The most colorful fashion and accessories for Summer 2012 have arrived.
By ROByn WaLKeR
We think that you’ll be ecstatic about the sophisticated clothes and accessories that are in style for summer. This season, the fashion collections focus on bold, bright color. You’ll see amazing collections of chic designer dresses in styles from short to long.
You’ll adore the pretty skirts and shorts in bright colors, plus many styles of cropped pants. You can pair these skirts, pants and shorts with lace and silk tank tops, sexy sandals, high-impact jewelry and totes. For a more dramatic look this summer, we suggest mixing colors together such as combining fuschia with green and orange with red.
We especially like the summer fashion designs from halogen such as these wear-with-everything fuschia cropped pants paired with a luxe chartreuse silk tank top from nordstrom.
Marc by Marc Jacobs lace tank top and neon orange shorts make a bold fashion statement.

Through decades of fashion, the hat has prevailed as a must-have piece de resistance. A faceflattering hat can instantly add a touch of old hollywood glamour, protect the delicate skin of the scalp and face from the sun, and tame unruly tresses in a matter of seconds.
Whether you're headed to the Derby, or relaxing on the beach, with so many options to choose from this season, you can surely find a hat to top off that oh-so-perfect summer sundress or bathing suit.
Just visit any boutique or department store and you will find a variety of fedoras, porkpies, and wide-brimmed hats to choose from.
Additionally, with the summer fast approaching, the future is looking so bright; you've got to wear shades. Keep your peepers protected from the sun in style. With an ever-increasing selection of sunglasses seen on the runways and at retailers, there is a style to fit every face shape.
RIGHT: KaTe SPaDe neW yORK BOW HaT avaILaBLe aT WWW nORDSTROm.COm
This season, prints and pops of color are ruling the runways. Patterned frames and boldly colored frames can be seen everywhere. From animal prints, to twotone frames, to geometric designs, you will earn major style points by adding an unexpected pop to your look with patterned or colored frames.
When selecting sunglasses, you should also look for a frame design that will flatter your unique face shape. The Frames Direct Website, and the Lens Crafters Website provide the following helpful advice for finding the perfect frames for your facial structure.
If your face is square shaped (angular with a strong jaw line, broad forehead, square chin, and proportional in length and width), try a pair of oval or round frames.
If your face is oval shaped (mostly balanced proportions, chin is a bit narrower than forehead, and cheekbones are high), your best bet is a pair of taller frames.
If your face is round (full cheeks, rounded chin and few angles), sharpedged rectangular, and horizontal frames will lengthen and add angles. If your face is heart shaped (broad forehead, with wide cheekbones that narrow to a smaller chin), bottom heavy frames and styles with low-set temples will help to add width to the lower face. www. framesdirect.com and www. lenscrafters.com
Go ahead and cap off your summer look. This spring and summer, keep your cool, with haute hats and stunning sunglasses. uT

MEN's gOLfwEAR the best new looks in
By ROByn WaLKeR
What will golfers be wearing when they’re teeing off on their favorite golf courses? Men who play serious golf will be wearing the mostwanted looks in golf wear, which are colorful cotton knit polo shirts and white cotton shorts and pants. Cotton is a luxurious fabric because it’s durable and soft to the touch. It also helps to keep you feeling cooler when you’re playing golf in the hot summer sun.
One of our favorite men’s golf wear collections is from Vineyard Vines. Vineyard Vines makes preppy-style clothing that combines high quality with traditional styling. You can shop online at Vineyard Vines’ website, www.vineyardvines.com.
Another great men’s wear brand is southern t ide, which is available at Kim Keuhner Men’s store in Ladue. A must-have for golfers is a southern t ide cotton knit polo shirt such as this eye-catching skipjack pink polo shirt, which looks outstanding when you pair it with a pair of khaki or white golf shorts. You can also shop online for the southern t ide collection at www. southerntide.com .
One of the leading names in men’s wear is robert talbott, available at Woody’s and Mister Guy. We especially like the robert talbott cotton knit polo shirts and the yarn dyed cotton shorts, which are perfect to wear on the golf course. Visit the robert talbott website at www.roberttalbott. com to see the collection. Our favorite robert talbott look is this denim blue cotton polo with woven collar paired with neutral cotton shorts in a wear-with-everything shade called “stone”. When you want to look and feel as good as the golf that you play, wear these fine quality designer shorts and polo shirts from robert talbott, Vineyard Vines and southern t ide. uT

If you haven’t experienced the thrill of driving a luxury car, it’s definitely worth your time to visit the luxury car dealerships in st. Louis to learn the benefits of driving a luxury car and to take a test drive.

