Like other methods of cardiovascular exercise, both running and walking provide innumerable benefits to overall health. Just to name a few, both forms of cardiovascular exercise can help you to maintain or attain a healthy body weight, keep your heart in tip-top shape, melt away stress, and boost your mood. So, which is better; running or walking? or are running and walking both equally beneficial? The answer varies from one person to another, depending on personal fitness goals.

In terms of weight loss or weight maintenance, you will burn roughly the same amount of calories by walking one mile as you will by running one mile. However, you will undoubtedly run a mile faster than you will walk a mile, thus you will burn roughly the same amount of calories at a much faster rate by running than you will by walking.

Hypothetically, let's say you have only 30 minutes to exercise, and your primary goal is weight reduction. Weight reduction occurs when you expend more calories than you consume. In order to lose one pound in a week, you will need to burn 3500 calories through increased physical activity, or eliminate 3500 calories from your diet. Needless to say you will burn substantially more calories during 30 minutes of running than you would during 30 minutes of walking. Therefore, if weightloss is a primary goal, but the thought alone of running

If a woman who weighs 125 pounds walks at a moderate pace (3 mph, or a 20 minute mile) for 30 minutes, she will burn approximately 98 calories. In order to burn the same amount of calories walking, the 125-pound woman would have to walk for 85 minutes. Susan says, “If you have heirlooms such as old china, crystal or antique, display them in your home, don’t keep them hidden away. For example, if you have fine heirloom china and crystal, take it out of the china cabinet and use it. So many people think that the antiques, crystal and china that they inherited from relatives is museum-quality and shouldn’t be used, but I suggest that you display your treasures, even if they’re a bit quirky, in a prominent place in your home. Your heirlooms are great conversation pieces and they provide enjoyment.”

She adds, “I help my clients select colors that compliment them, that make them feel good. You should always be comfortable with the colors that you select for your home. Color affects you, so you should choose colors that you can live with, colors that you feel good about.”

Even when Walter Edwards was a small child in East Alton Illinois, he loved homes! He would actually ask his parents to take him to open houses so he could see the design, the color, and to feel the excitement of walking in a building and to new possibilities. St. Louis has greatly benefited from this man’s aspirations to follow his passion. He bought and sold homes, refurbished and enhanced many houses in our area so it is no wonder that his own home located in Town & Country is tasteful, elegant and quite beautiful.

Always enterprising, enthusiastic and resourceful, he finished high school his junior year then studied computer programing in college. When he was ready for a part time job, he went to the school job placement services which sent him to work at the Crescent Planing Mill Company as a bookkeeper. The company was an architectural woodworking company, providing cabinets and doors to commercial contractors and certainly contributed to turning Edwards’ lifelong dream in to reality. After 2 years, they promoted him to a draftsman and paid for his schooling. Two years later, another promotion came and he became an estimator, retiring as Vice President after 20 years in 1998. His last big project was Washington University Law School and is justifiably very proud to have estimated and negotiated the contract. This amazing story of this passionate man continues throughout his life.

After retirement in 1998, he started real estate school and living now in Town & Country, joined the local Coldwell Banker Gundaker and ranked top 10 in sales before becoming a broker in 2010.

He started Edwards Real Estate with his office located in St. Louis Hills. During all this time, Edwards acquired homes and apartments in West County and the South Hampton area.

“My enjoyment is taking distressed property and making something positive and creating a nice home for someone to rent. This seems to have a positive impact with tenants who love and sometimes want to purchase.” the amiable Mr. Edwards answered when asked what he does for fun. He truly loves what he does and loves working and creating with wood. His rental apartments and homes have wood floors and lots of large crown moldings that he himself installed.

