ren’t you ready for spring to arrive? If you’re like me, you can’t wait to pack away your snow shovel and your winter clothes. As the weather turns warm, we’ll see our friends and neighbors buzzing around town in their convertibles, wearing green to honor St. Patrick’s Day, baking ham and dying eggs for Easter Sunday dinner, oohing and ahhing as the tulips blossom and watch in awe as our lawns magically turn to green.

Our Spring 2014 issue is a very special issue for me because it celebrates Uptown Magazine’s tenth anniversary. When I first began Uptown Magazine, I wanted to create a lifestyle magazine that would offer something for everyone. Over the years, Uptown magazine has evolved into one of St. Louis’ leading lifestyle magazines and we continue to offer must-read articles that will appeal to everyone’s taste.

In this issue, we’re highlighting spring fashion for men and women, bold, beautiful jewelry, spring beauty finds, cool pools, designer kitchens, local entertainers and gourmet food.

We’ll tell you everything that you need to know about Kirkwood and Des Peres, two of St. Louis County’s favorite communities for living, working and shopping.

Our colorful and informative travel article profiles the scenic city of Amsterdam, The Netherlands’ must-visit tourist destination.

If you want to browse through our spring issue, you can read the digital edition online at www.uptownstl.com

We sincerely hope that you enjoy reading Uptown Magazine’s colorful Spring 2014 issue.

SPRING 2014 FASHION TRENDS

The Spring 2014 designer collections make a bold fashion statement with a lively mix of luscious colors such as petal pink, trendy turquoise, vibrant coral and pale green.

Romantic lace in pretty pastel and bold colors is everywhere for Spring 2014 such as Shoshanna’s turquoise lace party dress, embellished with a ruffled hem. You can dress up this chic lace creation with a pair of Kate Spade’s turquoise party pumps. Metallic leather handbags are an important fashion trend for Spring 2014 such as Milly New York’s blue-green iridescent leather clutch, perfect for day or night.

What we like most about the new designer fashion collections for Spring 2014 are the elegant, easy-to-wear dresses designed with luxe fabrics such as Tibi’s coral silk camisole dress. Wear this sexy silk dress with metallic sandals and a metallic clutch and you’re ready for any special occasion.

One of the spring season’s best new looks is Shoshanna’s pastel pink lace shift, the perfect party dress for a touch of evening glamour.

The Spring 2014 fashion trends are all about feminine, flattering silhouettes that you’ll adore wearing day and night such as Tibi’s pale green party dress designed with layers of luxe silk fabric. We suggest adding layers of lustrous white pearls for a dressed-up look.

We think you’ll agree that these designer fashion finds will put you on the best-dressed list for Spring 2014. UT

TThe Crown Jewel of St. Louis

he words YLANG-YLANG (pronounced e-long e-long) evoke a breath of sophistication and elegance, pleasure and romance. The fragrant Indonesian plant has magnificent yellow flowers which take the shape of a brilliant inverted crown. The logo of YLANG-YLANG fine designer jewelry is indeed a crown and the establishment is every bit as alluring as its name. New CEO and President, Julie Ettinger is a beautiful reflection of the spirit and heritage of the store.

Julie’s enthusiastic devotion for YLANG-YLANG began when her parents, Ray and Lois Morganstern opened the boutique in St. Louis in 1985, however, her appreciation for beautiful gems and artistry is no surprise. Julie most likely inherited her passion. Lois owned an estate jewelry business with Julie’s grandmother. When Lois and her husband Ray came upon the YLANGYLANG boutique in Bal Harbour, Florida and were impressed with the European fashion jewelry concept, they bought a franchise from the French owner. In the beginning, Julie, still in high school, wrapped packages and did odd jobs, learning firsthand about the inventory and offering excellent customer service. “After college, I was going to go into pharmaceuticals, but the summer before, I worked at the store selling jewelry and I loved it so much.” Julie states. Her mother was the buyer for the store and shared her expertise in choosing the

