Summer 2013 fashion makes a bold statement with bright, upbeat colors. Look for deep shades of orange, coral, fuchsia, turquoise blue and lime green in a multitude of feminine, flattering styles.
Summer is the perfect season for chic designer dresses in the most-wanted styles — everything from short, abovethe-knee dresses — to long, sophisticated maxi dresses. One of the summer season’s most colorful maxi dresses is Shoshanna’s dramatic orange and fuchsia print maxi dress, the perfect summer party attire. Add a pair of brightlycolored sandal heels and your best jewels and you’re ready for any special occasion.
Designer shorts are an important fashion look for summer such as Shoshanna’s bright orange and white print shorts paired with Shoshanna’s vivid orange and white tee shirt. You can dress up this casual look with glam gold metallic sandals and an armful of gleaming gold bangles.
White makes a fashion comeback for summer. One of the season’s best new looks in white is Vineyard Vines’ white eyelet strapless dress embellished with a festive multi-colored ribbon sash.
Pink, one of the most flattering colors, is also one of the summer season’s most-wanted colors. We especially like Tibi’s luxurious pink silk party dress with straps. The ultimate summer fashion accessories are Jack Rogers’ pink Barcelona Capri wedges and Jack Roger’s fabulous pink Maui tote, perfect for day or night.
The perfect fashion accessory is Jemma Sands' blue tanzanite and diamond bracelet.
If you want to be seen wearing the best new looks for Summer 2013, the good news is that you can shop online right now for these fabulous fashion finds. uT

Frontenac &Ladue
By sHeILa FRayne RHOaDes
Frontenac and Ladue share a French Connection – Incorporated in 1947, Frontenac’s name was inspired by Quebec City’s most striking landmark, the Château FrontenaC . The community still consists of homes and businesses where French architecture is encouraged (Le Chateau Village). Ladue’s roots go back to Peter Albert LaDue, a French immigrant who fought in the Revolutionary War. He moved to St. Louis and became a prominent attorney, alderman, and investor in the 1840s.

Augusta
By LInDa sPaLL
Thirty-five miles from St. Louis, out Highway 94 West, sits a quaint little village called Augusta. The town and surrounding area offers B and B’s , antique shops, a gloriously picturesque section of a 225-milelong bike and walking path called the Katy Trail and award winning wineries that offer breath-taking spectacular vistas of the finest Missouri vineyards.
Imagine what was in the minds of the German settlers when they traveled from St Louis to the Missouri River Valley and beheld the rich, fertile soil, the abundant timber and wildlife and the stunningly beautiful rolling hills which were so similar to their own homeland. Circa 1821, Gottfried Duden traveled from Germany searching for a compatible land where his fellow countrymen, politically
and religiously oppressed, could find peace and promise. With the help of Nathaniel Boone, Daniel’s son, he beheld the Missouri River Valley, with its unique soil and climate. Word was sent to the future German pioneers and the vineyards were born from the settlers’ carefully wrapped grapevine roots which transported from their homeland and were ready to plant.
The unique ambiance of Augusta is,
of course, the romantic combination of the superior wines and the splendor of the scenery and the charm of the town. A weekend stay at a B & B gives you the opportunity to visit the many wineries in the area. Whatever your preferences may be, you will find the perfect wine for your particular palate, the ideal atmosphere, the right size and personality of your favorite tasting room or the best chairs

