Defining the Flavor of Luxury

Handcrafted in select small batches in southern Italy, Dumante Verdenoce is meant to be sipped and savored by connoisseurs who enjoy other luxury spirits, including fine cognacs, single-malt scotches, artisan brandies, and other imported liqueurs. The ultimate combination of a slowly steeped, pistachio infusion with the fine artisan spirits and delicate natural ingredients creates a flavor like no other... rich, smooth and aromatic with a long and complex finish.

sweet charity

In addition to performing in the “Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief” telethon, Beyoncé is the official face of the limited edition tee shirt by Fashion for Haiti, a charitable initiative developed by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Proceeds of this shirt benefit the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund to aid in raising funds for recovery efforts to help those who are most in need of assistance.

Success isn’t really about what we accomplish or acquire in life; it’s about how much we give back, how much we help others – even when times are tough. As we begin to see positive signs of economic recovery, it’s important to take up the mantle of social engagement and remember that we can do well, and do good at the same time. Our special “Fore Charity” issue celebrates the spirit of giving and the integral role that golf tournaments and other activities play in charity fundraising and outreach. How can we make this world a better place? It’s a key question everyone must ask as we point toward the future. FORE! In this issue we shed light on a few people who choose to make a difference, whose small efforts benefit the community at large. Their ranks include celebrities like Halle Berry and Michael Jordan, who host charitable golf outings; supermodels Naomi Campbell, who put on a high-profile New York City fashion show to help victims of the Haiti earthquake, and Noella Coursaris Musunka, who’s dedicated to building a school for African girls in her war-torn native Congo. There’s music superstars Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé who performed at Hope For Haiti concert, and Alicia Keys, co-founder of Keep a Child Alive; and the women of the PGA Tour Wives Association, great supporters of children and families. You don’t have to be a famous actor, model, pop star, pro athlete or CEO to contribute something significant to society. We all have a responsibility, regardless of our status, to play a role in social progress. I hope this issue of The 19th Hole Magazine will inspire readers to play an active part in their local communities and beyond. The 19th Hole Magazine has earned distinction as golf ’s most fashionable and forward-thinking publication – and to us, giving back is always in style. We’re pleased to announce a special Fore Charity “giving back” program to raise funds and build awareness for non-profit organizations. We’ve created a range of Fore Charity T-shirts and tote bags as part of our charity subscription program. We will donate a percentage of subscription and merchandise sales to several worthy causes; a small act we hope will benefit golf and the broader community. For more information on how you can a buy a Fore Charity T-shirt or tote bag – and look good while doing good – visit our website: the19thholemag.com/ forecharity. ●

open question for U.S. women Let’s be blunt: The 2010 LPGA season has been dismal for American golfers. What better spot for redemption than the 65th U.S. Women’s Open, July 8-11 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania?

20 |

The19thholemag.com

Ladies looking to break through include Michelle Wie, now a seasoned pro at age 20. Wie has posted solid but unspectacular results in her second year on tour, with a few top-10s amidst mostly ho-hum outings. Then there’s Paula Creamer, sidelined since February with a thumb injury but expected to tee it up at Oakmont. The Yank with the best chance? Try Cristie Kerr, the 2007 Open champ and America’s top-ranked female. Kerr and Creamer will have more to contend with than just the international contingent. Alongside Patty Sheehan and Christina Kim, they’ll battle former Pittsburgh Steelers Jerome Bettis, Franco Harris and Lynn Swann in a two-part celebrity exhibition, set for Tuesday and Wednesday on the Oakmont practice range. Watch the U.S. Women’s Open on ESPN, set to provide more than 16 hours of coverage, or follow the leaders. <uswomensopen.com>

DO-GOODERS DONATE DOLLARS The USGA is best known for punishing setups of championship courses, but don’t let that fool you – when it comes to charity; the folks in blue blazers are a bunch of softies. Case in point: Since 1997, the USGA’s “For the Good of the Game” program has doled out more than $65 million to organizations helping disabled youth and adults learn and play golf. The association is deeply devoted to getting kids involved, staging events like the recent U.S. Open Junior Day at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Club in California, which drew more than 800 participants from regional golf programs, youth service agencies and schools. giving back is the new black Companies who make us look good also do good. [by Robin LoRé] Most of us seem to know that life is all about the give and take, but designers such as Jimmy Choo, Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karen, Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren, to name a few, know something more. They understand that it’s not just kind to be a giver, it’s also fashionable.

Ask any consumer who stands, undecided, before an array of enticing products. Most would admit that their decision of which brand to buy is largely influenced by image. The companies that honor philanthropy automatically project an image of responsibility, caring and respect for their community. Who wouldn’t want to buy that? Some of the most familiar and most fashionable brands on the planet such as Armani, Bulgari, Burberry, Ferragamo, Gucci, Missoni, and Versace give back. From Benetton to the Gap to Tom’s Shoes, these well known brands have established a resonance with consumers who like what they’re doing to help others. Fashion has long been on the runway for worthy causes, raising millions to relieve problems that affect us all. From breast cancer awareness to world hunger, poverty and education, and most recently, Haitian Earthquake Relief, the fashion industry has been there, front and center, to help sooth the world’s woes. Take, for instance, MAC Cosmetic’s Viva Glam lipstick campaign. The fund was started in 1984 by MAC founders Frank Angelo and Frank Toskan to help make a positive difference to those affected by HIV/AIDS. The Viva Glam Red was a big hit and included spokespeople from the gay community such as RuPaul and K.D. Lang. One hundred percent of the price of sale goes to the charity and millions have been raised since its inception. We applaud the fashion industries’ desire to make the world a better and more beautiful place. Their combined and individual efforts have made, and continue to make, a difference in our world and provide hope to those who receive the benefit of their aid. Their humanitarianism is inspiring. We as consumers can do our part by supporting philanthropic fashion companies. Before you open your wallet, keep in mind those companies that give back for the greater good. Choose them over others, not just for their haute fashion sense, but also for the good sense of their benevolence. ● Ralph Lauren is an iconic fashion designer who has been giving back for years. <ralphlauren.com> Below: Jimmy Choo’s limited edition PEP bag in partnership with Elton John AIDS Foundation supports the Simelela Center in South Africa <jimmychoo.com>; for every pair of Tom’s Shoes purchased a pair goes to a child in need <toms.com>; all proceeds from MAC Viva Glam lipstick support people affected by HIV/AIDS <maccosmetics.com>; Kwiat jewelry created a pink version of its Signature Platinum Star earrings for golfer Cristie Kerr’s Birdies for Breast Cancer Foundation. Additionally, fair trade goods companies such as Beads for Life give back by providing a fair wage, education and healthcare for global artisans. <beadsforlife.org>.

putting a round Your game hinges on your putter. The green is where most of the cinematic moments in golf occur. The simple task of rolling a small white ball into a slightly larger cup serves as the end of a 400 yard journey. On the green, the drama is played out at close range. Will the ball roll too far, die short of the hole or fall neatly into the cup? How will the subtle slope affect the path of my ball? With nearly half of all shots in golf being struck with a putter, it is, by far, the most important club in your golf bag. That’s precisely why club makers continue to pour R & D dollars into perfecting this workhorse of clubs.

1. Tour Edge Lady Backdraft GT The Tour Edge® Backdraft GT putters feature a variety of designs, from the most traditional to high-MOI mallets - and all feature a newly designed alignment aid. The aid, which is the same width as a golf ball, features a centered sight line for setting up your shot. The advanced TPE face insert delivers a responsive feel at impact, even on those delicate putts. $49.99 <golfio.com> 2. Ghost Putter Taylormade Rossa Ghost putters are designed to alleviate eyestrain by creating a stark contrast between its white finish and the darker blades of grass on the green. The putter’s two outer black top lines (on the opposite side not shown) are precisely ball width and the centerline helps in ball alignment. The Ghost also has a golf ball size hole at the rear of the putter providing a secondary visual aid. $159.95 <intheholegolf.com>

3. Dark Ace The Profound Dark ACE uses double-layer alignment so players can easily confirm that their eyes are over the ball. The correct putter position results in the white top bars hiding the colored lines on the lower part of the club. While putting, if the eyes aren’t positioned correctly, the “motion control center” of the brain will compensate for misalignment by making unintentional movements of the body during the stroke, resulting in missed putts. The Dark ACE can help putters who have difficulty with visual alignment. Price: $359 <profoundputters.com>

4. The Divine 2-Ball Putter Odyssey Divine Line putters feature putt-sinking technology wrapped in styling that is uniquely feminine. These putters were specially designed with female putting stroke and playing style in mind, so more weight has been shifted to the perimeter of the putter to increase moment of inertia and improve stability. They also feature shorter shaft lengths so they don’t have to be cut down to fit women. $169.95 <dickssportinggoods.com>

ways.