perfect unique designer jewelry. Surrounded by luxurious gems, the quality and feel of artisan designs of the silver, gold and platinum, she found her own passion in jewelry retail. NEW AND EXCITING CHANGES ARE COMING VERY SOON FOR YLANG-YLANG! Lois has happily handed the symbolic crown to Julie! From years of experience, love and dedication, Julie has her own clear vision of YLANG YLANG’s future. Julie has the perfect graphic designer who has updated the YY logo, which is soon to be unveiled! We are announcing even more BIG news! YLANGYLANG will have a change of location summer 2014. For almost 30 years, the store has been located in Plaza Frontenac but in the summer, the boutique will be moving to a freestanding, more personal location, The Colonial Marketplace on Ladue Road by I70 Interbelt. You won’t find simply a

doors leading to a patio for relaxing conversation. The scheme is “French Chic” with gold, aqua, whites and greys. The goal is to create a welcoming, creative, inspirational experience as well as a destination. The space will be perfect for the “trunk shows” where internationally known jewelry designers appear to display their newest work and can take custom orders personally.

Julie now relishes her new role as buyer, traveling globally in her search to find uncommon, amazing designs and designers with inventory representing all parts of the world such as Robert Procop in Los Angeles, Lika Bahar from Istanbul, Pomellato from Italy, Heather Moore, Todd Reed and Single Stone just to mention a few. Lois and Julie have a genuine sensitivity which reflects in certain collections with pieces celebrating the events in our lives. Photo lockets and bracelets can reflect our memories and romances. Creativity mixed with artistry and sentiment abound as your secret messages in your own words are tooled to last forever. Handprints or the actual handwriting of a loved one can be crafted flawlessly on a charm,

quest to find the answer to healing autism, a condition which the family has personally experienced with Julie’s sister. She also has designed a “paw” collection to benefit animal rights support groups.

In fact, over the years, Julie and Lois have extended their goodwill though involvement in the world of charity which will continue to grow in support of the community.

YLANG-YLANG specializes in unique, eclectic “can’t find anywhere else” jewelry. Julie tells of a couple who

with each bride’s personal preferences, whether contemporary or antique, they will work with you to create that one of a kind first time ring or 25th anniversary ring.

beauty

S{pring’s balmy, breezy weather means a return to a softer, gentler look with pale pink shades for lips, nails and cheeks. Bronzing powder for a sun-kissed glow all over your face and body is trending now for spring. Big beauty news for Spring 2014 are pastelcolored eye shadows in luscious colors such as aqua blue, pink and lavender. Fresh floral fragrances are also on trend for spring.

{ TRENDS

{ } {3}
SPRING

Lips for spring will be luscious when you’re wearing Clinique’s Long-Last Lipstick in Watermelon, a luscious shade of vibrant pink.

Less is more when you’re making up your eyes. We suggest mascara and a gentle dusting of a pastel-colored eye shadow. A must have for beautiful eyes this spring is Clinique’s All About Shadow in a heavenly shade of aqua blue called Pacific Coast.

Now that the outdoor season has arrived, you’ll want to add a bronzer to your beauty routine. We suggest Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick bronzing powder, the natural way to give your face and body a shimmering natural glow.

Pink-lacquered nails are an important beauty trend for

Spring 2014. We especially like Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Narcissist, a pretty pale pink shade that complements spring’s pastel-colored fashion.

Trending now for spring are fresh floral fragrances such as Estee Lauder’s White Linen. You’ll adore this lush floral fragrance, an elegant blend of Bulgarian Rose, Violet and Orris Blossoms.

Another must have for beautiful skin is Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge in spring’s most-wanted color, pale pink. This easyto-apply cheek rouge will give your face just a subtle hint of color that looks like a natural blush.

