designer fashion trends
What are the newest, most talked-about designer fashion trends for Spring 2013?
The most sought-after fashion designers have created contemporary fashion collections for the spring season in a lively mix of bold, bright colors such as hot pink, trendy turquoise, neon coral, vibrant orange, vivid red, cobalt blue, spring green and sunny yellow.
The power of prints is evident in the Spring 2013 designer fashion collections. Many of the new fashion looks that you’ll see this spring are designed in multi-colored print fabrics. Trending now are geometric, abstract and floral prints in pretty pastels and contrasting black and white tones.
What we like most about the new designer fashion collections for Spring 2013 are the elegant, easy-to-wear dresses designed with luxe fabrics such as silk and cotton. The Spring 2013 fashion trends are all about feminine, flattering silhouettes that you’ll adore wearing day and night. Color-block dresses designed with highimpact colors make a bold fashion statement. For Spring 2013, you’ll see a multitude of chic dress styles such as sophisticated one-shoulder dresses, classic sheaths, casual shifts, short dresses, maxi dresses and strapless dresses. Romantic lace is everywhere for Spring 2013. You’ll see lovely lace dresses designed in bold colors as well as traditional looks in elegant black lace and pristine white lace. High-contrast white dresses trimmed with black fabric are a Spring 2013 fashion trend to look for.
Fun-to-wear striped fashion designed with horizontal, diagonal and vertical stripes is an important fashion trend to watch for Spring 2013.
We think you’ll agree that these are the best and brightest designer fashion trends for Spring 2013. ut

ummer is creeping in! Time to once again break out the power suit of the season. Whether you can't wait to slip into that bikini, or you face swimsuit shopping with the same level of enthusiasm as a bad sunburn on the first day of vacation, the following fashions are sure to turn heads from the beaches of Saint Tropez" to poolside in St. Louis.

The heat index isn't the only thing that is rising. Waistlines are on the up and up again in 2013. This homage to mid-twentieth century pin-ups rocked the runways this season, especially when paired with a boudoir-inspired bustier style top. In fact, details that are commonly associated with undergarments, such as boning and lace, have emerged from the boudoir to the beach.
2.
Electrify onlookers with swimwear in blazing neon hues. Whether solid or multi- colored, swimwear in an array of shocking shades will command attention this season. Those bold enough to bare it all in shocking colored swimwear are sure to be the light of every pool party. If neon hues seem a bit too daring, opt for beach tones. Sunset shades of red, orange, pink and yellow, ranging from bold to pastel, to Caribbean blue, turquoise, and sea foam also painted the runways for 2013.
Calling all frill-seekers! Ruffles, shirring, and skirted-bottoms are back on the beach this season. Not only will they earn you major points in the style department; these flattering features also add oomph in all the right places, and provide coverage for problem areas.
Following a lengthy dive, SCUBA styles have emerged for air this season. You won't need a SCUBA diver's certification to dress in swimwear inspired by one. Gear up in one of this season's hottest swim trends that is unlikely to tank anytime soon.
This summer, work all the right angles and stripe it rich in swimwear splashed with bold geometric patterns and stripes. If you prefer a softer, more feminine pattern, floral prints are also in full fashion bloom-No green
Regardless of whether you dare to go bare in a bikini or prefer to step out in a slightly less revealing one-piece, its all in the details this season. So slather on the sunscreen and unleash your inner sun goddess. She has been trapped under bulky winter layers for much too long. ut

by Courtney brown
Let's face it: day to day life can be harsh on the skin, and as stress levels consistently build, your appearance and sense of overall well-being begins to fall apart. Get your glow back with relaxing spa services from basic facials to body wraps. With the wide range of treatment options and services offered, everyone can find an affordable way to unwind and rejuvenate.
20 | Uptown Magazine
It all begins with the face. Are you putting your best one forward? If you hesitate to answer this question, then a revitalizing facial could be just what you need. A basic facial is suitable for all skin types. However, if you wish to customize the experience, many spas and salons offer additional peels, topical products and pressure point massage. Tymm's Place in Ladue offers an extensive menu of a la carte indulgences to enhance the basic facial. During their basic facial, the pores of the face are deeply cleansed and the skin is gently exfoliated and treated with a replenishing moisturizing serum containing vitamin c. Samantha's Other Place, a fullservice salon in Clayton, also offers a variety of facial treatment options, from their mini-facial to youth light treatment, in which light stimulates the natural restorative cell processes of the skin. Chesterfield's
cells will reveal skin that looks younger and feels smoother.
