Storm Season is Here–
Don’t Be Left In The Dark With
increasingly volatile weather events, extended power outages threaten the North Shore
Y
ou may remember last summer’s extended power outage. Thousands of North Shore families waited days, some more than a week, for power to be restored. Air conditioners sat idle, food spoiled in warm refrigerators and basements flooded due to stalled sump pumps. The year before, the North Shore sat in the dark on at least two other occasions. In July 2011, a summer storm knocked out power to 280,000 homes in the northern suburbs. In September, 1,400 Highland Park residents lost power again, increasing residents’ frustration. These increasingly volatile weather events, paired with an overburdened and outdated power grid, make outages throughout the year inevitable. As 108 million viewers saw this past February, even the biggest professional football game of the year is not immune. It can happen anywhere, at any time. When a power outage lasts a few minutes, it’s an
10
inconvenience. When it stretches to several hours, it’s annoying. If the outage stretches for days, it becomes quite costly and potentially dangerous. Disabled security systems, non-functional medical equipment, dead cell phones and the inability to conduct business or do school work are real concerns. Losing power to your home for an extended period of time can have major impacts on your income, peace of mind, or even the survival of a loved one. To avoid these issues, many North Shore home-
NORTH SHORE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2013
owners have taken matters into their own hands by having an automated standby generator installed. These luxury appliances look similar to a large air conditioning unit, blending into the background of your home’s exterior. They are reliable, they are safe, they are quiet, and they are surprisingly affordable. Automated standby generators provide power by using the same natural gas line already available at your home and are always waiting, always watching. In the event that the power goes out, the generator kicks in automati-
cally within twenty seconds, keeping critical aspects of your home functioning smoothly. They are also convenient. If you happen to be out when the power fails, your home is still protected. Your security system remains operational. Your medications remain refrigerated. Your garage door still opens when you return home. And thanks to remote monitoring capabilities, your system can be observed and managed, if necessary, by a system expert miles away. While we all hope to avoid losing power this year, there is only one way homeowners can guarantee it. A good resource to turn to for assistance is Get Power Now! Owner and licensed electrician Steve Kruzich specializes in automated standby generators and has 10 years experience installing every major brand, including industry leader Generac®, throughout the Chicagoland area Contact Steve at 630.742.4263, or visit www.GetPowerNow.com.

s temperatures rise this season, you may find yourself struggling with summer insomnia. You toss and turn, trying to find a cool section of sheet to help provide some relief, but it’s no use — your bedroom is still uncomfortable. However, chances are that your night’s sleep can be reclaimed, thanks to a process that can seal gaps in your home’s ductwork and allow heated and cooled air to better reach those rooms farthest from the furnace. Joseph St. Pierre, of Aeroseal Solutions explains, “Homeowners typically call us because they want to better cool a particular room, but they are amazed by other benefits of Aeroseal as well.” While gaps and holes in a home’s ductwork are known to waste cooled air, create higher energy costs and add more stress on furnaces and air conditioning systems, most home owners don’t realize they also lead to in-home air pollution. “Dust and particulates can infiltrate duct work and pollute a home’s

breathable air”, St. Pierre says. “90% of dust blowing through the home is tiny particles of insulation, so homeowners take a double hit by wasting 30-40% on their energy costs and breathing in pollutants and allergens.” The Aeroseal system effectively seals a home’s ductwork from the inside by using a clean, safe material that is guaranteed for 10 years. The four to eighthour process is monitored by a sophisticated computer system that when completed, provides certified reports to the homeowner on ductwork leaks before, during and after the application. Originally invented at The University of California,

