LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER PIT BULL! The very name evokes a myriad of emotions-fear, loathing and mistrust are but a few the general public harbors. Despite the best efforts of Cesar Milan (the Dog Whisperer), the pejorative tags that these dogs carry are hard to overcome. Here in lies the mission that inspires Heaven Sent Pit Bull Rescue (HSPBR), to turn around the emotional backlash by emphasizing how these much maligned dogs can be sweet, gentle and loyal to their owners when given the opportunity. We also tell the specific story of a rescued Pit Bull named Pluto who has become a hero service dog to the community. It is not an easy task to sway the hearts and minds of many who have formed opinions without knowing these animals firsthand. The volunteers of this rescue group are committed to inform the public that the onus of negativity lies on the shoulders of bad owners and not the breed of dog. We wish them well in their endeavor. Also, in this issue we offer gift giving choices from local pet businesses to give to your furry Valentine’s this February. Love and kisses to all.

a review of
H
e was a rough-looking thing. Big ears, wiry hair. His muzzle just beginning to grizzle. He looked like the sort who’d been living outside of society for a while, maybe never really been a companion.
So begins One Good Dog, Susan Wilson’s fictional account of two battle-scarred, down-on-their-luck top dogs turned underdogs, survivors with “ferocious reputations.” Both powerful and feared, each “made not born that way.” Interestingly, the italicized introductory description above is that of the novel’s human protagonist, Adam March – as he is first seen by Chance, the dog he will come to rescue from the animal shelter’s “end cage.” Confused? Don’t be – and – don’t make the mistake of dismissing this engagingly different read without at least turning a few pages! Though
8
chapters that alternate between a person’s and a Pit-Bull’s point of view might seem a bit far-fetched at first (it did to me!) – it works! – and surprisingly well. As a matter of fact – well, okay, opinion – if Wilson’s goal in putting words in a dog’s mouth is to make her readers re-think the often considered “bully breeds,” she overachieves it! In short, it is the riches-to-rags story of a self-made and self-destroyed, once-upon-a-time threehome-owning, Armani-and-HugoBoss suit wearing CEO and very unlikeable man who loses his job, social status, family, and friends after “losing it” at work one day. But, when a resultant court-ordered community service stint at a homeless shelter brings about a “dressing down” into a gravy-stained food server’s apron, and puts March in touch and on par with a people that before would have been “someone to dodge as he goes down the street much like a stray,” both he and his life begin to change. Ironically - it is one of those very strays - a “rusty brindle with white markings and a weird hacked-off ear” - that has escaped kicks, break sticks and confinement in an innercity cellar’s wire cage that first sees in him (again, in the Staffie’s POV) “that underneath the rough exterior lay a heart like mine, not entirely hard” - and understands that “you’ve got to be tough to live in this world, whether your lip is curled in real anger or fear aggression.”
As the surfacing of memories leads readers back in time and down dark alleyways, they will discover how it is that both have come to be how and where they are today – one, a “voluntary surrender” by a widowed father who gave him up as a child to the state – the other, trained to be a prize-winning fighter or be dumped to die after used as bait; both victims of neglect and abuse – each learned to survive in his own way. When the two cross paths and an unleashed Chance unknowingly passes the ultimate test by choosing to stay, March begins to shed the protective armor he’d spent a lifetime welding around a heart he vowed would never risk loving or being hurt again. But, it is not until near The End, when asked to “make the right choice,” that readers will witness the extent to which the Tin Man’s heart has been set free and his humanity regained. You’ll be hard-pressed to decide just “who rescued whom?” in this tail-wagging good read! Toni Draper, a transplant from Maryland, graduated from Hood College with a degree in Spanish Language and Literature. She currently shares her “reading abode” with her partner and their six rescued dogs and a sassy Siamese cat in Helotes.

