& design tips ever summer
is a wisp of a woman with a pixie haircut that both defies and defines her bold, forward-thinking approach to design. Hoping to glean a few decorating tips from her twenty plus years of experience, I got, in addition to some great ideas, a fascinating, brief education on the future of design.
If you’re considering any sort of renovation, building out, or rehab project, Diane will mention incorporating “Universal Design” principles into the plan. It’s smart planning that plays directly into your ROI. “Universal Design,” Diane says, “is the industry standard term for creating a home environment in which you can remain in your home [should you have reduced mobility like the need for a wheelchair] while maintaining your quality of life and daily routine. In practical terms, it’s the ability to navigate and operate the kitchen, bath and upper levels of your home with ease and comfort.” Diane is one of the few designers in the area to have earned the Certification for Aging in Place (CAP)
By wEndy scHlEsingEr
conferred through the Home Builders Association.
Even with young couples Diane will address the issue because you never know when a parent may need to move in with you, or God forbid something should happen to a child or even yourself. These principles are especially pertinent when considering kitchens and baths. Diane explains “The design elements include but are not limited to: flooring, space mobility, lighting and depending on the impairment, ease of entry in and out of the home.” She adds “there are wonderful products on the market that are sophisticated and beautiful to own that can be incorporated to function for everyone in the household.”

KEEPing uP
witH cHAnging cOdEs
Another design aspect Diane focuses on is the area of “sustainability”. “Creating an environment for your home that is not only beautiful for all to enjoy,” Diane says, “but a healthy approach in eliminating toxic materials and finishes keeps the entire family healthy as well.” She explains “most of our CO2 is exuded from commercial buildings - not just cars and bussesbut by all the ‘off-gassing’ by carpeting, furniture, and fabric.” Consequently, come 2030, commercial buildings will have a goal of ‘net zero energy’ meaning “we’re dispelling and replacing gas. What goes out is going to come back in. So the carbon footprint is zero.” Residential property codes will follow. If all this eco-talk leaves you cold, keep in mind, that when it comes time to sell your property, if your home has been updated to meet current and nearfuture building codes, your property will be among the most desirable of listings.
While this may seem futuristic, there
are simple ways you can accommodate these changes today. Diane, who is a LEED A.P. (Leadership in Environmental and Educational Design, Accredited Professional) recommends, for starters, using low or no VOC (Volatile Organic Chemicals) paint. Found in all major brands and big box stores, low or no VOC paint has removed all the toxic and formaldehydes, so you can paint even during the winter months because that noxious paint odor has been removed as well. The cost point, Diane says, “may be a little more expensive but it depends on what you’re comparing it to. The quality is much better.”
Diane’s other recommendation is to “use recycled carpet, made from all those plastic bottles we’ve tossed into the trash for the past 25 years – but will never disintegrate.” Available at all major carpet and department stores, there are endless colors and patterns to select from and the softness is still there. And “the price points are comparable and you’ll have the satisfaction of helping your planet.”
quicK tiPs fOr suMMEr
With all this talk of net zero and Universal Design, we still wanted to address some of the more fun aspects of design. For summer Diane suggests adding slip covers to your favorite chair and fresh flower bouquets where ever you need a splash of color. Diane advises, “Area rugs can be seasonal” so consider changing those out as well.
For the outdoors Diane says “Definitely if you have a porch of any size, it doesn’t have to be big, you bring the inside outside. [Use] planters with fresh flowers, get yourself an outdoor area rug, put your chairs out and make it closer to a true living space. An outdoor area rug [is especially helpful] because they’re so inexpensive and it basically pulls the whole act together.”
Whether you’re simply repainting or contemplating a major renovation, the key is to think of your favorite things with an eye to the future. It will be beneficial to your family, your pocketbook and the planet will thank you as well. ut

living spaces summertime
By rOByn wAlKEr
Now that summer has arrived, it’s time to turn your outdoor living spaces into a cool, relaxing and informal summertime oasis. You can entertain outdoors and serve meals in your outdoor room. An outdoor room is also a great place for parties and family get togethers. All you need to transform your outdoor areas into an outdoor room is a set of new outdoor furniture and a few accessories such as outdoor rugs, colorful pillows, potted palms and summer flowers for a lush, vibrant summertime look.