perfectly placed to view the dramatic scenery. Each of Augusta’s wineries have a distinct personality with a variety of fine wine, facilities, processing and variety of grapes, shops and entertainment, depending on your mood and desires
montelle Winery sits 400 feet above the Missouri River with an outdoor terrace with an awesome view of the vineyards, Augusta and the river valley. A sister property of Augusta Winery, these folks know their wine! Visit the Klondike Café or enjoy a delicious 3 course meal while watching a brilliant sunset!
Augusta Winery features The Wine & Beer Garden which is a lovely outdoor wine terrace with a 10-foot grape arbor, serene fountain and great entertainment in the warm months, the tasting room with gift shop and the Owl’s Nest which is used for indoor seating. Great wine in great setting! mt. Pleasant was founded by the Munch brothers in 1859 and named after the town’s original name. Wine tasting is quite the experience as the wine is served in Riedel glassware designed specifically to enhance the taste of a particular wine. Take a tour of the wine cellars, grab a bite at the Appellation Café, attend a winemaker dinner or simply enjoy a stroll.
noboleis Vineyards, right off Hwy 94, has indoor and outdoor seating with a serene wonderful view of the vineyards.. You can visit the tasting room, utilize the more private room called the Winemaker’s Loft and take the opportunity to have your wedding in the vineyards.
sugar creek Winery and Vineyards has a covered outdoor patio where you can sip their world-class wine in rain or shine. The setting is lovely with the turn of the century Victorian home surrounded by flourishing vineyards.
Balducci Vineyards’ vast open clearing welcomes you to a blanket picnic and if you choose, a bit of romantic privacy. A large outdoor shelter lets you relax and enjoy the world of wine and peaceful unforgettable scenery. Located close by in the Defiance area, c handler hill Vineyards is a beautiful winery which has an unique history. Named for the former slave, Joseph Chandler, who owned the land, the vineyards overlook the breathtaking Femme Osage Valley. With a full service menu, wine tasting room and gorgeous scenery, Chandler Hill has a personality of its own.
Also in Defiance is the cozy Yellow house Vineyard and Winery which is easy to find and sits on a distinctive hill. Not only do they offer excellent wine but specialize too in four different homemade mustards to go with cheese and sausage!
These wineries are the fruition of the dreams of their owners. These families developed not only a destination but an unforgettable experience of superior wine, romance, and relaxation. The town is charming and accommodating and so very close to St. Louis. Relax and experience Augusta! uT

H.s. Clay House
Reflections of Love Be D an D B R ea KF as T :
By LInDa sPaLL
If our homes are true reflections of our taste, passions, values and personalities, the present owners of the award-winning H. S. Clay House Bed and Breakfast in Augusta, Missouri are warm, friendly, interesting, welcoming and accommodating.
When we came upon the historical Victorian, the charm, presentation and preservation of the past was everywhere, from the gables on the roof to the handmade iron fence and the welcoming aesthetically perfectly placed ferns draped along the wrap around porch. After being heartily greeted by Leigh and Alan Buehre , the character and soul of the house made perfect sense.
For 22 years, this captivating couple has followed their dream of owning their own B & B. With their combined experience in hospitality and culinary skills, they purchased the 128 year old house and made it their own in 1991. When they purchased the home, all three floors were totally empty and now, after sharing their combined talents, passion for history, people and personal tastes, the house is full of

decorative interesting conversational pieces, antiques and treasures.
The story began in 1885 when Hampson Strother Clay, a medical doctor, built the house for his second wife, Marie. Nine children later, he passed away. Marie, alone, raised her sons to be doctors and two daughters to be nurses. The Buehres are the fourth owners of the house.
The home itself has two suites, three guest rooms and a guest cottage which is directly across the street. The Turret Suite on the second floor is the larger of the two suites with a fire place, sitting room, bathroom and private balcony. In fact, all the guest rooms, the sitting rooms and the dining room have a working fireplace. The main floor has two parlors, the Red Room is decorated with gentlemen in mind and the Parlor tailored more for the ladies. The dining room is situated conveniently between the Parlor and the kitchen.
Also on the main floor are a wine closet, the private laundry room, and a pathway to the back door which leads to the pool, decks and gardens. I loved the enchanting aviary in the bathroom at the rear of the house that is also viewed from the outside deck with happy birds chirping away! Plush comfortable robes are in each bedroom for the guest and a rack of them line the wall on the entry hall bathroom setting the stage for a night of contentment.
The décor of the house is absolutely mesmerizing due to the fascinating attention to detail. Alan and Leigh love to give tours of the rooms with intriguing stories behind the many antiques and collectables.
One of my favorite rooms was the Red Room. This room alone has a cart full of Civil War cannon balls, an antique rocking horse, old fish mountings, a collection of canes, a tri-corner hat, powder horns, buffalo head, a collection of scrimshaw, and my favorite, a chess set with salt and pepper shakers in the correct shapes and sizes of a chess pieces.
The kitchen has three different moods of décor, the modern appliances, the culinary island and food preparation section and the antique portion that resembles a nostalgic General Store. Old food signs, a fire bucket and old kitchen items cover the walls and shelves. Old cigar molds and actual cigar cutters are hung next to the proudly displayed restaurant license of 100 percent accreditation with the state county and city.
The stairwell going to the second level has paintings, drawings, and photographs of the house, each with a unique history. At the top of the stairs, hangs a 1905 Augusta baseball uniform accompanied by a photograph of the team.
The rooms each have their own distinct flavor. The Tree Top Suite, the only room on the third floor is memorable. Complete with a small library, skylight, TV, sitting room, full bath and a queen size bed under a skylight, this room is a favorite with those who seek relaxation and privacy. Look for the Mammy’s Bench, with a removable side!
Imagine escaping to in this authentic 128 year old home in a quaint Mid-Western town surrounded with wineries and vineyards. Picture visiting friendly warm, engaging friends who open their home to you, cook delicious culinary delights and cater to your sense of stepping back in time. Smart, sophisticated Mikki Jones graciously allowed us into her elegant estate in Chesterfield for a tour and a delightful interview. This lovely lady from Pittsburgh and her 15 year old daughter, Elena, share this 20 room, 5 bedroom home along with seven very well-behaved canines.
When entering the 15,000 square foot home, you will notice the spectacular living room with full-length arched windows making the house immediately welcoming and majestic at the same time. The 28-30 foot ceiling in the entry way is jaw-dropping awesome. A wrought iron stone curved stairway leads to either the upper level bedrooms or to the lower more casual recreation rooms. Custom designed by Bob and Mikki, the stairway was handmade at Valley Forge Company in Eureka. Installment was torturous as the stairs
were delivered in sections with each piece weighing 700 lbs!
The effort was worth the magnificent steps.
The tiled floor spills into the living room separated by fern plants introduces you to the eclectic French Mediterranean style decor that carries through the rest of the house. The dark wood of the stately cabinets and fireplace is accented by the copper gold walls.
The house has three floors. The main entrance is on the middle floor which also hosts the aforementioned living room, study, formal dining room, an open kitchen/breakfast room/sitting room which is affectionately called the Hearth Room, master suite, powder room, office, laundry and bathroom. The pool and cabana are off the kitchen.

