jewelry estate
by robyn Walker
Did you know that the price of real gold has risen to an all-time high? So purchasing real gold jewelry can be quite a pricey acquisition these days. The good news is that when you purchase real gold jewelry from an estate jewelry collection, you’ll most likely pay considerably less than what you would pay if you purchased a piece of new gold jewelry. The fact is, fine estate jewelry of all types such as gold jewelry, diamond jewelry, gemstone jewelry, vintage estate jewelry and antique estate jewelry, has become one of the most sought-after and valuable types of fine jewelry.
One of the most coveted types of fine estate jewelry is antique estate jewelry from important periods in history such as the Edwardian Era and The Victorian Era. Vintage pieces of estate jewelry are also very desirable, although they are not considered to be antique estate jewelry. it’s interesting to note that the antique estate jewelry that is more than 100 years old, is recognized as having outstanding workmanship of the highest quality.
Curt parker, owner of Curt parker Jewelers, gives an in-depth definition of estate jewelry. “Estate jewelry is
any previously-owned jewelry offered for sale again. That includes jewelry purchased from someone’s estate. antique jewelry, which is resold, is also considered to be estate jewelry. however, all estate jewelry is not necessarily antique jewelry. The major appeal of estate jewels is their uniqueness. Sometimes a piece of estate jewelry speaks to the buyer of an earlier, happier time or for a special loved one. Demand and rarity both affect the price of estate jewelry. in estate jewelry, the demand can increase or decrease the price of a piece of estate jewelry. The

recent sale of Elizabeth Taylor‘s extraordinary jewels also influence the price of estate pieces. The economic climate, the price of gold and platinum, import restrictions for rubies and jade from Burma, and flooded Tanzanite mines in Tanzania all affect the price of estate jewelry,” explains parker.
high-profile estate jewelry collections that are sold at auction can generate sales in the millions of dollars and the buyers are often from a worldwide audience. for instance, the important fine jewelry collection that was once owned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was auctioned at Sotheby‘s in 2005. Onassis’s estate jewelry collection is considered to be one of the most important estate jewelry collections in recent years. it’s estimated that Onassis’s estate jewelry sale, including other personal possessions owned by Onassis, generated more than $34,000,000.
The Duchess Of Windsor ‘s extraordinary jewelry collection was truly amazing. i amassed over 200 pieces of designer jewelry during her lifetime as the wife of The Duke Of Windsor. The incredible jewelry collection brought an astounding sale price at a Sotheby’s auction of more than $53,000,000.
The Elizabeth Taylor Jewelry Collection, owned by legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor, was auctioned last year at Christie’s. Taylor’s extraordinary jewels sold for an amazing sum of money __ more than $115,000,000.
if you’re interested in acquiring a piece of fine estate jewelry, there are many fine St. Louis jewelers that have impressive estate jewelry collections.
You’ll find an extensive collection of estate jewelry at Timekeepers, which has convenient locations in Clayton and Olivette. Many of the estate jewelry pieces at Timekeeprs are vintage estate pieces such as this exceptional diamond and emerald ring and an elegant diamond and emerald bracelet that dates back to the 1920’s.
Curt parker Jewelers, located in Ladue, is a must-visit for fine estate jewelry such as gorgeous gemstone rings and pendants.
Décor Jewelry, situated in Chesterfield, has an impressive selection of fine estate jewelry.

Chesterfield is recognized as being one of the major West County suburbs that attracts many families to relocate
there because it’s conveniently situated just thirty miles west of St. Louis and offers attractive homes on spacious lots that are more affordable that many other suburbs. Town & Country was originally a more rural area of woodlands and farmlands. in 1950, Town & Country was incorporated as a “village, and had a modest population of less than 1,00 residents, but it slowly evolved into a residential community consisting mainly of beautiful homes on spacious property and now has a population of 11,000 residents.
Best of all, many of St. Louis county’s great restaurants are part of the Chesterfield and Town & Country areas.