Berkeley, Aeroseal is so innovative that it won the “Energy 100” award from the Department of Energy and homes that get their ducts sealed with Aeroseal qualify for up to $500 in federal tax credits and up to an additional $500 in rebates from NorthShore Gas. Furthermore, “The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that in the Midwest, homeowners who invest in the Aeroseal process will save between $300 and $500 per year on utility costs alone, not counting the reduced wear and tear on your heating and cooling systems,” explains Lauren Schubert, Marketing Coordinator for Aeroseal Solutions. Where in the World is
Your Self?
Early Childhood Education with an Individual Touch
E
ven in today’s modern culture, a woman is still expected to first and foremost play the role of caretaker. That is a wonderful and admirable part of yourself to honor; your maternal instincts are satisfied, you feel wanted, needed and loved. But what about your Self? Constantly taking care PENNY BEITLER of others can make you feel depleted, tired and worn out— as if you’ve lost your identity. Labels such as wife, mother, volunteer, teacher and executive are demanding; but they are roles that you play, not an identity. YOU ARE MORE THAN YOUR ROLES It’s so easy to become totally identified with your roles that you forget about the most important part of your Self -- your center, your spirit. A role is a label for something that you do but not all of who you are. Feeling depressed, anxious, tired, irritable or just plain confused can be symptoms of feeling a loss of identity.
LOOK WITHIN These times offer opportunities to look within and nurture your spirit and reclaim your life. You cannot be truly present for yourself or others until you have awakened your own spirit. Your spirit is the real you, the light within you, and while it may be hard to recognize on your own, a good therapist can help you rediscover meaning before you’re completely depressed, depleted or lost. "Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside dreams; who looks inside awakes." Carl Jung Penny Powers Beitler, MS, LMFT , is a Licensed Psychotherapist in Northfield. She specializes in individual, couples and family therapy, with a focus on premarital, marital, divorce, anxiety and depression issues. hile it’s common knowledge that early education plays a vital role in a child’s future success, it’s also important to recognize that the needs of both preschool children and their caregivers are constantly changing. Programs that once were cutting edge can cease to be relevant unless kept up by an attentive and knowledgeable staff. For instance, the Preschool at North Shore Congregation Israel and The Goodman Center for Jewish Education recently revamped their curriculum to provide personalized, flexible options to best suit each child. Through their research, the preschool identified the need to provide local children with a class for those who have completed preschool, but who would benefit from an additional year of early education before entering kindergarten. The school developed a class called Marvelous Minds, which is taught by an early childhood expert who specializes in reading instruction and offers a curriculum that allows children to fine-tune their preschool skills. They also offer unique enrichment courses including, reading, science, yoga, Spanish, Math, Cooking and Shabbat celebration for those children who might benefit from a longer school day as well as traditional preschool classes with options to attend 3, 4 or 5 days a week. The schools’ research also revealed that there are few educational opportunities for young children on the weekends, when many of the older children are attending Sunday school. So they developed another new program for young preschoolers to learn about Jewish rituals, customs, values and holidays each Sunday. To learn more about The Preschool @ NSCI and the Goodman Center for Jewish Education and their 2013-14 school year call 847.835.0724 or visit www.thepreschoolatnsci.org or www.nsci.org. atural stone such as marble, granite, terrazzo, limestone and travertine may be durable, but it is not indestructible. Fortunately, because most problems are repairable, properly maintaining natural stone costs substantially less than replacing it. The addition of any one of these quality materials refines the surfaces of your home. Whether it’s in the foyer, kitchen, bathroom or fireplace, natural stone adds a beautiful and luxurious architectural element. Although beautiful, natural stone is susceptible to stains, spills and damages from everyday occurrences. In the kitchen, cranberry juice spills across the granite counter, leaving a reddish hue. A housekeeper using multipurpose cleaner diminishes a bathroom’s shine. A pebble caught in a guest’s shoe creates scratches throughout your marble flooring. Hard water in a shower causes the marble's finish to be dulled over time. However, scratches, dull spots and etches caused by chemicals or sharp objects can be honed and polished to their original shine. Regardless what problem you may encounter with your stone surfaces, there is a solution.

