It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air – W.T. Ellis

FROM THE

My mom was truly my best friend. I miss her dearly every day, but especially at Christmas.

I

am a self-described Christmas elf. If you are around me at the holidays you may get tinseled or glittered if you stand still for a hot minute. I love the magic, the sparkle, the giving, the parties, the decorating and just all the glorious hoopla in general. I secretly wish my husband would channel Clark Griswold, and illuminate our whole house. (We own a ladder and a staple gun, I don’t see a problem). I would be in heavenly glory singing the messiah at full octane. To this day I have never even managed to get him on the roof to place even a single light string. (Can you say Bah Humbug?) He managed one star last year and quit while he was ahead. My oldest son came to visit, and thought it was a Star of David and that we were now Jewish. Not that there is anything wrong with that. OYE! I’m pretty sure I throw myself into the sparkly season with wild abandonment because I am still making up for lost time. I simply adore all the holiday traditions, because I didn’t have many growing up, I was an only child to a single mom, who was a Jehovah’s witness so she didn’t celebrate Christmas, at first. So I always wanted what I couldn’t have. I realize how super important these family traditions are, to make you feel grounded. Even poor Clark Griswold was trying to create the perfect Christmas with traditions with all the best of intentions. These quirky moments may seem silly or unimportant at the time, but will become cherished memories as the years go by. I go out of my way to create them for Teaghan and cling to the few I have from the past. Once I had my own family I would fly my mom into Maryland from Arizona for Christmas. She would help trim the tree and meticulously set the table fit for royalty. Lastly, she would cook Christmas dinner starting at 5pm on Christmas Eve. Every Christmas morning we woke up to the scent of a warm simmering oven. It wasn’t until she was gone I realized I let her do all the cooking. I never made a single note of any of her exceptional turkey feast recipes, the most amazing mashed potatoes you ever ate, including Yorkshire Puddings, and a traditional English Trifle. (Although I’m sure she would argue I wouldn’t be able to recreate it anyway).

publisher

For the last eight years, I can feel her presence in the room when I play the same Celine Dion Christmas CD that we used to sing together to, as we trimmed the tree. Complete with scratches right in the middle of our favorite song, The Prayer with singer Andrea Bocelli. Teaghan and I now play it together and I always tell her Nana is here. I cry every time of course. So last year I threw caution to the wind and wanted my very own Griswold Family Christmas (zero house lights, of course), my sons both drove up from Austin, Texas. We shopped, we Santa sighted, we baked, we ate, we went to mass, and much more. The house was full of warmth with all three of my kids under one roof. It wasn’t perfect, I realized I had never cooked a turkey in my life, did I mention it was Christmas morning? My theory was as long as the wine still flows, no one will notice, too much. It was all good, we ended the perfect Christmas day with a spirited game of Monopoly, I say spirited as we were playing and toasting with Jack and Jim. I wouldn’t recommend it if you have sore losers in your family, but it was fun to watch the meltdown. So this issue is all about Holiday and Traditions, so we have lots to share. It’s basically a Get Your Merry On. From Thanksgiving to the Big Guy in Red, we have the entire local goings on and Santa lowdown. Our home feature even ties in. We are over joyed to exclusively share some of Don Rutt’s stunning photography of The Hannah House on Sixth St. featured in the Perry Hannah’s Gifts, Then and Now book. Author and HomeOwner Peg Johnkoff is opening the doors to invite in the community for a spectacular Vintage Christmas Tree Open House, and we give you a special sneak preview. Get your Holiday On. Put on your angel wings, be kind to everyone (even in-laws), jingle bells, wear red, wear glitter, wear a Santa hat, quote Elf, cook, bake, party it up, watch every holiday movie, and give in entirely to go with the Christmas flow. Give, love and sparkle inside and out this holiday season, because it’s a Wonderful Life and Santa is watching.

The elegant event was a tribute of commitment to the future of care for the elderly and funds were raised for PACE – Program of All-inclusive Care for the Eldery. Guests all gained titles of Lords and Ladies in the parlor. Dinner was formerly announced, where freshly polished candelabra’s donned the tables. There were velvet couches to sit a while and guests even danced The Waltz.

