“Taking time to do nothing usually brings everything into perspective.” —Doe Santamata

FROM THE

publisher

I made time actually to call, not text, my son in Austin TX. and a few close friends, to chat, but of course, no one answered, they were all too busy! I posted a picture of my horrible day, and where I was stranded on Facebook, no one felt sorry for me! Apparently, the very meaning of Leelanau in Indian means "delight of life." I found humor in the irony that I was there specifically to write about why it's a little slice of heaven because of the breathtaking view. But I never seem to slow down enough to fully appreciate it. I think I do, but not really. I get too caught up in being too bloody busy. So my goal is to jump into summer and enjoy every second I can with my 9-year-old daughter Teaghan and once again remind myself what a paradise we live in. I need to rock some sandy toes, Petoskey stone hunt, hike, swim, pick cherries, eat Cherry Republic Boomchunka cookies, Moomer’s ice cream, and Grand Traverse Pie too. Not forgetting, some local wine drinking! Teags and I taking in the awe of Sleeping Bear Dunes

A

funny thing happened to me a few weeks ago. As always, I was rushing here and rushing there and way over scheduled. I had to be at a photo shoot, and interview in Omena in Leelanau County at 9 am. I usually never make appointments so early, because I know myself too well. But David Waskiewicz, the owner of Knot, just a bar, had said it was a good time to catch him, and I know his busy season was ready to kick into gear. To make a long story short, we meet, and as I bid my farewells, I suddenly realize my car keys were in the camera bag that my son Zach had left for TC with 30 minutes before. Mad Panic, sets in I am stuck in Omena. I am left stranded at Omena Bay, facing the dock over calm tropical aqua blue water, there isn’t a soul around, and the sun is shining, not a cloud in the sky and it's 80 degrees. Wait a minute; this is a Crazy Good thing! It's got to be divine intervention, telling me to slow down and take in the beauty around me, enjoy the stillness and savor the precious stolen moment. Isn't there a song even written about it? "Sittin' on the dock of the bay, wastin' time," I did, for two whole uninterrupted heavenly hours! Luckily or unluckily, I still had my phone so that I could cry for help. I did of course at first, but once I had accepted it would be a while, I finally relaxed and took it all in. Hallelujah!

In the pages ahead, we focused on this theme, asking a few natives to share their favorite summer spot with us. Low and behold they all chose their very own waterfront backyards. We took inspiration from the water to share a few more of Jim Anderson's excellent aerial photography. And, the spectacular home we feature is owned by a couple who have raised their family vacationing up north for the last twenty years. They finally took the plunge to make the beautiful Bay Harbor their forever home. So I’ll see you around M22, or on the water, as we summer at Camp Gorsline. A fun quote on Pinterest says; “The secret to being Happy is accepting where you are in life and making the most out of it every day. " I'd say embracing an epic Summer, loving, living, working and playing in northern Michigan is the real secret to being happy. What a life we get to live, every day.

THIS IS OUR HAPPY PLACE We asked a few Traverse City natives where their favorite summer hot spots are located. After much thought their waterfront back yards were the greatest place to be. Here’s to Living the Northern Dream.

Don’t wait for and opportunity, create it.

Small is the New Big If you ever watch HGTV, you may have already seen the Tiny House Hunters show. Brave souls are downsizing clutter and excess and making life simple and uncomplicated. Searching for the perfect tiny prefab home to fill their needs. It's a huge trend, and it's reached hip Traverse City. A Tiny “Roost” House is taking center stage on 8th St. Architect Michael Fitzhugh and Los Angeles designer and director Geoffrey Nelson, a Charlevoix native, have leased the corner lot through September 30th to host

the "Roost Concept Experience Showcase." A peek inside to see what all the hype is about. These prefabbed homes are incredibly unique and cost effective starting at 370 Square feet. With many Americans going away from the concept that bigger is better Roost has already been the talk of the town with attention from locals considering the challenge to downsize. So the next time your cruising by 8th street pop in and check it out. Ask yourself the question, could you live tiny?

Pinterest Paradise If you are a self-proclaimed crafter, armed with a glue gun and Pinterest is your creative inspiration, a Hobby Lobby coming to town, at The Buffalo Ridge Center, would be BIG NEWS. With the recent opening of Lucky’s Market and the previous addition of the IMAX theater, the retail outlet is busier than ever. However, with the vacant strip mall beside Party Giant set to be torn down, there is room for more business and opportunity. Pending approval from the Garfield Township the space left after the demolition would be turned into a massive 55,000 square foot Hobby Lobby Store. Crafters Rejoice! With the closest Hobby Lobby in Petoskey and Gaylord, it would be a welcome addition. Nothing is yet set in stone though as many concerns such as overlap with the Lucky’s parking lot and an increase in traffic that would need to be evaluated before the project can be approved. If approved the Hobby Lobby could open as early as 2018.