In fact, in his current home in Town & Country, crown molding is found in every single room including bathrooms and laundry! The two story Colonial is a 6 bedroom, 4 ½ bath, 4,800 square foot home was built in 1979 and sits on an acre of land. His attention to detail is evident everywhere. You notice his unique additional nuances to the house. The octagon window at the top of the stairs which lets the nature and light into an otherwise enclosed area. The cherry cabinets that Walter himself installed are an outstandingly aesthetically pleasing contrast to the brown-tones in the granite counter tops. The beauty is so striking that you can’t help but notice the additional use of wood all throughout the house. Sophisticated and classy in traditional style, the oak furniture in the den, the 100 year plus furniture of his grandparents in the guest bedroom, and yes, the beautifully crafted molding create a home of earthy, neutral tones which spill out the many large windows and serene

scenic views. The 20 X 40 outside Gunite pool does not disrupt the natural beauty. The picturesque backdrop is pleasing to the eye because the pool is set before a lovely woodsy copse and rock bluffs, complete with an enchanting, poetic wooden bridge crossing an equally charming creek.

Further expression of Walter’s personality is found on the lower level! Here is where he entertains his many friends with a bar and kitchen area with a walkout to the pool. The wine bar top was made from old wine crates! Breaking the lids and sides of the wooden wine cases of Walter’s favorite wines, he glued and pin nailed them with a finish of poly

urethane. Not only is it a great conversation piece but absolutely beautiful! Next to the bar, stands an 80 year old, solid concrete Dalmatian (which was festively decorated with Mardi Gras beads when I saw it). Duke the Dalmatian belonged to Walter’s grandparents and now guards the wine bar.

Walter Edwards’ house is his story, not only of his passion for wood and design, but his love of family and family history. A picture of his Great-Great Grandfather in the original oval frame hangs above an antique clear vase which appears in the actual photo above.

The blonde wood piano, which he began playing at the age of seven, sits in a special place in his home. His mother played every church service for 10 years while he was

growing up and Walter filled in if his mother was absent. He has played the blues in more than one club throughout the area!

The youngest of three brothers, Walter has experienced more losses than most. His oldest brother was electrocuted and his other brother developed child leukemia at the age of 3. Walter was a perfect match for his brother and twice was a bone marrow donor. The brother later passed at the age of 30 from a brain tumor. Most recently, his mother passed then 2 years later, his father, who lived with Walter followed soon after. But Walter has a best friend and a best girl! His mother’s sister, “Aunt Lovie” who he talks to almost every day! Aunt Lovie is amazing as well. She is in her 80’s and she and Walter love nothing more than to enjoy 4 wheeling

on the family property in Illinois where Walter built a lovely log cabin home.

Walter Edwards is so like his home. He is warm, friendly and, dare I say, extremely good looking. His life has been so busy in the past with family and career that he is now looking forward to traveling and enjoying this more relaxed portion of his life. About 1,100 miles southeast of Miami, amidst sapphire blue ocean waters, lay the alluring, tranquil US Virgin Islands where swaying palm trees towering above the sandy beaches live in wonderful temperatures averaging 77 degrees in the winter and 83 degrees in the summer.

As I sit writing, sweltering in 90 degree heat combined with St. Louis humidity, I am so very ready to visit this diverse tropical wonderland. Composed of three major islands, St. John, St. Croix and St. Thomas, this destination is as convenient as it is welcoming. Why? Even though from St. Louis, you have to make a connection when flying, you don’t need a passport! You also don’t have to worry

about converting your electrical currents or your currency as you are still in a United States territory. The flights are not unbearable as most connect in Miami which is about two and a half to three hours away, depending on which is your chosen island. American, Delta, United all offer connecting service to St. Thomas and St. Croix, however, St. John does not have an airport. To get to St. John, you would fly into St.

Thomas then take a taxi to the interisland ferry dock and climb aboard! The 20 minute ride docks in Cruz Bay also known as “Love City”.

In 1493, on his second voyage, Columbus named the islands Las once Mil Virgenes (11,000 virgins). In the late 1600’s – 1700’s, many European countries vied for ownership but the Danish folks won St. Thomas and St. John. They built their plantations and the slave trade evolved. Bringing more than 200,000 slaves, primarily from Africa’s west coast, they were brought to the islands to do the backbreaking harvesting of cane, cotton and indigo. St. Thomas developed as a trade center. In 1848, freedom was granted to the slaves. (note: before the Civil War!) During WWI the US purchased the islands from Denmark for $25 million in gold. Because of this transaction, you can easily enjoy some of the worlds’ most beautiful beaches that offer the perfect vacation destination.