I T ’ S F E B R U A R Y:
BY DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF VETERINARIAN, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY
love is in the air W
ith Valentines all around us. it is easy to look with puppy-eyes at our four-legged companions and wonder if they really love us back. For those who have pets, the giant lovefilled gazes are easy to read. But just what do their gestures of love really mean and which ones should we discourage? Everybody knows that a big sloppy kiss from your pooch says “I Love You” when translated into English, but what does it mean in canine? Well, luckily this one is an easy translation. Dogs do show affection by mutual grooming. Though not as big a groomer and primper as a feline, dogs will clean themselves 10
and their close pack mates. A submissive dog will approach the pack alpha and lick them under their chin. If the alpha returns the gesture by licks the cheek or top of the nose, the affection is returned. Puppies will lick the faces and chins of adults as they return from a hunt to say, “Welcome back! Where’s dinner?” While not in the same scenarios, dogs in our human packs will translate licking into this same ritual, attempting to lick your cheeks and chins to show that they love and respect you. A few pets across the head and muzzle show you reciprocate. See? And you didn’t think you spoke dog! Cat people know that a solid head bump from their favorite feline means “I love you” when translated
&
d gs cats Texas
to English. But what does it mean in “Catese”? In reality, cats are claiming you with a gesture that firmly says, “You are mine.” Perhaps this renders to the same thing as a cat would not want to own something they did not love. Cats have scent glands around their heads. Bumping and rubbing these scent glands onto items around the house, including the people in it, leaves their scent behind and firmly establishes their claim for any other feline that happens to sniff that object. So if you have been bumped, remember you wear ode de Fluffy and a big flag saying, “I belong to Fluffy.” Ok, so we unveiled the two main communicating gestures of dogs and cats, what other gestures have we interpreted correctly or incorrectly as love? And, more importantly, should we let it continue? • Sharing space. Dogs and cats alike are prone to the behavior of space sharing. They sleep with us, they sleep on us. They snuggle as close as they can on the couch. They climb our legs or jump up to give us hugs. We, as humans, accept space sharing as a sign of affection. While it is true, that mutual peers in dog packs share space, the challenge is “peer”. Yes, the fact that they want to be close to us is in large part because they love us, but the hard part is that sometimes this can be an issue if you are already having problems with “pack status”. Ask yourself the following questions and be honest with your answers: • Does my dog call the shots? • Are there times when my dog bites or growls at me? • Are there moments when I am scared of my dog? • Does my dog routinely obey the commands I give him/her? If you answered any of the first three questions with “yes”, or the last one with “no”, you could have an issue with “pack standing” which means your dog knows they hold the dominant place in the pack. Space sharing at that point can contribute to the problem and should be avoided until you reestablish your place as alpha. • Playing and play nips. Both dogs and cats have a tendency to play with their owners, especially in {February 2014}
their youth. This play can range from tag to wrestling and can even involve teeth. When the dog or cat is young, it can lead to lack of bite inhibition in dogs and cats. Discouraging all dogs and cats from placing their teeth or claws onto your body is a sure way to keep bad habits from starting. A unique gesture of dogs is to play bow. A dog will drop to its elbows with its bum in the air and then dart off in a tight circle. This IS a valid invitation to come play and you should take advantage of the bonding experience. • Grinning. There is some legitimate confusion with a facial expression in mainly dogs that involves showing teeth. Most people see a dog showing teeth and immediately assume that it is snarling or showing aggression. Just as we are attempting to learn dog language here, dogs will sometimes imitate or respond to human gestures as well. Submissive grinning or “smiling” is far from aggressive and actually attempts to display an “aim to please” personality. But how can you tell the difference? Grinning dogs will most commonly avoid eye contact, be wagging frantically, and have their body curved towards you as a “please pet me” request. A snarling dog will conversely be very still, have a raised scruff, be trying to step away from you and may be demanding eye contact in a very assertive way. Often they will also have snarling noises and rumbling growls with their teeth. In short, do our pets love us? Those of us who love them know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s true. Should we remain watchful of the behaviors that can leave to behavioral issues? Absolutely! Enjoy the boundless adoration that only a pet can give, and remember, “I love you” transcends language barriers.