If you experience the occasional acne outbreak, opt for a facial that is specific to the treatment of pimples and blackheads. This will involve the use of Salicylic Acid serums to dry active outbreaks, and pore refining masks. Skin will be hydrated using an oil-free moisturizer.
Think massages are just for an aching back or tired feet? Think again. Since the face reaps the same benefits from massage as the rest of the body, Tymm's Place offers a Lymph Drainage Massage for the face. If you are sidelined by sinus infections, pressure point massage techniques can reduce sinus pressure and swelling by promoting increased blood flow and lymph drainage, along with removing toxins. As an added bonus, this type of treatment will reduce the appearance of dark circles, allowing you to look well rested and vibrant.
If you're looking for a treatment that goes deeper, a peel is a great way to further enhance a facial. Following this treatment, recipients often report that they look at least a few years younger. Unfortunately, the fountain of youth has yet to be discovered. If you have minimal to moderate skin damage due to ultraviolet exposure or harsh environmental elements, or if your skin appears to be aging faster than you had planned for, peels provide a less invasive and more affordable alternative to laser treatments or surgical cosmetic procedures. Oftentimes, an esthetician will consult with each customer to determine an appropriate choice based on skin type, and variances in tone and texture. For optimal results, a series of six peels is recommended. Minimally aggressive Glycolic peels are recommended for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and minimal to moderate sun damage. Body Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Skincare Center offers the Antibac peel, in which Salicylic acid is used to exfoliate the skin and treat acne. As with any peel, temporary redness and mild discomfort may occur immediately after the treatment, but if you long for younger looking skin and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, any temporary discomfort is well worth the ultimate results. Consult with your aesthetician at Tymm's Place or at Body Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Skincare Center to discuss which peels are best suited to your unique skincare needs.
If the dry winter air left you with lackluster lips, pucker up for Spa Lucca's Luscious Lip treatment. This treatment exfoliates and plumps the lips, and then a kissable citrus balm is applied to restore moisture. Best of all, Spa Lucca not only offers this as a spa service; they also sell the products used in the salon treatment, so that you can keep your lips looking luscious all year long. Going for that all over glow from the neck down? Go sunless to get that sun kissed look this spring without risking sun damage. Let Spa Lucca aestheticians apply tanning spray by Sun FX to achieve bronzing without the risk of orange streaks.
Get ready to show off a more youthful, refreshed, and glowing you this spring by treating yourself to one or more of these relaxing and renewing treatments at the salons suggested in this article. Surely, you deserve some time for yourself! ut

superfoods
by Courtney brown
Exactly what makes a socalled 'superfood' so super?
Well, quite honestly, the umbrella term superfood is more or less a title used for marketing purposes in the fitness and health industry.
that you can find in (aLmost) any grocery store
Alaskan Salmon: Eat it for the Omega 3s, which may help prevent Cancer, improve your mood, and could even help ward off Alzheimer’s. Also, fish is an excellent, lean source of protein.
Sufficient scientific evidence is lacking when it comes to proving that these foods will undoubtedly cure disease are held to a higher standard because they contain higher foods are believed to have very few, if any, harmful effects
store or organic foods store. Why not make it a goal
Blueberries: Blueberries contain high levels of anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant that is believed to help fight wrinkles.
Cherries (Tart) are packed with anti-inflammatory compounds, which may help soothe and prevent aches and pains, and could help fight heart disease.
Dark Chocolate: Who knew it could be so good for you? Look for varieties with 60% cocoa flavonoids or higher for potential reduction in bad cholesterol levels, as well as blood pressure.
Eggs: This inexpensive, versatile superfood packs a punch of protein, and may help you maintain healthy eyes due to it's carotenoid content.
Flaxseed: A tablespoon a day helps regulate digestion thanks to the high fiber content, and its alpha linoleic acid has benefits comparable to Omega 3's.
Greek Yogurt: With double the amount of protein of regular yogurt, this cool creamy treat helps satisfy your appetite. It is also a great way to add some calcium to your diet.
Honey: Raw honey may help reduce allergy symptoms, and when used both externally on the skin, and when consumed, it has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.
