You don't have to be GREAT to START But you have to START to be GREAT FROM THE

publisher

First we introduce you to the amazingly talented photographer Heather Higham; her work is featured on the cover and inside. She has such an astonishing eye, and actually started out professional life as a teacher, but her happy place is hiking in the middle of nature, lugging her camera. She picked up a camera at some time in her life to Start, and I can bet it wasn’t instant magic; no one captures the astounding work she has so far without some real commitment to their craft. It’s actually more than Great, but you get the point!

Up the mountain I go with Little Miss Ski Racer, Teaghan, who has no fear.

W

ell here we are again, a brand new year rolling in. It is so true that as you get older they seem to come a lot quicker—why the heck is that? And all that fresh start, New Year’s hoopla seems to be a thing of the past. Making resolutions just isn’t the trend anymore. Is that also because I’m old? I do know in my infinite wisdom of years so far that basically every day is a fresh start. Whatever our goals, big or little, whatever our passions, personal or career related, we actually get every day as a do-over. So if you did try a resolution, maybe its success so far is teetering. (Suck it up already! Just kidding.) Just remember that with each and every morning, we get to start fresh. You can take on the day, one day at a time, grab it by its horns and not give in to the defeat with yourself. I love this quote: “If you’re tired of starting over, stop giving up.” This can pretty much work for anything we try, right? That’s what is so fascinating about my job: Every day is truly different. With the magazine we get to tell the stories of the people in our community, from their struggles to their eventual successes. I am inspired and motivated on a daily basis by these unique, determined individuals who don’t stop, don’t take no for an answer, whether it’s a start-up restaurant, new business, a job move or building a dream house. They achieve, build, conquer and aspire to make a great life in this awesome place we all call home. They all weren’t great at whatever it was when they started, and some just maybe started with dumb luck, but they started and stuck to their guns and created something great—which gives us a great lead in to delve into those juicy, colorful, fun pages ahead.

Denise and Paul Genoa just recently built their retirement home in Suttons Bay. They have travelled all around the world and chose here to finally call home. Moving to a new place after 20 years in the D.C. area and building a brand new house certainly had to Start somewhere, and now they are living a Great life, reveling in all the four glorious Michigan seasons. The famous restaurants of the Magnum Hospitality group started long ago. They celebrate having recently just sold their business after 18 years. But they have passed along the baton to new owners, and we honor that success too as we take a trip Down on the Bayou, just in time for Mardi Gras, by giving you a peek inside Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen’s marvelous and ingenious world. It’s not just going out to dinner. It’s a culinary adventure for all the five senses: smell, taste, sight, sound and touch. Now that is Great. So whatever it is you tried to Start with good intentions, keep it up and you will get to be Great at it. Maybe it’s as simple as drinking more water (more than wine), working out regularly, eating healthier and so on. These just happen to be mine, along with finally becoming a decent downhill skier, (that means to not pizza wedge the entire mountain down). It’s my nemesis, I didn’t grow up here, and didn’t even try on ski’s until just a few years ago, and so far it has never become naturally enjoyable to me, and the worst part is I know it’s all in my head! I have decided this is my year (it’s not easy being told by your ski race, trophy winning seven year old, that you basically suck!) So this year I am going to conquer the mountain, because it’s not the mountain that we conquer, but ourselves. Wish me luck, (I need it). Enjoy the wonderful winter and I’ll see you out on the slopes.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN REVEALED The epic rawness of Northern Michigan’s beauty is captured by a Snap Happy Gal named Heather Higham. Her stunning images adopt all the elements of Mother Nature as the perfect backdrop; Day, night and all four seasons, encompassing all the majesty and awe that sits right outside our back yard.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL The phrase “laissez le bon temps rouler” is a Cajun French expression that conveys the “joie de vivre” (“Joy of Living”) attitude that prevails in New Orleans. A town of music, laughter, food, crazy times and Mardi Gras. Experience it all in Elk Rapid’s at Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen.

