system offers dual touchscreens and custom apps. All of this is wrapped up in gorgeous new sheet metal, besides.
JAGUAR F-TYPE: u The F-Type is a return to Jaguar's sports-car roots, with a stripped-down, lightweight body, svelte curves, a snarling supercharged engine and a hankerin' for Porsche 911s to chase. The front-engine, reardrive F-Type borrows a wide range of styling cues from classic Jaguars and combines them into a single, handsome roadster. A choice of supercharged, direct-injection engines includes a 3.0 liter V6 and a roaring 495-horse 5.0 V8. The F-Type is equal parts sublime and brash, and it's definitely the hottest Jag to come along in years.
t KIA CADENZA: Kia's first foray into the large family sedan segment is more luxurious than you'd think, featuring a large, well-built interior wrapped around the highest level of technology in any Kia ever sold. Sophisticated sound deadening compliments standard equipment like a smooth 3.3-liter V6, dual zone climate control, and a reverse camera. Options like a panoramic sunroof, blind spot detection and Kia's UVO cloud-based infotainment system make the Cadenza very much worth its mid-thirties starting price.
KIA FORTE FAMILY: u There have been some major changes and updates in Kia's lineup, and the Forte family of subcompacts is all-new. More refined and sporting upscale styling and more value for the dollar, the new Forte, Forte Koup and Forte5 have moved into a position to rival the leaders of the subcompact class-namely, Toyota and Honda. The Forte lineup is available with a choice of 146 and 173-horsepower four-cylinder engines, an available driver-selectable steering profile system, automatic climate control and a pushbutton start. The Koup and Forte5 now have styling that's distinct from the sedan, giving the lineup a stronger identity.
t KIA SOUL: Kia hasn't neglected the "soul" of its subcompact lineup, as the boxy, quirky Soul has graduated from its antiquated platform to a new chassis. The styling follows the same theme as before, but the new stiffer structure offers better handling. Direct-injection engines are new, as are the available navigation system, HID headlamps and UVO eServices infotainment system.

2014 New Car Guide t LEXUS IS: The all-but-forgotten Lexus IS sports sedan gets a major dose of attitude for 2014, with a redesign that adds a distinctive new face and improved handling. A choice of 2.5 liter, 204 horsepower V6 and 3.5 liter, 306 horsepower engines is available. Lexus' distinctive "spindle” grille is here in its most extreme iteration yet, and Lexus has upped the sport component with more aggressive tuning and available F-Sport packages. Inside, the multimedia interface has been updated as well.
MASERATI GHIBLI: u Maserati's attempt to break into larger markets bears the name of a classic sports coupe, but it's got four doors. Then again, this historical disparity doesn't seem to have hurt the Dodge Charger much, so maybe the Ghibli, which looks like a smaller Quattroporte, has a chance. With a choice of V6 or V8 power under the hood and hardware shared with the Quattroporte, it's apt to provide an entertaining drive and an interesting counterpoint to the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class.
t MASERATI QUATTROPORTE: Maserati's flagship luxury sports sedan enters its second generation for 2014. The styling is familiar, but the Quattroporte's better equipped to meet cars like the Jaguar XJ and Porsche Panamera with a choice of V6 or V8 power. The top-level 530-horsepower's twin-turbo V8 drives power to all four wheels and features an eight-speed transmission. Styling has gotten an evolutionary change, while a handcrafted interior features a touch-screen infotainment system, Wi-Fi and a Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
MAZDA3: u Fresh off of a high-profile redesign of the Mazda6, Mazda's updated its subcompact sedan in a similar style. The now ten-year old Mazda3 follows the same spirit as it always has, but adds improved safety to the mix. Mazda's SKYACTIV powertrains have already blessed the Mazda3 with good fuel economy. The new lane departure warning system, forward obstruction detection, radar-based adaptive cruise control and obstacle-detecting city braking systems add a new dimension to the Mazda3.
t MERCEDES CLA: Mercedes' foray into four-cylinder power in a smaller car is a bold move, since the luxury market has traditionally not done well with smaller cars. Between the growth of the premium compact market and the impressive looks and performance of the CLA, however, buyers are likely to be swayed. The CLA shares many of the high-tech driver aids found in the larger E-Class sedans, while returning entertaining performance from its 208-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

