F
or Latinos, it’s that time again. Hispanic Heritage Month will soon commence. Many communities will prepare to celebrate independence day festivals on September 15 (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) or 16 (Mexico) or perhaps a Día de la Raza celebration on October 12 (Columbus Day). Some may not celebrate at all, at least, not yet. This issue is dedicated to those communities and those people who take the initiative and opportunity that September 15–October 15 provides to celebrate our culture and reach out to others and invite them to learn a little more about us. A quick Google search of Hispanic Heritage Month leads to the basic facts, it began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was expanded into a month in 1988. What’s harder and harder to find is by whose initiative was this accomplished? I’m happy to tell you. Former Air Force colonel Gil Coronado advocated for the expansion. He began to lobby congressional leaders in 1985 after years of planning events for Hispanic Heritage Week and feeling the time crunch. “I grew up feeling, like a lot of Hispanics, that we were not part of society,” says Coronado. “I felt America needed to be educated on what Hispanics are all about; our rich history and contributions to the country. We are not a threat. That was my whole thought.” Initially turned away, even by Hispanic congressmen, he persisted and eventually, Rep. Esteban Torres (D-Calif.) introduced the bill that was approved and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. It’s this kind of leadership and advocacy that inspires progress. In this issue, we’re also acknowledging Latino advocates, hiprofile and in the trenches, whose courage has helped to
mobilize their communities. On the cover, actress Eva Longoria is our pick for Latino advocate extraordinaire. I’m always a little bit crushed when I hear Latino celebrities respond to the question of roles for Latinos and opportunity in Hollywood, or the lack thereof, with, “I just want to be known as an actor who happens to be Hispanic.” Proudly proclaiming and embracing her Mexican-American and Texan roots, Longoria didn’t shy away from the question, calling out Tinsel Town’s attitude toward Latinos, the persistent stereotypes that present barriers, and the need for Latino-driven projects. She has gone on to parlay her fame on one cause after another, from education to immigration; her latest being the Eva Longoria Foundation to help Latinas increase their economic clout. We say, “Mil gracias Eva y adelante.” What’s a Hispanic Heritage issue without coverage of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations? This year rather than focus on the biggest fiestas that already get lots of press, we’re focusing on lesser known towns and cities where Latino communities are burgeoning and where cultural festivals have emerged to bring communities together. The summer issue also brings another tradition for Decisive Latino, our annual Truck Guide. We look at the latest models for 2014, some are already on sale, others will be shortly. Pickups are making a comeback, spurred in part by a Latino affinity for trucks, but so too are SUVs, many with familiar names but new fascias. We hope you find inspiration in our stories this issue. Seek out a celebration near you and enjoy a happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Sinceramente, Valerie Menard Associate Publisher/Editor