Not a Gym – It’s a Planet Fitness A whole new universe of exercise is coming to TC, the popular franchise Planet Fitness that is. The new venture will be housed in the large building that once was The Office Depot, next to Aldi grocery store, with a plan to open by Spring. Just like any dream that becomes a reality it begins with passion and this is no exception. The owners are downstate Planet Fitness members Lonni Bhirdo and Ken DeBusscher who loved the franchise and what it stands for so much they wanted to open one of their own. The famous franchise brands itself as being a “Judgement Free Zone” not a typical gym, and not intimating to us normal people that just want to try and be healthy and get a great work out. They are also super affordable, with rates as low as $10 a month! Come summer there should be a whole lot more beach bodies, now we have no excuses to not be in shape!

Cookie Monsters Shark Tank look out. Meet the savvy young man and Traverse City native (born at Munson), Austin Groesser. At just 22 years old, he has already well earned the label entrepreneur, scooping out a unique business idea, and launching his own Yummy Cookie Dough brand, “Bigg Dipper.” “My criteria had to be it was something I could bootstrap. I have worked since I was 15 and already bought my own home at age 20,” says Austin. He tirelessly tested recipes; it had to be delicious raw, be bake-able into Cookies, and must be as junk free as possible. Once perfected, he decided he needed a partner. He met Daniel Fuller in English class at NMC, and the two are the perfect the Cookie Crew. They whip up tasty batches that you can already purchase at Oleson’s on Long Lake Road. Their mission statement is, “To supply our customers the best Cookie Dough on the market, while providing the best Customer Service Experience of their life.” It’s a whole new batch of OCD—Obsessive Cookie Disorder—and I think they are going to be super successful. MOVERS & SHAKERS

Kent Wood

Director of Government Relations at Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce Can you explain in layman’s terms what you do? I help advocate for the issues and policy positions that are important to our Chamber members by working with elected officials and policy makers at the federal, state and local level. In short, I’m a lobbyist, but also create programs to help our members connect and build relationships with policy makers themselves. You’re a TC Native, what is your favorite secret spot and why? Two of them: the short game area at Elmbrook Golf Course off Hammond Road offers hours of free chipping and putting practice options with usually just a few (if any) people to share it with. Also Hoosier Valley south of Chums Corners in the Traverse City State Forest. Tons of two-tracks, beautiful scenery, lots of wildlife. Being a busy guy and father of 3 what’s the perfect date night with your wife Glenna? We love traveling someplace for an overnight to have dinner and see a concert or show. Most of the time, with 3 kids, we have to forego the “perfect” date for the “realistic” one, in which case we love going out for a nice dinner. What is one thing that would surprise us about you? Maybe not total surprise since I’ve shared publicly before, but I played quarterback in college and was a semi-professional singer in the summers. Not your typical combo. I’m also feverishly working to become good enough at golf where I can compete in the Michigan Open Championship. It was a dream of mine to play and have my dad caddy for me. Even though he has since passed, it would still be an incredible experience and I know how proud he would be. If we asked your kids to tell us one thing about you, what would they say? That Dad…he’s a stickler for reading homework and washing hands after going potty. Any favorite quote or words of wisdom you to try to live by? “Who’s got it better than us? Nooobody!” ~ Michigan Football coach Jim Harbaugh. I love this mentality, and my kids and I say it to each other almost every night before bed. While it’s fun for us to recite, and has special significance to me as a life-long UM football fan, I hope it will help to instill in them the attitude to pause frequently, look around and notice all that we have, where we live, who we have for family and friends and ask – who truly does have it better than we do?