Heaven Sent Pit Bull Rescue
BY JENNIFER CINTRON
A
t Heaven Sent Pit Bull Rescue, we are approaching dog rescue from a new angle! Our goal is not just the individual Pit Bull, but for every dog in the future not to be labeled by their breed but by their deeds! Heaven Sent Pit Bull Rescue (HSPBR), not only rescues Pit Bulls from death row, but we heal them from their pasts and help them to become heroes in their communities. Our Pit Bulls come from high kill shelters and once we get to know the individual dog, it is placed into one of our training programs. We offer service dogs, search and rescue dogs, and basic obedience training, provided by trainers who volunteer their time, like Morgan Gale. HSPBR service dogs can be seen through out the community at places like the supermarkets and even restaurants, helping their owners to live their lives independently. Our search and rescue dogs are used to find lost children and elderly people, and even act as the life guards on duty at some resorts. They are real heroes and they are happy to help! Our trainer’s also rally once a month to provide a free training class to Pit Bulls and their owners in San Antonio TX and surrounding cities. Training Pit Bull owners is an integral part of changing the breed’s image for the better! Another program HSPBR is involved in is, “Walk Among Angels.” We are always collecting pet supplies and people supplies to donate to families in need. When enough supplies have been gathered, we deliver the donations straight to the families who need them. If you have anything you would like to donate to this program, message HSPBR’s facebook page for more Currently, Sherise Davila (founder of HSPBR) and her family are donating their home and land to become HSPBR’s grand facility. Upon it’s completion, it will be equipped with a vetting area, grooming shop, training yard with agility course and dog pool, and the home
will serve as a working environment for service dogs in training! The facility is needed to more productively train our Pit Bulls, allow for more to be rescued, and provide a place for volunteers and potential adopters to gather. Many people do not realize what a rescued Pit Bull is capable of, and by showcasing them in their communities, we have had great success in helping to educate the public. We also go to the same senior center on a monthly basis, and it is one of our favorite places to take our dogs. It is amazing that some of the residents who cannot even remember their own names, always remember our dogs. Currently, we are working on creating a reality show, that will follow us and our fabulous canines through our journey at HSPBR. Our hope is to reach a larger audience and use this show to help curb the negativity involved in animal rescue and highlight the positive! San Antonio, Texas is lucky to have such a hard working group of people in our city that are willing to come together in working towards a better world for rescued Pit Bulls! We couldn’t be where we are today if not for the amazing volunteers this city provides us with. HSPBR hopes that we inspire other rescue organizations and pet parents to train for life, and to inspire the world to see the dog and not the breed! For more information about us, and on how to get involved, visit Heaven Sent Pit Bull Rescue at our facebook page!

About Our Cover Models-Buttercup & Jax
Buttercup & Jax are siblings and the best of friends. Buttercup is a rescue from Heaven Sent Pit Bull Rescue (HSPBR). Jax was rescued by his family from the Humane Society. Buttercup’s interests include rolling in the sand (more of the sea weed), performing tricks for treats, snuggling, chasing butterflies, going on walks, wrestling with her daddy, looking out the window, playing fetch (well she will get the ball and bring it back but her owners will have to fight her for it), tug of war, taste testing meals, investigating outside, chasing her human brothers around, good ole belly rubs (this puts her in a trance) and LOVES playing with her feline brother Jax!!!
anotherwonderful HSPBRstory a hero named Pluto, told by Pluto I will never forget, the day I met the Angels of Heaven Sent Pit Bull Rescue, or the love they showed me. My name is Pluto, and on the day of my rescue, I thought it was the end for me. Then there was a light, it was my destiny calling. She picked me up and placed me in the car. That was the beginning of my epic journey. I never even imagined I could be the hero I am today. Who would have believed that a scared, hopeless, and forgotten spirit, could now proudly wear a vest with badges of honor? HSPBR Trainers believed I could. They knew I had a bigger purpose in life. They taught me how to detect my mommy’s seizures, and get her to a safe place, so she doesn’t further injure herself. With me by my mom’s side, she is now free to enjoy her life without the fear of undetected seizures. I bark and paw at her on her right side to let her know when a seizure is coming. We now spend everyday loving, educating,
{February 2014}
training, and rescuing together. We go to schools to teach kids that anything is possible. They learn from my stories and love my kisses. I meet new friends everyday. Some are in shelters and some are without homes. I show them compassion and walk with them on their journey to become the next hero. My favorite place to visit is the assisted living center. With my vest on like a superhero, I bring smiles and comfort to everyone I meet. I am also the mascot for Texas Fuel with the American basketball association. I love and kiss all of our supporters at games and when they see me around town. It’s my belief that every forgotten spirit like me can become a hero if given a chance. So next time u see a stray or visit a shelter, know that you have the power to change lives. Not just of the animal you rescue, but your own life and everyone around you.