vegetariantips
BY SYLVIA MELENDEZ-KLINGER
for Beginners
Once considered weird or faddish, vegetarianism is now recognized by health authorities as a sound way of life. A well-balanced vegetarian and vegan diet is high in fiber, low in cholesterol and fat, and can provide all the nutrients we need while lowering the risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity, hypertension, digestive problems, diabetes, and osteoporosis. The 2010 U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend that the largest proportion of our diet should consist of fruits and vegetables with moderate amounts of protein, oils, and sugars. A well-balanced vegetarian diet closely follows these guidelines, easily supplying all the necessary nutrients.
Smaller quantities of protein are also found in fruit, vegetables, and grains. When a varied diet is eaten, there is no difficulty in obtaining sufficient protein—even on a total vegetarian diet (vegan). Vitamin B12 functions as a co-enzyme in protein metabolism, and is especially important for red blood cell formation and nerve tissue. A cup of fortified soy milk, cow’s or goat’s milk will supply the recommended
Eat plenty of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables Grains and whole grain products provide most of our energy needs in the form of complex carbohydrates, plus fiber, some protein, vitamins, especially the B group, and minerals. Include whole grain bread, pasta, breakfast cereals, oats, brown rice, rye products, corn, whole wheat, millet, buckwheat, quinoa, and barley in your menus for variety. Fruits and vegetables provide fiber, minerals, vitamins, complex carbohydrates, and natural sugar. Dark yellow-orange vegetables such as carrots and pumpkin are good sources of Vitamin A and C. Fruits, particularly the citrus variety and berries contain high levels of Vitamin C and antioxidants, as do dark green leafy vegetables including spinach and parsley, which also provide calcium and iron. An iron supplement may be recommended, especially if you have a family history of iron deficiency or anemia. Calcium can be adequately supplied by dairy or non-dairy products (soy products, almond beverages), legumes, tofu, broccoli, green leafy vegetables and calcium fortified soy beverages and orange juice. Whole grains, legumes, and nuts also add zinc.
Eat moderate amounts of protein Most people consume more than twice their recommended daily allowance of protein, which can be damaging to health. Proteins are made up of 22 amino acids. Eight cannot be produced by the body, so it is essential to include them in the diet. They are found in varying quantities in both animal and plant foods. Various plant groups can “complement” each other to supply the correct balance of amino acids. Good sources of protein include: legumes (seeds from pods such as soy beans, lentils, peanuts, dried peas, and beans), soy bean products including soy drinks and tofu, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, and whole grain cereals.
daily allowance.
How to get started! Most of us resist dramatic changes in our lifestyle and sudden variations to eating patterns are no exception. It is better to change gradually so your body can adapt to a different food pattern. 1. Start by adding one or two vegetarian meals to your weekly diet. 2. Gradually increase your intake of whole grain products. Choose whole grain bread and pasta, brown rice, and whole grain breakfast cereals. 3. Select a variety of fruits and vegetables, including foods rich in Vitamin C with each meal to enhance the absorption of iron. 4. Include eggs or egg whites (one–two per week per person) and skim or low-fat milk products or use a non-dairy soy drink. 5. Reduce empty calorie foods such as sugar and visible fats. Also beware of the hidden fats in pastry, biscuits, sauces, and dressing. 6. Avoid eating between meals. However, when you do snack, try fresh fruit or raw vegetables instead of reaching for chips or cookies. 7. Replace meat gradually by increasing your intake of an alternative protein source. Start by serving a vegetarian meal once a week. 8. Remember this simple formula: Grains + Nuts + Seeds + Legumes = Good Quality Protein.dD DAILY RECOMMENDED PORTIONS FOR A HEALTHY VEGETARIAN DIET.

Investing in Precious Metals
Historically, precious metals have been influenced by a different set of value drivers, creating the potential for effective portfolio diversification.1 There are opportunities for suitable investors in gold, silver, platinum and palladium that may complement investments in equities, fixed income or other assets. Like all stocks, however, the single, most important driver is price and when that drops, it’s time to buy.
Supply and Demand Despite short-term volatility, precious metals have multiple valuation drivers that may provide price support over the long term. These drivers include investment demand, growing industrial use, and robust consumer purchases of jewelry, especially in China and India. • Gold prices rallied in the aftermath of the 2007–2008 financial crisis, as low short-term interest rates prompted investors to search for returns that exceeded those of short-term government bonds and savings products. Concerns about the potential for higher inflation contribute to gold’s appeal as an inflation hedge, and interest in gold jewelry remains strong. • Silver accounts for a smaller portion of the precious metals investment market than gold, so valuations depend more on the industrial economic cycle. Silver is used extensively in superconductors, vehicles, photovoltaics, and other industrial applications. • Platinum and palladium are used to make catalytic converters for automobiles, jewelry, and liquid crystal displays in consumer electronics. Thus, like silver, platinum and palladium prices are heavily dependent on the state of the industrial economy.

