In with the New

S

pring brings on many a metamorphosis and Decisive Latino is no exception. Since we launched our consumer title and renamed our car magazine, from Latinos on Wheels to Decisive Auto Latino, in 2007, we’ve published the magazine with two covers, front and back, featuring each magazine, Decisive Latino and Decisive Auto Latino, on each side.

As you can see, this issue changes that. We’ve chosen our women’s issue to debut our new look for spring that reflects our decision to fold our automotive side into our consumer magazine, so that from now on, we’ll be known under one title, Decisive Latino, and with one cover.

We’ll still devote half the magazine to the auto industry, more than any other Latino publication reaching the multi-generational Latino, but the new format mirrors our mission to be “the source for cultural and consumer news” on all topics, from autos to vacations. Plus, it’s now a little easier to read.

In the spirit of our new look, our cover story features how to make the latest runway looks wearable for every day. In “Everyday Runway” (page 12), celebrity stylist, Yanira Garza chooses two looks from the Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera spring collections and finds more affordable versions for you to wear to stay fashion forward.

In “Executive Decisions” (page 8), we celebrate the growing rise of Latinas in business and Corporate America by featuring three women who embrace their roles as leaders. They generously share their advice for how to succeed at a Fortune 500 company.

In our departments, our experts share makeup tips for the spring and summer and advice for staying heart healthy.

Midway through the book (page 14), you’ll find Decisive Auto Latino where we continue our focus on women with the “Women’s Car Guide” (page 18).

Heart Health Begins with

laFamilia Lifestyle changes affect heart health, beginning with exercise and a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and grains. However, heart healthy eating habits don’t happen overnight. It takes time and effort to make them part of your routine and for many Latinas, having your family support can ensure success. The following tips will help you get started.

Have a plan

Be a good role model

Meals tend to be healthier when we plan them ahead of time, so try to plan menus a week or a month at a time. Keep track of healthy meals your family likes and keep experimenting with new healthy recipes from time to time.

Kids usually want to do what their parents do. Eating a variety of foods is a great way to model healthy habits. Research shows children are often more willing to eat healthy foods and be active if they see their parents and other family members doing these things first.

Start slow

Be patient

Do not try to revamp eating habits overnight but decide on one specific change at a time and do not rush. Remember this is going to be for a lifetime, not just for a week.

It’s okay if your family doesn’t like every meal you serve. If you keep exposing them to new varieties, they will find ones they like! Persistence will pay off eventually.

Never give up

Celebrate

Without a doubt you will find resistance from someone in the family.

Even when the family does not show much progress or interest, do not be discouraged. Chances are that you are making progress in many other ways; you are probably eating together more often, planning meals together, feeling more energetic, etc. If you stay the course you will continue to make progress.

When the family has turned a healthy change into a habit, it’s time to celebrate! Reward the family with a fun activity everyone will enjoy.

Activities such as camping, visiting an amusement park or just a night in your backyard will let them know that you really care.

Get creative Allow your kids to help you in the kitchen with age appropriate tasks.

Letting kids help you in the kitchen gets them excited about a meal and can spark creative healthy meals your family will eat.

shadesofsummer Make-up Tips for the Season

This summer season, bolder is better, especially when it comes to colors. The most popular shades will be fuchsia, orange, and copper, with classic black eyeliners. But a little can go a long way, so here are my tips for having a face that matches the fashion trends for spring and summer.

1. Always prepare skin for make-up.

Irrigate your skin by drinking a lot of water and eating healthy. Next, exfoliate once a week, massaging your face with a circular movement to remove dead cells. Rinse with cold water to close pores, moisturize daily, and apply a sun block with a minimum 25 SPF beneath the moisturizer if it doesn’t already have sun block.

2. Don’t over apply make-up.

It’s better to have fewer layers, especially in summer, to let skin breathe. Choose a creamy concealer (just one tone lighter than skin tone) and mix it with a moisturizer. Apply with a brush for a more even coverage. If you use a sponge applicator, use it once and discard. Top with mineral powder to set the make-up. It’s finer than regular powder so it doesn’t accentuate wrinkles.

3. Accentuate eyes with bold colors and eyeliner.

Cat eyes and bold colors are the trend for summer. Use blue and green eyeliners and brown and copper shades to create a smokey eye. Any color eyes shadows are usable. To create a cat eye, the key products are cream eyeliner and an angle brush. For a perfect cat eye, go from the corner to the inside. Starting at the center of the eye may make the lines less

even. Use dots to outline the shape you want if it helps. Accentuate with the angle brush. Finish with waterproof mascara.