Jalapeños: Capsaicin, the burn inducing compound in peppers, is a known pain reliever because it inhibits the neuropeptide Substance-P, a key pain transmitter. These hot little numbers may also rev the metabolism, since Capsaicin is believed to have thermogenic properties.
Kiwi: Due to the high content of edible seeds in Kiwifruit, it is likely to be a good source of omega-3. The fruit also boasts high levels of fiber and vitamin-c.
Milk: (Soy, fat-free, or rice): Raise your glass. Milk contains a properly balanced ratio of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, as well as high levels of calcium carbonate, which is one of the best forms of calcium due to its ability to be absorbed.
Nectarines: Packed with carotene, vitamins A and C, potassium, and fiber, as well as Lutein, a pigment found in the retina of the eye, which may help prevent Macular Degeneration.
Oats: One of the best sources of soluble fiber, which helps keep cholesterol and blood sugar levels in check.
Pumpkin: This fall-favorite is a great source of Beta Carotene, an antioxidant that helps keep skin youthful, protects your vision, and may even help prevent Arthritis.
Quinoa: A delicious substitute for rice, this grain has more protein than any other food in its category, and it is a complete protein due to its Lysine content.
Spinach: Providing 12% of your daily value of protein, this leafy green provides more protein than any other vegetable. Spinach is also rich in vitamins A and K, as well as folate, carotenoids, flavonoids, magnesium, iron, and potassium. So, really, is there anything that spinach doesn't do to help the body.
Tomatoes: Low in calories and versatile, the tomato is also an excellent source of Lycopene, an anti-oxidant phytochemical that helps protect the heart, as well as vitamins A, C and E, all of which help prevent Cancer by helping to remove freeradicals from the body. ut
traveling alone? Go for it!
by linda SPall
Bombarded with images of happy families running along a pristine white sandy beach, romantic couples toasting champagne in the moonlight on the Riviera Mayan coast or attractive middle aged couples at the roulette table in Vegas, the majority of us shake our heads.
Our dreams of travel are much more adventurous and more about what we truly want to see and experience. The volcanos in Hawaii, the Louvre in Paris, a cooking class in Burgandy, a tour of Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val Kill or visiting an ashram in India. We come in all shapes and sizes as couples, as singles, with family and without. According to the 2011 census, 102 million of Americans 18 and older are unmarried making up 44.1 percent of US residents! 53% of those 102 million were women! It is time for us to explore our options, overcome our imagined obstacles and fulfill our dreams. Folks, it’s OK to travel alone. It’s OK to be self-reliant. The opportunities are there for you. You can do this. My grandparents’ idea of a family
vacation was driving out to Manchester, Missouri, North St. Louis or DeSoto to see family. These destinations were very far from South St. Louis at the time. The next generation, which was my family, expanded their travels to seeing dad's family in Colorado and mom's sister in Indiana. The world had changed. Dad always wanted to go to Europe. He never did. Mom never flew on a plane.
It is now 2013 and our choices are many. We can vacation alone, (gasp!) with friends or with like-minded groups because travel companies have learned to accommodate our needs, specializing in singles, women only, and trips designed especially for our particular interest.
Take baby steps if you haven’t already.

Take a friend and go to St. Charles or Kimmswick or downtown St . Louis. Close by, each has history, shopping and restaurants. From there, branch out and see the eagles up in Alton, the wineries in St. Genevieve, go to Springfield, Illinois and visit Lincoln. Go to a spa. Have you been to the World Bird Sanctuary just down the road off Highway 44 by Fenton? There’s a whole world out there. Get used to broadening your horizons. No excuses. Sometimes, it’s just the cost of gasoline. You have a cell phone in case someone needs you or visa versa.
Many bus companies offer day trips or overnighters. We mistakenly think these are for older folks only. Rethink! If you get enough of our buddies to go with you, the dynamics change. How fun to not worry about driving. Relax, enjoy and travel "alone" with no worries! Some bus tour companies offer brewery tours, winery stops, outlet shopping. You can go alone. You can go with friends. You can make new friends. Best of all, you can go.
Ready for more adventure? Here’s the real fun! Certain travel companies cater just to women. Try “Gutsy Women Travel”. Their company slogan is “It’s Your Life – Live IT!”. Whether it’s a safari, a European River cruise or a trip to Morocco, you can travel alone and join others who are interested in the same itinerary. You also can organize your own group of women together and “Gutsy Women” will custom design your travel just for your group. Doesn’t a Mother-Daughter trip sound like a trip of a lifetime? As with most tour operators, you will have a tour leader who travels with you and takes care of your needs. Since a single room can be more expensive than splitting a double room, Gutsy Women has a Guaranteed Share Program.