If you have a traditional sunroom, screened-in porch, patio or a veranda, you can decorate any of these rooms so that they are cozy, yet casual.
Forshaw, Terra and Schnarr’s Hardware in Ladue have a great selection of weatherproof outdoor furniture for your outdoor living areas. You can buy tables, chairs, benches chaises, sofas and settees that will create an inviting and relaxed ambiance.
If your taste is traditional, opt for a set of weatherproof resin furniture that has the look of wicker. If your taste is more contemporary, there’s a great selection of cast aluminum furniture as well as modern, sleek metal outdoor furniture. Colorful painted Adirondack chairs are also a great outdoor decorating idea. They’ll add an element of nostalgic charm to any outdoor area and they’re available at Forshaw and Home Decorators Collection.
An easy and affordable way to liven up your outdoor living areas is with colorful patterned cushions. If you want to make your own cushions, you can choose a colorful outdoor fabric such as the outdoor fabrics you’ll find online at Calico Corners and Artistic Fabrics.
A wonderful source for unique handmade decorator pillows is The Great Cover Up, located in Ladue. The Great Cover Up’s interior designer, Teddy Karl, makes these gorgeous decorator pillows and there’s always a large selection to choose from. Joy Tribout, a chic interior design shop in Ladue, has decorator pillows by Caroline Cole that will give your outdoor living spaces a professional decorator look.
There are all kinds of decorative outdoor rugs in solids and patterns that will give your outdoor room a professional decorator look. We especially like the Dash & Albert striped and patterned cotton rugs that you can find at Mary Tuttle’s in Chesterfield. Another good choice for outdoor rugs are the casual sisal rugs with colored borders that are weatherproof and add an element of summer style to your outdoor room. They’re available at Home Decorators Collection. To create a lush, tropical summertime atmosphere, add potted palm trees to your outdoor room. You can also create an instant flower garden if you plant colorful gerbera daisies in large clay pots and arrange them around your outdoor furniture. You’ll find attractive planters at Twigs & Moss and The Gifted Gardener.
Now that you have these great decorating ideas for beautifying your outdoor living areas, we think you’ll want to spend all of your time in your new outdoor room all summer long. ut

Trending now for summer is the bangle bracelet. When you wear bangle bracelets, don’t be timid and wear just one bracelet. Make a bold fashion statement and wear multiple bangle bracelets for a layered effect. You can mix and match your bracelets to create a high-fashion look by combining an armful of bracelets in silver, gold, gemstones, Lucite, wood and enamel. We think that wearing multiple bangle bracelets in a combination of styles, colors and designs is a chic fashion look that adds an element of luxe style and subtle sophistication to your vibrant summer wardrobe.
If your style is glamorous and ultra sophisticated, you’ll adore Alwand Vahan’s high-impact sterling silver, gold and diamond bracelets. For a high-fashion look, wear two or three of these exquisite designer bracelets from Novak Jewelers. Did you know that Alwand Vahan’s fabulous designer jewelry is worn by Hollywood celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Eva Mendes?
We especially like the modern look of Alexis Bittar’s trendsetting Lucite bracelets from Nordstrom. Bittar’s Modernist Lucite bracelet and Miss Havisham skinny Lucite bangles can be worn with everything in your fashion wardrobe, for day or night, casual or formal.

There’s nothing that compares to wearing a status bracelet that’s handcrafted in precious 18-karat gold. We especially like this aweinspiring gold bracelet designed with heavy yellow and white gold squares from Curt Parker Jewelers. Wear this reversible gold square bracelet for day or night, for casual or formal, and expect loads of compliments. If you really want to dress to impress, complete the look with an elegant gold link necklace and gold earrings.
You’ll treasure this enchanting gold bracelet designed by Lauren Sigman from Ylang Ylang Lauren Sigman’s “Life In Color” jewelry combines her love of flowers. The collection is handmade in 14 karat and 18 karat gold and fine silver metals combined with precious and semiprecious gemstones.
This extraordinary looking diamond and 14 karat yellow gold bracelet from Timekeepers’ Estate Collection is a fashion classic that you will treasure for a lifetime. This exceptional estate bracelet contains three carats of brilliant diamonds that sparkle and shine.