4. Use pinks and bronzers for a natural look on the cheeks.

Apply blush only to the apples on the cheeks, not the entire face.

5. Pink and orange are best lipstick shades for summer.

If these shades seem too bright, use a lip gloss rather than a lipstick for a softer look. dD

Success Advice from Fortune 500 Latinas Ever wonder what it would be like to work in Corporate America? For some, the prospect may seem inconceivable, but the fact is, it could happen. While only a handful achieve executive status, Latinas are hired by Fortune 500 companies every day. Many are trailblazers, while others may find that a Latina or Latino has helped pave the way.

We asked three Latinas at the top of their game to share their experiences and tips for success.

anne alonzo Vice President, Global Public Policy Corporate Affairs Kraft Foods Inc. As a youth, how did you envision your professional future?

In my youth, I did not envision being a professional or executive. In college, I participated in a work-study program and I served as a legal secretary; this provided me exposure and access to professionals. This new perspective helped me change my vision and I aspired to be a lawyer.

How important were mentors?

Very important, but I don’t think I was formally categorizing my mentors as mentors. In fact, I suspect some of them may not have known, per se, that they were my mentors—rather they were friends who I discussed issues with and sought out/respected their point of view and sought out their guidance. My kitchen cabinet of supporters!

How did your education prepare you for your current job?

A formal education prepares us for jobs and life period.

How did previous work experience prepare you for your current position?

I’ve had a broad and rich work experience spanning government, nonprofit and the private sector, and across the globe. It has not been a straight path. I do think all these experiences have served me well in my problem solving and ability to manage global issues.

How did you overcome roadblocks/challenges to advancement?

I never give up and always try to find a way around a roadblock. Some work environments have a limited time span, so it is important to know when to transition out to the next challenge and opportunity and even at another organization. In short, it is important to know when to stay and work around challenges and when to leave.

What surprised you about working for a Fortune 500 company?

I was surprised by how polite and helpful many of my colleagues were. It was sure welcome!

If clothes make the man, does the same rule apply to women?

I think dressing appropriate to the occasion and setting is key.

How would you describe your management style?

I am a supportive manager. I want my employees to be stars—excellent at what they do and motivated. So I will help open doors and clear their paths and then get out of the way and lead from behind! To my mind, my team’s success is of personal pride and my top priority!

Please list some dos and don’ts for advancing in Corporate America?

Do understand the larger context and where you/your role sits in the organization.

Do be very prepared.

Don’t look for ways to take ownership at your company. Act like an owner—this is your company and your livelihood—do all you can to make it successful!

Don’t engage in petty office politics, lead by example.

Don’t sit back and expect changes. You are the change!

To what do you attribute your success?

Being prepared, seizing opportunities, being grateful as well as having fun and enjoying my life, including work!

grace lieblein GM Brazil President and Managing Director General Motors As a youth, how did you envision your professional future?

As a young person, I was always interested in math and science. During high school, I decided that I wanted to be an engineer; I liked solving problems. As soon as I entered the workforce, I knew I wanted to be a leader, but there’s no way I would have guessed I would be sitting in a managing director position in Brazil.

How important were mentors?

Very important, but I never had a mentor in the formal sense, it was more people I would meet on a regular basis. I had many great leaders in my career that really believed in me and pushed me, they helped me see myself in positions that I wasn’t sure I could do.

How did your education prepare you for your current job?

Engineering does an outstanding job of teaching structured thinking and problem solving, all skills that apply to my job today.

How did previous work experience prepare you for your current position?

I’ve always worked for GM. I started when I was 18 as a co-op student in a plant. After college, I became a manufacturing engineer, then a product engineer. In Mexico, as the managing director, I grabbed on to 30-years of experience at GM and my experience in Mexico helps me today.

How did you overcome roadblocks/challenges to advancement?

I’ve never felt like I’ve had barriers to advancement. My philosophy is to focus on my performance, not to dwell on the next assignment. The best way to get a great next assignment is to do an outstanding job in the current one.

What surprised you about working for a Fortune 500 company?

The heart of a company is its people. I continue to be very impressed by the caliber of people we have. Even though we’ve had tough times, the fortitude of passion and loyalty to GM is very impressive.

If clothes make the man, does the same rule apply to women?