higher for specifically identified metals than for allocated and unallocated metals. • Allocated account. In an allocated account, your precious metals (bars and coins) are stored with those owned by other investors, but no specific asset is identified as belonging to you. Storage costs are generally higher than those for unallocated metals. • Unallocated account. Unallocated metals cannot be physically delivered. Your investment is held in book-entry form and represents a share of interest in a pool of precious metals. When you redeem your interest, you receive the corresponding market value of the investment, less any fees and costs.
Help in Managing Risk It is important to understand that precious metals historically have generated considerable short-term volatility. Which investments best complement your portfolio will depend on a number of factors, including your existing holdings and appetite for risk.dD FOOTNOTES/DISCLAIMERS
1 Investing in the precious metals sector involves special risks, including those related to fluctuations in the price of precious metals and increased susceptibility to adverse economic and regulatory developments affecting the sector. It may also be subject to the risks of currency fluctuation and political uncertainty associated with foreign investing. There is no guarantee that a diversified portfolio will enhance overall returns or outperform a nondiversified portfolio. Diversification does not ensure against market risk.
When using precious metals as a portfolio diversifier, there are a number of ways to invest. • Specifically identified metals (bars). Specifically identified metals are bars that are distinguished by a serial number or other unique marker that identifies them as belonging to you. Once purchased, you can either take Robert G. together Latino communities organize cultural celebrations across the country. We find four in the oddest places.
Since the first Latinos found themselves crossed by a border and in a land that was no longer theirs, cultural festivals served to remind them of home. Today, they serve a similar purpose but with the added mission of inviting non-Latinos to join the celebration and experience the culture via food, music, and dance and learn a little history to better appreciate the Latino next door. Each year, we feature Latino destinations for Hispanic Heritage Month. This year we chose to explore
Latino festivals but rather than choose the largest, we’re looking at communities that get much less fanfare but also reflect the growth (according to the 2010 Census) of the Latino population across the country. It took initiative to launch these celebrations, especially in towns where the Latino population is still growing. Latinos in the cities and towns we’ve featured were compelled to gather together. We invite you to celebrate with them.

Latinos make up 8.88 percent of the population in Hawaii, or 120, 842, and the majority of them live in Honolulu. The Latino community in Hawaii has been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month for more than 20 years. Alma Latina Productions, led by Nancy Ortiz, returns this year with the Hawaii Hispanic Heritage Festival and Health Fair on October 26. It’s free and open to the public. Offering an additional benefit to festival goers is the health fair that invites local healthcare agencies and providers to distribute information critical to Latino families.
Festival Hispanic Cultural de Easton
Easton, Pennsylvania Population: 26,800 Latino Population: 5,331 Percentage: 19.89% Percentage Change: 107.43% There are larger Latino festivals in Pennsylvania, like Hispanic Fiesta in Philadelphia or the Annual Hispanic Festival in Lancaster, but the celebration in Easton gets our pick because it’s the newest. Inspired by Mayor Salvatore Panto, the Latino community in this picturesque town in eastern Pennsylvania organized the first annual Hispanic cultural festival this year. Panto reached out to Colombian native Lorely Sanchez to develop the festival by organizing a
committee of Latino community leaders for ideas and suggestions. The festival took place on July 27, featuring local vendors, children’s programming with Payaso Alverjita, a performance by Ballet Folklórico of Peru and a concert showcasing area artists representing Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. Planners hope to bring the festival, which is free and open to the public, back next year.

Virginia’s Latino population has nearly doubled to 633,945, according to the 2010 US Census. Ten years ago, the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce created the ¿Qué Pasa? Festival to highlight the state’s diversity and international melting pot. Held May 4–5, this year’s celebration attracted an estimated 15,000 participants and included transforming the Richmond Canal Walk into the famous Floating
Gardens of Xochimilco, Mexico, with boats offering free rides to festival goers. Latin music and performances along the Canal Walk greeted the masses who also sampled Latino food, beverages and dazzling arts and crafts. A dynamic mixture of sights, sounds and tastes, the ¿Qué Pasa? Festival invites each participant to fully engage with Richmond’s Latino community.