Yoga is known for increasing flexibility, which means your golf swing will be smoother than ever before once you’ve begun practicing this ancient form of exercise. Not only does the improved flexibility mean that your physical prowess for the game will improve, but the overall calmness experienced during yoga will help you stay peaceful, focused and composed while on the course. You don’t need to be a pretzel or even that flexible to experience the benefits of yoga. Start off by practicing basic poses like “The Warrior;” the act of maintaining a posture for an elongated period of time will help you develop your concentration and balance. Katherine Roberts knows. Fifteen years ago, when she realized just how much synergy there is between yoga and golf, she left her corporate job to spread the word. She’s been blending the two worlds together ever since. “The bottom line is that there are a few basic physical components that a golfer needs to have to play well,” explains Roberts, author of “Yoga for Golfers” (McGraw-Hill) and creator of seven specialized “Golf & Yoga” DVDs. She checks the elements off one by one: “Flexibility. Strength – specifically, core strength. Balance. Mental focus. Yoga provides all of these things.” More and more golfers are seeing the benefits of yoga. Yoga can be enjoyed as a weekly or daily class, or it is something you can do on your own with a DVD (perfect for travel). Once you’ve learned some basics, you’ll be able to better your pregame and post-game stretching routine. Find a new profoundness on and off the course by practicing breathing and meditation along with the physical postures. Yoga before and after a game can give you the pre-round warm up that you need, bettering your posture and reducing common problems such as lower back pain. Yoga helps strengthen your core muscles, and upper body twists will allow you to make bigger turns. Improve your balance for those uneven areas of the course, all the while making your hips, quads, hamstrings, neck, and shoulders, stronger and looser than ever before. Whether you’re a novice golfer or a pro looking for a new way to better your game by incorporating the age-old practice of yoga. Yoga is beneficial for people of all ages and fitness levels. Fore! Namaste! ●

Private lessons with leadbetter without leaving the comfort of your home [by STEPHEN HAHN] Hands up. What if that trainer could be none other than David Leadbetter, the world’s number one golfing instructor? Well, if you have a Nintendo Wii system, and some 20 million America households do, “My Personal Golf Trainer” produced by Data Design Interactive should go on your list.

48 |

The19thholemag.com

How

many people need a personal golf trainer?

This new game, which is far more than a game, uses the Wii Balance Board and the Wii Motion Plus Controller to capture a 3-D “image” of your golf swing. All you have to do is take a swing, standing on the balance board with the controller in your hands and the software creates a real time image of your golf swing on your television screen. Once your swing is entered into My Personal Golf Trainer, David Leadbetter then appears to give you a series of personalized lessons based on observed flaws in your golf swing using a vast library of instructional videos and training drills. It’s all remarkably easy and very informative. Video swing analysis has become an integral part of teaching the game of golf. The advantages of slow motion photography and freeze frame capability are powerful tools for the teaching pro, and provide an effective visual reference point

for the student to better understand his/ her own swing. Once you’ve perfected your swing enough you can either take it to the driving range or play a full 18 holes of virtual golf, which are also included with the game. As you play you’ll have the option to analyze every swing, from drives to chips to iron shots to putts and Leadbetter tells you what you need to improve. Surprisingly, I had a natural talent for swinging a golf club. My back swing and impact were solid, but my follow through needed work. Leadbetter told me that I rotated the remote a bit and my point of impact was too far away from my body. I made the adjustments and my shots progressively got better. Of course, a few of my changes sent balls spewing off in different directions, but I made progress. It’s clear that most of Data Design Interactive’s work went into refining the

technology of the swing mechanics, but I’d like to see some more polish put on the visuals. This technology will no doubt, get more people involved in the game of golf. After all, more than 20 million households in America have a Wii system attached to a television. <mypersonalgolftrainer.com> ●

there’s an app for that iPhone golf apps keep score, access rules and can even help improve your swing

[by steven hahn]

50 |

The19thholemag.com

It has been estimated that more than 300 iPhone apps are created every single day. In case you have been hiding in the locker room at your country club these past few years, “app” is short for “application program” and is a term used to describe software that is designed to run on smart phones such as the Apple iPhone. Apps have been developed for every imaginable … well …. application. From bus schedules to sudoku, book readers to restaurant reviews. In the mad technological rush to gain access inside your pocket, or purse, golf has not been left out. There are some very practical uses for taking your iPhone with you to the golf course. For starters, your very clever GPS enabled iPhone can help you find a golf course nearby and give you directions at every turn. Basically, everything your little car navigation device does your iPhone does better. After getting to the golf course, you can use apps to help you keep score, for yourself and your foursome. Several new apps, such as “GolfCard” and “ProCreative 09” allow you to ditch the old pencil and scorecard method and keep all your scores on your handy touchscreen. After the round, save your scores and these apps will maintain a record of your rounds for future retrieval and scoring analysis, like whether you score better on par-3’s or par-5’s. The software on your phone will also calculate your handicap automatically. Rangefinders, those little devices which tell a golfer how far a target is, are the latest must-haves for the complete golfer. Luckily, iPhone owners don’t need to run out and buy an expensive rangefinder. Several companies have introduced software that enable your phone to act as on-course GPS system which tells you precisely how many yards you have left to the green. Some can even tell you how far your drive just traveled. Of the smartphone GPS offerings, “GolfLogix” and “ViewTi” are among the leaders in the industry. During the round, if you are unsure of a golf rule, there is a new app, issued by none other than the USGA itself. The Rules of Golf, the official bible of golf rules is now available for the iPhone. Just pull out your iPhone, look up the rule, take your penalty and play on. If you want to improve your golf swing, you can use your iPhone for that too. Using the video and high speed shutter functions already built into the phone you can capture your swing on camera for an effective swing analysis tool. Newer apps, such as “V1 Golf for iPhone” and “iSwing” can diagnose your swing and suggest solutions to problems. You can even send your golf swing video to your pro for a correspondence lesson. If playing golf on the course is not enough to satisfy your craving for the sport, hundreds of golf and golf related video games are available for the iPhone, from playing on lifelike simulations of actual golf courses to putt-putt miniature golf. And, for the first time ever, this year, millions of golf fans around the world watched The Masters golf tournament on their handheld screens using a special app issued directly by the tournament. Even those stuffy folk at the most exclusive country clubs are catching the iPhone craze. ●

allure of the convertible Life in the fast lane is even better topless

[by THEO TYSON]

Pop culture is where icons and legends are born and vehicles are no exceptions – especially when it comes to top down driving. Americans have had a love affair with convertibles since they first hit the pavement and cruisin’ became as popular a past time as baseball. Infamous roads from Route 66 to Rodeo Drive were transformed into extended runways for Hollywood icons such as the late, great Steve McQueen – one of the original bad boys of the silver screen – to model their most expensive suits, ties and Cuban cigars. With paparazzi taking its proper place in the front row, the ultimate statement accessory was a convertible.

One of the most coveted accessories was the 1957 Jaguar XKSS Roadster owned by…you guessed it, Steve McQueen. He was the man every woman wanted that drove the car every man had to have…thus the romance began. Only 16 of these roadsters were manufactured and purchased new the XKSS was barely $6,000, yet this rare find has sold for over $1million. This roadster and 17 other of the world’s rarest and most brilliantly conceived cars from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, are part of a special The Allure of the Automobile exhibit at Atlanta’s High Museum through June 27. <High.org> Photo courtesy of the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA

2010 MASERATI GRANCABRIO

The19thholemag.com

ENOUGH TO MAKE THE SEX AND THE CITY GIRLS CLUTCH THEIR PROVERbIAL PEARLS The perfect blend of form and function, the 2010 Maserati GranCabrio removes the need for compromise by offering four real seats. Just recently introduced in the United States, Maserati’s first ever cabriolet model of the GranTurismo, the Maserati GranCabrio, has been turning heads in Europe since late winter. Designed by expert coach builder Pininfarina, the interior appointments of supple leather and rich wood are enough to make the Sex and the City girls clutch their proverbial pearls. Such beauty is not lost on the roads, however. With the longest wheelbase in the convertible market, the S Coupe does not disappoint with a 4.7 liter V8 engine with well over 400 hp and superior handling. Whether hugging the winding roads of suburbia, navigating traffic in the urban jungle or enjoying a trip to grandma’s house – the GranCabrio’s 6-speed automatic with paddle shifter will allow you to relax and enjoy the ride. Available in six exterior colors with options for two tone styling on the interior, Maserati kept with tradition by opting for a clean, canvas top that slips into obscurity in only 20 seconds. Built for men and women alike, the Maserati GranCabrio offers power, sophistication and a certain ‘joi de vive’ worth every penny of the $90,000 price tag it carries.

2010 INFINITI G37 CONVERTIBLE AN ACOUSTIC UTOPIA TOP UP OR DOWN COURTESY OF BOSE OPEN AIR SOUND SYSTEM This car is the socialite of convertibles. The Infiniti G37 convertible comes well equipped to handle anything with a modest 3.7 liter V6 engine and 325 hp with extraordinary handling and steering. Another impressive feature is the Bose Open Air Sound System by visionary engineer, Mr. Kazuhiko Otsuguro. The sound quality in convertibles has long been sacrificed alongside the sounds of nature, but with 11 channels of custom equalization, Infiniti has pushed the envelope and technology to offer its drivers an acoustic utopia – top up or top down. At first glance and with the top up, the convertible appears to be an identical twin to the coupe version, but make no mistake, the G37 stands alone. In less time than it takes to decide on dinner, the retractable hard top glides into its designer trunk revealing a virtual cockpit of comfort and luxury. A well laid out (read: user-friendly) dashboard highlighted with easy to read gauges and aluminum or wood trim accents the sinuous leather featured throughout. A great car for a track day or an al fresco Sunday brunch – the G37 is practical, playful and ready for whatever, whenever.