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC Q: With all the questions about the safety of vaccines, why is it recommended for animals to have a variety of yearly vaccines. Wouldn’t it be safer to check blood titers to see if additional vaccines are necessary rather than just vaccinating when adequate protection may already exist? Also, what is the difference in strength or dosage between a one year and three year rabies vaccine? Thank You—Ed

A: Vaccines are very important for the health of our pets, especially the first few years. I cannot speak for all veterinarians but I believe that after the first 2 to 3 years these animals need to be re-evaluated. We must treat each pet individually, as to how they live, specific breed and their diet, etc. I spread vaccines out depending on
what these pets are exposed to. In other words, I select vaccines for each individual pet. There are core vaccines that are recommended by the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association). As to the question about titers, these are okay, we have done them in the past but they do not always imply protection even if present in adequate amount. The one and three year rabies vaccine is basically the same vaccine but the requirements vary from state to state as to how it is given. Texas requires the three year vaccine. Personally, I vaccinate my dog yearly because he is exposed to wildlife. If dogs or cats are sensitive to vaccines and have a reaction your veterinarian will make the decision for what is best.

Veterinarian Case Histories the incomparable Mr. Hyde BY DR. BALL OF BRACKEN EQUINE CLINIC
I
have been very fortunate in my life to have been afforded opportunities that allowed me to pursue both my personal and professional interests. The decision to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, specifically as an equine veterinarian, has been one of the most personally rewarding and fulfilling experiences in my life.
My favorite animal has always been the horse. I grew up riding horses and competing in high school rodeo. Even though I had dogs and cats as pets as a child I was always enamored with the horse. But it was my experience with one particular cat that made me just a little envious of the feline nine life concept. A number of years ago a colleague and good friend of mine had sold his equine practice and needed to find a home for his barn cat, Mr. Hyde. He came by his name due to his aloofness and independent nature. I agreed to take him on as we were in need of a barn cat for rodent control around the clinic. I went through the prescribed quarantine of keeping him in a cage inside the barn, with ample food and water, for 10 days. Upon his release Mr. Hyde was not seen again by anyone around the clinic for weeks. Then one evening during a rainstorm I caught a glimpse of him running across the front porch of the clinic. I offered him entrance into the front door, which he readily accepted, and for the next 10 years he remained a loyal pet. However, one Saturday morning we had scheduled a number of clients at the clinic, all of whom were from out of town. Mr. Hyde had a bad habit of personally inspecting the vehicles, without invitation, when they arrived. No one remembered seeing him again
16
a local restaurant before going home. Due to the power outage and flooding conditions the restaurant had closed so I decided to go on home, which was another 10 miles or so away. I parked the truck in the garage, went to bed and the next morning I was completely surprised to see Mr. Hyde calmly laying on top of the hood of my truck. He had a disheveled appearance but not a mark on him. He apparently had gotten under the hood during the storm and then rode approximately 20 miles safely to the house. I was in disbelief, thankful that he had not been injured but unsure how many lives that he had left. Fortunately, he lived many more years safely at the clinic until he died from the infirmities of old age. He was the kindest, coolest barn cat ever!
after that Saturday. So the following week we contacted those clients hoping they had seen him but to no avail. Weeks turned into months and no Mr. Hyde. Then one hot summer afternoon he appeared at the clinic out of nowhere. He was terribly malnourished and weak but he had made it back. He was treated like the Dr. Ball has been in practice prodigal son and for over 25 years. Q: Is there hope for older dogs who refuse to be housebroken? —Mindy Lou A: First I would rule out anything medical, such as incontinence or kidney issues. Then, even though old habits die hard, I think there is hope. I would try going back to basics. Remove access to water before bed time. Be sure you see them empty their bladder when out, not just mark a bush or run up and down the fence line. You also need to remove any old markings in the house. It’s not likely that they’ll choose to go outside if they can still see and smell where they marked inside. Scolding them after the fact doesn’t help. If you can catch them in the act, you can give a correction, followed up by a lot of praise when you usher them outside to finish their business.
Q: We have a 7 year old male maltipoo named Gizmo who has an obsession with TV. He barks at so many things on TV….He can be in another room, hear a commercial he hates, come running into the room and bark n bark until it ends or we change the channel. Please help us.—Virginia Ramsey A: Redirect and Desensitize. Tivo a show/commercial he doesn’t like, turn the volume way down. Call Gizmo in and have something extremely valuable such as steak or a favorite squeaky toy. As you are playing with/feeding him, turn up the volume slightly. If he goes to bark, lightly restrain him by leash. Say nothing. When he looks back at you praise and reward with the higher valued item. This takes time and repetition but redirecting a bad behavior to a good behavior is one of the best ways to desensitize your pet.