Preserving the Things that BY ILANA SEGAL ROBICSEK
Matter Most
A
t about this time last year I received a call from a young woman. Her grandfather, Jacques Levine, was turning 90 and the family wanted to commission a very special gift for him. Jacques, she explained, was born to immigrant parents who founded a slipper company bearing his name. When Jacques came of age he joined the family business and made his mark by creating many influential new styles and receiving industry-wide acclaim. Now in its fourth generation, the company is thriving and Jacques has much to be proud of and many wonderful memories to share. It was only fit that a gift to Jacques be as unique and special as the man himself. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many families wanting to preserve memories, pass down family history or create the ultimate tribute for the person who matters to them most. Some of these amazing subjects include a 40- yearold mom whose diagnosis of breast cancer inspired her to establish a national support organization; a Holocaust survivor who escaped Nazi Europe and found great success on American shores; a teenage girl inspired to collect and publish her family’s history in order to preserve it beautifully for generations to come; and a pillar of the community, whose children and grandchildren wanted to memorialize his civic contributions.

While these individuals may differ from one another, the projects all have a common purpose; they enable families to tell, document, and preserve the stories that matter most — stories of personal journeys, of professional achievements, of commitment to family, community, and society. These are the stories that weave together past, present and future. They define a family by creating an enduring legacy that touches, enriches, and roots the lives of those who follow. Art of Memory Press turns memories into legacies by recording stories, collecting photos and gathering meaningful keepsakes during a series of intimate sessions. After the interview sessions, the oral history is meticulously transcribed and edited, graphic materials are professionally digitized, and word and image are thoughtfully integrated into a commemorative, custom designed, deluxe linenbound volume. Jacques Levine’s granddaughter described their Art of Memory heirloom book as, “a meaningful and enduring account of Jacques’s life and a visually striking and informative family and company history that will survive generations.” For additional information about Ilana Segal Robicsek or The Art of Memory Press, call 847.220.6745 e-mail info@artofmemorypress.com or visit www.ArtOfMemoryPress.com.

rbanMeadows looks like any other flower shop at first glance – beautiful arrangements, fragrant lilies, ready-tograb bouquets by the door. High-quality arrangements are sent out each week to brighten corporate offices, celebrate anniversaries, or decorate large weddings and events. But UrbanMeadows is not simply a flower shop – it’s one of a growing number of social enterprises that exist across Chicagoland and beyond. Social enterprises use commercial strategies for social good, and every day, UrbanMeadows is accomplishing that goal. Founded by Thresholds, Illinois’ largest community mental health agency, UrbanMeadows was originally a place for Thresholds’ clients to gain valuable work experience while also enjoying the proven benefits of horticulture therapy. Employment is many times the single most effective treatment for mental illness, providing not only economic independence, but self-worth, direction and dignity. Today, UrbanMeadows provides the highest quality floral services to customers in Chicago and the suburbs, ranging from small bouquets to full event floral services. With a personal touch and wide range of services, UrbanMeadows offers customers the added benefit of having their dollars support Thresholds’ ground-breaking work for those with severe mental illness. Thresholds assists thousands of people each year who are living with a severe mental illness. From homeless outreach to supported housing, Thresholds’ wide range of community-based services allows clients to live independent, productive lives in their communities. “UrbanMeadows’ customers love that they’re helping a great cause, but they wouldn’t keep coming back if our
product was not excellent. We take pride in providing top-notch floral arrangements, and customers certainly enjoy the bonus of supporting a social enterprise,” says Mark Ishaug, CEO of Thresholds. “Choosing UrbanMeadows is an act of charity, but it’s much more than that – our goal is to always exceed the customer’s expectations with quality, value and professional service.” UrbanMeadows currently operates in a downtown space at 120 South LaSalle St. They will expand in January 2014, with a new storefront in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood at the new Fred & Pamela Buffet Place. Gentleman Farms ELAWA FARM
OF THE NORTH SHORE
W
BY SUE MASARACCHIA-ROBERTS
This makes it historically significant as an example of “farm group” architecture that includes four courtyards and a formal garden. On this property, the Armour home was to be designed by David Adler, who designed the two gatehouse wings and a garage, however, the home was never built. . A tunnel, meant to protect the family from weather, connects the two gatehouses, which were used as a single family residence. Elawa’s name is derived from combining the names of Elsa and A Watson Armour and – was, for a time, also referred to as LeWa Farm for Leilia and Wallace Carroll, who purchased the property in 1954. Wallace’s father, Barry Carroll, grew up on the property and Carroll family members remained on the property until its sale in 1998. Lake Forest purchased the buildings and garden area and, in 2002, the privately funded Elawa Farm Foundation was created. Wildlife Discovery Center (WDC) curator Rob Carmichael
hile many North Shore residents pass these historic family farms, most may not know of the history they hold – from a farm founded by the creator of Chicago’s “L” system, to appearances by cowboy film stars to truck farming experts speaking at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, these local farms hold a lot of history…
ELAWA FARM Between Lake Forest and Lake Bluff lie the remnants of a pastoral way of life. Elawa Farm is one of the few remaining well-preserved “gentlemen’s” farms around. Once part of an estate owned by meat packing magnate A. Watson Armour, it was considered his country home. It spanned 125 acres and was created for his pleasure. New York architect Alfred Hopkins, a leading ”estate farm” expert, designed the complex. The estate is laid out symmetrically, with all the necessary farming functions separated.