This welllandscaped, community is about twelve miles west of St. Louis and is centrally located in St. Louis County. residents often refer to Town & Country as “prestigious” and “suburban”.
fortunately, Town & Country retained its rural feeling because many of the homes have large, well-landscaped lots. if you visit Town & Country, you will see beautiful homes and scenic landscapes, as well as charming white fences and even horses. in addition, Town & Country boasts three city parks—Drace park, Longview farm and preservation park. Massage used to be considered a luxury for men and women who want to be pampered. however, these days, a growing number of men and women are becoming educated on the important benefits of a therapeutic massage. You should look at a therapeutic massage or a sports massage the same way that you would look at any other health-enhancing activities such as exercising, eating healthy and getting a good night’s sleep.
Cory Moran, who is nationally certified in therapeutic massage and body working, says, “Therapeutic and sports massage should be a part of your ongoing health maintenance. i provide my clients with therapeutic and sports massages. i work with recreational and professional athletes of all kinds. My clients include baseball players, hockey players, basketball and football players, as well as bicyclists, fitness competitors, runners, golfers and tennis player. no matter how active you are or how old you are, my unique therapeutic and sports massages will benefit you in many ways.”
What makes Cory Moran’s massages so highly recommended? Moran explains, “i’m an athlete and i live a very active lifestyle, so i’m knowledgeable about how the body works and how to help you reach your goals in our customized massage sessions. i blend many modalities of massage together, which includes deep tissue, myofascial release, reiki energy balancing, stretching, Swedish massage and reflexology.”
“i provide my clients with a wide variety of benefits. My sports massages and therapeutic massages help my client to
train more effectively. if a client has a sports-related injury, my massages will help my client to recover more quickly. My massages also improve my clients’ athletic performance and help to prevent injury,” says Moran.
it is a proven fact that many athletes suffer from muscle stiffness and Moran notes that his sports massages help to reduce muscle stiffness. Moran says, “Therapeutic and sports massages improve relaxation by increasing circulation and reducing heart rate and blood pressure. Therapeutic and sports massages also improve a person’s joint flexibility and his or her range of motion. The more general benefits of sports and therapeutic massages are improved sleep, anti-aging benefits, energy balancing and cleansing, as well as helping to improve physical and emotional ailments. The bottom line is that my sports massages and therapeutic massages give my clients a wide variety of benefits.” ut

Sandi russe, owner of Samantha’s Other p lace and a licensed massage therapist, feels that, in today’s world, there is not enough time to slow down between appointments and tight obligations. it’s as important to nurture yourself as nurturing others. Sandi believes that massage is a great way to do this. “By adding to your busy day one hour that’s all for you, you can enjoy the many benefits that massage offers,” says Sandi.
Sandi takes a “whole”istic approach and considers the whole being. She specializes in full body massages and she offers some alternative techniques for those who are

Most everyone wants to have beautiful skin. Doesn’t matter what your age or gender is, who doesn’t want to have healthy glowing skin. here are some tips to help in achieving that beautiful glow and healthy skin.
topically applied Skin care
Using naturally effective skincare products and eating foods that fortify and foster healthy cells works to renew, repair and rejuvenate skin for lasting beauty. Many authorities have good reason to believe facts from food nutrients such as antioxidants, ant- inflammatory compounds and omega oils are now showing in personal care products. according to studies published in the journal of pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics , food and Chemical Toxicology and Environmental health perspective, skin can absorb up to 60 percent of what we apply to it. So feeding skin high- quality ingredients may be as critical as the food we eat.

ydrate
ts common knowledge that drinking a sufficient amount of pure water is essential for overall health and radiant skin. We are always being told to drink 8 glasses of water or more per day. This not only hydrates our skin, it also continues to flush out your system removing toxins that we put in our system through food consumption.
blueberrieS
Tufts University human nutrition research Center on aging reports that blueberries contain some of the highest antioxidant levels of any food, especially when fully ripe, and teem with skin healing ant-inflammatory properties. The deep purple-blue color of these morsels is a reflection of the pigment rich antioxidant phytonutrients, shown to improve the integrity of collagen in skin and inhibit photo aging (sun damage)according to a study in the Journal of photochemistry and photobiology.
avocadoS
abundant in skin-beautifying goodies: Omega-3 fatty acids, which support healthy, flexible strong cell membranes to ensure that nutrients can enter cells and waste can be removed; antioxidant vitamins a and E ; fortifying B-complex vitamins; lecithin, to protect and strengthen cell walls; potassium to support new cell growth. They also host a portfolio of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compoundsincluding phytosterols, carotenoids, flavonoids, zinc and folate-that fight free radicals and repair, soothe and renew skin and tissue on a cellular level.
Spinach, SWiSS chard, parSley and collard greenS
Dark leafy vegetables offer more nutrients with fewer calories than any other food. Like cruciferous veggies they’re packed with carotenoid antioxidants. green veggies are also an excellent source of vitamins a and C, which the body need to produce and regulate the sebum in our skin, nails and hair follicles for healthy, well conditioned skin and supple complexion.
chocolate
Offers a wealth of antioxidant catechins ( like those found in green tea ), and according to the national academy of Sciences and the European Journal of nutrition, works to improve hydration, skin density and circulation of the blood to skin tissue, for a more youthful, glowing complexion. Scientific american and the Journal of investigative Dermatology report that chocolate is a supreme source of procyanidins, which counter skin damage and help protect it while stimulating cellular growth and renewal. Dark chocolate offers the most beautifying benefits per bite so look for 70 percent or higher cocoa content, and keep the portions small to manage calories and fat intake.
roccoli, cabbage, kale and radiSheS
Cruciferous vegetables are loaded with skin beautifying compounds. according to studies by the national academy of Sciences, its sulfur-containing phytonutrients boost the body’s natural detoxification enzymes to combat and repair damage to skin. Low in calories these mineral-dense and antioxidant-rich veggies are packed with carotenoid and oxidative stress on skin, reduce inflammation and bolster immune response. They also contain isothiacyanates, which research published by The american Journal of Clinical nutrition shows specifically guard against breast cancer.
red Wine
Loaded with beneficial antioxidant and antiinflammatory flavonoids, red wine is a well-known source of cell protecting resveratrol. Concentrated in the skin of grapes and championed for anti-aging and anticancer properties in studies published by Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology and anticancer research. resveratrol appears to protect the skin against the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Cabernet Sauvignon grapes contain some of the highest concentrate of age-defying antioxidants.
omega-oilS
healthy oils including omega fatty acids grown and nourish healthy glowing skin, strong nails and lustrous hair. They act as a conditioner for skin, maintaining and supporting healthy , flexible, strong cell membranes to ensure that nutrients can enter cells and waste can be removed. Uncooked oils offer many beautifying benefits; because many nutrients are damaged and destroyed by heat-the fresher and less refined the oil, the better. foods rich in omegas include flax seed and oil; olives and olive oil; pumpkin seed and oil; walnuts and winter squash. ut