Local designers Caroline Williard and Amy Johnson place St. Louis on the map of the fashion industry
Local Designer Caroline Williard 's clothing appeals to those who appreciate all that is unique, romanticized, and abstract.
Williard carves out her niche in the fashion world through creating custom clothing that will evoke an emotional response not only from the person who wears it, but onlookers as well. She strives to create garments that demand attention through their detail as well as their abstract qualities.
Williard designs clothing for a variety of occasions and age groups. Her Bridedoll line features wedding fashions. She also designs haute and modern couture pieces for her CWCOUTURE line, menswear for her Infinite1 line, and children's fashions for her Orkid line of clothing. Her designs are inspired by art, music, culture, and all things unexplainable.
Williard attests that she does not regret taking the leap into the uncertain, sometimes cutthroat world of fashion. Each day, she finds fulfillment in what she does. After all, fashion was always a passion of Williard's, and owning her own business was always a dream. Now that she has brought her dream to life, she takes pride in seeing people wear her whimsical, breathtaking designs.
Although she describes herself as a "self- taught"
designer, Williard credits her mother, and several collegiate level clothing design textbooks for teaching her everything she needed in order to succeed in fashion design.
Currently, Williard is working with local boutiques, and hopes to feature her designs in select stores in the near future. In the meantime, her designs are available at www. cw-couture.com, www.etsy.com/shop/coutureholic, and www. etsy.com/shop/bridedoll. Contact: caroline@cw-couture.com.

St. Louis fashion designer Amy Johnson unveils KayOss in the Central West End
This summer, fashionistas can find order among the chaos with the unveiling of the KayOss Designs pop-up boutique.
Ironically, because Amy Johnson’s eye-catching pieces can be made to fit each individual customer in an array of colors and fabrics, shopping for KayOss Designs will be far from chaotic. So what is in the name? Johnson believes that if you pursue your dreams and practice what you love, you will find order within the chaos. When she realized that she could turn her passion for design into a career, Johnson made the switch from full-time environmental engineer to full-time fashion designer, a change that led her to find order amidst the chaos of everyday life. The concept of Chaos seemed to be fitting as a name for her designs, but Johnson sought something more personal; something that all women could relate to. Enter KayOss, a figure that all women can relate to. KayOss is a student, an artist, a career woman, a best friend, and a stunning socialite, but most of all she is living through her heart. She is the name of Johnson's ever-evolving line of clothing, designed to make those who wear it feel confident, beautiful, fun, classy and unique.
Unlike many fashion designers, Johnson's designs do not take shape on a
sketchpad, but rather in her own hands. By feeling the textures of various fabrics and materials, Johnson envisions how the fabric will take shape as wearable art.
According to Johnson, "we are put on this earth to create", and she continues to do so through her designs. In addition, Johnson is in the process of launching Skirts for Children, where she will use her design expertise to create skirts that will be donated to young girls facing traumatic circumstances. The intention is to empower young girls through providing an outlet for creative and individual expression. Girls who receive the skirts will be featured on the website www.skirtsforchildren. com. Johnson has made this philanthropic endeavor possible through the KayOss Movement, a springboard to help others find ways to live more healthfully, and to heal through natural methods. Proceeds from the KayOss Movement will directly benefit Skirts for Children.
KayOss Designs are on display and available for purchase throughout the summer at 234 N. Euclid Avenue, tuesday through saturday from 11am-6pm. Amy Johnson's KayOss Designs are also available at Mister Guy Clothiers and 10Denza. For more information, visit www. kayossdesigns.com. ut

skin
Here are eight simple steps that you can take to prevent your skin from aging. If you adhere to a good skincare regimen, you will be able to keep a youthful, healthy glow to your skin and defy the aging process.
By rOByn wAlKEr
1. AVOid sun EXPOsurE
The best way to keep you skin from premature aging is to protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun, not just during the summer months, but all year long. Avoiding sun exposure minimizes wrinkles and skin cancer. Using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 factor is essential to protecting your skin. When you’re in direct sunlight, always remember to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. If you swim, be sure to reapply sunscreen after you’ve been swimming. You also need to avoid tanning beds. If you want a sun tanned look, applying a bronzing lotion or spray tanning are good alternatives.
2. dOn’t sMOKE
If you smoke, you need to stop smoking. Smoking contributes to premature aging of the skin. Smoking also increases wrinkles, discoloration, skin cancer and the breakdown of collagen in the skin. If you need help in quitting the smoking habit, talk with your doctor about medications to help you kick the habit.