h, summer. Nothing like the crack of a bat, the sip of a cold beer and the sun shining down on a beautiful summer day. A cool night with the stars overhead, a handful of popcorn and your favorite movie about to start. Hosting a cookout for friends where the kids are entertained so that the adults can catch up and have some laughs.Where are these magical summer destinations? Surprise — your own backyard. Outdoor entertainment options have advanced greatly in recent years. Innovative companies have reengineered outdoor technology from the ground up to create true all-weather outdoor LCD TVs and speaker systems. Think you’ll have to locate the TV in a shaded area so that you can see the screen? Think again. Worried those speakers will play flat, toneless sound? Not a chance. Advanced new TVs deliver superior brightness and are optimized for outdoor viewing. They’re also optimized for outdoor installation. Weather-proof materials are used in every component of outdoor TVs in order to resist the harsh effects of rain, dirt, insects, extreme Chicago temperatures, and UV rays. Likewise, outdoor speaker systems are now made to withstand extreme weather while blending seamlessly into

your living environment. Music lovers can play their favorite tunes while gardening, grilling, swimming, dining al fresco or just playing in the yard without noticing their hidden speakers. I personally prefer the Sonance Landscape Series as they provide uncompromised performance and deliver the perfect sound quality without any hot spots or dead zones. They also offer advanced zone controls so that you can be free to play music without ever bothering the neighbors. Whether you’re watching TV or listening to music, outdoor technology adds an entirely new and enjoyable aspect to spending time outdoors. Really, there is nothing better than Summer…now you can just enjoy it a little bit more. David Welles is the owner and founder of Tunnel Vision Technology — a home and lifestyle technology company. fter 15 years on the PGA Tour, playing for the 2003 President’s Cup and wins at the Sony Open, Western Open and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, I can tell you first hand that a solid short game performance is the key for any competitive golfer and an absolute must for successful PGA Tour players. But I can also tell you that getting from the Tee to the Fairway to the Green isn’t always so easy. Missed shots and tricky situations will occur during a round of golf, which is why the PGA Tour composes the important statistic known as “scrambling”. Scrambling highlights the ability of a PGA professional to save par after missing a

green in regulation. The basis of scrambling success is solid fundamentals which allow a golfer to predictably control distance and successfully chip in order to get up and down. Players who develop the ability to scramble are highly successful at saving par and posting red numbers. Here are my tips to help
you manage your short game and improve your Scramble Percentage (lefties take the opposite approach.) 1. When chipping, use a slightly open stance, placing the majority of your weight on your left side. Keep the left wrist flat and the right wrist bent back with hands