We’re certain that these spring beauty essentials will give you the fresh, natural look that you desire for spring. UT

EVICTING UNWANTED

It is virtually impossible to avoid toxins altogether since we are perpetually exposed to them through the air that we breathe, the food we consume, the water we drink, and the products that we use. We know these toxins are capable of wrecking havoc on our bodies, and since there is no way to avoid them, we must find effective ways to remove them from the body on a continuous basis. Making a few simple changes to your daily routine can help your body’s innate toxin removal systems function at an optimal level.

The Human body is equipped with a variety of processes for toxin removal. The Lymphatic System removes larger toxins, while smaller toxins are passed on to the veins. Some of these smaller toxins are removed when we exhale, while others pass into to the digestive tract by way of the liver for final clearance, or they are made water-soluble in the liver, and are passed to the kidneys and excreted in urine. Unfortunately, environmental pollution, lack of sleep, illness, invasive medical procedures, and even excessive exercise can interfere with the body’s ability to effectively remove the toxins that we encounter each day. The tips below suggest ways that you can help assist the body in eliminating these toxins.

When it comes to deciding whether to go organic, the answer lies in the peel. If you eat the peel, skin, or the outside of the food in question, then choosing organic will help to reduce the amount of toxins you ingest.

This next way to detox will probably come as a pleasant surprise. Go ahead and schedule that massage. We all know

that a deep-pressure rubdown is a great way to unwind during stressful times. Not only is a massage great for calming down. Massaging pressure points throughout the body provides an additional opportunity for toxins to be removed. For the best results, be sure to drink plenty of water to help flush toxins out of your body after a massage.

In fact, when it comes to water, you should probably increase your intake overall, since proper hydration is guaranteed to help carry toxins out of the body. In addition to water, up your fiber intake by eating more fiber rich foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes and whole grains. As previously stated, if you consume the skin or the peel, buying organic is your best bet. When considering types of fruits and vegetables to incorporate into your diet, add a bit of color. If you are looking to target toxins, blue, purple, and red fruits and vegetables (think blueberries, blackberries, plums, beets and eggplant, just to name a few) get their rich hues from anthocyanins, which are believed to have antioxidant properties. Try adding three colors to at

least two meals a day. Chances are, you will gradually begin to notice a difference in your overall health

While excessive exercise may be as harmful to the body as prolonged inactivity, getting moderate exercise on a regular basis can help assist the detoxification process. When we exercise, a process called Autophagy occurs. Toxins accumulate in our cells, but when Autophagy occurs, the cells break toxins down and convert them into energy.

Our bodies are innately equipped to process and remove toxins, but in order to keep these processes running at their peak level, we must be cognizant of what we are inhaling and ingesting every day, and seek out ways to minimize our exposure to toxins by using products that are safer for the environment, avoiding second hand smoke when possible, and buying organic fruits, vegetables and other products. We must also be diligent about getting proper amounts of sleep, exercise, and antioxidant rich foods. A few simple changes to your lifestyle- that is all it takes to help your body ward off toxins as quickly as they enter. UT

While sitting over a glass of wine one evening at D’Vine Wine, I made a comment to my wife about how this space would make a great little restaurant. At the time, I never dreamed it would be a possibility for us. When the opportunity did present itself, being huge Tapas fans, my wife and I decided to put our spin on the Tapas scene in St. Louis and bring Tapas to Kirkwood.

One 19 North Tapas and Wine Bar is the result of lots of research, hard work, and above all, a labor of love. We hope our place becomes the place many people choose to share special moments. designed for modern living

o matter the occasion, people seem drawn to the heart of the home – the kitchen. Modern kitchens are planned as full living spaces for cooking, working and relaxing. We asked several kitchen design companies how they incorporate layout, design and functionality in the most important room in the house.

Katie Diprimo, showroom manager at Alspaugh Kitchen & Bath, commented on current kitchen trends. “The combination of whites, neutrals and grays with a high contrast dark element is very popular. Open floor plans with warm contemporary style are gaining popularity. Emphasis is placed on the use of natural materials and natural light. Incorporating both living and entertaining spaces sets kitchen style for 2014.”