One of the last mid-size SUVs to stick with a body-on-frame construction, the all-new 2014 Toyota 4Runner improves on looks and capability with optional third-row seats (SR5 and Limited models) for seven-person seating capacity. At the recent launch in Farmington, Pennsylvania, the 4Runner showcased its off-road finesse as well as its on-road quietness and smooth ride. In its fifth generation, the 4Runner’s redesigned front fascia conveys a more rugged and aggressive appearance, with a muscular front grille and smoked headlamps. Available in three grades, the SR5 and Trail grades feature a color-keyed grille insert and front bumper while the top-of-the-line Limited’s front design abounds with chrome accents including a plated grille insert, front bumper, and fog-lamp bezels. A 4.0-liter V6 powers all trim levels and generates 270 horsepower and 278 lbs.–ft. of torque. Matched to a five-speed automatic transmission, the V6 earns an
EPA-estimated 17 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for 4x2 models. The 4x4 models lose one mpg on the highway. The standard Eco-Driving feedback can help improve fuel-efficient driving. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds and all vehicles feature an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness, and a rear back-up camera as standard equipment. All 4x4 models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and the A-TRAC traction control system while each trim offers standard technology for offroad enthusiasts. A two-speed, part-time four-wheeldrive (4WD) system, with neutral position is standard on the SR5 and Trail grades while full-time 4WD and a locking center differential come with the Limited. Pricing will be released nearer the on sale date in September.
Have you ever wondered where the Fiat 500 comes from? Apparently the 500L, or as described by Fiat engineers “the mother of the Cinquecento.” Actually, the longer, (27.7 inches) and wider (six inches) four-door 2014 500L looks more related to the Mini Clubman, perhaps because it serves the same purpose, to offer greater versatility to compact car buyers. Extra inches mean extra room on the inside of the 500L, starting with the ability to comfortably seat five adults or in tech terms, best-in-class interior, head and shoulder, and rear cargo volume (with the seats up). A panoramic window design, constructed of glass from the A-to D-pillars, offers 360-degree views, further enhancing the spacious interior. An oversized sunroof is available but the greenhouse effect it creates will make it preferable in cooler climates. The fuel-efficient MultiAir Turbo engine powers the 500L, providing class-leading output of 160
horsepower and 184 lbs.–ft. of torque. On the recent launch in Baltimore, the 500L exhibited quite a bit of peppiness as well as interior quietness. Happily, it comes with a six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed Euro Twin Clutch transmission is available. Matched to the turbocharged engine, both achieve an EPA estimated fuel economy of 33 mpg on the highway. The manual performs one tick better with 25 mpg in the city. The eco-Drive application can also assist with fuel economy. Welcome standard convenience features include the Driver Selectable Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with outside temperature, average fuel economy, distance-to-empty, etc. Remote keyless entry, a CD player, Bluetooth and Uconnect 5.0 with a five-inch touchscreen are also standard. Pricing for the 2014 500L starts at $19,900.
The Lexus IS introduced sportiness to the brand when it first debuted in the United States. In its third generation, the 2014 IS sport sedan improves on the theme. Each IS model, the 250 and 350, is distinguished by its powertrain. A 2.5-liter V6, with 204 hp and 185 lbs.–ft. torque powers the former and a 3.5-liter V6 with 306 hp and 277 lbs.–ft. torque powers the latter. Substantially increased overall body rigidity on the 2014 IS provides a more dynamic driving experience. An all-new multi-link rear suspension, revised front suspension, and steering derived from the GS sedan improve performance on the IS 250 while the IS 350 adds an eight-speed transmission. A new Drive Mode Select system features up to five driving modes. The IS 250 and IS 350 offer Eco, Normal, and Sport modes. Ramping up the sporty factor, the IS F Sport package brings four
drive modes: Eco, Normal, Sport S, and Sport S+, as well as super bolstered seats and Variable Gear Ratio Steering. On the recent launch in Austin, Texas the F Sport 250 and 350 performed notably in back-toback comparisons against two German competitors, handling confidently and with flair. On the outside, the IS is a looker, bearing the distinctive spindle grille of its larger siblings, a wider stance, and HID low/high beam headlamps. All this fun can come with greater risk so Lexus offers new active safety features, including, a Lane Departure Alert system and a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Isn’t it lucky that the brand’s first sporty sedan is also its most affordable? Pricing for the IS 250 starts at $35,950.