The best wines are the ones we drink with friends

New Blue If you've been around Traverse City a long time, odds are you've shopped at The Blue Goat Wine Shop more than a time or two, popping in, picking up a bottle of wine on the run. It has been a Traverse City staple since 1974, housed in a building from the 1880’s. The tradition can continue but thanks to a trio of new owners is has been revitalized. Amanda Danielson, Sebastian Garbsch, and Linda Price have teamed up to launch Blue Goat Wine & Provisions. Focusing on customer service, it offers a unique selection of wine to appeal to everyone's different tastes. That's not all though, in addition to wine they offer beer, cider, grab and go food items and much more such as membership programs, wine tastings, and special events. With a fresh approach to a long-standing staple of our community, it'll be exciting to see their success.

Bodacious Brunch Brunch will never be the same! Bourbons 72 have reinvented it. “If we were going to do this I wanted to do something exceptional,” Says Richard Hamper, Food and Beverage Director. It's the ultimate experience in quality and mouthwatering flavor and heavenly for your taste buds. The concept is unique, after choosing your main course from a decadent list of original creations. Ever had Surf and Turf for breakfast? Well cross it off your bucket list and enjoy their Tenderloin and Crab Benedict with Maryland Crab and Red Alaskan King Crab Cakes. A trip to the appetizer bar is next. An array of Tenderloin and Crab Benedict impeccable displays of food fit for a queen. In-house baked pastries, with croissants that you would swear, came from Paris itself. Exclusive cheeses from all around the globe and more. Pace yourself though there are still a few more courses to go. There is no hurry, Mimosa's and Bloody Mary's are just $5 to linger longer. Last but certainly not least indulge in dessert. With Crème Brule and a variety of different sweet, savory concoctions you're sure to leave with a full belly and a smile on your face. 24

Owner Jennifer Mackey welcomes you inside

Taproot Cider House Tap into the vibrant essence of Taproot Cider House, where there is a whole lot more than just cider. To steal a quote, they are at the corner of Happy and Healthy. A happening place on the corner of Front St. that’s vibrant and organic. Its ambiance mirrors The Garden of Eden; a real tree graces the bar and roots from apple trees entwine the ceiling. Enriching the experience are the choices to ponder, causing a temptation overload. Chug on some hard cider, or let expert mixologist Ben wow you with his craft cocktails. Live music enhances the mood, and then there is the food! A true testament that organic goodness can be out of this world delicious. It’s all the brainchild of owner Jennifer Mackey. When she started Taproot in late January of 2016, she brought her passion for the environment and healthy organic food to life. Everything in Taproot is made from scratch using only the best organic and GMO-free ingredients from local farmers. Their menu is diverse with great pork and chicken dishes for meat lovers and a signature mouthwatering Black Bean Burger for vegetarians. If you’re just grazing their Fire Roasted Sausage N Cider or Taproot Nachos are a must try. Since day one people have been raving about Taproot, it’s popularity grows by the day, just like the roots its named after.

Summer is here in full swing, and when the thermometer goes up our palates tend to go to some light and bright wines for the summer heat. With so many wines to choose from, Rose’s are certainly one of the summer wine hits. However, many are still unsure if they are buying that “sweet pink wine” from the 80’s? Most certainly not! Classic rose from regions such as Provence France, are dry, light and super refreshing. With the growing popularity of rose, there is no shortage of options available from nearly every wine growing region on the planet. This opens the door for some dramatic style differences ranging from very light in color, with bright acidity on the finish to a more robust style with deeper color and a more intense red berry fruit. Locally in Northern Michigan, there are an abundance of Rose’s to choose from as well. One that I enjoyed recently was Bonobo’s Rose of Pinot Gris. This wine is a bit unusual in that it is not made from one of the more traditional red wine varietals used for rose, but yet a grape used to make white wine. Made primarily out of Pinot Gris grapes, this Rosé shows delicate aromas of peach, apricots, honey, Nashi pears, and red apples. A delicious wine to enjoy with lighter fare or simply porch sipping. Whatever is good for your soul, do that.