As example, Diprimo used Alspaugh’s kitchen design called Stainless Sleek. “Lustrous stainless steel and black roast walnut cabinetry balance flawlessly in this stylish contemporary kitchen. Designed for increased efficiency, two islands provide better traffic flow and create delineated work areas. Stainless steel doors were designed above the double ovens to create a tower of stainless steel, offsetting the stainless steel refrigerator anchored on the opposite end of the wall. Frosted glass, with light diffusion properties similar to stainless steel, was used in framed inserts and in light pendants over the larger island.”

Presenting a stunning makeover done by National Kitchen & Bath. Designer Kim Feld commented on their client’s new kitchen. “2014 trends lean toward a neutral palette using various shades of grey, clear glass, stainless, and wood. All these aspects are found throughout this kitchen.”

Feld said that the project involved re-envisioning a classic black and white kitchen. “While trends come and go, this kitchen will hold up and perform for a long time.” Feld pointed out that accessories, seating, artwork and wall color can easily be changed to keep the space feeling fresh.”

This modern kitchen features transitional cabinetry by Brookhaven and hardware styling with clean lines. Feld said, ”It’s contemporary, but softened with warm touches in the flooring and the accessories, as well as materials and colors visually brought in from the adjoining spaces.” The kitchen opens to the main living area. “It's a sophisticated and comfortable social space, lending itself to interaction with family and guests.”

This kitchen’s design features allow the eye to move through the space, finally resting on an artistic focal point. What could be a long and narrow kitchen has been transformed into a dynamic living area.

Herzog Kitchen & Bath designers see multi finish kitchens, shades of grey, and decorative glass tiles for kitchens in 2014. These trends are beautifully demonstrated in this award winning kitchen shown here.

Custom designed columns in black dramatically flank the kitchen’s entrance. In addition, they conveniently serve as lighted display cabinets. Herzog designers then opened up and enlarged a typical galley kitchen by implementing space saving Dura Supreme Cabinetry in white. The kitchen feels larger because the covered appliances blend so well together. Pewter grey accents show up in the wall tile, countertops and appliances. Functional additions include a French door refrigerator, and a cherry wood floating countertop. A movable island is also designed to tuck under the countertop if needed. This kitchen definitely provides a place for everything!

re you dreaming of a cool blue swimming pool to grace your backyard? If you’re a trendsetter, build a dramatic-looking swimming pool with a vanishing edge. If you’re a serious swimmer, you can opt to build a long narrow lap pool. Or, perhaps your vision of the ultimate swimming pool is a fun-to-swim-in free-form swimming pool that’s cutting-edge, contemporary and totally unique.

Whatever swimming pool design that you choose, keep in mind that building a swimming pool can be pricey, so we suggest that you get more than one bid. You can also go online and look at the websites of pool builders in your area. Usually, the pool builders will list their credentials and explain how they work with their clients. Quite often, the pool builders will feature the pools that they have built on their websites. Better yet, ask your pool builder if you can visit the homes where some of the pools are located. That way, you can see firsthand the quality of the pool and this will give you a better idea of what your swimming pool will ultimately look

like. It also helps to determine a budget. Once you have decided which pool builder you want to work with, be candid with your pool builder and set parameters. Discuss all the options for your swimming pool and eliminate any extras that aren’t practical or worth the investment.

Most important, you want to build a swimming pool that is designed to be consistent with your lifestyle and the style of your home.

Most important, you want to build a swimming pool that is designed to be consistent with your lifestyle and the style of your home. For example, if you have a traditional home and a family-oriented lifestyle, you might want to consider a traditional rectangular swimming pool with a brick terrace and cast aluminum pool furniture. If your lifestyle and your home is casual and contemporary, you’ll probably be interested in a more modern swimming pool such as a kidney-shaped surrounded by a modern wood deck. For a more formal look, you can have an elegant rectangular pool surrounded by pavers or bricks. Above all, be practical. You can have an attractive swimming pool without having to pay for all of the bells and whistles that you won’t use or that will increase the cost of your pool.