High Impact Productions – Swingshift & The Stars Who had the Swingshift & The Stars “big Idea” and when did was it first launched? It was my brainchild, launching in the fall of 2008. I think as we get older, we take stock in how we are giving back to our community. I wanted to come up with a new “Fund-building & Awareness” approach. By combining multiple charity organizations and multiple events, it could naturally bring so much more to so many individuals! To date we have raised over 2.2 million dollars that goes directly to the organizations. What is the most rewarding part of the process for you personally? When an organization tells us that they were able to keep their doors open because of their involvement, they receive phonecalls, gain new volunteers, board members or are able to expand their facility and services. Not forgetting the wonderful people I meet, and also working alongside my amazing team at High Impact Productions. Tell us about your singing background? I did not start singing in front of people until I was in college. I went to Indiana University as a dance major and received a BS in dance. I was very shy about singing. At first there was panic, but then I caught the “fever.” I pursued musical theatre and joined my first band in TN in 1983. Five CD’s and a zillion songs later, I can hardly remember that my original plan had been to be a “Ballerina”! Are you a TC native? Does 21 years count? I grew up near Detroit and then moved to the Cleveland area. I got married in October of 1983. We moved to TN., then to NC and Cincinnati before settling here to raise our family. We have three kids, identical twins that are 25, living in Brooklyn, NY and teaching at the New York Film Academy and our 15 year old daughter who is a sophomore, studying dance at Interlochen Arts Academy. What’s your favorite family holiday tradition? No one but “Dad” is allowed downstairs on Christmas morning until he has checked that Santa has indeed been there. Then he starts a roaring fire in the fireplace. We all gather at the top of the steps in our PJ’s and bed-head for a photo. Honestly, we all look pretty ragged in these, many times 5:30 AM photos, but they make us all smile, laugh and reminisce.

Derek Woodruff AIFD, PFCI, CF, Owner Floral Underground - Winner of 2016 Sylvia Cup Design Competition You just won the most prestigious floral designer award in the country, how do you top that? What doors has it opened and where do you go from here? I have had many offers for big jobs on photo shoot collaboration, restaurant installations in big cities, and live stage presentations, just to name a few. Next year, I can choose to defend my title, or if I want to become an evaluator for the competition. The next goals would move up to trans-continental and international competitions in floral design, such as: the Gateway to America’s Cup, the America’s Cup and the World Cup Competition. It is on my bucket list to compete in each of these competitions. You are also a talented performer, what are your future dreams and aspirations? Because I am a big fan of being on stage and also being in front of the camera, in addition to my love of floral design, I would love to be able to have a successful career where I can do both. I dream of being a model or spokesperson for a movement in the floral industry, the face of something big, where I can have a presence on the web in videos and blogs, or perhaps even floral design on television (again). Any words of wisdom that you live by? Life is short and goes by very quickly. Don’t waste your time on things that make you unhappy. If you make time for friends, family, and doing what you love, you will lead a happy and successful life. You have been a huge part of the community for a long time. Tell us one thing that would surprise us about you? I moved to Traverse City when I was 20 years old on a fluke. I had dreamt of moving out to southern California to enrich my education in botanical studies. But sometimes life throws you a curve ball, and after my first trip to this area at the age of 19, I decided that I wanted to live here. Now that I am here, I don’t ever want to leave, and Traverse City will always be home base. Some fluke, huh? Give us three words that you would use to describe yourself? This question is always fun. I would have to say: “Competitive” “Quirky” “Outgoing”

A holiday miracle would be still fitting into my clothes after the holidays.

Spicing up the South Side There’s good news and good food coming to those who live out near the Chum’s Corner area as well as in Kingsley and Buckley. Partners John McGee and Glen Harrington owners of McGee’s 72, Sorellina and Harrington’s By The Bay, are adding a McGee’s 31 to their restaurant empire, in the former Big Papa’s space at 273 US-31. The dynamic duo are taking on a bold endeavor, investing over $100,000 into renovating the building and redoing the parking lot. It will be exciting for the foodies in the area! Finally, quality dining, instead of fast food. The menu will resemble their current three restaurants in town that have been so successful consisting of housemade burgers, sandwiches, seafood and other high quality menu items. If you have ever eaten at any one of their fine establishments you know that they pride themselves on only using the freshest ingredients to make each dish truly unforgettable. Expect no less from Mcgee’s 31, they are planning to hopefully be open before this holiday season.