2014 Corvette Stingray
feature and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming across all grades, a segment exclusive. The truck also returns with its innovative dampened tailgate that floats down and up when released for ease of usage. What grabbed this Texan’s attention, however, is the new 1794 Edition, named for the ranch, founded in 1794, on which the Tundra plant is located in San Antonio. This fancy truck may be a bit more low-key and understated than its competitors, e.g. Ford King Ranch and Ram Laramie Longhorn, but the burnt orange, Lexus grade leather seating will find many fans in central Texas. Styled, engineered and assembled in the U.S., pricing on the new Tundra starts at $25,920. Pricing for all other grades has either been reduced or maintained for an overall MSRP reduction of 0.7 percent.
Spend even the shortest amount of time driving in San Francisco and you’ll very quickly come to realize the process is all about going around stuff. The city’s streets are more like an ever-changing obstacle course than a network of thoroughfares. Which is a perfect environment for something small and agile like the 2013 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive. The Smart Car’s 55-kilowatt electric motor produces 35 watts of continuous power. If you hit the go-pedal hard, the full 55 kilowatts will be generated for about two minutes. This translates to 74 peak horsepower and 47 steady-state horsepower. Further, the motor generates 96 lbs–ft of torque the moment you press the go pedal. From a 240v outlet recharging the battery takes about six hours. In about 3.25 hours, it can be recharged from 20 percent to 80 percent of capacity. The EPA
says to expect 76 miles on a full charge. Smart’s Battery Assurance Plus (BAP) guarantees the battery will hold at least an 80 percent charge for ten years, or it will be replaced free of charge. The plan costs $80 per month, but choosing BAP reduces the car’s MSRP by $5000. The Federal government is offering up to a $7,500 tax credit and starting August 1, Smart is providing a $2000 rebate. Thus, the ultimate price of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive could be as low as $10,500 for the Coupe and $13,500 for the Cabriolet—and even less if your state and or local governments also offer tax incentives on the purchase of an electric car. MSRP is $25,000 for the Coupe and $28,000 for the Cabriolet.
The halo car of all halo cars, the Chevrolet Corvette has been redesigned for 2014. Gone are the round taillamps, replaced instead with rectangular ones that evoke the Batmobile. A CD player is also gone. What has returned is the Stingray moniker and this car will earn it. At the recent launch in Monterey, California, the all-new Stingray did what all Corvettes do, turned heads, but it also showcased plenty of new technology. Gills, or vents on the hood and over the rear wheel wells help visual its marine namesake as well as improve aerodynamics, performance, and fuel economy. Direct injection, Active Fuel Management, continuously variable valve timing help the engine conserve fuel, earning an EPA estimated city/highway economy of 17/29 mpg with the seven-speed manual. That doesn’t mean, however, that the Stingray sacrifices performance for fuel efficiency. Powered by a roaring 6.2-liter V8 that earns 455 horsepower and 460

2014 Tundra
My mother used to say: “Your face is your fortune.” It’s rare to hear the same sentiments when it comes to light duty trucks but according to Toyota consumer research, looks matter. The redesigned 2014 Tundra takes an even bolder stance on the outside, with a bigger grille, three-piece front bumper, and squared wheel wells. For the first time, each trim level will offer distinctive design cues offering truck buyers more variety and configurations. Tundra is offered in three cab styles, two-door Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab and four-door CrewMax, all available in 4x2 and 4x4. At the reveal in Farmington, Philadelphia, it coasted through the off-road course. Three available powertrains include a 4.0-liter V6 base engine with 270 horsepower and 278 lbs.– ft. of torque, and two V8s (4.6 and 5.7 liter). The Tundra can claim bragging rights, providing a rear back-up camera as a standard
—V.M.
—Lyndon Conrad Bell lbs.–ft. of torque, it accelerates from zero-60 mph in less than four seconds. Like its fancy cousin, the Cadillac XTS, it has a configurable instrument cluster with digital displays and 62 possible designs. It’s also just as luxurious with carbon fiber, aluminum, and wood accents plus a removable roof panel. What’s a Corvette launch without some track time? Firmly planted with a 50/50 weight distribution, the Corvette inspires confidence in most drivers. The new Stingray offers five driving modes, from touring to track, via the Driver Mode Selector that adjusts 12 performance parameters. On the track, it held tight, even when my driving instructor ordered me to “Punch it!” Pricing for the 2014 Corvette Stingray will start at $51,995. —V.M.