WINTER 2016 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Dr. Jill Vollbrecht Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism What do you find most rewarding in your work? I love helping people feel better and accomplish their goals. Sometimes, the biggest help I can provide is just to listen. I also love helping patients afford their health care more easily. Did you know you wanted to be a doctor at an early age? When I was in high school, I came down with a weird virus that knocked me out of commission for 6 weeks. Our family pediatrician was really important in terms of both diagnosing what was wrong, as well as emotional support. That was when I decided to become a physician. I decided on endocrinology both because my mother has type 1 diabetes, but also because the problem-solving that my specialty involves appeals to the mystery-loving, case-cracking aspect of my personality. How did you come to make a home in Northern Michigan? My husband Tim and I finished our medical training downstate at the same time, and it can pretty challenging to find the perfect job in the perfect location for 2 physicians simultaneously. We came up here on a lark, interviewed, and loved the people we met here. Did we ever luck out, or what? There is no better place in Michigan to raise a family! You have 3 children, what is the perfect day to spend together? Ideally, all of the children will sleep past 7am, lounge around in our pajamas, drink coffee, and play Settlers of Catan (our new obsession). Later, we'd go to the lake, or the Dunes, look for Petoskey stones, hang out with friends, cook dinner, and go to bed good and tired. What is something your kids would tell us about you? I suspect it would be, "she makes really good food, except for that it has too much green stuff and onions. She really loves Star Wars." Do you have any hidden talents that would surprise us? I enjoy making elaborate cakes, and embrace hip-hop dancing as a form of cardiovascular exercise. I don't get to do either as often as I would like! Being a doctor is pretty serious stuff, what do you do for fun? I love reading postapocalyptic novels (nothing says FUN like the end of the world! :)). I exercise daily for both fun and stress relief, and really like planning theme parties. Reality television has always been a secret vice of mine it's great for watching while on the elliptical machine!!! WINTER 2016 | BAY LIFE NORTH

PEARL'S NEW ORLEANS KITCHEN

Let the Good Times Roll

T

o shake up the norm for some rip-roaring fun and a tantalizing culinary adventure look no further on your quest than Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen in Elk Rapids. Get ready to be transported into a stimulating and whimsical universe, bursting at the seams with Cheerful Creole Culture and Spicy Cajun Flavor, all served up with good old Southern Hospitality.

Welcome to a Taste of the Bayou, Northern Michigan–style, where animated images of native Creoles evoke music and laughter and welcome you inside the restaurant’s bold and buoyant world. At every turn, stimulating colors dominate and captivate. Walls are lined with mind-blowing rows of elaborate, vintage Jim Beam bourbon whiskey bottles, and fiery Tabasco hot sauce (now there’s a dangerous combination). An eye-popping, feisty alligator hangs suspended from the ceiling; a flashy dragon covets a wall, lively humongous barflies hover on the loose above the bustling bar, and of course at every turn there are throngs of shiny beads that dangle and delight. The party doesn’t stop even on an eventful visit to the restroom; they too are full of vivid, imaginary glee. All around Pearl’s, it’s a wild and wonderful feast for the eyes. The entire experience is enthralling, and you haven’t even sampled the daringly different cuisine or luscious libations yet. Let the good times roll indeed! The whole premise of Pearl’s is built on the fun-loving spirit of the Creole People of The Big Easy, the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. (The city was established WINTER 2016 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Dare yourself to taste different food, sway to the heavy jazz and let loose with libations. by French colonists back in 1715.) Their long history is rich in celebration. They are festive folk with a love of dance and music who kick up their heels and revel in frolic. Their famous food is based on the staples of Gumbo, Jambalaya, Po’boys on French bread, and from the waterways Oysters, Crawfish, Shrimp and Crab. The distinctive dishes and mouthwatering zesty flavors, partnered with rum and fruit juice signature drink The Hurricane, make any day at Pearl’s an out-of-the-ordinary, rousing experience. They even have Happy Hour seven days a week from 3 to 7 p.m. But the magical month of February brings the jubilant carnival bash “Mardi Gras” (French for Fat Tuesday), a Colossal Party at Pearl’s for five whole days. The only difference is that it’s all G-rated and family friendly, with lots and lots of bead throwing. It’s a hub of hullabaloo, and not to be missed. All the fun begins on Friday, Feb. 5 for Kids Night with Wowie the clown headlining for entertainment, wowing the kids with face painting and balloon animals and crazy hats. It’s become a favorite tradition for many families and super fun. The merriment continues through the weekend with Fat Tuesday as the sensational epic event. The fancy bash is by ticket only; it’s a steal of a deal for $60, which buys you an incredible four-course meal complete with a live soulful and electrifying performance by the Grammy-nominated new Queen of Blues and Cajun Zydeco music star Lisa Haley and The Zydecats. In the affluent circles of Jazz and Blues music, we are told Lisa Haley is a really big deal! If a Mardi Gras celebratory quick trip down to the Bodacious Bayou or a hop over to Rowdy Rio de Janeiro isn’t in the cards, I’d say Fat Tuesday at Pearl’s is Perfect! Pearl’s has been celebrating Mardi Gras since they opened 18 years ago. Not bad for a restaurant that when the original founding partners of Magnum Hospitality opened it, the doubters said a 22