Drinks All Around Did you know Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty beer glass? Holy Hops, that sounds like a serious disease to suffer from. Don’t Fear help is near at the new Earthen Ales Brewery, they’ll make sure that never happens. Opening soon in the Grand Traverse Commons, owners Jamie and Andrew Kidwell-Brix are brew masters, who fell in love and started sharing their love of beer together. They started brewing more beer than they knew what to do with, inviting friends to come over and share their delicious creations. So, what was their next step? They decided to do what any brewer aspires to do, quit their day job and open their very own Brewery. Jamie and Andrew need more friends to share their amazing brews with, that is where you come in. 1371 Gray Drive, Suite 200 Traverse City | 231-252-4270 www.earthenales.com

Fall is coming to a close and the Holiday Season is upon us. Let Them Eat Cake

Ever since the food trucks rolled into town the East side of Front Street has been the place to be. The icing on the cake, literally is the Sweet Tartlette bake shop. The owner Sarah Steele has been a renowned pastry Chef for 16 years. She graduated from Michigan State and moved here from Chicago two years ago to enjoy the beautiful Grand Traverse Bay and Lake’s Michigan has to offer. The first Holiday coming our way is Thanksgiving, and like most holiday meals, people have varying family traditions to what food graces their table. Many of course love roasted turkey with all the sides, some will do spiral glazed ham, and others maybe roasted pork loin. For these dishes I would recommend a lighter red such as Pinot Noir, Gammy Noir or even a great Lambrusco such as Lini Rose Lambrusco from Italy. If white wines are your thing, a bit richer white such as Chardonnay, Viognier or even an Arneis from Piedmont Italy would pair nicely. Whether you are looking for whites or reds, these wines will all pair well for these types of dishes. If you are going to be preparing a heavier dish such as venison, beef loin or braised pastrami I would certainly recommend going with a “bigger” red such as Barolo, Rosso di Montalcino, Cabernet Sauvignon or maybe even a Syrah. One of my recommended picks would be the Il Poggione Rosso di Montaclcino. A beautiful wine with intense aromas of field berries and on the palate full bodied and velvety with smooth tannins. Of course bubbles are enjoyable all the time, but during the holidays they just seem appropriate to help celebrate friends and family. There are sparkling wines produced all over the world from Champagne France, to Piedmont Italy to Napa Valley California. Whether you are looking for something a bit sweeter such as Spinetta Moscato di Asti from Piedmont Italy or something bone dry such as Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne, there is something for everybody. The bottom line is enjoy the time eating, drinking and enjoying friends and family this holiday season. Cheers, Darric, Folgarelli’s Market & Wine Shop

FEELING

GOOD

By Jala Wharton

It’s time to sparkle as the holiday party season kicks into high gear. As a professional model and actress Jala has to sparkle on any given day! We asked her to share top secret tips she has learned over the years from the best makeup artists and stylists all over the world. • Glowing Skin: I try to drink at minimum ½-1 gallon of water everyday. I notice a huge difference in not only how my skin looks but how I feel. I’m an avid Juicer. Once a week I make a batch of Beet, Turmeric, Ginger and Carrot Juice to cleanse and nourish my body. These veggies have many great health benefits but Turmeric is especially beneficial for your skin, I even take it in the pill form. • Hair: I try to deep condition once a week and I only wash it 3 times week. I wash my hair at night and wake up with the best texture that lasts for 2-3 days. If I’m lucky I can just get up and go; If not I’ll quickly throw my curling iron on, add a few curls and I’m out the door. • Makeup: I like minimal make-up, to amplify your natural beauty highlighting certain features. My musts are an eyebrow pencil; it lifts your face, drawing more attention to your eyes to make them

