A NECESSARY LUXURY

o ahead and schedule that massage you’ve been contemplating without feeling guilty. As it turns out, an indulgent massage not only feels ahh-mazing; it can also be a key component to a healthy lifestyle.

That pressing, rubbing, and manipulating of your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments can help relieve stress, pain, and muscle tension. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies have indicated that massage can, in fact, help alleviate numerous medical conditions when used in conjunction with regular medical care. Conditions such as Anxiety, Fibromyalgia, headaches, insomnia, chronic nerve pain, and strains or injuries of the soft tissue may improve with regular massage therapy. According to the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota, massage helps to activate the body’s “relaxation response” which occurs when caring and safe human touch is coupled with pain relief. When this involuntary response is activated, the body goes through several changes. Heart rate and breathing slows, and blood pressure drops. Stress hormones taper off and available Serotonin levels may increase. Serotonin is a chemical in the body that helps improve emotions and thoughts.

Several physical changes occur as well during and after a massage, most notably increased blood and lymph circulation. When muscles are inflamed or adhesions (muscular “knots”) are present, essential vitamins and nutrients may not circulate throughout the body as efficiently. Increased circulation can enhance the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscle cells. When cellular health improves, tissues function more efficiently, which leads to the removal of waste products and can help increase the absorption of excess fluids to reduce swelling.

The Designing Block is a delightful destination filled with unique and colorful treasures. The boutique’s two floors overflow with quality items. It’s an eclectic atmosphere with bits of whimsy(big fat pigs) tucked here and there amongst beautiful furniture, lamps, jewelry and other fine décor. They carry the line of Amy Howard at Home Paints for the do it yourselfer. “You never know what we will have” said owner Susan Block. Block opened her store in 1996 and it continues to showcase her imaginative talents. “Art and design have always been part of my life.” A St. Louis native, Block holds a degree in Fines Arts from Washington University. Her design philosophy - “expect the unexpected and make it work.”

For the last five years, Block and Sue Callahan have worked together. Callahan said, “Susan and I work as a team on nearly all of our jobs. It's always good to have another trained eye.” Callahan was born in Grosse Pointe MI and holds a BFA from Stephens College. Like Block, she too had a knack for design. “I believe you’re born with it. Growing up, I was always rearranging our family furniture. One sofa came with four sets of slipcovers, for each season. I was in heaven!” Her favorite style includes just about everything. “Don't be afraid to make your home yours rather than a picture out of a catalogue!”

THE HASSING HOUSE:

A Webster Groves Treasure!

When approaching the gabled Victorian Vernacular style home of Martin Hassing in Webster Groves, you might mistakenly believe that you are about to enter yet another formidable, old-fangled vintage home with furnishings and décor that cling to the almost forgotten past. After all, a gold historical marker is embedded in the sidewalk and the Century Home sign is posted by the front door. However, this house is owned by the ever industrious, high-powered, innovative Marty Hassing, who is not so conventional! Each room reflects his love of travel, his business, beauty, creativity, and his multi-faceted interests and his fun personality. The ambiance is a wonderful combination of a modern manor and a museum with a bit of fun house added in the mix. Collections of art, scientific specimens, a display of watches, an exhibit of cigarette lighters in addition to the careful placing of antique furniture affirm his eclectic tastes and his interests.

Owner and President of Summit Jewelers on Big Bend in Webster, Martin has been creating, appraising and repairing jewelry for 40 years. His expertise has led him to teach workshops at Southern Illinois University and Fontbonne. He is very dedicated to his work and even has a comprehensive jewelry work bench in a hideaway in his office. His intricate attention to detail and his ability to work so well with his hands, his drive and willingness to take on any project has turned his home into a stunning, unpredictable, attractive home.

