Our family is thrilled to be celebrating Five Years of Publishing Baylife Magazine. It’s been a wild ride so far, launching a free magazine that wholeheartedly embodies our lucky Up North lifestyle. We feel our magazine has a heart, sharing with you the inspiring stories of local people. Our neighbors, our extended family, and friends, they’re the doers that make our community so unique. We also pride ourselves on reveling in the raw and dramatic nature around us with spectacular photography that is the constant reminder of why we choose this remarkable place to be our home. Raising our families, retiring, vacationing, and building forever dream homes. Our passion and our joy embody why we love to live here, work here, and play here. We couldn’t be happier Living the Northern Dream with you. We know you read our magazine cover to cover. We feel privileged to grace your coffee table, your guest rooms, and don’t mind you sneaking a few extra’s to send to family to persuade them to move here. We don’t blame you! We are ecstatic also to have a fabulous new website, woo hoo! The big news doesn’t stop there, due to high demand we’re now direct mailing the magazine to the homes on Old Mission Peninsula. It’s been so successful in such a short time we are already looking at other areas too. Duh, I know, what a concept, people were thrilled to have Baylife in their mailbox, shocker! It seems such a simple thing, but it’s a huge leap forward. I can honestly say that both, the website and direct mailing, have already been major gamechangers, but none of this would be possible without our amazing readers. But we were guilty of being set on auto pilot, where we live inside our comfort zone, where it is safe and familiar, not rocking the boat. Once you realize that you can’t grow, you embrace the change. Rock that boat and bring it on, if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. Life is like underwear – change is GOOD. Change is such a staple in nature; it’s why Spring is such a thrill to behold. Everything is gloriously waking up from
Change is the major element of the wonderful people that we feature in our pages this issue too. The first may be a familiar face if you are a self-confessed foodie. Traverse City’s beloved Executive Chef Eric Nittolo has come back to town with a bang. You can find him at the Reflect Bistro, inside Cambria Suites. Yes, I did say inside a hotel. I promise you will be wowed. It’s the hottest restaurant in town, and Tom and I were lucky to spend an incredible evening being wined and dined by him. In the past Chef Eric had a throng of loyal clients in the Traverse City food scene, and then a few years ago, moved away. Life changed, and so did he, the whole experience has changed the way he looks at everything, and lucky for our taste buds and our bank accounts it includes fine dining. He’s even changed the way you’ll drink wine, in a huge sexy glass, sit, sip, swirl, and repeat. I was instantly obsessed. Mike and Melissa Dow also made some tremendous life changes; we introduce you to their family inside their striking Washington Place condo. It sits on the fourth floor overlooking the hustle of downtown and the beautiful bay. The astounding fact is they’ve moved only two blocks from their two daughters childhood home on Washington Street. It’s mind-blowing that two blocks can signify an entirely different world. The Dow’s dramatically downsized from a huge Victorian home on a double lot with constant upkeep to the easy breezy living style of zero honey do lists, grass mowing, leaf mowing or snow blowing. Jealous? I must admit I am; my only solace is they had to give up a lot of excess in the process. Though I’m also in the mode of Spring Cleaning right now, so it still looks majorly enticing. Spring is truly my favorite season here, after the gray days of winter, one sunny day is like a lifetime of therapy. You peel off the layers of winter, feeling lighter, and brighter, ready to take on anything. Oh, and that little thing called Spring Break, packing a suitcase and escaping to a place where the sun shines a lot hotter. A killer beach view, a comfy sun lounger, a tropical cocktail and a Baylife Magazine. Take us with you and send us your Spring Break “wish you were here,” pics and we’ll print them next issue. Cheers

Bringing the House Down The City Opera House celebrated 125 years in grand style, throwing a complimentary Collage Concert to the community with special guest, Grammy award winning, Bob James. Guests enjoyed performances by Old Town Playhouse, NWS-Front Street Writers, TSO Ensemble and many more. We are so lucky to have this downtown gem as a landmark and community gathering place. City Opera House is one of forty-eight opera houses built in Michigan in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Affectionately known as “The Grand Old Lady," this regional treasure had its grand opening gala February 5, 1892. Today only seven of these historic Victorian structures are open statewide.

