om Hello fr ! Debra

T

here's a very personal reason this issue is dedicated to self-care and natural healing. For over ten years, I struggled with a bothersome health issue—rashes of very itchy red “dots” that would appear randomly on my torso, each “dot” ten times itchier than any mosquito bite I’ve ever had. I went to doctors who gave me medicines to help relieve the itching, but no cure. Over this past year, the rashes became worse, appearing also on my arms and legs. The fierce itchiness disturbed my ability to concentrate, to sleep, and my overall wellbeing. I went to more doctors, even a specialist, who suggested I take a daily pill for the itching (“For the rest of my life??” I asked) and use a prescribed steroid cream on the itch (“All over my body??” I asked again). Everything they suggested was drugs to suppress the symptoms, rather than finding the cause. Many times I told them, “MY BODY IS TRYING TO TELL ME SOMETHING!” It was, and I knew it. When it comes to our bodies, we can be very “in tune” if we pay attention. My intuition told me it had to do with what I was putting into my body, and that it might have something to do with gluten, the protein found in non-organic wheat and related grains. I asked to be tested for celiac disease (related to gluten-sensitivity), and the results were negative (fortunately). But I still had the feeling that gluten/wheat sensitivity was the issue. I did my own research and realized that, in the last decade or so, much of the wheat is dowsed in herbicides before harvesting to produce a bigger crop. So, in addition to eating more organic and non-GMO, I began eating gluten-free...and within weeks, the rashes disappeared! In today’s world, toxins are everywhere—in our food, water, air, and cleaning/personal care products—and many people are discovering sensitivities to them. Our body is amazing, but it can only eliminate so much of what doesn’t belong; otherwise symptoms appear, and each one is a wakeup call telling us something is going on. This issue of BYOU is my effort to use my experience to encourage you to consider what you are putting into your body and on it. We have exclusive interviews with amazingly-aware girls like actress Ella Anderson, activist Rachel Parent, and sisters Marlee and Karlee Roberts about their film Little Miss Perfect that I trust will open your mind to making smart choices when it comes to your body. Our bodies are beautiful and valuable, and it’s essential we honor them with selfcare and self-love. For as Meghan Trainor sings, “Every inch of you is perfect, from the bottom to the top!” With much love and care for your wellbeing, and from my Heartlight to yours,

ositive self-esteem develops when a girl is healthy in all ways—in mind, body, and spirit, a.k.a. mentally, physically, and emotionally. This issue is dedicated to the importance of honoring your body with good health and self-care, and respecting yourself with self-love and acceptance. Our goal is that you become best friends with your body and yourself! You might be thinking, “I’m already friends with myself!” But consider this: Would you tell your best friend that she’s ugly or not good enough? by Debra Gano Would you encourage her to eat or drink something that could bring her harm, either now or in the future? Would you tell her it’s okay to neglect things that are good for her, like sleep, quiet time, exercise, nutrition, or getting fresh air and sunshine? Probably not, right? You want what’s best for her, of course. But are you saying and doing things that are best for YOU?? It’s time that you want what’s best for you, too – and not just for a day, but every day. Life is busy, we know, and finding time to take extra steps to take better care of you may seem challenging. What's the best way a girl can LOVE AND HONOR HER BODY? BYOU Magazine asks some of your fave celebs...

Photo: Craig Sjodin/Disney Channel

“It's so important to love and cherish the body we have been given! Every body is different, but every body is beautiful. Don't compare to others, enjoy what you have and always send yourself love and words of affirmation.” FAVE HEALTHY HABITS: I adore yoga, it has changed my life for the better. I also drink lots of water, and always have a water bottle with me to stay hydrated! SELF-CARE TIP: To love our bodies, we have to take care of them. Eating things from the earth that make us feel good and give us strength in life is the best thing for your body and soul. Veronica stars as Marisa on the Disney Channel series K.C. UNDERCOVER.

Haley stars as Pepper in Nickelodeon’s series BELLA AND THE BULLDOGS.

“Loving yourself and your body is one of those things that can be easier said than done, but with a mix of positive self-talk and respect for oneself you will get there in no time.” FAVE HEALTHY HABITS: When I'm working it can be hard to stay on top of healthy eating but I try my best to make good choices! I also accompany that with running in the evening or any physical exercise that gets me out of the house so I can get fresh air and clear my head. SELF-CARE TIP: Always remember, you deserve the feeling of loving yourself just as much as anyone else, so keep pushing forward. Karan stars as Ravi in Disney Channel’s JESSIE spin-off comedy series BUNK’D.

“Loving your body isn't easy, especially when society has a certain image of what is 'acceptable'. However, learning to love your body is vital in accepting who you are. It's imperative to know that everybody is different, but those differences shape who we are. If people love you, great; but if not, who cares? Altering yourself for someone else will never satisfy you, but if you just be yourself, you will certainly shine.” FAVE HEALTHY HABITS: I drink a ton of water in the morning; it’s beneficial to your digestive system and skin. To make it more appealing, I love putting berries, lemons, or blending it with dates. SELF-CARE TIP: Whenever I'm feeling unhealthy or groggy I do stretches or Pilates. Staying flexible is a great way to feel energized and happy. I also feel best when I nourish my body with foods like fruits and vegetables—it makes a huge difference in your whole body!

“A quote I love is: ‘Love yourself. You are a gift.’ It’s so important for girls at any age to accept and love who they are. In this day and age, it's hard for girls to love themselves and not compare themselves to others. We were all made to be different and unique. Strive to be the best version of you that you can be.” FAVE HEALTHY HABIT: Soda and other sugary drinks contain a lot of empty calories, so every day I drink a lot of water—it’s really good for your skin and hair. In addition to staying physically fit, it's just as important to stay mentally fit! One of my passions is reading, it really helps inspire my creative side. The more I read, the more I'm inspired to write my own stories. It’s also important to spend some time away from your phone/iPad/computer each day! SELF-CARE TIP: Getting involved in a sport at school is a fun idea to staying healthy—anything from cheerleading to cross country running will help you stay active and it is a great way to make new friends.

"Stop comparing yourself to others. This is sometimes difficult given that social media is such a constant in our lives, but everyone has their own journey and comparing yours to someone else’s isn’t relevant or fair. You are the only YOU there is and you are beautiful, unique, and amazing.” FAVE HEALTHY HABITS: I am not a fan of the gym, so my favorite way to get exercise in is a good yoga class—it’s so good for your mental and physical health! I try to eat healthy foods every day and limit junk food—it makes me feel so much better. SELF-CARE TIP: I always feel more energized and overall much happier after a good workout. Getting motivated to work out is much easier if you find something you enjoy doing for exercise so you look forward to doing it. It can be tricky to get enough sleep with the pressures of school and temptation of Netflix, but if you turn your screens off at a set time every night and get enough sleep, it will make you feel so much better, both physically and emotionally.

SOPHIE REYNOLDS

Sophie stars as Ashley in Disney XD’s live-action series GAMER’S GUIDE TO PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING.

Aidan stars as Lawrence on Nickelodeon's series SCHOOL OF ROCK.

“Don’t let anyone lower your self-confidence. If someone points out your flaws, just let them know you're cool with your ‘flawsomeness’. You can't be anyone else, so go ahead and like yourself for who you are—inside and out.” FAVE HEALTHY HABIT: I try to wash my face every morning and night. Sometimes at night I get into my video game and forget to do that and I can really tell the difference. It really helps with acne and it’s a great daily habit along with brushing your teeth ;) SELF-CARE TIP: Take a shower every day; it will wake you up with a clean start to your morning and give you a chance to cool down after a long day. Also take time every day to just hang out with yourself—think, pray, or meditate, whatever works for you—so you get to know how cool you are!

