BE A HAPPIER YOU WITH
youngerlookingskin
BY LINDA SPALL
Much to my chagrin, I never paid much attention to my skin. Now I am finding wrinkles, brown spots and weird crevasses on my face that seem unexplainable. I wasn’t prepared for this! Is it ever too late to work on younger looking skin? No. You can take steps at any age, but keep in mind that by the time you are in your twenties, your body begins reflecting your life style so live clean as early as you can! Here are some facts, helpful hints and useful information to help your skin look and feel just right.
Don’t sleep with dirt and makeup and bacteria on your body that clog your pores. Use a gentle face wash or cleanser instead of soap.
Where you live has an effect on your skin. We live in humidity. My Grandmother and mother both had beautiful soft skin and lived in humid St. Louis while my equally attractive Colorado relatives living in higher dry altitude and stronger sun had to fight dry skin. Of course, it depends on your skin type which climate is good for you. People with dry skin or eczema do better in humid climates as the skin retains moisture. Those days of feeling like we are walking through ice cold water all work to our advantage. Oily skin folks in a dry climate don’t break out as much and may even have to use a moisturizer! Since heat and ultraviolet waves cause blood vessels to dilate, rosacea sufferers should stay away from sunny climates. But bottom line, it’s not just climate that affects the skin, smog and pollution take a toll as well. Get a humidifier no matter what your skin type. A humidifier balances the air and you can set it according to your skin type.
Wash your face every night before you go to bed. Don’t sleep with dirt and makeup and bacteria on your body that clog your pores. Use a gentle face wash or cleanser instead of soap.
Avoid using skin care products that have alcohol as an ingredient. I know ladies who use hand sanitizers which contain alcohol. Their hands are similar to my cactus garden. Wear gloves in the winter!
Avoid prolonged contact with hot or chlorinated water. Use lukewarm water
Use sunscreen (SPF 30) I swear I see changes in my skin where I had a sunburn when I was 14 years old.
Don’t smoke. Those little lines around your mouth make you look very angry or ill-humored as you age. Smoking also causes loose skin under your eyes. Many of the 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke mess with the collagen and elastin giving you saggy skin and pronounced wrinkles.
Be happy! Eliminate Stress! Too much anxiety can break down collagen. As Grandma used to say, “Get that frown off your face or it might stay there!” She was right. Deep breathe. You can tell when someone is happy by just looking at them. Be one of those people. Repetitive actions stay on your face! Those lines around your lips and the furrows that go from your nose to the corners of your mouth need to move so make them look happy as possible!
Use a retinoid. A retinoid is a group of compounds having effects in the body like those
of vitamin A. The ingredient called retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. Retinoid and Retinol are used in anti-aging creams and help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and fade brown spots.
Eat omega-3s! Salmon, flaxseed, and almonds all help hydration.
Exercise! Moving gives you oxygen and firmer skin! Exercise infuses skin with oxygen and nutrients needed for collagen production.
Green tea has stress relief and healing power. Drink it, wear it, splash it on! Green tea is loaded with antiinflammatory compounds and tannins to help reduce puffiness on your skin. Green tea also provides antioxidants to fight against premature aging.
Eat and wear fresh natural ingredients! Fruits and veggies help your skin! You can make your own face masks from fruits and vegetables that are simple to do, natural and will save you money as they are less expensive than commercial anti-aging treatments! Pomegranate seeds, strawberries and cranberries are loaded with anti-aging compounds, such as antioxidants and vitamin C and can help remove dead skin cells! Pumpkin can be made into a mask to help hydrate and soften skin. Honey is great as a facial treatment as it moistens your skin. Greek yogurt contains lactic acid and may help clear blemishes and reduce those tiny little wrinkles. Olive oil can be used directly on your skin! Avocados can also help moisturize the skin and be used as an exfoliating mask.
Make an effort! With the all-knowing internet available at our fingertips, look up some of the many products or natural ways to enhance, protect and heal your skin. No matter what your age, you can begin paying more attention to your skin. You will look better, feel younger and healthier and in turn, be a happier you! UT