It really depends on the area that you work and the culture. As an engineer, the standard uniform is black pants, a blouse, and blazer. You have to go to

plants, labs, etc. In engineering, women are a minority, so you don’t want to draw attention to yourself.

In Mexico, people there were very cosmopolitan, very put together. Seeing how women in professional government didn’t have a uniform but wore beautiful dresses, color, stuff I never wore, I changed. I’ve evolved, partly based on culture and the freedom to be individual and feminine.

How would you describe your management style?

I’m a big believer in teams. You can achieve so much more as a team vs. a group of people. Secondly, I’m a very firm believer in communication. I try to be as open and direct as I can be. I’m not a micromanager at all. I believe leaders are here to provide direction and vision but also to support our team and remove roadblocks for success.

Please list some dos and don’ts for advancing in Corporate America?

Do understand the culture of the company and try and fit in without losing the uniqueness of who you are, especially Latinas who may be in the minority.

If everyone shakes their head in the same direction, a company doesn’t benefit from your uniqueness.

Don’t do anything against your integrity. If a company asks you to, it’s not the right place for you.

Do make sure you have a clear perspective of what success means to you.

Many let the organizational structure define success.

To what do you attribute your success?

My family. There’s no way I could do what I’m doing today without the support of an excellent husband of 31 years and my daughter, and my broader family; mom, dad, sisters everyone helped. Also, having clear priorities determines how you spend time, where you put your energy.

maritza montiel Vice Chairman and Deputy Chief Executive Officer Legislative Affairs, Quality & Risk Deloitte As a youth, how did you envision your professional future?

My parents fled the revolution in Cuba to come to America, giving up everything so that my brother, sister, and I could have a better life. Then and now, the advice they gave me was: “You can do anything that you set your mind to do.” So while a girl, I didn’t envision being an auditor, but I did have the courage to dream big and believe that anything was possible.

How important were mentors?

I was lucky early on in my career. I had a mentor who believed in me. In a time when it was rare for a woman and even rarer for a Latina, to be in my profession, he provided the assignments, experiences, visibility, and guidance I needed to develop. As the highest-ranking Latina at Deloitte, it is my responsibility and my mission to provide those same opportunities to others.

How did your education prepare you for your current job?

The University of Miami, where I earned a business degree, gave me the strong foundation on which I have built a career and life. My career at Deloitte has been very fulfilling, but at times challenging. My education partnered with my parents’ advice gave me the courage to remain focused and be relentless in the pursuits of my dreams.

How did previous work experience prepare you for your current position?

I have been blessed to spend my entire working career at Deloitte. For over 35 years, I have had the good fortune to be given ever-increasing roles and responsibilities that continue to challenge me to this day.

How did you overcome roadblocks/challenges to advancement?

My Cuban immigrant heritage helped me get my career started because it made me fearless. I have always been willing to take risks, as it is the only way to grow. If you are afraid of failure, you will seldom know success. When I made partner in 1984, I became one of just five female partners in the firm.

What surprised you about working for a Fortune 500 company?

As a Latina entering the workforce in the early 1970s, I am surprised at the pace of change within the Fortune 500 for women and people of color. It’s not where I would like it to be or where I could imagine it being, and in many dimensions it is still a work in progress. In fact, only 17 women are CEOs of Fortune 500 corporations today. This is especially disappointing when you consider that women, according to the Virginia Tech Women and Leadership Philanthropy Initiative, control more than half of our nation’s wealth, wielding purchasing power in excess of $14 trillion. The pace of progress also confounds when you consider that today there are 9.1 million women-owned businesses.

This speaks to the essence of why gender diversity is so important.

If clothes make the man, does the same rule apply to women?

While great clothes don’t make great leaders, you do need to dress the part to be taken seriously. My advice is to be balanced and dress appropriately for the “room you are in.” At Deloitte, that means I wear women’s’ suits, but I always add my own Latina flare with a well-chosen piece of jewelry and/or accessory.

How would you describe your management style?

I have always led my teams with the goal of developing them to be “extraordinary leaders” and also focusing on the next generation of leaders, not followers. I encourage them to challenge the status quo to deliver a new standard of excellence in all their pursuits.

Please list some dos and don’ts for advancing in Corporate America?

Do take risks.

Do raise your hand for the projects no one wants.

Don’t doubt your ability.

Do accept help and learn from others.

Don’t let others define your potential. Anything you set your mind to do you can achieve.

Do find something you love to do that you have a passion for.