Creole restaurant in Northern Michigan would never make it! The savvy partners also launched the successful Red Mesa in Traverse City, and Red Mesa and Café Santé restaurants in Boyne City. The terrific trio just recently closed the kitchens to their hospitality days, retiring from the restaurants and passing the tried-and-true traditions on to new owners, who promise wholeheartedly to loyal foodie lovers that nothing will change. That’s good news for the long-dedicated and devoted diners who gather with friends and family who crave the bold-flavored fare. A little Crawfish Corn Chowder, a big steamy bowl of Louisiana Jambalaya, maybe a saunter with BBQ Shrimp - New Orleans Style, a perfect plate of Oysters Rockefeller, followed by an entrée of Delta Catfish smothered with crawfish tails in garlic cream sauce. All washed down nicely with a rum and fruit juice, 23.5-ounce Hurricane or A Big Easy Mary garnished with a blue cheese stuffed jalapeno, crawfish and pickled carrots, rimmed with Creole seasoning, leaving room for a divine dessert of Bananas Foster. These truly unique culinary temptations and the one-of-a-kind wanderlust ambience can only be found at Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen. What a not-to-miss opportunity we have to experience a fun fantasy fiesta, dare yourself to taste different food, sway to the heavy jazz and let loose with libations. Be taken away with all the tempting gaiety that encompasses a trip to the real Big Easy, all it could offer and more, right here in our backyard in Northern Michigan. Yes indeed, Let the Good Times Roll. 617 Ames St Elk Rapids. 231-264-0530 Magnumhospitality.com/pearls

A Heated, Intense Debate! A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. “He doesn’t stand a chance,” mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. Meet the Photographer Heather Higham My husband and I moved to northern Michigan after living in the north Georgia Mountains for a few years. We grew up in Ohio, and have also lived in central Kentucky and southern Florida. Education and career opportunities took us to the other locations, but the abundant natural beauty - and the easy access to it - brought us Up North.

Sabin Sunrise

In the nearly six years we've lived here, I've shot the northern lights, ice caves, lighthouses, shipwrecks, untold miles of lakeshore and woodlands, and I still regularly stumble upon inspiring new destinations. Michigan's distinct seasons add even more interest: I enjoy revisiting previously photographed locations as the season’s progress, seeking new details, lighting, reflections, and moods. I've also found real joy in my outdoor portraiture work, which allows me to capture memories for people who love this area against the backdrop of its natural splendor. I appreciate Northern Michigan as a community and place, and I hope my photography expresses my gratitude, while encouraging people to get out and experience it for themselves.

Every year designers look to Pantone to announce the “Color of the Year,” and for the first time, the blending of two shade’s – Rose Quartz and Serenity. The reason given was consumers are seeking mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace. In other words, and our humble opinion, colors that scream cotton candy, take us to a happy place.

e usually tell the story of a couple’s journey to living the Baylife here in Northern Michigan, but Denise Genoa did such a great job of putting pen to paper herself, we thought it would be fun to shake things up a little and bring you her words as she wrote them. But first, a little prequel about our visit to Denise and Paul’s home on a snowy winter’s day.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE GULLON