slightly forward of the clubhead and set in the impact position, creating the important forwardleaning shaft at impact. These factors combine to create a descending blow and solid contact while chipping.
2. Keep knees slightly flexed and pointed in the same direction as your feet. The knees remain flexed throughout the stroke, keeping the club traveling in a steady arc. Swinging your arms may move your knees, but your knees should not move independently.
3. Keep your feet close together with toes pointing in front of the ball and the majority of your weight on your left foot. This helps quiet the lower body and places the weight forward, creating the descending stroke of a good chip.
5. Keep the hips slightly open to the target when you address the ball. Let your arms hang freely down from your shoulders and the open hip position allows you to extend your arms past impact, avoiding any breakdown at the wrists.
4. Relax in the shoulders, arms and hands. This allows you to relax throughout impact and concentrate on your target. Tension is one of the great detriments to a good chip shot.
6. Face the club directly in line with your flat left wrist. Both the wrist and clubface rotate away from the ball. They stay on plane and rotate back to impact and through the finish, like a door swinging open and closed.

ESTATE PLANNING MISCONCEPTIONS BY PUNEET CHAM, ESQ.
and
How They Impact Your Family
W
hen I speak to clients, friends and colleagues about estate planning, it is not unusual for me to encounter the same misconceptions over and over again. These common misconceptions tend to discourage people from developing an estate plan, which can result in unpleasant and unintended consequences. MISCONCEPTION # 1 I DON’T NEED AN ESTATE PLAN, MY SPOUSE WILL GET IT ALL: If you don’t take the time to prepare an estate plan, the State of Illinois kindly provides one for you. We call this the “No Plan” Estate Plan and it can result in great hardship for families. For example, if an individual is survived by a spouse and minor children, common sense dictates that the assets should go to the surviving spouse. However, the State of Illinois’ plan distributes ½ of the assets to the spouse and ½ of the assets to the minor children. The surviving spouse can then be left with insufficient assets to support himself/herself, despite having worked a lifetime to build them up. Proper planning can avoid this and other unintentional results. MISCONCEPTION # 2 ONLY THE WEALTHY NEED AN ESTATE PLAN: You don’t have to be Oprah or Steve Jobs to require an estate plan. While proper estate planning can provide significant tax savings for the wealthy, most estate plans address non-tax issues for people who own property, run a business, have children, or simply wish to ensure their assets go where intended at death. By creating a Will, Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Property and, in some cases, a Revocable Trust, parents can choose guardians for their minor children, appoint agents in the event of incapacity, protect an inheritance from creditors or divorce, avoid probate, implement business succession planning and address many other goals.
32
NORTH SHORE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2013
MISCONCEPTION # 3 I’VE COMPLETED MY ESTATE PLAN; I’M DONE! Congratulations! You’ve completed your estate plan. However, as your family’s circumstances and goals change, you may want to update your plan. Review your estate plan at least once every three years to ensure it remains consistent with your wishes, and notify your estate planning attorney of any significant personal, professional or financial changes that may affect your plan. Similarly, a good estate planning attorney will notify you of any changes in the law and be proactive in the maintenance of your plan. Just as all families are unique, so are their estate planning needs. To ensure that the needs and goals of you and your family are addressed appropriately, seek the advice of an attorney that specializes in estate planning. explained, “The farm features a beautiful garden, a market and a kitchen where produce grown from the garden is prepared for sale.” Located near the property is the Middlefork Savanna. Executive Director, Joanne Miller, explained, “[Its] the highest tall grass savanna in the U.S. [Our] award-winning nature center indoor/outdoor exhibit is home to [one] of the most spectacular collections of reptiles, birds of prey and other animals. It emphasizes global conservation. There’s really something for everyone to enjoy whether that’s gardening, shopping, cooking classes, hiking, biking, and in our case, enjoying the amazing animals.” She added, “We follow organic practices for our vegetables and sell them, along with our
Jensen was hired to design the grounds; however, Insull lost his fortune and his estate, along with his reputation, in 1932 and left the country. The long-vacant property was sold, in 1937, to John and Julia Cuneo. “This was the era of well-to-do businessmen who moved north and built big farms,” said John Byrne, the Cuneo operations manager and historian who worked for the Cuneo estate for 33 years. Byrne’s grandfather worked for Insull and his father worked for the Cuneos for 40 years. Local area farms were absorbed into the various gentlemen farm estates. “Armour began the trend, [securing] more than 4,000 acres. Cuneo, at his peak, owned a little over 2,000 acres.” Making his fortune as owner of the