The influence of the Danish is still evident in St. Croix, with the major cities being Frederiksted and Christiansted. While Christiansted offers charming o ld Danish architecture, cobblestone

walks and pastel colored buildings in the square, Frederiksted although retaining its historic charm welcomes cruise ships, has the only casino in the Virgin Islands and a botanical gardens, and the Cruzan Rum Distillery.

Two-thirds of St. John is a national park. The town of Cruz Bay, where you disembark the ferry, is really the only actual town on this exotic island. offering hiking and camping and breath-taking spectacular views, this island is well worth the trip for nature lovers and those who enjoy the quiet pace

St. Thomas offers downtown Charlotte Amalie with elegant dining, exciting nightlife, duty-free shopping and even submarine rides. Though it's full of energy, especially in Charlotte Amalie, this island also possesses numerous sublime natural splendors, such as stunning views of the Caribbean from 1,500 feet above sea level.

Based on your preferences, there’s plenty to do! If you’d like a bit of history, take in the Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins on St John’s or the Whim Plantation Museum on St. Croix. This is the oldest sugar plantation museum in the Virgin Islands, set on 12 acres complete with ruins and the restored windmill.

If connecting with nature is more your desire, stay at an eco-friendly hotel such as Caneel Bay Resort on St. Johns which is actually nestled in the National Park or go hiking or horseback riding! St. Thomas offers the St. Peter Greathouse and Botanical Gardens and St. Croix hosts the St. George Botanical Garden.

Snorkeling is popular with an “underwater nature trail” along the Trunk Bay coast. The water is amazing. This is a diver’s paradise with dive shops, snorkeling cruises and visibility averaging 60 to 100 feet. Swimming with schools of fish, turtles, wrecks and reefs will be an unforgettable experience. Historic Maplewood is one of those places you think you know and then you go back for a visit and see there is something new and then something new again and again. That is because in the last few years there has been a real growth in the development of shops along Manchester and Sutton, especially in the food industry and especially among artisan food purveyors.

Many people know the award-winning Kakao Chocolate shop, which opened its second location in Maplewood in 2011. Also for the foodie, one will find Penzeys and Vom Fass, but recently other shops have popped up and soon there will be more. Added to the mix over the past year are Pie oh My! and Traveling Tea. Both stores are owner-operated and developed a following by selling at farmers markets and local events before opening a brick and mortar stores. on the horizon, Maplewood will soon have a

Having sampled their donuts publicly at The Post Sports Bar, The Maplewood Coffee Crawl and The Taste of Maplewood, they have built a

Wednesdays are Schlafly Farmers Market days and among the shoppers, one will find a chef, or two, who has walked over from their kitchen to find ingredients for their menu offerings. often times, a mid-week meal has ingredients that just a few hours ago were sold at the farmers market down the street. This translates into fresh, creative and delicious for you.

Collaboration is a strong driving

force found in the Maplewood business community. one will find Vom Fass vinegars in Home Wine Kitchen’s salad dressing and as flavoring in several of Kakao Chocolate’s truffles. Maven, a boutique specializing in handmade soaps, lotions and skin care products, has a line of chocolate lip balms and body scrubs infused with Kakao Chocolates. Schlafly Beer products are also used in various recipes from pie to chocolate confections. The collaboration expands into events such as cooking classes and tasting parties. All of this means a more diverse offering of quality products and activities and lends to the vibrant momentum of Maplewood’s historic downtown.

This might sound a bit scary: 1,000 wired people all within the confines of an historic district, but it is a perfect example of how small businesses bring a community together. No, it wasn’t some sort of Sci-Fi invasion, it was the 4th Annual Maplewood Coffee Crawl held in April in Historic Downtown Maplewood. This is where the collaboration of businesses and the focus on supporting them plays a key role.