We were warmly welcomed into their beautiful home by their beloved Burmese cats, Roxy and Miles, one who is a little more outgoing than the other. The heat coming from the unique, European-designed hearthstone fire was blazing, and the living room’s ambiance was as cozy as could be. Denise proudly gave us a tour of the home. “We really love it,” she says. “It’s not too big, and the view is great.” The wow factor—in addition to the view of the distant blue bay—is the stunning, spacious and elegant kitchen. “I love to cook and to entertain, and the best parties always end up in the kitchen,” she laughs. The hallway off the back of the kitchen finds a well-stocked pantry with a surprise. “She thinks it’s her pantry but it’s actually my bourbon aging room,” Paul WINTER 2016 | BAY LIFE NORTH

informs us with a wink, and an opening of the door does indeed give a glimpse of two little treasured barrels at the ready. To the left is what Denise cleverly calls her office and her i-room, hiding the i-clutter. It’s the place where all the i-gadgets get to re-charge up. Their master bedroom is on the main level. The original plans called for it to be a little larger, but thinking out of the box with their builder they tweaked it and made a three-season sunporch that faces that incredible view. “We love that room and use it all the time,” says Denise. In the master bath, a big walk-in tiled shower with no 40

doors was on Denise’s must-have list, and it even boasts a dry sauna. As we saunter upward, the stairs themselves have a rare feature that Denise saw in Park City. On the kick plate of each wooden stair is the tile that matches the floor by the fire. Upstairs is their fun cottage living space, knotty pine floors give a more relaxed feel, and a special carved-out kitchen nook with a Criss Craft–like wooden boat countertop. The guest rooms are simply delightful, bright and snug to make visitors feel right at home. The shabby chic–looking four-poster bed and chest in

one room was originally mahogany. Denise refinished them in soft white, and they look just darling. One window box is already designated a future toy chest for their first baby grandson, Evan, who just turned four months old. Up here is also an adorable country cottage bathroom, complete with a soaking tub. Paul’s office also resides up here, too; if you have to work, it’s better with a view, that’s for sure. On the walk back downstairs, a last look around drew my eye to a little sign in the living room, “Unwind – come on in, pour yourself a glass of wine and sit by the fire.”

These are my kind of people, and now here is Denise and Paul’s story. “Just a little background of how we selected this area to build our retirement home. Many years ago I imported Paul to Harbor Springs, Michigan, while I was one of the managers of Stafford's Pier Restaurant. We married at the small chapel on top of Boyne Highlands in 1979. Our son, Matthew, was born in Petoskey. (He now resides in Northern Virginia with his wife, Jenn, and his son, Evan.) years we circled back to Northern Michigan. We have traveled all over the world and we have never found a location we love as much as Northern Michigan. We love the four seasons and all the amenities this area has to offer. We snow ski, so winter up here is a wonderland for us. We have property in Harbor Springs, but decided to build closer to the Traverse City area for access to a real airport. Paul is now consulting for a company in Washington, D.C., and primarily works from home, but travels around the world for business. We have close friends who live on Lake Leelanau and told them about our search for a place to build. They showed us their brother’s home in Suttons Bay. While visiting his home, I noticed a piece of property next door for sale with a view of the Bay and only one mile from the Village of Suttons Bay. We fell in love and bought the property. We soon secured David Hanawalt as our architect, and he introduced us to our builder, FL Padella. After living in Northern Virginia and working in Washington, D.C., for 20 years, we were so excited to be back in Northern Michigan, a place we always considered home. We started our adventure to build our first custom home. I met Sandy from Bay Cabinetry while on one of the many Home Tours in the area. My sister, Linda McNamara, is a kitchen designer from downstate, and she designed the kitchen working directly with Sandy and her staff at Bay Cabinetry. Sandy also helped me with the interior design. We could not have had a better team! Working with Frank and Micheline Padella and with Bay Cabinetry made our building experience awesome. You always hear about the nightmares of custom building, but we never experienced that! We moved in during the record-breaking snowfall of 2014! That was our true test to see if we had what it takes to live back up north! We passed the test! We don't miss the D.C. beltway or the traffic, that is for sure. We truly love our home and the area. We love to hike, bike, sail, kayak, jetski and snow ski, so we are never at a loss for things to do. Paul is a small wooden boat builder, so he has made friends with the folks at Inland Seas and the Maritime Heritage Alliance. Along with re-uniting with old friends, we found that living in a small town makes it so much easier to cultivate new friends and we have. We are so thankful for all the new relationships we have here. We found this to be an area full of over-achievers who just want a little slower pace in life and to enjoy nature.