pop. A light concealer; under eye and a light dusting all over for evening tones. Mascara and the finishing touch is a clear Rose bud flavored Lip Salve. • Dressing Up: I always say wear whatever you're most comfortable in. My go to outfit is my favorite pair of skinny jeans, a simple shirt, tank, maybe a blazer or soft sexy sweater. To add some Sass, throw on some sexy heels or a sparkly bracelet. No matter what I always need to ready to dance. So I dress accordingly! Don’t over think an outfit too much. It will drive you crazy. Grab and go is how I roll, more time to enjoy being out socializing with friends. • Shoes: I LOVE shoes; everything from cowboy boots to athletic sneakers to heels, don't even get me started on my slipper collection. I mastered the art of walking in heels in my early 20’s when I lived in NYC. Have fun with them. Colors, height, whatever calls to you. But, if you're wearing Stilettos always have a pair of cozy flats close by you can slide on if your feet start to get sore, Trust me! There is nothing worse than the pain of uncomfortable shoes when you're stuck at a fun event. Whatever shoes you chose to wear with your outfit; own it, be confident and above all have fun.

RED GINGER

Red is always

HOT T

here is a Chinese Proverb that says, “Preserve the old, but know the new.” It perfectly describes Dan and Pam Marsh’s Red Ginger Restaurant. When it premiered in 2007 on Front St., their East Meets West, Asian inspired cuisine was a bold move. It was daringly different from the array of fine dining establishments at the time. Even a really good fortune cookie couldn’t have predicted its spectacular success. Red Ginger is renowned as every foodie’s favorite go-to restaurant, “preserve the old.” Patrons venture out to taste and, “know the new.” However, they always come back to their revered Red Ginger, because Red is always HOT. Everyone craves a night out at Red Ginger, where its incredible ambience and allure is forever the happening place to see and be seen.

Red Ginger is everyone’s cherished place to eat, drink, and be merry because that’s just how they roll. Sipping a Red Dragon at the sushi bar, watching expert chefs hand roll fresh enticing creations, is a mouthwatering event to behold. They rock your chopsticks; the delectable menu is always superb and the marvelous martinis are epic. Their 3pm Happy Hours are a Traverse City local tradition. When seated in the Front St. window with your crush, hubby, or peeps, it is always a memorable occasion, sharing laughter and spirited good times. So instead of telling the story of the menu, the drinks, and the ambiance, most of which our readers always joyfully experience, we got to delve into the history of how Red Ginger came to be. Hopefully you’ll learn some fun facts you never knew and will enjoy sharing them with your friends on your next visit. We met with owner Dan Marsh, in the newly opened covered back patio, to hear his story. He shared his journey of a thousand miles, which began with a single step. You may not even know that Dan is the youngest son of Bill Marsh and the only son of four, that didn’t follow in the family footsteps leading into the car dealership business? He was attending Colorado State in his last year, studying for a Human Development Degree to become a social worker. It was then he got bit by the food bug and wanted to explore the industry. Coming back home to Traverse City, he was lucky to be mentored by Howard Shelby, at the then Bowers Harbor

Inn. “That was the place to be at the time, he inspired so many other chefs around, he taught me so much in a short amount of time,” explained Dan. After an internship in the kitchen for a year, he moved on to enroll in the Culinary Institute of America. “It was perfect timing, after five years in collage I had done all my partying and I had my act together,” laughed Dan. He proved it by graduating with high honors and in September of 1995, moved to New York City to begin his culinary adventure. He landed a job at The Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center, not too shabby. The restaurant is an impeccably revered high society place that opened in 1934, that sits 65 floors high, overlooking the skyline. It’s even been featured in numerous films, and in 2012, was declared a New York Landmark. In the two years Dan spent here, it served classic French cuisine. “It was great work experience, and also union ran, so I had to have 2 consecutive days off. I would strap on my backpack and explore NYC, but I was poor so it wasn’t too glamorous,” laughs Dan. On those explorations, he would hit in SoHo, where he found another landmark restaurant named Zoe, that intrigued him. “They were very big into California – Asian style, with an all-American wine list from Napa Valley, and Sonoma. I wanted to learn a lot more about Asian dining and knew I had to move to California, either San Francisco or Seattle. I chose San Francisco so I could learn from renowned chef Annie Gingrass,” says Dan. Annie 30