Do have the courage to dream big and focus relentlessly on your goals.

To what do you attribute your success?

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” I attribute my success to the immigrant work ethic instilled by my parents and their counsel to dream big. My career has taken many turns. I had to reinvent and believe in myself and embrace change. Even after 35 years in this business, I have much to learn and much to offer, and I continue to dream big.dD

AutoNoticias Garcia Co-Pilots First Grand-Am Win The Grand-Am Rolex Series held at Barber Motorsports Park in April included a total of 28 cars in the field.

The Spirit of Daytona team took the lead early on with Richard Westbrook at the wheel and the No. 90 Chevy Corvette dominated the remainder of the 2.5-hour race. The track surface was a challenge for every team, but Westbrook and Antonio Garcia had the upper-hand as they paced themselves and brought home the team’s first career Grand-Am win and the first win for the Corvette Daytona Prototype.

“From what I understand last year, I think the first two hours doesn’t really matter,” said Garcia during a post-race media interview. “You are one, two, five, or even 50 seconds ahead of the other contenders but if you have your tires in

really bad shape, then all your efforts are no good. That’s what I was keeping in my head for the whole race especially that last set of tires, the last stint.”

Joining Spirit of Daytona racing in 2009, the young Spaniard has already compiled a list of endurance victories that is envied by many far more experienced drivers. Having won what could be considered the “triple crown” of endurance racing, Garcia has now stood atop the podium at Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, followed up with his 2009 win at the Rolex 24. The 2012 season will be one of transitions, as Garcia pilots the new Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype with a new co-driver, Westbrook.

USHLI Raffles a Buick The Buick Division of General Motors has donated a 2012 Verano to the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) to raise funds for scholarships and internships.

Raffle ticket sales will end in July and the winner will be announced at USHLI’s Annual Dinner on August 16.

A Chicago-based national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, USHLI promotes education, civic participation—including nonpartisan voter registration, and leadership development for Latinos and other similarly disenfranchised groups in 40 states.

“We are very grateful to the Buick Division for its generous donation of this beautiful car,” said USHLI president Dr. Juan Andrade. “Over the years USHLI has awarded $1.2 million in scholarships and internships to Latino students throughout the nation. A simple $100 ticket purchase by enough friends and allies could enable USHLI to help up to 1,000 more Latino students complete their college education.”

USHLI hopes to sell 1,000 tickets during the course of the raffle. Anyone anywhere is eligible to purchase tickets and win. Tickets can be purchased with a check or credit card by calling USHLI at (312) 427-8683. Tickets may not be purchased online.

Cardenas Takes Top Trophy at Nationals It wasn’t quite as easy as Saturday’s wire-to-wire job, but GEICO Suzuki rider Martin Cardenas still managed to win his second AMA Pro Daytona SportBike trophy recently, to sweep the Triumph Big Kahuna Nationals and claim the unique top prize —a brand new surfboard.

“I have to learn how to surf now,” Cardenas joked in the winner’s circle.

“I have never tried, but I will head to the beach soon to see if I can do it.”

Tommy Hayden was the only one to keep Cardenas honest, riding right behind him the entire race, but lapped traffic near the end allowed Cardenas to thwart any thoughts of a real challenge and the Colombian took the checkered flag by 1.220 seconds.

Cardenas’s double-win weekend moved his total number of victories in the class to 18, a record amount. It also helped him build a sizable 20-point lead in the championship standings after just three races.

Named for the famous racer and car builder, Karl Abarth, the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth launched recently in Los Angeles but its coming was heralded, officially, in a Super Bowl ad in January.

Personified by a beautiful Italian model, the 500 Abarth asks a nerdy bystander, in Italian, “What are you looking at?”

The point of all this reinforces what Abarth, the man, said to describe his own lineup of racing vehicles, “small but wicked.”

Fiat accentuates the features commonly associated with performance vehicles—power, suspension, steering, and brakes—to make this Cinquecento the most affordable performance car on the market.

For starters, the 500 Abarth gets its power from an all-new 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo engine with 160 horses. It’s matched to a five-speed manual transmission; there is no automatic option.

The suspension includes a 40 percent more torsionally rigid rear axle and 20 percent stiffer rear springs. The Abarth-tuned electric power steering accentuates the steering response and the high-performance brake system helps push the 500 Abarth to accommodate more aggressive driving.