“Accept yourself as you are and realize that you are more than just a number on a scale. You're more than your height, your weight, and physical appearance. Your health comes first. Variety is beautiful! Don't compare yourself to anyone—you are unique. Own it!” FAVE HEALTHY HABITS: Drinking water is best to keep your body healthy, hydrated, and glowing. Stay active; whether it's in the gym or dancing like nobody's watching. Do it for you! SELF-CARE TIP: Put your health first, have moderation, and don't be afraid to take some "me" time every once in a while. Love yourself, because after all, the only person you will spend the rest of your life with is you! Maria stars as Talia in the Nickelodeon show TALIA IN THE KITCHEN.

MARIA QUEZADA

“Beauty is only skin deep, it's what's in your heart that matters. Be yourself. You don't need to be accepted by others, you just need to accept yourself. You are a perfect beauty!” FAVE HEALTHY HABITS: I love fitness, like cycling and kick boxing. Staying active and drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated are important for a healthy body. I generally wash my hair twice a week; it has the tendency to be dry, so I mix an avocado with a little olive oil for deep conditioning (hint: stay away from the roots). It makes your hair naturally silky and shiny! SELF-CARE TIP: Never compare yourself to others; envy robs you of finding your true place in life. Surround yourself with your "true" friends, they are priceless. And eat a lot of greens and fruits, they will make you feel better and your skin look great. Madisyn stars as Kenzie in Nickelodeon’s sitcom GAME SHAKERS.

MADISYN SHIPMAN

“You are one of a kind. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Focus on being your best self.” FAVE HEALTHY HABITS: I drink smoothies almost every day. I love them! I love strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and chocolate protein powder. SELF-CARE TIP: Find an activity that you love. Being active makes the body feel good. Take walks in the sunshine! “Love yourself and don’t compare yourself to others , especially those on social media. Embrace ALL of you, that’s what makes you unique—it’s what makes you, YOU!” FAVE HEALTHY HABIT: Wearing makeup consecutively can cause breakouts, so each week I find a day to give my face a break and not wear makeup. It’s a great way to let your face breathe! SELF-CARE TIP: Have a balanced diet and exercise. Eating food that takes care of you on the inside and outside makes you feel good and can boost your mood! Exercising is a great stress reliever; if I have a lot on my mind or I’m starting to stress out, exercising is my go-to.

Ysa Penarejo

Ysa stars as Camryn on Netflix’s hit show PROJECT MC².

“It's very important to love and accept the person you are. Don’t let other people affect the way you feel about yourself–block out those haters! Everyone’s shape is different, making us unique. Be confident in who you are. You do you, girl!” FAVE HEALTHY HABITS: I try to eat sugar only on weekends. When I want to satisfy my sweet tooth on weekdays, I look up sugar-free recipes online (you wouldn’t believe how many good ones there are; my fave is a dark chocolate crisp bar). I also wash my face every day to clean off any dirt or makeup to keep those darn pimples away! SELF-CARE TIP: Find an exercise that’s fun for you. For me, I love going to a dance class, playing tennis, or going for a run. I also I try to get my beauty sleep. When I’m working out and getting sleep, it’s crazy how much better I feel and how much energy I have!

hen your schedule "The first wealth is busy and you’re is health." focusing on your - Ralph Waldo Emerson responsibilities, it's important to remember to focus on yourself too. You have a responsibility to take care of you and your own wellbeing; in doing so, you will be better able to take care of what needs to be done. If you are ever feeling overwhelmed, don't stress—that’s the worst thing you can do. Stress has many mental and physical effects that can be a huge detriment and even a danger to you. It's essential that you take a breath and find your own way to de-stress. Take a moment at the beginning of each week to look ahead and find a system to manage your time effectively. It helps to find an outlet to blow off some steam and help you relax and re-center yourself, like working out, meditation, sports, art, a hobby, or even a good old fashioned walk. It's important to take care of yourself physically too. Find ways to stay active—it will help your body maintain energy as well as keep you healthy. 10 WAYS TO INCLUDE SELF-CARE INTO YOUR LIFE EVERY DAY by Julia Schemmer

Students balance a lot—school, homework, extracurricular activities, chores, to name a few. So in the midst of all you do, remember to take time and space for your own personal care —your body, mind, and spirit will be happy you did!

1) PUT POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS ON YOUR PHONE. Sometimes we all need a reminder of our inner worth, so create ten “compliments” to yourself (i.e. I am smart!) and set them as alarms on your phone to go off at random times of the day to feel immediately uplifted! 2) MAKE A LIST OF THINGS YOU ENJOY. When we’re stressed, it can be easy to lose sight of what we enjoy doing. To combat feeling burnt out, make a list of things you enjoy—from talking to your mom to visiting botanical gardens—to remind yourself of what makes you happiest. 3) FIND A FURRY FRIEND. Animals are used for therapy for a reason— there’s something about petting a loving animal that melts your stress away. If you feel stressed, take a moment to hug and appreciate your pet. If you don’t have pets, volunteer at an animal shelter or offer to care for a neighbor’s pet; not only are you helping furry friends in need, but they are helping you live a happier life. 4) COLOR! Coloring is more popular than ever again (even with grownups!) because it’s a great way to relieve stress. All you need are coloring pages, crayons/color pencils/markers, and 5-10 minutes to relax and make something beautiful! (Try the coloring sheet on page 43!) 5) SEEK SUPPORT. When you have a difficult situation and don’t know the best decision to make, talk to a trusted friend, family member, or teacher to help make the right choice. Reaching out can be difficult, but you won’t be sorry you did. When you let other people into your life, you benefit from the experiences and advice they have to offer. 14

BYOUMAGAZINE.COM

6) DRINK LOTS OF WATER. You can’t “pour” into others if you aren’t pouring into yourself in healthy ways! By drinking water and committing to a healthy lifestyle, you will notice yourself feeling more active, uplifted, and ready to tackle any task! (For more about the benefits of water, see page 28) 7) MAKE PLAYLISTS. Fill your head with positive thoughts by creating a playlist of songs that gets you moving and grooving— the endorphins released during exercise help reduce stress and boost your mood! Also create a playlist of relaxing tunes (like meditation or classical music) to help unwind after a long day. 8) WATCH A TED TALK. TED Talks are short inspiring videos featuring both ordinary people and celebrities who speak about an idea they are passionate about. Most talks are only 15 minutes long, making it the perfect mental break between studying while still stimulating your mind. 9) JOURNAL. Sometimes the best release comes from writing what purely comes from your heart. Don’t worry about sounding articulate or fancy. Be honest and genuine with your thoughts and emotions, like writing about what happened in your day and how it made you feel. 10) WALK AROUND. If you feel overwhelmed, take a walk outside and enjoy nature’s beauty. Sometimes getting out of your current environment can help release frustrations. Watch a butterfly, notice changing leaves, or study clouds—nature, fresh air, and sunshine can be very healing!

SLEEPING

ZZZ-ECRETS

The Secret to Being Your BEST YOU is Right in Your Own Bedroom!

One of the most important “self-care” things you can do is get enough sleep. Whether you’re performing a sport, taking a math test, or just hanging with friends, the quantity of sleep you get determines the quality of what you’re doing. Sleeping might seems like a lot of time doing “nothing”, but you’re actually doing SO much—like resting and detoxifying your body and brain—so it’s essential to take your time on your pillow seriously.