3. EXErcisE rEgulArly
Establish a regular exercise routine. Exercise helps to promote capillary functioning and increases oxygen to the skin. It also flushes out body toxins, helps to relieve stress, promotes relaxation and sleep. Walking, swimming, riding a bike, playing tennis or golf and jogging are beneficial ways to add exercise to your lifestyle.
4. EAt HEAltHy
Anti-Aging fOOds
Follow a diet of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, fish and fiber. Use olive oil and decrease your intake of saturated fats. Foods that are good include blueberries, avocadoes, broccoli, cabbage, radishes, spinach, chocolate, red wine and omega oils.
7. MAintAin A rEgulAr sKin cArE rOutinE
Use anti-aging skin care products everyday to promote healthy skin. Also wash your face and moisturize your face at least twice a day.
8. cHEMicAl PEEls
5. drinK PlEnty Of wAtEr
Water helps to hydrate the skin and remove waste products from the body. It is recommend that you drink six to eight glasses of water every day.
6. dEEP clEAnsing fAciAls
Deep cleansing facials every four to six weeks prevent dehydration of the skin and increase skin moisture production. Facials also prevent clogged pores.
Chemical peels help to decrease dead skin cells, replenish healthy cells and increase skin firmness. ut

When watching “Mad Men”, I often wonder what Don Draper would have thought about Maplewood in the 1960s. Yes, this is pure fiction and fantasy but If you just imagine the suave and urbane ad exec being sent to St. Louis for a pitch to a company like McDonnell Douglass, TWA or the soon to become internationally known corporation, Sunnen Products Company, it is not too difficult to visualize.
Maplewood Maplewood: t HE n A
cOusin HugO's
PArAMOunt JEwElErs
Here is how I see it:
Don Draper leaves the island of Manhattan and flies off to Lambert Airport where he hails a taxi to Sunnen at Hanley and Manchester. Sadly, he finds the Sunnen executive he is supposed to meet has been called to attend a funeral just down the street at Jay B. Smith Funeral Home and he is asked if it is at all possible to come back the next day. Of course, he understands and graciously offers his condolences. So now what? He is restless (as a true fan knows he will be) and finds himself on his own in the middle of the day, so he rambles down to Cousin Hugo’s, a bar and grill on Laclede Station Road. The bartender barely knows what to do with the bourbon drinking, fast talking, suit wearing fellow sitting at his bar but soon starts to spill his own story about the shopping mecca of St. Louis County. “It ain’t no Fifth Avenue,” the bartender says, nodding his head to the east,” but our Sutton Loop is one heck of a place to shop and get your gal a nice gift.”
Intrigued, Don leaves and heads over to investigate. The bartender has ensured him that the best place to get his gal something shiny is Paramount Jewelers on Manchester, “Don’t worry, you cannot miss it, the darn sign is big and it really glows something bright, even in the middle of the day.”
The first thing Don notices is, this is no Grand Central Station but it ain't no Sahara Desert, either. The taxi overshoots his destination and he is dropped off at Manchester and Marshall where there is a burst of pedestrian activity that he is accustomed to and he easily weaves into the flow of foot traffic heading toward the big bright sign in search of something for his wife.
As he makes his way west on Manchester, he gets a whiff of tobacco, turpentine and grass seed. It takes him back to his childhood and stops him dead in his tracks. He is blocking the sidewalk now and knows it but right in front of him is a hardware store like one he has not seen since he made his way to the big city. Scheidt Hardware has creaky wood floors and is abuzz with talk of broken toilets, paint colors and orders of Dickies work clothes. Don finds himself looking at the stacks of grass seed bags for no reason at all. A clerk approaches him and with the simple line, “May I help you?” the spell is broken and Don continues his original journey.
The bartender was right, Paramount Jewelers was not difficult