The19thholemag.com

IT’S BEEN FIVE YEARS FOR THIS PORSCHE, BUT PLEASE DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK It’s a Porsche – need we say more? Or a better question – where do we begin? Introduced to the North American market in 1964, we have been waiting five years to see a new rendition of the 911 Turbo return to the roads, but please don’t call it a comeback. Stealthily sexy, this Porsche turns heads for a second and third glance if you can catch a glimpse in the 3.1 seconds its takes for it to go from 0 to 60. The 911 Turbo S tops out just short of 200MPH (195 to be exact) with ceramic composite brakes to maintain control. With an added 30 horses bumping full horsepower to 530, Porsche still managed to retain respectable fuel consumption. The cabriolet comes standard with 19” RS Spyder wheels, adaptive sport seats and beautifully supple twin tone leather interiors. All the classic colors of red, yellow, black and white are still available, however, a new ice blue metallic option is yet one more reason this car is the ultimate accessory. From quick trips to the mall for a pair of Christian Louboutins to jaunts at the cigar bar for a Davidoff – the Porsche 911 Turbo S will help you arrive in style.

wasn’t much of a gamble when

Harrah’s Casino decided to partner with celebrity chef Paula Deen this spring. The popular casino and hotel located in Cherokee, NC, at the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is opening “Paula Deen’s Kitchen as part of a $633 million dollar expansion to the resort. the restaurant will be a

Intended to be a full-service restaurant with seating for 404 guests, Paula Deen’s Kitchen will serve a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner. The atmosphere will be decidedly “down-home” southern style and reflect the same cozy comfort of her now famous home and kitchen in Savannah, GA. Although this is not her first partnership with Harrah’s, it is her first a la carte restaurant experience with the company. The Paula Deen Buffet, located at Harrah’s Tunica Casino in Tunica MS was opened in May 2008 and has become a favorite among visitors looking for a delicious, rib-sticking, southern style meal. A la carte menu items include many Paula Deen favorites such as The Lady’s Cheesy Mac, her deliciously moist Sweet Potato Buttermilk Cornbread, hearty and satisfying Sausage Corn Chowder, and her sweet, rich, cream cheese filled Gooey Butter Cake. Even though she has been cooking professionally since 1989, Ms. Deen did not reach a wider audience until her collaboration with the highly popular Food Network. Her relationship with that network began in 1999 which led to the launching of her own popular cooking series entitled, “Paula’s Home Cooking” in 2002. Ever since, the chef has been in high demand for her warm personality, inviting drawl and, of course, her enticing, mouth-watering southern style recipes. She has since launched a line of cookware products, spices and prepared foods, hosts two additional Food Network shows, has authored numerous cookbooks and even tried her hand at acting, making her debut in the 2005 movie “Elizabethtown.”

Her multiple talents ensure that both the restaurant and adjacent shop will be a huge draw for Harrah’s Casino and Hotel. And the chef seems equally excited by the venture as well, “I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel,” commented Deen. “I couldn’t think of a better mix – southern food and casinos. It has all the ingredients for a good time.” For golfers that good time is sure to include the resort’s newest guest amenity—Sequoyah National Golf Course. The 18hole, par 72 championship course was designed by Robert Trent Jones II and offers stunning views of the Smoky Mountains from every hole and an opportunity to work off one of Paula’s meal’s. Even with her busy schedule the vivacious Deen always finds time to give back to the community. She contributes to her local chapters of Make-A-Wish, Susan G. Komen For the Cure, and March of Dimes. She also consistently supports the Bethesda Home for Boys giving them the $20,000 that she won on “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader” and $100,000 raised by hosting guests in her home for a $500 per person dinner. She works with Helping Hungry Homes, a Smithfield Foods Initiative and made headlines by “taking one for the cause” as she was accidentally hit in the head with a ham. By partnering with the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System she has opened the Paula Deen Academy of Culinary Arts at the Woodville-Tompkins Career Institute. Here students will earn culinary arts certification in addition to the high school diploma. ●

BESO Restaurant to Las Vegas. Additionally, the multi-talented star launched the first female owned night club on the Strip. EVE Nightclub and BESO Restaurant are located inside the 8.5 billion dollar “Crystals” CityCenter MGM/Mirage Las Vegas development. The elegant, LEED certified green restaurant has become the stomping ground for A-List celebrities, with fans including: Prince, Victoria and David Beckham, Kate Beckinsale, The Black Eyed Peas, Zac Efron, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Hayden Panettiere, Jessica Simpson, and Salma Hayek. A patio overlooking the ARIA porte-cochere offers outdoor dining all year round for those who want to enjoy their meal al fresco. BESO, which means “kiss” in Spanish, offers a variety of steaks and seafood. The menu is eclectic with a Latin flair and includes several recipes handpicked by Longoria herself. Some of the most popular include a killer guacamole and a savory, hearty chicken tortilla soup. World renowned chef Todd English presides over the environmentally friendly kitchen and ensures that each gourmet meal portion is huge and satisfying. For dessert, don’t miss the churros. This traditional, sweet, crunchy “Spanish donut” is done up in delectable, BESO style but without the fuss. Meant to be eaten by hand, they are the perfect end to a flavorful, filling meal—we dare you to not lick your fingers! EVE is located inside BESO and, as mentioned, is the first female owned and operated nightclub in Vegas! Eva designed the club herself to provide an alternative to the “all boys” atmosphere that dominates the Strip’s nightlife. This hotspot features lavish VIP booths, floor-to-ceiling mirrored windows and 50-foot tall arched ceilings. Dance, mingle and sip the night away in this luxurious, visually intoxicating nightspot. The one-of-a-kind colossal video screens surrounding the dance floor are unique to

this club alone and offer a truly amazing dance experience. However, for this A-list celebrity it is not all about red carpets and an incredible lifestyle. She is well known for her active support both in money and time to a long list of charities. She has represented Callaway Golf in its campaign to fight breast cancer, and hosted Eva’s Heros a charity golf tournament to raise money and awareness for special needs children. Through Ophra’s Angel Network she gave a home to a Katrina victim and after the earthquake in Haiti, Longoria volunteered her time to George Lopez’s “Help Haiti” Fundraiser. She has since become an ambassador for aHomeInHaiti.org. She also helped Pepsi Co. launch the “Pepsi Refresh” project, raising money and awareness for her charity Padres Contra el Cancer. In 2009 as a result of her children’s charity work and dedication to social causes, she was named philanthropist of the year by the Hollywood Reporter. ●

good spirits Frida Kahlo Tequila distills its inspiration from a fearless feminist icon. [by Robin LoRé] The Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, was well known for her flamboyant nature and the stark revelation of her personal inner turmoil as it was expressed through her art.

determined, talented and candid,

painted images that challenged the norms of her times.

When Dorado, Pizzorni and Sons, set out to create an artesian tequila they could think of no one better to inspire their best efforts than Kahlo. Each retro inspired bottle of Frida Kahlo Tequila, bears her likeness as does the wooden stopper. However, as it was with the artist herself, the contents inside make it distinctly desirable. Each small batch is traditionally handcrafted and distilled from pure 100% blue agave in Jesús Maria in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The blue agave is indigenous only to this region. Frida Kahlo Tequila comes in three varieties. Blanco is excellent for mixing perfect margaritas or as the base for other tequila infused cocktails. The reposado or “rested” version is allowed to age for six to nine months, thus making it smoother for drinking alone or for mixing a more refined cocktail. The añejo or “aged” premium variety is casked for no less than three years, resulting in a tequila that is meant to be savored, unadorned, as one would a fine cognac. Prices range from $50 for the blanco to $90 for the añejo. In keeping with the food, beverage and alcohol trades’ history of philanthropy Dorado, Pizzorni and Sons saw an opportunity to benefit charities that aid women and children. As a result, they are working with the Frida Kahlo Foundation. Partnering with philanthropic minded restaurateurs, they are offering the “Frida Foundation Margarita.” A portion of the profit from each margarita sold goes directly to community non-profits assisting woman and children in need. By supporting women who, like Kahlo, are attempting to overcome adversity, they are indeed using her name honorably and well. There has been some controversy surrounding the use of the artist’s name to brand a for-profit product with some groups saying that Ms. Kahlo would have been appalled. However, by all accounts, she never took herself too seriously, and may have even found the irony amusing. It is this writer’s belief that any venue, which acts as a catalyst to attract a wider audience to her work, will ultimately produce a positive outcome. Coupled with the aid that will come to those in need from the sales of her “foundation’s” margarita, Frida Kahlo Tequila becomes an idea that’s easy for anyone to swallow. l

a long awaited vintage emerges a refined red spreads its wings It’s no surprise that Roberto Cavalli used the butterfly to represent the third vintage of his Cavalli Tenuta Degli Dei 2006. Like this fascinating creature, this fine Italian wine took time to reach maturity and the result is the emergence of an exceptionally elegant vino. Three years of rest and the fruit of two different vineyards went into the making. Grapes from both Panzano in Chianti and the foothills of Florence were used to create a wine with great complexity and character. Cavalli Tenuta Degli Dei 2006 harmonizes the aromas of aromatic herbs, balsamic overtones, and fruit with balanced acidity, firm structure, velvety tannins, and an extremely long finish. Currently, 25,000 bottles of this elegant masterpiece are being released to world markets. Look for it at your local fine wine dealer. In usual over-the-top style his debut wine, the 2004 Roberto Cavalli Selection, a Tuscan IGT made with the assistance of Italian wine guru Carlo Ferrini, is available in special leopard print gift boxes. In addition to the specially designed bottle, the box contains two ornate black goblets. Cheers to designer fashion and wine! This Cavalli gift box is 599 euros through caffegiacosa.com. l

chardonnay proceeds fight breast cancer Chardonnay pairs well with seafood and poultry. However, ONEHOPE, a California wine company knows that it also pairs especially well with breast cancer awareness. Why? The answer is simple. Women buy two bottles of Chardonnay for every one bottle of all other varietals combined. Because women are the most active supporters in the breast cancer community, it made sense to pair the pink ribbon with the most popular varietal wine for women. Women in the U.S. have a one in eight lifetime chance of developing breast cancer, a statistic that ONEHOPE finds unacceptable. In fact, it was a friend’s fight against cancer that brought together the company’s founders. ONEHOPE isn’t a charity itself, but a for-profit enterprise that donates 50% of profits to partner charities through the creation of cause specific varietals of wine. Other causes supported by their wine include aids, autism, our troops and our planet. Their Chardonnay is $18.99 per bottle, $120 for a 5-bottle wooden gift box, or $227.88 per case. alicia keys’ strokes of genius The masses show no signs of “Fallin’” out of love with Alicia Keys.