Zzz-ecrets For Good Sleep • Stop using electronics at least one hour before bedtime and keep them away from your bed while you sleep. Electronics— from televisions to cell phones—give off blue light, which stops the release of melatonin (the natural chemical needed to sleep) in your brain. • Sleep in darkness. A small night light is OK, but use a low-watt yellow, red, or orange bulb that won’t disturb your sleep. Too much light signals your brain it’s time to wake up (eye masks work great to block out light!) • Get sunshine during the day. Darkness during the day and lightness at night can hurt our body’s biological clock. We need lots of sunlight during the day and darkness at night for optimum sleep. • Take a warm bath or shower before bed. Body temperature naturally falls at bedtime, facilitating slumber. The temperature drop from getting out of the bath signals your body it's time for bed. • Avoid before-bed snacks, especially sugars. Food before bed gives your body unnecessary energy. Instead, have a warm cup of herbal tea, like peppermint or chamomile with a little honey. • Use essential oils to relax. A few drops of relaxing oil, like lavender, in a warm bath or on a cotton ball in your pillow case will help naturally relax you (see page 35 for more essential oil ideas!) • Avoid stimulating your brain before bed. That means not watching TV, checking Instagram, doing homework, or reading a suspenseful book. Rather, read something inspiring (like BYOU Magazine!), journal, or listen to soothing music or guided meditations. • Keep a set bedtime. Going to bed and waking up at the same times each day (even on the weekends) helps your body get into a sleep rhythm so it’s easier to fall asleep and get up in the morning! How much is “enough” sleep? 7-13 years: 9-11 hours per night 14-17 years: 8-10 hours per night

What’s Wrong with Me??

Lack of sleep affects your body. Here’s how: • It greatly increases your chances of getting sick. During sleep your body fights off bacteria and germs, so getting enough sleep keeps your immune system strong (so you can skip that flu shot!) • It slows brain function. Memory and learning skills are impaired if your brain doesn’t have a chance to rest while you sleep. Want to think clearly? Get enough sleep! • It magnifies emotions. When brain function slows, emotions speed up. Being overtired can lead to silliness, but often it’s negative emotions like anger, fear, and sadness that increase. Feeling down? Maybe you didn’t get enough sleep last night. • It limits your reaction time. Everyday activities like riding your bike, playing sports, or even walking can be affected—you could even be more accident-prone if you don’t snooze enough at night. • It increases hunger. If you don’t give your body a chance to refuel enough at night it will crave more food the next day, leading to unhealthy snacking throughout the day!

Perfect pressure to be

An exclusive interview with Marlee and Karlee Roberts about their film Little Miss Perfect

Have you ever felt pressure to be perfect? A new film,

^ not

Little Miss Perfect, chronicles the life of 14-year-old Belle, an overambitious straight-A freshman and president of her class. Belle seems to have it altogether, but as family trouble and daily social academic pressures grow, she seeks a way to control her chaotic world. Triggered by a blog promoting anorexia and other eating disorders, Belle drops down to an unhealthy weight that harms both her physical and emotional well-being.

Belle is played by Karlee Roberts, who you may remember as one of BYOU Magazine’s “Girls Making a Difference” a few years ago for her nationwide anti-bullying tour featuring her song Call Me Whatever. Today, Karlee is 17 and the youngest student at New York’s Columbia University, entering her junior year as a film student. She’s bringing attention to the important topic of eating disorders thanks to her older sister Marlee Roberts, a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Film & TV program. Marlee is the writer and director of Little Miss Perfect (her debut film), and the most impressive part? Marlee is only 23 years old! Recently BYOU Magazine founder and editor, Debra Gano, had a chance to catch up with Marlee and Karlee about Little Miss Perfect. In this exclusive interview, the talented sister-duo offers valuable insight as to how to know if you have an unhealthy relationship with your body and how to develop a more loving one… MARLEE & KARLEE: Thank you for inviting us to speak on behalf of some very difficult but important subjects. We are glad to hear that you are bringing to light the importance of honoring yourself/your body and self-love. We love BYOU Magazine for that reason and we are honored to be incorporated into this issue. BYOU: We are honored to feature you both! Marlee, what prompted you to create Little Miss Perfect? MARLEE: Little Miss Perfect began first as an adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, borrowing Belle’s studious perfectionist nature and combining it with the Beast’s shame and temper. Similar to the original story, Little Miss Perfect’s Belle was given a father who sets off on a work venture, a mother who is out of the picture, and a confident, bordering-on-arrogant suitor. However, as I worked on the screenplay, it transformed into its own story. While not completely autobiographical, I wrote the character of Belle from my personal experience in high school struggling with similar themes I realized many girls are facing: social exclusion, academic pressure, body image, and family disconnection. The film tells the story of a high school freshman who struggles to control her life by controlling her weight. This need for “control” led me to research the psychological and behavioral effects of those who deal with similar issues. I worked with two clinical psychologists specializing in the psychology of eating disorders, particularly in adolescents, and they oversaw the script. I spent about two years writing the screenplay and we filmed the following summer.

BYOU: Karlee, how did it feel to play Belle and star in a movie with such an important message? 16

BYOUMAGAZINE.COM

KARLEE: It was really fun, but also intense. I loved building Belle's studious and motivated personality as well as exploring her flaws. I brought out the parts of me that most resemble Belle – as someone who never wants to disappoint anyone – and learned from creating her character that it is impossible to live up to everyone's different standards and definitions of perfect…including the unreasonable standards we sometimes set for ourselves. For Belle and many other girls whose “beasts” might be related to body image or eating disorders, it’s not just about being thin; it’s much more complex and psychological in nature. BYOU: How does a girl know if she has an unhealthy relationship with her body? MARLEE: Of course it's important to stay fit and eat healthy, but when you obsess over your appearance so often that it begins to affect your daily life in a way that hinders you from doing what you love or need to do, it is a strong sign that you have an unhealthy relationship with your body. This also ties into obsessing over how others perceive you; being too preoccupied with how others view you could lead to a very unhealthy relationship with your body directly stemming from your sense of self. It all comes down to finding and maintaining balance.

Actress Karlee Roberts (left) working on set with her sister, director Marlee Roberts.

BYOU: What advice can you offer girls who feel ugly and not good enough on how to truly love and accept themselves and their body? MARLEE: We've all been there at some point or another so know you aren't alone. I know it's hard to believe how great you are sometimes, but remember your character (who you are) is far greater than your appearance or your achievements.

Belle gets weighed by the school nurse.

KARLEE: We all have some sort of insecurity that sometimes overwhelms us and inhibits us to be our full, wonderful selves. We have to face this beast. Our beast is the highest unobtainable version of our idealized self. This haunting beast we construct in our minds can be so powerful that we physically and emotionally believe we aren’t that “perfect” person. And we will keep taking it out on ourselves until we realize that the beast will always be there and that the best thing we can do is accept it and learn how to live with it. BYOU: What can you say to help girls handle the pressures to be perfect? MARLEE: "For the longest time I tried to be perfect, because I thought making even one little mistake meant disappointing the people who love me..." In Little Miss Perfect, Belle says this line and it's one of my favorites because, even after watching the film over a Belle receives dirty looks as she walks the school hallway. hundred times, it still resonates with me as I struggle with feeling extreme pressures today. For me, this feeling first started around middle school. Writing out how I felt helped relieve the pressure and stress. After a while, I realized most of the pressure wasn't even coming from other people—I was being hard on myself. Belle wants to be a straight A student, class president, get into a good college, have popular friends, make her parents proud, and so on; but at the end of the day, she lost control of herself by trying to make everyone else happy. It is only when she takes time for herself and does what she wants to do, that she finds peace within herself and her body. BODY TI P?

POSITIVE BODY IMAGE When you think of an advocate for “positive body image”, one of the fave celebs that come to mind is Meghan Trainor—and for good reason! The 22-yearold’s rise to fame as a singer happened in an unconventional way. She started off as a songwriter because she felt that “chubby girls” Meghan Trainor couldn’t be pop stars. But when she played All About in concert. That Bass for a record label, they signed her that day! Meghan’s songs climb to #1 on the charts, many with lyrics that influence girls and women in positive ways. Lyrics like “every inch of you is perfect, from the bottom to the top” express that you’re perfect the way you are. While growing up, Meghan didn’t “fit in”. She shares, “It’s hard growing up, especially for young curvy girls like me. I remember shopping at the mall and all my friends would be the small, and I would be getting that [size] L. I couldn’t even shop at particular stores.”* Today, Meghan is a proud supporter of body acceptance. When her Me Too music video was released, Meghan quickly pulled it from media sites because her body had been altered without her knowledge. Images of her dancing while singing the lyrics “I can’t help loving myself” were digitally altered to make her look thinner. Meghan wanted her fans to see her for who she truly was without editing, curves and all. You go, Meghan!