Another option with your swimming pool is to build a pool house to complement your swimming pool. There

are many pre-fabricated pool house designs that you can order online that will enhance your swimming pool and provide you with storage space for your pool equipment, an entertainment area and a place where your family and guests can change from their clothes into their swimsuits.

We think that a beautiful landscape surrounding your swimming pool is essential. You can have beautiful wood decks and brick or stone patios surrounding the pools, as well as lush flower gardens and trees that can provide shade during the hot summer months. Adding attractive pool furniture such as a cast aluminum table and chairs, a colorful outdoor umbrella, and white Adirondack chaise lounges is an easy way to enhance the look of your swimming pool. Most of the outdoor furniture is weatherproof, durable and sun-resistant so you can leave the furniture outside during the summer months when your swimming pool is in use.

What are you waiting for? Take the plunge and build a cool pool that you, your family and your friends will enjoy all summer long. UT

The Netherlands:

MORE THAN AMSTERDAM!

The mere mention of The Netherlands invokes visions of canals, wooden shoes, women’s’ pointed hats and tulips. The most well-known city to visit is the capitol, Amsterdam, which has the reputation of a very freethinking, progressive and extremely innovative city.

38 | UPTOWN MAGAZINE

Two of the world’s most renowned art museums, the Rijksmuseum which features Rembrandt’s art and the Van Gogh Museum are both filled with famous masterpieces. This is also the city of Ann Frank’s house, fashionable stores and the infamous red light section of town. However, to only visit this one city in this unique country full of sights and attractions, is a regretful mistake for this small country is brimming full of beautiful, charming cities, villages, and

towns, with claims of fame and points of interests that would please any traveler. There is so much more to The Netherlands than Amsterdam.

While the Netherlands is indeed the proper name of the country, many people call it “Holland” which actually refers to a small portion of the country but has now become interchangeable with the proper term “The Kingdom of The Netherlands”.

To the north and west of the Netherlands is the North Sea. A simple ferry ride or car ride to Calais, France lands you in England. To the east is Germany and to the west lay France and Belgium. The Netherlands is so small (about twice the size of the state of New Jersey) that travel to any of the border countries is never more than three hours away therefore travel within the Netherlands is convenient with great highways and easy- to- ride trains.

Take a drive to Den Hague which hosts embassies, consulates, historical sights and royalty. The nickname of “the international city of peace

and justice” is due to the over 150 international organizations striving for peace in the world. Check out the fascinating miniature interactive park called Madurodam which portrays the history of Holland as well as the unique modern architecture and water control which makes The Netherlands the master country of engineering. Enjoy the Hague Market which is the biggest outdoor market in Europe.

Not far from Den Hague is the city of Delft, the home of that lovely white pottery, hand painted in blue. The enchanting city center is reminiscent of the Grand Place in Brussels (only much smaller) and has the perfect amount of shops, canals, restaurants and churches. The New Church is the burial place of the famous Dutch painter Vermeer, Anthony van Leeuwenhoek (the “Father of Microbiology”) and William of Orange, who was the leader of the Dutch who fought for freedom from the Spanish and died in 1584.

On the western side of the Netherlands, cities such as Utrecht and Arnhem offer their own unique personalities. Utrecht is a university town with picturesque canals lined with pubs, stores and cafes. This is the home of the Utrecht University, the largest university in the Netherlands. It has a bit of a Parisian feel with art students, street music and the inevitable hundreds of bicycles. In fact, wherever you go in the Netherlands, you see bicycles. The land is flat and the Dutch folks bike to stores, workplaces and schools.. (NOTE: If renting a car, remember, bikers have the right of way!)