Special interest group travel is another way to travel alone but with others. A great example is Sheri Rosenthal’s ”Journeys of the Spirit”. She offers a bevy of tours (some co-ed, some gender specific) which specialize in experiences elevating your mind, body and spirit. Spas, retreats,
meditation centers, Sedona, Machu Pichu, the Dalai Lama and so much more are offered with your spiritual growth in mind.
G Adventures offers various tours but what I find very special is their volunteer tours. You can give your talents to organic farming, preservation of wild life, youth centers, farm houses, and other unique causes. While experiencing the country and culture, you can immerse yourself and give. Wow. Get a group of your friends and go for it. (One of my most beloved friends goes to Biloxi, Mississippi every year with an organization composed of a group of young ladies who build houses for the less fortunate. She comes back absolutely glowing).
Searching the web, you can find travel companies galore with special interests. Couples, gay, senior travel, women only, cooking, adventure, hiking, biking, history, religious tours, spa, spiritual, wine, historical and art tours. You can find travel books and advice that specialize in women travel. Packing, tipping, safety precautions, spotting scammers, local customs, proper documentation and hygiene, are just a few of the aspects of women travel. (Rubber doorstops. Not something you’d think about bringing, huh?) As always, consult a trusted travel agent whose job it is to recommend reputable tour companies and the perfect one to fit your needs. Having a face-to-face discussion with a knowledgeable experienced travel consultant will be able to tell you options, insurance info, and general advice that will guide you in your research and most important of all, will have your back.
So get a pen and some paper and make your list of places you would like to see and with whom you would like to travel. Put your dreams in writing and whether you are traveling to Kansas City or racing a camel across the Sahara, go for it. You will travel and see yourself more clearly. You will be inspired. Really. Just go for it. ut

Mr. Parker’s
Perfect House
by linda SPall
When visiting the Missouri Botanical Gardens in the historic Shaw neighborhood, you may have passed the red brick two and four family flats and the enormous Victorian and Colonial style homes. Perhaps you can recall a time when the entrance to the Gardens was located at the end of a beautiful tree-lined street called Flora Place. Imagine entering one of these grand, ornate homes and meeting the owner whose passion for art, design, history, wood and preservation of the past match the exemplary grandeur of his home.
flora PlaCe hiStory
In the beginning, the French Denoyer family owned the land appropriately called “Prairie des Noyers”. Major William Christy purchased a large portion of the land and sold it to Captain William Chambers circa 1816. Around 1840, Henry Shaw bought land to the north and west of Chambers’ land and in turn, Mary Tyler, Chambers’
daughter, sold some of her inherited land at the northern strip to Henry Shaw. This basically became Henry Shaw’s driveway and is now Flora Place. Shaw’s Botanical Garden was damaged in the 1896 tornado and the City of St. Louis was asked to open Flora Avenue for development to help finance the repairs and re-plantings. Flora became a private street in 1897and received paving, curbs, sewers and trees at a cost of $100,000 and was platted in 1901. The highlight was the beautiful entrance gates which cost $9,500. The first home sale was approximately $4,000 dollars! It was around this time that our featured house was built.

the owner
Randall Parker, a six-foot four, handsome, personable attorney, allowed us to take a tour of his Colonial Revival style home on this historic street. Originally from Ohio, he attended law school here in St. Louis and never left. Thank goodness that he stayed because the house has the perfect owner. Not only is Parker interested in history, but he comes from generations of artists, furniture restorers and preservers of historical possessions. His great-grandfather, born the first year of the Civil War, was a woodcarver and carpenter whose craftsmanship flows throughout the house. His grandfather, Arnold E. Boedeker, attendee of the Art Institute of Chicago, was the first art director of Goodyear Tire and Rubber. In fact, the now familiar Wingfoot logo, still in use, was the work of Boedeker and appeared first in 1929. Boedeker, who signed his art as “Boedie”, was a prolific, talented painter whose works are displayed on all floors of the home. Randy’s grandmother was a beautiful
and stylish Ziegfeld Girl. In the parlor, her stunning portrait sits grandly between her distinguished husband’s photo and a perfectly placed framed piece of sheet music from the flapper era. This eloquent setting sitting atop a Moroccanfringed piano shawl, protecting the vintage piano underneath introduces the theme and ambiance of the house.
the houSe
According to Mr. Parker, the original owner of the property was a progressive widow named Emily Barthols who was a vice president of a real estate company. She had the house built in 1904 with the idea of selling it, but ended up staying for the World’s Fair and most of her life. Three days before the World’s Fair was opened, the house was finished. Mr. Parker is the 10th owner.