On the test drive in Las Vegas, the 500 Abarth took to curves like a pro and while the ride is a bit bumpier, the responsive steering and braking improved driver confidence, which ultimately means, made it more fun to drive. In comparison drives against the Mini Cooper, the 500 Abarth excelled on the performance side, as well as styling.

2012 Hyundai Azera

The seventh vehicle in Hyundai’s 24/7 product initiative (seven new models in 24 months), the 2012 Azera hopes to find a sweet spot between its siblings, the Sonata and the Equus.

The full-size sedan takes on modern Hyundai design cues, namely the “fluidic sculpture” that takes inspiration from the mechanics of flight. The undulating beltline allows for a long, sleek roofline accented by the third window and wraparound LED taillights.

Powered by the Lambda II series of 3.3-liter gasoline direct injection V6 engines matched to a six-speed automatic with Shifrtonic manual control, the Azera should earn an EPA estimated city/ highway fuel economy of 20/29 miles per gallon (mpg). That’s best in class.

The chance to improve the fuel rating by more than five percent comes with the Active Eco mode that modifies engine and transmission control for better fuel economy.

Like all Hyundai’s, the Azera comes with a long list of standard features, including heated leather seats in the front and back, navigation with a backup camera (first in class), a cooled glove box, and power driver and passenger seats.

New safety technology includes an impactreducing seat system that eliminates the need for active front head restraints and is expected to reduce head and neck injuries by 17 percent.

The Azera also includes Hyundai Blue Link telematics with a 90-day complimentary trial period, but a blind spot warning system is not available.

Pricing for the 2012 Azera starts at $32,875.

2103 Dodge Dart

The first Chrysler vehicle to share a platform with its European siblings, the 2013 Dodge Dart also grows the manufacturer’s fuel-efficient lineup.

The Dart hopes to redefine the segment. For starters, it borrows architecture from the Alpha Romeo Giulietta but it also brings back a customization package from days gone by.

With 12 exterior colors, 14 interior color and trim options, three fuel-efficient engines, and three transmission choices, there will be 100,000 possible configurations for the new Dart.

Dart was styled with the unmistakable Dodge split crosshair grille and racetrack taillamps with152 indirect, a glow LEDs. Powered by 2.0-liter engine with 160 horsepower, it achieves 36 mpg on the highway. The available 1.4-liter MultiAir Intercooled Turbo engine should earn 41 mpg on the highway.

On the inside, the sculpted instrument cluster grabs immediate attention. The focus on detail is also apparent with soft-touch accents throughout.

On the recent launch in Austin, Texas, the available seven-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) customizable gauge cluster display offered easy interactivity and striking graphics.

Multiple storage options include a roomy glove box that harkens back to the days when a glove box fit more than just an owner’s manual.

An excellent package of standard features includes 60 safety features, like a ParkView rear backup camera and ParkSense rear park assist. A blind spot warning system is available.

Offered in five trim levels: SE, SXT, Rallye, Limited and R/T, pricing starts at $16,790.

Kia Rio 5-Door First-time cars tend to come from the compact car segment because they save money and gas.

Kia gets back to basics with its subcompact, the 2012 Rio 5-door, but adds flair with its design.

Powered by a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine and matched to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the Rio 5 should achieve an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy of 30/40 miles per gallon (mpg).

In typical Kia fashion, the Rio comes equipped with features not normally found at this price point, e.g. air conditioning, steering wheel mounted audio controls, and satellite radio, as well as exceptional options, like a rear parking camera.

Standard safety features include six airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and Hill-start Assist Control The 2013 Rio 5-door has an MSRP of $14,350.

Mazda3 The Mazda3 receives a facelift for 2012, but that’s not why it’s on this list. It offers a blind-spot monitor as an available option, a feature normally reserved for luxury cars, and that deserves recognition.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nine percent (533,000) of all accidents occurred when vehicles were changing lanes or merging. This feature issues a warning light on the side-view mirrors and a beep to avoid a collision.

The Mazda3 also features the first application in North America of Mazda’s SKYACTIV fuel saving technologies, achieving a city/highway EPA rating of 28/40 mpg on the Touring and Grand Touring sedan.

Adding to its fun-to-drive factor, it comes with a choice of four transmissions, including a five-speed or six-speed manual.

Buick Verano Buick expands into a new class with the 2012 Verano, its first offering in the luxury compact segment.

Dodge Challenger Traditionally set aside for guys, muscle cars aren’t supposed to appeal to women. But the Dodge Challenger defies that rule.