Our dogs are our best friends! They live in our homes, watch our television shows, share our favorite foods and are always there for us. Dogs spend most of their life living in our world. Starting from puppyhood we teach them how to adjust to our lifestyle; everything from our style of communication, our play habits and social structures.
Our pups get so good at being our “fur babies” that we forget they want to be dogs! Spending time with their own species is a vital part in the lives of every happy and balanced dog. It enriches many areas of your dog’s well-being. Positive canine play is a joy to watch and encourages physical activity. Normal play involves chasing, playbowing, jumping, wrestling and affection. Many things that your pet may not do during his normal walk or game of fetch. This variety in exercise helps keep pets at a healthy weight and helps diminish extra energy. Playing with other dogs provides mental stimulation that your pet may be missing out on. Sure, play is fun but it also serves a purpose! Spending time in play groups will help your pup learn his own set of canine social skills and in return he will teach others what he has learned! Together they learn how to communicate, be respectful and have a good time. This new knowledge will boost your pal’s confidence and help him to be a happy and balanced companion. Okay, great! So, how do you get started? Enrolling your pup in Play Care is a great option for this type of socialization. There are many places here in San Antonio that offer Play Care or Doggy Day Care. The concept is generally the same- your friend is placed in a group with other social dogs and gets to play while you are away! I consider this a double win as my dog not only gets valuable enrichment but also doesn’t have to be home alone all day while I am at work. As an added bonus he comes home happy, tired and 20
better behaved! If your pup is social and rearing to go, visit a few different facilities and choose one where you are most comfortable. You may use these questions as a guideline to gain insight on the level of care provided: • Is it okay if I stop in to check on him? • Can I send his favorite treats? • How many dogs are in a group? • I want my dog to be safe, is everyone spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations? • Is there a Veterinarian on site incase my dog is injured during play? • Are there scheduled activities? You will likely see the benefits of this highly social and active environment immediately. Chances are your pal will be calmer, happier and may avoid boredom vices that were a problem in the past. The most important thing is that your Michelle Popilek, dog looks Client Relations for City forward to Veterinary Hospital, going and Friendship Pet Hospital that you feel and Wellness Center, and good about Genesis Breed-Specific taking him! portosystemicshunt
W
in small breed dogs
ith the popularity of small and toy dog breeds today, it comes as no surprise that many people will gravitate towards the smallest puppy in the litter. While these pint-sized animals are undeniably adorable, their small stature could be a symptom of a relatively common, but not very well-known problem – a PortoSystemic Shunt, or PSS.
A portosystemic shunt is a condition where the major blood vessel (portal vein) that supplies blood to the liver has an abnormal branch where some of the blood is diverted directly back to the general circulation without passing through the liver. A PSS is generally considered a congenital issue as it is a normal structure in utero but should close shortly after birth. Small dog breeds such as Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, and Chihuahuas tend to have a higher instance of PSS, although it can be seen in any breed or size of dog or cat. In a normal animal, blood passes out of the abdominal organs through the portal vein and into the liver, where it is filtered and metabolized before returning to the general circulation. In a patient with a shunt, a portion of this blood bypasses the liver and returns to circulation without being filtered. This allows toxins to accumulate in the blood and lead to several clinical symptoms of a PSS including vomiting, diarrhea, inappetance, troubling urinating and, most concerning, neurological problems. Signs such as weakness, headpressing, blindness and even seizures can be caused by a PSS. These symptoms are often more pronounced after eating due to the higher levels of toxins in the blood after a meal. Patients with suspected PSS generally need a thorough diagnostic work-up prior to surgery. Bloodwork, including a bile acid or ammonia test, is usually indicated; an abnormal result often indicates the presence of a shunt. An ultrasound is also often recommended and will sometimes reveal the presence of a shunt. While medical management can be used to treat an animal with a PSS, surgical intervention will provide the best prognosis for the patient. Ideally, patients
with a PSS would be treated medically for 2 weeks prior to surgery with a low-protein diet, lactulose and antibiotics. In addition, short-term anti-seizure medication is often prescribed to prevent complications after surgery. With surgical intervention, the surgeon explores the liver for the shunt and places an ameroid ring around the abnormal vessel. This ring slowly swells and closes off the shunt gradually; complete closure can take up to 2 months after surgery. The surgeon will also biopsy the liver to establish the long-term prognosis for the patient. Most patients with a portosystemic shunt do very well after surgery. If you suspect that your dog or cat has a shunt or would like to learn more about this common problem, check with your family veterinarian, and consider a consultation with a board-certified surgeon. Dr. Witsberger is board-certified in small animal surgery. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine with a DVM in 2006. After graduation, Dr. Witsberger completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Missouri. He then completed his three-year small animal surgical residency at Texas A&M University in 2010. Dr. Witsberger stayed on at Texas A&M as a small animal surgery faculty member where he taught and performed orthopedic, soft tissue and neurologic surgery. He moved to San Antonio in 2012 to open Mission Veterinary Specialists.