Soothing Salt

Newsflash: Traverse City is now officially on the holistic healing health map with Urban Oasis Salt Spa. This growing trend of Dry salt therapy, or halotherapy, is a holistic, drug-free, natural treatment using micro particles of salt to promote better breathing, healthier skin, sounder sleep, improved physical fitness and endurance, and overall wellness. Who knew Salt had been used therapeutically for nearly all of human history? Carol and David Saxton learned about the secret of salt on a recent trip down South, after experiencing the healing effects firsthand, they wanted to share their discovery. The lofty goal included shipping in fourteen thousand pounds of Himalayan Salt from Pakistan and creating a perfect environment that mimics an actual salt mine. Right down to the perfect temperature. “We are our own testimonials of how much better you feel, it draws out all the toxins, says Carol. Their facility also contains a Dry Salt Sauna and a Massage Room for ultimate therapeutic relaxation. The Adult Salt Room is the main soothing treatment room and also hosts yoga classes. Apparently, the healing works perfectly for kiddo's with allergies too; there's a dedicated playroom just for them. It's a giant sandbox with toys, only its salt; they play for 45 mins oblivious to the healing effects. "We see so much opportunity. We hope to host special groups like Bridal Showers, Couples Nights, Men's Nights and more, says Carol. Urban Oasis Salt Spa 1545 S. Knot Tonight

or picture, perfect waterfront dining the Knot, Just a Bar sister restaurants shine above the rest. One resides on the water’s edge of the charming and sleepy town of Omena. The other sits in the affluent Bay Harbor Marina, overlooking the nautical traveling hustle and bustle. The ambiance that surrounds both locations couldn’t be more different. However, both proudly feature a glistening crystal blue bay view, transforming any occasion here into a mini vacation. At Knot, just a bar, enjoy the moment, sit, relax, reflect, rejuvenate and recharge. The serenity of the front seat water view is our very own northern Michigan getaway.

Knot, Just a Bar Bay Harbor

There is a lot to savor here, time spent on the deck of the Omena, Knot Just a Bar, in Leelanau County, is a tranquil treasure, where life slows down.

Knot, just a bar, is exactly that, they are also casual full-service restaurants locally owned by Dave and Amanda Waskiewicz. Funnily enough, they didn’t start out that way. An out of town Hospitality Company dreamt up the concept. Dave was hired as the general manager when the first Knot opened in Bay Harbor in 2000. After living and working downstate for years, he was longing to return home to northern Michigan. The fact that it was the restaurant business that brought him back home is no surprise. "You have to love being in this business," he laughs. "I started as a busboy and over the years have worked every position there is. It paid for college, twice, once, for a degree in journalism and public relations, and again to earn my masters." After getting the Bay Harbor location up and running, a few years later, the Jacobson family, owners of Leelanau Cellars in Omena contacted Dave with the idea of a second location housed in their building. “It worked out great because I really wanted to be back in Leelanau County,” recalls Dave. When the stars aligned with the opportunity for Dave and his wife to purchase the restaurants, they jumped at the chance. “My wife and I are both restaurant junkies,” laughs Dave They didn’t have to change anything because Dave had already lovingly nurtured the restaurants like they were his own from day one. On the first impression, there is no doubt you’ll have a fun experience. The inside looks like a salty old sailor’s ship down below, with rich wood hues, maritime accents and brass hatches that don the walls. It’s laid back and comfortable with a friendly atmosphere, with a long wooden bar that beckons you to pull

up a stool and stay a while. Looking up you see a myriad of names and personal messages gracing the ceiling. What’s this all about? It's The Beer Club; an honor only bestowed upon those that dare to earn it, fair and square. Claim your fame by achieving to sample each one of the Sixty-Nine Beers on the menu! It's not expected all at once; there are carefully kept files to plot the progress and check them off one by one. What makes it a worthwhile challenge are many of the sixty-nine beers hail from all around the world, including Germany, England, and Ireland, so you experience a little culture too. Knot, Just a Bar, has a tasty and delicious food menu to hungrily ponder over too. The house specialty is the Perch Cone, a twist on the traditional English fare of fish and chips. People travel far and wide just to devour its divine scrumptiousness. We also highly recommend the not to miss Mahi Fish Taco’s, grilled with lettuce, cheese, cilantro, Pico de Gallo, guacamole and citrus aioli. Delicioso! The menu is as delectable as it is diverse, with tempting yummy flavors for every taste bud imaginable. CASTING OFF appetizers include Wings tossed in buffalo, BBQ or sriracha sweet sauce, Chicken or Beef Nachos with house made tortilla chips and a Baked Garlic Shrimp. BIG PLATE options include Parmesan Whitefish and Sirloin Steak dinners. The succulent Burgers can please every picky eater with beef, turkey, veggie and salmon varieties. Sandwiches include Perfect Pastrami, a Monster JULY/AUGUST 2017 BAY LIFE NORTH