was the first female Executive Chef for the Wolfgang Puck fine dining restaurant Postrio Co, where she won the esteemed James Beard award. After five years and with big investors in her corner, Annie branched off to open the restaurant Hawthorn Lane. “She was awesome and because we had such backing we were lucky to have any equipment we needed,” says Dan. She was also great friends with Barbara Tropp who is known as the Julia Childs of Chinese cooking. “It had amazing inspiration, heavy in southeast Asian,” says Dan. There is no doubt Barbara’s China Moon Cookbook was influential in an eventual Red Ginger restaurant in Traverse City! Though that wasn’t meant to be just yet, it was early in 2001, and finding himself burnt out, Dan moved back home. He dabbled in the family business for a while, he didn’t find a calling in cars, but he did find his future wife, Pam. Pam was working at the Saturn dealership and that’s how they met. So, the car industry ultimately still became a big part of his life, after-all. It was 2007, and it finally seemed the timing was right. “My roots were in cooking and I thought Traverse City was ready for this source of cooking,” recalls Dan “If I was going to do this, I was going all in, and do it right,” laughs Dan. Which meant buying a building; there were two heavy contenders, one actually a historical building, not on Front St at all. Can you imagine a bustling Front St. with no Red Ginger Restaurant? Me neither. So, they went big, buying the current building from the Rotary. “It was a closed bid auction, and nerve-wracking,” re-calls Dan. Construction

was endless, June 2007 was the promised date, but the restaurant didn’t finally open until November. Even the name had a hiccup. “I knew I wanted it to be named Ginger, but we found out there was another Ginger. So, we added Red for Red Ginger which is a flower,” says Dan. Their exotic named martinis; Blood Orange and Red Dragons, just to name a few, were all created by the bartenders and core staff just before opening. “I am more of a Beer, Wine and Scotch guy, “laughs Dan. By his side through this epic endeavor has been Pam. She is instrumental in running the restaurant, as the Beverage Manager. She also greets guests warmly as old friends and family, as they arrive. “I don’t know how she does it. On a busy night, the turnovers, reservations, waits, and walk in’s. It’s a stressful thing that involves a lot of math,” says Dan. With Dan in the back and Pam in the front, they make a terrific team. After a few soft openings, the Red Ginger you know and love today, has been a huge success. Though, it wasn’t just a good fortune cookie or a happy accident. Any good thing takes time and this wasn’t Dan’s first rodeo. The wealth of knowledge and experience Dan has earned along the way is mind-blowing. Yet, Dan and Pam do attribute a lot of the good luck they have had to their amazing staff, “people sought us out to work for us. My sushi chef has been with us since the day we opened.” Red Ginger has now won various accolades nationwide. This restaurant is a legendary crowd pleaser, just like its ancient Chinese influences it is inspired by.

hile the Holidays are a time of great joy and togetherness for most of us, many are also painfully reminded of the empty chair at the table of a loved one lost. The Holidays you once shared are forever changed when a family loses a father, a mother, or the absolutely unimaginable feeling of losing a child. Worlds are shattered and families are trying to salvage a new normal but just don’t know where to start. This is where Michaels Place non-profit organization, has helped countless families to learn where the healing can begin. They celebrate 15 years of providing support and advocacy to children, teens, and adults in our community. We wanted to acknowledge this remarkable milestone, while thanking them for their tremendous passion to make the world a better place after enormous loss. If you know any family that is grieving ask them these five simple words that can once again give them hope and repair their fractures. Do you know about Michael’s Place? Life will never be the same, but they learn to smile again through the tears. “15 years ago, Chris Dennos and I had the desire and determination to help children and families as they faced the most difficult time of their lives- the death of a loved one. I remember waiting in anticipation to see if anyone would trust us enough to share their deepest sorrow with us as strangers. At Michael's Place, strangers quickly turn into lifelong friends. There is something incredibly special about people having experienced like-losses and finding each other. Society tells us that we need to get over the death of our loved ones and move on with our lives. Michael's Place goes against the grain and instead, we ask them to share their stories of their loved ones and walk the journey with them. It has been an amazing privilege to be trusted enough by the children, teens, and families who have sought our help. They are brave and courageous people. Their stories are embedded into our hearts and our lives have been forever changed.”