AHA Moments The Great Lakes Children’s Museum launched their new sold out AHA Gala to rave reviews. Changing up the venue to the top of the Center Pointe building, guests had a ball, literally. Throwing cotton balls into cups to bring on AHA moments of learning and thinking outside the box, in a fun presentation by Joe Sanok. The cuisine was delicious and local wine and beer flowed freely. The silent auctions and live auctions raised much needed funds to support the museums programs. Happy party goers ended the night on the lively dancefloor busting out some major dance moves.

Executive Director Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce This is a brand-new position for you, what goals have you set in place to enhance the chamber experience? To connect on a deeper level with the Chamber membership. I want the experience to be as personal as possible. Expect to see our Staff, Board of Directors, Ambassadors, and Young Professionals each play a part in making that happen. Another key goal is to demonstrate the value of the Chamber to our membership. Who’s your hero? My Grandfather. He found success in life through pure hard work; part of a lost generation. He is a selfless man who leads through his example. Married for more than 64 years, his love and devotion to my Grandmother is still profound. He did more than help raise me, he set the mold for the man I aspire to be. What words of wisdom do you live by? Two of my favorite sayings are: “What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?” and “Good decisions”. The first is from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, an 18th century philosopher. The second is from my Grandfather and was a mandate I heard often in childhood. Are you a TC native? I was born in Ann Arbor, MI. Go Blue! Although I’ve lived in Traverse City most of my life and my heart will always be here. Tell us something that would surprise us about you? I sing and play guitar in a band based in Harbor Springs, MI called “The Drift”. I also collect refrigerator magnets and have an absurdly large collection of them. What is something that your wife, Caitlin, would tell us about you? She would probably tell you that I tend to fixate on home improvement projects that don’t need to get done! Things like replacing all the lights in the house with LED bulbs. I’m a sucker for technology, I’m sorry honey! What is one thing checked off on your bucket list? I always wanted to be a Dad. In 2013 I was able to check that off the bucket list. Our daughter Evelyn is the light of my life and fatherhood has been a more rewarding experience than I could have imagined. 18

Mari Vineyards MEET
F
or those looking for an experience blended between Northern Michigan and Northern Italy, Mari Vineyards on Old Mission Peninsula is a must visit. As you drive out on Center Road and near East Bay, if you look to your left you’ll see a marvelous stone structure seemingly pulled from some Italian countryside, this is Mari Vineyards. Beyond its brilliant appeal, this unique winery has some other surprises for you, a delicious array of Northeast Italy’s wine varietals.
I spoke with Sean O’Keefe, winemaker for Mari Vineyards, to discuss what they have going on and how the 2016 vintage came out. Sean is well known for his love of Riesling, so of course, about 1/3rd of the wineries production is in Riesling. He says the 2016 vintage is showing some unbelievable character and he is excited to see them in the bottle. Besides Riesling, the winery grows several varietals in hoop houses or greenhouses, covering long rows of vines that normally would not grow well here. Varietals such as; Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Shioppettino, all of the Italian heritage, are allowed extra maturing time, thusly allowing Mari Vineyards to produce some truly delicious and unique wines. Sean said that many of these varietals will be blended with other known varietals such as Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, to make a perfect marriage of flavors, while some will stand on their own. One of the reds that will stand alone is the Malvasia Bianco, “Very distinct/floral ruby grapefruit aromas. Not muscat-like at all = no citronella or waxy aromas. The floral, citrusy aroma suggest a sweet wine, but it surprises by being dry, somewhat sauvignon blanc like = light grassy, grapefruit, blood orange”. Personally, I can’t wait for their release. This Spring the wine will be flowing, following a spectacular 2016 growing season, Mari Vineyards will begin releasing wines in late spring. Take a look at what’s to come…