Through the door, the living room connects to the Hearth Room. At first one might notice the kitchen with the beautiful distressed Old World style cabinetry combined with the complimentary granite top. When turning to see the entire Hearth Room, the same styled cabinets are blended with the built in 21st century wide-screen television with 7 cuddly soft dog beds aesthetically lined on the floor directly in front. A gray stoned chimney and fireplace in the corner enhance and blend keeping the casual elegance and French Country style.
One of my favorite sections is the corner breakfast room, where stands and an impressive, hand painted allencompassing cabinet that covers the entire wall. The stunning tablecloth in fabric of a vibrant golden yellow and red accentuates the gloriously brilliant pattern of the dishes displayed behind the glass. The red chairs, patterned rug and
draped valance with a stone edge of the building seen through the window are absolutely breathtaking. Keeping in the French theme, the beautiful beams in the ceiling above came from a New Orleans bordello!
As you walk through the house one can’t help to notice how the carefully placed, tastefully designed appearance of plants and flower arrangements along with the touches of European wrought iron keep the home in harmony with the Mediterranean theme and show kinship with the nature outside.
Upstairs rooms are three bedrooms, the nanny’s quarters complete with a full bath and kitchen. Elena’s room is dazzling. In multi-colored pinks, white and brown polka dots, and yellow, blue and pink rug, the colors all come together with the lime green patterned bedspread and the more pastel hues and brown accent pillows layered on the French Provincial bed.