ASK

ANGELA

BY ANGELA GOODALL

Setting the table for the holidays, can be almost as fun as cooking (for some maybe even more so). I am admittedly a dishware collector and believe that honoring your guests with a beautifully decorated table is as important as the deliciousness of the meal being presented. Although a huge fan of colorful and patterned dinnerware, for my holiday settings, I typically start with my neutral creams. I use my woven wood placemats and linen table runner, so the dĂŠcor I gather is the showstopper set on a neutral back drop.

Setting The Perfect

Fortunately for us in Northern Michigan, with some efforts and creativity, it can be easy to use our natural environment to create some beautiful winter holiday table settings. What typically comes to mind are the standard stand by pine boughs (although, classic and fragrant). Mix some bare branch trimmings in, sprayed with silver glitter or white paint. Use some pinecones in varying sizes for texture and complete the look by incorporating small blown glass bulbs or red berries and you have a very festive table setting. Using glass candle holders gives you a wonderfully intimate and reflective light source for your dinner. For a Thanksgiving feast, I use dried cattails, grasses and of course some gourds and/or leaves. Companies like Horchow, Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel often have inexpensive soup bowls or bread plates that will carry the theme just a little farther. Purchase some candle sticks that look like corn cobs and you have a perfect setting. To prep for holiday entertaining that can carry the whole year through, invest in some neutral dinnerware, placemats, table runners or cloths. Of course don’t forget the linen napkins with themed rings and you have the perfect base to decorate for each holiday in the color and theme you see fit!

Not a Gym – It’s a Planet Fitness A whole new universe of exercise is coming to TC, the popular franchise Planet Fitness that is. The new venture will be housed in the large building that once was The Office Depot, next to Aldi grocery store, with a plan to open by Spring. Just like any dream that becomes a reality it begins with passion and this is no exception. The owners are downstate Planet Fitness members Lonni Bhirdo and Ken DeBusscher who loved the franchise and what it stands for so much they wanted to open one of their own. The famous franchise brands itself as being a “Judgement Free Zone” not a typical gym, and not intimating to us normal people that just want to try and be healthy and get a great work out. They are also super affordable, with rates as low as $10 a month! Come summer there should be a whole lot more beach bodies, now we have no excuses to not be in shape!

Perry Hannah's Home A GIFT Through the Generations

BY PEG JONKHOFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY DON RUTT 52

Peg Jonkhoff on the rooftop of the Hannah House

rom a luxurious Mansion to a Funeral Home. As you drive through the historic streets of Traverse City, meandering along Sixth St. a magnificent mansion standing tall and stately beckons your attention. Today, it houses the Reynolds-Jonkhoff family funeral home. The mansion, with its rich history, was originally built by Perry Hannah in 1891 to 1893. He built the house at the ripe old age of seventy, as his retirement home. It’s hard to envision these days, as most people downsize with retirement. Then, if you were a high society lumber Lord you built a spectacular structure, as a show of wealth and stature. On December 10th, we open the doors and welcome you inside, to experience the spirit of the season, community kindness and the gift that is the Perry Hannah Home.

Perry Hannah is recognized as Traverse City’s founding father, first city planner and master builder. In 1850, at the age of 26 years old, he was President of Hannah, Lay and Company in Chicago. He worked with partners A. Tracy Lay and James Morgan in the lumber business. In search of lumber in 1851, Perry sailed into the remote Grand Traverse Bay. Grand Traverse County at the time was a gargantuan NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 | BAY LIFE NORTH

pine forest accessible only by boat. Perry was a visionary with keen leadership skills who saw incredible opportunity. He purchased the Boardman lumber mill along with 200 acres from the federal government to augment his company’s Chicago lumber business and the rest as the saying goes... is history! Perry came to Traverse City for the lumber, but stayed his entire lifetime. He provided jobs, economic growth and a multitude of gifts in the form of buildings and land that our community enjoys to this very day. The book Perry Hannah’s Gifts Then and Now shares complete details about his many gifts such as his bank, mercantile, hotel, property for Oakwood Cemetery and the Carnegie Library. The entire second half of the book acts as a complete stunningly visual, guided tour of his retirement home on Sixth Street. This is just a small prerequisite of all its many gifts and an invitation to welcome you inside in person.