Since 2001, when Keys’ debut album “Songs In A Minor” signaled the arrival of a major young talent on the music scene, her appeal has blossomed exponentially. And – in the process of bagging 12 Grammy Awards, 11 Billboard Music Awards, 5 American Music Awards, 14 NAACP Image Awards, and dozens more such accolades – she’s managed to avoid the typical hazards that commonly cripple skyrocketing artists’ careers. Keys, 29, is firmly grounded in her art and her charitable endeavors. Growing up in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, she’s said, filled her with empathy for poor and abused youth, as well as drug addicts, single mothers and under-appreciated teachers. And her music speaks to the yearnings for love and respect that are felt universally. She cavorts with pop culture royalty _ Jay-Z, Beyonce, Oprah, Bono _ while maintaining a common touch. Top fashion designers like Giorgio Armani, Zac Pozen and BCBG’s Max Azria clamor to dress her, but Keys seems to delight more in the forthcoming launch of her jewelry line featuring precious metals inscribed with inspirational messages. It’s not uncommon for Keys to make impromptu visits to inner-city schools to applaud students who can’t afford tickets to her sold-out concerts. She also played a role in financing the groundbreaking Broadway production, “Fela!” that took New York by storm and is now poised to wield its rhythmic power throughout Europe.

Keys Performs ‘Minor’ Miracles model does best: lend support to worthy causes. Partial proceeds from that auspicious occasion will benefit the “20 Centers for 2010” charity that hopes to erect free medical centers across the beleaguered continent. Her philanthropy doesn’t stop there. For nearly as long as she’s been famous, Keys has operated a foundation called “Keep A Child Alive” that supports families and orphans in

AIDS-ravaged Africa. Keys doesn’t only attend and support charity efforts; she inspires them. “Keep A Child Alive” has a better chance of spreading its impact to India now that one of the world’s top female cricket players says she’ll follow the artist’s lead. Ebony Jewel Rainford-Brent told the press in the Far East this spring that, “(Keys) is a great example of what someone can achieve through hard work, dedication, and embracing the talent she has been blessed with.”

She’s not averse to endorsing major brands like Vitamin Water and Yamaha, but Keys still stands on certain principles. Two years ago, for instance, she insisted that a cigarette company’s billboards to promote her in the Far East be taken down before she’d perform there. As if Keys needed any more confirmation of her piano-playing prowess, vocal virtuosity and humble humanitarian efforts, she had First Lady Michelle Obama as a guest at her spring concert in Washington, D.C. and was invited to perform at the President’s annual White House Correspondents dinner. On a superficial level: the radiant Keys exudes confidence in her physique; which defies society’s preference for “stick figure” personalities. As with everything else, Keys demonstrates how beauty is far more than skin deep. ●

Solid proof of that comes this summer, when the multi-faceted performer caps off a world tour in support of her fifth album, “The Element of Freedom”, with a featured opening ceremony performance on the planet’s most riveting stage: the World Cup in Soweto, South Africa.

n her first book SWINGING FROM MY HEELS: Confessions of an LPGA Star, Christina Kim serves as a witty 25-year-old tour guide for one of sport’s most fascinating and unexplored subcultures: the Ladies Professional Golf Association. She is a straight-shooter and tees up a frank accounting of lost loves, plane rides, rental cars, rotating caddies, rough final rounds, torn eyeballs and scandalous 7-irons that made her 2009 season so memorable. This boy crazy, hat crazy talented player dishes about life on the LPGA Tour where the competition is intense, endorsement money is spare and players actually root for their competitors. And as far as comparisons to the PGA Tour, there is no such thing as “equal pay” for equal play. Although Christina is a two-time winner on tour and a key member of the victorious U.S. Solheim Cup teams in 2005 and ’09, she is not a member of the super-wealthy sports elite. She doesn’t win every week; in fact, this book reveals her experience with a title drought that’s gone past four years and an extended slump hits her in the pocketbook. She is fearless, irreverent, controversial, and funny on the course and as an author. Christina writes about her body issues including her 40-pound weight loss in 2009 and the controversy stirred up by her nude, PG13 photo spread in ESPN Magazine. She also talks about being fined thousands of dollars for her overly exuberant on-course language, and getting booted off the LPGA’s player-director board. Christina has been one of the LPGA’s most popular players since 2003, her rookie year. She’s a friend with all the girls on tour. And no matter how she plays she can be counted on to stick around and sign autographs for her fans. This book takes you along on a captivating journey through her everyday life as a young golfer and her tour travels to Bankok, Singapore, Mexico City, Évian-les-Bains, New York, Japan, Milan, and Korea. It’s a fun read for anyone who wants to expand their golf library beyond how to books. ●

Golf blogger Patricia Hannigan has a driving ambition: to get each of her thousands of female followers to play like a girl. She insists, it’s the way for a woman to excel at golf—and, every bit as important, to have a lot of fun doing so. Hannigan entertainingly dispenses advice that’s sure to be useful to any woman intent on securing membership in the “boys’ club” called golf. Rather than focus on technique this little book teaches attitude, demonstrating how a gal who’s passionate about golf can use her feminine wiles and womanly style to her distinct advantage on the course.

titania golf Making Titanic Strides in Golfwear [by Kevin B. Johnston]

Vonny Collison went from “golf widow” to golf mogul in 13 years. “I started playing golf in my homeland of Australia in 1997 after my husband and I had been dating for two years and I realized I was becoming a ‘golf widow,’” Collison says. “I was always athletic and involved in many sports. I found playing golf to be very challenging yet rewarding. “It didn’t take long for me to realize that the golf fashion ‘down under’ was challenged. I wanted to continue wearing my trendy fashion-forward clothes on the course, so I began designing my own collection and started Titania Golf that same year.” Flash forward 13 years, and Titania is an integral part of women’s golfwear. “Titania Golf now has accounts from Australia to Alaska and everywhere in between,” Collison says. She adds, “As well as being represented in many high-end golf clubs and resorts throughout the world, Titania Golf is licensed with the LPGA, is an official merchandise vendor at the US Women’s Open, the Solheim Cup, the Safeway Classic, the Tour Cham-

pionship, the LPGA Classic, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the Tavistock Cup, and the Honda Classic, and is a national supplier to the Ritz Carlton.” Collison attributes this success to an intimate understanding of the woman golfer. “Being a golfer myself helps me understand the women that wear Titania Golf apparel. We are athletic, take pride in our appearance, like to be unique and fashion forward, and want a comfortable, functional, durable product.” But her empathy with her customers is not the whole secret to her success. “I feel my designs have all that, plus the added edge. Unique details I like to call them, that will make you stand out in a crowd.” And she doesn’t stop there. She has championed new materials. “We have a special sports fabric that is made exclusively for Titania Golf that we have been using in many of our tops for the past 10 years, long before the sports fabric craze even began.” None of that matters, however, if the clothes aren’t part of the game, or rather, if the game isn’t part of the clothes. Collison makes sure her designs make

playing easier. “All of our bottoms have four tee holders in each of the front pockets and the back pockets are designed to fit a score card,” she says. Inspiration from golf is not all that Collison draws on in her designs. She says nature guides her thinking. “When I design a new collection I usually get my inspiration from nature. “Growing up in Surfers Paradise, seascapes lead to spring/summer collections like Aquatic Curl and Aqua Marine, and landscapes lead to winter/fall collections like Tribal Dance and Australian Art.” Then there are some flashier influences. “Screen printing techniques with rhinestone embellishment give my newest collections, The Monarch and Trinity, that added edge, bling! This combination is unique, trend setting, fashion forward, and sets the stage for the future direction of Titania.” That future direction is balanced by Collison’s reflection on how far she has come. “When I reflect on the last 13 years I am very proud of what I have been able to accomplish, but I am so excited about the future and seeing more and more women “Bling it On” with Titania Golf.” l

Vonny Collison, founder of Titania, began golfing in Australia, but now enjoys designing and golfing in Florida.

birdy & grace Winning is in the details [by Kevin B. Johnston]

Being

Sharon Sunoo searched through pro shops, but couldn’t find clothes she liked. “I started Birdy and Grace because I could never wear the stuff I was finding for women golfers,” she says. “I teamed up with Teress Stephens, and we’ve been together since the beginning. We shared design sensibilities. It’s very much a collaborative effort.” Apparently their customers like the collaboration. Sunoo says some shipments of their designs have sold before the clothes get put on the shelves. “Certain items blew out. Customers were taking then out of the box before anyone in the store could tag them.” She attributes this appeal to the company’s attention to detail. “We have found an aesthetic of novelty by focusing on the details. We use crystals, embroidery and nail heads, as well as screen printing and special button treatments, even lace. And all of it fits in with country club dress codes. We’re going to be launching some really cool trousers with some interesting detail.” Apparently, the designs are catching on. “We tripled in sales volume last year, and in January and February of this year, we have

more sales than all of last year,” Sunoo says. She adds, “Compared to this time last year, we’re just a hundred times more busy.” Perhaps part of the appeal is the company’s claim that these designs make a woman look and feel five pounds lighter. According to the Birdy and Grace website, “Pocket placement, length of plackets, incorporating novel details, choice of color of our clothes, all flatter the woman’s body whether she’s playing golf or not.” Sunoo adds that there is another factor that attracts women to the clothes. “I think it’s the level of sophistication we offer. “ She adds, “We get calls saying, ‘Where have you been?’” This success has encouraged the company to launch a national campaign. “We’re launching a national search for the next Birdy and Grace top model,” Sunoo says. “We’re going to find our Birdy and Grace Girl.” She confesses that running her own clothing firm leaves her less time for the game she loves. It wasn’t always like that. When she was dating the man who would become her husband, “We would go on all these great golf

trips. Who wouldn’t want to go? I started practicing at the driving range at Chelsea Piers. Their automatic ball feeders are addictive. I took to it. It was so much fun.” Not that she’s so busy that she can’t sneak away to get a few rounds in once in awhile. “We live 30 seconds from our neighborhood country club,” she says. “It’s part of our life.” Sunoo believes that golf is a part of a lot of women’s lives, and that women are demanding something new in golf attire. “Our customers really care about the way they look. “I think they have good taste! It’s really humbling to see a woman wearing Birdy and Grace. She knows the market and what’s out there, and she’s choosing our brand and bringing that to her golf game.” She goes on, “Our designs work with your golf game, but you can wear them when you go out with your friends. Our customers are finding other ways to wear our shirts other than just on the golf course. Like at resorts, for example.” Sunoo thinks that her expansion may be partially due to repeat customers. Why? “A girl can’t have enough tops,” she says. l

greg norman collection The line gets a new infusion of style [by Kevin B. Johnston]