and gatherings. The billiard room, with the pool table in the center, is a large area which gives players plenty of room to make their shots.
On the wall is a sign that says “Jonesy’s Place” along with a martini glass in neon. The sign was mounted to the wall for a speak-easy themed party for Mikki’s husband, the late Bob Jones. A vodka martini was Bob’s favorite drink. Robert Jones owned The Jones Company, and was one of the largest home builders in the St. Louis area. The story is a romantic one. At the time, Mikki was working in the health care industry in an orthopedic office where Mr. Jones would come for treatment from time to time. Eventually, a lovely bouquet of flowers arrived signed by “Ralph”. Mikki was flummoxed. Who was Ralph? One day, Bob came in, wearing his favorite casual polo shirt and asked about the flowers. She figured out. Ralph Lauren. Polo shirt! It was meant to be. The story is even more astounding in that Mikki was owner of Abington Custom Homes and the Jones Company was her competition! They were married in 2000 and Robert E. Jones died in February 2004.
Mikki is charismatic, smart and artistic with a background in design, building and business. She always wanted to run a restaurant and that dream came true as she is the proud owner of Bistro 1130 located at Town and Country Crossing in West County. The critically acclaimed bistro has been selected as the area’s Best New Restaurant of 2011 and the Best of Chesterfield in 2012. This intimate, elegant yet very reasonably priced establishment offers a global cuisine, with the dining area and additional seating in the bar area and outdoor patio. The ambiance is relaxing and cozy (reflections of Mikki’s personality) and the food, prepared by Chef Kevin Taylor is lavish and full of flavor. With the glass chandeliers, mirrors and the greenery out on the patio, you can sense Mikki’s influence and her tasteful flair for classic, sophisticated, design.
Elena loves her dogs, her mom, her friends and school and she is an agile, passionate tennis player. As gracious and personable as her mother, she also has an affinity to Europe and would someday like to see Bucharest, Romania, the town where she was born. She is also very talented and is competing in the Miss Teen St. Louis Pageant.
An afternoon visiting this grand, stately yet comfortable home was inspirational. With a little imagination, we are able to use color as accents, plants to create atmosphere, creative lighting, art and intricate and bold design can display our passions, moods, and our dreams. Mikki and Elena’s home is as beautiful as they are themselves..uT

Allied A.S.I.D. Member, Teddy Karl, named one of the top St. Louis decorators by at home magazine, is the design genius behind the success of The Great Cover Up, St. Louis’ leading retail source for decorator fabrics and wall coverings from famed names like Brunschwig & Fils, Lee Jofa, Schumacher, Cowtan & Tout, Fabricut, Robert Allen, and Thibaut. The Great Cover Up is a full-service design studio that offers decorator furniture, lamps, rugs, artwork, accessories, window treatments, bedding, upholstering and unique gifts for the home.
Q. How would you define your decorating style?
A. My decorating style is traditional with meticulous attention to detail and a touch of the unexpected. I like to mix texture, pattern and layers to create a sophisticated, put-together look. I always like to add a touch of fun and whimsy to my design projects with trims, fringes, and decorator pillows, which I design and make. I also like the whimsical touch of Chinoiserie such as a Chinoiserie lamp, fabric, wall paper, or table.
Q. How did you embark on a career as an interior designer?
A. I began my career as a bridal gown designer and bridal shop owner in Massachusetts. However, I wanted to expand my design skills. I have always had an interest in fabrics and textiles, so interior design was a natural career move. I had the opportunity to become an interior designer for Sunshine Drapery in St. Louis. After spending eight years as a designer with Sunshine Drapery, my family and I returned to Massachusetts, where I worked as a designer for Leonards New England. Many of my clients had luxurious second homes on The Cape, which I decorated. My clients then asked me to decorate their primary residences. My family and I were delighted to come back to St. Louis when I became the manager of The Great Cover Up.
Q. what is the best part of your job?
Q. what inspires you most about interior design?
A. I’m inspired by decorator details, color, layering, texture, and pattern. I also enjoy designing and making designer pillows with fine fabrics and trims. I custom-design pillows for my clients. My collection of decorator pillows is available at The Great Cover Up.
A. I enjoy virtually all aspects of being a designer, including working with our suppliers as well as our retail clients, but what I like most is to be able to collect so many unique and beautiful home furnishings, accessories, art and antiques for my clients' decorating projects. I strive to create elegant interiors for my clients that reflect their lifestyles. My wife and I enjoy a formal and elegant lifestyle, so our home is decorated with traditional, yet formal furnishings and accessories. I am a ‘people’ person.
Q. what interior designers do you admire most?
A. I especially like the decorating styles of Mario Buatta and Charles Faudree.
I enjoy their use of color, texture and pattern as well as the layered look that they both have become famous for. uT

The lawn’s been mowed and the BBQ is fired up. All that’s needed now is beautiful outdoor furniture to welcome your family and guests. Creating your own outdoor oasis couldn’t be easier. Outdoor living spaces have become just as comfortable and stylish as those indoors. With that in mind, the deep seating style in patio furniture appears to be in vogue today. This furniture is set lower to the floor with a deeper cushion setting. More relaxed than traditional patio lounge sets, it offers both elegance and comfort.