Easy Does It Did you know the next time you have business at the Secretary of State office, that you don’t have to wait for hours in the “take a number and wait process?” Nope, they recently adopted an appointment system. High Standards They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well if you’re looking for great food and great service, look no further. Traverse City’s newest restaurant, the Red Spire Brunch House is turning heads. As you walk in the clean white design with amazing lighting and red décor, beacons you to come inside and stay awhile. With a brunch focus and flair on their breakfast and lunch dishes, your taste buds are sure to be singing for more. Owners Chad Hall and Joshua Anderson together bring more than 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry. “We just felt like it was something we needed to do”, says Chad. After working at the Green House Café for 16 years, Chad and Joshua felt it was time to have something of their own. Chad is also the manager and runs the restaurant, while Chef Joshua cooks up the great cuisine that already has customers raving and coming back for more. “Serving classic fair foods, presented nicely, with good service and consistently good food”, says Chad is their mission. Located in the Village at the Mercado they already have all the locals loving them. So, the next time you’re in the neighborhood stop by and see what all the fuss is about.
Hops and Hopscotch An outdoor beer garden in Traverse City, yeah you heard right. Coming this Spring owners Matt and Mark Davies are livening up the east side with their newest restaurant. Hopscotch Brick Oven and Taproom will have everything from wood fired pizzas to fire pits. Inside the massive 1600 square foot space will feature a brick-fired oven for pizzas, charcuterie, and sandwiches. Complete with a smoker for all their delicious meats including ribs and wings, as well as 16 tap handles for craft beer. That’s a whole lot of brews. It’s the outside however that has people counting down the days till they open. In the landscaped backyard of Hopscotch, they will include two massive eight-foot fireplaces, tables, bourbon barrels, and outdoor games for everyone to enjoy. From sipping bourbon to shooting darts there’s no limit to how much fun you can have. It’s located right next to the tart trail, so after a long ride zip on in and grab a cold one. If beer isn’t your thing have no fear, Hopscotch will boast an extensive whiskey and bourbon list, as well as craft cocktails. secret recipe: CHERRY PORK TENDERLOIN
Ingredients for the Sauce-Cherry Apple Sauce 8 oz’s of Frozen Cherries 1 Jonathan Apple (peeled and diced) 1 Tablespoon of Orange Juice 1 Tablespoon of Lemon Juice 2 Tablespoons of White Sugar 2 Tablespoons of Brown Sugar 1 Cup of Red Wine Procedure: 1. Mix the Shallots, Cherry Juice, ½ Cup of Salad Oil and 1 teaspoon of fresh ground black pepper together to create your marinade. 2. Place your Pork Tenderloin into your Marinade for several hours or overnight if possible. 3. Combine Apples, orange juice, lemon juice, white and brown sugars, and cherries. 4. Sautee until Soft. 5. Add Red Wine and cook till the apples are falling apart. 6. Remove from the heat and puree until smooth.

he old saying “You can ever go home again,” doesn’t ring true for Executive Chef, Eric Nittolo. Three years ago, at the top of his game he decided to move away. Out of sight and out of mind. Coming back up north, he admits being a little more humbled and a little wiser. “I want to listen to what our customer is saying, without them I don’t exist,” says Chef Eric. A philosophy that is all too true, but often forgotten in the hustle and bustle of the restaurant industry. Diving back into Traverse City’s Foodie scene, Chef Eric has re-emerged, larger than life. Reinvigorated with a passion for creating fine cuisine, and more importantly, a very happy customer. He is perfectly mastering the art of both at Reflect Bistro. Chefs and owners had to think out of the box and get creative to stay on top. “I was at the gym one day, and I realized we are all getting older, but everyone is still working out. Why give them larger portions? They don’t want to give up on their drinking either, so just make the portions smaller. The concept is to lower the price, but keep the quality high,” laughs Chef Eric. “People are craving Great Food at a Great Price”, says Chef Eric. With this renewed concept in mind he set out to find the best of the best local ingredients, so he can fulfil all their food wishes. First the Bistro needed sprucing up though. It was a nice hotel lounge, but they needed to modify the layout. “We needed a bigger lounge and we didn’t have any high tops, people love high tops, so we ordered six from Wayfair. Then we bought another six, and then some more, then we put this crazy happy hour together,” laughs Chef Eric. Menus were tested, tablecloths were ordered, big sexy wine-glasses arrived, additional staff were hired, and brand new industrial kitchen equipment was installed. “We built a restaurant backwards, the official sign only just went up the other day,” laughs Chef Eric. All this action isn’t just reserved for date nights or happy hours either. Reflect Bistro is also an energetic place to begin the day for breakfast. French toast, Waffles, Eggs benedict, and more, all with Chef Eric’s twist, make every meal a delicacy. In the middle of