The history of the house is interesting. According to Marty, George Washington Sanders of the Sanders Duck and Rubber Company was the original owner and built the house in in a different location in Webster Groves in 1867. The house was actually moved in the 1920’s. An addition was made then and again in the 1970s when the pool was also added. Sanders made his fortune by having a monopoly on rubber slickers which were wagon covers for all those folks going out West.

ago. Immediately, rooms were gutted, 30 windows were installed, walls torn down, walls were built, ceilings were ripped out and replaced and new plumbing and hardwood floors were meticulously laid. The truly amazing fact about all this renovation is that Marty did most of the work himself. He freely admits he had help on the beautiful hard wood flooring and mosaic tile in the bathroom. There are 9 rooms in the house including the 3 bedrooms upstairs in the 3,500 square footage home.

The parlor is your first introduction to fun! An old stove pipe heater stands next to a breathtaking intricately designed antique cabinet. A sitting area sits delicately in front of the bay window and the wall nearby holds a magnificent, massive watch collection.

As Martin travels Asia and South America while selecting gemstones, and pearls for his business, mementos and relics from India, Thailand and Brazil are found throughout the house. He has made over 100 trips abroad. The dining room is done in red accents which brings a hint of the Orient to the room. An impressive wood-carved chandelier with individual shades lights

the room. On a nearby table sit carefully situated little figurines on Asian shelving and above is a wood carving of elephants.

The bottom shelf of the table has elephant statues and showcased in the middle of the table is a picture of Vicki and Marty riding an elephant themselves!

The office is one that even Indiana Jones would envy! A myriad of diverse collections line the walls with artifacts and curiosities. An impressive display of arrowheads from his grandfather contains a special one which was found in Missouri and is so old that it was most likely used to kill mastodons! An insect collection exhibited on another wall features a creature almost half as long as my arm! The hat tree holds several hats (one of them suspiciously like Indy’s) as well as two stringed Asian puppets. Midst the Asian themes, the USA is not forgotten. A Native American rug drapes over one of his chairs and in the top center of the wall cabinet is Rocky, a taxidermic raccoon rowing a canoe! This is my favorite room. From Marty’s desk, he can look out the bay window which overlooks his pool and watch television while he does

paperwork. Off the room is the aforementioned almost-hidden work room containing his jewelry bench. He also built a small private bathroom behind one of the doors in the office!

A good businessman, Marty finds bargains. The kitchen is contemporary, efficient and beautiful. He bought a refrigerator at a local not-for-profit which was many hundreds of dollars less than if bought commercially. In order to fit the piece in the style of his kitchen, he covered it in chalkboard, which brings “leaving messages on the refrigerator” to a whole new level.

Upstairs, the bathroom is a work in progress. Bedrooms, which were two are now one, with Marty knocking down walls, building closets, redoing the ceilings, reinsulating and revamping the air-conditioning.

A great story about one of Vicki and Marty’s purchases is one he told about buying a cabinet for $150 at a garage sale. There were two secret panels which were empty. Once home and working on it, he found a hidden shelf. Stuffed in the shelf was an old Famous & Barr envelope with 6 $100 bills in it! He even finds treasures like Indiana Jones!

The biggest surprise was the trip to the basement where we met Monique, a 100 year old skeleton of a French woman which was in a doctor’s office and bought at an estate sale!

The couple works together on the house and have plans to continue renovating. Plans are already made to rearrange the outside, moving the gazebo, adding decks, planting and gardening. Already, they have 20-30 different kinds of orchids throughout their home and property.

Vicki and Marty share many of the same interests. They met 13 years ago through a friend. Each have daughters and grandchildren and are very family oriented. Martin’s energetic drive is an inherited trait. His father lives next door and helps with projects and even helps cook! Vicki sells antiques and also sells sterling silver jewelry at incredible prices! She holds Jewelry Happy Hours at the house which is the perfect combination of cocktails, appetizers and jewelry!” Completing the family are Buddy, the Golden Retriever and BB, the mix, aptly named because one eye is blue and the other is brown!

The house is intriguing and fun, full of master-crafted detail and built with care and talent. From the honed ceilings to the hand-made bar in the family room with two refrigerators, each feature is a conversation piece. The historical Hassing House is a wonderful treasure in Webster Groves! UT

I had taken some art history and other art classes during my college years. I even became somewhat of a painter myself. So later, it was only natural for me to work in our gallery,” said Tomsich. (Otto Tomsich died in 2012.)