Dana Coppolino was a designer before golfer, which is somewhat rare in golf

80 |

Dana Coppolino’s passion for fashion and golf go together. “I took my first lesson while on vacation in Florida at the Breakers about eight years ago. I had a great teaching instructor. He told me to ‘grip it and rip it’ and I was hooked,” she says. On the fashion side, she came to the Greg Norman Collection via other companies. “My first job was with Ralph Lauren as an Assistant Designer for Men’s Knits and Sweaters. Next, I went to Nautica (still designing menswear). While at Nautica I took my first golf lesson - I loved the game, but couldn’t find anything that I liked to wear. This is how my interest in women’s golfwear began. I went on to launch a boutique line of women’s apparel called Verdina in 2005, and have been involved with women’s golfwear since then.” Coppolino thinks fashion is integral to golf. “You have to look good to play good!” she says. “The clothing is designed to be both fashionable and functional. Our customer wants to wear an outfit that’s stylish, and also golf appropriate. She enjoys dressing for the game.”

Women may enjoy dressing for the game, but Coppolino enjoys dressing them. “I’m really passionate about what I do. I love combining fashion and sport. I focus on how the garments fit the body, and try to make sure each piece is as flattering as possible.” She continues, “The main challenge is ensuring each garment is truly golf appropriate - collared tops, appropriate bottom lengths, proper pocket placement, and finding feminine functional fabrications.” Having her finger on the pulse of women’s golfwear has given her insights into the future of women’s golf. “I think more and more women are taking up the game, and they are starting at younger ages.” According to Coppolino this is no accident. “Courses have become more women friendly, and I think the game is overall less intimidating to women than it’s been in the past.” This surge of women’s interest in golf is paralleled by an interest in women’s golf fashion. “The relaunch of the women’s collection has created a sales boost in that category,” Coppolino says She doesn’t see this positive

trend ending soon. “I’m excited to see how the game of golf progresses with regard to women - There’s still a lot of growth opportunity on the women’s side. It’ll be fun to watch the game continue to gain popularity among women.” To capitalize on this popularity, the company is branching out into other areas. “For 2010, we’ve launched a new outerwear collection as well as an accessory license for continued growth,” says Coppolino. And there are clothing innovations to come. “Fall 2010 is made up of three collections. Southampton - this has a preppy look with a modern feel. Oxford Street - this is a black and white group with traditional fall patterns done in a fresh, edgy way. Paradise Island - this is our resort inspired group - calming light blue contrasted with chocolate brown and sunlight yellow accents.” Coppolino says women’s golf— and women’s golfwear—can appeal to all ages. “The great thing about golf is that multiple generations can come together and play age is not a factor. And, the earlier someone gets into it, the longer they can enjoy playing.” [ShopAtShark.com] l

The event kicked off with “The Red Carpet Match-Up Party, “ a lavish event held at the luxurious 5-star Iberostar Hotel & Resort in Montego Bay, where the girls smiled for the cameras at the same time they were preparing to turn friends into enemies in picking who they wanted to take on. Pro-Am Tournaments dominated the next two days before the elite class of female golfers hit the green for First Round Tee Times. Played out over two days, the Mojo 6 included more than 30 six-hole matches in 30 hours. An impressive field of 16 players was reduced to a thrilling quarter final match of the best females on the course: Amanda Blumenherst played with Brittany Lang; Na Young Choi clashed with Suzann Pettersen; Tournament winner Anna Nordqvist battled with fan favorite, the effervescent Christina Kim and a focused Christie Kerr squared off with the young, fashionable Beatriz Recari. And in the end it came down to the final hole, as All-American rookie Amanda Blumenherst faced off against former major LPGA champion, Anna Nordqvist, who bested the rookie 1-up over the final, tension-filled six holes at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Third place went to Na Yeon Choi of Korea and Christie Kerr of the USA placed fourth bringing to an end the first annual Mojo6 LPGA Tournament. Raceway Golf is a totally new and exciting concept in the world of golf that preserves the fundamentals of the game, while adding cumulative scoring and the opportunity to choose your opponent. If the traditional 18-hole tournament is a marathon, then Raceway Golf is a sprint. “The incredibly unique format of this week’s event guarantees you will witness a level of spirit and competition like never before,” noted LPGA Commissioner, Mike Whan, before the event. The competition was truly fierce, with some major players starting out at the First, Second and Third round Tee Times. Kristy McPherson, Song-Hee Kim, Brittany Lincicome, Morgan Pressel, Mariah Stackhouse, Yani Tseng, Angela Stanford and Sophie Gustafson all were in great form, yet they did not qualify for the Quarter Final Matches on the following day. Even those that did not advance to the finals were all in great spirits. Jamaica’s Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, the Honorable Babsy Grange, who made the presentation to the beaming winner Anna Nordqvist said, “Jamaica is the envy of the whole Caribbean. It’s really wonderful to show how teamwork is effective, with all the parties working together. We started with a dream and now we have the top female players in the world to make it to Jamaica.” Grange later invited all the players to come back, “Once you come to Jamaica you’ll know it’s the most fantastic piece of rock you’ll ever experience. We welcome you to come back, even when you are not playing - come to relax and enjoy our warm hospitality.” Several Jamaican charities benefited from this prestigious golf tournament. Joy Young-Stephenson, co-founder of Mojo Marketing & Media, the company that organized the event, said that the Jamaica Public Service School Lunch Program teamed up with the the Jamaica Golf Association and the Ministry of Youth, Culture & Sports Kids Program, as beneficiaries. “The Trelawny Sports Stadium in rural Jamaica will also benefit,” said Young-Stephenson. “They need light and activities for the youth in that area of the country. So, many entities stand to benefit and I hope Jamaica will benefit on a larger scale and create interest worldwide. By that I mean investments and real estate, so that everyone can be aware of what our community has to offer.” ” l

GOLF’S MARIAH ON THE RIGHT COURSE With a famous first name and a career path laid out like a pavement of gold, 16-year-old golf prodigy Mariah Stackhouse takes everything in stride, always with a calm demeanor and extremely focused on her game. As one of the 16 female elite players that participated in the Mojo6 Woman’s Golf Tournament in Jamaica, Mariah was the youngest player and clearly one of the favorites. “Everyone is following her game and the other players really look out for her like a little sister,” said one of the excited spectators that followed the tournament. “My goal here was to win a hole, and I accomplished that after I played the first and second matches. I’ve been able to hold my own playing with the top female golfers,” beamed the young star, who has been labeled the `female Tiger Woods’. “It’s the first time I’ve played with these girls and I’m extremely pleased with how I played. I love the course, it’s the fastest green I’ve ever played on and even with the wind affecting putting and ball tracking, it was great playing with the pros....Christina Kim is great, she’s kinda mothering me here. Kristy is very nice and offered me advice. These are all great professional women!” Mariah, who is still in high school said she’ll definitely be going to college and balance a career as a professional golfer, “I want to study business management or medicine. Bill Murray, too. Even shock-rocker Alice Cooper has hopped aboard the bandwagon. The activity in question isn’t some new-age diet craze, a cultish religious ritual, or the latest fashion fad. No, these seemingly disparate celebrities have something else in common: They all host charity golf events. alle

And you thought politics made strange bedfellows. Halle, Bill and Alice have plenty of company, too, among the elites of film, music, sports and business. Long a magnet for stars of all stripes, golf has become every A-lister’s favorite fundraising tool. It’s easy to see why. Golf has proven power to attract cash for causes. A recent study found the game contributes a staggering $3.5 billion annually to charity through nearly 150,000 events. Golf outreach touches practically every segment of charitable giving, from cancer research to inner-city education to support for military families. Of course, having legions of high-profile ambassadors never hurts.

GOLF GRIPS HOLLYWOOD

You can’t swing a 9-iron in Tinsel Town without hitting a civicminded celeb. Bing Crosby and Bob Hope blazed a trail in the 1940s. The on- and off-screen pals hosted annual gatherings pairing pro golfers with famous duffers on scenic California courses – a combination that proved immensely popular. Bing and Bob have given way to a new generation of golfing do-gooders, and it’s not just the outfits that have changed. Women, once a rare find on the links, now take to the fairways in droves. Especially when there’s a worthy cause to support. Berry, the Oscar-winning actress, hosts an annual golf tournament benefiting the Jenesse Center, which helps families victimized by domestic violence. Berry’s sisters-in-arms include Catherine Zeta Jones, Eva Longoria Parker and Jane Seymour; they’ve all used golf to promote issues close to their hearts. Not to be outdone, their male counterparts regularly light up the charity golf circuit. Murray has practically made golf his second career, delighting (and sometimes plunking) fans at numerous celebrity-centered outings. Each year, Bill and Brian Doyle Murray – alongside their four less-famous siblings – team up for the Murray Brothers Caddyshack Charity Golf Tournament; proceeds for children’s healthcare and education have exceeded $1 million since 2001. Will Ferrell, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Douglas, Joe Pesci, George Lopez, Don Cheadle, Cameron Diaz, Angie Everhart, Catherine Bell, Jessica Alba, Cheryl Ladd, Tea Leoni... all golfers who give through the game. .