the day squeeze in an out of this world lunch, especially if your craving a Jewish deli style 16 oz. Pastrami, or a Hamburger topped with a Crab-cake, Lobster Tail and Avocado, these dishes never disappoint. The Lunch menus are just as mind-blowing and mouthwatering as Dinner’s. Since June they’ve changed up the menu five times, only because Eric’s having so much fun. What’s happened since the soft launch has been nothing short of amazing. “Can you believe we are sitting inside a hotel, if you had ever told me this would have grown at
the pace it has, I would have said you were crazy,” laughs Chef Eric. “I’m so lucky that Alex is such a great guy to work for, he is the most genuine human being,” says Chef Eric of Cambria owner, Alex Mowczan. With all this growth, their volume has tripled, forcing them to change their reservations to the Open Table system, to calm the crowds and better serve their customers. They are ranked the number one Cambria Suites in the entire country in food and beverage, which is no small feat. “People are having a good time and they are coming because of what we are doing,” says Chef Eric proudly. That honor is well earned, the beverage menu is impressive and the wine list is fun, handpicked by Eric himself. Everything, except the French fries are made from scratch in -house, including the coleslaws, dressings, and who can ever forget Chef Eric’s famous secret sauces, which are the main event of every single delectable dish. Always order extra bread to soak up all the yummy deliciousness. “It’s been a year of wild growth, we have a plan and it’s awesome,” beams Chef Eric.

ho doesn’t love Maple Syrup? Let us count the ways, Pancakes, French Toast and Muffin’s oh my, and that’s just for breakfast! Only in Northern Michigan is March sweeter than any other, because March is the official Month of Maple - Mania. As the temperature heats up local farmers prepare for the timeless tradition of producing Maple Syrup from the Trees. They tap into the good stuff, literally. This amazing transformation from sweet sap, to the deliciousness that is Maple Syrup, can be seen in action all throughout Michigan. The lower peninsula starts to tap their Maple trees as soon as late February. The Northern-lower Peninsula waits till late March, and the Upper Peninsula waits till early April. Maple tree trunks are adorned with taps and buckets ready for the magic to begin. Slowly revealing the colorless and slightly sweet sap that can only be described as a gift from Mother Nature. This tradition dates all the way back to before Michigan joined the Union in 1837. Native Americans began tapping Maple trees hundreds of years ago. The average tap will produce about 10 gallons of Maple sap. That’s a whole lot of sap and it takes even more to make a gallon of Maple Syrup, about 40 gallons. The freezing during the night and the thawing temperatures during the day create pressure and force the sap out of the tree. It is one of the few crops where the demand exceeds the supply. They just can’t make enough of the stuff. So, if you’re feeling the need to take up a new hobby or just want some more sweetness in your life, go get your license and tap into the syrupy goodness.

Get Your MAPLE On Five years ago, the Michigan Maple Syrup Association started holding an annual Maple Syrup Weekend. It’s a family friendly event that encourages the public to come out and get a first-hand look at how the trees are tapped, the sap is boiled down, and turned into Pure Michigan Maple Syrup, and other sweets. There are three different weekends you can go to, as the event takes place all throughout Michigan. The first is in Southern Michigan below US 10, on March 18th and 19th. The second takes place above US 10 and below the Mackinaw Bridge in several locations. The closest to us to experience this awesome event is at Out of the Woods Farm in rapid City, on March 25th and 26th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The third event takes place at The Upper Peninsula on April 1st and 2nd. The syrup is all around and it’s time to go get your Maple on. They’ve got a lot more than just Maple Syrup though, with all kinds of delicious goodies from Maple Cream, Maple Candy, Maple Sugar, and much more. Maple RECIPES Maple-Glazed Salmon
Serves 4 Ingredients: 4 salmon fillets, 6 oz each 2 tsp mustard seeds 4 tbsp maple syrup salt and pepper, to taste
Preheat the oven to 375°. Rub the salmon with the mustard seeds and spoon one tablespoon of syrup over each fillet. Season with salt and pepper. Place the fillets on a cookie sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, basting with the syrup drippings at least twice during baking.