Arnhem is awesome. The Burger Zoo is the perfect size and features open air monkeys swinging through the trees, a great desert display and realistic presentations of animals. The Open Air Museum and National Heritage Museum are not to be missed. With authentic, old thatched roofed Dutch buildings, windmills,

shops, playground, and endless things to do and see, this park is one of the best tourist attractions in Holland and off the beaten path. About two miles away from Arnhem in the small town of Oosterbeek is the Airborne Museum “Hartenstein” which is located in a hotel that was used by the Polish and British army during World War II. The Battle of the Bridge of Arnhem and Operation Market Garden (made famous by the movie “A Bridge Too Far) are honored here with interactive activities, mementos and artifacts. The lowest level of the building is believably “real” and impressive with the intense sights and sounds of battle in the award-winning Airborne Experience exhibition.

Decorate Cupcakes Like a Pro

CLASSIC VANILLA BUTTERCREAM

VickiBensinger

Makes 6 – 6 1/2 cups of frosting or 24 cupcakes

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 sticks unsalted butter

• 8 cups ( 2 lb.) powdered sugar

VickiBensinger

at home with In-Home Culinary Classes

When I was a little girl it was always a thrill to walk into a bakery and select a beautiful cupcake decorated with icing. I use to think it was magical the way the icing would swirl creating designs that were so inviting. It never occurred to me that I could duplicate those myself until I was older.

You don’t have to be creative to design a cupcake, cookie or cake. In fact, with a simple pastry tip and pastry bag you too can look like a professional baker.

With St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and Passover coming up why not wow your family and friends with a special treat. Bake up your favorite cupcakes or use a box mix, then top each with a lovely iced rose to create a bouquet of roses. Whip up a batch of buttercream icing colored to suit your occasion, or if you’re not a baker, use the frosting in a can – that works too! You’ll be amazed at how talented you are.

Here’s how to do it…….

Start by making your favorite cupcake, cake or cookie recipe and frosting. I like using a classic buttercream frosting to top many of my cakes. Here’s a simple recipe that anyone can make:

• 2 tsp. vanilla, use clear imitation vanilla if you like a whiter frosting

• 1/3 c. milk

• pinch of salt if you’d like to cut the sweetness

DIRECTIONS:

1. Cream softened butter until smooth.

2. Blend in the vanilla.

3. Add half of the powdered sugar and half of the milk. Beat at medium speed until powdered sugar is incorporated. Add remaining powdered sugar and milk and beat until texture becomes smooth.

4. Optional: If desired add color using Liqua-Gel coloring (found at bakery supply stores or craft stores like Michaels).

*Buttercream can be frozen in air tight container for at least three months. Thaw on countertop.

Now let’s create a beautiful rose for your treat of choice. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Icing bag (I use disposable ones) or zip-lock baggie

• Coupler

• Open Star Pastry Tip (I use Wilton 1M)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Cut tip of pastry bag and add coupler and open star tip.

2. Add icing, then twist top of bag and squeeze icing out to insure there are no air pockets.

3. Position star tip in the center of your cupcake and squeeze releasing some icing.

4. In one continuous motion continue squeezing the icing bag swirling from center

5. to outer edge in a counter clockwise motion until you’ve covered the cake with icing.

Using this method the folds of the frosting lay over each other forming a perfect looking rose. If desired, lightly dust the frosting with some pearls or sanding sugar, and your rose will sparkle. Alternatively start on the outer edge swirling to the center for a fancy swirl.

ST. LOUIS’ TOP ENTERTAINERS Kim Massie

THE LADY SINGS THE BLUES AND SO MUCH MORE

ust mention her name, and she’s instantly recognized. Kim Massie is beloved by fans of all ages for both her singing and personal warmth onstage and off. Massie doesn’t consider herself a blues diva. “I‘m more versatile than that.” she said. Her vast repertoire includes jazz, rock, pop, country, gospel and R&B. “Over the years, I’ve sung all kinds of music, from Motown to most everything else. I’m a songstress, an entertainer. I don’t like to be pin holed into any one genre.”

Massie delights her fans by singing hits of her favorite singers like Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Luther Vandross. and yes, even Barry Manilow! “I always ask the audience for songs they want me to sing. They are actually surprised that I know pop and rock songs.”