flowers and kitchen-baked items, three days a week.” Current Lake Forest Preservation Foundation President Paul Bergmann said, “This is very much an operating farm. Our organic produce and [WDC] are among [many] components that make [Elawa] really special.” HAWTHORN MELLODY FARM Many area baby boomers remember childhood trips to Hawthorn Mellody Farm, but few know its roots. Like Elawa’s Armour, Samuel Insull was also a gentleman farmer. A former apprentice to Thomas Edison, Insull was instrumental in creating Commonwealth Edison, General Electric and local railroad lines, including Chicago’s “L” system. In 1914, he built a home designed by noted architect Benjamin Marshall, in what is now Vernon Hills. Renowned landscape architect Jens 36

very successful Cuneo Printing Press, Cuneo loved to live lavishly and never overlooked opportunities to make more money. “Even though he thought of farming as a hobby, he always did things right,” said Byrne. “He learned [everything] about farming.” As a result, he acquired “the best milking herd he could find and started selling the milk locally,” resulting in a fleet of trucks delivering milk and ice cream along the North Shore. Cuneo named it Hawthorn-Mellody, to acknowledge the merger of an Insull dairy and one that belonged to Armour. In 1949, Cuneo built a state-ofthe-art milking parlor with a viewing gallery that became so popular, “people parked up and down Milwaukee Avenue on Sundays to watch them milk,” said Byrne. Cuneo capitalized on its popularity as a destination and built a