Maple RECIPES Bourbon Maple Cider 4 ounces bourbon 4 ounces applejack 2 ounces maple syrup 1 dash Angostura bitters 16 ounces hard cider
Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add bourbon, apple jack, maple syrup, and bitters. Shake for 15 seconds, or until well chilled. Strain into ice-filled cocktail glasses, then top each glass with 4 ounces cider.
Maple French Toast serves 4-6 Ingredients: 3 eggs, beaten ¾ cup milk ¾ cup maple syrup ½ cup cream dash of salt ¼ tsp nutmeg 6-8 slices sourdough bread
Beat milk, maple syrup, cream and spices until well combined. Add beaten eggs and beat til mixture is smooth. Poke sides of bread with fork, dip into egg mixture (allow to soak in a bit on each side). Cook on skillet until both sides are nicely browned. Serve with butter and maple syrup

Design Trends 2017
As spring kicks off and everything is new, so are the colors, patterns and finishes for your home projects. Some of this year’s top design trends include textural patterns, mixed metal finishes and, of course, color palette updates. For textural patterns, the biggest element we are seeing on a large pattern format is cement tiles. Most of these tiles are reminiscent to Olde World European or Spanish styling, but as always with a new twist. Whether the colors or patterns are more up to date, we have simply reintroduced what was very common in architectural design starting from the late 14th to early 15th century. The size of these tiles are typically a 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 individual, but often require a repeat of 3-4 for creating the overall pattern. Color palette is seen in simple two-tones of black and white or gray and cream to full range of colors in one design. Hardware and lighting manufacturers are satisfying our need to not be so matchy-matchy and offering many new styles in combinations of mixed metals. You no longer have to choose if you want bronze or brushed nickel, you can have both. We are also seeing a large resurgence of rose gold and varying shades with a champagne undertone. 50

Lastly are the paint manufacturer’s colors of the year. Although different per manufacturer, there is one consistent feel. Gray is not gone yet but is being reintroduced with shades of lavender, blue or taupe mixed in. I would say that from a design stand point, the hues are moving in a warmer direction than we have seen in the past few years. So, when considering a renovation or new project, consult your local professional to keep up with the 2017 Design Trends in your design!

I
n 1994 when Mike and Melissa Dow first met in Rosslyn Va. the couple lived in the shadows of Washington DC. Mike informed Melissa as their relationship flourished to get ready to spend a lot of time in Northern Michigan, to which Melissa replied, “Is that anywhere near Petoskey? Because my mom owns a gallery there,” she laughs as she recalls. Mike’s mom’s side of the family had planted roots in a cottage on Glen Lake way back in the 19th century, and his family has spent memorable summers up north ever since. Continuing the tradition Mike and Melissa’s girls Amanda and Rachel have become the 5th generation to Go Jump in the Lake all summer long. Because they are blessed to have a lake house, it’s the very reason they eventually chose to relocate to Traverse City. “We had no family in DC and two little girls to raise. Melissa always brought the girls for the entire summer already.

It became so apparent, why don’t we just move here, it just made perfect sense to be where we loved to be,” says Mike. They were extremely fortunate that it was the height of the real estate boom, and Mac-Mansion Mania ruled. They made a killing selling their house in the big city armed with a big budget that would accommodate double the house they had owned for a third of the price. So believe it or not, moving to Traverse City and buying a downtown Victorian house on a double lot, was a huge financial downsize. Settled into their home and loving their life worked for many for years until the realization set in that every Summer weekend they retreat to their lake house.
Returning from the peace and serenity of Glen Lake to Washington St. to overgrown lawns, and a 200-year-old house that was constant high maintenance. The girls were also getting older. “Nobody told me teenage girls don’t do yard work, Melissa is more of a tomboy, so I was clueless,” laughs Mike. MARCH/APRIL 2017 BAY LIFE NORTH