Luxury car brands such as Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, range rover, and Cadillac come with all of the bells and whistles such as multi-contour seats, sun roofs, retractable tops, alloy wheels, and navigation systems __ and they offer not only instant status appeal, but unsurpassed driving performance.
If price is a factor in your decision to buy or lease a luxury car, you can always opt for a lower-end make and model that comes without as many of the frills and extras.
BMW, the immensely popular European automaker, manufactures the ultimate driving machine. BMW’s are available in a broad range of various makes and models that appeal to most car buyers, whatever their lifestyle, taste and budget happens to be. A BMW owner recently told me that he drives a BMW because it has “drivability“. he explained, “With a BMW, you drive the car, the car doesn’t drive you. ”
If you want the thrill of a lifetime, consider owning or leasing a Porsche, the premier luxury sports car. Porsche is world famous for its superb engineering. two st. Louis dealers, Plaza Motors and Parktown Porsche-Audi, are ready to show you the benefits of driving a Porsche such as the Classic Porsche 911.
One of the leading luxury car brands is Mercedes-Benz. An example of Mercedes Benz automotive excellence is the collection of Mercedes-Benz sL-Class cars. The luxurious Mercedes-Benz roadsters have sculpted exteriors and 18inch alloy wheels. Classic side gills evoke the sL’s Gull wing heritage. The engines perform with awesome power—and the retractable hardtop roof is legendary.
If you’re uninspired with mass-produced, middle-of-theroad cars and you’re in the market for a superbly-built luxury car, my advice is to visit one of st. Louis’ leading luxury car dealers such as tri-star, Plaza Motor Company, Parktown Porsche-Audi, Progress Pointe, Bentley, and Autohaus
Most luxury car dealers also have pre-owned makes and models which can save you a substantial amount of money. Leasing is another option and there are many special leasing packages. A fast and easy way to know what’s on the luxury car market is to look at the luxury car inventories that are posted on most luxury car dealers’ websites. Whether you buy a luxury car or lease one, there are many choices available so you’re destined to find a luxury car that will inspire you , enhance your lifestyle—and provide you with an extraordinary driving experience. uT

an outsider's insider's view
&
By WenDy SCHLeSInGeR
frontenac : ladue
Ididn’t grow up in St. Louis but I’ve lived here most of my life and with no plans of leaving, I’ve come to call it home. Eight of the twenty five years I’ve lived in St. Louis, I’ve spent in Ladue, so I guess that makes me an Outsider/Insider.
When I first moved to Ladue (after brief stints in five other St. Louis area towns) I felt a little out of place with it’s reputation of wealth and old money status. After all, I’m a girl whose personal motto is “Any day I’m wearing hiking boots must be a good day.” Not exactly country club material. But I have to say the people are varied, warm and friendly and any surprise reaction to that is strictly my fault for having been sucked in to the reputation.
Ladue and Frontenac are towns dotted with country clubs, multimillion dollar mansions, and even a few horse stables. Some of the wealthiest St. Louisans call it home yet there are also intimate neighborhoods with homes in the two to three hundred thousand dollar range. The school district is one of the best in the state with one of the most diverse student bodies you’ll find anywhere. It’s a safe community where people aren’t fearful if they forget to lock their house or car, and the location can’t be beat. Adjacent to major highways, ten minutes from the airport, fifteen minutes from downtown, it also has an abundance of shopping, restaurants and an upscale hotel right in town.
I used to feel a bit intimidated by the stores on Clayton Road. I thought they were too chi-chi for my budget and background but having visited them on several occasions in both personal and professional capacities that feeling was quashed the minute I set foot in the store. These are some the of the friendliest people you can meet. The selections are always interesting and believe it or not, there are bargains to be had. Some people refer to this neighborhood of stores as the Rodeo Drive of St. Louis. I think of it more as an elegant Mayberry. It’s really just a small, in some ways old-fashioned, town where you can still put things on account, get advice on how to fix your door, find the ideal gift for everyone from your Uncle Fred to your niece’s christening and top it off with the perfect Burger and Bloody Mary. So as an insider (with an outsider’s frame of reference) allow me to take you on a tour of some of my favorite spots around town.
SHOPPING
Two of my favorite clothing boutiques are Giddy Up Jane and MACs Designs. The owners are fun, friendly, a joy to talk with and have a great selection. Giddy Up Jane carries stylish western apparel that you don’t have to live in Montana to pull off. Owner Jane Lavey, started with her vintage, handmade belt buckles and has grown from there, recently expanding her shop to double its size.
My purchases from MACS Designs always get me compliments. I found some unique tops in the $20 range suitably stylish for a woman my age and in the store at the same time were some teenagers searching for dresses for dances. Odd but true! She just has a really nice collection of things for girls of all ages. And she monograms.

Other favorites for friendliness, style and unique selections I just don’t see other places are Athena, Mister Guy, Vie and Roberts Boys and Mens. Athena specializes in highfashion from Greece that is comfortable yet chic. Mister Guy is more on the conservative side and has wardrobe staples with style. Their client base ranges from teenagers on up. Vie tends to the trendy but they’re the kind of clothes you wear again and again and they have killer sales. roberts Fine Apparel for Men and Boys is fabulous especially if you have kids. They provide lifetime alterations so those school uniforms can last for several kids and will save you money in the long run. In business since 1947, clearly they’re doing something right.
savvy surroundings’ owner Pamela Calvert is my style icon. she’s always impeccably dressed, in a casual upscale way, befitting the home decor and design store she’s created. I’d describe her accessories as artistically eclectic, and much more affordable than I would have thought. she can design your entire home, outfit a room, or provide you with a quick little hostess gift for as little as $5.
If your tastes run to the more traditional, teddy Karl at The Great Cover-Up is your man. While he’s a master at design for any style he is best known for his extensive wallpaper selection in all price ranges, and his intricate, hand-made, self-designed throw pillows. he too has wonderful gift items for hostesses and housewarmings.