to find at all. Inside, the shop is stocked full of watches and jewelry like Bulova and Citizen, everything he could get in Manhattan but for so much less money. He feels like a kid in a candy store but realizes he needs more cash. The clerk walks him out onto the sidewalk and points across the street to Citizens National Bank. Don learns that he can use a “walk-up” window if he doesn’t wish to go in, “It was the first one in the Midwest!” the clerk boasts.
Don gets his cash and another sign catches his attention before he returns to Paramount Jewelers, it says, “Empire Supply Co.” He stops a man walking down the street, “Hey buddy, what is that place?” The man replies that it is a hardware store that sells glass and doors, etc. that opened the same year as the Empire State Building was built, “Not from around here are you?” Don nods and says thanks.
He finds himself oddly grounded and feeling at home. He spends the rest of the day exploring the main street and doesn’t miss Manhattan for a moment. He is so giddy, he ends the day with a cold beer and a game of bowling at Saratoga Lanes; a bowling alley on the second floor, can you imagine?
OK, we can all dream can’t we? The reality is that all of the businesses that Mr. Draper visited are still in operation!
The fun part of all of this is today, you can actually find Don Draper on Manchester, well, in the form of a luscious glycerin based soap with rum and bourbon scents at Maven, a boutique featuring handmade bath products. Believe me it is wonderful! Also, wonderful are the artisans and owneroperators you will meet in most of the food shops, restaurants and boutiques along Manchester and Sutton.
Long gone is the streetcar that brought the throngs of people that made Maplewood the shopping mecca it once was but also gone is the sarcastic tone, “last one out, don’t forget to turn out the lights.” Like any good drama, we will give you the good juicy parts here and gloss

over the days when people drove out of their way to avoid the area.
Hey Folks: the lights are on and the pink glow of Paramount Jewelers’ sign (now a landmark) basks over the diners and bar crowd that ventures out to partake of the locavore food culture that seems to dominate the Maplewood dining scene. Schlafly Bottleworks started it all back in 2003 and then the Manchester strip started sprouting with new restaurants. Many of Maplewood’s eateries are regionally recognized (some nationally!) One will find Acero, Water Street, Foundation Grounds, Home Wine Kitchen, Boogaloo, The Post Sports Bar and Grill, The Crow’s Nest, Las Palmas, Maya Café, Tiffany’s Original Diner, Stone Spiral Coffee & Curios and The Wood.
Nightlife abounds with such options as the new Orbit Pinball Lounge (featuring pinball and skee-ball), the historic Saratoga Lanes and The Focal Point (considered the region’s best listening room that boasts national music performers for low ticket prices) and some restaurants double as live music venues, too.
Nestled in with the restaurants on Manchester and Sutton are unique shops like Charm Boutique, Gisèle’s, Airedale Antics, Bouffant Daddy, Femme, Screaming Mimi, Roots and Tigerlily. Maplewood also offers a destination for foodies seeking the perfect ingredients for their favorite recipe and one cannot go wrong with such artisan food purveyors as Cheryl’s Herbs, Vom Fass, Kakao Chocolate, Penzeys Spices and for the perfect beverage pairing, Saint Louis Cellars.
The beauty of Maplewood is that we offer the personal touch, the owner-operator, "the mom and pop" or whatever you want to call it. The owner is most likely the person you will meet, the one who actually waits on you. Keep in mind, they are working hard to realize the American Dream. You will find great service and an owner who knows all of the other business owners. Just ask, no matter what store you are in, the owner can point you to the next best great place. Yes, that is Maplewood: Somewhere between Mayberry and Metropolis. ut

Wednesday night is Open Mic and we have concerts most nights. The shop's park side location is an ideal place to meet-up with friends. Our menu includes home made pies and other sweet treats, flatbread pizzas, sandwiches, fine teas, seasonal beverages, and of course the best coffee in town. Open for brunch on the weekends.