THE SWEET SOUNDS OF GOLF

A well-struck drive is music to the ears of recording artists from every genre and generation. The who’s-who includes Hootie & the Blowfish, hosts of the annual Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am. Every April, Hootie (aka Darius Rucker) and the boys always snag a boat full of pro golfers headed from Augusta to Hilton Head, S.C., then match them with actors, athletes and other stars to raise funds for the state’s less-fortunate youth. Justin Timberlake has forged a strong association with golf in recent years. The pop sensation lends his name to the PGA Tour’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, and even owns a course, Mirimichi, in Memphis. Timberlake’s a pretty good stick, too, sporting a single-digit handicap. Clean-cut chaps like Rucker and Timberlake fit snugly with golf ’s country club image, but the long-haired likes of Neil Young and Willie Nelson aren’t left out in the cold. Neither are the ladies. Celine Dion is actively involved with her family’s charity, which raises funds for disadvantaged kids with a yearly tournament at Celine’s own golf club in Montreal. As for Alice Cooper, turns out he’s a nice guy after all. Since 1997, Cooper has held a pro-am benefiting Solid Rock, a Christian (yep) organization aiding Arizona teens

Halle Berry, Ambassador for the Callaway Golf Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation

Ovarian cancer remains the most deadly of the gynecologic cancers. That’s why the Callaway Golf Foundation, the Entertainment Industry Foundation and Halle Berry have joined together to bring awareness and funds to the cause. Through $2 million in donations to EIF’s Women’s Cancer Programs, the Callaway Golf Foundation Women’s Cancer Initiative, established at leading cancer institutions nationwide, works to fast-track breakthrough treatments and tests to beat this disease. Until there is an early detection test for ovarian cancer, we urge women to become educated about this disease. Know your risk. Get involved.

cash of the titans

Business moguls are among the world’s most passionate golfers, but Donald Trump stands alone in his devotion to the game. Just ask him. For all his bravado, “the Donald” has championed charity through golf for many years. The Golf Channel program “Donald J. Trump’s Fabulous World of Golf ” pits big shots like John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Mark Wahlberg head-to-head, with prize money going to – you guessed it – their beneficiaries of choice. Other tycoons who mix golf with giving include Augusta National members Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. And while economic troubles have caused many high-profile execs to curtail their play, having the CEO show up at charity outings is still considered sound PR.

Donald Trump, top, is known for big golf events such as the Trump Million Dollar Invitational and for supporting charity. The Trump National Golf Club of Los Angles gave $4.2 million to charitable causes in 2009. Many sports super stars such as Emmitt Smith and Tony Romo, of Dallas Cowboy fame are players. Michael Jordan, left, hosts an annual Celebrity Invitational, which attracts a large following and is known for its big checks.

World-class athletes gravitate to golf like teen girls to the Jonas Brothers. (Also golfers, by the way.) And while sports stars have been known to dispense with discretionary cash on friendly wagers, they’re extremely generous when it’s time to tee it up for charity. Baseball and hockey players often make the best golfers (see Grant Fuhr, Rick Rhoden). And quarterbacks seem to have the knack, evidenced by Dallas signal-caller Tony Romo’s flirtation with U.S. Open qualifying. Super Bowl champion Drew Brees not only plays golf, he headlines the Cox Celebrity Golf Classic benefiting his Brees Dream Foundation. Basketball does its fair share, too. Michael Jordan delivered more than $500,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and 42 other charities following his Celebrity Invitational in the Bahamas this year. Mike enlisted the help of a few friends, namely Julius Erving, Alonzo Mourning and Penny Hardaway. And that’s just the hoopsters.

PRO TOURS SHARE THE WEALTH

Indeed, corporate America considers golf good business, even in bad times. All but a handful of events on this year’s PGA Tour schedule boast title sponsors. That firepower has enabled the Tour to generate nearly $1.5 billion for charity since 1938, when a $10,000 check from the Palm Beach Invitational marked the first donation of its kind. The LPGA has contributed nearly $200 million over the past 29 years. The players themselves are actively involved. Veteran pro Joe Ogilvie has provided hands-on help in New Orleans and other areas hit by natural disasters, while Stewart Cink’s “Twee Off ” Challenge raised more than $78,000 for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta via Twitter. PGA pros even donned pink at the Crowne Plaza Colonial the past two years, in support of the “Pink Out” initiative benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s breast cancer advocacy. On the ladies’ side, the LPGA launched its “Outside the Ropes” program in 2009, elevating players’ outreach efforts to a new level. Activity has been robust. One group of LPGA stalwarts planted endangered species of trees on a course in Rio de Janeiro in observance of Atlantic Rainforest Day. Others have visited cancer patients, made deliveries for Meals on Wheels, and pounded nails for Habitat for Humanity. l

The unsung heroes of golf ’s vast charity efforts may be the wives of PGA Tour pros. Since its inception in 1988, the PGA Tour Wives Association has done remarkable work for needy children and families through volunteer outreach and fundraising. The non-profit organization’s recent initiatives included “Operation Literacy,” a campaign to foster improved reading and writing skills, and “Blessings in a Backpack,” which sends food home with children on Fridays. In 2009, the PGA Tour Wives Association donated to 49 different charities, including Blue Star Families (Alexandria, Va.), the Domestic Violence Project (Canton, Ohio) and the Happily Ever After League (Scottsdale, Ariz.). The wives are so dedicated to charity that many are involved with projects outside the association. In March, a group led by Heather Crane, wife of Tour pro Ben Crane, took on an especially challenging mission, traveling to Southeast Asia to raise awareness of child sex trafficking. The trip was an eye-opener for all involved. Joining Crane were Dowd Simpson, wife of Webb Simpson, and Athena Perez, Pat’s spouse. Working with Love146, an organization that seeks to end child sex slavery worldwide, the women visited Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines for a first-hand glimpse at the physical, mental and emotional havoc wrought by the exploitation of young girls. Back in the U.S., Tour wives are constantly busy helping society’s less fortunate. The association hosts a variety of fundraisers including auctions, wine tastings, fashion shows, cookbook sales and, of course, a golf tournament. This year, golf was replaced by an event called “Shake, Rattle and Bowl,” which paired wives and girlfriends (“Strikes”) with their husbands and boyfriends (“Spares”) in a 30-team competition. The winner? Charity, of course. The bowl-a-rama raised more than $38,000 for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and other causes near and dear to the Tour wives’ hearts. Cindy Chenier’s Passion to Stop Domestic Violence One Putt at a Time. [by Mary Welch]

Cindy Chenier wants to give Oprah a hand. What? It seems like Oprah is helping the whole world,” she says.

thought her situation would change. “I’m a big believer in second chances.” Eventually with her family living in Atlanta (thanks to Hurricane Katrina), good friends and golf, she mustered the courage to get him out of her life and move on. “Golf was my outlet,” she says. “I could go on the golf course and know he wouldn’t be there. I felt safe.” By that time Chenier had started a marketing firm that specializes in fundraising, golf tournaments and event planning. Called The Lady and the Caddy, the firm pairs businesswomen with professional caddies who offer golf tips. Her premise was that many women – even those who manage hundreds of employees – are intimidated taking their first golf lesson. The purpose was twofold: help professional women learn golf in a safe, non-intimidating, fun way, and raise money for domestic violence shelters. The first year, the group raised $6,000 and attracted more than 100 women. The next tournament will be in September. l

| 93

Chenier’s work not only connects her to the victimized women and children, but it helps her reconcile her own past of domestic violence. Her release comes from helping others and for Chenier, golf has redemptive values. “I love the game and that we’re helping not only victims of domestic violence but stopping the next generation of abusers,” she says. “I’m 47 and I finally found my passion in life.” Although Chenier is quick to help others, she never envisioned herself a domestic violence crusader – until she became a victim herself. A native of New Orleans, Chenier moved to Atlanta for work. She met a nice guy who “could have been the One” and moved in with him. Then the cycle of domestic violence started. He began mentally abusing her. “He’d say I was ugly or wanted to know where I was at every moment. Then we had an argument and he hit me. I didn’t know what to do.” With no family and few friends, Chenier

The19thholemag.com

Chenier may not give cars or gift people with thousands of dollars of “her favorite things,” but Chenier is not only making people smile but also helping them get their lives back on track, especially children who live in a violent household. She founded It Stops with Me, a nonprofit that assists children, ages 6 through 17, deal with the emotional impact of violence through golf and other sports. “If a child sees his father hit his mother, chances are he will hit women. Or, if she’s a girl, will probably end up in an abusive situation,” Chenier says. “But if we can help that child see that violence is not an option – that it is not normal – then it can be stopped right there.” She works with 20 children from juvenile courts, foster homes and St. Jude’s Recovery Center, an Atlanta nonprofit that deals with addicts and their families. The program “shows them a different way of life,” she says. “They are growing as a person and getting counseling without even knowing it. They come in one way and leave another.” “They really become transformed and also learn to understand rules and make corrections,” she says. “There are rules to golf – to any game – and they learn to follow them, which is important. They end up talking about their lives and their problems without even knowing it. It changes them.” Held on her 11-acre property north of Atlanta, the program consists of children rotating through four different sports – horseback riding, soccer, tennis and – oh yes -- golf, all attended by a play therapist in two four-week summer sessions. The therapists help the children deal with their emotions of bitterness, self-esteem, anger and forgiveness. Her goal is to make the camps year-round, and then go national and internationally.