For a new do, or a new you, go to Tymm’s Place. This relatively new salon is full of the friendliest and most welcoming staff. From tymm herself, who takes the stunning photographs in the lobby, to nahmee who does a blow out that lasts three days and is the best I’ve ever had, to Jessica who does facials, peels, waxing, and laser hair treatments, this is a place where my whole family feels comfortable.
The cumulative we of Ladue and Frontenac rely on schnarr’s Hardware store as the go to spot for answers, advice and solutions on any of our household projects. A throwback to the past, they have actual people who are available, knowledgeable and happy to answer any question. They’ll even recommend a handy man if the project is out of your comfort zone. It smells and feels like a hardware store should and you may discover some of the items are half the price you find at the big box stores.
Ladue Pharmacy delivers! need I say more? And not just the prescriptions - balloons, last-minute gifts, even the liquor - you name it they will complete your overlooked details. With a broad gift selection they’re like a five and dime drugstore gift boutique all rolled into one. And the post office is in the back. Who knew? It’s a modern day General store with very appreciative service.
It’s hard to miss Ladue Market in the spring with it’s colorful display of plants and flowers. People swear by them. Even though they may be slightly more expensive, they bloom more fully and last longer. Inside they carry a selection of local foods, (Jerry will help you pull together a selection to take to out of town guests) last minute staples, and a butcher shop that will even pack your ribs for shipping. Dating back to 1928, this st. Louis landmark takes phone orders and still honors house accounts.

brands such as Aveda, Bumble & bumble, and Matrix, we are fortunate to be able to benefit from her expertise.
Even though I seem to be describing a small town we are also host to the Hilton st. Louis Frontenac Hotel. Offset by a stunning three story greenhouse atrium entry, inside you’re treated to the French influenced lobby with twin curved stairways. The hotel features a 10,000 square foot ballroom, a variety of suites and guest rooms and has all the amenities you desire including a fitness room, pool, barber shop, local transportation and even a shoe shine stand.

I’m rather particular about my restaurants - especially if I’m recommending them. The food should be consistently good, and the service prompt and friendly. And if something does go wrong as inevitably will, just apologize. not too much to ask. so here are my picks for the area.
You just can’t go wrong with sportman’s Park. The abundance of st. Louis sports memorabilia give it ambiance, the food (burgers- voted best in st. Louis, salads, sandwiches) is always good, the service friendly, and they make a decent Bloody Mary. It ranks high with all the members of my family which is why it’s at the top of my list.
Frontenac Grill has talayna’s pizza! If you know what that means that’s all I need to say. If you don’t, let me explain. This is deep dish pizza with just the right proportion of sauce to ingredients with a sturdy but slightly sweet crust that’s as good as the rest of the pie, maybe better. With apologies to Pi, because I love their pizza as well, and with a husband from Chicago (home of the original deep dish) I still have to rank this as the best deep dish. And they have dancing! Casual dancing with songs you know and love where you can unashamedly dance with your girlfriend if hubby needs to watch the end of the inning. There’s a large bar, roomy booths, an extensive menu, and a friendly, lively atmosphere.
For a slightly fancier, but reasonably priced dining experience try sugo’s. This is Italian food in an Italian setting that’s worth going back to again and again. Problem is everyone else must feel that way too because it’s so popular it’s sometimes hard to get in. On my visit, the food was fantastic, the service helpful, and I loved the murals and open air dining option.
Part elegant restaurant, part neighborhood bar, Truffles is the kind of place you can pop in for a burger - and even split it - or have a fine dining experience with a rack of lamb, porterhouse steak for two, or dover sole. They boast a new chef, Brandon Benack, who brings with him several years experience under the tutelage of Emeril Legasse. The fun bar part comes in with free informal wine tastings every Thursday from 5-6 where you can sample a variety of wines at cost, and live music Thursday through saturday nights.
I love Deer Creek Coffee. Their mocha muffins are to die for and their sandwiches with interesting combinations like the somerset: turkey, red peppers, cheddar and basil pesto on a pretzel roll are tasty and filling. The ambiance is equally comfortable for a quick business meeting or a lengthy catch-up visit.
Last but not least is schneithorst’s, a st. Louis landmark. This is where you go for a business breakfast, a quick lunch or dinner, or to take Grandma Ethel for a birthday celebration in a private room. It’s also where you go for the rooftop Biergarten happy hour with st. Louisans from all ages and all parts of town. It’s kitschy, but great, because it’s kitschy. Ladue and Frontenac are home to old money and exclusive country clubs. They’re also a friendly community with plenty of local shops and restaurants that are truly thankful for your business and excellent at showing it. The small town I grew up in set my standard for friendly, personal service. As an outsider who’s now an insider, these shops and restaurants meet that benchmark in every possible way. uT