A gift
Wour necks using the phone, use work related repetitive motions, stand for hours, make appointments, then run for them, teach, police and tend pets, friends, children and spouses. Our bodies are abused. My bones ache, my neck has kinks, my shoulder is constantly sore and my feet hurt. My body reflects my life. isn’t that sad! Especially when i realize it’s all me and my life choices. Me. Mind, body, spirit. all three obviously need some major help. What can we do for a quick fix and “me” time? What will soothe, relax and heal all three neglected parts of you? a spa.

Many of you have already had the spa experience and know what real down time means. imagine full body relaxation, floating, tranquil music, time to think or not to think at all, massages to work out the knots and a chance to tune in to all of your senses. i was a late bloomer. The thought of being touched on bare skin by someone i am not in love with was gross. perfume and sweet smells made me sneeze. Walking around in a robe with a bunch of “beautiful” people sounded horribly intimidating. p lus, there was the money issue. Don’t these places cost a zillion dollars? When my friend found me in the middle of a store, rubbing my back against a pillar like a buffalo with an itch, i knew it was time! i went to an “energy healer” who used a form of pranic healing, pressure points and needed conversation which aligned my thinking as well as my body. We need to pay attention to ourselves. We need to relax, to give our bodies down time and give our soul nourishment.
a good spa will offer a variety of services, prices and times. facials, manicures, pedicures, body treatments and massages can come with different techniques and ingredients such as herbs, hot rocks, mud and vegetables. Times can run from 15 or 20 to 120 minutes or you can spend all day or week in “spa heaven”.
My pick in St. Louis is the four Seasons on the Landing at the Lumiere complex. go for a treatment or have an entire weekend! There’s plenty to do on the Landing which is abundant with breweries, restaurants, clubs , the royal Dumpe Dinner Theater (yes, it’s still doing shows) the riverboats and the arch and all are less two or three blocks away. The casino is right downstairs!
four Seasons Spa offers their unique Signature treatments using caviar or grape seed and clay, seaweed, bamboo, lavender, lemongrass. Massages cater to the physically active sporty types, couples, prenatal and even teens.
if you would like an overnight getaway other than downtown, you might be surprised by the many spas within a day’s driving distance. Just ninety miles south of Chicago lay the heartland Spa in gilman, illinois. Set on a 32-acre former dairy farm, this spa offers a health and fitness program for just you or for groups. The property is a resort and spa with all inclusive packages, in a wooded country setting. The West Baden Springs hotel at the french Lick resort in southern indiana has rejuvenating therapeutic mineral springs and is only around 4 hours away.
if you feel overwhelmed by the many choices, first, decide if you are simply looking for a massage or a destination. Many reputable companies are in the St. Louis area. Massage Envy, a franchise company, has over 10 locations in the St. Louis area and offers massages at a reasonable rate. You may prefer a destination spa where every guest is a participant. remember, most luxury hotels have spas so do your research and find the one that appeals to your budget and aesthetic senses. Would you prefer a wellness spa, a spiritual retreat, a homeopathic spa, a woodland setting, Zen oriental, mountains or a western setting. Check out the services, prices, location and history. a great resource is the web site www.spafinder.com. not only do they list some great spas but also give hints on how to choose the right one for you and a page on spa etiquette. Do it. it’s the perfect gift for you or someone you love. ut

new designs in kitchens
by Wendy SchleSinger
Traditional, modern, contemporary, eclectic - as many different design styles as you can imagine for your living room, any and all of those styles can be applied to your kitchen as well. Though granite and stainless may be de rigeuer for many, with the large variety of materials available today virtually any style is attainable. When designing your kitchen let your imagination run wild. as the center of the home it’s where you’re likely to spend much, if not most of your time, so it should truly reflect you and your family. it’s already practical by necessity, so have some fun with it and let it speak to the soul. in the same way that not everyone likes brussels sprouts or, dare i say, chocolate, there’s a different flavor in kitchens for every taste bud.