An Exclusive Interview with BYOU Magazine Publisher/Editor Debra Gano 20

ou may know Ella Anderson from the popular Nickelodeon series Henry Danger, where she stars as the sassy-sweet-smart tech-savvy Piper Hart. But what you may not know is how extraordinary this 11-year-old truly is. Sure, it’s super impressive that she’s been in over 20 movies and television shows even before reaching her teens (she started acting at the age of five), but that wasn’t what got our attention about this remarkable young lady.

At a very early age, Ella’s intuitive awareness ignited a spark within her to explore natural health. Growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ella had a “sense” that many items we put in and on our body every day may not be the healthiest for us, so she searched for more natural options. Her curiosity and passion fueled a hobby of making her own natural products; and recently, this hobby turned into a new business for her: a skin care line called Aiko by Ella. In this exclusive interview, BYOU Magazine publisher and editor Debra Gano chats with Ella and her mom, Rebecca, about natural products and Ella’s desire to inspire girls to make smart health choices… BYOU: Ella, we are so impressed that you have your own natural skin care line at the age of 11. How did it all start? ELLA: It’s something I’ve always done; I’ve been making skin care products since I was four. I had a little salon in my house and would make products that I was super interested in that were all natural. I’ve always cared about what I put IN my body and ON my body. So while I was filming The Boss, I was making products in my hotel room and Ella making organic my manager sugar scrub in her came in and kitchen. “There are so many natural asked what products you can I was doing. use and they work She tried the miracles!” products and suggested we meet with a lab to test everything out and went from there. It’s really cool to see Aiko

by Ella out there and people using it now. There was definitely a huge gap I wanted to fill; there was stuff for babies and adults, but nothing organic and good for people my age that was fun. I thought it was really important to have super natural and vegan stuff you can put on your body. REBECCA: Ella first became very interested in what she was eating. My cousin was a chef who was really into organic food and everything she had in her house very natural. I think Ella saw that and it always interested her. She watched documentaries about toxins in food and how they treated animals, and didn’t want to put those things in her body. Then she started learning about things she was putting on her skin (and when Ella wants to learn about something, she learns!). She started reading labels and got really serious about what she was eating and putting on her body. She started making things herself, adding my essential oils and using everyday things, saying, “Oh, we should try this in here!” When she talked about making the skin care line, she said, “I want everybody to be able to use this stuff. I want to inspire girls to make the same choices I do.”

BYOU: It’s great you’re bringing this awareness to girls so they know they have a choice as to what they put in and on their body.

Photo: Russel Baer

“I’ve always cared about what I put in my body and on my body.”

ELLA: Yeah, you definitely have a choice! It’s your only body and you have to honor the fact that you have to nourish it in the right ways. Doing all of these [harmful] things that most people do (and don’t even realize) will not benefit you in any way in the long run. So you have to make that choice, and it’s really not as hard as you think. It makes you feel 100 times better, you feel like you can do so many more things. This is something I want everybody to listen to because it’s so important to me that you find this way to your health. Everyone’s different, and has a different way to his or her health, so even though it might seem hard, you have to learn to listen to what your body is telling you. BYOU: Do you feel taking care of your body helps build your confidence and selfesteem also?

Photo: Russell Baer

BYOU: Why are you so passionate about creating and using natural products, both for yourself and other girls?

ELLA: Definitely! You feel so much more boosted. I definitely have found more of a confidence in what I’m doing and really excited every day because I am nourishing my body—and that gives me so much energy to do so many things.

“It’s important to understand what ingredients you’re using and how they can affect you.”

ELLA: There are just so many toxins, chemicals, and things that poison your skin. What you put on your skin is just as important as what goes in your body. 60% of everything applied to your skin is absorbed into the body, so it’s important to understand what ingredients you are using and how they can affect you. Read labels and look at the ingredients in products; if you can’t pronounce them, then you probably should avoid them! I have always found that really important, and I’ve tried to let people know that it’s not good. By choosing clean, green beauty products made with organic, sustainable ingredients, you’re actively making a healthful impact on your body and the earth.

22

BYOUMAGAZINE.COM

BYOU: What are some of your favorite natural ingredients?

ELLA: I use coconut oil for so many things; it’s so amazing, I use it every day on my face and hair. I put it on my eye lashes and they grow like crazy. I use it on my hair; it makes it grow really fast too. It’s a really good make-up remover too! Arnica is really good because it works miracles for sore muscles and bruising. In the Aiko by Ella products we have arnica, and we also have aloe vera, which is really good (most people know it’s really good for sunburn). Frankincense is really amazing for any skin irritation, like bug bites or things like that. Other favorite [essential oils] are lavender and peppermint. There are so many natural products that you can use and they work miracles!

BEING VEGAN Ella Anderson is a vegan, meaning she doesn’t put any animal products on or in her body. She tells us, “I have done so much research on how they treat the animals. I always thought that something that came here an animal should stay an animal.”

Photo:Russel Baer

Ella’s Mom, Rebecca, adds, “Ella is a huge animal advocate, so that was initially part of it; it just went along with the rest of living a healthy lifestyle. There are a lot of documentaries that you can watch, so thanks to Netflix, we learned a lot about how they treat animals—like what they feed cows and how they slaughtered chickens—and Ella was totally turned off by it. That’s a part of why she’s learned about healthy food and what’s in food and how it fuels your body. She had to learn about it to figure out the nutrients she needs to grow.” So is Ella’s whole family vegan? Rebecca answers with a laugh, “No, but Ella would like us to be!”

WHAT DOES ORGANIC MEAN? What did Ella Anderson do when she couldn’t find natural and organic products for girls her age? She made her own! Her passion for purity turned into a line of skin care products called Aiko by Ella, where she uses ingredients she knows are good for her. She says, “Some of my favorite ingredients are coconut oil, lavender, arnica, and peppermint. I use all of them in my Aiko by Ella products because they are the best! My favorite products are the Scrub-a-Latte coffee scrub and Soul Relief after-sun aloe gel.” Ella's middle name is Aiko, which means “love” in Japanese—how perfect, as it seems that is what Ella is all about! For more information about Ella or to order her products, visit aikobyella.com.

Plants and animals that are grown organically use traditional growing methods that promote environmental health. They do not use artificial chemicals (such as pesticides and fertilizers) or contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) of any kind.

Ingredients you WON’T find in Ella’s products: • Parabens • Propylene Glycol • Sodium Lauryl • Formaldehyde Sulfate • PABA • Petroleum • Toxic Minerals • Silicone • Heavy Metals ELLA’S TIP: Read labels and look at ingredients in products; if you can’t pronounce them, then you probably should avoid them!

"Spa Ellamentals" includes Mint Coco Clean sulfate-free body wash, Scrub-a-Latte raw coffee body scrub, and Mint Body Butter. "Lip Sink" includes Pina-Pout and Lemon-Aid lip balms and Cotton Candy Clean sugar lip scrub. "So[u]l Mates" includes So[u]l Screen sunscreen face stick and So[u]l Relief aftersun gel with vegan and natural aloe vera.