There is a Lamb or Chicken Gyro, a Michigander Fish sandwich, a Tuscan Grinder, a Jack Daniels BBQ Pulled Pork and even an Open Faced Hot Brisket Sandwich. Wow, hungry yet? On the lighter side they also have amazing salads, and soups including seafood chowder of course! They do say, variety is the spice of life, and this marvelous menu has it all. There is a lot to savor here, time spent on the deck of the Omena, Knot Just a Bar, in Leelanau County, is a tranquil treasure, where life slows down. Its peaceful surroundings and spectacular water view is truly a little slice of heaven. Even the very word Leelanau (Lee – La – Naw) is the Indian word meaning “Delight of Life.” Heck, make a whole day of it and pop next door to indulge in free wine tastings at Leelanau Cellars. Heading up US 31 North the road trip alone is heavenly, following the flow of the glistening water’s shoreline to your left and rolling hills

to the right. Just before reaching Petoskey sits beautiful Bay Harbor, where the view is as just breathtaking, but a little less on the quiet side. The stunning marina is a coveted spot to dock. It makes for the perfect place to people watch, as the lavish yachts idle by coming in and going out with their adventure seeking captains at the helm. Both Knot, Just a Bar’s, can claim Knot, just mediocre views, Knot, just an ordinary menu, Knot, just a so-so beer list. So whether you dine in Omena or Bay Harbor, you are Knot, going to be disappointed. As two of Dave’s regular customers laugh at their private joke, “Are you going to the bar?” They reply, “Knot tonight!”

Soon and Mckeel Hagerty “While we love Traverse City, blossoming downtown and the Old Mission Peninsula, one of our favorite spots in Northern Michigan is Glen Lake and the Sleeping Bear Dunes. When friends visit from around the world they are blown away. We love to climb the Dunes, take out a wooden boat at our cottage on Glen Lake and we always make a traditional stop to Art’s for beers and burgers. Our visitors often comment “we finally get it.” We live in an amazing place. We also love day trips in our classic cars. There is nothing like driving a car like our 1948 Ford Dunesmobile on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive or around “The County.” And every year we celebrate our anniversary in August with a date night drive in our 1966 Jaguar E-Type to our favorite Italian restaurant, Funistrada. We are avid world travelers, but nothing compares to a great Northern Michigan Summer surrounded by beautiful scenery, incredible foodie restaurants and, of course, the hospitality of our local friends.”

Gone are the days of popcorn textured ceilings, thankfully! However, the emerging trend for ceilings is that they no longer want to be painted, well, ceiling white. In the newest of designs where less clutter and a more monochromatic color palettes are taking center stage, the opportunities for design may lie just above your head. Look to your ceiling or shall we say, your 5th wall?

you look across your room at our beautiful natural surroundings, the color connects the interior to the exterior. Ceiling becomes sky.

Still popular in our area is a traditional beam or coffered ceiling detail to add a contrast in color and/or texture to the room. The spaces between the coffers may be painted the wall color or even a shade darker to add contrast to the trim elements of the coffer. If beams enter the picture, they may be a rustic element meant to warm up a more modern space. Using a true barn wood or distressed wood detail would serve to add some texture. How about adding ship lap just in the center of those beams to create a centered focal point to the room as a whole?

So be adventurous. Look above you in a different light and add some detail to one of the biggest surfaces in your home.

In most spaces I design, if the ceiling is not treated any differently than the surrounding walls, i.e. wall board, why should it be painted a different color. To keep with a simplistic design, simply painting the ceiling the same color as the walls will introduce a more updated look. What about painting the ceiling a soft shade of blue or green? When 50

Oh yes, and wallpaper or faux finish for a Powder Bath ceiling, always a must! Don’t be afraid, go for it! And introduce a special light fixture to make the space unique. Your guests will love the surprise when they go in and close the door.

inda and Alan have been together since high school, and just celebrated forty years of marriage. Their family fell in love with Harbor Springs in the 90’s, owning a condominium in Boyne Highlands coming weekends with their children, skiing and living the Northern Lifestyle. Their home was Grand Rapids, but they always summered here, as the kids got older they transitioned, owning a few other summer cottages. Over time, they became empty nesters, except for their beloved dogs, and after each weekend visit, it became harder to go home. "We finally just decided everything we wanted was right here," laughs Alan. They didn't really have a game plan, "We'll wing it,' laughs Linda. When their house sold quickly, it put a little more pressure on their timeline. Deciding on Bay Harbor, a place they already loved, after owning there previously, but they wanted to build something that was uniquely theirs. As it turned out they found out an enviable waterfront lot may be available, but it was already partially built on, and the owners were backing out. “We were so lucky that we had Roger as our builder because his experience really paid off,” recalls Linda. The original plans and footers were all but scrapped, modifying and molding to fit their needs and wants list.