2014 truck suvguide guide New Models Hope to Pick Up More Sales Momentum
written by Christopher Jackson
s we swing into 2014, it becomes clearer than ever that we’re living in a Golden Age of automobiles— or, at least, what will someday be regarded as one. Much of the good news in the auto industry comes from truck sales that, once again, are leading most segments. Trucks also sit at the top of the Latino market when it comes to sales and happily, 2014 promises a choice selection, some of which are already available. Lovingly designed and built with an eye toward quality and longevity that was unheard of 60, 40, or even twenty years ago, here are some of the trucks that Latinos may hopefully be reminiscing about in 2064.
ACURA MDXu Acura’s biggest crossover benefits from cleaner styling and continues to be a high-tech benchmark in its class. The MDX is lighter and quieter, in spite of its longer wheelbase. It’s powered by a new directinjection 3.5 liter V6 that produces 290 horsepower and still returns decent fuel economy.
tBMW X5 You didn’t notice that the BMW X5 got a redesign? Don’t feel bad. The updated sports-activity vehicle soldiers forth with very subtle design changes. The toothier grille is wider, flanking adaptive headlamps, and BMW offers a wider range of interior-design packages. The all-new X5 is completed by a new diesel powerplant with improves horsepower.

truck guide tCHEVY SILVERADO/GMC SIERRA The new full-size pickups from General Motors get an evolutionary makeover for 2014. Updated engines and new premium models are the highlights. Interior comfort has also been improved. Chevy’s even trumped Ford’s fancy tailgate ladder with a much simpler cutout bumper step. The trucks are still fighting criticism that they’re not distinct enough, however.
DODGE DURANGOu Dodge has upgraded the Durango, currently the largest vehicle in its stable, with smoother styling, improved interior appointments and a new eight-speed automatic transmission that’s shared with the Jeep Cherokee. The Durango retains its seven-passenger capability and 7,400-pound towing capacity.
tFORD TREMOR The Tremor breaks new ground by being the first hot-rod pickup truck to break from the big-V8 mold set forth by muscle cars. Powered by Ford’s hot 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, the Tremor is no slouch, with 365 horsepower on tap and a muscle car-like 4.10 rear axle.
FORD TRANSIT CONNECTu The second-generation Transit Connect looks a little more like a micro-minivan than a snail, and it’s gained cargo capacity—the payload is up to 1,600 pounds—and convenience, in the form of SYNC, a rearview camera, and an available navigation system. Two four-cylinder engines, 1.6 and 2.5 liters, are offered, providing good fuel economy. There’s also an official passenger version, which neatly expands the options for families looking for transportation that won’t break the bank at the gas pump.
tJEEP CHEROKEE The resurrected Jeep Cherokee has gotten a lot of attention for its uncompromising styling, which blends traditional Jeep hallmarks with an ultra-modern, rounded silhouette. A choice of four-cylinder or V6 power is offered: the high-efficiency 2.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder provides a range of almost 500 miles and 31miles per gallon (mpg ) on the freeway, while the new 3.2-liter V6 produces 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque for real off-road ability. The Cherokee should live up to its Jeep heritage with the “Trail Rated” Trailhawk version.

truck guide tJEEP GRAND CHEROKEE/GRAND CHEROKEE SRT The updated Grand Cherokee has evolved into the perfect combination of luxury and off-road ability. The conservative restyling hides a new eight-speed automatic transmission and the return of the diesel V6 engine that combines impressive fuel economy and stump-pulling torque. The Grand Cherokee is more refined as well, with new interior appointments. The track-attacking Grand Cherokee SRT has stepped up to the next level as well, with more distinct styling and zero–60 acceleration down to 4.8 seconds. Pricing for the 2014 Grand Cherokee starts at $29,790 and $63,990 for the SRT.
LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT u You might have seen this speedy SUV racing a classic Spitfire fighter and charging up Pike’s Peak. If those hints were too subtle, this is the reason; Land Rover’s hot-rod version has been updated for 2014, with all-new styling and improved performance. The new Range Rover Sport has shed almost a thousand pounds in some versions, which makes the 500 horsepower available from its supercharged V8 go a very long way indeed.
tMERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER The Sprinter has had the mega-van market more or less to itself for almost ten years, but things are about to get exciting in a big hurry. Both Ford and Ram have Euro-sourced challengers on the way, so Mercedes is stepping up the Sprinter’s game with a new 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel engine and a sevenspeed transmission. Both provide improved fuel economy, while the current V6 diesel continues as an option. Improved interior materials give the Sprinter a richer and more comfortable ride.
MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERu Mitsubishi might be financially on the ropes, but the all-new Outlander suggests that the brand’s not ready to pull the plug just yet. One of the only compact SUVs to offer seven-passenger seating, the new Outlander gets a much richer interior, high-tech options like Forward Collision Mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. New transmissions boost fuel economy into the low thirties.

tRAM 1500 DIESEL Ram has beaten Ford and Chevrolet to the punch as the first to install a diesel engine in a light-duty pickup truck (yes, we know that Chevrolet made a diesel LUV in the seventies, but we’re not talking history right now). Equipped with the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6, the Ram 1500 diesel tops 25 mpg on the freeway, as well as towing up to 9,200 pounds. The Ram pickup continues to offer the brand’s signature big-rig styling and extremely comfortable suspension.