Forshaw offers this trendy style in Hanamint’s Berkshire Collection. The Berkshire is cast from durable and lightweight aluminum. Kathy Rhodes of Forshaw said, “Hanamint’s Berkshire is one of our best- selling groups. Cast aluminum is the direction that the market has been going, due to the fact that it is the most durable and has less maintenance as well. Today’s customers are looking for something that will last and be easy to take care of - it will never rust! All fabrics are designed to be left outdoors, rain or shine. Cast aluminum
furniture can be a purchase of a life time, and in today's economy that’s what people are looking for.” Deep seating furniture usually has elegant scrolling arms, and double-woven crisscrossed seats and backs. Rhodes said, “The styling of this furniture has classic lines that are timeless, another reason customers are making this the most sought after product on the market. “Melissa Blair of schnarr’s hardware said, “As far as trends go, green is the color of the season, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing various green hues popping up in patio furniture. Our supplier just added an adorable lime green bistro set. I’ve also noticed that people seem to be getting more creative with their outdoor lighting choices. As the cost of long-lasting LED technology goes down, I think our outdoor lighting options will keep expanding. For example we just added a line of outdoor flameless candles, lanterns, and string lights that are already selling really well for us! And of course- we sell a ton of citronella tiki torches every year- you can’t go wrong with a classic!“ Blair also recommended the Gulf Shores Collection for its simple flowing lines and neutral earth tones. “The folding sling chairs are very comfortable and store nicely. All pieces are sold individually.”
Vickie Jeude of Terra said island tranquility is a popular theme. “Our Tommy Bahama line redefines outdoor casual living with its Island Estate Lanai collection. It’s easy to achieve an island state of mind, relaxing in sets of this all-weather woven wicker. Another outstanding collection is the Kingston Sedona also by Tommy Bahama. It features intricate Tuscan-inspired designs, cast in all-weather aluminum from hand-carved molds, with an ebony finish and bronze highlight, making this perhaps the most elegant and sophisticated of outdoor collections.” Jeude added, “The BIG GREEN EGG is a really good seller right now, and the customers like the smoky flavor it produces. It’s undergone many improvements since it was introduced in 1974. It’s a smoker, grill, and oven all in one. You can cook literally any food on it all year round, from appetizers to entrees to desserts.” uT

Tucked away in the Central West End, just west of St. Louis University, the Scottish Arms will give you an authentic taste of Europe without having to cross the pond.
Inside, the pub has a distinctive European flavor decorated with family crests, kilts and fixtures that feel as if they've come directly from a Scottish castle. The warm wooden booths call out to cram in just one more person to finish off that pitcher. The surroundings are comfortable but the linen tablecloths give it a touch of old world class.
Outside, the private, enclosed patio entices guests with
flowering gardens and a relaxed atmosphere. The clay chimineas allow the party to carry on into the wee hours by keeping you toasty on those not quite warm enough evenings. Or, keep warm instead by indulging in a shot of whisky from the largest selection in St. Louis.
Over 20 imported ales, porters and lagers from around the globe are served by the pint, 1/2 pint and pitchers. The authentic Scottish and seasonal European menu offers many pub classics like house made Haggis, Lamb Burgers with fennel jam and Fish n' Chips prepared with haddock traditional to the North East of Scotland. The seasonal menu is light with numerous salads, tuna tartar and lovely local cheeses and charcuterie on the Farmhouse Platter. Sunday Brunch should not be missed with seasonal light offerings and Fresh Squeezed Mimosas for $7.99 and Endless Mimosas for $14.99. The Arms is hopping all your round, no wonder you feel like you're in Scotland.

Sophisticated yet comfortable, the patio spills out directly from the bar creating a vibrant hot spot for men and women of all ages. Or if you prefer a more distant stance, bar height two-tops offer an expansive view of the crowd. The crowd is energetic and friendly and you're bound to run into
someone you know - this is St. Louis after all. Happy Hour specials include Monday through Friday $5 drink menu, $5 martinis all day on Wednesdays, and their "Tuscan Taster bar menu" for only $3.95. But don't let that stop you from enjoying the full Italian menu.
They specialize in pasta, of course, and balance that with grilled entrees like Gorgonzola Crusted Bistecca with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. Even the children's menu expands beyond mac and cheese and pizza to include grilled salmon or grilled chicken. Weekend brunch borders on hedonism, lasting until three in the afternoon, with choices like Berries & Cream French Toast or Eggs Oscar. Pair that with a Bloody Mary or a Mimosa and call it a day. There's a reason Brio's is always packed. Good food, an always lively crowd, and comfortable yet classy surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for any occasion.