Kim has shared the stage with many greats including Johnnie Johnson, Jeanne Trevor, Chuck Berry, Bennie Smith and J.R. Reed. She opened for Cindi Lauper during On the Levee’s 4th of July event in 2007. “Afterwards, Cindi asked me to sing “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” with her. That was unforgettable.” She’s performed for organizations such as Major League Baseball, Purina, Boeing, and at the Missouri History Museum and the Big Muddy Blues Festival. She makes frequent appearances at blues dance events and festivals coast to coast. Last June at the Missouri Botanical Garden, Massie broke a record with an audience of 13,000. Massie is a regular performer with her band the Solid Senders at her favorite venue Beale on Broadway.

Oliver Sain to occasionally let me sit in with his band at BB’s. I was just at the right place at the right time.” She began to sing there weekly, eventually meeting Bud Jostes, owner of Beale on Broadway. Jostes hired her to sing with a new band, the Solid Senders. The rest is history. Massie attracted huge crowds to every performance, and ten years later, she still does.

Massie earned two Best Female Vocalist of the Year Awards from the Riverfront Times and a Grand Center Visionary Award in 2005. She starred in The Black Rep’s 2003 production of “It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues".

Born in St. Louis, she later moved with her family to Lorain, Ohio. There she grew up on gospel music. “Until I was 14, that’s all there was for me. I remember listening to everything on the radio, from Motown to the Beatles, I loved it all.” She became a single mother, working to support her three children. Through hard times, she never lost her dream to someday sing professionally. ”I always wanted to sing for a living.” In 1992, she discovered karaoke - the necessary breakthrough to display her natural talent. “I could sing anything I wanted.” Massie even won some karaoke contests, building her confidence even more. Later on, she briefly sang with a live band. “ I could be more creative and sing as long as I wanted.”

After 33 years in Ohio, Massie relocated to the St. Louis area in 1999. While still working a 9-5 job, she’d sit in at the 1860’s Hardshell Saloon and BB’s Jazz, Blues & Soups. ”I had to get back to singing, so I asked the great saxophonist

Massie knows firsthand how St. Louis artists support each other. Last August she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and endured a thyroidectomy. While recovering, her son Adam Massie put together a benefit concert for her at The Sheldon. Denise Thimes, Anita Jackson, Roland Johnson, Eric “Guitar” Davis and others rallied round Massie. “The out pouring of love and support was explosive.” Today Massie is better than ever and back at Beale every Tuesday and Thursday night.

Massie’s CD list includes live recordings “A Diva Survival Guide” at Beale in 2001, Jazz at the Bistro, a tribute to Aretha Franklin recorded at Finale, and her latest “Inspire”. Yes, Massie’s story is truly inspirational. “Never give up on a dream. I want to share that by mentoring young girls. It’s so needed.” UT

FUEL Strength and Wellness Studio

Fuel offers an experience unlike that at any other “gym”. That is likely because FUEL is more than a gymit is a complete wellness program. If you’re looking to maximize the benefits of a wellness program, but you are unsure of where to begin, look no further than FUEL Strength and Wellness Studio, where unprecedented personalization is standard. This is not a 24hour one-size-fits-all fitness center! Before clients can begin a customized training plan, they undergo thorough analysis of their overall health. A bio-sig/body fat analysis detects any hormonal imbalances, allowing the lifestyle coaches to design a dietary and supplementation plan to assist in overall health. Postural and movement assessment helps coaches determine the most effective fitness program, with the least risk for injury. Lifestyle plans for health and wellness are created for each client based on the results of a variety of assessments. In fact, the motto at FUEL is “if you’re not assessing, you’re just guessing. Individual and small group training and stretching sessions are scheduled by the clients, rather than offered at specific times. Regardless of your financial circumstances, the demands of your daily life, your age, gender, or current level of fitness, FUEL’s wellness coaches will work with YOU and for YOU to help you live your life to the fullest.