While most of today’s cruise ships offer amenities such as 24-hour buffets, Vegas-like entertainment, casinos, spas and fitness centers, pools, Jacuzzis, and activity camps for kids; Oasis of the Seas offers a lot more. The megaship boasts Central Park -- the first living park at sea, the first zip-line at sea, 28 loft suites with floor-toceiling windows, nine specialty restaurants with cuisine from burgers to fine dining, and an oceanfront amphitheatre. And like Royal Caribbean megaships before it Oasis also has an ice skating rink, casino, children’s play area, several night clubs, and a nine-hole miniature golf course. The ship sails to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and Nassau, Bahamas. And in May began alternating the Eastern Caribbean route with a Western one, with stops in Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; and their private island of Labadee, on the north coast of Haiti. The island has not been affected by the earthquake. However,

Royal Caribbean has been involved in relief efforts to Haiti. The cruise line has already delivered more than 1,700 pallets of food, including rice, dried beans, powdered milk, water, and canned goods. And 100 percent of net revenue to the destination will be donated to the relief effort. Passengers on any Royal Caribbean cruise can also get involved by donating to Food for the Poor’s Haiti Relief fund through their onboard cruise account, or by going to foodforthepoor.org/royalcaribbean. com. Royal Caribbean partnered with the government of Haiti to upgrade the amenities and activities for the Labadee port of call. Passengers can enjoy private beach cabanas, yoga classes, spa services, an expanded artisan market, and a new rollercoaster which offers a high speed ride through beautiful flora and rock formations. Royal Caribbean and Make-A-Wish Foundation grant cruise wishes for children with life-threatening diseases.

The19thholemag.com

[by jane collins] For the past decade Royal Caribbean International has been a corporate sponsor of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® program that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Royal Caribbean has welcomed aboard more than 1,300 children, fulfilling their wishes to go on a cruise. Michael Jordan, regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time, serves as Chief Wish Ambassador for the foundation. In this role he leads the Wish Ambassador Council and acts as a national spokesman. When Royal Caribbean officially launched the Oasis of the Seas in November 2009 Michael was onboard for the inaguaral event with a special group of Make-A-Wish Foundation® children and their parents. Even before being named as Chief Wish Ambassador, Jordan personally granted more than 175 wishes during the past two decades. “Granting children’s wishes through the Foundation has always been important to me,” said Jordan. “It’s a truly humbling, inspiring experience to

see the smiles and joy that granting a wish brings to a child. I want to help even more children have that same opportunity.” Since 1980 when the Make-A-Wish Foundation® began it has reached more than 174,000 children around the world. An estimated 27,000 children are diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions in the United States each year. Make-A-Wish is now one of the world’s most well-known charities. A network of nearly 25,000 volunteers serve as wish granters, fundraisers, special events assistants and in numerous other capacities to enable the foundation to grant wishes.

Michael Jordan, Chief Wish Ambassador for Make-A-Wish Foundation and some special MakeA-Wish children helped launch the Oasis of the Seas.

Cruises are a popular choice made by the foundation’s children and Royal Caribbean has carried them to destinations around the world and contributed more than $2.8 million in in-kind services and $372,000 in discount savings through its Wishes at Sea program. Through employee and passenger fundraising, it has also donated more than $480,000 and 460,000 frequent flier miles. <wish.org>l

However, if exercise and more exercise is on your agenda, you can choose from several different venues including a 24-hour fitness center, jogging trail, tennis and volleyball courts, and three outdoor pools. The resort, part of a 1,500-acre luxury community, located just 25 minutes from Curacao’s capital city of Willemstad, has everything including a dive and water sport facility. Wales and Scotland are both under the banner of the United Kingdom. Scotland is certainly better known to Americans and, of course, St. Andrew’s is the birthplace of golf. But Wales, the tiny country southwest of Scotland is claiming its fair share of fame this year as it is hosting the Ryder Cup for the first time. Wales is a fascinating country; here are a few statistics. There are 3 million people and 12 million wooly sheep that graze on the hillsides and cliffs. There are 200 golf courses, which rounds out to about a golf course for every 15,000 people – not bad for a country that is about the size of Massachusetts. There are more than 600 castles for those who need a history fix. Wales is a country for those who love the outdoors – as well as a nice warm pub. It’s as green as Ireland with three national parks and five areas of outstanding natural beauty. It’s the perfect country to hike, cycle, climb, or walk along the 755 miles of coastline and, of course, golf. Wales dates back to the Iron Age, which was before the Celts arrived in 500 to 100 BC. In 1,000 BC, groups were already farming Wales and mining its rich stock of copper ore. Although English is the preferred language, Wales is officially bilingual with about 20 percent still speaking Welsh. Legend has it that King Arthur fought a duel with an ogre on the side of Mount Snowdon, which at 3,560 feet is the highest point in both England and Wales. But this fall, all eyes will fall on this country of contrasts, as the Ryder Cup will set up home at Newport. Golf is a passion in Wales and its courses are as delightfully quirky as the country. Llanymynech Golf Club, for instance, has 15 holes in Wales and three in England. On the fourth hole, tee off in Wales, putt in England, and return to Wales three holes later! The Chirk Golf Centre has the second longest hole in Britain, measuring a daunting 1,992 feet. Or, if you want a challenge, play the Royal St. David’s Golf Club in Harlech. Only twice do successive holes proceed in the same direction. Let’s keep this going. A game at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club is rarely played without a wind. In 1990 the wind was so strong it blew the professional’s shop away, and the remains were found in the parking lot the next morning. Nefyn and District Golf Club has been compared with playing on the deck of an aircraft carrier – you can see the sea from every tee on the course. West Monmouthshire Golf Club has the highest course in Great Britain as recognized by the Guinness Book of Records. The 14th tee is the highest point standing at over 1,500 ft. above sea level. While all of these are great courses, all eyes this fall will be on The Celtic Manor Resort, which boasts two hotels and three championship courses. Home to the 2010 Ryder Cup, the Celtic Manor Resort, located in the south city of Newport, has 403 bedrooms and is set on 1,400 acres of panoramic parkland.

Opened in 2007, The Twenty Ten is the first course to have been designed specifically to host The Ryder Cup. In fact, more than $20 million has been invested in building the new course, clubhouse and surrounding infrastructure for the event. With water hazards on half its holes, the course presents many memorable challenges to golfers. Spectators are also supremely well catered to with three large viewing platforms below the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, which will allow them to view the action as it unfolds. The course is further complimented by The Twenty Ten clubhouse, which has a stunning location on the hillside overlooking the 18th green. These new additions sit alongside two other championship courses, a 330-room, 32-suite five-star resort hotel, an historic 19th century Manor House hotel with 70 bedrooms, 5 restaurants, two spas and health clubs. For those who like to celebrity watch, be on the lookout for Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is not only an avid golfer (along with her husband Michael Douglas) but is famed for her charity work, both in Wales and the United States. The Academy Award winning actress is the patron of Longfields Day Center, which is located in Swansea and provides support to adults (19 years of age and over) with any form of cerebral palsy or other related disabilities, and to their caregivers. The center provides a range of services that are tailored to meet the individual needs of its service-users. Ian Woosnam, captain of the successful European 2006 Ryder Cup, says golfing is special in his native country, and he is excited that the world will now discover it. “There is more to golf than playing. Our clubhouses share a special talent for hospitality – the friendly bar, the inevitable snooker table, the animated discussions,” he said. “People who think golf is a snobbish game should visit a Welsh clubhouse. Uplifted noses are not encouraged. We specialize more in laughter and banter. The clubhouses haven’t changed throughout the years and I hope they never will.” This fall may just be the perfect time to discover golf – Welsh style. l

Education has proven itself to incite change for hundreds of years. It is perfectly attainable for all that have been given an opportunity to learn.

This page: Noella is an international beauty, but she has the rare quality of being beautiful inside as well. Modeling has provided her with an enviable career, but helping others is what really makes her day. Opposite Page: When she believes in something, Noella speaks up lending her voice to the causes that are important to her

For Noella, who was sent to be educated in Europe at age 5 after her father died unexpectedly, Africa remains her motherland. Being re-introduced to her home, and her own mother, after 13 years of detachment is what inspired her life’s mission. To accomplish her goals three years ago she created the Georges Malaika Foundation (GMF) and has not wavered in her quest to grant the Congolese the educations they deserve but are blocked from attaining. (“Georges” is her late father’s first name; “Malaika” is the Swahili word for “angel”.) Noella has achieved a great deal for the foundation against tremendous odds. Late last year, she served as the welcoming ambassador for the DRC (formerly Zaire) as Khalilah Ali, Muhammad Ali’s daughter, visited to commemorate the event that put the impoverished nation on the world’s radar. While there, she and Khalilah laid the cornerstone for the first Georges Malaika school, a school building that represents real change that Congolese girls can believe in and which should open in late 2010 or early 2011. Sadly, Noella says that the girls who will one day attend the school are those who have been cast from their homes as a result of ‘sorcery’ accusations or a mere inability to be supported by their families. Through her fundraising efforts, even before the school opens, an inaugural “Sixteen Girls” group now receives full scholarships to attend the precious few private schools open to them in the Congo. “I always wanted to do something for my country and the best thing to do is to pass on to others the same opportunity that was given to me,” said Noella. “Education may be the solution to the majority of problems that are not only plaguing my country but the rest of the continent and the world,” she said. “Education has proven itself to

incite change for hundreds of years. It is perfectly attainable for all that have been given an opportunity to learn.” While Noella is definitely glamorous, she also has the kind of gritty determination that doesn’t take no for an answer. She has already succeeded in kicking down the proverbial doors of Parliament in her nation’s capitol of Kinshasa, to address the plight of young women and demand more access to schools for them. Although she speaks halting English, she had no trouble gaining the ears of the United Nations, telling the Creative Leadership Summit that the Congo’s in such dire straits now that the females born from incidents of rape are being raped, and that “the (restorative) investment has to be in education”. While being honored at last year’s U. N. Creative Leadership Summit in New York, she spoke up to express her shock at how contractors charge “in U.S. dollars, $600, $700 per (square foot)” for construction in the Congo. Newly wed to the entrepreneur and golf enthusiast James Masters, and expecting her first child this year, Noella says she’s on a brief “break” from modeling. But her foundation retains her full attention. Shortly after her honeymoon, Noella delved back into work; escorting a group of Columbia (N.Y.) University students to the Congo to help them learn how to spread the virtues of education in Third World countries. Though she’s not an avid golfer herself, Noella knows that golf tournaments are one of the strongest tools of fundraising and has visions of some day hosting a benefit tournament at the highly regarded resort in Lubumbashi, the Congo’s economic epicenter. Since her marriage to a golfer there’s every reason to believe she will received extra encouragement to bring this event to fruition. <gmalaikaf.org> and <noellacoursaris.com> l