ravissimo! CANDICCI’S is now located right in the heart of West County at the corner of Manchester and Holloway Roads.
For 33 years, CANDICCI’S has been serving up authentic Italian cuisine, going back to its original restaurant in Clayton. Owner Bob Candice said, “When I initially opened CANDICCI’S in 1980, I took as my model the wonderful neighborhood ristorantes that populate New York’s famous “Little Italy” section. I wanted to recreate that special intimate ambience - a blend of attentive, friendly service, casual atmosphere and classic Italian cooking.”
CANDICCI'S has relocated several times since 1980. Happily many loyal customers followed Candice to each location. Now in Ballwin, CANDICCI’S continues to offer the fine Italian cuisine of St. Louis’ “Big Hill”, and welcomes old and new friends alike. To Bob Candice, the customer always comes first. He likes to work the dining room, stopping by tables to greet his guests. On busy dinner nights, Candice can be seen smoothly orchestrating his bustling staff from

inside the kitchen and out to the dining area. The service here is always courteous and friendly, making for a delightful dining experience.
A large wine cabinet separates the two dining area. There’s a long elevated bar with TVs usually tuned into the latest sports games. Live entertainment is offered Thursday through Saturday nights. It’s pleasant to sit perched at the bar listening to sounds of Sinatra and the like. When warmer temperatures arrive, diners spill out into the patio where umbrella shaded tables and potted plants make the space inviting and relaxing.
The lunch and dinner menus are big, and so are the dishes. It is recommended to come hungry. Huge portions of CANDICCI’S favorites are here - pasta, veal, seafood, chicken and beef dishes –each made from only the freshest ingredients. Pizza, flatbreads, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads and appetizers are also available. Pasta is really king at CANDICCI'S. It’s always a winner, no matter which dish selected.
Appetizers are generously portioned, almost meals in themselves, like Eggplant Parmigiana - crispy battered eggplant topped with marinara sauce and provel cheese. Try the Shrimp Gorgonzolagrilled shrimp, seasoned in Italian bread crumbs and served in a rich gorgonzola cheese sauce. Favorite dinner entrees include Chicken Raspberry –char-broiled chicken breast in
a raspberry glaze, and Veal Parmigiana - tender veal cutlet in a homemade meat sauce, topped with Mozzarella and Parmigan cheese. Oh, and CANDICCI'S serves a house salad to die for! Pizzas are hand tossed including traditional, Sicilian, Greek, and more with great toppings you can’t even imagine. For dessert, choose from the classic Italian dolci like cannoli, tiramisu and spumoni.
Executive Chef, Rodney Leadbetter has been at Candicci’s since 1991. Leadbetter is excited about the organic produce he uses in all his recipes. “ I get all my produce from Grateful Acres Farm in Hillsboro. That includes many varieties of lettuce and vegetables. For this summer, GAF has planted 300 tomato plants exclusively for us, including six different heirloom tomatoes. A Tomato Festival is scheduled all summer at CANDICCI'S!”
The sauces are sure to be fresh and savory. Leadbetter is so organic minded, he even planted an fresh herbal garden in flower boxes at the restaurant’s main entrance.
Upcoming events at CANDICCI'S include special menus for both Derby Day and Mother’s Day weekend. Saturday May 4th Derby Day will be fun filled outside on the beautiful patios with Prime Rib Buffet. “This will be our patio’s grand opening,” said Leadbetter. “ We’ll offer a special lunch and dinner buffet, plus live music after 6 pm. Come Mother’s Day, CANDICCI'S will present brunch for $23.95 including roast lamb, pork, top round of beef, eggs benedict, French toast casserole, and much more.”
CANDICCI’S offers a full catering service for all your special event needs - private parties, rehearsal dinners, and weddings.
Reservations are accepted on the weekend for parties of six or more. uT