Over the years, Tomsich learned the techniques of art restoration – cleaning and repairing. The gallery also offers exceptional quality framing. “We’re noted for our hand carved 22 karat gold leafed frames.” Other services include appraisals. “Like the Antiques Roadshow, we do free verbal appraisals for clients who want to determine evaluations of their own pieces and possibly sell them.”

Another exciting venue to view and buy fine art is in the new Link Auction Galleries. The company takes its name from Union Station architect Theodore Link, who also designed the gallery’s circa 1901 building in the Central West End (originally St. John’s United Methodist Church).

After its grand opening in June, Link Auction Galleries is now doing business as a full service auction house.

President Susan Kime heads up the Link team of experienced specialists in the St. Louis auction industry.

Kime said, “We present fine arts, antiques, silver, decorative art, collectibles, oriental rugs, jewelry, and other fine goods. The public is always welcome to browse the gallery during business hours, and we offer free verbal appraisals as well.”

Kime herself has been a fine art appraiser working in the Saint Louis auction industry for twenty years. Since 2011, she’s appeared regularly as an appraiser for the PBS Antiques Roadshow.

Link’s auction preview will take place July 6-10 and the inaugural auction on July 12-13. “Everyone is invited to come in and browse our previews. Besides a vast variety of items, we will be focusing largely on early 20th century regional art by St. Louis artists – for which our historic building is a very appropriate showcase.”

Link will hold at least six internationally advertised auctions per year. The gallery will also hold regular monthly estate auctions beginning in July.

On August 2nd, the gallery will present the first of what’s called a Link Bazaar “We’ll hold it once every month. It will be a more casual event and offer more decorative objects. We want to make the auction experience a fun and easy process for everyone.”

In 2003 the Philip Slein Gallery was opened on Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis by co-owners Philip Slein and Tom Bussmann who share a wide range of interests centering on painting, and are committed to showing the best work regardless of style. The gallery moved to its current Central West End location in 2012.

The gallery presents some modern works, but emphasis is mainly on the contemporary artists of today, 1970-s to the present. Owner Philip Slein said, “We have one of the largest inventories in the area. Besides pieces on display, we have hundreds more.”

The public is always welcome to come in and browse. “I feel our gallery is a nurturing mechanism for both artists and collectors. We want to cultivate collectors of all ages – to encourage them to see what’s out there and possibly purchase. We offer something for everyone’s price point.”

The gallery presents 6 to 7 exhibitions a year. “This summer we have three shows going at one time – in the main gallery, there’s a group of abstract artists. The smaller galleries are showing Brandon Anschultz and Arthur Osver.”

Slein himself is a noted artist, although he doesn’t display his work in the gallery. “I enjoy painting what I call satirical portraits of St. Louis movers and shakers. Mind you, they’re never mean spirited, but done with love, a bit of teasing and good humor.” His subjects do seem to enjoy being Sleined.

The gallery is minimalistic – stark, except for the large colorful artwork lining the walls. In contrast, Slein’s loft home is an eclectic paradise. He is an avid collector of almost everything and it shows. His residence is full of favorite things each telling a story. He holds a fascination for antiques, clocks, metal and neon signs, taxidermy, and even steam engine memorabilia.

Slein's artistic talent began in nursery school at Temple Israel in Creve Coeur. He was 5 years old, wearing a little smock and painting a canvas all red. When the teacher tried to tell him to paint an image, he quickly “No, I'm an artist!”

Denver is only a twelve and half hour drive and New Orleans is a mere ten hour ride away! Another greatly under-appreciated fact is that we are a short five and half hour drive (a fifty minute flight) to the third largest city in the United States, exciting, vibrant Chicago! Yes, St. Louis, there is so much more to Chicago than the Cubs and although the games are a great draw, the city itself has much to offer!

We think of the Loop, the Magnificent Mile, Sears Tower and Lakeshore Drive, the Art Museum, Shedd Aquarium and the Science and History Museum but no matter what your interests, Chicago has something for you. The list is endless.

World renown restaurants are everywhere mixed with local historical hangouts, each with unique specialties and ethnic foods which is heaven for any “foodie”. Bars, distilleries and breweries are plentiful for thirsty nightlife adventurers and, of course, night clubs.