There's no reason to panic. Just use the record high temperatures, sunshine, and increasing daylight hours to your benefit and take your fitness routine outside. not only is outdoor exercise more environmentally friendly than relying on treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes, but it could be more beneficial to your overall health as well. results from a study comparing the benefits of exercising in a natural environment to exercising indoors were published in the research journal Environmental Science and Technology in February 2011. These results of the study, made available on the website science Daily reveal that participants in numerous trials showed greater improvement in mental well being after exercising outdoors, when compared to improvements in mental well being after indoor exercise. results indicated "exercising in natural environments was associated with greater feelings of revitalization, increased energy and positive engagement, along with decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression. Participants also reported greater enjoyment and satisfaction with outdoor activity and stated that they were more likely to repeat the activity at a later date." www. sciencedaily.com
An additional benefit to outdoor exercise is the decreased restriction of movement patterns. Indoor workout machines tend to restrict our movement, and therefore we only increase muscle strength in isolated areas. Additionally, various types of outdoor exercise are performed on a variety of ground surfaces. Exercising on a variety of terrains leads to muscle confusion, which ultimately improves coordination overtime, and also trains the stabilizing muscles of the body. Muscle confusion also prevents plateaus in your training routine.
Along with the environmental, physical, and mental benefits to exercising outdoors, there are other perks according to Dr. Chris Iliades's blog on everydayhealth.com. For starters, you can save the money you would normally spend on a monthly gym membership, since everything you need to stay healthy and fit is right outside your door.
Iliades offers some helpful guidelines to follow before you head outside to pound the pavement or dirt. he advises outdoor fitness enthusiasts to apply a sweat and water proof sunscreen, and to consider wearing a hat and polarized sport sunglasses for additional protection.
Iliades also encourages drinking approximately 8-10 ounces of water for every 30 minutes of outdoor exercise, regardless of the temperature.
Before you head outside, you may want to check your fitness gear for wear and tear. Make sure your shoes
offer the correct amount of support for the intensity of your exercise, and that tires on bicycles are appropriate for the terrain. Wear socks that will protect from uncomfortable friction or blisters. here's a no-brainer: Wear a helmet when biking or rollerblading.
now that you're armed with some helpful tips on outdoor exercise, head out to one of the st. Louis area parks for your next workout. Forest Park, Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park, the Katy trail, and Castlewood state Park, just to name a few of the many parks in st. Louis City and County, offer trails and paths that can accommodate both heels and wheels (bicycle or rollerblade wheels, that is).
The website www.forestparkforever.org describes Forest Park's dual path system. The system, which consists of parallel hard and soft surface paths in most areas of the park, stretches for nearly six miles. The hard surface path is made of asphalt, and is perfect for biking or rollerblading, whereas the softer path, made of limestone chip, provides an ideal surface for walking and trail running.
In the county, Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park features Missouri's largest natural lake, Creve Coeur Lake. An asphalt path for fitness enthusiasts surrounds the 320-acre lake, before diverging onto to a separate trail that connects with the Katy trail, another popular outdoor fitness destination.
The majority of the 240-mile Katy trail follows the northern banks of the Missouri river. The trail's smooth limestone pug (crushed limestone) surface is frequently traveled by runners, walkers, and bikers year-round.
For a scenic bike ride or hike, head to Castlewood state Park. This park boasts eight trails of varied length and difficulty for hikers and bikers. Breathtaking views from high atop the bluffs along the Meramec river make your workout rewarding and worth every step.
For more information on these parks, you can visit the following websites:

Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park: www.lmvp.org/Lakes/CreveCoeur/crevecour.htm
The Katy trail: www. bikekatytrail.com

With so many outdoor fitness options available, what are you waiting for?
Obtaining that beachready body is more convenient than you may think. The only thing standing between you and your fitness goals is your front door. uT