T
he Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates that one in five Americans suffers from all types of allergies, and of these between 15 and 30 percent have allergic reactions to cats and dogs. With so many people affected by allergies, it has become a growing trend to market pets as hypo-allergenic or suitable for people with allergies.
Dr. Mark Stickney, Director of General Surgery Services at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, discusses the causes of these allergies and how to keep them at bay while enjoying the companionship of a cherished pet. “While there are dogs and cats that are marketed as hypoallergenic, there is really no such thing,” notes Stickney. “People can be allergic to anything and it varies by person.” The most common causes of pet allergies from dogs are flaking skin, called dander, and seasonal allergies can 24
be caused by pollen spores that have attached to a dogs fur and brought into a house. The kinds of dogs that are probably less likely to cause allergies are those with short hair and those that are lesslikely to shed. These include terriers such as Yorkies and Westies, Poodles, and Schnauzers. “There are really no breeds of cats that are better for people with cat allergies because these allergies are usually caused by the cat’s saliva,” states Stickney. “When a cat grooms itself, the saliva dries on its fur and is then transferred to the pet owner.”

“Bathing your pet once a week and vacuuming your house often are two precautions you can take to cut down on the allergens attached to your pets and floating around your house”
There are some breeds of pets, such as the Chinese Crested dog and Sphinx cat, that are mostly or completely hairless. These pets may be less likely to cause allergies as the fur will not hold onto allergens. “While hairless pets may be an option for people with allergies, these types of animals come with their own problems,” warns Stickney. “Hairless dogs have to be washed very often as they tend to have very oily skin and other skin problems.” There also alternative pet options for people with allergies if they are willing to be a little adventurous. Reptiles, birds, rats, guinea pigs and fish are among the possibilities. “It may take some experimentation to find the right pet as different people are allergic to different kinds of animals, but reptiles and fish should be safe for just about any-
{February 2014}
body,” says Stickney. However, if one has their heart set on owning a dog or cat there are a few steps that they can take to alleviate some of the allergy risks. “Bathing your pet once a week and vacuuming your house often are two precautions you can take to cut down on the allergens attached to your pets and floating around your house,” notes Stickney. “If possible, grooming should be left to someone who is not allergic as to minimize your contact with the pet’s fur and dander.” Owning a pet is a fulfilling experience and something that many of us could not bear to live without. While allergies may dictate the breed or type of animal one can live with, everyone should be able to find a pet that they can love and that doesn’t make them sneeze. 25
man’sbestfriend BY TOMMY RICHARDS