Along with the History museums, cultural churches and centers appear throughout the city such as the oldest African American Museum. Swedish, Ukrainian, American Indian German, Irish American, Italian, Polish and Hispanic among others are brimming with information, artifacts, art and tributes to our American ancestry. Architecture aficionados will love the “Wright Around Chicago“ tour which highlights the work and the life of Frank Lloyd Wright who spent 20 years in the town in his early career.

For the scientific minded, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum are just a few of the options. For the artist, galleries are located throughout the city and the Art Institute is right there on South Michigan Avenue where you can find my personal favorite, the impressive inspirational Seurat’s “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte”.

Brookfield Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, the Botanical Garden and Garfield Park are wonderful walks and should not be missed. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum has a greenhouse for a thousand butterflies of 75 different species.

The Pritzker Military Museum & Library will appeal to the military folk along with Soldiers’ Field (also home of the Chicago Bears) and the Navy Pier (which includes a giant Ferris Wheel, rides, a Children’s Museum, restaurants and shops).

Large and small theater companies are all throughout the city. This is the home of the Goodman Theater, Steppenwolf and Second City which is the wellspring of many Saturday Night Live performers. Chicago is a mecca for dance companies as well, such as the Harris Theater for Music and

Dance and the Joffrey Ballet. Chicago's shopping is ever changing. The historic Marshal Fields on State Street in the Loop was bought by Macy’s in 2006, but Macy’s did keep the integrity of the building and the unique architecture. The Chicago Loop is still a great shopping district but you don’t want to miss the more uptown, upscale Water Tower further north. Don’t forget the fun shopping! Check out the street markets and cultural festivals and local ethnic boutiques and food stores in neighborhoods like Chinatown, Greektown and Little Italy. Take in and appreciate the buildings, signs, groceries, restaurants, places of worship and shops. South Asian, Mexican, and Polish districts are all worth the adventure!

Remember, Chicago is attainable by air with Southwest to Midway Airport or American, United and Delta into Chicago O’Hare. You can take a train or cab into the city. Take Amtrak! If you plan ahead, the fares are incredible as low as $27 one way The Megabus goes directly to downtown with equally low fares and the ride is only about 5 ½ hours long.

Hints: Find a hotel that has free or inexpensive parking unless that is not a worry for you. Public transportation is accessible and easy. The Regional Transportation Authority has a web site that helps you find your way using the Pace buses, Chicago Transit Authority trains or the Metra North Central Service Line that connects downtown to the northern suburbs. http://www.rtachicago.com/

Go for a long weekend! You can do it. Years ago, I surprised my children on Christmas Day by handing them airline tickets to Chicago for the very next morning. Their first real plane ride, a stay at the old Holiday Inn on Lakeshore Drive and visits to a couple of main attractions later, we walked along the city streets at night, looking at Christmas windows and simply being together. Truly one of the best memories ever! You can do it.

Fresh fruit tarts have always captured my attention at the bakeries. I admired them for years wondering if I could ever duplicate them. Each layer and row of fruit placed to perfection, glistening as the light shines upon it. To create stunning, colorful tarts, certainly hours of work must be devoted to them – think again!

Well, maybe some take hours, but I have a recipe that’s sure to fool anyone who lays eyes on my fresh fruit tart. To taste – light and refreshing, with creamy, sweet goodness inside. I came up with the idea for my tart from a simple dip I’ve been making for years, and used it for the filling. Prepare a homemade pie crust or ready-made Pillsbury crust that you roll out. Don’t feel skilled for even that? Then purchase a frozen pie crust (large or mini shells) and bake, then fill. You’ll see this recipe is as easy as 1-2-3. While the filling may be sweet, adding fresh fruits in the colors of the rainbow is the sign of a healthy, vitamin and nutrient-rich dish! Purple, blue, red, and orange are considered to be the most antioxidant-rich foods. In general, the deeper the color pigment, the more densely packed with nutrients the food is. No need to feel guilty enjoying this dessert - it provides some health benefits too!

I prefer decorating my tart with fresh slices of kiwi, blueberries, and raspberries, but feel free to select your favorites.