the moment you meet Wendy Vitale you’re instantly taken in by her infectious laugh, her enthusiastic joie de vivre and her sense of style. she’s the kind of person you want to visit just because she’ll make your day a little brighter. And people do. Former clients pop in to have her select their shoes or invite her over for a glass of wine. the real joy is that everyone has the opportunity to bask in her glow while they benefit from her unique service as both the buyer and designer for Décor Interiors and Jewelry.
DÉCOR interiors & jewelry meet the face of
For those who may be intimidated or put off by the word designer, she is not your typical designer. Wendy is that rare combination of artistic and business-minded which makes her one of the most highly sought after designers in st. Louis. she works fast and is very respectful of both your time and budget. how she describes herself is perhaps more telling. Wendy says “Probably the most important thing is that I listen. I mean, if I did everybody’s house like mine, it would be completely wrong so I actually listen to what they want and then I tweak it.” What she most cares about and wants people to embrace is that “It’s a fun process, I make it fun! It’s not intimidating, and I work with all budgets.”
Customers who come into the store don’t pay for design time. her minimal charge of $85 per hour applies only when she goes out to visit your home to take measurements, develop a floor plan and get a picture
of the room. Given her nearly thirty years of experience, rarely does that take more than an hour. As third generation owner Joe Fredlich explains “We don’t make our money from design, we use design to keep you from making mistakes.” Wendy’s primary goal is to create a room that reflects your personality and lifestyle and have you enjoy the process. As a result, she’s very skilled at incorporating your existing pieces into the design. she enhances them with texture, architectural pieces, fabrics and color to create one-of-a-kind interiors that have you love your space. her team of people she works with regularly includes faux-finish painters and carpet installers who help her complete a look literally from top to bottom. Items that are custom ordered (including custom designed area rugs and window treatments) arrive in about six to eight weeks. she can also pull together a room in a day if everything is in stock.
38 | Uptown Magazine
As the buyer for Décor, Wendy keeps up with current trends by attending design markets twice a year. That dual role allows her to know exactly what’s in stock in their 20,000 square foot show room and warehouse space so she can adeptly plan your space. Frequently she goes to market with certain clients in mind keeping her eye out for that particular finishing accent piece. Clients love her so much she’s decorated entire homes including vacation homes in Vegas, Florida, Lake of the Ozarks and Minneapolis. But she’s just as happy to do small projects. Wendy says “It’s imperative that people understand I work with all budgets, even if you want a single sofa and for me to pick a paint color. And everybody’s treated the same.”
If you know Décor from the past, you may notice they’ve undergone a shift. Long known for carrying traditional style pieces, Décor has undergone a change recently updating the building’s facade as well as the inventory. The focus is now on transitional and Contemporary pieces that range from moderately priced to high-end. sofas range in price from $700 on up, and dining table and chair sets start at $1900. Wendy arranges the showroom in vignettes that she designs and changes out weekly so you get the full effect of her style and impact. Each is unique and never duplicated so if you should want to purchase the entire vignette, as some do, it will be an individual look that will never be replicated. They’ve also added a gift gallery that specializes in one of-akind items from $5 on up so you can quickly pop in and out, especially with their valet parking available Thursday through saturday.
If you’re wondering how jewelry fits in with a furniture store, it started back in the 1980s when Joe’s father started going to estate sales. As he purchased furniture and antiques, more often than not, the estates included jewelry as well. Joe explains “They already had an outlet for the furniture so the jewelry was an extension of the estate sales, finding a place for all that to go.” A loyal clientele developed and today they boast one of the largest loose stone collections in the Midwest. Décor has a huge selection of settings, includes six designer lines, and a selection of antique and pre-owned designer men’s watches. Their upgrade policy on loose diamonds and diamond studs gives you one hundred percent of what you paid for trade in on something new, even if that something new is only one dollar more. They also do on-site repairs, with a viewing window so your gems are never out of your sight.
Even though they are a furniture store they know that a loyal customer is their best business and Wendy’s designs reflect that. Joe says “Wendy takes pride in working with your existing furniture. she doesn’t dictate, but guides to you how to create a room that reflects your personality and lifestyle. It’s key to walk into a room and see your furniture.” regardless of whether you’re decorating an entire home, or simply trying to pick out a new coffee table, Wendy will make the process fun. she can’t help it. she’s just that kind of person and she wants you to have as much fun as she does. uT

pools cool
If you’ve always dreamed about having a swimming pool and a pool house in your backyard, then you should explore the possibilities. today’s swimming pools offer many unique designs such as an L-shape pool and a vanishing edge pool and contemporary swimming pools that are designed as spectacular freeform pools with elaborate pool scapes.
40 | Uptown Magazine
Pool builders agree that their clients are not only wanting a gorgeous pool, but they also want all the bells and whistles such as pool houses, entertainment areas, fountains, majestic waterfalls with lush landscaping, natural stone, outdoor lighting and attractive retaining walls that you might see in the most luxurious resorts. Often, the pool scape surrounding the pool has become just as important as the pool.
Dramatic features such as waterfalls, lighting effects, water jets, water slides, deck jets, sheer descents, covered grottos, colored lighting, spas and hot tubs, aesthetically pleasing finishes are now becoming the norm for residential pools. The pool designer and the homeowner agree on making the pool an extension of the home and landscaping. The pool becomes an important factor in the overall beauty and integrates with the land.
new technological advances have made it possible to build state-of-the-art pools and pool systems. Like most things in today’s world, technology has allowed for great changes in pool design and pool operation. sophisticated water chemistry controllers that once were only available in large commercial pools are now available for the backyard pool. These systems can interface with other home control units such as lighting and security systems. The added benefit is that the electronic brain of the systems simplifies the complexities of proper and safe water chemistry.
From a design standpoint, features that are part of high end commercial pools are now being added to residential pools. Dramatic features such as waterfalls, lighting effects, water jets, water slides, deck jets, sheer descents, covered grottos, colored lighting, spas and hot tubs, aesthetically pleasing finishes are now becoming the norm for residential pools. The pool designer and the homeowner agree on making the pool an extension of the home and landscaping.
since building a swimming pool can be expensive, it’s best
to get more than one bid from a pool builder. You can also go online and look at the websites of pool builders in your area. usually, the pool builders will list all of their credentials and explain how they work with their clients. You can also ask the pool builder top show you photographs of some of the pools that they have built. Better yet, ask your pool builder if you can visit the homes where some of the pools are located. That way, you can see first-hand the quality of the pool and this will give you a better idea of what your swimming pool will ultimately look like. It also helps to determine a budget. Once you have decided which pool builder you want to work with, be candid with your pool builder and set parameters. Discuss all the options for your pool and eliminate any extras that aren’t practical or worth the investment. Most important. You want to build a pool and pool scape that is consistent with your lifestyle. And, above all, be practical. You can have an attractive swimming pool without having to pay for extras that you won’t use or that will increase your costs.
hopefully, we’ve given you a head start on what you need to know about building a pool. uT

supper
Freshly-prepared summertime suppers are one of the great joys of summer when they’re served and enjoyed outdoors. to create a fun and casual summertime ambiance, set your outdoor dining table with colorful pottery and ceramic bowls and platters, and wine glasses filled with summer sangria garnished with orange slices. set your table with a brightlycolored patterned tablecloth and matching napkins. Create colorful napkin holders by wrapping rolled up napkins with multi-colored ribbons or streamers.
Or, you can create a more traditional and elegant summertime look with a white linen tablecloth, white napkins and white china. Add a bit of natural charm to your table with a crystal vase filled with freshly-cut flowers from your garden.
Place large candles in glass holders and fill the glass holders with fresh, fragrant lemons and limes. You can also add small twinkling votive candles around the table to create a festive party atmosphere that creates a magical atmosphere during the evening hours after the sun has set. Place large, comfy pillows in brightly colored patterns on your outdoor furniture to create a welcoming look.
We suggest a simple summer supper of tangy rum-flavored ribs, fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, and zesty horseradish potato salad for your outdoor entertaining. Impress your guests with our favorite summer dessert, a delectable homemade fruit trifle. Enjoy!