The Maplewood Coffee Crawl is important because it highlights a regional industry that is making a comeback of sorts: the local coffee roaster. Historically, coffee roasting was a big business in St. Louis dating back to the pioneer days and the need for supplies as travelers passed through the “Gateway to the West”. once home to 75 coffee roasting plants, the

St. Louis region now has 18. While the numbers have dwindled over the years the positive side to this shift is the growth of the micro-roaster, bringing more unique blends and higher quality roasts to our region. Maplewood businesses collaborate with 8 roasters; 2 of them are Maplewood-based, Art House Coffees and the soon to be open, La Coshecha Coffee. The Maplewood Coffee Crawl made its debut in the spring of 2010 and attracted 300 people. The inaugural event included 5 local businesses as hosts with 3 local coffee roasters and, if coffee is not your cup of tea, 1 resident tea purveyor. The 4th annual 2013 event boasted 12 local businesses as hosts, 8 local coffee roasters and 2 resident tea purveyors. The number of guests has increased

to more than 3 times the original event to 1,000 people.

This event is the St. Louis region’s first and only walkable coffee roast and taste celebration. It began by inviting the local coffee purveyors who work with the shops and restaurants in the downtown Maplewood area to come and show off their techniques and coffee brews for the day. The roasters, not unlike show dogs, have a lot of tricks up their sleeves and demonstrate the best way to make a cup of coffee from French Press to percolating.

The Maplewood Coffee Crawl is about local food culture as much as it is about coffee. While celebrating coffee is the umbrella theme of this event, the focus on the artisan shop owners and independent businesses is also a highlight of the day. Guests were given the opportunity to meet the business owners and along with the coffee, they could sample each store’s fare, which included hand-made chocolates, breads, donuts, pies, muffins and breakfast treats. All of the items served were made in Maplewood and many were baked fresh by the individuals serving

them at the event, adding a true richness to the day as the passion the roasters and food purveyors possess for their trade is unrivaled. Guests leave feeling sated, not just from eating and drinking, but from the connection they have made and what they have learned. Maplewood offers many opportunities to visit if you are looking for fun events. March blows in like a lioness with Women Making History, a celebration of Maplewood’s women business owners. April is the Maplewood Coffee Crawl. May brings the Maplewood Chamber’s Taste of Maplewood. Tradition plays a big part in his life. His parents, Sicilian born Benedetto and Rosalia (Lia) Buzzetta, opened Benedetto's Ristorante in Des Peres over 30 years ago. (Benedetto’s later moved to the Le Chateau Village in Frontenac.) Son Paul learned the restaurant business at a young age. He remembers how his Sicilian grandmother, Nonna Elena, stressed the most important foundation of Italian cooking - keep it simple and let the food speak for itself. Justly proud of his family’s heritage, that message has inspired him all through his life Today, Sapore combines the past and future. Buzzetta said, “We are still a family operated business as my parents are retired, but they continue to help out in the kitchen. I’m extremely lucky to work along with them making Sapore truly a family affair. My sister occasionally comes in to help and my wife, Brandi, works as our marketing rep. We really care - all of us put our hearts and souls into Sapore.” (Paul and Brandi have been married for twelve

years and have two sons.) “Friends from Benedetto’s old days continue to drop by to dine. It’s like a reunion. They remember me as a little boy!”

The menu offers a simpler fare like grilled steaks to more interesting dishes in classic Italian style. Favorites include Chicken Sicilian, Veal Piccata and Tilapia. Buzzetta said, “I’m definitely a hands-on chef where I personally cut all my own filets, fish and chops. We use only the best ingredients - buying produce fresh daily from local farmers.” Along with antipasti, salads, soups, fantastic steaks, chicken, veal, and pasta dishes, nightly specials always include fresh fish. Dinner favorites include Chilean sea bass, snapper and sea scallops – it typically depends on the market. “We offer small amounts of fresh seafood daily. When it’s gone, it’s gone. That’s how we keep our inventory fresh.”

Sapore’s new home in Kirkwood’s Woodbine Center opened in November 2012. “After four years in our Manchester location, we relocated to Kirkwood for

additional space,” said Buzzetta. “I fell in love with the patio, the second floor, the outside fountain, and the banquet facility. This space just allows for more options - patio seating, cocktails at the bar, and private functions.”

The restaurant’s interior is a blend of classy and casual, definitely not stuffy. High ceilings, a granite counter top bar, wood floors, combined with accents of black and wrought iron add just the right touches of elegance. o utside is lovely as well. “o ur elevated patio is great. The fountain, umbrellas, and wrought iron fence make it really one of the nicest patios around. It’s perfect for al fresco dining,” said Buzzetta. (Patio tables may be reserved.)