COCONUT OIL: ONE OF NATURE'S BEST GIFTS

There’s much talk today (and in this issue!) about coconut oil. Why? People are discovering that it’s one of the most useful fruits on the planet! Many cultures have benefited from coconut use for years, calling the coconut palm “the tree of life”. From cooking to hair care, coconut oil is a healthy, natural (and often, less expensive) alternative to many products you use every day! Make the switch to this amazing multi-purpose gift from nature today—here’s how: COOKING Invite the chef in your family to use coconut oil in place of vegetable and canola oils when cooking. Vegetable and canola oils likely include preservatives and GMOs (genetically modified organisms— see our story page 30). Coconut oil provides nutrients to your foods and is high in healthy saturated fats (which are good for you, btw). FACE AND BODY MOISTURIZER Many lotions have ingredients such as cetearyl alcohol, allantonin, and glyceryl dilaurate…say what? Not to mention a lot of artificial fragrances. Coconut oil is a Coconut oil doesn’t have to natural moisturizer be purchased at fancy beauty that contains one stores—it’s available at most ingredient—cocogrocery stores! MAKE-UP REMOVER According to our founder Debra Gano, a former professional model, coconut oil is the best thing to remove mascara and other makeup. She says, “It’s better than all the overpriced removers I used

to buy, plus it has no harsh chemicals!” Try it yourself to see how makeup melts away!

Making your own health products gives you control over what you put on and in your body and helps you avoid harsh chemicals. See ideas for products you can make yourself using coconut oil on page 37!

HAIR CARE An itchy scalp or dandruff can be super annoying, so during your shower (before shampooing) massage a small amount of coconut oil into a dry scalp a few times a week to moisturize it and keep it dandruff/itch-free. Coconut oil acts as a great deep conditioner for dry ends and tames frizz too!

TEETH CARE Ever try oil pulling? Swish a tablespoon of coconut oil around in your mouth 10-15 minutes a day to help prevent cavities and keep gums healthy. Extra bonus? Teeth are whiter without use of bleach or chemicals! Your Easiest Healthy Habit:

Drinking Water I f you read our “Ask the Stars” section, you’ll notice that one fave healthy habit many of the stars mention is that they drink lots of water. Drinking water is more than just a good idea; you actually need it to survive (like all living things do!). Water makes up more than half of your body weight, and while you can go weeks without food (it’s true!), you can't go more than a few days without water. There is no arguing that water is important…the body needs it to function, plus it improves how we feel and look!

The best option is always filtered water. Not only does it taste so much better, but it’s so much better for you! Water filters remove far more contaminants than any other purification method and provide the healthiest solution to the problems of both tap water and bottled water (see section about bottled water). There are many filter options out there, including pitchers and water bottles that filter MORNING TIP: water. How Much is Enough?

There are many opinions on how much water you should drink, but generally eight glasses a day is a good guideline. If you're sweating from heat or exercise, you'll definitely need more. If your water intake does not equal your output, you can become dehydrated. Hydration cannot come from any other source but water, so don't think other beverages count towards your daily quota of water!

Your Body is Telling You Something Got a headache? Can’t think straight? Feeling tired, achy, or nauseous? Before you run to the medicine cabinet, drink a full glass of water! Your body may be telling you it needs more water. When you are dehydrated, your body (and mind) can’t perform as well and ill symptoms may appear. Pay attention to your body; when you feel thirsty, it’s telling you to drink water. How else does your body tell you if it needs more water? Check your toilet. Yup, that’s right. Your pee and poop give you good indicators if you’re drinking What's in enough water. Ideally YOUR your pee should be a Toilet? pale yellow color and your stools should be soft (but not loose). If what is staring back at you is dark yellow pee or hard stools, you need to be drinking more water!

The Problem with Bottled Water

Everyone seems to carry bottled water everywhere they go these days. It’s awesome that people are hydrating (and choosing water over soda!), but bottled water does have its downsides. Its popularity creates huge amounts of plastic bottles being dumped into our environment, which allows chemicals like phthalates to leech into the ground, our water, and our bodies. These toxins cause many health risks, including cancer. Consuming water in plastic bottles (or any other drink or food stored in plastic) can also leak toxins into the body, especially if exposed to heat. See our tips below for safe drinking water!

Safe Drinking Water Tips • Invest in a good water filter. At a minimum, use a pitcher or bottle with a built-in filter; ideally, use a reverse osmosis filtration system in your home (might be a great holiday gift for the whole family!) • Refill your own bottles using filtered water. Use glass or stainless steel bottles if possible. If using plastic bottles, look for ones that are BPA-free (like BYOU Magazine water HYDRATION TIP: bottles!) Look for highFruits and veggies quality natural spring have high water or artesian water if content so eating buying bottled water more of them helps (some bottled waters keep you hydrated. are just tap water!) • Do not heat water (or food) in plastic containers. • Do not let plastic bottles sit in the sun (or a hot car) • Take your own water bottle with filtered water with you wherever you go, including school and restaurants where they might not offer filtered water. • Become aware! Research the dangers of consuming fluoride, chromium-6, heavy metals, and other toxins found in unfiltered water. • Become an advocate! Help others to live healthier by sharing your knowledge of safe water tips!

achel Parent is not your average teenage girl. She’s not drawn to clothing labels; she’s drawn to food labels. Five years ago, Rachel became alarmed by what she learned about GMOs (genetically modified organisms). A GMO is the result of a laboratory process where genes from one species are artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. This concern prompted her to take action, and she created Kids Right to Know, a not-for-profit organization to inform the public, especially other children, about food safety and the environment. A high school student in Toronto, Canada, Rachel has done numerous television, radio, magazine, and online interviews. She’s worked with world leaders in the food safety movement and has been a speaker at many events around the world. Now Magazine named Rachel one of Toronto’s Environmental Heroes and the National Post recognized her as Canada’s Top 20 under 20 Change Makers. She’s also one of many contributors to the book Global Chorus, 365 Voices on the Future of the Planet featuring words by Dr. Jane Goodall, Nelson Mandela, and the Dalai Lama to name a few. When CBC’s TV Host Kevin O’Leary (Shark Tank, Dragon’s Den) suggested on his Lang & O’Leary Exchange show that people who stand against GMOs

Exclusive Interview with

should “stop eating” so we can “get rid of them”, Rachel was outraged and challenged him to a debate. O’Leary agreed, and the debate was posted on YouTube – gaining almost 8 million views! Not easily intimidated, Rachel then confronted the CEO of Monsanto Corporation, the largest producer of GMO seeds and chemical herbicide, with serious questions related to the lack of transparency on the safety of GMOs. She’s also met with Canada’s top health officials and scientists about the need for mandatory GMO labeling on food. Rachel, now 17, continues to research, educate, and motivate others in schools and at public events around the world about GMOs and the protection of the environment—her motto is “One planet for all, all for one planet.” We’re sure you can see why we are excited to share with you our exclusive interview with this truly remarkable young woman! BYOU: Rachel, what started your passion to bring awareness to the public about GMOs? RACHEL: In grade 6 I had to do a speech about something we thought was interesting, so I researched issues I was passionate about, including poverty, deforestation, animal cruelty, and our food system. In researching our food system, I found out about GMOs. Genetic modification of plants and animals contaminates our beautiful world, and they are patented and owned by corporations who care more about profits than human health and the environment. They rule a large percentage of the food system that impacts the entire world and pollute our soil, water, and air with chemical pesticides and herbicides. This contributes to the dying off of our bees and butterflies (which affects food security “My organization, Kids Right to Know, increases awareness about because they GMOs and the risks associated are pollinators with them, and works to demand mandatory GMO labeling for all the responsible products that unsuspecting parents for 1 in 3 bites are feeding their families.” (Rachel of food we eat in Vermont, the first—and only—U.S. every day), the state to pass a mandatory GMO labeling law)

cutting of the rainforest, new super weeds and super bugs, and lack of biodiversity in which we need to sustain our planet. When I learned about this problem it really scared me; but my fear “When I first heard about GMOs, I was turned to passion, confused and angry. I learned I was part of a big science experiment.” and my passion turned to a need to try to create a better planet for future generations. BYOU: How much of our food is genetically modified (GM), and why should we be concerned? RACHEL: About 75% of the processed food in North America contains genetically modified ingredients including corn, canola, soy, and sugar from sugar beets. We also have produce—such as the new GM arctic apple (it doesn't brown for up to 28 days), Hawaiian papaya, yellow squash and zucchini—and the first genetically modified animal, the salmon, which is engineered to grow much faster and larger with DNA from an eel-like fish. GMOs are in a large majority of kid’s snacks and meals—for example, in granola bars there’s a high chance you will see at least three ingredients that have probably been genetically modified. GMOs have never been proven safe by the FDA or Health Canada and they rely only on studies provided by the companies that make the crops. GMOs have been linked to many damaging health risks, such as digestive disorders, allergies, organ damage, tumors, infertility, and damaged immune systems. There is no way to be able to track adverse or allergic reactions to GMOs if there is no labelling of them on food products. Our government has come to the conclusion that these foods do not have to be proven safe, but instead have to be proven unsafe. Shouldn't our government be looking out for our health and trying to do everything possible to ensure the food we eat multiple times a day will be nutritious and benefit our body, instead of harming it? BYOU: Given that GMOs are not good for us, why do you believe they are allowed in the majority of our food?