Al Fresco dining on a picturesque outdoor patio is sure to make your gourmet cuisine and fine wine taste even better. here are our favorite outdoor dining hotspots. Enjoy!
CAfÉ NAPOLI
Located in the heart of downtown Clayton , Café napoli already holds a reputation for outstanding food service and hospitality. It’s rated as one of the best Italian restaurants in the st. Louis area, serving a wide variety of fresh pasta, beef, seafood and veal dishes.
But there are two sides to this culinary story. For adjoining Café napoli, sits its more casual sister: Bar napoli a trendy cocktail lounge. Also recently added onto Bar napoli is “ napoli reserva “ a lounge like atmosphere with a smaller bar great for rehearsal dinners and holiday parties. Bar napoli’s large outdoor patio (seating 50) provides an added dining area, available from April to October. It’s a convenient spot to relax after work, and enjoy a favorite cocktail with friends.
Owner tony Pietoso described it, “Both Bar napoli and
Café napoli are in the corner of a piazza, as we say in the old country. In Italy it means square or plaza.” And like its Italian counterpart, Pietoso’s piazza is also a place for people watching.
Fine dining on the patio is available for lunch 11 -2 , dinner 5:30- 10pm. Fridays & saturdays we serve dinner until 11:00. In after hours, the lovely patio takes on a partylike atmosphere up until 1 am. On the occasional weekend, entertainment may be added in the form of a DJ or live music. Drink specials are offered Monday thru Thursday 4-7 pm. Bar napoli is already known for its huge selection of martinis, and an extensive selection of wines featured on iPads .
An upscale cosmopolitan atmosphere, together with great contemporary dining Italian style in an outdoor setting, combine to make Café napoli and Bar napoli a great spot for happy hour cocktails, dinner or a night cap. It’s definitely a must-go destination where friends and people meet for good times.

scottish arms
Tucked away in the Central West End, just west of St. Louis University, the Scottish Arms will give you an authentic taste of Europe without having to cross the pond.
Inside, the pub has a distinctive European flavor decorated with family crests, kilts and fixtures that feel as if they've come directly from a Scottish castle. The warm wooden booths call out to cram in just one more person to finish off that pitcher. The surroundings are comfortable but the linen tablecloths give it a touch of old world class.
Outside, the private, enclosed patio entices guests with
flowering gardens and a relaxed atmosphere. The clay chimineas allow the party to carry on into the wee hours by keeping you toasty on those not quite warm enough evenings. Or, keep warm instead by indulging in a shot of whisky from the largest selection in St. Louis.
Over 20 imported ales, porters and lagers from around the globe are served by the pint, 1/2 pint and pitchers. The authentic Scottish and seasonal European menu offers many pub classics like house made Haggis, Lamb Burgers with fennel jam and Fish n' Chips prepared with haddock traditional to the North East of Scotland. The seasonal menu is light with numerous salads, tuna tartar and lovely local cheeses and charcuterie on the Farmhouse Platter. Sunday Brunch should not be missed with seasonal light offerings and Fresh Squeezed Mimosas for $7.99 and Endless Mimosas for $14.99. The Arms is hopping all your round, no wonder you feel like you're in Scotland.

ADDIE's ThAI hOusE
By SHeILa FRayne RHOaDeS
Visit Addie's thai house and you’ll feel like you’ve arrived in thailand. that’s what knowledgeable diners have been saying ever since Addie’s opened in July of 2009. Addie's thai house offers true thai cuisine at moderate prices in an elegant atmosphere.
48 | Uptown Magazine
Owner, Louis Brinckwirth is no stranger to exotic cuisine. As far back as high school, he had worked in two Louis internationally themed restaurants. Brinckwirth said, “As a college student in the Francisco Bay area, I learned Thai food. A friend who knew I had past experience asked me to help out at a local Thai restaurant. It was there I met my future wife.” The couple eventually returned to dreams of opening such a place themselves. They bought what was an existing Thai restaurant in Chesterfield. After buying trips to Thailand for art work, china and flatware, the Brinckwirths created a more elegant Thai atmosphere. Addie’s is named for their eldest daughter, Adelaide. The restaurant is so impressive, you may think it’s more high end dining; however, Addie’s offers great value at reasonable prices along with a friendly and attentive staff.
The interesting menu lists many Thai favorites like curries, flavorful soups, meat and fish dishes, as well as vegetarian. “Most Mid Western Thai restaurants seem grounded in the Chinese model. We know what authentic Thai cuisine means, and that’s what we present at Addie’s,” said Brinckwirth. “Addie’s emulates those nicer restaurants you would find in Bangkok.”
Menu samples include a fabulous Thai Dumpling appetizer of steamed mixed pork and ground shrimp with jicama, egg, cilantro, pepper and green onions, wrapped with dumpling wrapper. Deep fried sweet Potatoes come with coconut flakes and ground peanuts in a special sweet and sour sauce. Fried spring rolls consist of cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, cilantro, and glass noodles wrapped in an egg roll wrapper, deep-fried, and served with sweet and sour sauce. Addie's famous Fresh rolls offer bean sprouts, tofu, cucumber, green onion, and egg wrapped in rice paper, steamed, then topped with sweet tamarind sauce. Thai summer rolls come with roasted duck, shitake mushrooms, spinach, cilantro, mint, cucumber, carrot, purple cabbage and bibb leaf wrapped in thin rice paper, served with a cherry and tamarind sauce.