SIMPLE WAYS TO
RESTORE YOUR
energy
Feeling exhausted? You are not alone. The vast majority of people would like to feel more energized. If you are among the majority, here are just a few simple changes you can make each day.
BY COURTNEY BROWN
REST UP!
Getting adequate sleep helps the body restore and repair. The problem for many, however, is that sleep is not always easy to come by. Early mornings, a snoring spouse, young children, and an ever-growing to-do list are just a few of the barriers to getting the sound sleep that our bodies need. Contrary to the widely held belief that having a drink will help you fall asleep, alcohol actually inhibits the deeper stages of sleep that are most beneficial for overall health. With the demands of every day life in our fast paced society, obtaining adequate sleep may seem like a distant dream, but there are simple changes that can certainly help you on your way. For one, check your thermostat. A bedroom shouldn’t be too hot or too cold. Uncomfortable temperatures can disrupt sleep . Another obstacle to sound sleep is technology. Television, computers, and handheld devices emit blue light, which can interfere with the Pineal Gland’s ability to produce and release Melatonin, a hormone associated with restful sleep. You can also make your bedroom more conducive to sleep by keeping the lights to a minimum, since bright light can hinder your ability to fall asleep, and to stay asleep.
DRINK MORE WATER!
Dehydration leads to exhaustion, along with countless other symptoms. Make sure that you are sipping water throughout the day. How can you tell if you are drinking enough water? If your urine is pale yellow to straw colored, you are on the right track to avoiding dehydration. Anything darker in color indicates a need to up your intake of fluid, and the preferred fluid is water. Juices, sodas, coffee, and teas frequently contain empty calories from added sugars, and caffeine is a natural diuretic, leading to dehydration.
GET MOVING!
It may seem counterintuitive, but regularly getting enough exercise will help your heart and lungs function at their best, leading to increased overall energy. In this sense, expending energy through exercise will actually give you a boost in energy. Not only will your energy levels benefit from exercise, but also your mood, thanks to increased levels of those feel-good Endorphins.
BE A LITTLE BIT SELFISH!
Set aside time each day to do something that helps you relax, even if you only have 10-15 minutes to spare, take the time to do something that you enjoy. Whether its catching up with a friend, reading a book or a magazine, watching a favorite TV show, or just having a good laugh, making time for you, is just as important as making time for others. Laughter, lighthearted conversation, or just
a few moments set aside each day when you are on no ones agenda but your own, can boost your morale, which ultimately leads to feelings of greater energy and overall wellbeing.
Sleep, sip, stay active, and set aside time for yourself. While there are certainly more ways to restore energy, these are some of the more realistic lifestyle changes that you can make today in order to recharge. UT

HEAVENLY BATH -THE HALO FROM MTI BATHS
Today's baths are designed to be functional, clutter free and stylish. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association's style report, 2015 bathrooms feature a cleaner and more contemporary look. They are sleek, multifunctional, offering relaxation and efficiency as key design elements.
New options include high tech water saving fixtures, usually featured in upscale hotels and spas, and now available to home owners. Water efficient low-flow toilets, sensor-operated faucets, soaking tubs and separate glass shower enclosures with body jets are in demand.
Free standing tubs with deep wells for full-body immersion are also in fashion. Pictured is the new deep soaking tub from MTI Baths called the Halo. Its cup like design requires little floor space, yet offers a full immersion soak. Constructed of solid stone, the Halo is extremely durable and easy to maintain.
Where bathrooms are concerned, today's homeowners want it all. More trendy design extras include towel warmers, radiant heated floors, larger mirrors, built-in audio systems, and designer LED lighting.
For a more luxurious ambience, J. Stephens General Contracting presents a classic bathroom fit for royalty (pictured). It may be antique in style, but it has all the modern amenities. Separate sinks set in antique cabinets
flank an exquisite vanity. The beautiful tub invites pampering. Large windows allow plenty of natural light.
More about double sink vanities - Katie Di Primo of Alspaugh Kitchens & Baths described some of these elements in a warm contemporary bathroom (pictured), where symmetry and seamless details reign. “The floating His and Her vanities (frameless cabinetry in Cherry Espresso) were aligned to mirror each other.”
Bathroom floors and walls featuring geometric patterns in stone or tile appear to be the norm. Di Primo continued, “While using the same travertine tile material for the floor and shower conveys continuity, varying the sizes and patterns provide understated interest. A thin, dark frame surrounds the large vanity mirrors, adding another crisp shape to the very geometric design.”
Besides granite, quartz is the new counter choice for 2015. And in lieu of traditional all-white baths, shades of grey are the fastest-growing color schemes for the bathroom.
Bathroom fixtures manufactured in warm metallic may add a touch of glam. They’re available in a variety of interesting finishes and colors of copper, brass and bronze.
All these beautiful options are certain to create bathrooms full of dreamy serenity. So pamper yourself - light some candles, fill a wine glass, turn on the music, and just soak those cares away! UT