BYOUMAGAZINE.COM  31

RACHEL: GMOs have been allowed into our food system because of a large amount of lobbying on behalf of the biotech corporations or as they call themselves the “modern agriculture companies”. They were fraudulently and silently introduced into our food system without the consumer’s knowledge of the issue. Sometimes I wonder why chemical companies are in charge of our food supply. BYOU: What can we do collectively to ensure that our food is safe and healthy? RACHEL: We all have to start shopping conscientiously by supporting the companies that believe in non-GMO and organic practices. If you can, it is amazing to find and support local non-GMO or organic farmers. By standing by these farmers who are dedicated to preserving our land and resources, you are helping to create a healthier future for our planet and for future generations. It is up to us whether we make this planet a better place, as every bite counts. BYOU: Why is it important for a girl, in honoring her body, to be mindful of the food she eats? RACHEL: The old saying goes, “You are what you eat.” It’s important for our generation to understand the importance of food, where it came from, to Rachel, a 4th generation vegetarian, grows much of her own read ingredient food and suggests eating organic labels, and to when possible. avoid genetically modified ingredients such as corn, canola, soy, and vegetable oil for maintaining optimum health. Every food in its raw form was created with nutrients to benefit our bodies; for example, kiwis have vitamin C, bananas have potassium, and papaya has digestive properties. This is why we need to start making our own homemade meals which is less processed and will have the most nutrients possible. We often take for granted what a miracle our food is, and I truly wish our education system would emphasize teaching our youth about the incredible impacts our food has on our health and the environment.

WHY NOT US? BYOU: How can you encourage kids to become aware of what needs to change and then take action about something they are passionate about? RACHEL: In growing up, we labeling is mandatory in over often believe that “GMO 60 countries around the world, but our leaders (such not in the USA or Canada. So my question is: WHY NOT US?” as politicians and people of influence) are looking after our best interests, but unfortunately that’s not always the case. We are facing a very different and difficult time right now, more than our parents ever did. When we witness issues that touch our heart deeply, such as climate change, ocean acidification, factory farming, animal cruelty, deforestation, or genetic modification of our food, it’s more important than ever that we don't hesitate to take action and create the change we want to see. We must all find our true purpose in this world and act on our passions. “We are supposed to have the We have to right to know what’s in our food understand that and the right to choose what we we can no longer eat. Somewhere along the line, wait for someone that was taken from us...without asking or even telling us. I’m part else to fight for of the movement to get that back.” our future. WHAT’S A GMO?

A GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) is a laboratory process of taking genes from one species and inserting them into another in an attempt to obtain a desired trait—like herbicide-tolerance crops, which lets the farmer spray weed killers directly on the crop without killing it, and pesticide-producing crops, where the plant produces its own internal pesticide. WHAT FOODS ARE GM? • Corn, soy, cotton, canola, sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, zucchini and yellow squash, alfalfa, potato. • Products derived from the above, like soy protein, soy lecithin, cornstarch, corn syrup, and high fructose corn syrup—also oils from these products, like canola oil and vegetable oil. • Approximately 90% of all products on supermarket shelves contain GMO ingredients. HOW CAN YOU AVOID GMOS? • Read labels and avoid buying processed food products containing corn, soy, canola, and vegetable oil. • Many foods offer organic options; buy these whenever possible • Look for the NONGMO Project label on products. • Educate yourself—and your family—about GMOs; non-GMO shopping guides can be found online. • Grow your own food using nonGMO seeds and organic practices. • Ask restaurants to serve organic/ non-GMO food and support those that do (like Chipotle)! Jane Goodall: Encouraging Hope for Humanity

You may have heard of the “chimpanzee lady”, Dr. Jane Goodall, a renowned primatologist best known for her 45 years of studying and living among chimpanzees in Tanzania. Yet her lifetime work encompasses more than protecting endangered species and their habitats; she’s been a world advocate for many humanitarian and environmental causes. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute to encourage others to do Dr. Jane Goodall (left) as a featured their part to make a difference, as guest for “Inspiring Youth to Take Action” panel discussion well as its Roots and Shoots promoderated by Kids Right to Know gram that connects youth in more founder Rachel Parent (right). than 130 countries who take action to create a better world for people, animals, and the environment. Dr. Goodall has received much well-deserved acknowledgement for her hard work, including being appointed as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. She travels an average of 300 days per year (BTW, she’s 82 years old!), speaking about hope that humankind will solve the problems it has imposed on the earth. Here is what she has to say about a few (of many) topics important to her… BEING VEGETARIAN: “I [learned about animal factories and] found it hard to believe people could treat animals this way, as though they’re just machines to produce more meat quickly and, therefore, sell it cheaper. The next time I looked at a piece of meat on my plate, I thought, ‘What does this symbolize? Fear? Pain? Death?’ I never ate it again. The average person doesn’t have a clue the effect the meat they’re eating has on human cells. [Farm animals] are far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined…they deserve our respect and help. If you must eat any animal products they must be free range and organic.” GMOs: “How could we believe that it was a good idea to grow our food with poisons? Genetically modified foods are unacceptably risky, deceptively promoted, and obstructing genuine progress. The world would be much better off without them. Buy organic food if you can, and eat locally to support farmers’ markets. We can grow quite a bit of food in our own gardens.” NATURE: “This separation from the natural world is very, very drastic. Psychologists have shown that children need nature to grow psychologically healthy, they need grass and bugs and sky and flowers. And when kids grow up glued to video monitors, and all these things, they become divorced from nature. We need nature for our psychological wellbeing.” For more inspiration from Jane Goodall, visit our blog at byoumagazine.com/jane-goodall. Also visit her website at janegoodall.org

Beauty’s Tips

Beauty* offers outer and inner beauty tips to shine your brightest inside and out!

True Essence

Q: Dear Beauty, I love products that smell good, but most fragrances give me a headache—even if I smell them on my friends! What’s up with that?

A:

A: If you have trouble wearing or inhaling fragrances, you’re not alone! Many people are sensitive, or even allergic, to fragrances and the chemicals used to produce them (see info at right).

Outer So what can you do? You can use products without Beauty fragrances (like those labelled free”), but if you Tip enjoy“fragrance scents, try essential oils!

Essential oils are the natural scent extracted from plants that give them their "essence" (specific odor and flavor). You know, the smell that overwhelms the air when someone peels an orange or when you walk through a pine forest? You’re experiencing the soul-soothing power of essential oils!!

Essential oils are becoming really popular—you can even find them in most grocery stores (be sure they say they are 100% pure essential oil). And not only do they smell ahh-mazing, but many can act as a natural form of medicine (see story next page). In fact, for thousands of years, people have used them for healing practices!!