With Memorial Day quickly approaching, families will race to fire up the grill with summer veggies and juicy burgers. We often hear grilling tips: don’t compress burgers too tight, leave a depression in the center, and shape slightly larger than buns. Yet, it doesn’t matter how juicy or cooked to perfectionyour patty is just a boring burger unless you know how to jazz it up!
When grilling for a party, some guests eat anything, while others prefer low fat, no carb, vegetarian or vegan fare. The perfect solution is a burger fest! That's right - grilling up a smorgasbord of burgers, unique toppings and condiments will sex up any burger and make everyone happy.
My favorites are Kobe beef, lamb, turkey, salmon and portabella burgers. Create them yourself or purchase ready-made from your favorite grocer, then doctor them up. With the right toppings, condiments, and buns every burger can be exclusive and sensational!
Here’s how I serve them:
Sexy
Kobe Beef & smoky Cheddar Burger
– with Beer & Hoisin Caramelized onions on a Brioche Bun
InGReDIenTs FOR KOBe BeeF:
1 1/3 lbs. Kobe Beef, ground (serves 4) Season with salt and pepper
InGReDIenTs FOR OnIOns:
2 tbsp. canola oil
½ tsp. butter
4 large yellow onions, sliced
2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 tbsp. brown sugar
DIReCTIOns:
¼ cup hoisin sauce
½ cup beer
1 tbsp. tomato paste (tube)
1 tbsp. soy sauce freshly ground salt and pepper to taste
Heat oil and butter in a large sauté pan. add onions, S&p, cook 10 minutes, then stir in brown sugar.
Combine garlic, hoisin, beer, tomato paste, and soy sauce. once blended, add to onions. Continue cooking for approximately 15 minutes until liquid is reduced and glossy, stirring occasionally. Keep warm until ready to serve. Makes 2 cups
Lamb Burger
– with Feta cheese on pita bread with:
TzaTzIKI sauCe
6 oz. container greek yogurt ½ english Cucumber 1 tbsp. fresh dill (optional) salt and pepper to taste place ingredients in blender and puree. Chill until ready to serve.
Turkey Burger
– with brie or blue cheese and granny smith apples: Combine, 1 can whole cranberry sauce and 1 cup BBQ sauce – slather on top.
Portabella Veggie Burger
– marinated then grilled, portabella mushrooms (balsamic, olive oil and minced garlic), grilled red peppers, lettuce, tomatoes and chipotle mayo (2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce with 1 cup, mayo – pureed) on whole grain bun.
Grilled salmon Burger
– cucumber ribbons, lettuce, tomato, dressing: (6 oz. container greek yogurt, Sriracha and sesame oil) on nine grain bun.
seRVe: Having a carnival of condiments and toppings is crucial! in addition to bacon, lettuce, pickles, cheese, mustard and ketchup, include unique items - pickled veggies, slaw, herbs, chutneys, salsa, & hearty salad dressings. You’ll be shocked at the concoctions people whip up and love! these are my sexy burgers – what are yours?

SST. LOUIS’ TOP ENTERTAINERS Alan Ox: song & dance man
By sHeILa FRayne RHOaDes
mooth, classy and funny – describe Alan Ox. He’s a singer, instrumentalist, tap dancer and comedian all blended into one top performer. Popular in St. Louis for many years, Ox can always be counted on for great entertainment.
This charismatic crooner represents the best of the Great American Songbook. Ox delivers popular standards in mellow tones, peppered with his unique brand of humor. He’s inspired by vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ray Charles. Ox commented, “Sinatra was always it for me- his voice interwoven with lush and powerful arrangements.”
A born entertainer, “I was the 7 year old who’d perform whenever the family had company.” His talent seems inherited. “My dad was a natural singer who taught me to love singing.” By age 11, Ox was playing drums and vocalizing along with LP records that his dad brought home. “My love for comedy also started back then. I was mesmerized by TV comedians like Sid Caesar, Jonathan Winters, and Steve Allen.”
Based in St. Louis most of his life, Ox has performed in bars and bistros since his early 20s. “I’m really a drummer who plays piano. I was a ‘singing drummer’ until I was 28, then I threw my energies into getting gigs on piano. For seven years I had the thrill of studying piano with great Herb Drury.”
Ox played in the band named Maiden Voyage for five years in the 70’s. In the 80’s he partnered with other pianist/singers.
“We’d do piano bar shifts at the Palm Beach Café in the CWE.” Ox has since performed at Caleco’s, Lido Cafe, Cheshire Inn, Fedora Café and the Ritz Carlton.
Ox’s present schedule includes Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Talayna’s, Candicci’s, The Choice, and Sqwire’s. “Wednesdays
are split between the BlackFinn and the Frontenac Grill. Those gigs are with Curt Landes, under my band-name SilverFreak
We’ll be performing at the First Friday Music Fest in Bentonville AR, in June.”
A career highpoint came in May, 2012 when he was invited to sing with The Boston Pops Orchestra.
“I sang solo in five performances. The last one was broadcast live on NPR Radio. It was a thrill singing to 2400 people.”
Ox has staged several music/comedy concerts in St. Louis. “I love working with songwriter Al Hammerman. We teamed up for the 2011 Make a Wish Benefit (Guys Like Us) at the Sheldon. Later we recorded a new arrangement of “Here Comes Santa Claus” for the soundtrack of documentary film, Becoming Santa (2011). Ox has recorded a CD entitled “Something’s Gotta Give.”
Don’t think music and comedy are Ox’s only talents - He’s also tops in taps. “I loved watching TV shows where a guy could crack me up and then throw in a little song and soft shoe.” Ox took tap lessons for five years. “Tap dance is really drumming with your feet. I get a kick trying some steps when I do a show.”
“Pop, jazz, country, crooning, blues –that’s my repertoire, and my audience is just as varied. It's fun throwing out a tune that makes some guy say, ‘I never thought I’d hear that song in this place’. That’s why I’m here. To me, that's entertainment.”
Ox is available for private events, music concerts and festivals. Email:tapguy@ gmail.com. Website:thatsinger.net. uT