Eric Raisina’s

collection chosen as part of Arise L’Afrique-a-Porter show Designer brings haute textures to NYC 2010 Fashion Week [by DOT ANDERSON ]

The19thholemag.com

Eric Raisina is one of those

designers able to transport his audience immediately into his own private universe, a space where texture reigns supreme. He began his foray into design and sewing in his native country of Madagascar, where using natural materials, such as silk, raffia, sisal, linen and cotton quickly became his trademarks. His Spring/Summer 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week was named ‘Honeymoon In Madagascar’ and was punctuated with innovative textures and rich colors inspired by his homeland. This was his first time for Raisina to show in New York at Bryant Park. His collections may be new to the runway here, but his textiles have been seen on Paris runways. After he graduated with a master’s degree from the Institut Francais De La Mode in 1999 he began entering his creations in the Haute Couture shows in Paris and was commissioned to create unique textiles for the fashion houses of Yves Saint-Laurent and Christian Lacroix. Interestingly, from a design standpoint, Raisina bypasses sketching and simply lets the unique qualities of his textiles inspire designs

from the materials themselves. In Madagascar his first award, which started his career path as a designer, was an award as a New Young Talent at the Fashion Festival and Textile Competition. As a result he was then able to study in Paris at the Duperré School where he excelled in the creation of textiles. His taste for exploration has led him to seek out new cultures and diverse techniques in Africa as well as in Asia. He currently lives in the Philippines where his passion and talent for style, continues to evolve, all the while staying true to his personal taste. It is here that he started his own workshop to train weavers, sewers, and embroiderers and here that he began to create new textures, colors, and unique weave patterns, such as Silk Fur and Natural Raffia lace. l

After high school there he studied abroad at the American InterContinental University in London. During his senior year he interned at Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. After launching his first collection, Siriano did a Fierce Mamas maternity line with Moody Mamas and in 2009 he was tapped to create a recurring line of highly innovative shoes and bags for Payless and makeup for Victoria’s Secret. Between regular design projects, he authored Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self. Siriano’s runway shows are highly anticipated and spring 2010 was no exception. Lara Miller’s

lara miller’s collection is gaining the attention of the contemporary woman who wants to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. No wonder, Miller’s namesake line is stylishly fashion forward and about as far removed from old style “granola” designs as you can get. However, the fabrics, pattern making and even the manufacturing are all handled in an eco-friendly manner. “I believe that it is my contemporary aesthetic helps educate my customers about sustainable design by initially creating interest and then, in turn, providing the information that can help them incorporate eco-friendly practices into their lifestyles,” Miller said. As a Lexus Hybrid Living Sustainable Partner, Miller participates in a number of events showcasing her garments while promoting environmental awareness. She has appeared on the Sundance Channel’s “Big Ideas for a Small Planet” as a spokesperson for the Lexus Hybrid Living program. “I extensively research each fiber that I use and make sure that my colors are exclusively from lowimpact reactive dyes, using the least amount of petroleum by-products and water possible,” said Miller. “My garments incorporate SKAL certified organic cotton, hemp, vegan ahimsa peace silk, organic wool, linen, lyocell, flax and soy fibers, hand-loomed bamboo, and recycled organic cotton.”

Born and raised in Chicago, Miller says that her collections are strongly influenced by the city’s architectural and cultural landscape. They also show Miller’s fascination with both the built and moving form. Her modular designs are artistry in motion that is at once both playful and sophisticated. Miller has been named “Top 40 Under 40” by Crain’s Chicago Business as well as “Indie Designer of the Year” by Chicago Magazine. Her work has been featured on Elle. com, DailyCandy.com, The Today Show, and in publications such as Italian Vogue, Lucky Magazine, W, and The New York Times, among many others. Miller also serves as the Executive Director of the Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) which provides emerging Chicago-based designers with the resources, including workspace, business training, and mentoring, to launch their careers. Now, that’s giving back to the community as well as the planet. <Laramiller.net> l

I’m always drawn to vintage elements, but I am constantly inspired by different things.” What’s next for Boxing Kitten? “I don’t want to divulge anything before its solid,” said Lake, “but you can expect more collections, more collaborations, and I would also love to do a men’s line, but that is very far into the future. l

maya lake has a strong point of view that’s unique in the marketplace. She describes her Boxing Kitten line of dresses and separates as having an “ethnic rockabilly” look. If that’s a new term for your fashion vocabulary hang onto it. Lake’s vintage-inspired silhouettes in a wild mix of tribal fabrics are trend-setting. Her bold, yet demure, retro yet edgy creations with a global vibe are being worn by A List celebs such as Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Solange Knowles, Fergie, and Erykah Badu. Lake is a self-taught designer and entrepreneur who was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in New Jersey. “Although I was designing custom clothing for a couple of years before, my first collection was for Spring 2009,” said Lake. Her first show in New York was for the Resort 2010 collection, which was on a rooftop in Soho. “I was so happy to show in New York, and the response and turn out was really amazing.” When asked, which came first the desire to design a vintage inspired line or the desire to utilize tribal style prints, Lake said that the fabric [known as Ankara, or Wax Hollandais] is what initially inspired her. “But with that said there is no way I could have done one without the other. In the U.S., she continues to extend golf ’s reach to minorities and others, telling her story and her father’s to people everywhere. Today Powell is the LPGA/PGA Head Golf Professional at Clearview Golf Club, which in 2001 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of the Interior. What took Powell awhile to understand, though, was the reason her father had built Clearview Golf Club in 1946. The grandson of Alabama slaves and a World-War II veteran, William Powell had encountered racial prejudice so austere that he was denied access to public golf courses. As a result, he became – and remained at his death last year at age 93 – the only African-American to design, construct, own and operate a golf course in the United States. A PGA Life Member, he became an ambassador for inclusion and diversity in golf, with Clearview Golf Club as the center and symbol of his ideals. “My father was extraordinary,” Powell says. “He wanted to change society, and he did so through golf. His aspirations were grander than golf. He wanted to make a difference in the world.” Entering and winning her first amateur tournament at age twelve, Powell went on to achieve much success in the game, although she too experienced racial prejudice. “I found golf to be a safe haven,” says Powell. “I got joy out of it and realized I could excel.” Powell attended Ohio University and The Ohio State University, serving as captain of the women’s golf team at each. In 1967 she became only the second African-American woman ever to play on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, where she competed for 13 years. flash of light followed by a great shadow covered the entire earth.

When

daylight returned all the chocolate, coffee, red wine and golf courses had vanished.

Panic spread across the seven continents, but scientists discovered Lord Boredulum from the planet Dullsom was the fiend who had stolen our most precious treasures and transported them back to his planet.

The Garia Galaxians An elite group of heroes was assembled to hitch a ride on the last transport beam. They were allowed to take only two small vehicles and a single type of weapon. They knew exactly what they needed. They choose two Garia Golf Cars and four sets of clubs. The group was affectionately dubbed the Garia Galaxians. They sat in the Garia cars and disappeared into outer space.

The Garia— The Golf Car for Champions Moments later they arrived on the barren planet Dullsom. The Garia easily handled the terrain. After all, it’s manufactured at the Valmet Automotive Factory in Finland, where the Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman are built. The aluminum profiles in the frame are built by the same manufacturer of profiles for Aston, Jaguar and Volvo. Fighting intergalactic villains can be exhausting, but the Garia’s advanced technology and luxury coachwork made driving effortless so our heroes could rest up for the ultimate showdown. They planned their next move as they sat on the Garia’s hand stitched seats and sipped cold drinks taken from the Garia’s Waeco refrigerator.

Lord Boredulum spotted them from a distance. Every Garia Golf Car can be personalized by color and decals throughout the vehicle. Boredulum was impressed by the Garia; it’s a complete reinvention of the traditional golf cart. The Garia Galaxians pulled their golf bags from the special back storage space and swung their clubs. Lord Bordulum hid behind the Tower of Despair and offered a deal. He agreed to return all the chocolate, red wine, coffee and golf courses in return for six personalized Garia golf cars, one for each of his moods. The Garia Galaxians agreed and they returned to Earth victorious. The intergalactic thief was not completely honest. He kept a Scottish Golf Course, six cases of Bordeaux, and a truck load of dark chocolate and fair trade coffee, but that is a small price to pay for peace. As for the Garia Galaxians‌they are driving their Garias on golf courses, peaceful beaches and quiet communities around the world as they wait for their next great challenge. l