2014 New Car Guide t MERCEDES S-CLASS: There's far too much going on with the new Mercedes S-Class to sum up in fifty words or less, but we'll do our best. New gasoline, diesel and hybrid powertrains, Maybach-like luxury, enough driver aids that it's practically autonomous on the freeway, stunning interior design and even an interior cologne dispenser that tweaks the olfactory mood inside of the S-Class are what makes Mercedes' flagship sedan the next standard of the industry.
MITSUBISHI MIRAGE: u The Mirage is a much-needed injection of new product for Mitsubishi's moribund North American lineup. Bouncing into the entry-level class, the Mirage offers a frugal 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine that returns up to 40mpg on the freeway, a continuously-variable transmission and a decent level of standard equipment. Electronic power steering, a navigation system and a pushbutton start are available.
t NISSAN VERSA NOTE: The second generation of Nissan's micro-compact is more refined but still offers 40mpg on the freeway and high feature content for the money. The styling has been smoothed, as has response from the continuously variable transmission. The five-door Versa Note provides ample cargo room and surprising rear-seat legroom. Hands-free text messaging, a navigation system, backup camera and other infotainment amenities are available. The Versa Note can also be had with Nissan's Around View Monitor 360-degree camera system.
PORSCHE 918 SPYDER: u Looking for overwhelming power in your supercar? The 918 Spyder's got exotic looks, real racetrack development resulting in a carbon fiber monocoque, and 900 horsepower. Looking for an environmentally responsible supercar? Porsche's got you covered there as well, with the 918 Spyder's four-mode hybrid-electric propulsion system. Based around a powerful 4.6 liter V8, the system offers economical and track modes. Add in race-inspired styling and high-tech goodies like four-wheel steering and active aerodynamics and Porsche's got the makings of a new legend.
t PORSCHE CAYMAN: Like last year's Boxster redo, the redesigned Cayman features conservative styling changes with major engineering upgrades underneath. The new car is lighter, with a longer wheelbase and an all-new chassis. Porsche's PDK dual-clutch transmission is available, and returns up to 32mpg.An adaptive cruise control system is also new. Porschephiles will of course be more interested in the 275 to 325 horsepower being put to the rear wheels.

2014 New Car Guide
t ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH: One of our personal favorites, the Wraith is the first Rolls-Royce to hit the streets with performance in mind. 624bhp is nothing to sneeze at, certainly, but the Wraith supports its powerful V12 and 4.4-second 0-60 time with a suspension that's tuned to reduce body roll and improve control without sacrificing Rolls-Royce's signature magic-carpet ride. The available Starlight Headliner augments the dramatic fastback styling.
SCION tC: u Now that Scion's got a serious performance car in the form of the FR-S, the tC coupe's got a bit more to live up to. Scion has beefed up the tC's attitude with more aggressive styling. Performance has also been addressed, with a sportier-shifting six-speed automatic transmission connected to the 179-horse four-cylinder engine. The suspension has been tightened as well. Inside, upgraded materials keep the tC current.
t TOYOTA COROLLA: For 2014, the dramatically outdated Corolla has been given the update it needed to catch up with the hotly competitive subcompact market. Evolutionary powertrain upgrades push the fuel economy toward the 40s, while better exterior proportions and a handsome, upscale new interior design give the Corolla a much-needed dose of curb presence and personality. The handling is crisper and more responsive without losing the commuter-comfort that Toyota's customers expect.
VOLVO V60: u Volvo's been mostly quiet for a year or two, but the new V60 is the first evidence the company has been marshaling its forces rather than fading away. Dramatic new styling takes gives the V60 show-car looks; while under the skin it features an innovative new seat configuration system. Expect Volvo's new family of efficient four-cylinder engines to debut on the V60 as well. dD

2013Chrysler300C WRITTEN BY LYNDON CONRAD BELL
JOHN VARVATOS LIMITED EDITION
A CAR BOTH FEARED AND RESPECTED There’s something intriguing about our long term 300C Varvatos Chrysler. First of all, rolling along in traffic in it, you feel, for want of a better word, “Gangsta”. Further, the very look of the car causes other drivers to get out of its way. Sinister, yet tasteful, it’s like encountering a thug dressed in a $6000 Kiton suit. The black on black color scheme with Satin Titanium “lowlights” commands respect, admiration, and yes, concern. There’s no other way to say WRITTEN BY LYNDON CONRAD BELL it—the car is both handsome and intimidating. I’m reminded of a gangster movie in which the protagonist was asked, “Would you rather be feared or respected?” Such is the heavy infusion of attitude bestowed upon the 300C by noted fashion designer John Varvatos (a Detroit native BTW). The Chrysler’s color scheme is taken from the black and Satin Titanium John Varvatos cologne bottle. Everything usually finished in chrome on the standard Chrysler 300C glows subtly in Satin Titanium on the Varvatos Chrysler. Lest you think this produces a combination bereft of highlights, Chrysler’s Phantom Black tri-coat pearlescent paint literally sparkles in the sunlight—adding highlights to the 300C where they would otherwise not reside. The overall effect is intensely distinctive. This Varvatos 300C also has the goods to back up the look. Chrysler’s 5.7-liter V8 is installed, pounding out 363 horsepower and 394 ft-lbs of torque for the fearsome part. However, the engine is also equipped with

Chrysler’s fuel saver multi-displacement system—so even with all of that power, the EPA estimates it to be capable of returning 19 miles per gallon combined. Further, it runs on regular unleaded, with no loss of output. The lovely and relatively light-footed Mrs. L.I.R. Bell is averaging some 20 miles per gallon in it—so the estimates are pretty accurate. And there’s your respectable. The 300C is Chrysler’s flagship, so luxury features abound. Keyless entry and start, a 525-watt Beats by Dr. Dre audio system, heated and ventilated power-adjustable seats, adaptive bi-xenon headlights with automatic hi-beam control, 20-inch Satin Titanium wheels, and a dual pane panoramic sunroof are but a few of the treasures fitted to our 2013 Chrysler 300C John Varvatos Limited Edition long term test car, justifying its as tested price of $52,820.