For best results, prepare tart one day ahead or 4-6 hours before serving. Trust me when I say this is easy! In fact, I hope you’ll send me a photo of your creation when it’s completed.

Enjoy!!!

Filling:

• 8 oz. package light cream cheese

• 1 (7 oz.) jar Marshmallow Crème

Topping:

• 1 (6 oz.) container Blueberries

• 1 (6 oz.) container Raspberries

• 3 Kiwi, peeled, halved lengthwise and sliced

• Apple jelly

DIRECTIONS:

1. Crust – Roll out dough to fit bottom and sides of an ungreased 10” tart pan, trimming any edges that hang over the top. Prick bottom and sides with a fork. Bake in preheated 400F degree oven for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and cool.

2. Filling – Blend cream cheese and marshmallow cream until smooth. Spread over pie shell.

3. Topping – Lay sliced kiwi on the filling, around the circumference of the pie while overlapping the slices. Then place a row or two of raspberries next to the kiwi around the pie. Top with the remaining space left in the center of the pie with the blueberries.

4. Take 1 teaspoon of Apple Jelly and heat in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds. Remove, stir and add a touch of water to thin the jelly. With a pastry brush, gently dab a thin layer of the jelly over the fruit to create a glaze. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Jeanne Trevor has been performing on the St. Louis jazz scene since the early '60s and is still going strong. St. Louis’ “First Lady of Jazz” explained her title. “Famed jazz singer Clea Bradford was actually the first, but she graciously bestowed that title on me when she departed St. Louis.”

Trevor’s style is truly unique. She’s a professional who’s at ease with every music genre, having the ability to belt out or croon most any melody. The versatile Trevor commented, "But I’m not strictly a jazz singer. I actually prefer being called a modern American singer." Her upbeat personality shines through a repertoire which includes jazz, cabaret, gospel, Latin and The American Music Song Book. Trevor’s influences include Dinah Washington, Nancy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Her vocal range is unbounded, as she uses a maneuver called swooping, a rapid sliding up or down the musical scale, which gives extra meaning to lyrics.

Trevor was born and raised in Harlem, New York, where her family would often attend performances at the historical Apollo Theater. It was at that time she caught the performing bug. “My father was both a musician and singer, so I most likely inherited the performer gene from him.” Trevor went on to train her voice in the classics. “I always wanted to be an opera singer, but back in those days, that dream was a long trek from Harlem."

began performing with the St. Louis Jazz Quartet, and later toured with them to Africa, Australia, Italy and Alaska. Since then she’s appeared in numerous St. Louis cabarets and jazz festivals. Through the years, Trevor shared the stage with both local artists and nationally famous groups as well. These include The 5th Dimension, the St. Louis Symphony, Webster College Symphony, plus other symphony orchestras around the country.

From 1986 to 2011, Trevor joined the casts of the MUNY, Theatre Factory and Imaginary Theatre Company. She acted and sang in The Wiz at The Black Repertory Theater, The Music Man at Stages St. Louis, South Pacific at Westport Playhouse, and The Rosa Parks Story at The History Museum. Trevor also received a 1980 Grammy for her work on local TV commercials.

Her family eventually headed to California where Trevor studied drama at L.A. City College. She acted in L.A. and San Francisco theater productions, including Lost In The Stars and in 1960 appeared in a 20th Century Fox Western entitled Oregon Trail.

In the 1960’s, Trevor relocated to St. Louis, to begin singing at Gaslight Square’s Black Horse, where she soon became a favorite; her amazing career had begun. ( Note: photographs of Trevor in her Gaslight days were recently featured in St. Louis Magazine’s May and June issues.)

She has recorded several albums and three CDs, including 1998’s Love You Madly. Trevor’s recent guest appearances include Jazz at the Bistro, The Sheldon, various church concerts, and private events. Today Trevor performs with Jubilee Jazz for Springboard, St. Louis’ largest provider of in-school arts and enrichment programs for young audiences.

The forever young Trevor remarked on her long successful career, “After all these years, yes, it’s been fun, fun, fun! I thank God for all his blessings.”