children’s zoo and other attractions. A steam engine ride and ‘Hawthorn Gulch Frontier Town’ were opened in 1955; actor William Boyd (playing fictional cowboy hero Hopalong Cassidy) participated in opening day. The park offered entertainment like pony and Conestoga wagon rides and Wild West shows. Celebrities like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and Nat King Cole appeared in ads. The farm became such a popular tourist attraction, it drew more than 400,000 visitors each summer. Cuneo sold the dairy in 1968 and closed the park in 1970. He developed Hawthorn Mall, among other like properties. By Cuneo’s death in 1977, only 175 acres remained in his trust. The remaining estate exists today as a museum gifted to Loyola University
Chicago. However, for those who had the chance to visit, the farm lives on as a pleasant memory. WAGNER FARM Long before the gentleman farmers began migrating north, German families immigrated to the North Shore. In the 1850s, Johann Wagner’s family was among them. By 1898, Wagner owned approximately 91 acres along what are now Lake and Wagner Road. In 1902, his youngest son, Thomas, bought a 40acre dairy and truck farm now known as Wagner Farm. Thomas Wagner served as Northfield Township Road Commissioner and owned a gravel business, which he passed on to his sons. Of the five Wagner children, three remained on the farm their entire lives. In the 1980s, the local Citizens Organized for the Wagners (COWS)
WAGNER FARM
campaigned nationally to save the farm. When Thomas’ youngest child died in 1997, her will specified the farm should be sold and its proceeds placed in trust for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview. The church, which her parents helped found, sold the farm’s remaining 18 acres to the park district. All the buildings from the Wagner farm remain intact today. This farm tells their story. “This is one of the only museums in the U.S. that talks about truck farming,” said Todd Price, the farm’s director. “This is all about where food comes from – interpretively and educationally. This is our mission. We like to involve people, [so] groups like the 4H are a perfect fit.” Having a history, education and public service background, 11 years ago Price created the Clovers, a local 4H group. “4H members become farmers as well as consumers. They learn to work, to get dirty, to keep records, to forecast and to deal with markets. It’s great for kids to take ownership and learn these lessons. This emulates a real farm in every way.” He added, “The animals are well taken care of.”
The farm serves the community. People can take classes or attend an event – like the “historic dinners” program in the winter, or participate in a community garden. It also offers a “ground breaking program” with the North Suburban Special Education Department (NSSED), which has its own garden and alternative onsite school. “A museum division in a park district is unusual,” said Price, “but Glenview feels it is worthwhile.” His program is so unique, the farm team was asked to speak about truck farming at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, two years ago. “The farm has a lot of great little stories,” Price added. “Our mission is to let people know and appreciate where food comes from and better understand our history and heritage. We think it is important.” Sue Masaracchia-Roberts is a freelance writer and public relations consultant specializing in health care, profiles and small businesses, Sue has been published in a variety of local and national newspapers and magazines. The New Age In
Exterior Wall Coating B reakthrough ceramic coating system lowers energy costs and provides long-lasting protection for your home.
H
omeowners are breaking the endless cycle of painting and repainting their homes with a significantly advanced option. Ceramic exterior coating is a revolutionary product that combines the natural appearance of a freshly painted surface with the permanence and durability associated with vinyl or aluminum siding. Ceramic coating looks like fresh rich paint, and is available in virtually any color. It can be applied over wood, brick, stucco, Masonite, concrete blocks and more. This coating forms a thick, protective shield that will never chip, crack or peel. Not only does it waterproof, soundproof and insulate a home, but you will never need to paint your exterior again. These unique exteriors also provide energy saving and environmental benefits. While solar radiation significantly raises a wall’s surface temperature, ceramic coatings reflect solar rays away, lowering surface temperatures by more than 30 degrees and reducing energy consumption by helping keep the home cool. Furthermore, some ceramic coating brands also protect against mold, mildew and fungus. For instance, Rhino Shield, the market leader in the ceramic wall coating industry uses a proprietary EPA-registered three-part-additive to
protect against these plant pathogens from growing on your home and prematurely aging its exterior. This new-age, break-through product also contains ceramic microspheres that replace the inexpensive filler products found in conventional paints. These microspheres provide an insulating barrier for walls to protect against heat, UV rays and material breakdown. To apply their ceramic coating, Rhino Shield uses a three-step process as seen on the home improvement show “This Old House” and HGTV’s “Curb Appeal.” First, they power wash and scrape the home’s surface to remove all the dirt, grime, mold and mildew from the exterior, filling in any cracks with an

elastomeric caulk. Next, they apply an adhesive primer sealer that permeates the substrate and completely waterproofs the surface. This also acts as a bonding agent for the durable ceramic finish coat, which is applied in the final stage to all exterior surfaces. When the application process is complete, the home is protected from the elements and will never have to be painted again. raining your dog to come reliably is a valuable behavior for any owner. Using a clicker and some small treats, you can teach your dog a reliable recall in the safety of your own home before you’re ever in a situation where you really need to use it.
STEP 1 — Find a quiet area. Get close to your dog and offer her your hand. When her nose touches your hand, click and treat. Deliver the treat with one hand and touch her collar with the other. Practice frequently, but add distractions over time to make the exercise a bit more challenging. STEP 2 — Add distance between the two of you. Offer your hand, click and treat as you did before, but now toss the treat behind her. Wait until she’s done chewing and makes eye contact. Once she does, present your hand and click before she reaches you, then treat and touch her collar after she’s all the way in. Keep adding distance until your dog