They put the house up for sale and began the adventure. “I argued that I still wanted to be downtown,” recalls Melissa. The timing fit perfectly when the Washington Place Condo big reveal premiered, “we knew these would work, we went back and forth with two different units we walked into this one, where I saw that view, and that was it,” says Melissa. The downsizing, of course, comes with sacrifice; they had to be willing to give up palatial amounts of space, several guest rooms, multiple bathrooms, walk in closets and just basic lack of room to store all the stuff acquired over the course of many years. “It didn’t seem like a big deal, we only used to live in one wing of the old house anyway,” laughs Melissa. With what they already had in mind, Mike and Melissa attended the HBA Home Expo show and walking around for more idea’s they met Paige Fuller, a talented fresh young designer at Bay Cabinetry. “I had another client at the expo who owned a condo at the same place, and I had just worked with them, so they all chatted, Mike and Melissa came back to the booth and said let’s do it!” laughs Paige. 56

It must have been kismet because even though Melissa was giving up a lot, on her list of absolute must haves, was still a huge kitchen. “I live in my kitchen, I absolutely love to cook,” say’s Melissa. Mike pipes in “she relieves stress by cooking, for hours she will be in there, we just happen to be lucky to get the bi-product that is amazing food,” laughs Mike. In all the planning meetings with Paige, the biggest take away was that they wanted to totally reinvent their space, from what they used to have.
“I had a really traditional kitchen it was updated, but very classic to match the house, we told Paige that here we wanted to go modern contemporary with clean lines, but light and bright. MARCH/APRIL 2017 BAY LIFE NORTH

But, she had to utilize every single inch of space possible. I sat with Paige and said these are the things I use, it was 73 items! This is a functional kitchen, not one for show,” laughs Melissa. Melissa’s cooking is clean eating and nutritionally based, so she needed a huge refrigerator, they also decided on a custom four-foot-long sink just to accommodate cleaning veggies and fruit ready for the chopping block. The final result is spectacular. The dramatic red backsplash boldly adds color, but functionally, it’s one of the easiest backsplashes to clean for a busy cook. “It’s actually an automotive paint that won’t chip, then covered with tempered glass, it’s modified from a design in our showroom that they loved from day one,” says Paige. The massive kitchen island on both sides hides a labyrinth of doors, drawers, and pull-outs and every inch are used to accommodate Melissa’s wish list of storage,

Dedicating so much square footage to the kitchen, they willingly gave up dining room space, but still managed to squeeze a table in and it converts to make more room when needed. It’s like a MacGyver kind of condo where nothing is as it seems, and everything hides 2 or 3 unique other purposes. Making their small space unbelievably sleek yet practical and functional. The bathrooms would be where they had to be most out of their comfort zone. “The girls had never shared a bathroom before, so we had to work to find some common ground between them,” says Melissa. The master bath still had room for a tub; they incorporated a floating vanity design that they had seen on Pinterest. It still hides lots of storage and looks ultra-contemporary.

Rachel’s room has a typical bed, but the first thing we noticed was her many books in the closet, organized by color! “It’s kind of a fun family joke at this point, I came home one day, and she had moved all of my cookbooks, I had them by food type, now they were by color,” laughs Melissa. 62

The theme of color coded bookends continues all throughout the elegant floor to ceiling custom shelving in the living room. Books are a passion of the Dow family, especially Mike who is a successful published author with his very own science fiction trilogy; Dark Matters, and Dark Matters: Betrayal. The books are award winning, and currently, Mike is busy writing his third. Peppered in between the bookends are beautiful smiling family photos that span the happy twentythree years Mike and Melissa have been together. Framed family photos from all generations along with Melissa’s mom's captivating art creates a wall of timeless memories in the hallway. It warmly greets you as you enter and leaves a lasting impression as you bid farewell from their new home. They may have given up a lot of stuff, but not their cherished family memories that still tell stories held forever in their hearts. They still have their lake-house; their true Happy Place. No longer anchored down, they’ve gained a carefree and spontaneous lifestyle which is exciting. Mike, Melissa, Amanda, Rachel, and Thunder the Cat, are ready for a new chapter in their book of life, that we hope always ends with a Happily Ever After. P.S. don’t forget to color-code it.

The Shores of Old Mission by Brad Reed After eating dinner at the Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant and Brewery, I grabbed my camera and tripod out of the truck and ran across the street just in time to make an image of the sun setting on the west side of Grand Traverse Bay. Every time my dad and I explore Old Mission, we feel like we are stepping back in time to the 1920’s. I always imagine I might run into Jay Gatsby, from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby.