feel
Start by asking yourself “What do i want my kitchen to be?” Calming? Exciting? relaxing? a showplace? This will start you off on the mood. St. Louis designer rebecca Devereux, of Devereux Designs, encourages clients not to think of the room as a kitchen. View it as a room with furniture. instead of seeing a place where cabinets go, think of it in terms of perhaps a curved front hutch. Devereux’s goal with clients is “how can we turn this into furniture that you want to keep the rest of your life. if you do that, your kitchen’s never going to feel dated.”
now that you’ve taken off your kitchen blinders, select a few of your favorite colors to set the mood. “Once you’ve got your color palette down, even if it’s just two colors, repeating them in different tones makes a room feel really rich.” says designer angelo Surmelis of hgTV’s rate My Space. This repetition may come in the color and texture of the floors, the subtle specks of color in the countertops, or more obvious places like in the backsplash or any fabrics that are used.
color
Typically one thinks of color in the kitchen in terms of fabrics or wall color but it’s everywhere from the stain of the cabinets to the striations in the floor. if you’re looking to be bold with color, regardless of how other-worldly your aesthetic is, you’re still going to have to work around appliances. although silver, white and black act as a
Shape
This is not an element many think of in terms of kitchens. That may be primarily due to space constraints, but as kitchens grow in size and openness there is greater opportunity for literally thinking outside the box. islands can be a variety of shapes; circular, keyhole with dining at one end, triangles that accommodate large storage areas underneath, or even split counters at the room’s opening to create a dramatic entrance. The primary consideration in the shape design is functionality; how the design works with your triangulated work flow and how you use your kitchen (entertaining, as a space for take-out, cooking with multiple chefs etc.).
perSonality
islands especially lend themselves to looking like a unique piece of furniture. Devereux says “There are so many options now you can build whatever you want. and you can curve it. [You can make it look] like you found a magnificent piece of furniture that you happened to plop appliances into.” The choices are endless; stack crown moulding, contemporary metal work, posts, feet, and tons of wood accessories all of which allow you to create a truly unique design. She adds “Even hoods are furniture now - i just did a phenomenal pea green hood.” Unexpected, but magnificent - and personal. The advent of newer, malleable materials also helps to open up designs to even greater possibilities. Local designer Diane
wonderful backdrop for splashes of color, you can also opt to put your color in the appliances themselves - or not. an appliance can act as a center piece - think a bright red stove - or as camouflage where the appliance blends in seamlessly with a matching cabinet facade.
if you’re going for a more traditional or subtle look for your cabinets - ones that will stand the test of time, especially if you’re concerned about resale value - the best bet is to choose a finish between blonde and brunette. if you get bored, keep in mind the cabinetry will last longer than the finish, and you can always paint, or change out the hardware to update the look. That being said, the current trend in cabinetry is dark stained or even black. if you’re ready to go bold, but not ready to break the bank, consider painting the cabinets or having them resurfaced. Many people will paint the cabinet surround and interior themselves and have the fronts done professionally to assure a clean, smooth surface.
rosen, of Diane rosen interiors, has a bent toward concrete for countertops because you can literally form it into any shape you desire. The only limit is your imagination. You can also transform your existing countertops with concrete to add drama and style. recycled glass or inlaid tiles are another option that have great flexibility allowing you to create a truly individual and personalized design.
if you’ve been dreaming of a new kitchen, dream big. Don’t be limited by what you see in the showrooms or at your neighbors. Looking online may give you ideas you hadn’t even imagined. You can always tone it down, but seeing possibilities can be as exciting as your first taste of chocolate, or dare i say brussels sprouts? ut

The collection of high-end contemporary styles also includes lingerie, gifts and house of harlow handbags. Even the store’s atmosphere, with its loft-like ceilings and caged chandeliers, will make you feel as regal as the queen it was named for.
Located in the World Chess hall of fame, Q Boutique, (4652 Maryland, 314-367-9243, qboutiquestl.com) will stop you in your tracks with their elegant display of all things chess, of course, but gifts for the entire family and home as well.