Summertime makes me nostalgic! I reminisce about my childhood playing hide and seek outdoors – our tree was always home base. We’d play hopscotch and jump rope until the sun set, and then finish off our evening catching fireflies. In the midst of all the fun and laughter suddenly we’d hear the sound of music rolling down the street.

“The Ice Cream Man, The Ice Cream Man,” everyone would scream, running to get change from their parents for a treat.

Growing up, my neighborhood had Mr. Softie and The Ice Cream Man. There were three girls in my family, we each had our favorites. My oldest sister loved shoestring potatoes, hot from Mr. Softie’s oven. My middle sister loved Banana Bomb Pops, I liked those as well, but my favorite was the Dreamsicle – vanilla ice cream swirled with orange sherbet. You might recall these as a Creamsicle or Push Up – they were heavenly!

I dream of Dreamsicles this time of year, so decided to make my own. If you’re nostalgic as well, try this recipe – it will take you back to the good ole days when ice cream bars were 25 cents, Bazooka Bubble Gum was 2 for a penny, and a burger, fries and Coke cost 37 cents. Those were the days!

Prepare in Push Pop containers, small paper cups inserted with Popsicle sticks, or simply scooped into a bowl. This recipe is so simple and delicious; you’ll keep some in your freezer all summer long.

1 cup water

1 cup sugar

Juice from 2 large oranges

zest from 2 large oranges

2 ½ cups buttermilk

1 tbsp. orange extract

direCtions:

1. combine water, sugar, orange juice, zest, and extract in a small saucepan. gently bring mixture to a boil.

2. allow to boil for 1 minute until sugar has dissolved, then remove from heat to cool completely.

3. add buttermilk and stir to combine. cover and place in refrigerator for about 2 hours to chill.

4. place chilled mixture in an ice-cream machine following manufacturer’s instructions. if you don’t have an ice-cream machine do one of the following, by pouring the mixture into:

• push pop containers

• small paper cups topped with foil, then insert popsicle stick through foil to hold in place

• place in a large plastic container with lid place in freezer until frozen. serve.

note:

orange extract contains alcohol which keeps the ice-cream from freezing solid. if preferred, substitute with an orange liqueur like grand Marnier.

Elsie Parker, with her group t H e P oor P eo P le of P A ris , is well known in our town for fantastic renditions of French popular music as well as all eras of French jazz from the 20's to the present.

There’s no need to speak French in order to enjoy a PPoP concert. Parker prefaces each piece with a short translation and applies her unique body language to get the songs' messages across. PPoP musicians complement her charming stage presence perfectly. Band members include Ken Kehner (piano), Michael Carosello (keyboard), Wayne Coniglio (bass), Ron Carr, (drums) and Alan Schilling (drums & percussion). Besides performing original music created by Parker herself, PPoP performs French classics of Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brel, Charles Trenet and others. Parker's instrumental playing is influenced by works of French film music composers like Michel Legrand, and the Latin rythyms of Argentinian tenor saxophonist/composer Gato Barbieri. PPoP has recorded four CDs.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Parker was raised in southwestern New Mexico. Her musical talents appeared early. “I listened to symphonic recordings as a child and knew I wanted to play an instrument – either the oboe or cello. None were available in the school music program, so I wound up playing an alto clarinet.”

on full scholarship, Parker received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from New Mexico State University. “I never intended to teach, but was advised to get an education degree because it involved the same training as a music performance degree. Parker attained an MA in Clarinet Performance from The University of Iowa.

Parker spent six months in Europe, studying clarinet in major orchestras of Munich, Helsinki and Amsterdam.

After moving to St. Louis, Parker played in The St. Louis Philharmonic and became an extra player in the St. Louis Symphony orchestra. In the 1980s she played clarinet and tenor saxophone with The St. Louis German Band. “I’d sing Marlene Dietrich’s version of La Vie en Rose.” Later she became enchanted with the song’s original version by Edith Piaf. “Her voice struck me, and she sang in my range!”