ou’ve heard it said that a dog is man’s best friend and, if, a man can be judged by his friends, then I’m a lucky guy. If you’ve ever stopped by Jennings Anderson Ford in Boerne and had the pleasure of meeting Gus and Boone, you know what I mean.
I’m Scott Wilson, principal dealer at Jennings Anderson Ford, Gus and Boone are my yellow labs that spend each day hanging out at the dealership. Gus and Boone love coming to the dealership and visiting with everyone. Kids are their favorite. They look forward to the school field trips that occasionally stop by. I started bringing them here when they were pretty small and just liked having them around. Having the dogs here really help keep things from getting too stressful. Gus and Boone seem to know just the right time to come over and put their head on my lap. It keeps the atmosphere a little lighter when they’re around. They have their routine each day. They make the rounds to pretty much every department from sales to service. They also know who keeps treats in their desk and they make sure to visit them several times a day. They have even starred in several of our television commercials and other marketing materials. One of our most memorable advertisements is an outdoor board that had the two dogs in the cab of a F150 Super Crew that read “Lab Tested”. So as you can see Gus and Boone are a big part of the dealership, almost as big a part as they are of our family. They do their best to make every customer they happen to meet feel like a part of the Jennings Anderson Ford family. And that is a family tradition around here. Jennings Anderson Ford for over 34 years. People often tell me how lucky the dogs are that they JENNINGS ANDERSON FORD-31480 IH-10 WEST, BOERNE, TX

are able to spend the day at the dealership, in reality it is everyone else that are the lucky ones. Gus and Boone are two of the most loyal, friendly dogs a man could ask for. I am sure most people feel that way about their dogs and that’s the way it should be. And that’s what I mean when I say man’s best friends. So if you have a chance, stop by the dealership and say hello to Gus and Boone.

{petsafety} BY DR. JAMES PETERSON
is grain free food right for your pet?
A
s a society, we have become very concerned about our diet and a number of health issues related to our consumption of various foods. Gluten sensitivity in people is just one example and it has lead to many looking at “whole food” diets or even eating only foods that our Paleolithic ancestors consumed. Naturally, pet owners will translate these concerns to their cats and dogs and look for more natural diets for their four legged friends. Pet food marketers have been quick to respond to the public’s desire for grain free options in their lines of food. Catchy brand names like “Taste of the Wild”, “Natural Balance” or “Earthborn” tempt the human shoppers. But, are these pet owners choosing a diet simply based on marketing hype and the sales pitch in the store? Many believe that the gluten sensitivities common in people are also a widespread problem in pets and choose a diet based on a lack of specific ingredients, such as wheat. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that these particular problems occur regularly in dogs or cats. Gluten-sensitive intolerances are documented in Irish Setters, but, to date, we simply don’t know if other breeds are affected and the problem has not proven to be widespread. 28
Another frequent reason for choosing a grain free pet food is that the owner believes that wheat, corn or some other grain is highly allergenic and causes food allergies for their pets. The fallacy here is that many dogs are actually allergic to the proteins in the food. In a review of 267 cases, wheat actually was responsible for fewer canine allergy cases than beef and dairy and corn comes in at a distant 8th, behind chicken, egg and lamb. Finally, a common myth is that our pets are unable to effectively digest the grains present in commercial diets. The reality is that dogs do quite well digesting grains and starches. Not only has decades of research proven this, but new genetic information shows our domesticated canine friends have many more copies of a gene for amylase than their wolf cousins. This important enzyme helps cut starch molecules and enables dogs to effectively use grains as an energy source. If grain free is an option that interests you for your pet’s diet, talk with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can help you sort through the myths and misconceptions that so often abound when it comes to pet foods. This is especially important when it comes to food allergies. Over the counter (OTC) “hypoallergenic” foods can often confound a food allergy diagnosis. Studies have shown that these OTC foods may often contain the very allergens the owner is trying to avoid and cross contamination in the manufacturing process is also a common occurrence. Dr. James Peterson is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in Emergency Veterinary Medicine in San Antonio, and has practiced both Emergency and Small Animal Medicine in San Antonio for over 20 years. He is currently a director of Mission Pet Emergency in Northwest San Antonio and owns Hill Country Animal Hospital & The Palms Pet Resort in Helotes, TX.