RAM PROMASTER u Like the Ford E-Series, the antiquated Dodge Van is no longer in the picture. In its place, there’s the massive Ram ProMaster, which offers the same cavernous cargo capacity and modernized driving experience as the Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter—but with the added twist of front-wheel drive. Like the Transit and Sprinter, it’s designed to be customized, and is available with a big 3.0-liter fourcylinder diesel engine and Chrysler’s 280-horse 3.6-liter V6. Maximum payload exceeds 5,000 pounds.
tTOYOTA 4RUNNER The 4Runner gets tougher with its recent makeover, or at least tougher-looking. Toyota’s tweaked the front fascia and upgraded the interior. The new 4Runner doesn’t lose any of its off-road capability, thanks to a 270-horsepower V6 and a Trail trim level that combines all of the best off-road gear into a single package. The 4Runner’s available with the Entune multimedia system as well.
TOYOTA HIGHLANDERu As the 4Runner has gotten tougher, the Highlander has become more carlike. The third-generation Highlander arrives for 2014 and it’s sleeker and much more of a tall wagon than a truck. The smooth design is wrapped around a choice of four-, six-cylinder and hybrid powertrains and all-wheel drive (AWD). A new double-wishbone rear suspension and electronic power steering improve handling significantly. The Entune multimedia system and a rear-seat entertainment system provide premiumgrade appointments.
tTOYOTA TUNDRA Bigger and bolder, the updated Tundra has bulked up significantly. The design has lost its soft edges, and Toyota’s swinging for the fences with a choice of a 270-horse V6, 310- or 380-horsepower V8 models, and the new high-luxury 1794 Edition, which is aimed directly at the Ford King Ranch, Chevrolet Silverado High Country, and Ram Laramie Longhorn premium pickups. The “light duty” model can tow up to 10,400 pounds and the back-up camera and Blluetooth are standard on all grades, a segment exclusive.

AUTONOTICIAS VUHL Supercar Debuts at UK Race
Toyota Wows Crowd at NCLR Luncheon
Mexican auto upstart, VUHL, debuted its VUHL 05 lightweight supercar recently at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, held in West Sussex, England. An example of the yet-to-be-seen 05 was displayed at the race while a second car, piloted by 21-year old rookie F1 driver, Esteban Gutiérrez, carried out demonstration runs on the last day as a member of the “First Glance” class. The car includes a highly modified 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine by Ford. Mounted mid-ship it provides 285 horsepower to the rear wheels and 310 lbs.–ft. of torque. VUHL (pronounced ‘vool’) stands for Vehicles of Ultra Highperformance and Lightweight. The brainchild of two brothers, Guillermo and Iker Echeverria, VUHL was inspired by a profound passion for all things automotive instilled in them by their father, Guillermo Echeverria senior. It will be a side project for their design company Exte, based in Mexico City.
In a poignant moment, Toyota showed its appreciation of Hispanic consumer brand loyalty by giving away a 2014 RAV4 to a lucky National Council of La Raza (NCLR) annual conference attendee who best answered the question, “Where would you go in the new RAV4 and why?” Amparo Nuñez of Tampa was selected from approximately 600 entries based on her answer stating that she would use the car to transport migrant workers in her remote farming community to the city to seek medical care. In tears, Nuñez thanked Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. senior vice president of Automotive Operations Bob Carter for providing, “One of the best moments of my life,” and for making her work with migrants a little easier. At the Latinas Luncheon sponsored by Toyota for the fourteenth year, Carter spoke of Toyota’s commitment to the Latino community vis-à-vis multiple outreach programs like Buckle Up for Life program. He also recognized Rosa Santana, a Latina entrepreneur who runs a successful human resources business and a major Toyota supplier thanks to the company’s Opportunity Exchange program. “The Hispanic community has a steadfast friend in Toyota,” said Carter. “Latinos buy more Toyotas than any other automotive brand—a ranking we have enjoyed since 2004. Believe me; Toyota does not take your loyalty for granted. We thank you and value your continued support of our company.” Carter added that Toyota spends more than $1 billion each year with minority and women-owned businesses, one of only 18 companies to reach that level.
Kia Helps Disadvantaged Schools Kia Motors America (KMA) will extend its philanthropic partnership with DonorsChoose. org, the online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need, by launching a major funding campaign in 2013 that will raise $5 million in just two years. To date, Kia has matched the support of 21,000 citizen philanthropists to collectively deliver more than $2.1 million in resources. “Kia Motors America (KMA) has grown to become the eighth largest brand in the U.S. by volume, and as we grow, our culture and core values compel us to give back to the com-
munities that we call home and contribute to a better future for all,” said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia. “Kia’s support has helped bring books, chess sets, butterfly gardens, guitars, basketballs, microscopes, and many more resources to America’s high-need classrooms,” said Charles Best, founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org. “DonorsChoose.org is grateful for Kia’s renewed commitment to helping thousands of students access the materials they need and the quality education they deserve.”dD