hong kong from greetings

Hello from Hong Kong! We did it! I am writing this to you from the Conrad Hotel in the Central section of Hong Kong Island! United’s flight out of O’Hare to Hong Kong was about 15 ½ hours and the girls slept a bit but John and I were just too excited! The airport was incredible. We were amazed at the dramatic, beautiful scenery between the airport and our hotel. Breathtaking mountains, the most exotic flowering trees and the nature, topography and colors look exactly what I always imagined this part of the world to be. Although we are located right in the middle of the city, our hotel is nestled up against Victoria's Peak. Our view from our room on the 55th floor overlooks the mountain. We were so tired when we settled in our hotel that we only had enough energy to eat at a local mall, the chicest mall I've ever seen. Since Hong Kong was a British colony from 1841 till 1997, most the signage is in English or bi-lingual so no worries! Would you believe that we ate at an American restaurant! I had a Coors Light and a Swiss Mushroom burger! Tomorrow, we will do some serious exploring as well as begin eating our way through Hong Kong and all the local Asian cuisine we can stomach. I can't believe we are actually here. It feels like a dream!

We took a cab to the pier (Victoria Harbor) and got on a ferry to the island of Lantau then a bus through the mountains and rural areas to Ngong Ping Plateau. There we made our first visit to a Buddhist monastery. As we walked through a path lined with palm trees and pink flowers, we could smell the incense offerings before we saw the temple itself. What a tranquil place! We ate in the monastery at the monk's cafe. It was there we had our first Chinese food, all vegetarian as the food is prepared by the monks themselves. We had fried noodles, coconut bean curd, mango bean curd, sesame bean curd, mango jelly and mango pudding. Even the

kids liked everything! It was wonderful! Then we climbed up 260 steps to the Tian Tan Buddha, the world’s largest seated Buddha. Awesome! We took a crazy bus ride back down through the hills and took the subway back to Hong Kong Island. Tired, once again, we simply went back to our hotel by cab and ate Thai food this time. Tomorrow, our goal is to wake up before 10am.
dAy 3
We managed to wake up at 9:30 this morning, ate American pancakes at the mall then we went to Victoria's Peak -the highest point on Hong Kong Island and took a tram that brought us near the top. What a view! We walked
around the peak on a beautiful forested trail that circled the top of the mountain. The trail was about 2 and 1/2 miles) but we took about 1 and 1/2 hours enjoying the nature and views. A bus took us back down to our hotel to get ready to meet John's business colleague, Marie and her family for a real Chinese dinner in Hong Kong's Time Square. Marie’s husband and two young children were fun and were excited to have us try REAL Chinese food so they kept ordering all kinds of dishes and soups. They brought out a large fish and placed it in the middle and it was looking at me as if it wanted to eat me! It was a very memorable meal and I am glad we did it!

We spent a good part of our day traveling to and from Tai O, an old fishing village where the houses still stand on stilts off of the edge of Lantau Island. The sun came out for the first time since we arrived four days ago and the humidity turned up to such a high level, it drained our energy and made us tired before we even started! As we walked through narrow little streets and markets filled with fish, some alive, some half alive and most others dried, the smell of all the fish made us a bit queasy so soon we had enough! The town was not for the faint hearted or shall I say, for sensitive noses. We called a taxi back to Tung Chung, the main city of Lantau then caught a subway ride back to Hong Kong Island. The taxi took us through the mountains and had to stop a few times for there were wild cows roaming freely on the roads.
We couldn't stomach anything much other than Pizza Hut at the subway station and now we are dead tired in our hotel room. By the way, we had Starbucks for breakfast this morning. Are you starting to see a pattern here? Perhaps we don't have the stomachs of steel that we thought we had for Chinese cuisine. We are beginning to feel grateful for all the American restaurants that one can find here throughout the city. Believe it or not, there is an AMC movie theatre downstairs so I am going to take the girls to see a movie after John goes to work tomorrow.
dAy 5
The girls and I had a much needed day at the pool! That's all we did today, swim and read American magazines that we found in a grocery store downstairs. This hotel has great service! Pool side waiters, a towel waiter and a life guard! Tomorrow, the girls and I plan to go to Disneyland for the day.
dAy 6
The girls and I spent a very humid day today at Disneyland. It was small but just perfect for one day. The park was composed of Fantasyland, Toy Story Land, Main Street, Adventure land and Tomorrow Land. The girls were so good and flexible and it was a great day at Disney!