FACT: More than 5,000

chemical ingredients (most of which are synthetic) are used for fragrances in everyday products—one scent alone may include 600 chemical ingredients! Because fragrance formulas are considered trade secrets, companies aren’t required to list all ingredients on labels—you may simply see “fragrance”. So you don’t know if chemicals like phthalates are present (phthalates are man-made chemicals linked to early puberty in girls and other harms—they show up in PVC plastic, toys, plastic wrap, and personal care products). Read labels; it’s best to avoid phthalates whenever possible! See how to make your own essential oil fragrance spray & body butter on pages 36-37!

irls can put a lot of time, energy, and money into external things to impress others, while often ignoring what makes them feel good inside. The best way to feel good about yourself is to take care of YOU, who you are inside. By taking time to do something for the inner you—like relaxing in a tub with a few drops of lavender oil, meditating, or writing in your journal—you impress yourself, and that feels good. When we are happy inside, it reflects on the outside. The true essence of who we are radiates out externally and our Heartlight (that beautiful light of our inner beauty) shines bright! So next time you’re about to expend time, energy, or money on something, ask yourself, “Is this for them…or for me?”

Nature’s Healers: Guide to Essential Oils The use of essential oils to promote emotional well-being and physical health is called aromatherapy. Ancient civilizations understood the power of aromatherapy, and now you can too!

How to Use Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated, and most aren’t meant to be applied directly to your body (other than gentle oils like lavender and tea tree), but they do need a way to enter the body. So here are a few ways to use them: ** Skin absorption: Anything you put on your skin absorbs into the body and goes into your bloodstream. To apply essential oils to your body, mix them with an unscented “carrier” to dilute and distribute the essential oil easily over the skin. Carriers can be toxin-free lotions or natural oils — like coconut, olive, jojoba, avocado, or almond oil. For example, use 1-3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil. (It is possible to be allergic or sensitive to certain oils, so try testing small amounts before using all over your body.) Best places to apply are palms of hands/bottoms of feet, pulse points (like the wrist), or areas of pain (back, forehead, stomach, scratches, bug bites, etc.). ** Inhaling: Aromas inhaled travel into the lungs then enter the bloodstream. You can inhale essential oils directly from the bottle or add a drop to a tissue or towel and smell it that way. Or add a few drops to hot water and inhale the steam. Also check out diffusers—they work great and are an easy, clean way to enjoy aromatherapy! ** Ingesting: Only a few essential oils can be swallowed, like a drop of peppermint oil to freshen breath or lemon oil in water to build your immune system. It’s best to use the skin absorption or inhaling method unless

working with a health professional.

Create Your Own Beauty Products Using Essential Oils! By mother-daughter team, Heather and Abby Marsh

We are no strangers to allergies in our household, especially skin allergies. Hives, eczema, heat rash, acne, sensitive skin — you name it, we probably have it! When you have sensitive skin, you learn to read labels and what ingredients to avoid. But these days, because of undefined ingredients (like “natural flavors” or “fragrance”) and really long labels, understanding what’s actually in what we put on our bodies is getting harder to do. An easy way to avoid synthetic or overly-processed ingredients is to make your own products. Although our family has sensitive skin, we still want to smell good (we can totally relate to the “Ask Beauty” question on page 34)! So we experimented a little and came up with our very own recipe for a natural body spray (that smells ahh-mazing!) and body cream. Both are very simple to make, require very little ingredients, and make perfect homemade gifts—you can even customize with your own personal labels!

Craft 1:

Essential Oil Body Spray A great way to enjoy fun scents without artificial fragrances or chemicals!

You’ll Need:

• 2 tbsp distilled or filtered water • 1 tsp witch hazel • 20-25 drops of essential oil (we used 15 drops of lavender and 10 drops of a floral blend) • Small glass or plastic spray bottle • Small funnel (if you don’t have one, you can carefully pour the ingredients right into the bottle)

Make it!

• Pour all ingredients into spray bottle and shake well. • (Hint: also shake before each use)

TIP: Keep a bottle in your backpack, locker, or gym bag for on-the-go refreshers during the day! 36

Craft 2:

Whipped Body Butter Moisturize your skin with these simple, healthy ingredients!

You’ll Need:

• 1 cup organic raw shea butter • 1/2 cup pure coconut oil • 1-2 tsp beeswax (optional) • 40-50 drops of essential oil(s)— use more or less to your liking • Glass jar with lid • Mixer (stand or hand-held)

Make it!

1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil (and beeswax if you are adding) in the top of a double boiler. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes. 2. Stir in essential oils. 3. Place mixture in freezer. This step is crucial! If you don’t chill it properly, it won’t whip or stay whipped. 4. When mixture is partially solidified (about 10-15 minutes) remove from freezer. 5. Use a mixer to whip the mixture until it’s a butter-like consistency and soft peaks form. 6. Place in clean, glass jar with lid (small mason jars work great and make adorable gifts!) A little goes a long way! This body butter melts as it goes on and gets a little oily, but it absorbs quickly and leaves your skin very soft. No need to refrigerate, but keep in a cool place.

Which essential oil scent to choose?? Lavender or vanilla essential oils are always a great option because they smell sooo good, but consider orange, clove, or eucalyptus for a fun fall scent; or peppermint, frankincense, or rosemary for the holidays! There are lots of options available with essential oils— experiment by combining your faves and come up with a scent that is uniquely YOU!

That "GUT" Feeling What Is Your Body Telling You? by Joree Rosenblatt, MA

uch of our life we are influenced by the people around us – our parents, siblings, extended family, friends, teachers, coaches, the list could go on – so it is not always easy to figure out who we are. When you take the time to “be you”, you learn what makes you unique, special, and what sets you apart from others. If you don’t know what you like and value, you may just go along and do what others are doing, even if it is a bad decision. The more you know who you are, the more you will thrive in many areas – and be more likely to make healthy choices based on what is right for you.

we need to pay attention to? It’s actually easy once you know what to look for, so pay attention and notice: ~ If you have an increased heart rate ~ If you have an uncomfortable “pit” feeling or excited flutter in your stomach (a.k.a gut feeling) ~ The “feeling” that you just can’t explain (that’s your intuition)

Our intuition is an important tool to help us get through challenges and difficult choices we face in life. That “feeling” about a situation will guide you By getting to know yourself, you toward the right choice; it is that learn to trust your body and the little voice in your head (or heart) messages it telling you if Your body is your best you are doing is telling you. Intuition Tips:

~ Take time in your day to slow down ~ Disconnect from social media and digital devices ~ Connect with your breath – this will calm down your brain and body ~ Say the words “breathing in, breathing out” inside your mind ~ Notice any sensations in your body: Do they feel good, soft like silk? Or do they feel yucky, scratchy like wool? ~ Notice your thoughts without having to believe them or do anything about them ~ Practice being kind to yourself – let go of judgements or “shoulds” ~ Allow for whatever emotion you are experiencing – make friends with your emotions! ~ When making a decision, pause to check in with your body. Ask yourself how would you feel about this decision in a day? How about in a week, a month, or a year? Five years?

Developing Your Intuition T

ry hese ideas to build your intuitive skills and inner wisdom. Intuition is like a muscle; it will get stronger the more you use it. As you learn to recognize your intuition and see it lead you in the right direction, your intuitive power—and your confidence—will grow! • Make a point to begin noticing your intuition or “hunches”. Turn off your inner critic that needs to rationalize everything, and just listen – without judging if it’s right or wrong. Often something you "know" isn't right or true will come to you through feelings, hunches, and messages. • Ask yourself a question and listen to the first answer that pops into your mind. Several thoughts may flood your mind, but intuition is the “thought before the thought” – what was the thought you had before your brain answered? • Keep an intuition journal. Use your intuition (not your brain) to make a guess about something and write it down. Record any visions or sensations in your body too. Then look back at your journal to see how often you were right.