In the early 90’s she formed a duo performing at area festivals. “I picked the recognizable name of Piaf’s "The Poor People of Paris.” Fascinated by classic French singers, she gradually added them to her repertoire.

Multi-talented Elsie Parker performs on clarinet, bass clarinet, piccolo, flute, alto flute, tenor, alto and soprano sax. “I need all of these wind instruments for playing theater music.” Parker is a tenured member of the MUNY orchestra, plays woodwinds at the FoX (Anything Goes in late May) and the REP (Cabaret in September/ october). Parker is an extra clarinet player with the St. Louis Symphony. She also plays clarinet in The Crusell Quartet, which has a CD "Elm" out on Centaur Records.

Parker has been vocal soloist for symphony pops concerts at Powell Hall, the Jacksonville Symphony and Chesterfield West County YMCA orchestra. PPoP has performed at The Missouri Botanical Gardens Whittaker Concert Series, The Sheldon, Missouri History Museum, St. Louis First Night and Powell Hall.

Parker’s most memorable performances to date have included "Piaf's" in San Francisco, and with symphony orchestras in Illinois and Florida. Parker was featured on the popular French TV program, "La Chance Aux Chansons"(The Luck of Songs), filmed in Paris and viewed throughout France. “Another unforgettable event occurred when Mikhail Baryshnikov was in the audience at Brandt's Café on Delmar. He actually listened to our music, gave a generous tip, and even winked at me as he left.”

hat’s old is new at The Refind Room. But what’s new (Gringo) was once old as in Rothschilds. And what’s new is new too as in The FitShop. Confused? Read on. The one thing I know is, the only constant is change.

The Refind Room, (2525 S Brentwood Blvd, Brentwood, 314-962-7666, therefindroom. com) is much more than what the name implies. Yes, the pieces, for the most part, are previously owned but they are of the highest caliber and not what you may typically anticipate at a store of this nature. o wner, Suzanne Woodward, attorney turned design enthusiast, shares her love for interior design by offering a wide selection of items that will make your house a home all at an affordable price. The Refind Room does not take items on consignment but will certainly work with you to acquire your collection or individual piece. And, another anomaly, they even allow returns! (within policy limits).

Any style is findable here from mid-century Danish modern to country chic to contemporary to old west. Her ability to mix and mingle elements is inspiring and on constant display with her continually updated photos as well as her blog. You’ll leave there knowing exactly how to incorporate your new purchases with your existing, unique pieces and end up with a fabulously eclectic yet cohesive room.

Alas, time moves on. Rothschild’s Antiques, home of the best windowshopping in town, has closed its doors and there’s a new kid in town. Perhaps wisely, so no comparisons may ever be drawn, the new inhabitant is a tacos and tequila trattoria called gringo (398 N. Euclid, CWE, 314-449-1212, gringo-stl.com). Tacos are hand-made and filled with your normal fixin’s, or venture into new territories and try it stuffed with octopus, tofu, or even grasshoppers - yes, grasshoppers - but they are sauteed. They have a decent selection of craft beers and a truly impresive menu of tequilas. Time marches on but enough tequila will always fix that problem.

And now, what’s needed is new. At last, a fitness clothing and accessories store truly for both women AND men has come to town. FitShop, (14430 Clayton Rd, Ballwin, 636-2209227, fitshopstl.com) features a broad range of brands for the active lifestyle like MPG for men, several lines of yoga wear, and many options to take you easily from the gym to the grocery store in style. FitShop carries some brands, like 360 Sweater, that are often hard to find if you’re not on one coast or the other. Many of their lines emphasize the highest quality natural and/or organic materials. FitShop also carries watches, shoes, sticky socks, jewelry and scarves. The store itself is beautiful and is definitely a destination-worthy trip if you’re not typically out that way.

Just when you thought you’d had enough time travel, take yourself back to any of the incarnations of Busch’s grove; private cabanas out back, fine dining, or neighborhood market. Whatever your memory, it’s going to be recreated once again. The latest plans are to create an indoor shopping mall to make use of the venerable location. If this feels unnerving to you, remember, the sure things in life - death, taxes and change. ut