Addie’s is recognized for serving the best Panang Curry in the area. It has a spicy flavor done with tender bell peppers and choice of meat. Diners especially love the Pad Thai –Pan fried thin rice noodles with chicken, garlic, egg, tofu, bean sprouts, carrots, green onions and ground peanuts. Gang Kua Ped Yang (roasted Duck Curry) features a delicious blend of sautéed sliced boneless duck in red curry with coconut milk, pineapple, tomatoes, bell peppers and Thai sweet basil. Other dining delights include sweet Basil Pork and Waterfall Beef, both bursting with flavor. seafood with Eggplant consists of sautéed prawns, scallops, calamari and green mussels with garlic, onions, bell peppers, eggplant, and Thai sweet basil.
Addie’s house specialties set this Thai restaurant apart from all others. They include trout in Green Curry with Eggplant - Green curry and coconut milk served over wokfried golden trout and Japanese eggplant. Luscious Garee talays – has shrimp, crabmeat, scallops, and calamari in curried lobster sauce. Chuu Chee salmon features grilled salmon in a thick, red curry with coconut milk and shredded kafir leaves. For dessert try sticky rice and mango.
Bar offerings are Thai food-friendly. “Our signature drinks are excellent – like mint julep, mojito, and a raffles singapore sling,” said Brinckwirth. Moderately prices wines and 20 different beers, including three from Thailand, complete the bar list.
Brinckwirth said, “We can provide for parties up to 45. My previous work in hotels and country clubs prepared me to offer our guests the highest standards of service.” Whether it’s a casual lunch, dinner or special occasion, at Addie’s Thai house, you’ll dine in splendor like siamese royalty. uT

this uptown issue’s extreme getaway is to Australia and new Zealand, the world Down under. Who doesn’t want to go to the land of hugh Jackman, nicole Kidman, Joan sutherland (the opera singer), InXs and Crocodile Dundee and did I mention hugh Jackman? Who doesn’t dream of visiting the land of adventure, action, dramatic scenery, kangaroos, reefs, ocean, culture, koalas and crocks, all so different from our own American Midwest.
truly on the other side of the world, below Japan, hong Kong and singapore, sits the sixth largest country in the world, Australia and the more southern island of new Zealand. I was taught Australia was a continent but the un refers to the continent of Oceania. It’s geology. new Zealand is not on the same continental shelf as Australia in spite of its close proximity. tahiti, the Cook Islands, Fiji, samoa and a host of other surrounding islands now fall under the more appropriate, all-inclusive term of the continent of “Oceania”. According to the united nations, Oceania includes Australia, new Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Got all of that? It’s important to know which continent you are visiting!
Our seasons are reversed. Their winter is our summer. December to February is summer; March to May is autumn; June to August is winter; and september to november is spring. remember, however, that Australia is as big as the lower 48 here in the us so weather varies in each area just as
Florida’s weather is different than Wisconsin’s, tasmania’s is vastly different than Alice springs.
When I asked Google how far sydney was from st. Louis, I received directions as well. According to the omniscient Google, st. Louis is 15,528 miles away however that is incorrect. The map took me all the way to Washington state and told me to kayak to honolulu! A better idea is to fly out of L.A on an American or Qantas flight, four hours to Los Angeles and fifteen to sydney or go united through san Francisco. You can fly into new Zealand on Air new Zealand out of L.A as well with convenient flights into Auckland.
Most the population of Australia lives on the eastern and southeastern coasts where the land is fertile and the cities of Melbourne, sydney and Brisbane are located. Canberra, the capital of Australia, sits between Melbourne and sydney. The middle of Australia is dry with scorching red deserts. Each area of Australia offers vastly different wonderful sights,

cultures, cities, wildlife and flora and fauna and temperatures. There are 6 states: Queensland, new south Wales, Victoria, south Australia, Western Australia and tasmania. There are two mainland territories: Australian Capital territory and northern territory and seven off shore territories. here are some brief descriptions of the mainland.
new south Wales located on the southeast coast of Australia has the largest city in the country, sydney, with more than a third of the country’s population. sitting on an inlet of the tasman sea, sydney was the site of the penal colony where England sent their undesirables. sydney is cosmopolitan with much to offer.
Victoria, at the most southern tip of the mainland on the east is the second most populated mainly because of the city of Melbourne. history shows that Australia too had a gold rush shortly after ours in the states and Melbourne became one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. to this day, the city is the cultural capital and the mecca of Australian film, television, art, dance and music and sports. From Melbourne, you can fly or take the ferry to tasmania, drive the Pacific Coastal route to sydney or go along the Great Ocean road to Adelaide.
Queensland has perfect weather for outdoor activities and water sports and offers plenty to see and do. here is the home of the Great Barrier reef, the largest coral reef on earth. see Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island, the city of Cairns and the multitude of national parks, sanctuaries and Aboriginal rock art. Fish, camp or take the Kuranda scenic railway to the rainforest village of Kuranda. About an hour north of Brisbane is the Australia Zoo, home of the late steve Irwin, the Crocodile hunter. his family still runs the zoo, keeping his memory alive with conservation programs and activities making this zoo a favorite for tourist and citizens.
The northern territory is in the north central part of the country where Alice springs, Ayer’s rock and Kakadu national Park are located. Visit the