comes to you with certainty. If not, reduce the distance or get some more practice on Step 1. STEP 3 — Name the behavior. Repeat Step 2, but now as the dog comes toward you, say the word “come”. Click when she arrives and your hand is on her collar. Once your dog responds to “come” by running toward you without your hand out, stop using your hand and rely solely on the verbal cue. Keep practicing and try the recall while she’s playing with a toy or locked on to a scent. If she chooses the recall over enticing distractions, you both get a treat for a job well done! KneePain How to Get Rid of
BY DR. KIM MARTIN, D.C., F.A.S.A., B.C.I.M
Once and for All W
L
et’s face it, your knees aren’t as young as they used to be, and playing with the kids or grandkids isn’t any easier either. Maybe your knee pain keeps you from walking short distances or playing golf like you used to. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but feeling held back physically. FINALLY, AN OPTION OTHER THAN DRUGS OR SURGERY The Cold Laser is an outpatient, non-surgical procedure, often used in physical therapy and sports medicine to accelerate the healing process. It offers non-invasive treatment to promote healing for those who suffer from pain in muscles, nerves, and joints, like that associated with chronic knee pain. This same laser is used by sports teams including the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Bengals. This pain-free approach works by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes, providing pain relief and reducing damage that can be caused by injury.

PROMOTES RAPID HEALING OF THE INJURED TISSUES The FDA cleared the first Cold Laser in 2002. This was after their study found a 76% improvement in patients with pain. In fact, patients we treat with the Cold Laser often show a higher level of function, both during and after the treatment period. This innovative new technology has an impressive success rate of returning patients to work, sports and competitive activities, as well as everyday life. FINDING AN ANSWER TO YOUR KNEE PAIN Patients suffering from knee issues can’t start a successful treatment plan without having a proper evaluation first. A proper “Knee Pain Evaluation” should be an in-depth consultation with someone who will listen, really listen, to the details of your case and not only provide a complete neuromuscular examination but a thorough analysis of your exam findings as well. Then, and only then, can you map out your plan to being pain free. Remember what it was like before you had knee problems; when you were pain free and could enjoy everything life had to offer? It can be that way again. Don’t neglect your problem any longer – don’t wait until it’s too late. Dr. Kim Martin BS, D.C, F.A.S.A., B.C.I.M. is board certified in integrative medicine, a member of American Functional Neurology Institute and owner of North Shore Health Solutions in Northbrook. To schedule a knee pain evaluation or to ask Dr. Martin a question, contact her at: 847.715.9060 or visit: www. NorthShoreHealthSolutions.com

From Old World Craftsman to Fine Antiques Repair
Modern Day Techniques
F
ilip Marona is an old world European craftsman. He’s an antique furniture repair and restoration expert whose journey started nearly 20 years ago with the famous Robert Benveniste and has taken him from his native Poland, to France, to his current workshop in the historic Carson Pierre Scott warehouse building located on the South Branch of the Chicago River. In 1994 Marona began working as an apprentice under Robert Benveniste. Benveniste made a name for himself in both art and science; devoting the first half of his professional life to biochemistry and the second half to his love of French antiques. It was in Benveniste’s workshop that a young Marona was given the chance to learn the fine art of furniture restoration from several older, master craftsmen. Marona blossomed in his craft and after years of proving himself, was asked to supervise the workshop. He took a greater role in developing the restoration business
and

while also taking frequent trips to purchase and sell fine antiques. After Robert Benveniste’s unexpected death in 2001, Marona purchased the business from his mentor’s estate with the support of the Benveniste family. Since arriving in Chicago, Marona has established a thriving business taking repair and restoration projects of all sizes from private homes, museums, insurance claims, architects and designers, while also finding the time to regularly exhibit in a number of Chicago, North Shore and national antique shows. Additionally, he spends one week each year at the vaunted Winterthur Museum in Delaware to learn and practice advanced conservation techniques. Filip Marona is the owner of Ile de France Restoration Guild. To discuss a repair or restoration project, visit www.MaronaAntiques.com or contact Filip at 773.727.1699 or MaronaFilip@ comcast.net.