When he was rescued six years ago, he was in terrible need of a good grooming. Elise, from Grooming by Gloria, has been grooming Cracker for four years as well his sister April. Both Cracker & April enjoy coming for their grooms with Elise and always leave happy and refreshed. Grooming by Gloria-4961 Acorn Hill (210) 654-1350

HUGS KISSES LOVE RINGS ROSES TEDDIES VALENTINES
Fun Pet Facts • In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve.” • Many believe the ‘X’ symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn’t write their names signed in front of a witness with an ‘X.’ The ‘X’ was then kissed to show their sincerity. • Physicians of the 1800’s commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love. • Approximately 110 million roses, mostly red, will be sold and delivered within the three-day Valentine’s Day time period. • The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife. • 73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine’s Day are men, while only 27 percent are women. • In 1537, England’s King Henry VII officially declared February 14th the holiday of St. Valentine’s Day.

Tater&Tot! what a happy new year for
BY FELICIA NIÑO
J
anuary 2014 was a great month for Tater and Tot! Tater, now known as Koko, and Tot were transferred to the San Antonio Humane Society from Animal Care Services in October 2013. The moment we saw these two sweet and adorable tri-colored Chihuahua mixes, we knew that they were inseparable.
Six year old Tater was available for adoption in our Puppy Palace, when the Rochen family walked in and immediately fell in love with her. Soon after taking Tater home, they learned about her one and a half year old buddy and possibly son, Tot, who was put into a foster home due to a spot of ringworm on his back leg. The Rochen family kept in touch with the SAHS staff for months as to when Tot would be available for adoption with the hope of reuniting the two. On January 2, 2014, the moment we had all been waiting for finally occurred. Tater and Tot were reunited after 3 months of being apart and it was obvious that they remembered each other. Tot stayed right by Tater’s side and followed her all around the SAHS socialization yard. After spending time with Tater and Tot, the Rochen family knew that this was a bond that couldn’t be broken again, so they decided to begin the adoption process. Once all was said and done, the Rochen family welcomed Tot into their amazing family and we are thrilled to see these two cute friends go to a loving home! As previously mentioned, Tot was put into our Foster Program as many of our adoptable animals are. Imagine a puppy or kitty needing to be bottle fed, an adult dog with a broken jaw, kittens abandoned with no shelter, food or water, a terrified cat who needs socialization, or a sweet Chihuahua, like Tot, needing a temporary home until ready for adoption. Well, this is something we face far too often and as a no-kill shelter, usually full to
capacity, we do not have an area to house these animals with a chance of cross contamination as a concern or staff on hand 24/7. Luckily we have an outstanding group of foster parents ready to care for these animals at any given moment. Even so, we are always hoping that more people will join our foster team and help in saving these precious lives. I know what you’re thinking, fostering with the SAHS sounds awesome but how much money will it cost? And the answer is: it will cost you absolutely nothing! One of the fantastic aspects of our foster program is that we provide everything that the foster will need; from bedding, blankets, towels, food, medications, everything! All we ask is that you show them love and affection and get them ready for adoption. If you’d like to become a foster parent or to find our foster wishlist full of supplies needed for our fosters, please visit SAhumane.org/foster. Felicia Niño is the Communication Associate for the San Antonio Humane Society. She has been with the SAHS for over 5 years and absolutely loves spending time with her 2 Dachshund Chihuahua mixes, Browny and Duke, and 2 Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Sherlock and Brutus Beefcake “Beefy”, all SAHS Alumni.