Parker says his decorating journey has been a “hypothetical restoration”. Not knowing the exact décor of the original house, he researched and restored by choosing furniture

and accents which closely matched the proper era. His attention to detail is meticulous. He replaced ceilings from surviving patterns with painstaking care and expense in order to duplicate the original décor. When possible, the original light fixtures were used and restored. We were fascinated by a set of lights which had two sets of on/off switches. When the house was built, the original lights had both gas and electric switches as there was a ten to fifteen year period when home owners were tentative to change their fixtures permanently, just in case electricity was an unreliable, fly-bynight invention.
Each room is a tastefully decorated showcase of inherited art, family crafted furniture, photographs, and carefully chosen accessories that meld in the turn of the
century theme.
The fireplaces are functional and the toasty warm radiators add a unique warmth and coziness to the house and to our imagination.
Choosing which aspect or possession in Parker’s home is the most memorable is humanly impossible as each piece of furniture, painting, photo or fixture is flawless and impressive. Above the mantle in the dining room appears to be a glass book case but instead it is a hand carved bun warmer receiving the heat from the fire below. pieces of furniture such as chairs and cabinets are marked with a signature “B “. The appreciation and love of wood, so deeply engrained in Randy, is proven by the beauty of his clear oak pine kitchen cabinets which he personally crafted. On the wall hang his grandmother’s treasured copper molds. The working fan in the kitchen is from 1904.
Each bedroom is distinctive. One has Randy’s grandfather’s bed which dates from the 1500’s. Gothic Revival was popular for a short time during the years from 1850 to approximately 1870. Following the Civil War, sadly money was scarce and could not be spent on such finery. There is an English bench from 1830. An early 1400’s coffer (a chest) rests under a window in the main bedroom. The chest came from the Hearst Castle where Randy’s grandmother purchased it at auction at Gimbel’s Department Store in New York. The guest bedroom features a Murphy bed which when closed, displays a stained glass design.
The bathroom fixtures are as intriguing as the rest of the house. The water closet next to the kitchen has an original toilet and plumbing from Union Station dated from the 1920’s. Upstairs, Parker expanded his original bathroom with a pre-1900’s French sink and a functioning “needle shower” which has a multitude of spraying pipes, showering one from all directions. The 1890 shower originally worked from
gravity. A tank of water was on the roof which brought the water down to the shower. When he installed it in the Flora home, the volume and water pressure was not enough to feed the water into the pipes and engineers had to be called in to reconstruct. In 1984, three large historic office buildings (the Title Guaranty, Buder and International buildings) were demolished. Parker salvaged the Italian Carrara marble from the lobby of the International Building and installed same around the door frames, walls and shower stall.
The water closet downstairs is located next to Parker’s retreat, which is affectionately known as Parker’s Pub. In between the pub and the water closet is a stained glass window which features a big spider sitting in a web, which reflects the whimsy of his gothic revival style.
Parker’s Pub is complete with wine closet, stained glass windows, tables, bar and chairs and antique bar fixtures. The heavy bar stools were tooled by his great-grandfather with impressive horse heads on each end of the chair backs. In the same room, a cabinet, also created by Randy’s greatgrandfather, now holds a TV. The wood is a luxurious dark wormy chestnut, with striking intricate carvings.
The house is full of amazing detail. From the toilet paper placed in the old kettle in a bathroom, the brick in the water closet which came from the neighbor’s chimney, to the preCivil War mirror in the foyer or the servant’s call box which was converted into a door bell, Parker’s imprint and pleasant personality and passion are embedded and imprinted in the splendor and artistic excellence of this exceptionally elegant home.ut

From refrigeration to cooktop to Steam oven and more, Thermador’s Masterpiece Series collection embodies precision control and performance in a sophisticated, sleek package. When high-tech meets intuitive, every cook is in complete control. No meat overcooked. No bite less than perfect. Alas, the cook is a dinner party hero.