Perry Hannah’s home is an architectural gift that our community has used for four distinct purposes over time. First, it served as the Hannah family home until Elsie (Perry’s daughterin-law) donated the home to the American Legion in 1933. Secondly, the American Legion owned it, but never used it as headquarters. Thirdly, Central School located just south of the Hannah House burned and the students attended school at the Hannah House from 1934 to 1937 until it was rebuilt. Fourthly, in 1937 Harry Weaver bought the house from the American Legion for a fraction of its original cost and it’s been a funeral home ever since. The Jonkhoff family has owned the funeral home since 1976. My husband Dan and I have owned the home since 1992. We are fortunate to work with our daughters, sixth generation licensed funeral directors Christy Jonkhoff-Hater and Lindsey (Jonkhoff) Rogers, and our Reynolds-Jonkhoff work family of caring professionals. Our funeral home is rich in history, family heritage and award winning excellence in funeral service. We consider this work to be our ministry as we care for those who have died and serve the bereaved of our community from all walks of life. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 | BAY LIFE NORTH

So many people wish to tour this historic home and this is the perfect time to see it decorated for the holiday season. We invite you to bring items for a local food pantry or unwrapped Toys for Tots toy to place under the main floor Christmas tree. The home’s 20+ trees are primarily located on the second and third floors. They have been collected over the decades and include such theme trees as family and friend’s collections, the Zonta Club’s Festival of Trees and new this year from the Celebrity Christmas Classic and St. Francis Catholic Church’s Christmas Festival to name a few. There is even a tree in the garden’s gazebo that was anonymously donated and arrived on my birthday September 8, 2009! This gazebo was the former bell tower of the old Central School built in 1877 just one block to the southwest on Seventh Street. What an incredible gift enjoyed year round especially from our funeral home’s lounge window.

Vintage, new and handmade items for every girl's dream dressing room!

In addition to seeing all the trees, several local authors will sign their books for Christmas gift giving. I will also be happy to sign the second edition of Perry Hannah’s book which includes an Appendix A about Perry Hannah’s bronze statue, Appendix B on his Genealogy and new photos by Don Rutt. I encourage you visit www.perryhannah.com to learn more about Perry’s book or Like Perry Hannah on Facebook to follow his anonymous statue “gifts”. Special music will be performed at 4 pm by TC Celtic whose members include Dane Hyde, Don Shikosky and Dave Martin as well as Rick Harkert who will play Christmas songs on the clavinova at 6 pm. A floral demonstration by award winning floral designer, Derek Woodruff will take place at 5 pm. Local florists will display festive arrangements.

FUN FACTS • Perry Hannah and his wife Ann lived on Bay St. raising their 3 children for 40 years. They envisioned Sixth St. as a quiet part of town to retire to. • The house was started in 1891 and completed in 1893 • Its foundation is solid Vermont granite blocks • 30 to 60 carpenters, masons, laborers and master wood carvers worked on the home. • There are 10 fireplaces with mantels crafted from Golden Oak, Brazilian Mahogany, Black Oak, Birch, Cherry, Beech, Walnut and Birds-eye Maple • Several mantels contain engraved leaves to match the wood they were derived from. • It has 3 floors and a full basement measuring 3,500 feet per floor • It houses 34 rooms, 6 bathrooms and 3 built-in porches • The attic was originally planned as a ballroom, but Mr. Hannah had enough construction work and called it done. • The home is meticulously kept and very little change has taken place. The woodwork is Hannah era beautiful and décor always Victorian era correct. • Today, all three floors, except for the attic, are used for funeral service.