London's
ATTRACTIVE AFFORDABLE ATTRACTIONS!
BY LINDA SPALL
London has 13 million people in the metropolitan area and covers 600 square miles. With the population, any visitor will surely find an abundance of attractions which appeal to his or her special interests. The secret in this expensive city is to sightsee, tour and dine while watching your pence.
London is welcoming and just as St Louis offers free things to do, with a bit of searching, you can find them in jolly old London. The city is a fascinating bouquet of delights whether you love shopping, history, science, theater, scenery, drink, food or gardening! We highly suggest you do preliminary research, make a list of what you’d like to see, check to make sure the places are open on the days and times you need and prioritize! No matter your budget, check out some of the free things to do in London!
Personally, I would definitely budget enough to take a city bus tour right away for several reasons. Not only can you acclimate yourself to the lay of the land, but you can see sights that you have always wanted to see but not necessarily want to pay money or take the time to visit. You can see the Tower Bridge, the Thames, the London Eye (the Ferris wheel which is about $30 to ride), Harrods, Big Ben, Parliament and Buckingham Palace by riding by on a
tour bus. You still get to see them but are saving the cost of admission and the time to see other things on your list.
Now for some of the free attractions! Trafalgar Square and the pigeons, Piccadilly Circus or standing at the Palace’s gate and watch the Changing of the Guard are free! Shoppers can freely go to Old Spitalfields Market, an outdoor but tented market full of stalls open Thursday–Sunday or to Portobello Road Market and Camden Market or walk in Harrods, Selfridges and Marks & Spencer.
If you like history, the British Museum is free! Within its walls you can see such artifacts as the Rosetta Stone (written in 196 BC in three different languages, this was the key to translating Egyptian hieroglyphs). Admission is free to the Imperial War Museum (except for certain exhibits). Postmans Park is a small memorial to those who have died saving others. The Tower of London has a gate-closing called the Ceremony of the Keys. It has never

been cancelled for 700 years. You can see the ceremony for free by writing to Ceremony of the Keys Office, Tower of London, London, EC3N 4AB ahead of time. The Tower of London is worth the price of admission however and not to be missed if at all possible.
Do you like movies?
The British Film Institute at Southbank shows films, has previews and special events (most which cost) and you can see over 1000 hours of free film and TV in the Mediatheque. Students and lovers of film will enjoy the library and film shop. The Southbank complex also has the Royal Festival Hall and a Skateboard Park and imaginative art by talented graffiti artists.
you plan ahead, you may see a free screenings of cult movies with animals or monsters with a complimentary glass of wine and tour of the museum. The Natural History Museum is also free.
If you enjoy visual art, The Victoria and Albert Museum is not far away. Some exhibitions and areas do have a charge but most of the collections of paintings, jewelry, books, photography and theater are free. Also, the National Gallery has paintings by Seurat, Turner, Vermeer, and others equally famous all for free!
If animals or natural history is your passion, you will love the Grant Museum of Zoology with its 67,000 specimens including Dodo bones and a big jar of preserved moles! If
Do you dream of an English garden? Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are both free. You can see the Peter Pan statue, the Princess Diana playground and the lovely landscaping all located where King Henry the VIII strolled about.

KIRKWOOD DES PERES
BY BARBARA J. BYERLY
The Kirkwood and Des Peres area is often referred to as a “very special place” by residents and visitors alike. They are joined by business owners eager to locate in these communities.Making it a special place is a wonderful blend of the area’s overall historic character; unique shops; large shopping center; friendliness, variety of arts and entertainment; great restaurants; excellent school district; beautiful parks and wide range of children’s activities.
Rather than leaving it to chance, this success has been the result of solid leadership, tracking trends and opportunities, working with community organizations, strategic planning and thinking. These traits have worked to keep this area ahead of the curve,” reports Jim Wright, president of the Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber
of Commerce. The result has been the creation of cities for all seasons of one’s life. From large to modest sized homes; from luxury to smaller, more intimate senior living facilities and a wide range of fine childcare services available. All residents and businesses receive a high level of city services.

DOWNTOWN KIRKWOOD SPECIAL BUSINESS DISTRICT
The Downtown Kirkwood Special Business District (SBD) is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. In 1975, the district became the first of its kind to be established in Missouri. Kirkwood Farmers’ Market, located one block east of Kirkwood’s historic train station, at 150 E. Argonne Drive, was established as a bicentennial community improvement project in 1976—making it one of the longest running farmers’ markets in the region. The Farmers’ Market is open most days April-December.
The historic Kirkwood Train Station and Kirkwood Farmers’ Market are at the core of Downtown Kirkwood. Several well-known and successful businesses are located in the 16-block district. Many are locally owned and/or family owned. Downtown Kirkwood is bordered by The Magic House, St Louis Children’s Museum on the south; East Bodley Avenue on the north; Taylor Avenue on the east and Clay Avenue on the west.
The vibrant atmosphere paired with unique and historic buildings, green spaces and a walkable environment attracts visitors, customers and entrepreneurs to downtown Kirkwood. Several new retail businesses have opened in the last year. They include Sammy’s Soaps, Jimmy John’s, SoLuna, Smallcakes and Strange Donuts. Additionally, McArthur’s Bakery will be moving to a much larger space in downtown Kirkwood this year.