World? Contemporary? Tuscan? Tudor? Farmhouse? Rustic? Modern? When you visit the designer kitchen showrooms, you’ll be able to see the many different kitchen designs that can help you determine the kitchen style that you’re most comfortable with.
One of the single most important aspects of building a new designer kitchen is to determine a budget. Keep in mind that the kitchen designer you hire needs budget guidelines. Kitchen builders can build virtually any kind of kitchen that you have in mind, from a small galley-type kitchen to a large custom-designed kitchen with all the bells and whistles, but your kitchen designer needs to know the parameters of the project. When you’re having a new kitchen designed, it’s essential to know that all kitchens are custom made, which allows your kitchen designer to work within your budget. If you
want state-of-the-art kitchen appliances such as Thermador, Sub-Zero, Roth, Dacor, Viking and Wolf Appliances, then you need to budget a sufficient amount of money for these luxury appliances.
The type of cabinets, appliances and building materials that you select for your new designer kitchen will depend entirely on the budget that you set. Remember. It’s important to set a realistic budget. What are you willing to compromise on? What’s important to you? It’s about setting priorities. For example, if your top priority is having fine cabinetry, you can consider high-end cabinet brands such as William Ohs, Heritage, Signature, Premier and Wellborn, which are available at Glen Alspaugh Custom Kitchens & Baths, St. Louis’ premier kitchen design firm.
You need to determine the age of everyone

We think that oval swimming pools are especially attractive because they look graceful and elegant. Another swimming pool design option is a lap pool or an exercise pool, which is a long, narrow pool designed for serious swimmers.
From a design standpoint, features that are part of high-end commercial pools are now being added to residential pools. Dramatic features such as waterfalls, lighting effects, water jets, water slides, deck jets, sheer descents, covered grottos, colored lighting, spas and hot tubs, aesthetically pleasing finishes are now becoming the norm for residential pools. The pool designer and the homeowner agree on making the pool an extension of the home and landscaping.
Since building a swimming pool can be expensive, it’s best to get more than one bid from a pool builder. You can also go online and look at the websites of pool builders in your area. Usually, the pool builders will list all of their credentials and explain how they work with their clients. You can also ask the pool builder top show you photographs of some of the pools that they have built. Better yet, ask your pool builder if you can visit the homes where some of the pools are located. That way, you can see first-hand the quality of the pool and this will give you a better idea of what your swimming pool will ultimately look like. It also helps to determine a budget. Once you have decided which pool builder you want to work with, be candid with your pool builder and set parameters. Discuss all the options for your pool and eliminate any extras that aren’t practical or worth the investment.
Most important, you want to build a swimming pool that is consistent with your lifestyle. And, above all, be practical. You can have an attractive swimming pool without having to pay for extras that you won’t use or that will increase your costs.
A beautiful landscape surrounding your swimming pool is essential. Many swimming pools have beautiful wood decks and brick or stone patios surrounding the pools, as well as lush gardens and flowering trees that can provide shade during the hot summer months. Adding attractive pool furniture such as tables and chairs and a few chaise lounges, benches and umbrellas is also an easy way to enhance the look of your swimming pool. Most of the outdoor furniture is weatherproof, durable and sun-resistant so you can leave the furniture outside during the summer months when your swimming pool is in use.
What are you waiting for? Take the plunge and build the pool of your dreams. ut

Spring is my favorite time of year when everything comes alive again, with flowers blooming, birds chirping, and children, adults and their pets playing outdoors.
Farmers' markets and grocery stores have an abundant supply of bright colored vegetables, fresh fruit and fish to nourish our bodies. It’s exhilarating!
For the upcoming holidays - Easter & Passover, consider serving a plate that’s light, fresh and resembles the colors of the rainbow, instead of the usual lamb or brisket? You’ll be smiling, inside and out.
My Salmon Roulade is the perfect dish, stunning and delicious, and prepped a day ahead, leaving time to enjoy your guests. Not an expert at carving fish? Ask your fishmonger, they’ll gladly help. Plus install the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch App– for the best fish - it’s free and handy!
Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day? Scan the QR code for a Homemade Irish Cream recipe that’s budget friendly.
Feel free to email me with any questions regarding these recipes – I’m always happy to help.
Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter and Happy Passover!
gaZPaCho SalSa
• 1 yellow pepper, cored, seeded, cut into 1/8 inch pieces (about ½ cup)
• ½ cucumber, seeded, cut into 1/8 inch pieces (about ½ cup)
• 2 Roma tomatoes, cored, seeded, cut into 1/8 inch pieces (about ½ cup)
• 1 celery rib, cut into 1/8 inch pieces (about ½ cup)
• ½ red onion, minced (about ¼ cup)
• ½ jalapeño chile, stemmed, seeded, and minced
• 1 tbsp. minced fresh cilantro leaves
• ¾ tsp. salt
• ¼ tsp. fresh ground pepper
• 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 tbsp. red wine vinegar
combine ingredients. Refrigerate until ready to use.
(salsa will keep for approx. 4 days).
Cilantro PeSto
• 1 cup chopped cilantro (packed)
• ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
• ¼ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
• 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
• ¼ cup pine nuts
• 1 clove garlic
blend ingredients in food processor. set aside until ready to spread on butterflied salmon.
inStruCtionS:
place salmon on cutting board and carefully butterfly evenly. starting at the long side, make a horizontal cut with a sharp knife; continue to cut within an inch of the opposite side, opening the fillet like a book. do not cut completely through the flesh at the end. once opened like a book, cover surface with plastic wrap. pound evenly but firmly with mallet, over entire surface about ¼-inch thick.
Remove plastic wrap. place parchment paper on counter laying salmon on top, (short edge) closest to you, and top edge of parchment paper. with spatula, spread pesto covering side of salmon facing up, leaving a ½ inch border along both ends.
Using the parchment as a guide, lift edges with salmon, to help make a roll. continue rolling evenly, creating a cylinder. be careful not to roll parchment into the salmon. do not roll too tight – it expands as it cooks, and cannot be too loose, or it will fall apart. Remove salmon roulade from parchment paper, then place on heavy duty foil, shiny side in, rolling up tightly to maintain its shape. twist ends to secure.
Refrigerate roulade for 1 – 24 hours. when ready to cook, preheat oven to 500F degrees. with sharp knife, cut twisted foil ends of roulade, and discard – a bread knife works best. cut roulade in 1/2 (leaving foil in place), then ½ again, creating 4 equal pieces, approximately 2 inches thick. do not remove foil.
with foil intact, place closely, individual roulades upright on a foil lined baking sheet. bake at 5ooF degrees, for approximately 10 minutes in a convection oven, or 15 minutes in a conventional oven - until flesh turns white in color.
to Serve:
ladle gazpacho salsa in center of each plate. set salmon Roulade on top. Remove foil wrapping from around roulade, and serve. enjoy!!!

Sst. Louis’ toP entertainers Anita Rosamond
by Sheila frayne rhoadeS
ongstress Anita Rosamond is one of the hottest entertainers in our town. Her sensational voice and natural charisma attract a following of loyal fans wherever she sings.
Although a native of the St. Louis area, her family (nine children) later moved to Arkansas. “I’m really a country girl at heart,” said Rosamond. She began singing and playing piano at an early age. The talented teenaged Rosamond joined her brother on tour in the Midwest with a contemporary Christian band. Her emerging career brought her to Las Vegas and then Nashville, where she did demo work for various top record labels. “I met a lot of great musicians in Nashville while singing at The Hermitage Hotel, and The Brass Rail in the famous Printer's Alley.” During this time she recorded an album with Roy Orbison's band. In 1990, Anita returned to St. Louis, where she performed at Al Baker’s and Noah’s Ark. Today, she remains a popular draw at local restaurants, cabarets, wineries, and outdoor festivals.
Rosamond has recorded several CDs including "Timeless," "This is Christmas," and "Keep Liftin Me Higher - LIVE!" – a Tribute to the Diva's of the 60's & 70's recorded at Harrah's Casino. Rosamond's "Someone to Watch Over Me” CD was a project for Backstoppers, a local organization that supports families of fallen police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel. She has sung the National Anthem at Cardinals’ games, performed in England and Australia, and in recent years was featured on jazz cruises in the Caribbean, chartered by Jazz Cruises, LLC of Clayton, MO. “On the last cruise, I was honored to sing with well-known artists such as Jane Monheit and Janis Siegel (Manhattan Transfer).”