• Pay attention to when/where you get intuitive “flashes”. For some people it’s when they’re falling asleep or just waking up, taking a shower or bath, spending time in nature, watching a sunset, in a spiritual setting, or just having a quiet moment. Where and when is your intuition strong? • Use your feelings as a guide. Your intuition will guide you using feelings: a “yes” makes you feel happy, excited, and light; a “no” makes you feel anxious, uncertain, and heavy. • Exercise the right side of your brain. Intuition originates from the right “creative” hemisphere of the brain, so anything that stimulates your creativity will also increase your intuition. Write, paint, draw, craft, dance, sing, play an instrument, or just brainstorm ideas and get those creative juices going! • Meditate. Find 10-20 minutes in your day for quiet time to focus your mind. “Alone” time allows you to clear your mind of repetitive thoughts and worries so it's easier to listen to your intuition. It’s not necessary to sit crosslegged on a hard floor; you can relax in your fave cozy spot (just don’t fall asleep!) or even take a quiet walk in nature. • Visualize. Use your own imagination to visualize opening the “door” to your intuition or seek out guided visualizations (there are lots of them on YouTube). Guided imagery helps you direct your imagination in a way that allows your intuitive voice to come out naturally!

Some of the world's greatest scientists have made their greatest discoveries based on flashes of intuition. Albert Einstein said it is our most valuable asset and one of our most unused senses. “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. The only real valuable thing is intuition.” — Albert Einstein

Check out our tips on pages 40 & 41 to develop your intuition! It’ll be your best friend for life!

SCORE YOURSELF! COUNT UP THE NUMBER OF A ANSWERS... 6 to 8 As: You're very intuitive! You probably had a hunch that you'd get this response, because you tend to trust your intuition. If your gut tells you that something is a good idea – or a bad one – you listen to that inner voice. It's great that you’re so connected to your deepest thoughts and emotions! 42

BYOUMAGAZINE.COM

3 to 5 As: You have intuitive moments. Sometimes you know what a friend is going to say before she even opens her mouth – or she texts you as soon as you think about her. That's your intuition, and the more you listen to it, the stronger it will get. Trust that inner voice! It can help keep you safe and happy.

0 to 2 As: Give your inner voice a listen. Once in a while you might have an intuitive feeling, but if you don't have any facts to back it up, you’ll shrug it off. It's good to be smart and rational, but if your inner voice warns you to be careful, pay attention. Your intuition might be picking up on something!

COLOR Your Way to Connecting with Your Intuition! Coloring is a great way to unwind after a long day, and with this owl mandala, you can “get in the zone” and connect with your intuitive self while you color! Nocturnal animals, like the owl, are symbolic of inner knowing and intuition. Because owls can see in the dark (being able to see what other animals can’t) it is believed they can access wisdom that’s usually hidden from most. Ancients believed that owls have a magical inner light which guides them. You have this light too—how is your inner light guiding you?

How to have a

Having a clear mind helps you to not only feel better, but DO better in school. YouTube star Meg DeAngelis shares 10 tips exclusively for BYOU Magazine readers to be your best YOU!

CLEAR MIND by Meg DeAngelis

1. A CLEAN ROOM IS A CLEAN MIND. Turn your room into your own personal oasis. Being organized will make learning more fun. Use weekends to organize your homework workspace, and make sure to keep up daily by hanging up clean clothes or putting dirty ones in your laundry hamper.

6. REMEMBER SUMMER. Beat the fall blues by bringing something special to school (like a photo or souvenir from your summer trip) and look at it if you need a boost during the day. Share fun memories with friends, and ask about their adventures from summer too!

2. BE PREPARED. Start your day peacefully! Be prepared by organizing your school supplies and outfit the night before to make sure your mornings are smooth and seamless. You can even pack your lunch the night before so you can just grab it and go after breakfast.

7. MAKE A NEW FRIEND. Try sitting with a new group during lunch or invite someone you just met to sit with your group of friends. You might learn something new and may even just meet your new bestie.

3. STRETCH! Waking up 10 minutes earlier to stretch and take a few deep breaths can change your attitude for the entire day, plus it feels amazing. 4. LEARN SOMETHING NEW. Sign up for a fun elective or after-school class like choir or ceramics! Trying new things is a great way to keep the school day interesting, and you may even discover a surprise talent or make a new friend. 5. SPEND TIME IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS. Summertime may be over but that doesn’t mean you can’t still spend time outside – it really helps clear your head! Stay active by getting involved in a new activity or sport to help unwind after a day at school. Try eating lunch outside, and if you live near school, plan to walk there with a friend.

6. RAISE YOUR HAND IN CLASS. It can be hard to speak up in front of a group, but this year don’t be afraid to raise your hand to answer the teacher or ask a question. You’d be amazed at how many others are wondering the same thing and you may start an interesting conversation! 9. EMBRACE CHANGE. Change can be hard, but remember that getting a new perspective can be fun, so embrace it with open arms. A lot can happen in a summer so be ready to face and accept the changes in yourself and those around you. 10. BE YOURSELF. There’s nothing more beautiful than you, so remember to just BE YOU!

With over 5 million YouTube subscribers, Meg DeAngelis is a vlogging sensation known for her quirky girl-world videos. In addition to making videos, she also spends her time acting, singing, and hanging with her twin sister!

Aw kwa rd

! D E R E W EMPO

Awkward, embarrassing situations happen to everyone! So rather than letting them take you down, here are tips to empower your way through them!

Barbell Blunder I’m teased about being skinny and I’m not very strong (I don’t exercise much), so my parents thought that a youth weight-lifting class would be a good idea. The class was full of really muscular boys and I didn’t want to look dumb in front of them, so the first day I grabbed a weight that was WAY too heavy for me and ended up on the floor. The next day when I got there, one of the boys handed me a set of pink one-pound barbells and they all called me “princess” the rest of the class. I never went back again! B-Empowered: It’s great that you put yourself out there by trying something new and that you realize the importance of exercise to keep your body strong and healthy! It’s unfortunate the boys didn’t put their energy into helping you rather than into making you feel dumb, but stay motivated and don’t let this one experience discourage you. You might try some strengthbuilding exercises at home or with friends, and look into yoga too; it’s a great way to build strength and most classes are very accepting of everyone.

Stinky Situation My group leader at camp this summer always tried to be funny by mocking people. One time when I came out of the bathroom after going #2 she made a huge deal about how stinky the bathroom was and grabbed a girl’s perfume and sprayed it everywhere! For the rest of the trip she kept telling Check out everyone that if they went body spray on page 36! into the bathroom after me, they’d better wear a gas mask! I didn’t go #2 for the rest of the week and ended up super constipated by the time I went home!

B-Empowered: First of all, it’s SO uncool that your leader bullied you like that! Trying to be liked by mocking others is NOT funny (she obviously has self-esteem issues), and you could’ve reported her for inappropriate behavior. Second, every single person on the planet poops and smells up the bathroom (yes, even your crush LOL!) so for you to jeopardize your health and wellbeing because a bully embarrassed you is also not cool for you! So do your daily #2, and if you’re self-conscious about the smell in public, spritz a scented spray in the air before opening the door. 

Lousy Lunchtime I started a new school this year and made a few new friends, but they make fun of me at lunch because I’m a vegetarian. They call me the “Green Queen” because I bring lots of organic veggies in my lunch, and they’re always shoving ham sandwiches or burgers in my face. I explain I don’t eat meat because I believe that saving animals is important and that I prefer healthier choices, but it doesn’t stop them. I’m starting to dread lunchtime and eating in front of my friends; the other day I even ate my lunch in the bathroom!

B-Empowered: How cool you’re a vegetarian!

You should never be ashamed of who you are and what you believe in. Thinking about the lives of animals is something not many girls your age do, so be proud that you’re willing to take a stand on an important subject. Invite your friends to discuss topics they feel passionate about; maybe it will make them more accepting of your choices. But if they won’t accept you for who you are, know that you can, and will, find more-accepting friends who like you for YOU!