2014 Nissan Versa Note written by Valerie Menard
When the 2014 Nissan Versa Note SL arrived at my door, it had only one day to rest. It was headed back on the road the following day to New Orleans, more than
500 miles to the east, to deliver me to the Queen and Crescent Hotel (not recommended) to attend the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) annual conference. Four days and more than 1000 miles later, Nissan’s new fivedoor compact proved quite fuelefficient, roomy, and delightful. There’s no better way to bond with a car than on a road trip—new car buyers used to be encouraged to do so to “break-in” their new vehicle. They could still be; it’s been years since I bought a new car. However, anything can go wrong over the long haul, so when a vehicle completes the round trip with nary a blip, it makes an impression. As an exhibitor at the conference, I had many more things to pack than just a suitcase, and the Note’s interior volume, 112.9 cubic feet, proved sufficient. The SL Package ($1,700) added the Divide-N-Hide Adjustable Floor in the rear cargo area but while it nicely filled the cargo well created by folding the standard 60/40-split seats flat, the space blocked by the headrests was more essential, so I kept the seats erect. What makes the second-generation five-door hatchback unique in its class, and something that came in extremely handy in New Orleans, was the 360-degree back-up camera, or Around View Monitor, included in the SL Tech Package ($800). Parking is a rare commodity in the French Quarter but the camera, and the Note’s size, made parallel parking a breeze. The navigation system, courtesy of the Tech Package, also came in handy and the cloth seats were comfortable. The best news, however, was the fuel economy. Powered by a 1.6-liter inline four- cylinder engine matched to an Xtronic CVT, the Versa Note SL is expected to achieve an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy of 31/40 mpg. I didn’t reach that although it did hover around 38 mpg on the highway. I spent
20
DECISIVE AUTO LATINO
approximately $135 on fuel during the month-long test of the Versa Note, logged more than 1600 miles, and averaged 33.6 mpg overall. Nissan recently introduced the Versa Note in San Diego. Positioned between the Versa sedan and the Sentra, it’s expected to build on the Versa’s impressive conquest figure of 74 percent. Five-door hatchbacks offer greater functionality and at the compact level, they make great first-time vehicles. What’s unfortunate, however, is the penalty that customers who want a base model will find—the Versa Note S comes with a five-speed manual (a good thing) and basics like air conditioning and a stereo, but is sold as is. There are no interior options, not even power windows. Texas Highway 71 may be the more scenic route to IH10, which leads directly to New Orleans, but it’s certainly not the smoothest, and in the Note, it was painfully apparent. Even back on Austin’s highways and byways, the Note’s ride remained a bit rough. Offering many new innovations, the Note SL also included one of my favorite old ones. Last year I drove to the NCLR convention, held in Las Vegas, and I remembered that while I appreciated the satellite radio and USB input with iPod compatibility, which the SL included, I still used the CD player, the latest endangered technology. Thankfully, all Versa Notes include one! Pricing for the 2014 Versa Note starts at $14,780. The as-tested price for Versa Note SL came to $19,280.dD