The house took almost two years to build, and during the construction, Alan and Linda rented a house up on the cliffs of Bay Harbor, it directly overlooked their home and they could watch the progress piece by piece. " It was pretty fun; I could see when things were going on, and when they weren't" laughs Linda. JULY/AUGUST 2017 BAY LIFE NORTH

It didn’t cause any challenges though, they loved their building experience and cannot sing enough wonderful praises for Roger. “This is all him, he works hands on, and he is now a great friend," says Alan. Roger Widing of Widing Custom homes in Traverse City, is a fourth generation builder, and vividly remembers picking up scrap lumber on his dad's job sites at age 6. Building clients dream homes are truly his passion; standing behind every home with a tenyear warranty. Roger personally made sure every precise detail throughout the home was impeccable like it was his own. The ultimate asset was Linda’s experience and expertise, during the entire process. “I knew exactly what I wanted, and Roger and Joni would make it happen,” recalls Linda. Linda also has exquisite taste, all of the homes interior decorating decisions were hers. She wasn’t afraid to take bold risks, with luxurious wallpaper choices, extravagant craftsmanship finishes and upscale wooden elements, like black walnut flooring and an enormous walnut island. "Roger never said it couldn't be done," recalls Linda. The dramatic staircase boasts hand carved white railings and Linda designed the impressive fireplace. “

We wanted an open concept, I love that we have a water view from almost every room in the house,” says Linda.

They originally had envisioned a Master Suite on the 1st floor, but the compromise was installing an elevator. “I’m a planner, and I like things simple and easy,” laughs Alan. They know this is a home to spend their golden years in, and that may include taking the elevator to bed instead of the stairs as the year's progress. "We actually love the elevator, we never realized how handy it is, I put all my groceries in it coming up from the car and garage, and you don't realize how many times you scratch the walls carrying things upstairs, we just throw it in the elevator now." Laughs Linda. Heated floors were also on the list, and they didn't want any exposed drywall, so one of the homes fundamental features is the immaculate, bright white paneling from end to end. It creates a grand, stately interior that Linda gracefully contrasted with color and style with her handpicked refined wallpaper choices. The pièce de résistance of the home is without a doubt the opulent coffered ceiling that graces the living room. The architecture is stupendous, Linda oversaw its conception piece by piece and is still in awe of the finished ornate showpiece. The ceiling perfectly frames the gigantic picture windows that glisten and shine shades of blue as the breathtaking bay demands your attention.

“We can see the ski hills of Boyne Highlands and Nubs from here, and all of Petoskey. At night it lights up and feels like we live in the city,” says Linda.

The Master Bathroom is Pristine Elegance

The wow factors are too many to count; there is a grand piano in a room worthy of any famous musician, complete with a Beatles original framed photo. The commanding kitchen would be the envy of any executive chef, complete with an elegant pantry. The dazzling staircase is at the ready for any special occasion grand entrance. And the superb art laden walls entertain and delight at every turn. Upstairs the splendid view once again summons your attention; a huge archway sits at the top of three glossy wooden stairs leading up to the master bedroom. All you see is blue, and it takes your breath away. "It's just like you're on a ship," laughs Linda. The immense openness is like a vast window to the soul; it’s simply striking. The stark white and delicate baby blue hues of their bedroom create a calming and peaceful ambiance. The name of the color is Silver Cloud. It must be a prerequisite for a restful sleep and, what a view to wake up to every morning?

The master bathroom is magnificent, heated floors and Italian Carrara white marble wall to wall. 60

The pure white is subtly enhanced by soft feminine wallpaper and crystal lighting. Upstairs also houses their adult kid’s rooms, girlie pink and flowers for their daughter and a nautical dark blue for their son. They visit often, and their daughter recently made them grandparents. Downstairs the details were just as important. In Alan’s man cave room, the elements are masculine and fine fish trophies proudly hang from memorable fishing trips. In the hallway Ralph Lauren custom wallpaper lines the walls and barrel back Chris-Craft boat lithographs catch your eye. Even the inside of the garage is painted the same exterior color of the house, so it blends when it’s left open. Everything in their home was classically designed to endure the test of time, timeless and ageless.

With all of the details that Linda and Alan so meticulously anguished over, their finished home is an epic example of good old-fashioned hard work. Kudos, to Alan and Linda to have achieved success and attained goals to come this far in life, to be together for so many years, raise a beautiful family and enjoy a forever dream home. Thank you for sharing it with us.