Today, we went to the Chi Lin Nunnery, a Buddhist Temple in Kowloon, founded in 1934 but rebuilt in the 1990’s in the style of the Tang Dynasty (600 – 900 C.E.) The buildings were built without the use of any iron nails, using an interlocking system cut into the wood to hold them in place. The Chi Lin Nunnery buildings are the only buildings to be built in this style in modern day Hong Kong. The temple halls and the Chinese garden in front of the nunnery are
open to the public daily without charge.
We walked around the temple and gardens where we ate some Buddhist vegetarian dishes. Then we went to the Ladies Market in Mong Kok. The market specializes in women's clothing, accessories, food stalls selling noodles, seafood, etc. I didn’t realize that according to the Guinness World Records, Mong Kok has the highest population density in the world! It was so crowded and hot today, we only spent 15 minutes looking around and then we jumped back onto the subway! Yes, just like a good old fashioned St. Louis summer day. Now I can understand why most of this city is connected by walkways and underground tunnels, it's to avoid the extreme heat!
We were already getting tired. Since it was our last night in Hong Kong, we went to Victoria Harbor and watched the light show. Lights everywhere on the buildings, fireworks bursting out from the tops of skyscrapers! It was absolutely incredible. What a way to remember this dynamic, wonderful city! I will never forget this trip of a lifetime.
Love to all! ut

Just in time for the long, dog days of summer we have several hot spots to keep you cool.
Get yourself primped for poolside at Tinge Salon & Design Atelier (9664 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-395-5810, designsbydeyne. com). Deyne Goering has studied hair design in three continents, been an industry educator for the who’s who of the hair world including Aveda, Bumble & bumble, Rusk, Matrix and Logics but has chosen our little corner of the world to grace us with her expertise. Known for her exquisite, innovative hair designs she’s become the go to girl for brides who want something special. These designs often include custom, one-of-a-kind hair accessories Deyne makes herself. She’ll even come to your home or hotel for a nominal charge - great for weddings or any special event where it may be difficult to get away mid-day. Tinge is a full service salon specializing in coloring, smoothing and straightening, waves, waxings and lash tints. They are also a certified salon offering Platinum Seamless hair additions giving you thicker or longer hair, or both. Deyne and her staff will work with the entire family to make them look their absolute best.
Though there’s really no bad time for a margarita, somehow they seem to taste even better in the summer. St. Louis’ latest addition to the Mexican restaurant scene is the unique La
Cantina. (35 N. Gore, WebsterGroves, 314968-3256, lacantina. com). Sister to Amigos in Kirkwood, La Cantina offers an authentic Mexican cantina experience serving “Botanas”, Mexican for little bites or Mexican appetizers. Sort of like Mexican tapas. This is the traditional menu for rural Mexican cantinas complemented by authentic margaritas which means 100% Hornitas Plata tequila, cointreau, fresh lime juice and agave nectar. And now you can treat yourself to their award winning margaritas at Happy Hour prices ($5 instead of $7.99) from 3 - 5 in the afternoons. The handmade food is beautiful and presented in a warm, party atmosphere with a wonderful patio.
Just when you didn’t think it could get any better, our beloved Trattoria Marcella is bringing their amazing menu to west county with its sister Mia Sorella (14464 Clayton Road - at Henry Road, just west of 141Ballwin). Phone and website are in progress but check Trattoria Marcella’s social media sites for updates. Set to open the end of August they promise “casual Italian comfort foods with an emphasis on hand stretched, brick oven pizzas made with the best “00” flour from Italy.” Mia Sorella will have some of the same flavors we’ve come to love at Marcella but with some new dishes and a focus on hand-made pastas. One of the highlights of the new space is the restored, hundred year old, walnut bar creating a more relaxed atmosphere. Diners will also have a choice of two great outdoor patios; behind the restaurant overlooking a lake, or a smaller patio in front. Lunch will be available Monday through Friday, dinner, Monday through Saturday.
St. Louis may not have a beach, but we do have all the amenities you’d want in a fine ocean front resort. Of course, then there’s the weather... ut