reflects the culture and charm of the Old World.
With the European settlers came world-famous vineyards. Australia has more wine choices than Yellow tail wine. There are vineyards and wine trails in many parts of Australia. Thirty-seven miles north east of Adelaide is the Barossa wine valley which host world famous wineries. When traveling to Australia, many people decide to include new Zealand. not quite a thousand miles off the coast of Australia, new Zealand alone is a worthy destination. Composed of two main islands, the north Island and south Island, both are separated by the Cook strait. On either island, you are never more than 75 miles from the coast. The inside terrain is mountainous with volcanic peaks on the north Island and higher peaks on the south Island at around 9,800 feet high making the country very popular for climbing. On one side of Mount Cook is the 19 mile long tasman Glacier which is one of the longest outside of the himalayas. skiing and ski-planes, heli-skiing and ski touring are available. Queenstown is the main skiing center.
The key word for new Zealand is “nature”. Forests of giant kauri trees, huge sand dunes, underground caves lit by thousands of glow-worms, sheep ranches, mineral waters, rivers and coast are perfect for bikers, trekking and viewing magnificent scenery. Due to the winds and topography, new Zealand’s air is unpolluted. Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington offer big city attractions and the smaller cities doting the country each have distinct personalities based on the heritage of the settlers.
since this has been a quick tutorial of Australia/new Zealand, I highly suggest you contact your local travel agent for information on the various ways to see these beautiful countries. Escorted and independent tours, train trips, sports tours are just some of the ways to visit. One of my very favorite companies offer trips just for 18-35 year olds where you can send your college graduate to Australia/new Zealand with other young adults from across America. What a vacation of a life time and learning experience no matter what your age!

is the season to be jolly! Yes - because we can enjoy outdoor dining, the Cardinals, shakespeare in the Park, Parties in the Park(anything in the park!) and all the other great attractions that make this city the unique place we’re proud to call home. so here goes, this issue’s list of must-visits.
to prep yourself for summer, visit the flagship retail store of the national catalog company, st. Louis’ own soft surroundings (33 The Boulevard, richmond heights, 314-262-4949, softsurroundings.com). They recently opened a “renewal room” adding soft skin to their menu of bedding, clothing, gifts and furniture. Licensed estheticians terri and Jay will make you as soft as the clothes and bedding they drape you in with body treatments, facials, lash and brow tints, and body waxing. If you want to get familiar with them first, come in for one of their complementary makeup and beauty events that run every other saturday (call first to schedule an appointment). The clothing line is scrumptiously soft, flattering sizes from Petite Extra small to 2X making it the one place where you and your friends can shop together. And the customer service is outstanding!
Tavolo V, (6120 Delmar Blvd, u. City Loop, 314-7214333, tavolov.com) is the latest offering from Michael Del Pietro (sugo’s, Babbo’s, Pazzo’s, Via Vino). tavolo Five, as it’s pronounced, features an emphasis on vegetarian dishes with an Italian flair - of course. The menu has a large selection of both hot and cold antipasti, pizzas, pastas and a few entrees. With modern garage doors that open and close, the outdoor dining is seamless with the rest of the restaurant giving it a very European flavor. The moderate prices (most pastas are $12, entrees, $17) and unique combination of fresh ingredients make this a great place to add to your list of spots to try out this summer.
Further west on Delmar, at the spot formerly occupied by the long-lived Brandt’s is Nico, (6525 Delmar Blvd. 314727-0200, nicostl.com) the younger brother to Franco’s in soulard. Owner tom schmidt, continues with the farm to
table seasonal approach with a Mediterranean flair. The menu takes its inspiration from spanish, Italian, Moroccan and French cuisine - all with the common Mediterranean ingredients of fine olive oils and herbs. Inside is an elegant interior hosting moderately priced (entrees from $15 to $24) offerings that include homemade pappardelle, risotto with house-made pancetta, moroccan lamb and stuffed calamari. They also have sandwiches and starters for those with a smaller appetite. And of course there’s outdoor dining which soon will hopefully also be home to a kiosk offering fresh Italian ice made with a “classic castiron shaver”.
Opened in February, Crushed Red Urban Bake and Chop shop (6007 Maryland Ave., Clayton, 314-725-8007, crushedredrestaurant.com) is that perfect mix of fresh, fast and fun. Knowing people have an increased interest in exactly what ingredients are in their food, Crushed red prepares their fresh chopped-to-order salads with organic toppings in front of the customers. The menu also includes made to order whole grain pizzas, soups and “shareables” like hummus and goat cheese. Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner, they also host happy hour from 4 -7 with $1 off beer and wine. uT