The versatile Rosamond carries a repertoire of more than 300 songs including classics from the Great American Songbook, smooth jazz, pop, Motown, disco, R&B, rock & roll, country,
gospel, Broadway show tunes and hits from the 50-60 and 70’s. “I enjoy many styles of music allowing me to cater to particular venues and audiences.” Among Rosamond’s favorite all-time singers are Barbara Streisand, Melissa Manchester, Dianne Reeves, Oleta Adams and Donna Summer. A true song stylist, Rosamond skillfully transforms their standards into her own. The multi-talented Rosamond loves to interact with her audiences. Her natural rapport, warmth, and humor bring joy to people wherever she entertains. “I regularly play solo at Il Bel Lago in Creve Coeur and Smitty's in Chesterfield.” Smitty’s offers a fun, Cheers-like environment where local singers and musicians are invited to join in and jam. “I'm allowed to be me, an entertainer, which is what I was born to be. It’s always exciting for me!”
Rosamond also performs with some of our town's finest musicians in her own seven piece band. “Each band member is so amazingly talented.” Rosamond’s band performs at various festivals and fairs in the area, including The Old Webster Jazz & Blues Festival, Big Muddy Blues Festival, Whitaker Music Festival, Webster Art & Air, and KMOX Jazz Festival. "I've been very fortunate to work with so many great musicians, both on recordings and in live performances.”
Whether performing in an intimate venue or before an audience of thousands, Anita Rosamond delivers quite a show! Rosamond, either solo, duo or with her Band, is available for public, corporate and private events including wedding receptions.

what's newlou?
by wendy SChleSinger
Need a new, fun afternoon with the kids or grandkids (and later, without)?
I’ve got a plan without even having to move the car.
Afterwards, with the kids entertained, it’s a fabulous date night out.
Start at Lagoona Magoo Toys (8107 Maryland Ave., Clayton, 314-725-2455, happyupinc.com). This is the toy store you wish you had growing up, or depending on your age, maybe you did. No Barbies or action figures, just pure, active, imaginative fun for the kid in all of us. Their best-selling, colorful Rody horses give the kids so much hopping fun I’ve heard even the Easter Bunny is feeling a little threatened. They come in two sizes, lots of colors, are inflatable to accommodate the rider’s size and can hold up to 100 lbs. For kids from newborns to adults, they carry building toys, skill toys, musical toys and the odd, fun thing you can’t find anywhere else. And the secret is, they’re all educational, but shhhhh don’t tell the kids.
Next it’s off to lunch at any of the wonderful restaurants right on the row. Five Star Burgers and Half and Half, both of which you read about here, are two of my (and my kids’) favorites.
Next, hit up Sweet Boutique (8115A Maryland Ave., Clayton, 314-932-1222, on FB at SweetboutiqueSTL). Perfect for women of all ages and kids too - because they have chocolate! Need I say more? Part confectionery, part gift store, this is the perfect spot to load up that Easter basket (Again with the the Easter Bunny threats?). You’ll find purses and potato chips (chocolate covered of course), Tyler candles and Hammond’s candies, necklaces and nougats. The kids can window shop while you try on bangles and cross off that nagging gift you need for the hostess with the mostess. They have personalized, on the spot, serving pieces, glassware and more. A little something for them, a little something for you. Even the male chocolate lover in your life will appreciate a treat from here.
Now that the kids are on their sugar crash it’s time to start prepping for date night. Get the perfect blow out at BREEZE Blow Dry Bar (9916 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-692-2569, breezeblowdrybar.com) Opened with a fanfare in December, they are masters at updos, blow outs, deep conditioning, fresh face make-up and more. Their modern, elegant surroundings provide a fun, different place to host your next bookclub, Sweet 16 party, or pre-fundraiser fluff fete.
At last it’s time to relax with your lovie, so try Pan D’Olive (1603 McCausland, Richmond Heights, 314-647-8000, pandolivestl.com) for some robust cuisine they describe as “Mediterranean with a California twist.” The small plates menu reads like a Santorini smorgasbord with specialties like; mussels garlic, pan-fried eggplant, lamb kofta slider and phyllo cigars. Dinner entrees range from walnut encrusted trout to lamb shank. Balanced with pastas, greenery and flatbreads, they have something for everyone and are open for both lunch and dinner Mondays through Saturdays.
Hope you have a wonderful day out on the town. And if you’re stuck because you don’t have a sitter for the evening - my daughter can take care of that for you too. We here at Uptown are a full-service operation with suggestions for every aspect of your life. Enjoy! ut