In-Home Culinary Classes
A GREEN SMOOTHIE POPEYE WILL LOVE!
I know what you’re thinking, “a green smoothie, yuck!”
In-Home Culinary Classes
Are you a veggie lover or do you quietly sneak them to your pet under the table?
I’ve always loved vegetables. As a child I ate so much spinach they use to call me Popeye!
However, regardless of how many vegetables you eat it’s still challenging to meet the guidelines set to keep your body fueled and healthy. What my body needs will differ from yours based on gender, age, height, weight, and daily activity. To learn more, check out the chart @ www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.
Did you know that most vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories? None have cholesterol, unless of course you douse them with sauces and fat. So it makes perfect sense to begin incorporating them into your diet if you haven’t already.
Green smoothies promote nutrient absorption, and increased energy. The more nutrients that enter the bloodstream, the more energy the body is able to use. These nutrients include:
• Potassium- helps maintain healthy blood pressure
• Dietary fiber - can reduce blood cholesterol levels and lower your risk of heart disease
• Folate and Vitamins A & E - contribute to improving eyes & skin complexion
• Vitamin C - heals wounds, keeps teeth and gums healthy, while aiding in iron absorption
• Vitamin K and Calcium - protects against osteoporosis
Additionally, these and other nutrients contained in dark green (leafy) vegetables aid to improve the immune system and internal organs, and are believed to be one of the top cancer-preventing foods due to their high antioxidant content.
So what are you waiting for? Why not incorporate Green Smoothies into your daily regimen?
A Green Smoothie every morning will jump-start your day plus help you maintain a lean body! Just one 8 ounce glass fills me up, providing the energy needed to keep me sustained throughout the day.
Recently I taught a Raw Foods class to cancer survivors, and prior to trying this recipe they all turned up their noses. After tasting it, each went back for seconds and some, thirds.
Try blending your own green smoothie using fresh spinach, kale, fresh fruit, nuts, protein powder or whatever you desire to create your own special blend. For an endless supply of recipes to sample get the App, “Green Smoothies.”
Nothing makes you feel better than when you nourish your body from the inside out.
Here’s my recipe, I hope you’ll try it.
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup green grapes
1/2 cup fresh pineapple chunks
2 cups fresh spinach, packed
1/2 ripe banana, peeled 1/2 cup water
1/2 cup ice cubes
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place all ingredients into the blender in the order listed and secure lid.
2. Turn machine on and slowly increase speed to high.
3. Blend for 1 minute or until desired consistency is reached.
4. Serve immediately or store in refrigerator for up to 3 days.

perso N of i N terest Linda Green-Metzler
BY SHEILA FRAYNE RHOADES
As a watercolorist and illustrator, Linda Green-Metzler has made her mark on St. Louis’ art scene.
Metzler’s paintings of familiar rural and urban subjects radiate color. Each piece tells a story of our area’s local life. Metzler said, “I think it’s the artist’s job to reflect the culture and times we live in. Tell the story of your world, your place, and your connection to it.”
Metzler has been chronicling her surroundings since her early teens as a student at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago, and then at the Art Students League of New York in the 60s during the Pop Art Era. She earned her BFA in painting from Scripps College in Claremont, California in 1967 where her signature “sense of color” blossomed. She became an assistant art director in Ralston Purina’s International Division in 1975, and eventually opened her own, graphics business - Design Communications, Green, Inc. in 1976.
Today, her focus is entirely on painting, especially New Missouri Regionalism. She states, “The regional aspect of my current work is meant to re-enforce association with the New Regionalists.”
Jonathon Kodner (Kodner Gallery), contributing author to “Missouri River Country: 100 Miles of Stories and Scenery From Hermann to the Confluence” explained, " Linda Green-Metzler is a wonderful emerging Missouri impressionist artist that is part of an upcoming group of "en plein air". These landscape painters focus on the outdoors and capture the immediacy of that experience onto canvas. This process, pioneered by the great Impressionists of the 19th Century, is embraced by Metzler and other Missouri artists, all of whom use natural light and color to depict the landscape in its purest form."
She is a juried member of Best of Missouri Hands in Painting, a Signature Member of the St. Louis Watercolor Society and The Artists Guild of St. Louis, and was elected a life member of the Art Students League of New York in 1975.
This April, Metzler will again participate in the annual Augusta Plein Air event. Her rich impressions of Missouri Wine Country will be in this event’s May 3rd show.