There’s a lot happening in town with places popping up all over. Here is just a tiny smattering.
ivy hill, the CWE go-to boutique, known especially for their jewelry and “handbags under a hundred”, has added a second location. One of the first of the new stores to open in the colonial marketplace in Ladue (on Ladue Road, just East of 170) they join splash, who moved there a year ago, and Blown Away, another blow dry bar getting in on that trend. The new Ivy Hill location has the same vibe you’re used to, but with a couple new additions. Look for some new lines, still in the young, slightly edgy vein with the addition of a unique jewelry bar. Already a hit, customers are able to personalize bracelets, necklaces and charms to their liking.
Dimvaloo Active Living, will be the exclusive seller of Lorna Jane activewear from Australia. If you’re unfamiliar with the Lorna Jane name they've been around for more than 20 years and have 137 stores, and counting—but in California —and Australia. The line of fashionable exercise clothing extends beyond workout clothes to include yoga and lifestlye wear, and even intimates and accessories. The high-tech (and trademarked) fabric comes in different levels
from compression to mesh to give you the most supportive fit and best wicking for your workout.
Other Marketplace stores and restaurants opening in the coming weeks (if they’re not open already by the time you’re reading this) are: Frill, a home furnishings boutique; cini italian c how; and The original Pancake house (mid May). We all know the quintessential, old St. Louis boutique, The Women’s exchange is, gasp, moving from their long-time home. Also relocating is the Dominic michael salon, and extra Virgin oil. Other stores include c larkson eyecare and southwest hearing (already open).
Not everything is happening in Ladue however. Leopard Boutique, “the spot to shop” (20 Allen Ave., Webster Groves, 314-961-3220 on FB at leopardboutique) has a growing, avid clientele who may not want me to share the secret of this new store but I can’t help myself. This is a great place to shop if you are young, or want to feel young without looking foolish. (Their average customer is 30 to 40.) Or if you want to get in on the latest trends, like fringe or B&W, without ending up with things you wouldn’t be caught dead in a year later this place is for you. Owner Rachel Sauter has created a decidedly not-snooty boutique, going out of her way to make you feel comfortable, with surprisingly affordable prices. Tops range from about $28 - $45, and dresses from $38 - $65. Sauter says “this is a place where young moms can get a little bit funky and try something new without feeling totally guilty about it.” She gets in new shipments every week so there’s always a reason to return.
Just bopping around town I discovered the wonderfully eclectic option B Designery (2535 Brentwood Blvd., 314-602-2712). The store fixtures are sparse but the inventory is extravagant. Think antique rosewood furniture pieces, chinoiserie, vintage clothing, modern abstract art, late 18th C. French, marble tables. On my visit, they had opened the store by request for a customer, an antique book dealer himself, so he could get a birthday present for his wife. He described the selections as “eclectic pieces that have a good chance of becoming valuable classics in the future.” That’s a pretty good endorsement if you ask me.
Ahhh, St. Louis - you just never know what you’re going to find around any given corner. What a joy! Happy Spring. uT
